magellan outdoors [Music] it is go time at lake waco real calm condition it's fall water tim's about 70. there's probably a lot of top water action i'm thinking this morning there's two kind of little rivers shallow areas and there's not really many creeks or pockets other than that hey they said everything's bigger in texas the cutway what's up with that you got to hit 14 pounds so i'm kind of thinking 14 sounds not that high until you go out there and try to do it on a new body of water sometimes that could be easy if you catch a big one or two and get some momentum this ride around man is very crucial i've got to get a good feel of this thing pretty quick we got our work cut out for us i don't know if you've happened to look around and see the company we're in today but it's not an easy field to go just catch fish and make it to the championship round but we're going to swing on them welcome to general tires major league fishing 18 anglers have escaped elimination here in waco texas today nine will face off in sudden death round one the first four to reach 14 pounds will earn their place in the championship round let's meet today's nine anglers qualifying out of elimination round one he was your winner chris lane right behind him in second randy howell and finishing in fifth place jeff sprague the winner from elimination round two ah defoe with a third place finish david dudley and the sixth place qualifier brent aylor he finished second in elimination round three dave lafibra with a fourth place showing mark daniels jr and qualifying with a sixth place finish mark rose when looking to become a major league fishing cup champion these anglers need to be ready for anything david dudley shows us how he prepared for this sudden death round in today's general tire anywhere is possible here in the big state of texas we're getting ready to fish an event i'm loading my boat up with tackle and when it comes to standard tackle you always want in your boat number one is gonna be a wacky worm there's not a state that i will never go to without a wacky worm it's a simple technique but yet very very efficient in catching bass another pole that's always going to be on my deck is a simple shaky head a stand up version of a shaky head is the choice that i use and it catches fish from two foot of water to out 30 40 50 foot of water it's a consistent catching lure and without a shadow of a doubt a swim bait we all know fish love to eat minnows shad or whatever it is they're always eating bait fish so you got to have some bait fish imitating bait on your deck at all times and with these three lures truly i feel like i can conquer the world on any lake that we go to [Music] with no practice and no information the anglers only have 30 minutes to run the lake and try to figure out a game plan to get a closer look at the options they have available let's go out to marty stone with today's late breakdown chad when anglers travel to city reservoirs they normally think they're going to be small in size lacking cover and have a low fish population lake waco is anything but that this lake consists of 8 400 surface acres of water covers over 60 miles of shoreline it's fed by two rivers the north and south boss rivers and as these anglers travel throughout this lake on their mercury-powered boats they're going to figure out quickly this is a shallow water fisherman's dream it's got great stain in the end and then the cover they're standing timber and it's heavy in the mouth of these rivers somewhat treacherous but to me the key features on the main lake is the rock formations that's chunk rock pea gravel and then the last feature that i think will come into play today is the dam itself there's a long stretch of rip rap the target weight is 14 pounds today and when we said it the anglers thought it was because we were on a poor lake and in my opinion this lake is anything but that but what we have done is we have set up for a shootout in the lone star state these anglers better be quick on the draw if they want to survive this sudden death round all right here we go 30 minute mercury ride through go see what lake waco looks like that's the deepest part so it's 48 foot gives the fish plenty of opportunity to have deep water the bait but they can ambush bait up on the rocks wow water's clean down here the water's really clean actually just looking at the depth and i'm looking at water clarity bait and then i'm seeing you know we see some birds over here set up on these uh lay downs and things like that which is which is good you know i like it i'll be honest with you i like it there's probably some good fishable water up that way but i turned around because it's standing timber everywhere i really like what i'm seeing this channel's got good hard drops it's got a lot of a lot of cover a lot of wood right on the edges and stuff but it's got good bends and deep holes in them i'm gonna look around this bridge and see if i see any bait water color is good too well i definitely wanted to come up this uh this river getting some off-colored water which we did so now i'm just looking for where the actual river channel really drops off and i think that's where those fish you'll start seeing concentration of fish we're gonna start working our way back down the lake a little bit more the other direction i wanted to see if that was runnable or not and it's not runnable a lot of standing timber dangerous all this wood looks like a perfect place for a soft plastic jerkbait water's 73 almost 74 degrees i didn't even see what it was at the ramp i would guess at least 75. to start i just feel like i need to be these harder banks instead of getting messed up in those flats can't ever go wrong with rip rap in texas in the morning if i like rip rap in the fall anytime you can find a little rip-rap rock with a little bit of water on it and some bait fish around it's always a good place to throw your little square bill at or your buzz bait or something early in the morning this is really pretty this water's got honestly what i would call a perfect color to it it looks spring-fed it's kind of got a green tint this is this is definitely the kind of