[Music] [Applause] the can-am renegade for more than a decade this sport 4x4 has been one of the most radical atvs you can throw a leg over when the original renegade 800 was released in 2007 its performance easily eclipsed the other sport 4x4 machines at the time in 2008 the renegade 500 later 570 along with the 800x package were added to can-am's lineup the x package benefited from fully adjustable kyb shocks aluminum handlebars raised metal foot pegs aluminum skid plate and reinforced aluminum wheels based on what can-am learned in grand national cross-country racing the renegade xxc cross country race package was introduced in 2010 building on the x package it gained adjustable dual mode dynamic power steering a front sway bar can-am's faster engaging visco-lock qe front differential and beadlock aluminum wheels [Applause] the 82 horsepower renegade 1000 was added in 2012. the perfect time for can-am to introduce their generation 2 chassis the g2 chassis was lighter stronger stiffer and better handling thanks to a revised geometry dynamic power steering went from buy to try mode in 2012 with the addition of a third map with the release of the 89 horsepower polaris scrambler xp-1000 in 2014. k m increased the 1000's horsepower to 89 in 2016 to keep pace in the horsepower war even still the 82 horsepower version was good enough to beat the polaris scrambler xp-1000 in dirt tracks 2014 shootout make sure to check out these other videos to get caught up on your renegade history in 2019 can-am increased the horsepower on the 1000 to 91 accompanied by a number of even more significant updates to the chassis and suspension sharing nearly identical engine chassis and base suspension settings with the sport utility outlander 1000r k m put most of their effort into marketing the outlanders updates leaving some enthusiasts completely in the dark that the renegade had even been updated which we're about to take care of atv on demand's test of the 2021 can-am renegade 1000r xxc was made possible by maxima premium atv engine oil formulated for today's higher revving hotter running high performance engines exceeding oem specifications its proprietary additives create a sheer stable polymer system providing unsurpassed protection against wear oxidation viscosity and thermal breakdown its wet clutch formula provides outstanding fade free clutch performance maxima premium atv engine oil available at powersports dealers everywhere coming soon it's the can-am renegade 1000r xxc versus outlander 1000r xtp shootout subscribe now watch atv on demand's 1000cc sport utility shootout dominating can-am outlander 1000xtp take on the cross-country racing dominating renegade 1000r xxc we know the outlander works harder but is the renegade faster on the trail we're going to find out renegade xxc packages are available starting at 12 999 dollars for the 850 and 13 949 dollars for the 1000. the black and can am red version we're testing lists for 14 149 can amps in our test unit with a co-branded yoshimura performance exhaust it will work with a stock fuel mapping but we'd recommend adding a fuel management system to maximize horsepower and lower operating temperatures the exhaust is lighter than stock and comes with a spark arrestor an extreme front bumper had also been installed along with its low profile fenders and racy lines the renegade foregoes the right side engine cover exposing its imposing rotex power plant the 1000r is powered by a water-cooled fuel-injected 976 cc v-twin four-stroke engine with four valves and single of red cams per cylinder a fully automatic engine braking equipped continuously variable transmission features high and low forward ranges plus neutral reverse in park selected by gated shifter 2019's increase from 89 to 91 horsepower is due to the addition of a knock sensor which automatically optimizes timing to match varying fuel quality can-am recommends premium pump gas to maximize performance the rear differential was said to have been made 50 stronger back in 2019 thanks to an increase in size from 143 to 155 millimeters a right side handlebar mounted switch selects between two and four-wheel drive featuring can-am's viscoloc qe auto-locking front differential it operates as a limited-slip front-end progressively locking in four-wheel drive if one front wheel begins to slip it then progressively unlocks when traction has been restored can-am recommends switching drive modes while stopped with the engine at idle we left ours in four-wheel drive the majority of the time with the throttle cable replaced with a throttle by wire system can-am's intelligent throttle control was added in 2019 a rocker button on the throttle allows you to select between three different throttle modes eco normal and sport eco mode reduces top speed to 43 miles per hour across the entire throw of the throttle allowing for easier throttle modulation normal mode is designed to deliver full throttle with smooth initial throttle delivery [Music] sport mode delivers snappier more immediate throttle response with less throttle lever movement needed intelligent throttle control is also designed to filter out unwanted throttle inputs from riding in rough terrain starting the engine requires the use of one of knm's digitally encoded security system keys the renegade comes to life with the push of the start button after 10 to 15 seconds the idle settles down and the engine is ready for action seemingly endless horsepower and torque is available at all rpms clutch