2019/08/02 - Modern: Can Karn Still Compete in Modern?

good morning everybody we're gonna have a shorter ish stream today and we're basically gonna be playing some carne amulet I just keep getting questions about what does this mean for Karen amulets we off car now is was was car and just me etcetera etcetera and the reality is that while I do agree that carne is not the most powerful shell for amulet in the current modern metagame I do think that the deck is still quite powerful so I decided to play it through a league I continue testing filled up the dead you will see it here honestly I don't think I can make room for it in this sideboard and that is the lone reason why it's in the main deck last time what we did is we played only one explosives in the main and we were playing the coalition relic what I wanted to try this time was to do the opposite so to play field as the twenty-ninth land and then just have access to the second engineer explosives which is a very good card to have access to another alternative would be to take out the ballista from the main deck and play the coalition really instead so there's a couple of combinations to to try out but but yeah that's that's what we're gonna we're gonna try out right now and we're gonna see whether it's it's playable I guess I mean it kind of always is playable it's just like a matter of its does it win or not but yeah so we're gonna see how we fare against the modern metagame I'm particularly interested in try to figure out whether we can hang against against Kobach right like is basically the question that everybody is asking and that is that is why trinket mage I think it's the best shell right now because I think that it has the best plan against Oh God so we find a green source preferably a bounce land we find a balance and this is a turn theory Titan on the play or it turned three carne with basically inland okay I'm gonna keep this this hand is definitely on the greedy side right like there's there's no questions there but the fact that we are nice not convenient we found our green source we found our green source when I play Scout and as I was saying the best thing that we can draw here is about land now any bounce on do it no no it needs to be a green bounce in order for us to cast tighten but any bounce line will help us cast carne steering's of course of course also counts bingo so they should be pretty much game now this should be pretty much game over never didn't have it I am a powerful magician indeed that's clearly shown right here and so we're just going to swing we can't transmit four-pack so we can what we can do is we already have another tighten I mean it just we are so absolutely far ahead here I guess that we can we can pack for a Susa and cast carne I don't know what that achieves and then I'm gonna be stuck paying for my packed yeah I don't I don't think it's worth it so we're simply going to just like attack with our Titans and get Simic and t-west and that's it how we say helium youlet I strongly recommend you police it's it's just a matter of what do you want to do if you want to have fun you can get the second version if you want like most personally I enjoy the current version the most of all of them I do think that the trinket nation that trinket mage version is the best and now it's like Hume is definitely at least competitive the most competitive is definitely a trinket mage version okay so I'm I'm talking a little bit here I have different options I can just hold up negate I can play a Susan hold up negate the issue with this is that it takes the bounce line from my hand the good thing is if I draw any bounce and it represents a Titan next turn which I suspect that my problem might have their own Titan so I think I'm gonna go for that and unfortunately I cannot hold up negate and actually leave the bouncing in hand so yeah just like my my play from blaster and just really really punished me the good thing is that we know that they've like the four cars in the bottom of a deck are not bounce lands otherwise we would have picked that with the Buddhist earrings that we cast so yeah we're definitely negating this okay it's this will tell you the same thing I tell everyone it's weak about me it's just so much like cars like hundred yeah exactly yeah it's just like you once you get the shell you just move around with everything else you know it's gonna be escape shift go for the bigger alright so we are put dead now I'm going to preemptively play this the explosives on two because like this explosives it's only Chiellini damping sphere so I might as well do that and set that up for if my point happens to draw a lamp it's here but I think that like we are not a good place we're not even spot we don't have trinket match so you just named giant here I mean my opponent keeps whippin that's that's our out I guess for opponent to continue drawing blanks which they apparently are alright so we're gonna get to tighten the problem is if my opponent does find their prime son then we're gonna be in a lot of trouble so here we're gonna make a cool play right here I'm trying to set up to transmit to a pact of negation externus working what we're going to do is I still have one land drop left so now with the bounce land I am going to bounce Davis souvent gonna replay it as a semi growth