no that's not it James you don't have it I think I need to remember what does a normal Stingray sound like okay the regular it's like a um like that right yeah this is more of like a Ferrari this is like I think it's I think it's more of a man no no no no no no no it's like well here actually I can do this ready [Music] wow whoa no that's not it it's it's still like a [Music] [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] [Music] James [Music] this is the new Corvette Z button six whoa [Music] if you missed the memo the C8 generation of the Corvette has experienced an engine migration it's gone from under the hood to behind the driver and in this the new Z06 the engine compartment no longer holds a classic American lump of push rods this is a different breed an exotic breed instead of supercharging the normal engine like last generation Z06 this time they've opted for an O natural free breathing one in this case starting at a hundred and six thousand U.S you can have a car with the most powerful naturally aspirated production v8 ever the car itself is also wider and stiffer than the normal Stingray and this one has the z07 package so it's cup to R Tires make it stickier and it's stream Arrow makes it down forcier and it gets ceramic brakes as standard but in any trim Chevy claims that the Z06 is the ultimate Supercar experience is that so well they invited us down to Pittsburgh to find out [Applause] we do car reviews track tests and quite a lot of messing about so subscribe hit the Bell [Music] so why all the fuss about a flat plane crank well I was speaking to one of the engineers and he explained to me that the flat plane crank not only allows the engine to spin quicker but actually more importantly it means that the intake plenum can be tuned for higher air flow rate and higher Air volume and as a result of that they have to move the camshaft from a typical push rod style to a double overhead cam all of this together means that you have an engine that revs higher and makes more power [Applause] [Music] that means 670 horsepower at at 8400 RPM and 460 pound-feet of torque not a ton of torque but this car is about chasing red lines something I'm happy to do all day long [Music] oh my what what this sound is absolutely insane this is not a Ferrari from the mid-2000s this is a brand new Corvette and that sound doesn't quite compute [Applause] some kind of kindness LFA inspired inside the intake plenum is like these little valves like throttle bodies and they allow air to pass from one side to the other as there's pressure waves happening and stuff that I don't really fully understand but they said that those valves do a bit of a dance and what that dance does is it enables not only more power and more flow it also means that it makes a crazy induction noise an induction noise is what you want in a high revving naturally aspirated engine right past seven and a half thousand right past eight that just sounds nuts God that's cool and on the outside the exhaust has this cool little flare on it as the air comes out of the pipe in the middle it expands rapidly and reflects back towards the driver so not only am I hearing induction noise I and everybody else in Pennsylvania is hearing [Music] I thought a sound like that in a new car was extinct and I will say that the power delivery is pretty much perfect it's actually got Punchy torque all the way through the Rev range just there's just so much happening all through the revs we just don't get cars like these just don't exist there's this and a couple Porsches and to be fair the Lamborghini V10 however this makes more power from eight naturally aspirated cylinders that any of the Lambos do from 10 and the transmission is just [Music] lightning first let me do fast it ships very well in Auto but the paddles are so fun and they click that [Music] feel the rear start to squirm under throttle there oh my God what an unbelievable engine [Music] but the sound while all encompassing you kind of forget about it when you do put your foot all the way down because in a straight line and around the corners the speed of this car is proper race car so there's no question that the Z06 is quick and there's attention to the response of the drivetrain that isn't present in most cars the throttle response for example is up there with the quickest of any car I can remember and the sound is genuinely intoxicating but power and sound alone don't tell the entire story and the creators of the Z06 are making some pretty big claims with this one so yeah the chief engineer of the Z06 said that the goal of the car is to have the soul of a Ferrari 458 and the clinical speed of a Porsche GT2 RS you're gonna like this nice [Music] and that speed yeah it's uh it's clinical clinical in the sense that it's abundant your absolute control of it [Music] sorry I just had to enjoy that for a minute so the soul of a Ferrari that's a big claim we drove for the f8 in the canyons and we said it danced we said it drove pretty this doesn't feel quite like the dance partner that the Ferrari does and you have to give Ferrari that they are the