it'll mix it up build some overhand serves with some sidearm serves but it should be a fun match both teams want to play particularly fast for the big thing for mcnerney compton mcnerney has kind of taken part in ariah parsons out of their rhythm yeah and both teams have the ability to play multiple styles you'll see both teams have the ability to easily flow between two up at the net in a regular position to eye formation to one up one back and move between those things and how they make their choices and doing those things and the choices to move forward are going to be a large determiner in the match you know it was a very very good semi-final match both teams tested along the way both teams are pretty fresh i don't think fitness in this kind of format long you know two-day tournament is going to be any issue whatsoever sun's off to the side so we just look forward perfect conditions for a great matchup orson has got fans all over the world watching including some in dubai he wanted me to give a shout out to the rsop eternals who are watching in many parts of the world rsop eternals and on the other side of the net i've got to say that i was talking to graham mcnerney before the match and he is he is sending out the first ever live stream proposal all right pennsylvania and brian compton from chicago illinois on the right mark persons from weston connecticut and juan araya from greenwich connecticut all right let's take a look at the draw right there's pat leighton our umpire introduces the teams hold on hold on we'll take a look at that draw but we have a marriage proposal here mark we can't slide right by that that is one serious thing right here on the airways so that's amazing yeah glad to be up here wait to hear from the set and see what she has to say they they moved to pittsburgh this year and graham's been playing a lot of paddle through the summer and really attributes to it attributes it to his early season the quality of early season play oh that's amazing all right so let's take a really fast look at that draw see if we can get that up there both players just marching through aria parsons here to battle with durant mitchell and good job of them coming up and making it through to the end neither team super stressed throughout compton mcnerney had a very workmanlike vision they tested hard in that second set but here we go grandma haven't lost a set there yet see a riot driving blitz with a good transition ball and ariah parsons tend to go with the return of serge they're turning well they're very tough to beat as we saw last night you see there there's just that roller return from parsons he's peeling it out i'm just talking before with mark guinness you know i think these two guys have sort of the two highest rate of almost drives without mrs compton and parsons in the backcourt just excellent for the backcourt humpton and kaler lost the semis to ariah parsons in pittsburgh 2019 nationals that was the first time parsons said he'd been on the court with compton [Music] now here's the sort of wisdom oh they're so good with their hands i mean he even popped that one up stays right in wins the exchange that's the wisdom though dump the ball slow and deep to graham mcnerdy try to get him to beat you off the ground he's been lobbing so well holding the shot pushing it deep looking for blitzes generally makes a lot of good choices but he doesn't fire that ball at you from the backcourt now the ned mcnerdy is one of the best offensive players in the game he generates a lot of spin a lot of waterfall overheads loves to hit the cut winner constantly challenging him his ability to hit the offensive volley and to read when his opponents are driving from the screen and close right in and hit drops or attacking valleys down is is exceptional yep people don't talk about it a lot but graham mcnerney and they don't categorize it that much he's one of the best block lobbers in the game he doesn't take everything off the screen he's always trying to steal a little time for you keep it out in front of him and when he does that it allows him to make these blitzes because he's pushing the ball up early and quickly that's a great comment brad it's part of what i was talking about earlier the hole is greater than some of the parts a lot of guys just let every ball go back to the screen oh tags them great ball there from orion he did not have his hands out front trying to get out of the way and score one for uriah was unsuccessful getting out of the way there's a good chance compton may return the favor later on he is excellent at spotting his opponents and attacking them with his drive great low shot off the high bouncing over usually he gets that over his opponent's heads when you don't you could be in trouble all right should be looking so we expect to see mark you think a bunch of like quick moves they'll lob and then start moving forward looking for the down up trying to cut it off spike it back at him yep i think that's exactly we're going to see a lot of with the exception of scott kaler i think mcnerney uses the waterfall over it as much as anybody yeah no i mean for sure those are the numbers one and two ryan parsons have been really confident all weekend i spoke with ariah this morning before their semi and he just really thought they were gonna win and anytime you step on the court with johan duran that's impressive yeah they came away with a victory and they don't back down from anybody this is going to be a great matchup and their combination i like the sort of the mirror image of these teams they are really sort of mirror images both teams are struggling with their serve right now right i've had to give like say an edge to one team or another you know ariah's forehand is stronger say that mcnerney's forehead off the deck that's why they're probably pretty even volley-wise compton's foreign's probably a little stronger than parsons forehand though it's a good-looking match up here now in the semi-finals there were some interesting things that happened when they were playing compton mcnerney against us konig and humphries they would have these games get up 30 love or get up 40 love even then they'd miss two returns they're gonna need to take that out of their game today you gotta be much more error-free captain mcnerney scores one good job there it was a brutal game mariah parsons i made two faults and two missed lobsters right over the wires it's a good down-up overhead but there was no sun it didn't seem to be too much trouble could be a lot of breaks to serve bolts kind of flying today yeah it's 60 degrees out here i mean it's it is warm summer paddle-esque the parsons were saying in the semis the ball was just everything was flying crazy and it also benefits both swinging a miss there from compton raquel cobbs and he still comes up with the goods that's how the ball's flying up like you said he had the time because it bounced so much off the it's a screen cut over here from varieties help me make nerdy switching in the backcourt to their customary positions [Music] because he just sets his paddle down he actually waits sometimes so the absolute last moment catches the ball three four inches off the ground and he holds it really really nicely he gives you the weight to the last second to know if he's going to lob it or push it at you talk a little bit about warm weather paddle and how it affected your serve and how you how you kind of molded your game when you were playing in it you know one way to paddle it's it's really all about making the right choices that the ball on a heavy drive can pop off your paddle even if you're a great follower with good hands when you're volleying the ball up it's easy to make it pop off so it's okay to let the ball go through because it's going to fly off the back screen a lot so you got to be smart your decisions there you also might want to close up in the net so you don't have to volley up as much volley it down because there's a little less fear of getting beat behind you also got to be very careful with your overheads there's a good softer overhead for moriah speed it up in this hot weather [Music] that's great stuff compton there you see they don't try to volley that ball just let it go through hold the net warm weather something probably drives involved in the backboard on a percentage basis as much as anybody in the country 40 yeah he'll go five six drives usually it's one two drives