this is the new c8 z51 performance package did corvette truly get up to the rank of supercar with this generation today we're going to put it up against the lamborghini huracan and find out this is track attack [Music] [Music] [Music] uh [Music] this is the new 2020 chevy corvette stingray chevy has spent years refining a winning formula with the corvette being one of the best selling sports cars in history and racking up more wins in motorsports than most other brands they must have come to the conclusion that they achieved perfection with a c7 because in this generation they decided to go back to the drawing board no longer does the corvette come with a manual transmission the only choice now is a modern eight speed dual clutch gearbox instead of a simple soft top convertible you get a retractable hard top powered by no less than six electric motors it does still have the familiar chevy small block v8 under the hood but this time it's under a different hood with the new mid-engine layout the engineers were able to do a lot more with the engine this time around with the lt2 they were able to sit at one inch lower down in the chassis which greatly improves handling performance also they have more room for the intake and also the exhaust headers so that means they're able to get a little more horsepower out of the engine and get a little more sound out of it as well and that is the point of the ca chevy is trying to elevate this car from a world-class sports car to a true supercar now one of the most defining characteristics of any good supercar is the performance and this car has it it has about 500 horsepower mid-engine layout as we already mentioned and it can do almost 200 miles per hour and even more impressive it'll actually do zero to 60 in just under three seconds those are definitely supercar performance numbers so to start off the review i have the car here in touring mode i want to see what it's like as an actual car first and i have to say with the new chassis and especially the magnetic ride suspension it's actually a very very nice driving car the suspension is really soft and compliant soaks up the bumps quite nicely the steering is very soft very comfortable and like this car drives just as good as a mercedes or a lexus doesn't quite have the same comfort and interior space but that being said you can still easily daily this car assuming you can put up with a lack of space and one of the best things about this car in spite of its high-tech suspension modern transmission and brand new chassis is the chevy v8 they've been making beats for a very long time and doing a really good job at it let me demonstrate in typical v8 fashion it's got lots of torque it revs out pretty good right to its 6500 rpm redline it makes some good jam but i do have to admit it's not quite as fast i expected it to be now with that being said it's not just power that determines acceleration a big portion of that of course is the gearing we know this thing has a lot of gears and that's really going to help it stay in the power band however the one thing i do love about this engine is the naturally aspirated power band i just love driving a naturally aspirated engine the gas pedal is your friend you can give it one percent more throttle and the car will give you one percent more throttle you don't have to worry about turbo lag you don't have to worry about any hybrid stuff it's just you and the gas pedal the first thing i noticed when i got into this car this morning was the interior actually now the c7 corvette interior is pretty nice actually it's a nice place to be i think it's the first time corvette actually made a really high class nice interior now this is definitely a step above that the first thing i like about it is the very cockpit feeling of it it really feels like this fighter jet sort of cockpit thing everything is very driver-centric i really like the controls here this kind of weird line of buttons beside you i know when i first saw in pictures and videos i kind of thought it was weird looking and awkward but now that i'm actually sitting here it's actually really cool the rest of the cockpit is well laid out all the controls for the important stuff the driving modes and the gear changes are right here my right hand can just drop down just off the wheel and get them nice big infotainment system pretty cool i love the lcd dash i really like the square steering wheel the seating position is actually really really noteworthy in this car a lot of times in sports cars or supercars you'll get a nice seating position for performance driving but you don't always get that race car like perfect driving seating position feel this car as soon as i set everything up for my position like instantly you feel it like you're connected with this car this is a great great seating position chevy clearly spent some time trying to figure out how to get the driver in the right spot to drive this car i really like it the 8-speed dual clutch transmission this car is actually quite good it reacts to the paddle shifts immediately in sport mode on the up shift and the downshift and it handles the shift quite smoothly even in track mode a lot of high performance cars in track mode will make the shifts really abrupt to make the car feel sportier which sometimes can upset the balance of the car a little bit especially if you're in the middle of a corner this one though is actually pretty smooth even though it's very quick chevy obviously opted for a bit more practical performance and a little less experience with that but as a race car driver i prefer that i do want my performance and i want it to work properly now i see that okay let's try a little faster corner here let's go through corner one with a little bit of hustle wow car turns in nice at speed nice and planted in the middle of the corner uh really good on the power and the exit of the corner with this i like it okay corner three understeer wow so that's interesting because people complain a lot about the understeer in the c8 corvette so far i'm finding too much understeer i'm impressed for the first mid-engine chassis from chevy in many many years i believe the last time was in the 80s with the pontiac fiero this is the first time gm engineers have done a mid-engine chassis and they did a pretty good job of this i have to say now there is one element where the gm engineers did copy other supercars this car actually has active aero [Music] whoops i guess chevy did that one by accident this is a great sports car it's fun it's fast it does