thing i tend to seek out i caught some fish in the last round on a bridge a lot of bait around it when i idle around that one there was quite a bit so lines in first cast sudden death 14 pounds 14 pounds that's not a very big target weight we're gonna try to move pretty quick back in this little creek and just see if anything happens these fish from the from what i can see in the water color it looks like these fish are gonna be in about that deep of water it's a good one too come here baby get in the boat oh now that is what a black and blue jig can do for you folks four pounds 13 ounces it won't take as long with big old fish like that smokes chris lane has caught his first fish he's in first place it weighed four pounds and 13 ounces christian caught him we're begging oh he's halfway there ain't he i said they're gonna be in about that deep of water so you don't really have to work it out deep i wonder if you said pow i'm anxious to see how fast it starts i mean for the field not not me just in general there he is there he is that was two bites on that corner right there there he is that's a good one too that's a scorable get it here button here that was two bites on that corner i might be too close [Music] fishland violation two minute penalty another score tracker update for you david dudley just caught a one-pound two-ounce bass jeff sprague just caught a one-pound five-ounce bass he's in second place currently come on fish just do it right now quick look at them fish right there deck going it i'm too close you know it's a good sign to get the morning started off that way already with a fish as quick as that is so looks like we're going to just put our heads down and go quick because 14 pounds is not very much with only four spots advancing out of today's sudden death round this group of anglers will have to be quick on the draw to hit the 14 pound target weight here's marty stone for today's wily x eyewear more than meets the eye in this sudden death round these anglers have got some choices to make whether to fish rock or wood oftentimes in early fall especially with the conditions we've got today with a low of 59 high in the mid 80s in a bright sunny day there's going to be a morning bite on the rock and rip rap somewhere and it could be fast and furious just for a brief period of time and for the guys that chose to fish in the timber they can completely miss that bite but if the guys in the riprap don't get it done then you look for the guys in the timber to have the advantage because what the timber needs is the sunshine and it creates the shadows and it places those fish in specific places but unlike the rock the timbers will be a grind it'll be one fish here and one fish there if the guys in the timber get lured in and the rocks fired they're going to get behind and i don't know if they can catch up with this low target weight there's some choices to be made these anglers better make them in a hurry all right back to work look at all these trees god i mean this is just money in here i hate that i'm fishing slow already but there's so many targets to throw at you in here you can't can't fish fast at them you know i didn't even break out the rod that was one throw that much oh it broke up my line right here though i wonder if he's still on it nope it's always always tense the first 30 minutes in the sudden death around because you just don't know what to expect and feeling betty's gonna come out catching them easy or not dad don't you do it don't you do it that's a decent one see how he's hooked oh yeah i got two up in him yeah one pound one ounce first cast let's hope that works out you don't really want a big bait one pound five ounces one five you don't really want a big lake they i need to tie that plopper on so i can cover water this morning that's what i need to do i ain't gonna have to fish too terribly much more to know i need to leave one pound two ounces all right that was good all right long skinny one but he he jumped all over the top water bait so there he is uh-oh boys uh-oh that he's got it choked looking like one two maybe david dudley's caught three bass now for a total of three pounds nine ounces i'd love to have three for three nine mr biting a little bit jeez there's two deals there's either it's either gonna be something in the back of a creek where you can get up in there and a bunch of shad back there or it's gonna be something on this main lake got him oh lord got him yes lord come on what a bite that'll get you up off the couch right there boys watching that i think he won't go fishing two pounds 13 ounces 213. nice pretty old texas bass right here almost three pounder randy howes caught his second fish he's now at three pounds 15 ounces in second place dang he must have caught a big my heart's right there up in my throat [Music] so i can't tell you how many times we hear that they that people have no idea how much there was to see and do in waco we hear that all the time and it's a great opportunity for us to educate people on everything that we've got going on here but coney is distilling for one they've got over 100 awards internationally for the quality of their whiskey spirits and you can go by their tasting room on 11th street and sample or purchase your own bottle of handmade whiskey so that's pretty neat i would definitely recommend checking that out so balconies is right down the road from the heart of downtown which is austin avenue there's all kinds of shopping and restaurants there as well as the historic waco hippodrome theater that place is awesome it's basically an old spanish colonial style theater that they renovated they do concerts and dinner and drinks with a movie they've got their own restaurant on the first floor called the raleigh and they've got a tasting room on the second floor and then a rooftop bar called the high top that you can see the silos from so the magnolia silos a lot of people have heard of them because of chip and joanna gaines and their show the fixer-upper they've got home decor shopping a bakery a garden food trucks and then an area for kids and dogs to play they also expanded now they've got a coffee shop next door