[Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] in his day two of the 2019 rogue invitational here in columbus ohio and four events will decide which man woman and team earned the coveted invites to the 2019 Reebok CrossFit Games thanks for being with us here today everybody I'm Sean woodland with Bill grunther Rory mckernon is down on the field we'll hear from him in a second but bill day one there were a lot of memorable moments a lot of stuff to take in but what stood out to you the most there were three big things that legends event with the Amanda was gigantic that was a CrossFit history lesson in the making but then on the men and women's side Chandler Smith hasn't made it into the games yet he's sitting in fourth place on Amazing Race there and then the women's battled to make to the games two points separates Gary Baynes from it's a battle it's amazing it is a busy Sunday here at rogue fitness headquarters for events for the individuals for events for the teams and we have two events for the legends and the teams will be kicking off acts and they will take on the c2 medley and the max front squat back-to-back events getting started here in just a second and on the team side of things it is CrossFit OC three not only are they the overall leaders but they are the team that right now would get that invite to the 2019 Reebok CrossFit Games this is a very experienced group and that to serve them well today well experience coming into this which is made but now experience and momentum they had those two wins yesterday looked very powerful and the fact that they're beating mayhem in second day that's a lot of confidence it's great for them here are the standings after three events across at oc3 with 280 out of a possible 300 points from yesterday they have a what the eight-point lead on cross at mayhem freedom for the event win but most importantly they have a fifty two point lead over cross at Invictus back--we one of the other teams and is trying to earn an invite dear from the rogue Invitational to the CrossFit Games the c2 medley is up first for the team's a whole lot of work on three implements the biker the rower and the skier and they caught the c2 medley couple reasons one that's all c2 equipment but two we have 200 calories that have to be done in each one of those pieces of equipment this is gonna be a painful but very strategic event for these that for these teams and you mentioned it strategy will come into play here and for more on that let's send it down to the field in Rory mcurtin bill Shauna had an opportunity to speak to our top three teams 200 calories on each of these three implements but you have four team members and all three of those teams taking fairly different approaches now you've got your top team in the in the field overall oc3 they're choosing to do short sprints with lots of change over now as you know in team competition changeover is where you can lose a lot of time on the other hand mayhem freedom and CrossFit Invictus back they have selected specific members to work together who will then go and tap out the other members on the implements that they know take the longest so more than ever we get to see how that strategy will play out in this event thank you row here are your lane assignments for this opening event of the second day of competition at the 2019 rogue Invitational oc3 they are your overall leaders coming into this event they will be right in the middle of a field in Lane five and they will be right next to the team that is trying to chase them down as far as that invite his concern that's Invictus back Bay I noticed e3 these guys that like we said have a lot of experience and I like the fact that they're gonna go aggressive at this particular event I want to see and I think that will be a good comment or a good play for them I'll sue the hell place Evette four of seven the c2 medley is underway 600 total calories on three of them it's three athletes work at a time and one is resting so you know you have one person resting in and I think of the three the one that they really need to be paying attention to is the bike now all is all three of these implements have a rest base on the skier you can rest when you're coming up on the road you can rest when you're coming back in on the bike you can never rest so that the bike is gonna be the burner I think they really need to understand that peace also drop and move all of these teams have decided that they want to work to a certain amount of work if that athlete starts to drop down they need to announce that and make that switch and make that switch as fast as they can taylor williamson is starting off on the bike ERG for oc3 and it is don't stop I think you can see in the bottom right of your screen leading the race right now followed by Invictus back fade team ROM WOD sits in third mayhem independence is fourth OC three is back in fit so Invictus back-pay the key for them today is they have to start beating OC three in some events if they want to make up that fifty two point deficit either Christabel bottom of your screen on the skier for CrossFit four one seven they are currently in sixth place overall 96 points back Sean when I'm looking across the field on that wide shot I mean we see a lot of these athletes they're very comfortable in the rower they know exactly how hard to push they know what it does to their body same thing with the skier but I I'm gonna say that I don't think as many of these athletes spent time or have had time on the concept tube bike with that bike we talked about not having a lot of revs but if I'm watching these athletes on the bike I don't see them pushing the bike very hard you can see Taylor Williamson they're pushing very hard on the skier but you look at the athletes in the back there we're relaxing a little bit more on that bike I think that that's gonna be the part that separates the team and they really need to push that bike a little bit a little bit more stasia percentage she's down on the bike for across it they have freedom as China Cho looks on send it back down to Rory mckernon Seana bill and to Bill's point about the speed on these machines these athletes especially CrossFit Invictus Back Bay and mayhem freedom in particular had opportunities to practice this they know the exact average wattage that they want to hold on every single machine in order to finish so CrossFit in back Invictus back bay in particular they said they wanted to hold about 1,900 on that bike and that means that they reckon they'll be done with this portion of the event in about six minutes Thank You row that's a look at don't stop Jen Smith on the skeered told amaura Kenya right now on the rower for Invictus Back Bay and right now they are in the lead ahead of don't stop cross it mayhem independence is now in third as Invictus Back Bay and don't stop for trading the lead basically on the same pace victus back bay don't stop crossword mayhem independence that's big for them as well if they can stay towards the top because mayhem independence 94 points back kelsey keel crossing invictus back bay so we talked about communication and I think that third person that resting person has to know either one where they're gonna slot in if they're gonna do kind of a conga line you know movement from one implement to the next implement but they have to have a lot of communication I did see don't stop was looking around and see some of the other teams are looking around but they want to keep that wattage on whatever influence we're talking about whether it's key whether it's a bike whether it's rope keep that fan moving so you don't have to do a whole lot of work to get it moving and then you can just keep on jumping just keep that wheel spinning and Invictus back bay has gotten better as a competition has gone on they're coming off that big win in event three last night as Meg Reardon hands out to Craig Kenny on the skier again it's Kelsey keel who is on the biker in more keno in the back staying on the rower don't stop an Invictus back bay fighting for the lead it's mayhem independence in 3rd and OC 3 they are locked in a battle with Cross of mayhem freedom for 4th right now rich Froning on the skier two straight second-place finishes to start the day yesterday then they dropped the fourth an event number three and that put them in second place overall coming into the day rich looks very relaxed we talk about the recovery portion on two of the three implements here and you can see as he stands up that's where he takes his nice big breath trying to get that recovery and into a nice big pool so far the majority of the switching has taken place on the bike ERG and on the skier one maples painful of the three but then the most use there's a rower in every single CrossFit gym but not every athlete has had as much time on the ski or the bike let's go back down to Rory mckernon yeah a great look guys if you check out what we've got with our top three and the overall standings especially mayhem freedom dray Strom and rich Froning