[Music] if there is an automotive equivalent of the launch of a new iPhone Harry Potter books or whatever those kanye west trainers are then this is it it's the Tesla Model 3 and you've probably heard of it and that's because it feels like pretty much everyone's talking about it and lots of people want to buy it in fact even before a single panel was revealed on this car a hundred and seventeen thousand people had already put deposits down to buy one so after a bit of a delay we've got our chance to drive it here in the UK we've already driven it in Spain we're here to see just how good it is on our UK roads so to get the measure of it we have to put it up against its closest electric rival and that is the Jaguar ipace if you have a slightly bigger budget then this is the best electric car that you can buy now we do understand there's a price difference between these two cars but we need to put this against our premium benchmark in the electric car class to find out just how good it is so can the Model 3 live up to the hype that's what we're going to find out and remember please subscribe to our channel because we're going to be doing loads of new content coming up soon and if you want to buy a new car go to work on and look at our new car buying section because hopefully we can save you some money in the process [Music] let's start with the interiors and the model three now Tesla has always dealt in sleek minimalist interiors you can see that in the Model S and in the Model X but the model 3 takes that to the next level so there's hardly a button in sight in fact really the only button of any note in here is the hazard one which is up here so it's very sleek no buttons and the perceived quality of the interior so the quality of actually just looking at it what it looks like it's actually pretty good isn't it really I mean it's nice to look at and then when you get to it and actually poke and prod the materials here you can see it's pretty sturdy as well so it finally looks as though Tesla has kind of matched its look with its build quality and that's something that we've previously criticized in the past in fact this is the best interior that Tesla makes so you can see it's all centered around this absolutely enormous 15-inch the landscape orientated screen everything is controlled for that and I really mean everything so even if you want to adjust the steering wheel normally on most cars would be something down here to help do that on this you've got to go through the screen and then select that button and then you can use this rotary wheel on the steering wheel to adjust it which is a bit weird and maybe cool at first but annoying if you want to adjust it on the move same with the door mirrors they have to be controlled through the screen so that is a bit of a faff me but we'd better have physical buttons however if you own this car you're probably not going to be making that many regular adjustments to it the screen itself is massive razor sharp really great graphics extremely responsive as well but one slight criticism we would have is that the screen is huge but the shortcut buttons are a bit on the small side so it would be better if you could make these bigger because it would just make them easier to hit on the move especially the climate controls but normally on other infotainment systems we'd be saying that it's really a pain that it doesn't have physical shortcut buttons but a big compliment that we're paying to the Tesla system is that actually even though it doesn't have those physical buttons these still work very well another thing that we normally criticize infotainment systems for is if a missing apple carplay or Android auto we normally say if it doesn't have that then that's a real negative of the car however the model 3 doesn't have apple carplay or Android auto but this system is so good that you're unlikely to miss it really so that's for a number of reasons mainly we'd say because it uses Google Maps so you're not stuck with an ancient car sat-nav that always takes you straight through the center of town at rush hour you've got Google Maps and the connection to your phone is really good you can run your media off it you can make calls very easily so it's great to control through it the integration with your smart phone even without mirrorlink apple carplay or Android auto is brilliant now what about the storage and offer upfront in the model 3 well in the center console lift this up you've got a storage compartment thing here which if you remove there's some extra space underneath it as well then in front of that you've got these two cupholders and then hidden on here flick that open and there's another big storage compartment there and then lift this up you can see there's a big bit of storage under here and a couple of USB ports now a bit weirdly Tesla wants you to put your USB cable in feed it through this thing here pop this off and then fit it into the bottom here so that you can have a permanent fitting for your phone charging which seems a bit complicated when you could probably just fit in some wireless phone charging instead another point to make about these lids on the center console here is they open and close with magnets which is pretty neat but what it also means that you can't close it really hard so if you do you get a nice polite