last week we made a video in which i gave you my thoughts on the new 2021 imac definitely give that video a watch as it's quite different to say the least however in this video i want to give you not 5 not 10 not 20 not even 30 but 22 things you need to know about the new imac okay and number one is that the imac is actually an amazing deal actually the best deal if you're looking for a pc in terms of performance design display and basically everything and that's because you just cannot find a pc or even build a pc that has similar specs a similar display quality and something that costs less than the imac in terms of the display for example you can get the lg ultrafine 4k display which costs 700 and that's literally the closest display to this imac panel now the imac is still better as it's slightly larger and also has a higher resolution of 4.5 k compared to 4k keep in mind that the imac costs 1300 so you have 500 left to fully build a pc that outperforms or at least matches apple's m1 processor in terms of performance keep in mind that the m1 processor beats any laptop chip from intel and almost every single desktop chip in terms of single core performance with the exception of intel's new 11 gen series now you might think that oh you can just get an m1 mac mini but you see the m1 mac mini is 700 on its own if you buy a keyboard a mouse plus of course a display well it's gonna be way more than what the imac costs so the imac is an even better deal than the mac mini is if you also plan on getting a high quality display then number two you've all seen the chin the very ugly chin on the new imac which unfortunately gives it a very outdated look in 2021 when you have monitors and especially the pro display xdr that look like this however there is a reason or actually two reasons why the chin is there the first one is that it makes the product more unique i don't think that's in a good way but yes it does make the imac stand out and then number two it houses all the internal components of the imac now of course that apple could have just moved all these components higher behind the display but this would have resulted in a thicker imac which i think apple should have still done because like how often do you look at the side of an imac like the front is basically all you see all the time so yeah i really hope that apple will finally drop that chin with the imac pro even if the imac pro will be a bit thicker i wouldn't mind that now here's a fun fact did you guys know that if apple made the bezels black and added an apple logo there we go it looks almost the same as the previous imac yeah which is slightly thinner bezels around the screen but that's it so i think this is the main reason why they wanted to give it some colors and remove the apple logo just to make it different than the current imac because if you look at it from the front with those black bezels and the apple logo it's pretty much the same speaking of bezels why do you guys think that every tv every monitor and every laptop they all have black bezels well it's because of content watching content you see a lot of the movies they have black bars so if you have black bezels the movie blends in much better with the whole device and you get this continuous this seamless image so to say white is a not a great choice for watching content because it will stand out like crazy and to be honest the same goes for the chin that color chin which would also stand out like crazy now there is likely a solution for this and it's called the brand they're actually not a sponsor by the way um but they do sell a skin for the bezel for fifty dollars and then a skin for the chin for sixty dollars and then another one for the whole body of the imac for five hundred dollars which is just nuts don't buy that but i would honestly recommend the bezel skin because it would just help making the content more immersive so i would generally recommend that now some fun facts about the thinness so this new imac is 11.5 millimeters thin did you guys know that a very first ipad was 12.7 so yes this new imac is thinner than the very first ipad now i know the first ipad had the slope design which was thinner on the edges the imac is more uniform but still it's thinner than the ipad however it is thicker than the previous imac kind of so if you look at it from certain angles the previous imac looked insanely thin as the edge was just five millimeters thin this new imac has a uniform design so it actually looks much thicker than the previous one again only when viewed at certain angles speaking of thickness or the lag thereof apparently this imac was way too thin to have the headphone jack on the back i mentioned this in the previous video the fact that apple literally had to put a headphone jack on the side because the headphone jack would have been longer than the entire thickness of the imac i do actually think that this is a better approach as it is far easier to reach that way and did you guys know that there are actually two different gpu configurations on this new imac so there's a 7 core gpu option for the entry level model and then an 8 core gpu option on the higher end but why because they both have the same m1 chip well the short answer is that the one with an 8 core gpu is just a better bin version of the m1 what this means is that the lower end version actually has faulty m1s or essentially m1s who did not perform as well as apple expected so they actually disabled a gpu core this is by the way a very common practice in the cpu and gpu industry apple did the same with the ipad pro's a12x processor which was an a12z with one gpu core disabled but honestly when it comes to real world usage you wouldn't notice any significant difference okay speaking of the gpu uh you probably know that the previous imac the previous 21.5 inch model actually had a dedicated gpu and not just any dedicated gpu it was the amd radeon 560x which was not a slow gpu at all it was pretty pretty decent so to say but it actually turns out that the m1 even though it doesn't have any dedicated graphics everything's integrated uh it turns out that it's actually twice as powerful as the radeon 560x that the previous generation imax had now that's pretty impressive but unfortunately something that you should be aware of is that the new imac does not support an egpu so if you need a ton of gpu compute power and you want to expand the internal gpu performance you're pretty much out of luck so i would say in that case maybe it's actually worth getting the previous intel model which by the way apple still sells for some reason and just attach an egpu to it but do keep in mind that final cut pro 10 for example has some very poor egp support which only works during exporting not during playback the vintage resolve does actually take really good advantage of egpus as you can even have multiple gpus connected at the same time and some other programs do too including games so what i'm saying here is that if the cpu performance isn't that important for your needs and you need a very powerful gpu and you also need a mac then maybe it's a better idea to just get the older model and attach an egpu to it keep in mind that you have to buy of course that gpu and also an egp enclosure and also a thunderbolt cable which is quite expensive so keep all of those costs in mind the reason why we don't have egp support at