jr. have not moved the women are the only two who are transitioning back and forth there on the bike versus oc3 the next lane over where you have all three members working almost conga line style and switching each other out Invictus back bay does have two members on one machine that's the skier but as opposed to they're two female athletes they've chosen two of their strongest athletes best Craig Kinney and Meg Reardon they're trying to tick away at that before they go and tap out told him we're at Eno and Kelsey keel Thank You row meanwhile don't stop is starting to put some distance between themselves and CrossFit mayhem independence but still this would be a great result for CrossFit mayhem independence if they can finish inside the top three Invictus back bay is also up there and the two of them are ahead right now of OC three that this holds they will chew into that lead that oc3 came in with to the day OC three with 280 points to put them atop the overall leaderboard frosted Invictus back-pay started 52 points back mayhem independence 94 points back mayhem freedom has now moved into third place ahead of CrossFit Invictus Back Bay Ocean 3 sitting solidly and fifth Travis Williams on the bike ERG don't stop team they are your leaders Alexis Johnson coming over to see how he's doing and it's Jen Smith who was on the rower a little more a keener I'm pardon me yes in all three of these guys have been on their implement a long time Travis you've been on that bike a while I think what they're doing here is they're just trying to see hey how are you feeling how you feeling how you feeling wow that was a swap right from the bike down to the row you saw it back there with Jen Smith in in Travis don't stop still in the lead but crosses mayhem freedom is chewing into that mayhem Independence's in third and Craig Kenny on the bike ERG for a cross at Invictus back made they are in fourth place now oc3 has just jumped ahead of Invictus back Bay Kenny's off the bike meg Reardon hops on and Tullamore aquino in the back is still on the rower remember after this we have a very quick reset and then we go right into the next event which is the one rep max front squad don't stop Jen Smith is off the bike as they are done Travis will ain't done on the rower and it looks like don't stop might be completely finished and they are across at oc3 meanwhile putting on a charge so oc3 across the finish line and they are going to take the event with a late charge don't stop it's going to finish in seconds and here comes Invictus back Bay so that is huge for OC 3 mayhem independence and mayhem freedom both coming across the finish line OC 3 hanging in fifth place until the very end they make a late charge and win the sprint to the finish and they will increase their overall lead as they have now won three of the four events we have contested this weekend so you talked about the strategy and which one is gonna work we do know that if you can keep the calorie in the wattage up high that's always gonna be something positive which it looked like it worked there but we were watching on that little diagram where everyone was moving I didn't even see them in the play so the fact that they were able to jump up that fast that kind of blows my mind but it does it does pay to the right strategy of keep the fan wheel moving keep that wattage up high push it hard take your short break push it hard take your short break still have some teams left on the floor cross at 4 1 7 is still out there but that's CrossFit OSE 3 we mentioned when we came on air look this is a very experienced team they have all been to the games who are on the podium last year Colin Carr Tia's their coach he knows what he's doing they had a plan going in they executed it and it paid off if about a minute until a time cap and then it's a 5-minute reset and then the combined 1 rep max front squad event every team will have two platforms one for the men and one for the women you're seeing those coming to your view on the left side and they will do their one rep try to find their one rep max front squat and then we will add up the top lip for each athlete and that will be the team score lots of plates down there so we have an 8 minute time Chapel more when we're in that particular segment it'll be a 5 minute break in between so if you did so for OC 3 they finished first they're gonna actually get a little bit more resting to be a winner yeah it does pay to be a winner unless you push too hard then you can blow your legs out but I think those these guys are good enough athletes they're gonna be really be able to recover enough to live some big weights but you have to figure you want to lift as much as you can couple rules to that though can't drop the weight or if you drop the weight let's skip that one off and you can't go down so you have to build yourself up as you're moving what's going that platform that is a time cap and a cross with OC 3 and the rest of the teams here and the rogue Invitational will rest up and get set for the next event the 1 rep max front squad so it was hard to find out or figure out what was gonna be the best strategy the fact that there were three different strategies on the floor was pretty impressive least we saw that don't stop was doing we saw what Back Bay was doing some really fast switches you can saw when mayhem freedom decided to keep everyone on one implement and just kind of cycle the women back and forth looks like it was gonna pay off they were really starting to leave or move their way up to the front but you don't stop making their switch keeping that communication high but again when you go back to OC 3 using the strategy of we're gonna go short first our big burst short res big burst short rest that allows them Express at the end part once they have those last calories done to make for the finish but wow what a good strong charge in today to the late push pays off before OC 3 and here are your final results they be done stop by three seconds rack up their third win of the weekend send it back down to Roy mcurtin who's with your event winners all right here we are again team OC 3 a third event win now we talked before the event and your told me you're gonna do lots of transitions that was the strategy but give me give me the overall view of the strategy coming into the event well Taylor and I do well on machines overall so we thought it would be best if we could all switch a lot and we could put a lot of power output into the short-duration anything that you guys would change going back probably not or what changed on the fly in terms of strategy um just communicating about which machine was behind or if we were gonna finish something first and kind of changing the order a little bit we got the front squats next what do we what are we expecting to hit some big lifts all of us keep it general I reckon okay good luck OC 3 CrossFit OC 3 with their third event win of the weekend and they are solidly in the driver's seat as they look to make a return trip yet again to the CrossFit Games the next event the Mac's front squat 8 minutes only one athlete can work at a time and strategy comes into play here's you don't wanna spend a lot of time switching weights on and off now these guys are gonna know about what numbers they want to hit and I think that's important because they want to make sure that they do hit it you don't want to go retro retro retro I think we're probably going to see a max of about three lifts or so per person and it's gonna be what can they hit in those three lifts here's where teams will line up on their platforms once again oc3 will be right in the middle in number five on those number five platforms since we will have two for each team and they will be keeping an eye on a victus back bait and CrossFit mayhem independence the two teams behind them in the standings coming into the day as OC three is really putting that invite to the CrossFit Games on lock and invictus back Bay though they have some athletes who can really put up some big weight you know they have a lot of power I mean Kelsey is very strong we already know Meg Reardon can do the Craig Kinney and that powerful mustache you know who's gonna be putting up some big waves with that I think they need to do this they need to they need to get themselves a good score so they can start moving themselves up closer to OC three to get that shot in there again I don't know if it's gonna be enough but it's something they have to do they have to be successful one of the best moments came yesterday courtesy of CrossFit balance they've had to basically withdraw from the competition because one of their athletes got injured but they are still competing and for more on that let's go back down to Roy McCarty that's right Shawn Kaitlyn Mead is the new hero of the CrossFit community last night she was surprised when her husband drove all the way from Washington DC and she told me about this warming up for the event she had a huge smile on her face and she said she was really happy to see him but she