sign here saying closed console lid gently and if you close it gently take your time relax then it will close without a fuss however this does remind us that although we were praising the quality of the materials before the one thing that does kind of let it down is this gloss black finish on this car now you can see we've only had it for a few days but it's already got loads of fingerprints and a few marks and smudges on it so it means you'll probably have to carry around one of these and look I can't close it again some being too angry I'll try and relax it probably means you have to carry around one of these two just give it a wipe every now and then to try and keep it looking fresh there are also some magnets in the Sun Visor which I don't really understand but if you fold it down you can see it's made of these two magnets slab things but I mean I don't really understand why they've done that instead of just using another standard kind of apartment plastic thing for it but fair enough and this being says that there are other quirky features of course loaded into the infotainment system like you've got I mean you've got this fault thing where you can fart on demand and use this left steering scroll to just fart like that and you can also move it on to other seats and make it look like people are farting which if that's your kind of thing I suppose this is pretty funny and you can't really say there are any other manufacturers that do that as well so plenty of quirky features in here and generally very impressive interior the O pace does get apple carplay and android auto as standard and actually we'd say this is one of the best implementations of it in any infotainment system around the reason for that is when it loads up you have the whole of the top screen for one function and then below you have this other screen for the media or something else so it's good you still have a nice big view of the sat-nav and you can still control your podcasts or your music as well so that's really useful a really good thing that the Jaguar opus has however the problems start when you unplug your phone and you chuck the USB cable away because this system just isn't quite as good as the Tesla's so you can see if I'm just scrolling through these menus here it's nowhere near as sharp and responsive as the Tesla's is the Tesla one doesn't miss a beat but this is a little bit laggy and on the Tesla we were criticizing the small icons well on the Jag that even smaller however one good thing is that you've got physical shortcut buttons in the IPA so you've got a volume knob here you've got the climate controls too and then down here you've got the mode selector so when you're driving elsewhere in the interior the driving position is pretty good you get a good view of the road but you're noticeably higher than you are in the model 3 of course this is more of a higher riding SUV the model 3 is a lower slung saloon so which is better is probably going to be down to your preference and unlike the Tesla you have a more traditional way of adjusting the steering wheel and door mirrors but in the IPAs we would say that there's actually quite a lot of view of the dashboard so I feel like I'm staring a lot of the dashboard towards a nose of the car it's not such a problem though because visibility out the front is still good you've got fairly thick pillars but then the ones in the model 3 are pretty thick as well how the main problem the IPAs with the view out of the car is at the back so on the outside you can see it's got a nice sloping roofline but what that results in is a tiny rear windscreen and although the Evoque gets that fancy popping forwards and backwards digital reversing camera the old pace doesn't have that I wonder if we'll see that in here in the future but generally just like in the model 3 this interior is pretty nice too look at the metal effect on the dashboard is nice and so is the gloss black finish this is definitely the best interior we've seen from Jaguar and it's also the best interior we've seen from Tesla but the Jaguar just edges the model 3/4 build quality and on the dashboard it's relatively robust and nicely put together but just like in the model 3 there are still some areas that feel a bit weak and in fact I could probably rip that off I wanted to because I'm hunched obviously storage on offer is decent although not quite as good as the model 3 so lift this up and you've got a decent amount of storage down here these two cupholders you can lift that whole thing out and make the space even bigger and then in front of that you've got room for a pencil or maybe the car key and then here is where you can put your phone and your wallet and also a couple of USB ports either side rear seat space is impressive in both cars so you can see in the model 3 plenty of legroom loads of headroom too even with this panoramic roof fitted which comes to standard on all models threes but on main criticism in the back of the Tesla is that the floor itself is quite high and the seat relatively low so it means that if you're especially tall then your knees are gonna be sacked quite high and that could be quite uncomfortable on long journeys the back of the eyepiece offers a little bit more room than you get in the model 3 so there's a little bit more legroom more Headroom - and it's