a church and a wiffle ball field they're fantastic at keeping things family friendly which is also the case with a lot of waco attractions like cameron park zoo that's a fantastic place for all ages it's like four minutes from downtown they've got scavenger hunts that you can do and it's right on the brazos river so really cool scenery if you're looking to get some awesome photos while you're here the waco suspension bridge that crosses the process is one of the best places for photos especially at night it's all lit up and there's a bunch of tours that go up and down there if you want to do a boat tour they all go by baylor university's mclean stadium and when baylor has a done a little bit already is get in a hurry because when you get in a hurry dang nine professional anglers are trying to keep calm on lake waco but there's no secret in the sudden death rounds the 14 pound target weight has sped them up which could be a good thing for david dudley and randy howe both anglers are chasing the shade and are trying to capitalize quickly before their opportunity runs out this late summer early fall you want to always utilize the shade as long as you can in the morning if you can keep that sun out of your water for just a little longer so these banks like this that have high banks that kind of block the sun out it's funny it's really shallow up there on the bank and it's shallow alleyways like up through here but we're in 15 feet of water i got 75 for water temp it was warm dang it makes me mad right at the daggum boat chris lane's still in first place with four pounds 13 ounces with the one fish that's crazy he's leading with 413. yes sir [Applause] you know you catch a four pounder like that real quick the only thing i can think of is the depth that i'm in i'm in three foot i don't see really any bait back in here i see a great blue heron back in here but i'm not really getting any bites i think those trees are gonna be the deal hopefully it's a jig bite and i don't have to catch them on eight pound test again man i saw him eat it dang song there he is i saw him swim up there and mouth at it the first time i thought he had it [Music] [Applause] that's a keeper scorable don't you come off one pound even that's it golly i thought it been like a pound three or four huh fish was skinny one pound two ounces all right first one 1.5 cake but three or four bites with this question is do we have time to get those three or four bites before those one and two pounders get us oh one hit right there first cast with this bold spinner plug spotted bass okay that tells me a lot one pound four ounces one four all right on the board with a little spotty yeah okay see i can't i just there's so many lay downs that i think you have to have something else i think you have to have rock that you can reach in my personal opinion caught one on a crank bait that's all i've got um you know it's not real active i've a big one real big one well he's not a giant but he's a good one four pounder anyway boiled on it when i hit the water come on come on he won't open his mouth oh he's not a four pounder it's a good one though three pounds three ounces oh not even close to four three pounder i'll take it though nice a little bit of movement on the score tracker bernader just caught his second fish weighed three pounds three ounces moving him into third place with four pounds five ounces there are some decent ones to be caught they're not all tiny it hit the water i went and the water went cool it's just a huge boil oh my god five pounder five pounder boys huge giant one huge some bait in here that's good see if we can find a bass and go along with them covered a lot more turf in 30 minutes than i thought you know 20 pound test big jig didn't get them oh god why every bit of five pounds maybe bigger am i the only one without a fish so far you and mark rose every time i get a bite it's down in a root it's like these fish are real down in there deep i don't think he's gonna weigh a pound he might let's try one pound zero ounces we'll take him look at there oh strike king swim jig keeping us in the hunt it's gonna be pretty easy to jump ahead right now you know it's not taking much weight no one's really figured anything out yet if you could just figure out one little key it would get you rolling one pound four ounces all right two bass in just a matter of 50 yards that's strong so far from what i've seen so that's exciting sprague just caught his fourth fish he's up to four pounds 10 ounces in second place still nobody as fast chris as one fish turn and burn baby i don't know how long we're gonna be that doing this but behind david fever he's already caught them all one pound 12 ounces less than an hour remains in period one and dave lafibra has put his first dent in the 14-pound target wing chris lane continues to hold the lead with his first dent which is the current berkeley big bass at four pounds and 13 ounces lake waco is full of quality bass and with the top four hovering around the four pound mark an angler could skyrocket up the score tracker with a few big bites [Music] sorry boys my plane's here i got to go back here looks good there's got to be some roaming around some of this flat wood on this flat bank this water's not near as clean but at least the bank kind of looks like where i fished in my elimination round a lot steeper chunky rock said i'd fish it to that little stick in the water if we don't catch any no good we started out out there on that rip rap and you know that we caught a couple bass had a couple short bass so all we got to do now is just keep fishing and hopefully run into the right little wad of them there he is oh gosh lee oh that was close call right there one pound two ounces one pound five ounces i'll take five never never get out of range gotta be able to jump around that boat like a spider monkey randy howe has now moved into first place he has a total of five pounds four ounces i need to catch a fish means we're only nine pounds out oh that's awesome in texas because you know in texas you could catch a nine pounder on one cast try to get a feel for what else is out here i don't know i ain't very