chassis Masters but in second place might just be GM because even though this might not be Ryan Gosling pretty it's more Hugh Jackman Hanson and I'm realizing now that I can easily have used a female example for that the steering it's not giving me Legions of feedback but it's accurate it weights up nicely it goes quite light in cover mode but still even now I can place it on the road perfectly I know what the front wheels are doing even though there's nearly no weight over them but I was worried that this car would be just an engine which is okay sometimes put it I mean it is the engine but my God can it drive well I was concerned that the Z06 would ruin one of the highlights of the C8 generation that Stingray it's not a Rolls-Royce but it is so smooth such a luxury Grand tourer and the Z06 I want it to be sportier I do but I don't want it to be backbreaking so the zero six is three times stiffer than the z51 stingray and the z07 package which this has is 20 stiffer still you could absolutely daily this package it's not overboard at all possibly helped by the carbon fiber Wheels which are lighter which potentially deal better with the bumps also helped once again if you've got the PS4 s's so basically the fact that the zero seven with cup 2rs is livable tells me that the PS4s base Z06 if you can call it a base there's more football still but even though it's so compliant and supple there is so much grip there is so much control so the chassis might not dance like a Ferrari f8 and it might not hit I can't say for sure but it might not hit GT2 RS lap times but the fact that GM has made a call that even gets close and it starts with a one before it in its price not a three not a four is a Triumph [Music] [Applause] okay so 0-60 it's a good day it's actually quite chilly which the cup two hours don't like very much it's English weather it's you're used to this is usually um so we did just drive this on the track what's the name of the track again pit race hit race which stands for Pittsburgh International Raceway first time in Pittsburgh yeah yeah it's a nice track actually great truck elevation really pretty anyway this just a few track Impressions because you know we'll do more track testing later but just based on what I found out there it's like really good right yeah very very race car issue it's incredibly fantastic yeah right curb's not a problem over them yeah right it doesn't unsettle very easily there's no understeer at all that I could see and the only issue that I had with it was like you already I think you already talked about how the steering in the the this compared to the base C8 is better because it's a bit you know it weights up a little bit more yeah some suspension changes the extra the the cup two hours right yeah yeah but I found that when I lost the rear intentionally um it didn't communicate through the steering really at all so there's still not a lot of feedback from the steering the weight's good now but there's nothing but the car is so tight on the rear end that like I could feel it in my back perfectly so I could drive it flat out right away no problem it's an unbelievable car yeah far more confidence inspiring you you think it's going to be intimidating cut two r's mid-engine yeah and it's not but and the limits were so high like there was a there was a racing driver in front of us a Corvette racing driver right yeah and like we had to really had to really push to find the limit of the car it's way up there but if you're spending the extra money yeah you want it to look different you want to know you want to go past someone with a stingray and go have you seen this thing well no I see you know so the stingray can come with carbon fiber area this is slightly different yeah but immediately it's not obvious sometimes I've been seeing stingrays around like is that a six yeah and then you have to wait oh it's not and the only way I can tell visually immediately is this so on the Z06 this Wishbone yeah is pre-brokens before you see if you can make a wish right whereas on the stingray this guy's gonna win for sure yeah well the stingray is one the stingray is just this oh on the 36 you get this as well I didn't notice that the only thing I noticed is that compared to the regular one this this panel is different that panel is different this panel is different the whole front's different the whole rear is different it's got a wing Splitters because this is the z07 yes right well that's that's the other stuff going on so this is the Z06 is 3.6 inches wider than a stingray to make way for those gigantic wide ones 345 yeah these tires need their own differential to turn around a corner yes they do fight themselves yeah but yeah the z07 stuff or z07 if I'm going to betray my countrymen uh there's the stuff like some of the stuff you can't see so underneath here there's strikes which I've realized you've realized now that it is indeed strikes yeah I'll test her off the video that's true so the goal of everything here is the least amount of drag the most amount of downforce and it's something they're really proud of because that's