also wider but it's not huge margins the more noticeable thing is the lower floor so you have a more natural sitting position however in the eyepiece there is this hump in the floor which means if you're sat in the middle seat you'll probably have to find somewhere else for your feet now the boots the ipace gets an electric tailgate as standard but on the model 3 you can't get one even as an option which is a bit of an annoyance now in our what car group test we use carry-on sized suitcases like this to measure just how practical a car is so we take several maybe a dozen so of these and try and stuff them into the boots too it's a number of how many they can fit and then that gives us quite a good indication of how practical a car is so in the model 3 we managed to get 10 of these in the whole car which is a massive number we used to this in Tesla's because all their other products have been very cleverly and practically packaged so the model 3 is no different how'd it get Tennant well you can see it's got a really deep wide load bay that is very useful and practical also very good on the floor storage here so enough room for the charging cables or you can fit a couple of these in just in the underfloor storage bit at the front the front trunk is a good size it's not just a token gesture at the front of the car you can get an entire suitcase in there which is very useful so in the ipace we actually only managed to fit seven of these suitcases in ten in the model 3 7 in the ipace so surely that makes the model 3 the more practical car you might be thinking however that's not the full story so let's look at the boot over here you can see similarly wide not quite as deep doesn't go quite as far back the underfloor storage in the ipace is only really enough for the charging cables and not much else as you can see and the front trunk is particularly disappointing so it's tiny what are you gonna fit in there some loose change or maybe some receipts but that's about it however the eyepiece does claw back some practicality points because of the boot opening itself so you can see it's much taller than this kind of squat saloon shape that you get in the model 3 what does that mean in practicality terms well it means that putting these pretty small carry-on sized suitcases into the model 3 isn't a problem however if you have bigger bulkier items then it's going to be much easier to squeeze them into the oil pace so really whichever one is more practical kind of depends on your circumstance but how expensive of these cars and how do the numbers compare these the key things you need to know about buying and owning a Tesla Model 3 and a Jaguar ipace well as a private cash buy the model 3 is significantly cheaper over three years a range topping model 3 performance equipped with the performance upgrade pack for 3700 pounds undercuts the entry-level eye pace by almost 8000 pounds but that isn't the whole story the eye pace is only marginally more expensive as a company car and there's nothing to separate the two on contract higher while on a PCP Finance deal the eye pace is cheaper than the model 3 by around 20 pounds per month not what you'd expect considering the difference in list price the model 3 will also cost more to service its two jaguars credit the eye pace gets so much kit as standard keyless entry dual zone climate control heated wind screens and a heated steering wheel all come as standard along with a non adaptive cruise control and lane keep assist the model 3 gets adaptive cruise control with steer assist which Tesla calls autopilot Tesla's full self-driving capability is a costly five thousand seven hundred pounds but it will automatically navigate you through motorway routes including overtaking slower cars and allows you to move the car remotely from your phone at low speeds a feature Tesla calls summon later this year Tesla says it will also be able to recognize and respond to traffic lights which will enable assisted driving on city streets in contrast the eyepieces standard driver assistant technology is limited to the self parking function lane keeping assistance and conventional cruise control both cars are incredibly safe scoring the full 5 stars from Euro and caps safety tests however in the individual sections the model 3 outscored the eye pace across the board plus the model 3 gets a sentry mode that uses the cars cameras to record breaking attempts or collisions when it's parked and then saves them onto a USB stick now for the bad bit we are dealing with two of the most unreliable manufacturers around in our latest reliability survey Jaguar was a lowly 28th place out of 31 manufacturers while Tesla propped up the bot of the table but we have no data specifically on these two cars because they are so new we do know their respective warranties though and they should give some confidence to prospective buyers the model three is covered by a four year 50,000 mile warranty while the ipace gets only three years but unlimited mileage the I paces battery and drive unit gets an eight year or 100,000 mile warranty while the model three gets the same eight years but a hundred and twenty thousand miles both include a pledge that the batteries will retain a minimum seventy percent of its charge capacity during that period now the first thing to mention before we