impressed with anything yet [Applause] oh gosh i didn't think i was going to catch that little rocket another good one always hooked under the chin stay on fish my goodness i can swing him well i'm lucky i caught that one one pound eight ounces right it was worth the trip to the back it was worth the trip to the back that dude was a rocket when he hit it two pounds two ounces okay another one on the double the double rig huh okay we got to keep throwing this for a little bit you know brent ayler's now taking the lead with six pounds seven ounces jeff sprague is in second now with six pounds two ounces sprayed right back in here with us so we're in our areas got some fish striking rage menace on a strike king swim jig uh like i said it's my confidence it's a really big confidence bait for me to cover water uh and you know i've caught three bass on that thing in the last 15 20 minutes so now you kind of get to see why it's a confidence bait for me even when things are tough small guys giant guys they all eat it i think i got the right bait it's just a matter of at the right spot limbs and good rip rap like this they always hold fish it seems like i don't know what art does right now if he catches any he's right over there by that deal i was fixing to go to stay down no that one feels decent stay on there baby what is he on actually feels really good yes very good he is very good thank you lord oh gosh unbelievable and this dude might not even score one pound 10 ounces nice one very nice one on this tough day thank you lord one pound zero ounces one pound zero ounces oh my gosh that is the most i ever went through to land the bass there's all kinds of bait right here under the water just little bitty bait just hovering right under the surface i come around the corner on our way out and there's randy hall i don't know where he's sitting i haven't had a chance to you know check but one pound seven ounces one seven yep i'm gonna take down one seven not big but it's man what a good one had that feeling to come back down this bank in the fall you always remember if you catch a fish on a bank in the fall there's always more there how is there not a 12 incher in here hey randy and i ain't looking too easy is it no it's not as easy as i was hoping it'd be i know it all looks so good we got to get a bite man i had a great opportunity to knock this thing out of the park now i'm just fighting [Music] jeff sprague's down first place seven pounds four ounces he's right over halfway there we're halfway there fellas halfway there 20 seconds 15. ten nine eight seven six five four three two one lines up oh boy one pound four ounces that's hilarious you can't quit not in this game i feel like fishing around this dam has got potential i mean i caught i got several bites right there close together caught that one decent little scorable but still on the prowl a couple guys are getting getting there halfway there and stuff this ain't this thing ain't gonna go all day we're gonna have to go back regroup and i mean i don't wanna go after them one and two pounders but i think we're gonna have to now paying attention to every little bite and trying to make adjustments based upon that you know is really how this how this game is played we got our work cut out for us you know nobody's just lighting up that score tracker which is a big advantage to us uh being that we've kind of whole period was just terrible and what stunk is that nobody really caught them good you know it wasn't like it was a whack fest like i thought it was gonna be nobody has went out nobody's run away with it i think first was maybe eight or nine pounds at this point fishing has been very tough in the first period especially after the first 30 minutes so i knew if i could grind out a keeper after a keeper after keeper i could keep myself up in the top of the leaderboard i feel good about it i feel like i've got a bait that's working some if i could just keep this in my hand and just keep moving with it maybe i'll eventually run into them i feel pretty good i've just ended the period catching two good ones so i'm really just gonna run back to where i left off i feel like i'm gonna start catching them in second period i felt good about the area i knew that i haven't hadn't fished it all really well yet but at the same time jeff sprague was coming in on the other side and we were kind of jockeying first second third and so i knew the area that i was in he was in also we were all catching fish so i figured it was the right place to be wheels are spinning uh randy's catching them i've really kind of stalled out uh to to the point to where i'm starting to you know spin a little bit but i mean we're gonna grind on them and just see if we can't make this work and go out while our pros make their adjustments for period 2 let's take a look at the score tracker 14 pounds is the target weight in today's sudden death round and jeff sprague leads the charge as our mustad point position leader it's early fall here in the lone star state and today's weather conditions are making these pros work for every single bite the bottom three anglers need to start putting bass on the scales if they want to advance to the championship round let's get her done boy let's get out of here see if we can catch us seven and a half more pounds and get out of here man that'd be awesome we we have a little bit of a lead but nothing crazy we're going to go right back in there to where we ended the first period we left some really good water the boundary zone is there that's where we're going literally you can catch two or three fish and and be out of this thing in a hurry five four three all right let's go one go oh man that's what happens whenever i get beat randy howell and sprague started back there in that pocket right right at takeoff where we started this morning i didn't want to get too close to where he thought he was going so he didn't think i was trying to get where he came from and i was gonna fish this dock right here kind of kind of what i was thinking he's faster boat than i was if i'd have been able to get in here first and then turn he would have had to go somewhere else