for players and then that's kind of it and he'll drive anywhere mark four or five feet beyond the baseline off his backfield first belittle those commercials brad you know professional drivers low circuit don't try this at home yeah exactly don't try this at home and he really does have an exceptional kind of uncanny ability to know when to roll it up higher with you know with this four under backhand and heavy spin and then he flattens it out hard right at you so he stays consistent even while hitting shots from difficult positions that most people shouldn't try that's just a killer right there awesome 40 30 yeah i wouldn't be surprised to see these two teams on sunday at nationals maybe not in the finals maybe the semis very open year and these are two terrific teams we didn't get to see any of mcnerney really last year there's the hot weather ball just popping off of mcnerty's battle but a good strike from paris this team captain mcnerney won charities of the defending champs was basically an illinois only tournament last year right due to kovid and then he had knee surgery so he was really out for most of the season advantage he struggled with the knee all year i think he says it's like 85 90 now me you again that's a smart tail from carson's and they're mcgurdage has a great sense of the court same blitzing yeah you got to be very careful we were talking about this in the semi-final mcnardy camps out right on the net when you hit those screen drives and you can't see where he is oftentimes he's right in front of you stuffing the volley back at you gotta be judicious with that shot that's exactly what he did to parsons there brian's really getting some good action on that sidewire cut he's really generating a lot of spin this year oh there we go arias staying on the net and these are the decisions that are kind of determine this both aria and mcnerney would be extremely brazen with their position standing in when others would not and their success rate's going to be a big part of the match yeah those two points were indicative of it right mcnerdy stuff's parsons orion stuff's mcnerty back yes oh just had the opportunity could execute score is deuce good early play brad yes great stuff it's a lot about it's almost exactly what we expected mark third game point for ryan parsons oh great action wow oh what a volley from parsons incredible stuff transition back and forth the fluidity in the way these players know how to trust their partner where they're going get that flurry of action then it settles back down into building the point from the back where he's gonna get that [Music] i mean that was incredible exchange up there and it's like you said there's going to be faints attacks blitzes and right now it's really high level stuff i mean captain mcnerty didn't play a bad game there at all they just got outplayed that's those decisions as you mentioned earlier those decisions will determine who wins and loses this match yeah and like you said parsons and ryan are feeling really confident and they do ride waves you know certainly aria does parsons kind of oftentimes may be along for the ride you know but they look really good out there ryan's playing much more patiently this year yeah that's what i was going to bring up a little bit later on i feel like in the past i would have said that compton mcnerney have the opportunity to back down the level of the speed of the points and maybe move into a different style whereas doesn't always feel comfortable doing that but i feel like he's willing to absolutely in the semis they played very slowly at times against durant mitchell it didn't really play that well in that match just kind of hung in there yeah i heard there were some misses here and there i was watching the other semi-final um but i heard it was gritty yep that's a good description for the match yup carson's backhand overhead is such an asset at the net almost like a left-hander yeah i think you're absolutely right you know expand on that further it also allows them to do some things almost better than other teams because when ariah goes into one up or an eye formation and stands right in the middle of the net tries to take every volley his ability to hit forehand backhand on the overhead means that he can sort of stand in the middle hit it off either side he doesn't have to run side to side to get the balls if a ride can't get him that was an awesome drop polly right there bradford incredible he's right on the net he actually unfortunately shielded us from seeing how awesome it was with his body brad continue that thought about parsons ability to hit that backhand overhead because i think that's a critical one yeah it just allows him when he stands behind a ride you'll see them run into these formations where it arrives right on top of the net in the middle of the court and parsley goes right behind him and when he does this he can hit the ball and now he's falling into a different position but he can hit the ball on both sides of the court by taking one or two steps he doesn't have to move five six steps to get an overhead he can hit one with his backhand or his forehand and they're both equally effective it's not specifically offensive but he can't hit the nick a lot but it just keeps them exactly where they want to be every time never out of position most like playing with a lefty and a righty at the same time absolutely no you're you're right gives you the the combination and sort of makes that engine go over there back down this is that drive all right parsons really sharp early i know it's their rhythm ah good spot there that let's serve mariah in the ad court is something he found the last couple years that hard serve down the t which isn't coming too far out it's got enough spin on it it's kind of sticking on the wires and not drivable on the back side ball yeah it's coming all the way to the outside but it's it's not high when it gets there compton hasn't heated up yet parsons they lead the first set three one pretty deep service bounce right in front of parsons not expecting it huh out by five i wouldn't expect to survive by five feet yo this seamless plate mariah parsons right now the way they're filling in with each other stretch there from parsons would you like to see from compton mcnerney right now bradford you know it's kind of strange i just feel like they're a little flat at this point sure i was kind of thinking that myself they're just trying to get into it and they're playing so well you know ryan parsons they're gonna have to just sort of keep close give no free points i think they need to slow things down that's kind of what i have to take well that's his shot but just didn't make it like the swing high backhand he's making too many errors right now game ariah parsons they lead the first set for one all right mark well now is one of the times to talk about one of our great sponsors viking viking one ball to rule them all one ball's consistently chosen for the sport's highest level tournaments league plays social events and weekend outings viking for the last 25 years we've remained the overwhelming choice viking unleashed the warrior in you the official ball of the apta the official ball of national championships and presidents cup and the official ball of the grand prix series viking got the new viking axe paddle coming out as well bold unique innovative colors parsons just trusting ariah that he's gonna be behind him they are trying to slow it down there's a little that replay of the point before okay here we go parsons serving 4-1 first set i like this from compton mcnerney now talking a little bit about what they're doing trying to come up with the strategy yeah they may want to grind a little right now and take the exact ball to hit that's a great lesson for players at every level but it's not going well trust those wires behind you give yourself a chance play some long points get some rhythm and that that was a terrific call to drive right there great love for mcnerney had a right on the surface line yeah anytime you got your opponent back there you got a good chance getting his feet his odds are markedly increased of missing the volley from further away i don't know just on the line great get from parsons oh unbelievable drive for parsons that ball was so low great hands from compton on the led cord tries to one time the next ball just like he did on the first point couldn't quite come up with it