chamber and then bounce the Tulare West and what this does is it tells me it basically helps me achieve that blue without needing to use my gemstone line this is the turn opponent if they find a threat here to kill me that will be that will be game for them but if they don't then I am going to lock it up that negate came in real clutching their counter and there's someone respect reclamation sage you got it that is not a threat so three to transmit one two three four five six so we can we can tighten as well play secretin I don't see why not well now it makes it even easier so do I have lethal six that's going to be 14 so it's not lethal so instead of hasting this Titan I am just going to transmute for practical negation and this should lock it up what is ye onto for a damn piece fear it's really the only reason why like I just don't have a better card right so the explosives is in there solely because of the dumping sphere and what I'm gonna do here is I'm gonna do I have the gemstone mine already so I'm gonna get double to Larry West and the reason to do this is so I can if my opponent does play a tamping sphere you don't need to I don't need to pact it but at this point this this game should be locked up this game should be very much locked up 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 so they have 8 land so I would die to escape shift so there's no real reason for me to to get this however scape shift might kill both of my dude so let's do this actually and this sets up it's this it's only one of my Titans need to be lethal next Ernest if my opponent finds a way to answer one of them the other ones gonna kill them anyway alright wanna know so let's start soli the start that was very lucky that my opponent only had a single thread and that thread was answerable for negate I ended up not being punished by my by my play I I do believe that it was a mistake like the my sequencing was bad but they didn't end up mattering because they just whipped four million turns and here this is a keep we are just missing just missing an amulet or another bounce land including the tsuba chancellor of the tangle we are super screwed we're probably gonna die on turn 1 maybe I don't think we can realistically beat this deck game 1 yeah it's just oh well yeah again the most annoying and frustrating part about this deck is that I can't really like I can't really scoop that's what the do what I know is to be the most like I my opponent can wave I am effectively I'm dead I can't beat this but there's like a very very very slight chance that day with or that I you know that I just beat them somehow and because of that well they love summer main deck that's aggressive maybe they really have trouble oh maybe it's because like one of their Wars my job is blue-eyed or something so they have like mainly hate against it or whatever interesting yeah there is I mean this this matchup is I mean just this deck it's just bullcrap like I really don't understand how they allow this to exist well effectively did on turn 1 can we win we just cannot be the aggressor Brent because that is that is the worst part even like goriias vengeance when they left they are left with nothing right I guess they can they're left with like a bunch of cards so they can so they can they can win on the next turn or something but here we actually like got nothing you don't even know what I'm bringing in Rex age 4 maybe they have something that I want to kill what could the I don't think Rex a Stephanie does anything actually so I guess I live in one carne I don't think that I want to bring both of this in because con fetching this is gonna be too slow so I'm just living Cardenas just the threat that can maybe win the game they stick so dumb though I am I'm I am kind of just over it at this point just like okay sure just take my money because that's basically what it feels like it's just like somebody is just just taking my lunch money or whatever alright just getting bullied here if I had a blue source I would keep this okay I'll keep this one but I'm in the salmon respect and if my opponent has to turn one again that is that's fine I just like they got me but I don't think I can take a turn off because it wouldn't be taking a turn off it would be taking do some stuff because right now they have 13 cards left so if if their wing con is in the bottom six cards that is my out and and again this is why this is why I can't really can see it because it's it's not deterministic right there's like a very very very small chance that I have that they just with like if they have it if their wing condition which i think is love man it's in the bottom six cards then i might have a shot because they can't like I can't like draw into it because they would deck themselves yeah yeah so I'm definitely I need to pass the grease around because it only gives them like seven cards to draw right the way that I did it my opponent has to find the answer beat fact of negation be it I don't know like another combo and they needed to find the answer in the top seven and they also needed to to find the answer in the top seven or and they need to not draw the girls around so those are my outs because if they actually draw the other girls around then I then I win right because that means they can't go off but yeah so they did this