you know that's just what out fish him that's a good one big one if it's fish landing violation two minute penalty two pounds 14 ounces 2 14. nice one yeah all right boys let's go let's let randy have this we're gonna go around him go the other way make him feel good about it before he turns around and does it on me pretty little pocket right there oh cement culvert coming out of there gosh if i just caught that other one now there's there's fish here cause i had that big one earlier i had another bite right over there and just caught that one that's more action than i've had all day just right in this one little 50-yard stretch so i gotta find some more grass in the water it's one of those deals you don't know whether to just keep covering water and they'd slow down and milk it three two one you can fish no i can't i ain't got a bait liar why you got to lie to me there he is nice one there we go thank you lord one pound 10 ounces 110 yes sir 110 way to start the second period my spinner bait's still working boys one step closer give you a score tracker update randy howe just caught his fifth fish weighed one pound ten ounces that moved him to first with eight pounds five ounces you're one pound one ounce from first i don't know how there's not a bass all over this stuff thank you lord put them power poles down made the perfect cast slow roll down there's a log right there and i was rolling right down the side of that log jeff sprague has caught another fish he's moved back into first he's now eight pounds seven ounces can't say they ain't biting well i mean we just we ran out of a little bit of water and so we got around some of this rock i just picked up that thunder cricket with no skirt on it and made a couple casts in this open water and caught that one i think i need to slow down and pitch a worm around but they may not want to chase anymore the higher that sun gets the less likely they are to dart out and grab something i guess you're five pounds nine ounces from the target weight of 14 pounds five nine we need one bass one begging one old bag welcome back to general tires major league fishing [Music] it's a better one ain't it two pounds five ounces those are the ones that get you to 14 pounds quick that was a good move one pound one ounce that might be the start of something we needed right there he may be a late bloomer in today's sudden death round but mark rose has made his first mark on the score tracker and still has an opportunity to make up some ground the first four anglers to reach the 14 pound target weight will advance to the championship round and these lake waco bass are not making it easy despite the tough conditions jeff sprague has found a way to stay the course and is just over three pounds from victory for more on that here's marty stone for today's six hour success in sight lake waco's fishing tough as nails and that's often the case in late summer and early fall the key is always fish shallow and i mean super shallow what sprague's doing is going in behind the timber or deeper into the creeks and he's literally turning mud with his trolling motor and he's casting a swim jig to what little bank grass is in the lake and anywhere that he sees overhanging buck brush that shell of water is created in the shade line and there's going to be a little bit more oxygen content more times than not in late summer early fall anglers miss it by fishing too deep spray that's not the case with him he's fishing dirt shallow and that's been the difference so far in this sudden death round i think there's enough fish in this creek to go out so we're going to grind on it for a little while and just see you know how we can make it work i feel like the most of these fish in this lake are still out deep somewhere look at all these shad breaking that's a ticket to believing they're in here it's like all the shad are over in the sun i would think they would have been over here that's why i like this bank fishing that fluke rig on the shady side and flipping on the sunny side that's what i should be doing one pound five ounces 1.5 ounces thank you all right one pound five ounces i guess you just gotta keep your head down and stay in the game gosh did you see that dude are you freaking kidding me i guess they will still bite it that was weird dude sitting there holding it and i felt dude i'm like that's a fish [Music] okay one pound four ounces all four all right there we go that's the number third bite doing that so that might be a good sign might be a good sign we gotta take our penalty might be a good sign mark daniels jr he's caught back to back fish moving him up to fourth place six pounds one ounce oh doc caught two and there's one no that's a nice one that little score one pound 13 ounces 113. that's a nice nice chunky one thank you buddy playing my game these fish are holding on some of these isolated trees but you got to take your time and pick them off and so picked up the finesse rod scaled back and just kind of taken my time 30 seconds makes three they've all three come on this bait and they've all three come around shallow wood well no i gotta take that back one of them was on the dam but this has certainly been the way i've got with the most amount of bites [Music] he got him right here he hit right here at the boat i don't know if he's gonna be a pound or not [Music] trailer hook got him it's gonna be one pound even one one maybe come on one pound two pretty ounces that soft tip man you got too stiff a rod on that spinnerbait you missed that one he come out behind it and i watched him right as i looked down and grabbed that trailer hook that tree should have one on it like you wouldn't believe not that one that one or that good good good yes thank you jesus man that fish had me in stuff it come out i just knew he's gonna pull off thank you lord one pound 14 ounces almost a two pounder yes thank you lord octopose got another fish he's got six pounds five ounces he moves into fourth place putting you down into fifth i noticed both them bites they were on the main drag and not back in little pockets but could be wrong so i'm trying to keep them honest it's hard to adjust when it's