tougher ball that's for sure yeah that's who we're talking about bradford that's a 50 50 ball right when things are going well that's okay to swing at that one but when you're down 4-1 i think that's a mistake help me yep [Applause] yep me me you mcnerney they're looking for the waterfall over at the parsons yeah but mcnerney's he's always been a non-factor so far like it doesn't seem like they're playing on that much he's not getting any blitzes oh takes the pace off compton does an excellent job of changing his drives from ripping it at you to spinning it that time he just literally pushed it and ariah and he was expecting the hard ones way ahead of it uriah just hanging in there for the last second at the net yeah he could have tried to kill it on that was a tough ball lower than the net that's what they needed right there just sort of a couple of loose points there for mariah parsons yeah that's the other reason to be patient is your your opponent's level will drop from time to time and you're sort the other riot parsons give your opponents a chance to miss for sure i know my opponents do that way too often give you a chance to miss or yeah you don't even need much of a chance though they give you you take the first one just to make it easy there you go you're a sporting man try to avoid the christmas rush you're right keep up the momentum here help me interesting how many balls they're playing at compton well that's what i was going to say they're only just hitting occasional dumpers they know that's the spot to go to mcnerney like right there that is the spot to go at mcnerney anytime they want they can go there but whenever they feel like they're attacking then they're going to take that opportunity to i thought call stan start call stance all right so a question collins let's replay the point i i to me on the live stream he looked in it was called out the umpire stood with the call which was an out call ariah had decided he wants to play the point over and it's the first point here with this other confusion with compton service so it's it's love love in this game and they're replaying the play brad i don't know that arya based on the rules has the ability to do that but i mean the empire called it a player's prerogative very supporting i think if somebody's going to give you a point you say i want to play it over how do you stop him you know that's a really good question for an empire i i don't really know to me it sounds like a reasonable thing if he he chose to uh well as rasheed wallace once said ball don't lie well he's not going against his call so that's not what he's doing he's just given them an option to play it over the sporting leg there's a typical compton backhand he had so many of them just ripping it through the middle back head there from parsons that's a good push overhead little mini roller [Music] we've talked about this on prior broadcast brad but it just seems to me that the guys who spin the ball the most play the spin really well and you see it mariah on mcnerney's ball okay i'm gonna go here that's an accurate drive from mariah help that mackery has a very good screen drive if the ball's above the net see him hit two of them there rotates the shoulders such a simple looking shot essentially just using his height shoving it down [Music] right when he's attacking has no fear of the compton back and he thinks he's got the better of it with the spin he's putting on the overhead so far he has yo yo often started to make some better choices the last few minutes yep oh speaking of choices 30 15. although that's sort of in a riot you know wheelhouse he's trying to be surprising unpredictable he hits that comes in behind it frequently can catch a player off guard when he does it but it is some high risk over the high part of the net and as you point out that's his game high risk high reward and just you'll live with it because they're going to be some brilliance and there's going to be some moments of not so brilliant that's just a great volley i got i think parsons was looking for a riot to get to get there wait for 3-4 nobody nobody kind of flip drives mariah parsons right now yep he's but he's looking for that they're not giving him anything else to hit on a downward plane so all you can do is hit rollers and they're going for a a whole bunch of them looking for a weak volley they could possibly blitz on or one that hangs up good patient point for aria parsons there's the look it's a great look he just hits it wide mcnerney yeah he read the waterfall perfectly and just missed it but there you go so now you got you know compton and mcnerney basically giving aria parsons a some chances to miss and they get a few errors and now they're sort of right back in this match it was 4-1 just you know 10 minutes ago with orion parsons really kind of firing on all cylinders yep they played a poor game at 4-1 made a couple of mistakes and compton mcnerney right back in it i think that's one of the essential elements of the game is that the momentum is going to change you just kind of hang in there long enough keep competing keep putting enough balls and play but good things are going to happen okay a ride to serve four three first set all right new ball guys he's going right at it to me this ultimately is going to be the matchup determines who wins the match the ariah overhead and the compton backhand so far we've seen uh you know but compton's doing the right thing he's actually just putting his back in in his pocket a little bit right now and not taking anything unless it's a real easy ball for him and i think he was over playing some shots early mark to me that's been the big transition in their game a little more patient back there but that's that's the shot that's the match up i'm looking to see what happens so ryan is generating so much spin on that ball to really hurting him that's the third or fourth one he's hit over there give me cut for a winner yeah that's great you gotta hit behind these transition players it's a little out of sorts a little out of position goes for it anyway that's a long way to run to hit a ball that was a tough one tried to reach over i think almost hit like a flick angle and uh point goes to mcnerney compton what a slippery drive that was beautiful mariah's got such an amazing ability to kind of read where his opponents are when they're coming forward with his back to them with the red the best transition players in the game yeah it was a pretty impressive shot there i'm not even sure if he read it or he just made up his mind sort of almost envisioning how the player is coming in you know and he picks a spot and he picks it perfectly yes there we go great play underrated parsons he's underrated as a volleyer he's a very good volleyer he can handle himself in the exchange he's just not an offensive closing put away volume but he's a great position volleyer back to your last comment about ariah kind of reading the court i was reading a story recently about larry bird and bill fitch used to call him kodak because he would take a picture of the court he would understand where everybody was where they were going right before anybody else quite saw it i know mariah does that a lot where he just kind of sees the court and understands people's movement and positioning sure yeah no it's a it's a level of genius i mean they talk about that with wayne gretzky you know he never he just went to where the puck was going to be he didn't skate around right you know and he put the puck in a place for people to get you know and that's a just a level of vision that is unique that's a great volley for conquering but not one you want to hit in a regular basis no good job from compton seeing the arri drive there yeah both compton mcgrady both kind of jumped on the net just doing the right shot trying to hit a block log just misses it off the edge bye bowl that's a good play for compton that's going to discourage that over at mariah a little yeah bit been hitting it really well in there though there have not been any balls that i see that have been easy to cut off he got one there but it wasn't even his best strike he right it's going after him the thing is if you don't make orion uncomfortable on that side wire he's just going to tear you up yeah and he's hitting it with heavy pace time and time again like boom boom fast rhythm and compton's not quite getting his feet underneath him from ball to ball scores actually i think the other way i think it's 50 30. i think it's 30 15. 