actually start driving the model three is this key card that you get with it so test of being cool and different and not giving you a key but give you a card to use the car instead so to get in you just have to touch it on the B pillar over there and that lets you in which is fine but the one really really SuperDuper annoying thing with this is that to start the car you have to put it on this exact spot just behind the cupholders here and then you put your foot on the brake and select drive and it will go for you but if the key is anywhere else then the car won't start so that's really quite annoying especially because Tesla hasn't given you a kind of catch or a pocket to store the card so if you put it there drive the first corner that you hit is going to be sliding off this gloss black finish surface and the card will be lost forever probably somewhere in the interior but the solution to this comes in the shape of a smartphone because Tesla happily provides an app which can become the key and in this app you can control a number of other functions with the car and actually it's really good really useful very interesting connected way to be using the key and functions of the car it's really impressive Jaguar also offers another app to control similar functions on the ipace but it doesn't look quite as nice the graphics look a bit dated and it doesn't control the same number as functions that you can on the Tesla anyway that's starting the thing out of the way so when you eventually do get on the road the very first thing to mention is just how quick it is because this is seriously rapid car so unfortunately we've done our performance testing in this a glorious British summer that we're having in a minute but even still in the soaking wet the model three did nought to 60 miles per hour in 3.7 seconds which is just insane and I did naught to 100 in 9.3 seconds which is just incredible supercar levels and performance and if you believe what tears I say then there's even more to come from the model 3 in terms of those performance times but it's not just about its straight line performance because when you do meet a corner the levels of grip are also absolutely incredible so this is on very very sticky Michelin Pilot Sport 4s is but even still the outright grip is incredible it gives you loads of confidence going into a corner and driving this thing quickly I mean really it's pretty much effortless now the steering it's it's not a negative of the car but it's also not its strongest point so it kind of feels a bit like a playstation wheel or something you know so it's nicely weighted and it is really precise but it's just a great feeling it really is this it doesn't necessarily make it a real joy to drive like if you've got enough 911 or something like that but still it's very very precise and impressive now there are a few different modes you can put it in we stick with standard because if you put it in the sport modes and the steering becomes really heavy and quite unnatural it's also got brilliant body control so when you do thread it through some corners you're not flung around the interior at all it's really flat stays really well controlled and it's just very impressive this definitely does Drive like a real low slung sporty saloon which it is okay so let's calm down a little bit and talk more about the ride of the model 3 because that's the interesting thing in this test we've got it in the UK for the first time so what's it like well when you first pull away it does feel a bit far so at low speeds and around town it doesn't crash it doesn't really thud but the road imperfections are picked up on and it can feel a little harsh at low speeds but it doesn't become uncomfortable and this is the performance model with a performance upgrade pack on it as well which brings a lower suspension so the benefit of having that lower suspension means that you can corner flatter but also at higher speeds it means that this car is incredibly well controlled so it might be a little bit fidgety and a little bit harsh at low speeds but when you're up at a motorway cruise it is incredibly flat and it's only really upset by bigger road imperfections so it's kind of smooth and then a bit of a jolt and then smooth and a bit of a jolt but everything that happens to the car all the movements are so well controlled so really this is a brilliant motorway cruiser which is surprising really when you consider the performance that's on offer in this car which is incredible so normally you'd expect well they'll be a compromise won't they're the ride short it can't be that good but this even in fairly big wheels with the lowered suspension it's really comfortable on UK roads so we're in the eyepiece now and you can feel at the first corner that it's just a bit more nervous in a bit twitchit and then the model 3 now that's not a huge surprise because after all we're comparing a low slung sporty saloon with a higher riding SUV so the fact that the model 3 goes around a corner better is no great surprise really but the steering is a bit of a weak point in the iPass and the model 3 does it better so the problem at the eyepiece is that it's got quite aggressive self centering so as you wind the lock on when you release it it snaps back to the middle so it just means that it feels quite artificial really