the goal you don't want to be slowed down the straights but the moment you hit a turn you want to be well you can you can kind of feel like I haven't to be fair I haven't driven a lot of like super high downforce cars like like really high level race cars they're all downforce related but you I swear you can feel it in the high speed corners on the track absolutely it like settles in and you're like how am I going this fast through this corner I think the only ones we have tried are the ZR1 from the C7 General yeah AC offline and easier and I could feel the downforce in those even at our track but this does also get a Big Wang okay can I say I'm sure it's styled in a wind tunnel or whatever yeah I don't like the look of this Wing I think there's too much going on yeah hardcore unless you live hardcore Thomas and that's hardcore okay all right carbon fiber Wheels very expensive I think they look great you'd pay for them well okay so here's the thing I haven't driven the car without the carbon fiber Wheels no so I don't know usually our experience with you get ultralight Wheels you see advantages in uh going over curbs and that type of thing or bumps in the road that rides a little bit better and you can kind of feel it in the steering it's on the GT4 RS yeah remember the Magnesium is it was immediately apparent in the steering right yeah but they all I don't know it's listen it's a it's a crazy looking car and this is accelerate to Yellow accelerate yellow should you have a look inside at the small changes yeah okay okay all right so what's different it's a little bit more carbon fiber okay all right so uh yeah so this one's quite optioned out but yeah you're not seeing a very different car to the stingray because of the options out stuff we have heated and cooled seats which is stuff you don't really expect on a hundred and something thousand dollar sports car no or maybe you do now we've said before this thing gets so much stuff right yes right like these seats are incredibly adjustable and quite comfortable and I'll be honest I didn't have a thought about them on the track with all the g-forces did you think one point being held in and they haven't changed so they're not more bucketed or anything from the stingray we asked them we asked him just like why didn't you guys change the seats and make like I said let's succeed and he goes like well they're pretty good weren't they well yeah yeah you're right okay but yeah so we have a carbon fiber carbon fiber steering wheel the squircle which is an option yeah so and it's a squircle but the but the calm Vibe with the new market this is a Z06 stuff as I as I think is the carbon fiber here yes so we've already had the option for carbon fiber instrument cluster on the thing but you can get this full Alcantara and I think it gets smooth lever as well just reiterate some of my Impressions from the original time we drop it I don't like still I still don't like the the square thing it doesn't bother me very much and I asked them I said why did you do it he's like well you see the instrument cluster is kind of like a rectangle I said so well why didn't you make that like a circle he said shut up and if you believe that yes um no infotainment is good this is nice I mean you're very much the priority here yeah they the the cockpit of the stingray was already a big part of what made it feel like a Supercar for sports car pricing that hasn't changed much it didn't need to change much is it just realize it says 70 years 1953 each other isn't just me years Corvette always celebrating some sort of anniversary it's always like a milestone of some kind well it's it's wishing happy birthday to all of the owners oh no not this one you see because they're aiming for a lower younger more hip demographic cool where are those people getting the money that's a great question they're just they're too busy spending it all on Avocado toast to be able to own a house by now do love avocado uh yeah you know what this is a great car uh should we do a conclusion yes okay simply put the Z06 is an unexpected treat we never thought we would see a spiritual successor to a 458 but for some reason we have and it's from Chevy compared to the last c06 thanks mostly to its mid-engine setup this can actually put its power down confidently and even though there were moments in the day where we hit scattered showers the cup to ours were surprisingly effective something we're keen to explore further when we get a Z06 on our home track it's difficult to call a car that costs six figures a bargain but as James said compared to Lambos or actual Ferraris this has a starting price with a one before it and even fully specked it doesn't break into the 200 thousands with its mid-engine setup its screaming V8 its blinding speed and its outrageous proportions this is every bit the Supercar experience now some might say that to be a Supercar it also has to be unattainable and overly expensive well thanks to chip shortages and dealer markups we figure that's probably still true so welcome everyone to the latest supercar it's magnificent thanks for watching