30 15. right i missed the overhead the first point is flirting a second that's coming back you got it a great playoff great read for mccarty there we go it's a classic mclarney reed he does such a great job hangs forward he knows the down-up's coming and that is a classic mistake that i think most people do they try to bounce it over the player when he's in a little bit instead of just pushing it through the player that's a great serve and a great hold parsons lead the first set 5'4 we'll have to get official word on our proposal to see what's happened well i'll i'll say yes i could be a stan i would be thrilled by that yeah i don't know if he'll be thrilled by that i'm thinking not so much less thrilled i mean i have a perfect spot for wedding i have a lot of plans okay parsons to serve for the first set five four that's been a good set nice little mini adjustment you parsons arrived went on a steamroll run and i think compton mcnerney maybe came out a little fast he hit a couple of shots that weren't high enough percentage and then they dialed it back a little giving themselves a chance to be in this but now they gotta take the break here get it to five all oh carson just struggled with that serve a little bit today you can serve a clean game here that's where mcnerney's got to be careful because that's not his game i mean he could take the high ball and make it for sure but what's a little long ball was good ball was good love i'll be 30 love now big overrule there from umpire pat layton decisive overrule yep and that's a good thing empire needs to be that it's almost more important than the call though be decisive yes decidedly so mark the ryan sneaks up the side wire takes us to triple set point this is a fast game bradford yeah i mean great great game raya parsons played really well compton ernie sort of just got down in that little micro spot in the set where they you know lost three games in a row then they sort of ride the ship a little bit but that was a quick game there the overall the call is an unfortunate thing it happens they were the benefit of that in their tiebreaker in the second set and against humphreys and assists koenig you know in the tiebreaker losses koenig called one all right we're going to take a quick break and we'll be right back in just a moment after these messages right here on the apta youtube channel presented by enet live well done great job hey what's up you patty good morning yeah a lot of fun [Applause] [Music] you guys look great out there how long you been playing who me oh i've been playing my whole life how about you wow i only started playing when i retired someone say retired [Music] [Music] looking good out there eli thank you okay welcome back to the ap pa tour about to go into the second set the finals match between mariah parsons compton mcnerney brad thoughts on the first set you know it was well played set i think captain mcnerney just came out a little fast i have not yet seen like a single maybe one mcnerney blitz and it's definitely a part of the offense that they have but right now ariah's carving up love 15. no compton in the backhand corner and you were talking about that as a key to the victory and right now the matchup's clearly going on ryan parsons way because i you know it's been almost like he's been basically a bit of a ghost right we haven't seen him blitz or take many balls he's not missing a lot he's also not playing a lot of balls he's not setting stuff up with the lob and fire parsons are just playing solid racing constant switching to the sidearm sir oh that's a great shot and well-spotted drive and of the balls like that that's a ball he makes a lot not the easiest ball though is a great shot from parsons hold here for something yeah what are your thoughts on the first set mark yeah i just think compton mcnerney played a little fast when things were going going the other way they didn't quite buckle in early enough and then the the 5-4 game was really surprising to me because they really started to play better right yeah they just make it more game earned that game it was a missed drive well then the unfortunate call they overruled and it's left 30 and then they didn't play those points long at all you want to make parsons and win those next two points they didn't do that great blitz great response from company oh nicely done that's a great overhead spin action there from mcnerney here mcnerney's cut overhead beats parsons yeah mcinerney's got a good cut overhead but he's taken out very little from what i've seen in the entire tournament mostly going with uh waterfalls and pushes or as you've seen arya hit like hundreds of cutters so far today ah see compton if you can find him he's off the net 30 40. he volleys well but it's too good to drive brian looks very confident to me right now brad kind of moving around in his element yeah he really is we've talked about it he's a great front runner mark misses that board takes us to deuce see i think what compton's doing is going to be a little bit more of the wave of the future people with two serves the sidearm and maybe even three actually sidearm the underhand and the overall me because i think variety and the ability to just give people different looks is so important tyler frazier did last night i think he had four different serves one game [Music] i could see him back out on the court a bit he's fun to watch brad he's great to watch i think he played well with just a little too many errors here and there vantage parsons well again that's mcnerney's game it was a mistake that's what he does misses that one there is an element that you can say oh take it there's an element you could say that orion parcels put a little bit of extra pressure to make that a better shot you know and it's possible why he missed it to me it just looked like he missed it but you feel that ariah could be right on top of that at any moment or he could take that off pace drive and actually cut it for a winner hitting the oof hitting the off base drives it can be advantage a little nerve wrack against players with finishing cut shots although we haven't seen that shot from mariah this weekend at all no yes he's fired up mariah parsons parsons wins the battle of the backhands to go up one love second set the compton just seems a little out of sorts to me brad you know he's getting carved up pretty good on the screens they might want to even consider switching in the backboard a little bit you know take the ball out of ariah's hand well i mean they'll still go after mcnerney but i think compton's got to either move up and cut off some of those balls that are getting into the screenshots so spin is definitely working on him it's interesting to me brad in the finals of 2019 nationals aria parsons played mark powers a lot and i think he was a little uncomfortable that when you're normally used to being the best player on the court all of a sudden they're playing you constantly that's a little awkward and i think you're seeing that here today where people normally avoid compton as much as possible and aria parsons are going after them yeah i mean it's mostly just a ride with cutting it in there there's no question and then they know they have the safe spot if there's some trouble they can push in soft and deep to the back end of mcnerney and there's a i guess you'd have to say that's a failed blitz for mcnerney just a riot reading that and he serves and volleys and when he's done with that server while he's on the net it's impressive stuff sometimes he's sometimes on your side of the net yeah he almost was he hit the net once already today that's a ball we could have seen in a riot cut one but this time no overrule their point confirmed again decisively by chair empire pat leighton is doing a wonderful job it seems like he's playing he's playing so well he's incredulous that i could have possibly been out how could i have missed that how could that i can't believe such a thing you know when i play i just wait for my opponents to call them in because oh that's just a good strike there from compton 15 30. and there you saw them create some movement of for uriah back and forth and that resulted the missed volley yeah it's been very hard i think for compton and mcnerney to control their laws [Applause] so it's been hard for them to play good solid defense and get a look back