this tough i mean even the guys that are catching them i mean sprague lives here come on what a big one 10 9 i just need a three and a half pounder i'm like i gotta reel that thing really slow get it down dragging the bottom almost nothing's guaranteed though it is fishing i'd like to catch a couple more real fast go out so we ain't got to get a sunburn there he is i'm begging oh my gosh lord please let him stay on let me [Applause] oh we might go out with this one boys yes sir yes sir [Laughter] how much do we need how on it's a roller coaster of emotions in sudden death round one and today's favorite fishing overview of the day shows randy howell riding high after catching a three pound two ounce fish in this shallow pocket three pounds two ounces real close boys only five ounces separate randy howe from the 14 pound target weight and a spot in the championship round jeff sprague needs a little over three pounds but there's a stacked field sneaking up behind him when quality fish start hitting the score tracker this game can change with just one cast we need three pounds i mean that's right there you know oh it's taking longer than i was hoping it would need one scorable fish almost there y'all don't give up on us we're gonna get him now we're going out first come on we got to beat the second period we can't we can't mate we got to get out of here in a second period what i got to catch is right around me right here that's a catfish i think lots of big bass golly god that's a big one keep your head down how was that four pounds nine ounces oh my goodness dave i have another sport tractor update for you i knew they were biting brent eller just caught a four pound nine ounce bass he moved to second place was 11 pounds zero ounces oh that's got to be a good feeling they're schooling on the other side of me here little ones there he is i saw that dude come out there and smash it two pounds two ounces two we're one pound one bite away now one by the way i saw that guy come out and just crush that jig it was perfect go three four pounder right there black and blue [Music] what you gonna do i mean he was in the dark dirt dirt water shallow yes david dudley's caught a fish one pound zero ounces moved him up into fourth i'm playing a dangerous game and i'm losing i wish i could just have a perfect day once in my life you know every fish counts i know it does but this one is like super tight so just catching a keeper is good randy howell still hasn't gone out no sir wow cut right now so we got to come back out here and catch some and in fairly short order i think to make anything good happen tough tough tough tough man i thought we got on a little something drop shot on the wood and kind of went away i'm not i'm not done with that though i'm gonna continue to try that um because really that's the best that's the best thing i've had going today i mean i've had four bites on it productive period now i got a decision to make do i come back up here i almost have to unless i see something i like going back i think next period we're just going to hop a bunch of points you know if i pull up on the right spot i can catch one big one or catch a couple in a row you know we've got another period to go and a lot of fishing ahead of us so even though it's one bite it's not dave lefebre it's bling possum while these two continue discussing nicknames let's take a look at the score tracker the first four anglers to reach the pound target weight will advance to the championship round and the top three anglers are all within striking distance randy howell is only five ounces away but history has shown that finding the last fish in sudden death isn't always sudden brent ayler scaled a 4-9 in period 2 giving him some big fish momentum heading into the final period for more on that let's go out to marty stone for today's yeti cooler talk fall tournaments aren't easy [Music] correct if it's early like it is right now it's hot and we're still basically summer out here water temperature is 76 degrees we're not in that full fall swing i wish we were i think the fish would be a lot better get that water temperature to cool off get those fish up shallow you can catch them cranking and we're not there yet a lot of fish are still in their summer pattern i think last time you won a cup event we were in texas follow the year yeah yeah we were uh it was fall and it was later we were in november if you remember right it was cooler and it's right where those fish you know where i want them to be where you can throw a jerk bait you can throw a crank bait they're wolf pack and chasing these fish right now they're just i still think it's too hot we've had a real bright moon and i think they're feeding a lot at night that's working against us as well it really needs to be cooler for these fish to really start snapping you're targeting the guys in front of you you want to be that first guy out or are you worried about those guys behind you uh i'm not worried about the guys in front of me they go out they go out it's fine fishing's so tough that anyone could catch them i'd like to hope that what i just found could be the right thing i had two bites really fast and if i could duplicate it then you know i might go out first brynn ayler is only a bite or two away from making another championship round tough tournament though but he's grinding out some quality bites i've learned with major league fishing you don't ever give up you can catch two right at the end and come back never give up we're gonna ease over this direction and try to fish some new water um it could go really quick or you know we could have to pick it apart and come back over here so we'll go see what happens this third period see if we can't put the hammer down right at the end i think my best bet is to go and try and fish that you know 8 to 12 foot zone somewhere in there and see if i can finish it off i know what bait i need to throw just shooting from the hip three two one go [Music] see what happens guys all right guys let's go out let's knock this deal out let me go to shallow i don't think my spot's too shallow i guess it's not too shallow there's a keeper for us that didn't