all the right things a great sports car should do but is it a supercar well the last generation c7 06 and then even the line toppings that are one could hold its own with pretty much any supercraft on a racetrack so does that make the corvette a supercar no but then the question is what else does it need to be a supercar well let's ask an italian [Music] lamborghini created the supercar segment in 1965 when the lamborghini miura p400 prototype was introduced to the world it was the first supercar to feature a two-seat mid-engine layout when it went into production in 1966 it was the fastest production road car in the world and is often considered the most beautiful car ever designed moving forward about 75 years and you have this car the lamborghini huracan 580-2 for a cool 240 000 you get an italian supercar with a hybrid carbon aluminum chassis seven speed dual clutch gearbox and some of the coolest styling offered on the market today oh and lamborghini was kind enough to throw in this feature as well a 5.2 liter dry sub v10 engine revving to 8 000 rpm [Music] and all of this italian frenzy in a package that weighs just over 3000 pounds clearly lamborghini still knows how to build a supercar now the ride quality in this car i have to admit isn't as good as the corvette the chassis is a lot stiffer the ride is bumpier yes this still has magnetic ride suspension in it but clearly even in the softest driving mode which is strata here on the steering wheel it is still not tuned to be as nice and comfortable as the corvette but again this is a supercar it's not meant to be a daily driver you're not paying the money so you can go get groceries and drop the kids off to soccer this car is meant to be fun it's meant to be fast it's meant to be exciting now with that being said let's put the car in fun mode or in this case that's going to be corsa so we're going to hit the button on the steering wheel i'm going to put in corsa which automatically puts the car in manual mode it cannot be an automatic when it's in track mode we're going to turn off the esc here so we have no stability control all right now let's see what the car is like throttle response is a lot touchier wow gear changers are good in this i would say even a little faster a little sharper than the corvette you can tell this transmission was definitely built for performance there's nothing quite like an italian v10 behind you so it doesn't quite have the same torque as the corvette the corvette at pretty much any rpm just kind of puts you in the seat a lot more than this one does i have to admit but as this one starts to rev out it just keeps pulling harder and harder and harder the v8 in the corvette has that flat torque curve and then once you kind of hit about 4 000 ish rpm it just kind of stays there this thing just keeps going and going right to redline so in other words you do have to work this motor a little bit more to get the performance out of it what i mean is you have to keep the rpms up you have to be a little more conscious of what gear you're in for sure but for me personally i enjoy that i want to make sure that the driving experience involves me as much as possible i don't want the card to do the driving for me i want to make sure that i can do it the turn in the lamborghini is fantastic as soon as you turn the wheel the nose just darts right in no fuss no complaints it's excellent the corvette steering was quite good i have to say the lamborghini turn in is a little bit better i will say though while in the corner it's kind of hard to say which one really has a better chassis the corvette felt a little more planted i think the lamborghini feels a little stiffer a little more nervous in the corners especially considering cayuga isn't the smoothest race track in the world maybe if this was on say mo sport grand prix track or another big grand prix smoother racetrack this car might feel a little more planted i really enjoy the throttle response in this car better with the little bit less torque especially in the lower range and the mid-range actually makes this a little bit easier to manage in terms of the throttle so when you're going through the corner you don't have as much instant torque which means it's a bit easier to play with the gas pedal and not pay for your mistakes but i do have to say with the stiffer ride the sharper steering the fantastic engine the more race inspired gearbox we'll say it this car does feel more like a race car there is something about supercars that can't quite be quantified the same way you can't quantify the human soul is the same way you can't quantify the soul of a true supercar it's just something about the way it makes you feel it makes you feel super so the new c8 corvette after my initial review i have to say it actually seems like a really good sports car definitely a big improvement over the c7 generation and that's saying a lot because the c7 generation was quite good however the big question is being a mid-engine layout and kind of getting a bit more exotic looks is it really a supercar is it competing with supercars well to find out today we actually have a very special guest we have matt stokes market segment manager from gm matt good to have you so thanks for joining us today matt really appreciate you coming out with us today thanks for having me yeah i know for sure so the big question i want to ask right off the bat with this car what really was your benchmark like were you guys trying to sort of stay in the premium sports car market or were you really trying to go after the big boys go after the supercars obviously in this episode we're putting it up against you know lamborghini a real serious contender so tell me what really were you guys doing with this car well typically we're benchmarked against our nearest competitors like porsche and the 911s now that we have moved to a mid-engine platform we definitely did we actually purchased a ferrari 458 right and it was completely disassembled and and studied very thoroughly and learned what you could from that yeah yeah definitely cool so the one thing i'm really excited about i do want to share is again my initial review with this car i found it's it's an exceptionally good sports car and let's face it this is the base stingray model this isn't the zetto six this isn't zero one this isn't whatever else you guys have coming down the pipe so i'm really anxious to see what those cars are gonna be like again when we see the performance testing later in the episode it'll allude to obviously how good