there good spots there from compton getting a few drive errors they finally get a break point here big moment of the match right here i really think this is a very important game for mcnerney oh a little break there off the top of the net watch it right hands from around mariah i mean market you're not out here in chicago where i am it is bright out there like you go outside with the sunglasses you got to have a hat on or something you cannot look over into that side sun it really won't affect play here it's really off to the side here come the overheads for mariah this is the battle that he's just been winning he's coming right after him and he comes right back at him and he's giving him no rest you know right just waits the last minute to bail yeah i don't think he was even bailing he was just looking for that one ball and he knew parsons would cover him if he had to let it go he was actually hoping that compton would hit it down and adam so he could try to spike it out i think compton is continuing to to make some i don't want to say bad decisions but they're 50 50 balls he's driving and he's missing too many of them he's definitely missing too many there's no question yeah yeah easy transition ball nobody at the net 1 30. lamenting just pushing it long nothing to fear but i asked i actually think mark that backcourt teams should do a better job of almost like you know how you call out whether somebody's blitzing from the backcourt when you're at the net you should almost call out if anybody's coming in when you're hitting a transition ball nobody there yep and you just push it over you don't have to worry about hitting a good shot great comment bradford that's such a classic blitz mariah great answer from mcnerney yeah great but again they're getting compton off the net oh he bounced it out how about that this is a great point there for every nerdy and they scrambled well there because uriah dealt well they did some really good gets there i think ariah flagged one ball that was going wide when he's coming forward i was thinking the same thing it's hard to tell if that pace was dropping it or not but i would have let it bounce because what do you lose security getting right on top of the bedroom oh good little slippery volley just sort of pushes it over to compton but again compton being off the net hurts him returned from parsons will not be happy with that miss uh he definitely expressed himself there they are maybe the noisiest team orion forces well let's just say arise you know there was a parson's groan but usually it's the other way around sometimes parsons groans in a riot shots there you go actually when we were calling the other semi-final you could frequently hear the gunshots from over there from the trap range and the skeet range here at the glenview club as well as arias laments and vamos shouts i think those gunshots were actually the red forehead that could be two there we go spin wow oh beautiful see uriah thought that he was going to be able to hit an offensive shot parsons that he just barely didn't know where that spin was going to go both got caught up ariah parsons won the first that's a big couple of games for compton mcnerney they come back and win this match they're going to look at that as a critical element so well done they played some really good points there they got fortune to break a riot actually they played that great point where they just scrambled you know a lot of grit orion really did hit some great shots in that game defended it all and then he bounced it over the court a little too overzealous really fun match yeah it's a great match and it's going to be a great you know 2021-22 apta tour marks 16 tournaments including four grand prix and nationals 10 of which will be live streamed right now charities is our fifth tournament of the tour but it's the first grand prix and all these players are competing for the apta cup at the end of the season which is forty thousand prize money awarded to the top four players on the men's and women's game so lots on the line for each of these maybe they're getting out a little mini roll here there's two four parsons to go to get that one yeah rice you know you you take the good with the bad sometimes he stood in there and then he let that one go miss red parcel's ability to get there you go rudder great read by mcnerney ryan puts it on the top of the net things are now going fast the other way hoofah all right compton mcnerney new ball brian coming up hold on gabe come to mcnerney they lead the second set 3-1 yeah definitely things swinging the other way right now brian compton makes his home here in the chicago area a lot of local fans graham mcnerney spent years here before moving to pittsburgh native of atlanta i think certainly lived there for a bunch of years yes now ryan parsons the ones that have to respond right now he touched it great sportsmanship all around today as you'd expect 15. faults from compton not what you want obviously when you're trying to get back in a match yeah they're back in it they're they're in the driver's seat right now but we all know one game one couple little blurts here and there sir ryan parsons a little bit of a blurt to give the momentum up great touch on that volley back to work here on compton he's definitely been really mixing up those overheads beautifully [Music] there's the spot that they can go to when they need to there you see you know you're doing a little nerdy shuffle looking for the blitz but he hasn't really found one and i think part of it is also the respect for arias and parsons neck game he he's waiting for the exact ball to make a blitz on he would have made ten blitzes by now often the blitz and the mcnerney blitz and him lurking around and standing in was a huge part of some of their offense he probably had 10 12 blitz winners in the last in the semi-final how many blitz winners you think uh he has today mcnerney and there's a blitz but not a winner winner for parsons yeah i don't think i don't think he has any i i can't really think he's had some good defenses of blitzes from the other side but actual blitz is from him almost not and i would describe baby's the best blitzer in the game i mean he's one of them for sure but it's a missing element right now in their game and i think it's a little bit of a testament to ariah parsons that was just a really forced swing right there by compton that's a ball he's got to put back and play whenever you're running four five six steps to hit a ball it's a mistake you know and we've talked about this a little before mark he does hit a lot of balls for more unconventional positions like off his heels on the run and he has a high success rate but you do sometimes have to take it back a notch when things aren't exactly firing on all cylinders and when you're playing a team that tightens up the net as well as they do yeah now did you feel that the compton mcnerney's changed the play and started playing better or ryan parsons kind of gave away a couple games there to change the momentum i think it was a little both uh i definitely think of ryan parsons i mean they the one game they threw and it was like fault and miss ball so there's a little combination i mean you know since they've weathered that storm they've done okay but there are missing elements right now for compton mcnerty there's no there's no blitzes there's not a lot of force the compton backhand which is usually just crushing it you know they're able to attack it well so they're just kind of fighting for their games they've done a good job getting up in this set and they just need to keep it going so compton still not quite playing like compton to me yeah i think he's being challenged really well though you know he's he's more defending he is not on the attack and there's the typical compton type of ball on the attack and he's defended so much he's actually it almost feels like he's out of sorts going for it there's no rhythm that was the type of ball you expect him to swing up it was kind of a late decision right i think that's the spin that arya's been using plus the way the match has been going so far but they're up in this set right now so good job just got to keep going but let's talk a little about the transition you see the the players kind of baiting the reports to hit the ball down the middle because they know that the ball is going to come hard off the wire it's gonna be easy ball to transition