take long my hand slipped off the handle and everything one pound 11 ounces 11. oh boy i love it i love it that didn't take long i think we figured out how to catch them you guys oh well one rattle it right as i come through that oh he's actually got a real belly on him maybe that'll be enough of a belly to go a whole pound 15 ounces ah look at that big old shad tail in his throat cause a dang ol spotted bass this is where i would be it's like they're suspended out in this stuff cool look at that fish drilled it if that's a bass that's a good it's a big one nice one man i thought it was like a five pounder y'all that fish is heavy don't fall yes thank you lord one pound 12 ounces fishy fishy [Applause] that fish hit it as soon as it hit the water two pounds two ounces yes nice chunker finally i have a feeling there's a concentration of them kind of in that in between depth you know they're on main lake points that are not in the full summer out in deeper water i think they're just sliding up from the real deep water that was like soon i mean two cranks or something as soon as it hits the water whoa that fish was super shallow man ah you just never know oh power poles down dave lafabra has added two fish he is in sixth place with seven pounds 12 ounces need them to come up and show themselves just come up school and it'd be great it's a really strange deal because that's the carryover from my elimination round it's like you say something boom boom randy howell still pounds seven ounces you're now in third with 12 pounds 14 ounces they're making me work for it now ain't they not that we ain't working for them on david this is a grind buddy talking about a grind man thank you lord fish just barely had it too bam man i went from thinking i had hope to i suck oh gosh i just lost one gosh dang it hooked him for just a second gosh dang it man it doesn't matter what the what kind of cover those fish are on it's really a good idea to turn around and go back through it again same bait different bait whatever but you got to go back through those same areas just keep beating on them those fish are they like those certain little areas for whatever reason stay on there that will score as well they gonna be enough you need one pound one ounce one pound two championship around all right he caught him quick we gotta run to that point where i caught that one hit these other points after i hit that one well we better get on our horse let me tell you it's a little bit bittersweet because my son his first junior tournament of the year i'm gonna miss it because because i'll be here but he understands that's part of it but dude is a dad those are things standing still if the two of them don't close it out quickly the anglers below them could hit a flurry and snatch the final two spots we made a bad mistake coming over here it sounds like looks like anyway you still need one pound two ounces they both got to be nervous got to make it happen man yeah i went from there's a little hope to i'm pretty depressed right now just goes to show though get on a little something just like i just did all right we're gonna idle back out to the front fish them trees at the very mouth of this thing here we go again here we go again get a bite it's panic time i start on this side cause i want to work around it you know fish the whole thing that last one i caught was on the side of the point got on the end of it if i only fished the end of it i wouldn't have caught it a dream of fishing trees like this actually [Applause] all right one pound eight ounces one pound 15 ounces 115. all right there we go a fish i'm gonna run probably gonna run back out here and try to go back down some of this bank again i guess i don't i really don't know what else to do right now i'm getting to that spot where you just don't know gotta get to work yo it's mega grind mode but just sticking with my guns there are some fish on this isolated wood you just gotta you gotta you gotta fight through it you know it's not all good and you gotta find you know just that one right piece that they wanna be on and that's just all there is to it just waiting for that thing to jump and go slack on me that's when the good ones bite it man let's go dudley's still at eight pounds or he catch something no he hasn't caught anything he's still at eight pounds he caught him right here somewhere i guarantee it's where he caught him well i caught those four fish in 20 minutes when we left him he was right here somewhere my only hope now is to catch them deep oh yeah [Applause] stay on there no penalties gotta keep my line tight black and blue jig who would have thought that i mean i obviously thought it i rigged one up one pound eight ounces but i wasn't gonna use it just for looks you liked the look of that thing didn't you bud dave lafibre moved into fifth place with his fifth fish that weighed one pound eight ounces he has nine pounds four ounces man it's been a tough third period except for to foe i don't know fellas i really don't know why i can't get a bite doing anything maybe i'm just again i'm not living life right there probably oh come on three more real quick i haven't had a bite in an hour and a half probably and i just had three bites on the black and blue caught two of them here we go one pound three ounces all right back where i caught that big one in that hole if i can't catch one more or two more mark with that last fish you caught you're seven pounds four ounces from the elimination line me and i am yes sir me him meow mark you got five minutes remaining in period three oh my gosh oh my gosh there is some big ones jumping chad right there oh my gosh probably one of them shad shad they've been biting at the worm real distinct small little tap catch a 5-2 right at the end you see those big boulders down there you'd think bro i mean man you would think i'm sweating pretty good so dave tell me about the end of the day it was crazy i was running i didn't even know there's nothing there but a bird chirping and all sudden all heck broke loose that's a good oh god just pulling on the tail were you oh yeah all right dave david dudley just caught a one pound five ounce