sure wishes that he would have brought her lifting shoes Oh hopefully she can power through as oc3 talks through their strategy overall leaders now after four events you know the confidence that builds when not not only that you're beating someone like you know we're throwing a junior in the mayhem freedom group but you've had three wins now you're in a very successful position that's when that's when really big numbers start to go up that's when you I mean to lift big weights you have to be very confident and they have a lot of confidence right now so I think they are in a great position to do some more damage on the rest of the field CrossFit mayhem cheering section is here in full force we are underway taser percentage in China Cho loading their bar drei Strom and rich Froning pairing up on their platform for profit mayhem freedom these athletes we they know they have a short amount of time so they need to make their reps or their attempts count the way they'll do that as they're gonna look at probably about an 80-something they're gonna hit about 80% of the time about 95 percent of their one run max and then go for something big after that before they even get on the platform though they should know pre plan what they needed so that's what it's gonna be make it count no they're pre plan and then execute once they get out on the floor that's Kaitlyn Meade hits her left go over to cross at OC 3 and Luke Shaefer with 225 pounds on the bar no problem again it is the total of your four heaviest lips made Reardon Kelsey keel for back pay and a Jared Stephens racking his weight as Tyler Christopher will take over cross at four one seven we're talking about what back baby needs to do and you need to have your big heavy hitters out there get someone like Craig Kenny 275 makes it looks like it's 75 but again that's the first lift get that first one under the belt then you get up close about 95 100% of your one rep max and then you go for something you kind of swing for the fence totem or Kenya will be up next and you will hit that easily both those guys could have gone way heavier mmm I mean take a safe one that my goodness they made it look so easy rich Froning is loaded 315 pounds on the bar rich hits that with little trouble now 315 for the pair of tall americano and Craig Kenny for Invictus back BAE [Music] Craig Kenny when he was in high school he was a quite an accomplished football player in the Train he used to push a car up a hill that was his training just old-school brute strength stuff that's the neighbors used to say to his parents you know your kids out there pushing your car up the hill he was quite an athlete playing high school football Jarrod Stephens four four one seven left side it's his life that was a 355 pound it's the biggest lift I've seen out there on the floor yet Christopher 345 pounds on the bar for Dre Strom now 335 the Craig candy and Invictus backbag shabby total mauritania when I'll step up to that Meg Reardon and Kelsey keel for Invictus Back Bay loading their barbell we'll hit that we're halfway through the eight-minute window [Music] 4:15 on the bar now for Jared Stephens and Tyler Christopher crops at 4 1 7 365 meanwhile for Trey Strom and cross it mayhem freedom 4:15 for Jared Stephens across at 4 1 7 and that goes up easily nice lift and now Tyler Christopher will make a run at this that's 355 for Joe purse ante for cross at OC 3 weight can only be added to the bar 390 is good for rich froning's they cannot strip weight off if they miss a heavy lift once you get to a point can't go back Boulevard Aquino just hit 355 and now it's work they enter in this work 275 pounds for cross at OC 3 Wow Wow OC 3 Andrea nesler hits that easily and I'll Taylor Williams from the step by Williamson will help that now trace from the 390 pounds for president mayhem freedom the big numbers starting to roll in it as we are inside 2 minutes to go here in this 8 minute window in the fifth event of the team competition just 2 more remain after this and right now it's OC 3 who are your overall leaders says now the four hundreds are starting to roll in rich Froning and race drop putting 405 on the bar [Music] Toula moeraki neo hit 385 right behind rich and floated cannot get now they got to unload the bar and get it back up there so 405 no good so this is going to take a lot of time andrea Missler at 280 pounds just can't get that but both the OC three women did successfully lift 275 pounds taser percentage with 265 435 pounds now for Jared Stephens across at 401 7 [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] thirty Seconds to go it's perfect as you can get that Tyler Christopher will make a run at it for thirty five the exes this would be huge for for 170 whoa Wow for 35 for both Stevens and krysta fell meanwhile Kelsey keel for back van 285 so four one seven with a late charge we'll have to see where this all plays out but it looks like they're gonna have a really good chance to win this event that was Kelsey keel Invictus back bay who made that lift at 4 1 7 courtesy of Jairus he was in Tyler Christopher they're gonna be right there in the mix once we start totaling all this stuff up as will Invictus back bay and we saw some impressive list from OC 3 during their time on the platform we'll wait for the totals to find out who actually wins this event but coming into this event across an oc-3 they were your overall leader's son I think initially what what you tend to look at it what the guys are lifting but this wasn't all about the guys it's a total you know it's the women's what are they putting up and what are the runnin wet and what are the men putting up OC 3 women big numbers on that floor look at that 275 pounds confident very smooth back pace same thing 285 this was the biggest slip that I saw with the ladies Kelsey Kiel made that look so easy on the guys that I was thinking okay maybe we'll get up in the upper three hundreds Jared Stevens put on 435 pounds and it isn't just a fact of him doing it but they both did it that was the message the Kristen Bell walked up to that bar and I'll give it a try buddy baby look as easy as Darren Stevens did let me just try that to you here come on the two big lifts from Jared Stevens then Tyler Christopher CrossFit for one seven let's send it down to Rory mckernon Winthrop's at four one seven all right I got I got team four one seven here we're talking about PRS where does this sit in the grand scheme of your lifting career perfect scenario for it but I hear there's probably way more in the tank even though that way it would take most of us through the floor I've hit 440 in training before so we just came out at numbers we both get hit we can move through so our girls can move through some numbers great so a fantastic event for you how are you guys feeling about the weekend overall so far it's been awesome that rogue Invitational is and I don't know just an awesome event and I feel like it's run really well it's super fun lots of great athletes here it's good great see you 401 seven congratulations [Applause] team four one seven with a really good shot of winning that event but we have to total up all the ways to find out what the final scores are but a good start for the day as the teams get after back-to-back events oc3 la charged at four one seven impressive and they're lifting we will have the individual biathlon coming up next [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] my name is rich Froning four-time CrossFit Games individual champion two-time affiliate Cup champion arm piece helped a ton with what time to eat how much to eat the quality of food I need to get in I wasn't eating enough wasn't getting in enough calories RPAs helps to actually show me that I need more food I need more carbohydrates I feel a lot better I feel stronger my goal is to be the best version of myself whether that's with my workout my friendships my mind or my nutrition I try to give my best of every area of my life every single day we all have something that we strive to be and I feel like it's not about where you are it's about how you get there levia live your best is presented by Reba Reeboks newest sport the unexpected campaign celebrates those who defy convention and challenge the status quo visit Reebok comm to shop the latest collection and by rogue strength and conditioning equipment that's built to last the individual competition getting set to kick off here on day two of the 2019 rogue Invitational in Columbus Ohio the women will be up first in the biathlon and here is where we stand at the halfway point it is Tiye to me who has the overall lead she has a 22 point cushion over Sarah Sigma's daughter who was impressive yesterday and ethos daughter sits in third and then Kristin holtam and Brooke wells rounding out the top five accuracy is one of the 10 that general skills and we are certainly going to test that in this event and in order to help us determine how that is best going to be done we have brought in an expert of our own this is Chad sambala a former US