on no absolutely i mean that's the key can't give your opponents the angles to hit if you hit those transition balls oftentimes crosscourt's a good play a little longer court but when that ball comes hard to the center you may not be able to get it because your opponent is going to drive it right back at you and that's one of the reasons you see so much movement from the net player his partner serving because the ball the ball goes past him down the line it's coming straight up the back wire it's very drivable yeah transition is a huge part of the game now it used to be kind of you could almost break the game up into parts you know net play where you're doing your volleys and overheads and a lot of positioning and teamwork backcourt play where you're doing your drives and your lobs and uh learning how to set up your offense for the backcourt and serve return of servant first volley how you approach that aspect of the game but in today's game if you want to get anywhere near the high level transition is absolutely a whole nother part of the game that you have to master something's got to be hitting 80 85 percent of the balls in the back they're going all after him and he's you know struggling getting his offense he's just surviving yeah see look at that i mean we watched this perfect angle to see him just fighting it off great recovery of those last two balls see in the lobs compton is hitting they're just like on his heels he's just flipping them up there's not a lot of i'm controlling this down the line high and moving myself into an offensive position i wouldn't mind seeing him somehow get up the wire a little bit but this is survival mode yeah no that's all they're doing but this might be the right thing to do just survive make it a hundred ball point give pariah an opportunity to miss a ball or parsons or make a mistake maybe they'll over hit and overhead give you the easier one right now he's just coming one after another but i like this for them because there isn't i mean do you see any good balls for for compton to be hitting it was one short ball the company could have swung out that he kind of guided but that was it i mean there's survival mode but exceptional john from a right party just ball ball and the cadence there it's one two three you know just constantly keeping him in motion moving and digging it out next ball and then you do that 50 times yeah and it appears to compton that is the sunny corner yeah sorry that one in the sun clearly would they want to move graham over see if he can cut off some balls or grams of exceptional block lobber take some of those balls off the deck block them before they get into the screen and see if he can block him down the line to change the attack something continues to struggle it's something they could consider that's just great play right now like that ball from compton there you didn't really swing at that back in with any real commitment that he just rolled it it's me that's his shot and that ball was high enough he could have really swung at him oh gets that one nice job hitter's got a hit so he takes one there good play big moment of the match right here that's still game point for ariah parsons missed it wide yeah i think they just done a really good job of taking him out of his game so to me mark it looks like there's no flow or rhythm to the shots that compton and mcnerney can play they're more just surviving there's a great job by ariah parsons there is it no flow for compton mcnerney is it no flow for compton it's no flow for content i think to me almost been invisible you know i they're really not going after him much i don't know what he could be doing to get involved um i mean so how do you look at it mark well i think it's just such a different way of everybody playing it's what the interesting aspect of it is i mean i'm sure the whole tournament people have been avoiding the compton backhand playing mcnerney as much as possible doesn't hurt them from the backboard and now all of a sudden they get to the final and the other team has completely turned it on its head and they're hitting eighty percent of the balls to mcnerney compton and strangely you know as much as it's the wisdom to kind of hit the ball in the canary because he's not gonna hurt you they're not just hitting the ball of content they're attacking compton yeah again it's not it's not like they're hitting the ball to compton they are attacking compton you know and he's he's struggling right now he's getting carved up with the spins they're doing an awesome job as i mentioned earlier it's just awkward when you're the offensive player in a team and people are start attacking you you're not used to it yeah comfortable no and at least i'm told it might be uncomfortable personally but the other thing that they do because you're right about that people will come after mckenna mcnardy kind of gets in a good rhythm with his lobs he starts bunting it here bunting it there he lobs it around then you'll find compton moving over to get comfortable offense that he's moving into they're just going after him and he's having to move side to side back and forth do you there's the blitz great play for mcnerney and a great play for mariah and they go after him but he's there that's everywhere that is good look at that ernie is that two top spin four hands at a point great point from mcnerney look brad that goes to your point maybe they should be switching in the backboard it's just some brilliant seen some brilliant backcourt play for mcdonald in the ad court another big point here see i think one of the moves that compton just doesn't do much because he always looks for his backhand he'll stay out wide i think it might be good for his for to have it play up the wire and he doesn't play up the wire he starts here and moves up the wire with his backhand which a lot of guys nice job mcnerney rick nerdy beats parsons back to deuce good job if they can get this in there i mean they're still right there they had that they had their good run to get up 3-1 and they're fighting now this is great getting that back to deuce yep that's a great position that's what i'm talking about up the wire but he's still reaching and stabbing that's parsons pure acceleration from forward out that's a great lesson for everybody who thinks you need this big backswing to generate pace you do not let's see that let's see that ball again yeah i'd love to see a replay of that here's this great exchange here oh here's the spin where compton beats him behind arson is ready with the forehand and then it jumps three feet to his other side there's a good stretch forehand from mcnerney huge ball there but right now aria parsons they were down 3-1 they had that moment where their play dropped they you know they gave a couple of points away a few donations camped them already capitalized to go up 3-1 but since then it's not like compton and mcnerney aren't fighting they are they're trying to survive but they just are getting worn down you know orion parsons put him in a you know especially a riot with the spin overheads he's putting compton in the washing machine and he's on spin cycle do you see any strategy from compton mcnerney i mean there's a clear strategy for mariah parsons i'm not sure i understand what compton mcnerney are trying to do uh i honestly believe they're just trying to survive mark i don't see any control of any of the actions so without any control of the you know play they they don't have a strategy you know they should be loving higher and deeper but they can't control enough and compton's labs have got to get better and then i think he needs to move up the side wire or they need to switch a little the only thing they can hope for is you know in terms of the play right now that's perfect for them you know survive get an orion missed forehand capitalize right hang in there but they're not controlling the points yet you can see these points from mcnerney's lobbing araya parsons much worse position when they're pounding the ball into the compton corner yeah it's sort of neutral this is neutral but as soon as the ryze starts pounding into the corner they go on offense with net i love that rip from compton but mcnerney's really causing a little bit of discomfort now he loves him really well best lover of the game brad uh he loves really well it's i would say he's up there for sure you know what else is terrific is johan durant holds the