to move one ounce past you with nine pounds five ounces now who's in fourth uh brent aller he's to be so nervous i don't know what else to do i sit right here i know there's more fish here catfish is so tough man insane oh my god i gotta steal it at the last second seven six five four three two one lines out end of round congratulations you're moving on to championship around oh my goodness you talk about fish your heart out i am telling you right now from start to finish we fished as hard as we could fish we never let up and we still couldn't make the target weight i caught the big one on and hit a whole bunch of other spots to look good and never caught another one so i'm blessed to make it and uh ready for the finals this is what it is good luck to the rest of the guys it was a stout group they showed up trying to think of a whole bunch of stuff i'd have done different i don't know can't wait to watch the show and see where i messed up there at the end it's been fun i've enjoyed my stay at waco great place headed to arkansas with my general tires the thunder crate came through today i caught most of my fish on a swim jig a quarter ounce strike king perch color swim jig with a rage swimmer i'm sorry a rage menace uh trailer on it uh you know and that was the majority of what we caught them on it just we just didn't get a lot of bites so let's put this bass cat on the trailer and see if we can't get over the championship round their pursuit to the 14 pound target weight jeff sprague and randy howe led the charge and steadily made their way up the score tracker it was worth the trip to the back but in period two sprague started to stall and his competitors took full advantage i think four pounder oh yeah however randy howell kept his drive alive and punched his ticket to the championship round it's done today's barbasol close shave goes to come back king of period three adifo defied what seemed like impossible odds catching over eight pounds of bass in 20 minutes to advance one step closer to the heritage cup trophy dude that is my championship ticket right there let's catch up with randy howell and see the baits he used to win the round in bass pro shops end of the line i'm randy howell and this is the bait i use to win my heritage cup sudden death round this is a little 5 8 ounce finesse type spinner bait it's a small body small frame and it's got a little turtle shell blade a turtle shell blade is kind of a mixture between a willow leaf and a colorado i like that because it has the flash like a willow leaf but it also has more vibration like a colorado so that's an in-between type blade and so it gives off a good vibration it's just the right size that you can still cast it the key to not using too small of a bait is being able to cast it accurately and get it up under trees and around the lay downs and such and then crawling it down that cover and having it slow enough that the fish are able to react to it when you bounce off those limbs and stuff so it's just a nice little compact chartreuse and white with a little bit of blue this is a standard bait that you want to always have in your tackle box anytime you go anywhere in the early fall because this bait will always catch fish when it's tough to make them buy it's over boys we're done here are the final results of sudden death round one randy howell and otifo were the only two anglers to hit the 14-pound target weight and with a top four finish jeff sprague and brad aylor will join them in the championship round the bottom five anglers will be heading home although chris lane didn't land in the top four he did land the berkeley big bass of the day with this four pound 13 ounce fish now that is what a black and blue jig can do for you folks let's send it over to marty stone who's with today's winner randy howe the world of electronics has taken over bass fishing it has been nice to watch this week an angler go old school and it seems like everything you every lake we're taking you to you're focusing on the backs of the creeks and pockets yeah that's right we're in that late summer early fall starting pattern and that's when the fishing's always tough which is proven here on this lake today it's a really hard grind and now like you said i've got my butt kicked with some of the the young boys and the electronics it was good to get back on the bank and throw that spinnerbait in that little square bill and uh and get the job done talk about a spinnerbait it's almost a forgotten lure you're right what makes it work so well in the fall of the year and i noticed you really been conscious about downsizing yeah it's really you know every now that the bladed jig has been so popular the last five years on our tours that everybody throws that not many people including myself even throw a spinnerbait much anymore but when you get in these tough situations and that dirty water and the fish are real shallow and the bait fish are real small i downsized to that little small blade little colorado small turtle turtle shell or colorado either one and just uh really bump that thing into that wood as much as possible and the key this week on both of the lakes i've been on is a real small fried it may be a shad fry possibly that's on these pieces of wood and when you bump that wood you see the fry scatter almost like in the spring and that's when you get that reaction bite every you know every once in a while not a lot but that's what's done it momentum is everything in this sport your elimination round you had the lead at one time still finished strong top three now you're the first one going out heading to championship round you've wanted every level you've ever fished except for a cup yeah what would it mean man i tell you what i've said it for the last five years now really if i could i need a cup on my trophy case so bad man that classic trophy is nice but that cup it's a big spot for that cup and i want one because this is the stiffest competition we've ever fished against in this major league cup event so i'm going to be gunning for it on friday that's for sure randy howe survived a tough sudden death round he's got momentum on his side he's heading the