biathlon national team member and many of you may remember him as a guy who got you fired up when you were watching biathlon as part of the Winter Olympics last year Chad thanks so much for being here if the athletes doing this event and people at home watching this may not know a whole lot about biathlon what are some of the things that they just need to keep in mind as far as the basics are concerned to be successful in this event well I think these the athletes here are very different they're much more power at driven athletes so the power ratio as opposed to the trying to stay composed on the shooting range is the real key for these guys it's a new event for them so what they have to do is try to when they're on the shooting range you have to remember what they did when they hit those shots and be consistent every time they take the shot do the same breathing pattern do the same focus the other thing is is to stay in your own lane they've been practicing some of them have had success in the practice range but when they get together and they're shooting head-to-head for prizes in cash it's a big different thing as much different thing so they're gonna have to stay in there only and mentally to be successful and Bill you got to see some of these athletes get coached by some by athletes that was a couple days ago what did you take from that the main thing wasn't there there was a technique to shooting this type of rifle under this sort of circumstance if you did that and you feel funny doing it cuz I got to play with the two if you do it right you'll make the target if you don't it's all over the place so you gotta you gotta stay that technique let's send it down to Rory mckernon who is on the field with more on this event yeah thanks Sean you've got chat up there so I'm gonna put it into novice terms I got my hands on one of these rifles now in the Olympics they use a real 22 rifle they're actually at 50 meters we're now at 10 meters with this airgun but despite the fact that it's an air gun it actually has a lot of weight to it I got to chance with pill to take a cup shots myself in the practice range and the difficulties not going to come in the prone in my opinion in the standing portion it's going to be very difficult for these athletes when you get it away from your body it feels like you're on a boat the tip of this thing as you're trying to look down these old iron peep sights so the challenge I think for some of these athletes with no experience with with any kind of shooting are gonna be pretty difficult Thank You ro and here is the test at hand it is the fifth of eight scored events 15-minute time cap ski argh and then three different shooting rounds two standing one prone and I think that's gonna be the key that the standing or the the prone the lathe down is not a problem the standing will be a problem we ran I mean we played with it it's not even comparable it's totally different right I think I think for my skill set level the difficulty for these athletes new to the sport the the actual target and the rifle combination for these athletes it's relatively fair from the prone position but I think if you can hit 12 or 13 of the 15 targets you can win this competition but most importantly I think the X Factor is how many shots who gets the most standing and remember there is a penalty for missing as we take a look at the lane assignments keep an eye on lane number seven that's Rachel Garibay right now she is the athlete who would receive the invite from the sanction event to get to the CrossFit Games first of two heats is underway who will have four rounds of skiing and three rounds of shooting and then they will run back across the finish line it's crazy we are these guys have all played with this skier they understand that now granted it's not skiing and that's a plus right we don't have the ups and downs that you guys would have in a race so we're just gonna be kind of grabbing the handles and going for it but the question I would have is how hard do I push because I know that the second I grabbed that gun my parts gonna be raised on me breathing hard how're they supposed to compose themselves on that ski well I think that's the whole the whole question marker and I was like what does this event actually entail it's never been done so I think it's really important that you don't spike your effort too early get into the competition pace yourself for this first skier maybe not even be the first one off go in there hit five and then go back right to the ski or and try to get try to get the lead so you don't have to go to the penalty I think if you can avoid penalties in the first shooting stage then you can start picking up your effort sort of a negative split concept that is very common and endurance you don't wanna go in and gas it right and have a lot of lactic acid have your heart responding in a very negative way so you want to just kind of keep it under control make sure that you're composing completion region don't think about anything else don't think about anybody I'll stay in your lane here pinging all over the place and we mentioned the penalty those kettlebells that's part of the penalty for every shot you miss you have to run from your skier to the pylon you have to do three kettlebell thrusters then if you miss another shot you have to run back have your come back again and do three more for us or so it's one sprint and three thrusters for every shot you miss it's really hard for me to conceptualize because I'm an endurance guy I've never done a thruster then tried to shoot now you don't want to know and that's what I think is the other extract I don't in any of these addicts have done thrusters and then tried to shoot so right so you know if you can avoid the penalty obviously you don't do a thruster but I think we'll see some penalties and then the question is how wobbly are they gonna be and how shape you will they be from those dusters so Corinne strum is off and she is now shooting prone I'm Fargo Alvarez Katie Trombetta and Brooke hassel also there and in Lane two is Lauren Seaver I was watching Marco Alvarez she's having a lot of success in the warm-ups both from standing and prone drum starts with a Miss clusters and a run Zoomer starts with the hit on lean-to arena hit 1 on lane Jewish brothers hit her Alvarez with a with a hit on her first shot the question was ok I'm just gonna hit off all 5 then I'm gonna go do my run think that's what I know how to do well I talked to the folks who created the format make sure they tried to create a a penalty that was gonna be indicative of the effort and difficult to say you can't do that and succeeded if you knew everybody away on the physical part for five so she showed she hurt practice ring this morning she looked great I marked her as somebody who might have a lot of success with this competition now she's gonna go to the standing position also clean his Hoss so Brooke Haas and is getting a huge lead on the rest of the group now they just got a stage he'll see they've got a gap now everybody else is trying to catch back up and they can just chill out and stay relaxed on that skier Margot Alvarez in Brooke Haas they're your leaders right now in this first of two heats they are on their second of four skis the next round shooting will be standing and that's the one that has given people tons of problems this is this difficult is way less stable and the hardest part of this is you don't need a perfect sight picture they hit the target you just have a perfect trigger squeeze but the the nuance of the trigger squeeze is something that takes years and years to develop so that's why this different this is so difficult but I did see Margaux Alvarez shoot clean in her warm-ups on the shooting range from the standing one time and she afford the other time what she's shooting well and she has shown in her social media and other another platform like that that she is doing some practice with the shooting fils agape is another woman who was cleaned through her first shoot and she is back on the ski or the way does the score they will get one point for every ten calories they complete and then they get a rep counter for every target that they hit and then if you get a penalty you'll get a rep based on how many what about you complete as we watch Alvarez here on the screen one of the things I've been watching all week is the technique of the double pulling now this is another thing that has been perfected over decades and maybe even a century in cross-country skiing is the initiation on the double core motion a lot of athletes drop their butt back a little too early Marga Alvarez is doing a really good job of getting high starting high but getting your hips into it as well that initiation creates those Watts that you need to move them move the meter and make your calories so she's doing a great job it's really a matter of using your body getting best advantage use you know use your weight of your body examples rather than 20 arms or your core or just your quad so Alvarez