ball so long he does when you have his forehand pushes on the ball and then he pushes it to a place and he moves to a spot where he's looking for bond yeah he's very good that's my understatement of the day yeah he's very good he's very good guys okay he's a smooth player that durant yo big moment of the match and both teams realized here you can see compton mcnerney's lobbing parsons as much as possible that's a lot of overheads to hit from the two side that's perfect though as long as he doesn't have the angle to start carving up compton that's huge this is a good point for them because there's no angle once it starts this is where now compton's had the he's got to be able to live that ball down the line enough and there they get the air great job 30-15 yep perfect description bradford you really feel like a riot person if you have a hold of things right now if they can play it they really do the next couple games they're going to win this match yeah they just have a control of all facets of the game if they don't i don't know blow it so to speak i mean look of course compton and mcnerney can up their level but right now they're not controlling any facet of the game they're not controlling the lobs and as long as arrived parsons don't give away donate points two faults you know it just looks like they just have a handle on every part and there's a quick easy hole to take into 5'3 back-to-back missed returns from compton mcnerney there they just don't look comfortable i think the strategy has really thrown them off i mean they're not comfortable at all you know you kind of did the keys to winning in the beginning mark where you're talking about the compton backhand i mean the compton backhand has been a source of errors not winners right and if you're if you're going to draw it up that way it's going to be hard for compton and mcnerney to win great challenge he served there for compton i like how he goes from the underhand to the overhand mixes them up great lobster so that's beautiful you're afraid of the cut drop you move forward and he just holds it yeah we can get a replay of that as well it'd be amazing all right oh what a shot from mariah oh two points from the match two points from the match they just look like they're been fighting up hill the whole way compton mcnerney with the fake jumps [Music] ah [Applause] great action both teams here that's a great attack volley from mcmahon fighting hard [Applause] you've got something security does as well as anybody in the country match point great job all right perfect tough volley gets it just out of the reach of orion get this game make him serve it out and then just play a really s tough tough game make orion parsons win it absolutely sir but that's the pressure of serving the parsons too nice dig for carson's great angle a lot of forehead volleys from compton he plays a lot of foreign he's kind of a little bit of a lazy fair volley or you just sort of put his hands on the ball he's got good hands oh he was gonna carve that oh what a shot right into the crease big moment great play from compton mcnerney they're hanging in there coming up with the goods and the big moments right now wasn't a bad point at all from mariah parsons took a took a nick to beat him vicious one oh that's the vintage backhand we haven't quite seen enough of him he hasn't been comfortable enough to hit that he could hit that all day but he's been spun around by a riot throughout the day just transition stuff to the best [Applause] i think he was actually trying to hit it in but he was clearly trying to frame orion hit him with the ball while they catch him in transition sometimes the player is moving like that it's hard for him to get out of the way but he tags it long no no i saw it i mean that was good better highlights there you go highlighted that was incredible stuff multiple players taking a deep breath after that crazy point yeah i think right now oh no johan duran still tagged some people here and there but compton tags as many people as anyone because he hits these up rolls and he just rips it at you and he'll go right after the body hit humphries a couple of times he'd burst a couple of times marching his way to the finals nope ah there it is make him [Applause] you're starting to see some of the signs you want to see i mean competent a couple balls aggressively there yeah i felt a little bit sort of like we were talking about throughout mark that compton's had like all those looks there the compton crush like this one here it's just a beautiful ball and he can do that all day long those are in transition he's had a hard time getting looks when he's in the backcourt i love that and ariah is just hitting the overheads out of he's he's just had a tough time getting any looks he's been spun around and it's been very tough so let's they're gonna have to find a way to do it here that was the first game i really felt like they won brad a great sign for them going forward they definitely did great points yup they're gonna switch back i'd like to see a little the other but maybe they're just committed at this point bernie's obviously comfortable on the on the outside he played there for years with trevinsky is when he hits a drive then he gets another two drives right like this type of thing right there see the sun shining a cop in space this is the ball right there he starts moving he got it is he touching the net he didn't that's incredible get there from mcnerney great athleticism got to see that one again hopefully john scott's got the replay there yeah big shout out to enid has done just a brilliant job all weekend bradford absolutely incredible stuff so this is just a great point it's always fun to see as the match gets tighter the points get tighter players recognize they can't afford the loose errors at these moments gotta make your phone win this game well still taking a shot or two to make sure they know you're gonna hit it one after another into the corner and you like you said mark compton's used to moving freely you know without having to play 20 balls in a row not hit recover hit recovery because they're coming right back at him it's just a different animal somebody comes after you like this and most people do not let's go there's a huge point because brian compton weathers the storm comes up with a big forehand and forces the volley around perfect point for them brian to get got to make a ryan parsons finish him off love it looks much better much more commitment of those he had to make swings really tough get there which he did finally got the form but that was 50 balls into it that's what it takes ah in a strange way even though he's drawing compton up it's what ariah wants the chaos the exchange chaos yep 100 right bradford always feels that he might lose somebody feels he has the advantage in it every time and by and large he does typical one-time perfect backhand from horses oh compton wasn't ready for that ball he wasn't 30 15. that actually could be almost a source of being like let me take a ball off i don't want to have to play this one points for the match again that's a great leave and parsons just not rolling that forehand as well as he has dirty you said he was having a little trouble with that semi-final yep all right such a reliable money server yeah he rarely faults he's a challenging serve and he backs it up with a really good volley ernie doing a really good job of getting the ball apart shot at his feet marcis tries to one time a half volley but it just can't come up with it 40. awesome that's mcnerdy's lobs that's mcnerney's lobs right there ah oh that just kills you yeah it's like a momentum killer but back to the drawing board because what are you gonna do another good one there oh they made it though firing this is competent you see him dealing with the drives one after another but exceptional positioning and volley defense over there ryan parker and you see him firing him at parsons weirdly he probably misses less volleys than a riot but he doesn't get nearly as many winners what was that miss from compton there i don't know but now we're at back out of nowhere match point number three number two oh he takes a hard feather how should we just look at that back [Applause] perfect ball he hits that ball from lower than that better basically almost anybody couple years ago in philadelphia one of the early tournaments for ryan two match parsons great shot they had