this matchup is just like a waste of both feet both persons time cuz it's just like I'm just here I'm not having a good time I am just you know just I'm just dying to this which I can't really do anything about on turn like turns one and turn three through interaction in game in Game two but I can't really consider like I would I would much rather be a deck that it's just deterministic the first time around and then when you know that you're dead you just concede and you you just get to move on with your life but now I'm just waiting for my opponent to go like look at this my opponent's been using already almost eight minutes of their clock and like my I did I basically had no decisions whatsoever it's just like do I pass this and that's all the decisions that I made what do when do I pass this that was those were the only decisions that I made so I don't know I just read and and you see what I'm saying and you see what I'm saying like they whiffed this is so upsetting I'm so upset that I just won this game I this is so upsetting like the fact that I just won this game irritates me so watch I hate this deck so much I hate this deck alright next anything I want to change and this is what I'm saying it's just I can't concede to this day because it's just when sometimes I know it's so dumb it's so so dumb like I just have to sit through all of this my opponent just used eight minutes of their of their time to lose the game they just went through a bunch of things and they just lost how is this fun how is how is this a thing that it's allowed to exist so frustrating and this is just like a terrible hand that has one piece of interaction for a game for like turn two so if I don't die on turns one and two I might have a shot but if I do then I'm going to die and I can't really moving in this cuz like the only better thing the only better thing that I can draw is exactly gemstone line and path to exile plus like six other cards so this is like the second best I can do and I need to keep this because I like this is just like the kind of magic that this incentivizes you to play it's so stupid like if I get killed here I just get killed here right like but it's just yeah and look I mean I am NOT gonna get to cast a spell here this is the only reason I mean I don't wanna say the only this is the main reason to run spell peers over negate like if if I had had spell peers here instead of negate then I might have had a better shot at in this game but it's the same thing I'm just gonna have six and I'm just gonna hang out here while my opponent does their thing for another you know five to seven minutes or something and I'm just gonna be sitting here hoping they whip because maybe they do cuz they just did so somehow this is what's happening also they packed it so they might die to their pod trigger if they don't win here this this is just this is just ridiculous I not understand how how this is allowed to exist in the format but hey stone formations take his van right stone for mystic is still banned so clearly clearly too overpowered for this for this game for this format just stupid you know what I think I'm not gonna bug them I think I'm going to priority prioritize setting up setting up another Titan for next turn so I'm gonna have 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 so I'm not gonna have enough to play explosives onto and kill the thing in the ice are you expecting to flip but I don't expect the Titan to die how does it happen session this is a really tough decision so we have the answer for this set up and ready to go so it's just a matter of which lands do I want to have it into play for next turn I think it's gonna be borders garrison and total area west I already play my line for turn and if I want to hast the title next turn it has to get the stronghold so I think I'd rather have access to the D West in hand to prevent fraying against the worst-case scenario this also is pretty good because it lets me like if my opponent spends Eastern to do something like I don't know like play Aria I can spend these turn to kill the Aria and then and then still have another potential explosives to get rid of the thing in the ice so that is also it's also a plus of making this play right here nothing to do here slide a hand unless my opponent goes like loading into double Phoenix or something where she should be winning this game we're gonna take seven of these thing in the ice but unless they manage to put multiple Phoenix's into the graveyard we're gonna we should be right there interesting that they went for the thought scour instead of the lining bolt they're going to for multiple trying to set up multiple Phoenix's but that is like that is not gonna be enough and this one and this one let's fill out this you'll feel like a wind more card so it is it has proven to be pretty good in some matchups so what the way that I see it what it does is it takes a close situation and it turns it into like a done deal if that makes sense like sometimes it will give you the out to certain lines against against some matchups where you just basically lock the game up like you take your opponent from having like one or two outs into in their deck to having zero and it just just just shuts the door basically which has been interesting so I just continue to test it because it