is done and now she will go to her second round this one will be standing there are two prone rounds one standing Brooke Hass is there as well this is the big test this is where everybody's in their mind is challenged you can see that frustration in the training that the athletes that they had some had some success but Alvarez has bought as good as anybody I've seen in the standing position today Alvarez and Hassan there's tech arounds and algorithms would miss her first buddy else donut or just two athletes shooting Haase is yet to shoot horse misses again you can look at the technique difference you've got Haase with her elbow on the hip like a real winner by athlete Alvarez gets a hit there Alvar is shooting like she's own kind of the hunter style all you all say and that's the form Utah she's here elbow is on her hip and she creates that bone structure that supports the rifle and the weight Julie Albers or Marco Alvarez a shooting is fine but it gets harder and harder the more tired you get and you get that bone structure will the way Hoss is shooting Alberto so far has hit just one of five targets so right now she's looking at three penalty laps sorry take that big breath you plant cool everything out down calm the breathing calm the heart rate and calm the frustration it's not fun to have a mess one of the things I liked what I heard her say on the shooting range it is that she has to do it the same thing every time and I talked about that but she comes she said I have to come from the top down and try to catch the shot as I'm coming through it down and that's a really wise and the harder it gets the more you have to be confident that ability hit the target she's got to hit that's not terrible considering how long she's had to practice the sport Brooke Haas meanwhile has hit one of four her in schrum now in third place has missed her first shot Lauren Seaver also missed her first Rachel garibay as two hits everybody's doing great Haas has two hits I think at this point if you can hear to understand in the standing is pretty good so you can play with this year that I played with this the other day I was able to get one standing I wasn't breathing hard I was fine laying down I felt like I was on a boat when I was saying that slate was going all over the place it is a lot harder than it looks be clear the difference from what the winter athletes doing some athletes with these athletes of juniors were shooting from 50 meters from the prone position that to hit a target the size of a silver dollar from 50 meters but they have to hit the size of a DVD for standing so there's different size targets what we're seeing here today is the same target no matter what right and so it's much harder to hit the standard target the core target is actually very a very fair thing for these athletes to try to hit being beginners it's a great effort for Rachel garibay who hits two of five again she is the woman who right now would receive the invite the CrossFit Games from this event but she is locked in the tight battle with Corinne Shrum SBR Bay has just a two-point lead over Shrum in the standings as we take a look at fee saghafi who was clean in the prone position I'm struggling Stan went over five standing looking at the shooting scores got Shrum with three hits from better with three hits monterosso has three has one more shot to go and moderato hits four out of five so good for good shooting earlier she's good she should be well that's great if we talked about like okay if you look at the it's a total 15 shots if you get like what's gonna be probably a winning score you said if someone gets in that twelve range I think so yeah that's a massive score so I mean you get you're gonna do that well in the standing that's it's huge huge so moderato will make a huge choose way behind the rest of the group country understanding but hitting those four shots puts her right back in the competition she's not the last to hit the concept tube bird by any by any means still for three more athletes coming so Brooke Haas has taken over the lead from our goal Alvarez they're basically even as they are on their third of four skiers they have to complete 30 calories in the now they will go back to the rifle and do five more shots from the pro position than they will finish one final ski to sprint across the finish line still in the lead based on our graphics ten more calories remaining for Margot Alvarez her judges hand is in the air and for those of you maybe didn't catch the top of this event the voice you're hearing that you might not recognize belongs that Chadds Avila he's a former US national biathlon team member and he's the man who did all the great commentary for the Olympic coverage for biathlon last year at the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics we certainly appreciate you being here it's been great I've kind of been soaking up I'm a newbie to CrossFit it's been really fun to try to conceptualize what this event might mean to CrossFit and I think it's really really an interesting event it's different in the fact that I think it's a much more cerebral and mental challenge than perhaps the other events which are really quite brutal visited this is a physical event put that but it's it's a completely Turner Turner corner for these athletes as far as the the mental strategies well we really like CrossFit us pride themselves on you give me anything I'd not be able to do it and this I mean shot meanwhile and she's back to the prone position that she was a perfect five four five the first time she was here and now she's two for two as Brooke laughs who's in second place is on the right of your screen is on her third and final shoot we talked about that 12 shot opportunity was that 12 might do in Margaret Alvarez is three three she was clean prone had to hit standing Trump starts with a mess nobody else has taken a shot yet in shooting I did not think about it just take the shot and five for five about thirty more calories in a sprint across the finish line tomorrow Alvarez looking to set the early time to beat here in the first and two heats an event five the playoff lon the Haas meanwhile is staying clean hasta the chance here she has to get on the skier she's back about it looks like about 10 calories roughly from Margaret who's been on the concept to now arrghh for a buck in all 15-20 seconds ahead of her Margot Alvarez and Brooke Hass Hass is on the left Alvarez on the right this is your fight for first place right now in this heat Alvarez at 14:30 now 12 to 25 the calories for Haas great shooting performance by both these leaders in this first heat and then the interesting thing is how are they gonna hold up against the the next team well I think that put a lot of pressure on the final team I agree I fact if there they went unbroken like that the fact that it will get that many good shots off great shooting presentable alvarez's judges hand is in the air meaning she is in the final ten calories Brooke hostas judge has yet to put her hand in the air so Alvarez has the lead here 30 calories on the ERG and Alvarez is done and marvel Alvarez with an impressive effort in the opening heat and she will win her heat as she Sprint's across the finish line with some impressive skiing and some very impressive shooting 12 21.73 seconds unofficially you know I spent the whole morning watching the practice range and I was trying to watch the vibe who had the confidence and I had her in the background she spent a lot of time she was hitting a lot of shots and her confidence coming into this event look great and I think that really carried her through and she is a golfer so she's used to doing things to require a lot of accuracy not sure how much that plays in but she's very used to a very mechanical movement like a golf swing well I like golfing too and I have people asked him what's Python they're gonna imagine going playing par golf and you're not a poor girl from your on the hole going into a whole nine that's been in that position you know and honestly shooting is like a golf swing Brooke Haas meanwhile as finished she's in second it's like a golf swing once you get it once you get that rhythm you want to do the same thing over and over again and that's how you have success very similar sports mentally that is nickimja Durazo who was four for five standing to put herself in this position and she only has four points she's in dead last in the overall standings so if she finishes towards the top in this event she can really propel herself up the standings and possibly get into that battle for the invite from the rogue Invitational to the CrossFit Games yet just three misses as well from Entourage oh so she's a 12 12 415 shooter that was kind of the number wow that's amazing that's amazing that the fact that they were able to there was a lot of talk about this event and what am I gonna do shooting-wise the fact that some of these athletes already in this first heat coming out and showing so much prowess right out it's pretty impressive mata