engagement is very snappy and responsive both off the line and accelerating with speed even with the throttle in the eco mode the clutch still provides some snap that's helpful when you need a little kick to get rolling the hard-hitting clutching could intimidate beginners that probably shouldn't be riding this machine anyway when discussing power we have to talk about the throttle we've heard complaints about its shape and it being too smooth although some like it's light action and its electronic function is excellent all three throttle modes are beneficial depending upon the terrain or your mood for the renegade we'd greatly prefer a three position switch that would allow you to instantly and intuitively switch between the different throttle modes this would increase their usefulness by not requiring you to lose a few seconds every time you switch throttle modes eco mode does well in mellowing out the power and filtering out jerky unwanted throttle inputs it also makes the british power much more manageable when casually cruising through tight twisty sections normal mode provides full throttle wide open with smooth delivery off the bottom sport mode delivers more throttle sooner in the throttle throw with crisp precise throttle response sport mode provides the most direct throttle feel with virtually zero detectable lag when you punch the gas at any rpm the more directly connected feeling lets you really appreciate just how insanely powerful the big rotax v-twin actually is regardless of your current speed and the steepness of the terrain in front of you the engine feels unaffected when you ask for more and is always willing to build rpms in a hurry launching out of the hole the renegade will stand straight up if you don't respect the throttle lag is not an issue getting in and out of corners at speed either the sporty responsive nature of the engine and transmission lend themselves to jumping wheelies or cracking the throttle to get you out of trouble if needed as 4x4 engines go nothing is faster more thrilling or simply mind-blowing to ride in the renegade 1000r as the third can-am atv we've tested with our visco-lock qe 4-wheel drive system we're very happy with its performance locking in both front wheels seemingly instantly when needed some may still demand a manually lockable front differential but we simply don't see the need for it on a go fast machine like this engine braking strikes a good balance between keeping speeds under control at lower speed without feeling like you dropped anchor when chopping the throttle at higher speeds overall there's more performance than anyone can make use of but that's what makes it fun and besides 850 just doesn't create as much sticker envy can-am claimed to have delivered the industry's best handling stability and comfort thanks to brand new suspension in 2019 the renegade grew 2 inches in width to 48 inches thanks to new 1-inch longer a-arms and longer wider torsional trailing independent rear arms this was accomplished without raising the machine's center of gravity retaining an overall height of 49 inches the frame received minor changes to complement the machine's wider stance the a-arms were completely redesigned with their wide arc shape offering an additional 1.4 inches of ground clearance at the midpoint they were accompanied by redesigned front axle guards the renegade uses a 13.5 millimeter front sway bar allowing for the use of a softer rear sway bar the goal is to improve rear wheel independence aiding comfort while enhancing contact with the ground for better traction and turns taking advantage of the updated chassis required updated shock settings the longer control arms allow for two tenths of an inch more wheel travel up front at 9.2 inches and six tenths of an inch more wheel travel out back at nine point nine inches base model renegade eight fifty and one thousands use preload adjustable fox podium 1.5 shocks with the xxc models using podium 1.5 rc2 shocks the rc2s deliver what we'd expect from race ready shocks with threaded spring preload high and low speed compression and rebound damping adjustments trimod dynamic power steering allows you to choose between three different levels of assistance all of which are said to offer more assistance at lower speeds or when the rider or the terrain puts more demand on the steering all of the renegades use itp hole shot atr tires 25 812 fronts and 25 10 12 rears the xxc models use 12 inch cast aluminum b lock wheels the tire and wheel diameter is ideal for aggressive trail rider but we wish they would have went with a square setup with the same width tires and wheels at all four corners the more common setup in cross-country racing with a claimed dry weight of 710 pounds the renegade 1000rxc is 25 pounds lighter than the polaris scrambler 850 and 116 pounds lighter than the outlander 1000rxtp or xxc with 10 and a half inches of ground clearance the renegade stands 49 inches tall with a 34 and a half inch seat height a 51 inch wheelbase accompanies its 48 inch width factory suspension settings are well suited for dealing with the monstrous motor stock suspension settings are race pace ready but we'd soften things up a bit for all-day rides the shocks seem to work better the harder we push the renegade the ride is firm over small rocks and roots respawning better under the pressure of being hard on the gas or brakes the ride remains relatively firm over medium-sized hits from logs larger rocks or square edged holes in the trail