or maybe not this new car is but then again i'm really anxious to see what the new ones coming down the pipeline will be now the one thing i'm wondering about though and again you can share as much as you're allowed to is again there's all this talk you know especially on gm authority and things like that about the new z06 coming down it's talking about you know potential powertrain options and different suspension things and all sorts of little rumors i assume that that is going to be quite a quantum leap over this car in terms of performance well we'll have to wait and see i guess so a very political response [Laughter] so the really important question i ask you now we have to do some performance testing between this car and the lamborghini now we already know this is a great sports car but i still am not convinced it's a supercar yet again great sports car not supercar lamborghini supercar how do you think this is going to do up against the lamborghini in terms of performance testing what do you think well i i think the fact that we're sitting here comparing a corvette to a lamborghini is pretty telling uh it's a it's a bit of a testament to its capabilities and this thing has stormed onto the scene in such a positive way and i don't know how it's going to shape up against the lambo but it's certainly not going to get left in the dust that's for sure so you think it's definitely going to hold its own at least oh absolutely all day long okay so a lot of confidence in your product but you guys kind of have to be but well it's easy to be confident about this corvette again more political responses good job matt well then you know what how about we uh roll the clips and let's find out how the corvette did against the lamborghini awesome i'm excited to see it all right let's see how the lambo does today for our challenge we decided to pit these two cars against each other in an autocross course the reason why we chose that is the corvette does suffer from understeer so with low speed tight corners like you would see in autocross course it's really really going to show how bad the understeer is or if it's just mild especially compared to this lamborghini which seems to have really great turn in and rotate so well so you want to put it through their paces on this course to see how they compare the one thing i like about this challenge which i've found out i'm a bit more qualified to do this one than say leaving parking lot meets with mustangs is because i have been doing autocross for about 18 years now i have quite a few series and championships to my name so hopefully i can take all that experience and i can combat that understeer in the corvette [Applause] autocross is a motorsport event where competitors do timed runs through a technical course made up of pylons events are usually held in large venues such as parking lots or airport runways cars are divided into various classes based on the level of performance through the day competitors take turns during multiple runs through the course the fastest time of the day is what determines their final position in their respective class autocross courses are made up of several different types of elements gates double gates linears and slaloms gates are two pylons that the car has to drive through double gates are a gate that has to be driven through twice before the end of the run leaners are cones lying down on the side and are pointing in the direction the car has to go slaloms are a line of cones that the car has to zigzag through autocross courses tend to place demands on car handling and driver skill rather than on engine power and outright speed each course is unique and is of a new design at every single event top speeds are generally slower when compared to speeds achieved on actual race tracks however the demand on the driver is usually much higher than most other forms of motorsports due to the large number of elements packed into each course time is 61.211 for car number 69 driven by colon case mrs collins okay first autocross run in the corvette let's see what this big beast can do around the course okay let's try to carry a little more speed into the slalom this time get out of it a little cleaner okay get some rotation through here rotate oh understeer i should have braked earlier okay i can carry a little more into the box here we go okay this corner is super super tight so i wish i had a miata right now okay back to the box uh understeer everywhere it's okay this thing is a hairy italian beast in typical italian fashion i have one more run in this car i think i can beat the c8 time with it [Music] [Music] this thing rotates so nicely way better than the corvette does definitely helps for autocross course like this [Music] okay let's navigate through the slalom i think this is going to be a faster run oh don't lose it at the end here we go on power cross the line i think i beat it i think i beat the corvette's time that felt quicker let's find out what [Music] okay drag race number one let's show the corvette what a supercar can do [Music] oh we got them so after our initial round of performance testing the corvette gets a win and the lambo gets a win did you expect the corvette to beat the lambo in the autocross i i'm not sure i expected it but i'm also not surprised okay so you think the corvette definitely had that in it eh oh totally totally we're here for a reason comparing a corvette to a lambo you know we're not comparing a honda to a helicopter or anything this is it's a pretty close comparison it was yeah so instantly enough you notice the times were very very close within a few tenths so you know they were within like inches of each other what about the msrps that's a different conversation now yeah interesting though about that so performance wise yeah the corvette did actually echo the lamborghini in terms of the times we did do a couple of runs with both cars and overall the fastest time was granted to the corvette now here's the big thing we got to talk about the elephant in the room understeer in the c8 i'm sure it's the first time you've heard that right yes okay yes cool then let me get to speed so obviously as we know lots of automotive journalists have praised the c8 for lots of things but they've all bashed it for its understeer characteristics i have my opinion on that but i want to hear your take on that first what's your take on the whole understeer issue with the c8 you have to remember that 95 of the people that own and drive this car are not going to be spending either any time or