raza was in she'll take third in the heat and that is huge and Rachel Garibay right now is the woman who as that invite the CrossFit Games and she's getting set to finish up so that as close as she can finish the Maharaja as possible the fewer points she will see and it's really seem to like the shooting I was telling now Laura Horvath she says she's might buy one of these rifles feel our Corinne strum is across the finish line so she came into this event only two points back of that woman Rachel garibay as far as the invite spot is concerned so shrub may have just overtaken that from Rachel Garibay five seconds before we hit the time Kappa garibay did herself a favor by getting in inside of that mark and that is going to do it Colleen Lehane will get time capped as will a handful of other athletes but Margot Alvarez will take the heat and that is gonna be a tough score to beat she was impressive on that rifle yes she looked great I think her focus she figured out when I asked her I was asking several athletes what have you learned and one of things Margo who told me is that I learned I have to do the same thing over and over again and focus on my breathing and she clearly did it I think she I think she's probably gonna be a little bit disappointed with her standing shooting based on what she was doing in Wallis put the rest it was great she was perfect on the prone standing just look amazing I was so impressed that's one thing that Margo is so good at is technicality of things this was a very technical event and at the fact that she was able to come out and put it all down the way she did was impressive plus she's got so much just a competitive confidence but I think she was able to really know what she had to do and then put it in accident in man it really so yeah the only other person that that gave me that same sort of confident viable shooter and just warning was Tia to me she looked great she was shooting hidden cars she did she spent nearly as much time on the shooting range as Margo Alvarez did but she left the shooting range with a four out of five pronin a five out of five standing that's enough for me so the energy to see if Tia to me can challenge Margot Alvarez in the in the next heat so Alvarez the only woman to go sub 1312 21.73 seconds Brooke Hass will take second she has already qualified for the CrossFit Games and the Nicki ma terrazzo and current Shrum are gonna make things interesting as they pick up points on Rachael Garibay in the battle to receive the invite the 2019 Reebok Rosco games irori mcurtin is with Margot Alvarez Margot and amazing performance here you you've gotten to go in a lot of events at the CrossFit Games at Regionals how does this one compare what did you like about it this event particular was really unique and different it's the first time we've had any type of shooting in any sanction Alaura crossfit event so I thought it was really unique and different and I loved that Katie and Bill put it in how did you prepare for it did some preparation a lot of mental preparation with Alex and another head trainer with tactical training back in Vegas and a lot of it I knew come coming down to it would come down to the shots and making them and not have to do any penalties right now you have an opportunity to go to the CrossFit Games but you said you will not why is that I've spent a lot of time trainings been eight seasons and obviously I've shared that with the community it's hard because I get emotional because it's been a big part of my heart and I'm very happy to have been part of the community from day one and this thank you guys and if I qualify I would decline and pass the next person and have let them have that opportunity because I've had six seasons at the games and a couple prior to regionals and it's been amazing and I would want them to experience that on behalf of the fans we thank you and congratulations on an event win Marnell Alvarez with the top time as we have one heat to go and once again here's a look at the challenge it is four rounds of skiing and three rounds of shooting two from the prone position and one standing and it's that one in the middle that is really the game and we talked about it earlier we knew that that was gonna be the key it's gonna be how much are you able to recover and keep yourself calm during that particular one especially be able to go five four five or have a really good score on the phone absolutely and I think these guys are a little bit of an advantage because they're seeing what the event entails they know what the the high-water mark is on the shooting range I talk to Auntie Torres daughter before the start of the competition she said and I quote her she has to slow it down remember not to rush and take her time and just focus on hitting a target and I think that's the key is it's so easy to be kind of you're used to these brute force events and you're really pushing and this is an event where you actually have to take it back a notch and just kind of be calm and and so she is pretty interesting to hear that she she recognized that in herself here are the ten athletes competing in a second of two heats and all of them have already qualified the CrossFit Games so now the battle is for the event win here at the rogue Invitational under this TIA to me who has the overall lead 362 points a 22 point lead on Sarah sickness honor we start with that thirty calorie skier is Laurel Horvath the woman who finished second to TIA to me last year at the 2018 Reebok CrossFit Games gets to her skier go right next to Danny Spiegel who's on the bottom of your screen you know one of the things that this particular heat in general it's a it's cool for this heat is the fact that there's no pressure everyone already made it so there's no pressure but even with that you know that they still have to think about what their recovery is gonna be as we coming through they always want to make sure that they really stay with the technique they all learn how to do it they have professional you know Olympians coming out and showing them how to shoot now it's just about coming out and having some fun they the point of this sanctioned event is to make it and qualify for the game they already have so they get to come out here really experience it and have some fun have fun and just enjoy it they had a great great some great some great teachers I got Susan Dunkley here who was out on Lane number nine she's actually good silver medals from the 2017 World Championships the first woman and history of the United States biathlon to win a medal at the world say she's out there I as one of the officials today that's Brooke Wells going through her 30 calories Tia to me she's your overall leader the athletes will get one rep credited and the scoreboard above for every ten calories that they complete first place overall trying to hold off Sarah Sigma's daughter who was 22 points back we talked about the confidence that she had leaving the shooting range this morning you said that she was felt very confident having that 5 out of 5 that 4 out of 5 she does that so well anyway she rides a lot of confidence and once she gets that you know has a great event it carries it into the next night you just watch a ride that wave it's amazing else you can do that I've seen my life--for on Olympic athletes 6-ounce Olympic athletes just watching them what they do I've seen Michael I saw Michael Phelps win his first gold medal and you watch he's gonna pick up when you watch champion athletes and and to me has that giacconi has that when I watch her leave the shooting range she didn't overdo it she did just enough to hit the targets and left and I watched her yesterday I don't know her at all but it's really interesting ice it didn't surprise me when I watched her performances yesterday and see that confidence that she left at the practice range just about every athlete is done now they all are finished with her first gig and all of them are on the rifles and they will shoot five shots prone a Kristin halter getting set to shoot she has skiing and her blood her father competed at the 1984 Winter Olympics in Sarajevo and cross-country skiing so she should know how to work that urge well yeah he was a mid 1980s I think he actually competed in my hometown we had a World Cup skiing event in my hometown when I was just a kid and her dad was in that field and a desire goes 4 for 5 and the shooting one one penalty laughs induced we flusters as a result of that missed world horvath so far three for three Kerry Pierce's four for five right now Arabo is perfect Kerry Pearson horvath on that last shot they're thinking about it taking their time Pierce gets the pitch shot horvath dragging it she gets her fifth shots of hora bath in Pierce and Aaron will all go right back to the earth that's a huge boost of confidence for both of them the christen Holt is going to run to penalty laps or solder missed three Sigma's on her only hit run she's going too far way back here off the early pace as Carrie Pierce Laura Horvath Catherine