jarring impacts are eaten up by the shocks while still reminding you that there's plenty of suspension travel left in reserve encouraging you to push your limits since some cross-country races have a motocross track section we wandered onto one of these fork mx tracks to test the limits of suspension the renegade could carry some impressive speed to the roller section only finding the limits of its travel when you really push hard we'd expect the renegade 1000r xxc to be pretty capable and wide open whooped out terrain evan was touching down rather smoothly on the downside of this 40-foot double with moderate bottoming when coming up short the renegade's added width and dual sway bars yield minimum body roll allowing you to rail corners hooked up and tackle off-camber trails with aggression in two-wheel drive steering accuracy is pretty good at low to intermediate intensity but the front end started pushing a bit when we started charging corners with the back end hooked up like astute 4x4 g and cc racers we kept four-wheel drive engaged majority of the time which helps pull you through corners improving steering accuracy a little less front spring preload and or low speed compression damping also helps more accurate handling is one reason many gncc racers choose to run the same size tires and wheels at all four corners steering feel is good the differences between the different power steering modes is small but noticeable we switch between the mid and max settings the majority of the time it works well and keeps you feeling connected to the trail the whole shot atr tires seem like a good fit for the renegade they offer good traction and their radial design aids in filtering out smaller bumps but we're not sure if they perform better than the more puncture resistant itp terra cross tires that come on the outlanders stopping power is provided by dual hydraulic disc brakes up front with 214 millimeter rotors and dual piston calipers a similarly appointed single hydraulic disc brake is used out back all using steel braided brake lines a left side handlebar mounted lever operates the brakes at both ends with a right side mounted foot pedal operating the rear brake independently braking power and feel are both very good the single ever braking is a bit biased toward the front wheels as you would want the rear brakes pedal isn't a pretty good position that's better than the outlanders albeit still a little high along with park and the transmission there's also a handlebar mounted parking brake that's easy to engage being a sport 4x4 there isn't much in the way of onboard storage or hauling capacity a small textured spot on the center of the rear racks with a few tie down hooks allow you to attach up to 35 pounds of cargo an accessory bolt-on hitch will allow you to tow up to 300 pounds you can add a bunch of accessories that will allow you to haul items along but at that rate you might as well buy the outlander xtp or xxc the renegade is pretty well appointed for its sporty intentions it's a bit wider than we like between our feet but you get used to it the seat is comfy yet easy to move around on the taller metal foot pegs on the renegade shorten the distance between the foot pegs in the seat compared to the outlander 1000 xtp that we tested aiding rider movement on the renegade the metal foot pegs are a big upgrade that most outlander owners will want to add to improve grip and control especially in muddy or snowy conditions a fully digital instrument display is mounted in front of instead of on top of the handlebars this makes it easy to outfit the renegade with any type of aftermarket handlebar style or bin you prefer tapered aluminum handlebars come standard adding to the machine's race ready setup along with sports style wrap-around handguards four fender-mounted 60-watt projector beam headlights light up the trail quite well at night 60 watt tail and brake lights are found out back a disproportionate number of cross-country championships and the number of riders who choose to race the renegade 1000 are are proof that it's the fastest 4x4 atv in the woods many years ago we tweaked an old outlander 800 on a relatively easy jump today can-am has made huge strides in quality of construction has proven to us throughout our recent abuse of outlander and renegade testing we're also hearing good things from private owners who've racked up well over a thousand relatively hard miles de reci racing owner santo dirici tells us that he'd expect the renegade to hold up well for the beginner level cross-country racer without all the gusseting and modifications done to his rider pro 4x4 gncc champion landon wolff's renegade we'd expect a typical trail rider to get years out of one without any major issues as pure thrills go the renegade 1000r is on par with legends like the yamaha banshee suzuki lt 500 quad racer and kawasaki takadi 3. of course there are things that those lightweight two-wheel drive sport machines do better but the renegade is the only one of the group providing the capability of four-wheel drive this is an atv we've dreamed of testing for some time now and it easily lived up to our expectations if you want to say you've written the baddest atv's ever produced the renegade 1000r should be on your list whether you're in need of a 4x4 for cross-country racing or simply want the fastest 4x4 atv in the woods hold on tight the can-am renegade 1000r xxc is the atv for you learn more about the 2021 can-am renegade 1000r xxc and their full