and it doesn't give you huge confidence when you're turning into a corner at speed neither does the grip levels necessarily because in the model 3 they're just so high but in the IPAs they're much lower but the eyepiece is steering and handling is still very impressive compared with other electric cars like the Audi e-tron and Mercedes EQ see what isn't quite so impressive on the IPAs in fact probably the single worst thing about the driving experience is the brake pedal it's common in electric and hybrid cars that the brake pedals are a bit odd feeling but the ipace really is not very good at all so let me explain the problem with it when you want to use it you put your foot on it and there is a huge amount of travel in the pedal before anything at all happens and it's only right at the bottom of the travel of the pedal where you can't eventually bring the car to a stop so it just means it's quite difficult to bring it smoothly to a stop to judge the stopping distances as well we've also tested these cars again in soaking wet weather and we slam the brakes on at 80 miles an hour down to zero at our testing facility in Millbrook and the model threes brakes brought it to a stop sooner again no great surprise because it's not as heavy as the own pace so the body control isn't anywhere near as stable as it is in the model three of us you can see going through these corners relatively quickly you are kind of more thrown around the interior than you are on the model three although these sport seats in the IPAs do a pretty good job of hanging you in there but still you can feel the car doesn't manage its weight transitions quite so precisely and cleanly as the model 3 does so the eye patient model 3 ride well but in different ways so at lower speeds the eye pace feels a bit softer and it's actually more comfortable around town but when you crank up the speed in both cars there's an interesting difference so the model 3 is incredibly flat but in the eye pace you can feel it moving around a little bit more and actually that moving is a kind of constant shimmy in its chassis and the bigger imperfections on the road that you can see it deals with really well in fact possibly better than the model 3 does but it just means that there's a constant jitter to the ride it's not hugely intrusive but you can't always notice it kind of shifting its weight a little bit it's worth pointing out that our ipace was on adaptive suspension and 20-inch wheels we know that 18 inch wheels and passive suspension give it a better ride as for the range well in our real range test which you can read more about by clicking on the link in the top right hand corner of the screen the ipace managed a whopping 253 miles on a full charge and that's in real-world conditions the model 3 well there's a lot of hype around it and on the WL TP test it recorded 329 miles but in our real range test it recorded a result of 239 miles significantly less than the W LTP figure but still among the very best in electric car real-world Rangers now we know lots of people will be commenting saying that they've got way more range out of their model three but our real range number is calculated driving gently and not unrealistically slowly with an exterior temperature between ten to fifteen degrees centigrade and the aircon on over a mixture of roads it's as realistic as we can possibly be and we test all of our electric cars in the same way the test also shows that the model three uses less energy than the ipace around nine percent less electricity per mile and our test also showed that the model threes battery is around 13 kilowatt hours smaller which is partly why it's 14 miles behind on maximum range bear in mind odd model 3 also had the performance upgrade which gives it stickier wheels and alloys that aren't as aerodynamic as the others in Tesla's lineup according to the manufacturer that could affect its range as for charging the model 3 gets access to Tesla's network of CCS equipped superchargers which can charge the battery from 10 to 80 percent in just half an hour drivers can also use any public CCS rapid charger but Tesla doesn't provide an estimate of how long it will take to charge a rate of 50 kilowatts in the AI pace and naught to 80% charge from a public charger takes an hour and a half Tesla is also promising to add the ability for the Model 3 to charge at a class-leading rate of 200 kilowatts via a software update Ayana t began the rollout of its 350 kilowatt charging stations earlier this year while BP chargemaster has begun installing 150 kilowatt points the AI pace on the other hand can accept a maximum of just 100 kilowatts so to summarize believe the hype the Tesla Model 3 is every bit as good as if everyone with the deposit is probably hoping that it is take nothing away from the AI pace is still an excellent electric car with a brilliant real-world range but the Model 3 the performance on offer the ride comfort and the practicality all for this price is an incredible achievement for the manual and it is our favorite premium electric car for much more on the model 3 go to work or calm because there you can read our extended written review of it and every other electric car on sale and remember if you want to buy a new car then we can save you some money in the process - hopefully if you want to find out