David's daughter and Christy arrow are all on their second of four thirty calories skis and it was interesting to watch so we know that Catherine missed that one shot missed that one shot she went down did the penalty came back but because she was able to get those shots off faster than the other ladies she basically got to the ERG the same time everyone else's but she's right in the mix with everyone she didn't even lose anything missing that one spot and you see that a lot in normal winter biathlon that that the faster skier or the quote-unquote better athlete can often absorb that penalty as long as it's not too many as long as it's not two or three penalties Kerry Pierce now leading duck dabas David's daughter but not by much they're just ten calories apart right now as they move through the second ski portion Laura Horvath and Kerry Pierce they are on the right side Christy arrow mo is in the bottom left those are the three women who were perfect throughout round one as far as scoring is concerned each round is eight reps so three reps for the thirty calories and then five reps for the shots Kathryn David's daughter moving just ahead of Pearce now on the physical side of this event watching the technique most of these athletes have it figured out they've done a really good job of figuring out where the hips need to be on initiation we see if you see a little bit of a raise of the heel that's actually a good thing might you might not do that as you get more tired but when you get a little bit higher and the heels come off the ground it's a sign that their hips are getting forward and a little bit of a jump into this exactly exactly get their body high and let their body weight come down Kerry Pearson Katherine Davis daughter are done with their second of four skis and now it's the shooting portion and they will do this from the standing position and this is going to be the difference-maker Pearce is one of the athletes who's trying to trying to master that biathlon standing technique where you put your elbow on your hip she's a little bit but it will give her a little more stability she starts with the mister she struggled in the in the training this morning and the standing and then hit four four five on our last time so she can't hit the target she knows she can which is a lot more tired now than she was when she was practicing christean bow meanwhile has hit her first shot misses her second Davis daughter is the same hit her first mr. second Pierce now hope for - Horvath is on the rifle she hit her first shot now - he's on the range on 0.5 she steps in two hits for David's daughter - for Horvath Horvath has two four - David are as three yet standing so David's daughter is doing a great job of holding it together mentally in this harvest of Wow impressive for Katherine Davis daughters he's going to sprint to that penalty lap Kerry Pierce meanwhile went two for five so katrin davidsdottir is going to be well in front here once he gets done with her one penalty lap Laurel Horvath hit her first tube then missed her next - Jimmy hasn't hinton than a Miss the whore bath goes three four five solid result for her and David Satter right back on the ERG already as most of the athletes are still on the shooting range the time to beat belongs to Margot Alvarez twelve 21.73 seconds did that in the first heat one thing we didn't talk about is the actual range time the range time it's a penalty in itself total longer time you take the the more the rest of the field gets away and Cochran David Starr is running away with this biathlon event off of a great shooting performance she's just missed one each of her to shooting stages via two meanwhile goes for four five on her standing round she's gonna try to get back in this but David's out he's got a huge lead on the field well the thing that I saw with David's daughter is after she was very successful in that standing segment she wasn't coming back smiling so she knew she made it through the hard part now it's like okay now I can just get going I can lay down it's a haul give me money from your house yeah you kind of kind of start forcing the pace a little bit she's probably pushing just a little bit harder on this ugh then she did the first purge set because she knows it's not standing shooting coming up to meas back on trying to chase down David's daughter she's still in for trailing by about a hundred roughly a hundred calories right now and I will say all those ladies that rep on the front when you watch them from the side they are are going huge into the technique you really see them really trying to get that elbow on to the hip bone like the the coaches we're telling them yesterday and before it was like hey my lats are kind of in the way I mean these are hard laughs you know so they're like put your elbow and hip in the thing I can't get there but all of them are really trying to make that technique right woman like the fact that they are getting there being so successful on all those shots is amazing graphic Davis out her now onto her third and final round to shooting as she is trying to hold out Christie era mo who was on the ski ERG that's the battle for first place I think that point you were making about the about the shooting position standing I think that was really critical and the men should take notice of that as well as they go in oh yeah once you get tired that foam structure really matters David Zeller hits her first target it examined a little bit of time to shot once from the prone one she was standing in grab ups two for two for David's daughter she's feeling calm three for three and like her focus really calm and now one final ski Ergon she is looking to demolish margul Alvarez's top time with close 21.73 that is an impressive shooting scored 13 for 20 and that's gonna win it I think because that his daughter is way out in front because great composure we talked about the time the region sheet she basically she fed to what we were talking about she came in and had more confidence and know she her confidence kept growing and she let him go she shot more like about a world class laughs that kid was very quick probably one to three breaths between shots and that Keynes is really a good it's a good indicator we were talking about doing the same thing over and over again one of the things that helps you do that is getting a good cadence yeah and one of the things that the coaches were talking to the athletes earlier was don't try to be so perfect take your breath in on the breath out as it's coming down take a shot so it's it's cutting the time down but it's also making it so you aren't so unsure and bouncing all over the place well katrin davidsdottir is setting a new standard for the sport if this is ever contestant CrossFit event she's proving to be the master at this Mila Chrissie arable goes five for five on her thigh loud and she will get back to the skier but she flashes a smile to the crowd she's gonna jump right in to second place with that shooting performance using your top 2 Katherine Davis doubters on the right Christy arrow is on the left Tia to me meanwhile just went 5 for 5 on her final round that's who she goes right back on the skier she has a chance to catch arrow Mon now there's only three athletes chasing the leaders now that are no longer doing penalties sara sigmundsdottir who's in second place overall behind to me he's now just getting to her third round who's your top three TIA to me bottom right Katherine Davis honor takes out to the finish line and the sled dog can shoot who knew Katherine Davis daughter takes the biathlon Wow 1026 crushed it nearly 2 minutes faster than margul alvarez's prior top time of 12 21 points 7 3 seconds and christy Arabo looking to lock up second place in this event and second place in the heat the TIA to me on the right ear screen is trying to track her down on the earth but arrow mo had a good head start on to me she performances for tui as to messes on the nation of 13 for 15 for tech tia to me but just a little bit off the pace on the physical aspect of it from David's daughter and 2 mese judges hand is in the air and she has caught arrabal on a skier éramos judges hand is in the air so to me it's going to be a sprint between the two of them looking to take second place in the event Oh Timmy moves in a second right there it's gonna be who can get to the finish line first the tube he's done she is off and Tia to me it's going to take second place Elmo has done her mo will take third and that is huge for Tia to me as far as the overall standings are concerned because the woman immediately behind her is Sarah's sickness daughter and sickness daughter is on her final ski right now singing star singing six horvath is a cross at horvath her time is good enough for fourth place in the event now Carrie Pearce getting set to finish up Carrie Pearce had a really good start to the event hit five for five and then missed three of the three in each of the last two shooting stages so she got it good good start but it's easy