not a lot of time on a race track so when we're talking about creating and balancing a vehicle it's geared towards the the average person who's going to be driving it it definitely has absurd track capabilities and and extremely high performance but it is meant for almost like you described where the average person getting into this vehicle can feel confident driving it and feel comfortable driving it however the only thing i think that's causing the understeer is just the difference in the offset from front to rear in terms of the tire size mid engine will traditionally always have more traction than rear bigger tire because you kind of have to where the engine sits this thing is probably a bit more extreme in that ratio so i think obviously you know correct me if i'm wrong gm did that on purpose to have the understeer but what they didn't do was they didn't dial understeer in terms of the chassis and suspension setup because i've noticed that once you start learning how to rotate the car and manage the weight there really isn't understeer in this car it'll turn in just as good as you want it to it'll still rotate and it'll do so very predictably and that's what i found going through the autocross course now high-speed cornering is a little bit different puts a little bit different demands on the car so now we have to put it through its paces on the full hot lap against the lamborghini this is going to be interesting because we already know the lamborghini has the power advantage autocross it can't really use that in fact it probably kind of hurt the car a bit because all that horsepower at low speeds is a bit harder to manage and that's what we set the lamborghini and autocross a little bit trickier to drive through the course now using that power in the full course isn't going to be as tricky so with the hot laps on the full course how do you think the corvette's going to stack up against the lambo i'm a little more nervous about this one admittedly but lambo's got that big v10 so i could see it pulling away in the straights because it does have a little more high-end power yes however this is a highly highly capable vehicle that's put up some really really impressive lap times on racetracks all around the world so if lambo is going to uh um gonna take this one away they're it's not gonna be an easy uh and an easy and easy race for it so you think the corvette's really gonna put up a fight in this one eh absolutely i think this corvette could put up a fight against some of the most expensive vehicles in the world it's a pretty bold statement so but i agree again the car is quite good it has good performance i i think it's going to be a very interesting result we'll have to see if the corvette keeps up we know the lambo on paper definitely has the advantage no doubt about that but as we found out the corvette seems to be quite capable in spite of just the numbers on paper so let's find out what happens in the hot laps i gotta see this [Music] [Music] so [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] so so matt your reaction from the lap time i'm pretty excited that's pretty cool that's that's that's a big car to take down and for this to be the first model year and the technically the base model of the c8 to be competing at a level like that not only compete but but taking down a lamborghini um it's it's shows how truly impressive this car is i have to agree with you this is a very impressive sports car without a doubt now in the lamborghini's defense though excuses already uh the brakes did start to die at about not even two laps into my hot laps so the data we recorded did show the potential lap time and lamborghini actually was quite a bit quicker than the corvette but unfortunately with the brakes dying so quickly you know you can't pull time out if you can't use the brakes so but that being said it still is a testament to the corvette this is what impressed me the most with the corvette i have to say at the end of the day i i did you know quite a few hot laps in the corvette we drove around all day for filming and you know what this thing was a champ and not at any point throughout the day did it show any signs of wear and tear brakes fading like nothing the car held up to everything we put it through and just smiled the whole while doing it and obviously put down an impressive time as well so whereas the lamborghini unfortunately did not that day and the win went to the corvette now the last thing i will say though which i know you're not gonna like this part but i gotta say it anyway we're trying to compare this to supercars in terms of performance we can see that this thing obviously can play with the big boys no problem but i still have to say at the end of the day i'm still not super convinced this is a super car yet but i will say for a performance sports car this thing is king of the hill in terms of sports cars i i offered this comparison i'm convinced bang for the buck this thing this thing is the way to go if you want performance and you're going to spend the money this is it right here and i think we proved it so i got to say again you know my hat goes off to you guys for designing this car and i can't wait to see what you guys have coming down the road so thank you so much for coming out today matt and sharing your insights with us and sharing your time we loved having you out and really look forward to having you out for some future episodes with some more great gm products thanks so much it's a lot of fun being here in conclusion we found out that the c8 stingray especially with the z51 performance package is pretty much the ultimate sports car on planet earth right now for what you pay and what you get there simply is no better value done but the big question is is it a supercar is corvette trying to attain that elite status well according to matt they're really focusing on performance and really trying to develop a world-class sports car no doubt about it they've accomplished that goal in my opinion however this is not a true supercar not yet i'm curious to see what's going to happen with the z06 and other performance models that one might change my mind but for today the corvette is definitely king of the hill when it comes to sports cars but not quite a supercar yet make sure you like and subscribe the video and you don't want to miss our next one where we're going to put up the camaro zl1 1le against the porsche fanboy favorite that came in gt4 we'll see you at the track [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] you