the moment is because of m1 limitations and speaking of those another limitation of the m1 is limited io the m1 can only support a maximum of two thunderbolt ports and this is what we have on the imac now if you get the higher end model you actually get four ports but still only two of those are thunderbolt dr2 or usb type-c on top of that this new imac also has some serious limitations when it comes to external displays for example there's no target display mode which to be honest we haven't had since the pre-2012 retina imax and in terms of the external display supported you can only have a maximum of one that can be up to 6k but just one if you plan on using this with two more monitors in order to have a triple monitor setup unfortunately you cannot do that unless you stream the video from the imac to another display which is a bit more complicated and you need a different adapter and the image quality would be lower so in terms of native support you can only have one external monitor and there are quite a few things you need to know when it comes to the keyboard itself for example you cannot actually buy this keyboard separately if you really want this new keyboard that apple just launched for the new imacs you need to buy it alongside a new imac i'm pretty sure that this will change eventually in the future but for now that is not an option now you do get touchy which is really cool finally on the imac but only if you pay extra for the touch d keyboard or if you buy the higher end model as by default the touch id key is replaced by a lock key on the lower end model there's also no backlight in the keyboard which is quite disappointing as there's a lot of third-party keyboards that do have a backlight so i don't know hopefully apple releases one with a backlight in the near future but i think it just sucks not having a backlight on the mi keyboard but something interesting is that you can actually get a special version of this keyboard that comes with a numpad and you can only buy that if you configure that with the imac when you order it also remember macsafe the magnetic connector that we had on the previous macbooks well we now have it on the imac as well which is really strange it's so weird to have it on an imac because if you snap on the cable and the disconnects your entire computer will turn off as unlike a macbook it does not have a battery the cable is also super thick and that's because it also carries ethernet and that's because the power supply is now external which is a bit strange we've never had this on an imac i believe this also means that it takes up more space and you need to store that somewhere so you keep that in mind now the thing is apple could have easily had us inside the imac too as there's plenty of space left they could have just engineered a unique one but it does have an ethernet port in it which is quite nice now the base model doesn't come with ethernet unless you upgrade that to the higher end model or you just upgrade a power adapter speaking of upgrades something that we had on the 27-inch model was upgradable ram and on this new design we do not obviously this is a replacement to the 21.5 inch imac which didn't have replaceable ram either so definitely do keep this in mind when you buy your imac because the ram that you configure is the one that you'll have forever now you should be aware that ram on the m1 processor actually works very differently compared to the previous intel models and that's because 8 gigabytes of ram on the m1 acts as 16 gigabytes of ram v4 on intel and then 16 gigabytes of ram on the m1 acts as 32 on intel and speaking of ram the more ram you have because of apple's unified memory the more gpu memory you will have and some apps will perform better that way uh for example for more benchmarks the eight gigabytes of ram m1 macbook pro exported our 14 minute 4k project in 11 minutes and 22 seconds versus 10 minutes and 59 seconds on the 16 gigabytes of ram model not a massive difference but something that you should definitely consider if you plan on using this for more advanced prolonged tasks now if you want to use your imac with a vase amount you can um you have to buy a specific vasa imac and that's because the vase amount cannot be dismounted and cannot be installed separately so you have to buy that specific version of the imac it is the same price luckily but keep in mind that you won't be able to buy a stand afterwards and convert it back and same thing with the stand if you buy an imac with a stand you're not able to install a vase amount afterwards now the front camera has been improved it is still a 1080p sensor but apple says that this is the best camera in a mac sadly there's no center stage like on the ipad pro that would have been super nice to have on the imac but there you go best camera in the mac according to apple apple also claims that his new imac features dolby atmos support which is really strange it does have six speakers with force canceling woofers but the thing is dolby atmos means a very immersive surround sound for which you need obviously surround speakers so i don't believe that this is true obviously it's pretty much impossible to do with just front-facing speakers the thing is we have had laptops before with dolby atmos even some phones so this is likely just a marketing gimmick obviously like i said you just cannot have surround sound from speakers that are just in front of you and the mics have also been improved so we now have a 3 mic array with beamforming and studio quality these are the same specs as on the 60 inch macbook pro which had some outstanding mic quality so so far it seems like this imac is the best mac for video calling okay so you're convinced that you're definitely getting this new imac however i would honestly suggest getting the higher end model instead and that's because it only costs 200 more and you get one extra gpu core you get two extra usb c ports you get gigabit ethernet and you get the magic keyboard with touch id on top of more color options such as yellow orange and purple but if you're not sure about getting this imac then i would suggest looking at the macbook pro instead and that's because it is the exact same price as the entry-level imac it has the same add-on processor the same 8 gigabytes of ram the same 256 gigabytes of storage however the macbook pro is portable it has a 20 hour battery life i know you don't get the display or the keyboard or the mouse which you have to buy separately but if you care about portability then the macbook pro is obviously a way better option and you can then buy a separate monitor keyboard mouse if you really want to turn that into a desktop but there's no way of turning the imac into a laptop so do keep that in mind let me know in the comments what do you guys think do you think this imac is worth it or do you think i don't know maybe you want to use a macbook air instead because you prefer the portability definitely give it a like if you enjoyed it to let us know it also helps you to push our videos more and definitely subscribe if you want to see more interesting tech videos like this one hopefully was don't forget about our air tags giveaway we're actually doing a pretty big giveaway of four error tags so if you want to win that the details are in the description and on the screen right here but this has been pretty much it thank