feels like it has potential but I'm not sold on it like if I were to clear a tournament this weekend I don't I don't know if I would if I would play it if that makes sense right field feels like our monastery mentor yeah I mean that I guess that's the way to put it yeah I have to psych ward couple of cards out cyber one packed and I want to sight out one land it's probably gonna be the field of the dead actually I feel basically only chumps it only chomps thing in the ice and the colony is just better a champion thing in the ice you see champs it in the early turns rest a just gonna be able to have access to right there so I think that overall it's it's worth it to do it this way this is a very awkward hand but I think I'm gonna keep it like it has a ton of potential and a worst case scenario we get to like bug on one forests on to play play this on 2 and then we can crack it on turn 3 that's a nice choice for a basic Island gemstone man would be a great draw that is not a great draw so what are my potential draws and how do i sequence my lands here that's the Paducah ball entered the battlefield tapped mess me up I think it kind of does so I'm going to play it out here for no value because again it leaves me out to next turn play the forest if my opponent plays a thing in the ice here which apparently they do so unless I draw a gemstone mine here which would be awesome but I don't because I'm never lucky so now we have an out to kill in this next turn what do you think about possibly trying to fill either in the list from yesterday you could score this if you wanted to but like I don't see why we would want to go all in on the whole like I don't think I want to be going all in on the filter guardian aspect of the deck only this is a key aspect of the deck I mean please load with me here that's that's worse and then blood-money me I would play first next less it into place except that we are minimizing the turn to plays right like imagine if I had gone forest on turn 1 and I didn't have these explosives to blow this thing up next turn like they work then we're gonna be taking 14 for this from this yeah we were that so I I don't think that think that's worth it because we are kind of very far behind already so if Luis has exactly natural Letran into carne or it has to be in naturally drawn go scooter we're probably gonna lose to those carts anyway so I think that the boost in the boost in man eyes Faline worth it here so we're gonna go for it and I am very very aware of the risk right like I literally just said what the risk was but I think that it's it's worth it's worth running the risk since we die too since we die to it anyway you might as well play we filled up the debt here since we like to go squatter and stuff anyway figure out the whole back deck how is it possible that the play design has been playing with this card with with that card for months and they didn't figure out it really blows my mind yes it feels you can stop you can slow down Phoenix considerably we just like something like a single path of Exile or even fatal push like fatal pushes is a very reasonable card against Phoenix well it does nothing against hoga I just think the hog deck is it's a little bit too busted and yep so as you can see carne is still very powerful we still have a lot of matchups that are gonna be good for us but just do it match I'd be so much worse like our sideboard just doesn't really do enough and we are using a bunch of slots to play cards like micro sim lattice and like work online giant worm coil engine and stuff like that so yeah unfortunately unfortunately it's not the time to be playing card however I think as soon us whoever gets banned which is very likely to be I think I'm gonna try to I think I'm probably gonna go back to testing with carne and trying to figure out whether it's the the best thing to be doing yeah I mean there's a lot of things that make it busted right but there's like this car that you can only cast from your graveyard which is like and that would be this desert this is not it but okay there's like a gold re guy that you can only cast from your graveyard which is fine you know it's just it's just if it had that close maybe things would be better if you didn't have trample things would be much better if you didn't have if you'd had like del I don't know like main deck though it's it really helps even against like blue white and stuff blue white has like force of negation and whatnot so Karn is not particularly reliable and not very good to resolve so having access to the ballista in the main that you can transmute four against blue out and set up a lethal ballista it's very nice but maybe with field of dead we just don't need that angle anymore because we already have a very strong alternate wink on against blue eyed in the main deck so maybe this supposed iteration and we can do something like this the problem with this is that now I need to take out a card for my side War than I I I like all my cards in the side of course so yeah I think that I would have to be something like this yeah I don't know it's just it's just sad because I really want to play Karn but as long as Hokage still a dick I like can't really like if I if I went away and I can't really play this version of the deck which is sad anyway we're gonna have a this is