two match points against trevinsky mcnerdy only to losing three i'm sure they don't want to see a repeat here match point number three do not see what a gutsy shot from mariah there brad i mean how many guys in the country are gonna hit that at five four deuce it's only a handful who can't even hit it oh this is what you're talking about though mark let them hanging around eventually they're going to get elect cord or something i mean maybe you will but can't let them hang around that's out here we go another point for five oh really raised his level these last 10 15 minutes without a doubt and mcnerdy starting to drive his return oh boy the two break points they've had i miss loving this return i mean score you gotta go for it right but that one i don't mind i mean that that's his bread and butter he just missed it missed it badly wow what a game mariah served right had faulted once you oh great exchange that is a great dig oh he did not read that properly moves like it's a side back screen but it's heading right into the back and rebounds up the side for match point number four mark yeah number four boy that was an elementary mistake too got to play the rail on that ball [Applause] a lot of fun it was a great match almost surprising to see you know we talked about the keys of victory like we were talking before mark you know they just took compton and mcnerney out of the game they got no blitz points from mcnerney they relentlessly attacked thompson in sort of side screen and they weathered the one blurt they kind of had in the in the second set came back and six four six four they were really in control of almost the entire thing and a great job i think for mcnerney and compton to just kind of fight their way the way they did really fun match see those guys get back into it really saw their heart and just really played started to get back into it and you know point or two away from obviously a point away from getting to five all in which case it's anybody's match i am more mature see ryan saying i am more mature now i am more mature now well we'd have to take a goal on that we have to take a poll on that you know we do have uh december 12th will be our next live stream mark uh that was a fun tournament chicago charities puts it on like always should we got a bunch of thanks to give out i'm going to leave that to you and go on the court for an encore interview and you can take us there mark it was a pleasure calling that final with you as always everybody stay tuned for december 12th always fun bradford yeah just a great weekend to paddle at charities john noble and his team always put on a great event and especially kudos to john scott doing the live streaming doing this stuff remotely it's it's just not easy he and anne waldron and jerry veont they do just a wonderful job but a huge win for ariah parsons he gets their first chicago charities together they've done it separately but have never won it together i think this is the first time they've played it together ironically enough so they're 1-0 but uh great action and look forward to some more great paddles as the year unfolds i think our next tournament is in detroit early december that's what brad was referring to but uh yeah just high-flying paddle a lot of exchanges of the net mcnerney compton kind of announcing themselves as challengers to internationals you could see where the the strategy today from mariah parsons really kind of set them back i think mcnerney was compton was just uncomfortable with it that's a that's a gutsy way to play the game to go after the other team's big offense and ryan parsons had all the answers see bradford out there looking to get a microphone over here jackie cameron big shout out to jackie cameron tour director i see nindy pike and of course the incomparable anshiti the apta's executive director doing a wonderful job we've got parsons we need aria and we need a camera okay here comes ariah mindy pike getting ready to take some pictures bradford is maneuvering them into position and we should have an interview shortly here hope everybody enjoyed our coverage this weekend bringing you the couple of courts see some new teams some upsets see the fourth seed in the six seat and the finals is not normal i think it's gonna be that type of year i think there are literally five or six teams that could win nationals this year the number four seeds mark parsons and juan araya congratulations guys that was a great hard-fought victory now we were watching the match we sort of did the vikings keys to victory and we were talking about you know compton's backhand his ability to drive it and control it your guys ability to and the mcnerney blitz and you really neutralize both of them it's a surprise the conventional wisdom is to sort of dump the ball deep into graham mcdonough's backhand but you went after compton in his corner was that just a thought or you guys just came upon that in the match i go yeah but you'll translate yes you translate that okay here you go so um i think that we've been rolling very well throughout the tournament that's one of the things that we did the best they um it's funny because we were saying that we weren't playing our best but we did volley very well so um i think that we weren't that afraid of compton's backhand so we try to attack him and force him to drive and then try to volley behind him and attack his corner because graham can control the pace of the game and we tried to take that away from them we wanted to play at our speed and i think that worked out for us yeah it certainly did work out for you did you have any way and by doing that it sort of also seemingly took away any of uh mcnerdy's abilities to blitz and was that like a did that just sort of happen or was that part of what you thought might happen yeah i mean look i the big thing that he juan wanted me doing which you know i i agreed with was just dumping the middle and not giving you know a high ball there so that they could get down the line and then you know mcnearney can start to blitz more and everything else so we wanted him lobbying off out of the backhand side or off of his backhand side through the middle and then you know we're going to take our chances going into compton's corner all right now you mentioned before like as we were talking just before the interview started you didn't as you know from us in the booth it looked like you played pretty well but it still seemed like there are these moments like where you weren't feeling it like you weren't feeling your forehand today what do you do when that happens mark i never feel my forehand that's an issue um you know it was it was weird i actually felt really i felt pretty good yesterday i didn't feel great today i i for some my timing was a little off uh that partly or largely is due to probably my opponents uh making my timing off um but you know that's when i knew i needed to bear down and get more balls in play and let him do what he does and luckily i was able to pull that off well it's a great victory juan you were carving up overheads into the screen today you know with just incredible efficiency and really making a spin the accuracy are you picking the spot were you trying to keep a cadence just one after another yeah i was trying to mix it up going side back back side and i was trying to make compton spin around that's why i was going hard spin to the back wire trying to find his side wire on the ball on his way down so if he had to drive the ball he would have to drive up on it and so i was trying to move him around because if i i could not have him drive off the deck his drives are very very good so i was trying to mix it up i'm pushing some deep of course it's hard to hit the targets all the time some stay short and then they hit so but again i think we've all lived extremely well and that helped a lot uh throughout the tournament i mean yesterday we played great a great quarterfinals match and today in the morning we volley great against johan and steve they're amazing and i think that that's that was the key to our victory so that's a i must say we all voted very well today well that's perfect congratulations to our 2021 winners of the chicago charities mark parsons juan aria will we see you guys in detroit yes what actually we're the first team yes yeah well we have to vet our uh you know the people who sign up credit checks something like that any final shout outs before you sign