you can start you can forget that frustration you let starts to seep in there it does it really controlled all the confidence in the road really what you're doing so I hate this one anymore it's classic biathlon you think you've got it figured out and then you start thinking this top box you shouldn't be thinking the Kerri Pierce just came across the finish line she was in fifth place in the Aventis marvel Alvarez will slide to six now here comes sara sigmundsdottir but she is across is Sigma's daughter six in the heat seventh place in the event she gets a hug from TIA to me Kristin halter getting set to finish up I really think this we know the physical aspect of this of this event you know in the skier but I think that it's so much more of a mental game it is so the athletes that are able to really control that negative thought process when anything's happening are gonna be huge and we know that a lot of the things that Catherine Davis out has always been has done a lot of work with them birds no with her coach is that kind of training that I'm gonna stay right here I'm gonna stay very focused I'm gonna keep the mental thoughts control what I can do all that kind of stuff and man it paid off it doesn't matter what sport mental self-talk or negative self talking competition was pretty humid oh yeah pretty common across all sports not nowhere is it more important not to do but when you need to be so so accurate right it's one thing if you can move things around and it can be a little more forgiving it's really not very forgiving like oh we have to hit the target I mean it's it's literally a blink of an eye it's it's a twitch yeah and you're not missing by a lot it's a you know it's tiny little increments that you missed the shot compared to hitting it so it's it's a game of micro inches Annie Thorisdottir and Brook Wells are on their final ski and their judges hands are in the air at about the same time so this one will come down to a sprint to the finish possibly and annie has done first and she is off 45 seconds now to 40 seconds before we hit the 15 minute time cap is Thorisdottir gets in 14 18 point six two seconds and it will be 11th in the event jet 9 misses out of 15 shots and that tells you how important the shooting is this is great for the guys to see this as well as they're coming up next Nick you can get a sense of what they need to do and we talked about that 1215 hits one it Brooke wells is Doug he's going to get in inside the time cap and that leaves Danny Spiegel is the only athlete left on the field and she is really trying to finish up those calories get across the finish line it doesn't look like it's going to happen for her [Applause] great effort from the speeder that just won't able to get in across the finish line inside the time cap katrin davidsdottir though smashes this event ten twenty four point zero five seconds to take the win what was most impressive I thought with her was the fact that she was confident all the way through now we took the same thing in Margo but just that two-shot difference was almost a two-minute span you know based on what you're gonna do then you can see her confidence growing like oh I missed I mean the fact she was able to only miss one on the standing for scene you saw how happy she was with that came out that smile and then from that point on it was like oh I'm in that confidence to you and she was able to shoot well because she paced it well she doesn't go out too fast she did in what we call her negative split race she got faster and faster and the confidence grew and that is exactly how you do this sport and she put on a clinic with the rifle as she was perfect at that from the Prohibition go time and you see that the breath in and all the way down take this on shotgun she was quick on the polti beat everything was great their mechanics on the bolting was good her confidence coming down the shot was good she knew that she can hit the targets and that's really what it's all about is seeing the Tartan go down and feeling like you're gonna make it happen again she was dominant the katrin davidsdottir takes the event with a time of ten twenty four point zero five the only women ago sub eleven the to me arable whore bath and pierced they all beat margo Alvarez's top time so alvarez slides down to six and niki matarazzo burke templates finished that's by far her best finish so far of the competition corinne Shrum Holly Henderson to Rachael garibay three athletes who are locked in the battle for the invite from this event and Shrum may be the woman who hangs on to that but we'll have to see how the official standings play out through five events but Rory mckernon is with your event winner natura David's daughter Katherine I'm gonna quote Sean woodland he said who knew that the sled dog could shoot how did you get so good at this and every time that I came off and I was fresh it off the field I'll go right to this and I was practicing okay so that's one thing that you've done in this particular competition everyone can take a page out of your book on how to how to move past something that they're not particularly happy with what are the keys to doing that for you it's good practice it's eight events and at the games it's five days everything's not going to go like you want so for me I look at it as great practice for the games it wasn't my day today's a new event we have three more and I told myself and my coach that we were gonna go have I'm gonna one good event each and every time and hopefully you can high-five and have a good day today we're excited to see it ladies and gentlemen katrin davidsdottir overall standings now after five events is Tiye to me who continues to lead as she increases the margin between her and sara sigmundsdottir kristen wholethe moves into third place Annie Thorisdottir and Katherine Davis are rounding out the top five Corinne schrum is now the woman who holds on to the invite to the CrossFit Games and she's just six points up on Rachael garibay as that invite is continues to get passed around with now just three events ago the men are coming up in the biathlon let's take a look at their standings coming into this event this is halfway on day two of the 2019 a rogue Invitational it's Patrick velder who is your overall leader 344 points Matt Fraser currently sits in second place Chandler Smith is in fourth this is a guy who came here just looking to earn an invite and he is in the mix for a possible spot on the podium 280 points and this is what the men will be facing it is the biathlon it will be four rounds of skiing three rounds of shooting and there was an absolute lesson in the women's heat so hopefully the guys saw that they know that the prone will be okay they know how now how important the standing portion is and then really getting after than that final prone segment I think what's really interesting is you look at that leaderboard as how somebody could you know guys into third fourth and fifth can get the points in this event that's at the top of the leaderboard really struggles in this event it's kind of its kind of a fall chrome event for this weekend yes and the man you just heard if you're just joining us is Chad sambala he is a former US biathlon national team member and he was the man that probably got you fired up watching biathlon at the Winter Olympics last year with his commentary at the Pyeongchang Olympics in 2018 and he has been kind enough to join us up here to add some expertise to the booth in this event here are your lane assignments for the first of two heats Colt mertens and Ben Smith are two guys who man they have to have a huge event here if they want to make up the deficit that they currently have on Chandler Smith let's send it down to Rory mckernon with more on the rifle that these men will be using in this event rope yeah so we're gonna talk actually about what their POV might look like I've got Emily tragic actor with me here she was my coach yesterday so you know you know she's good but she's gonna give you a look at what it actually looks like POV style and Bill the only input I can have is that when I was doing it let me see that dot was going up and down like that once you get that breath heavy so you got to choose your shot use your breath and and shoot on the way out it's really interesting the coaches here all members of the Craftsman Green Team and several of them are Olympic by athletes but the the little lesson you just got there from Emily drives attacker is it's it's really easy to forget to line up the sight right in front of your eye there's a site that there's a site down at the end of the barrel that you put the black circle in the middle of but a lot of beginners will miss the shot because the sight alignment it's called there's not actually be a degree or two off by having their their GPS on there on the rifle stock in the wrong place and not not looking at all three circles instead of just the two at the end and what we talked about with those coaches earlier was okay what are they what do these guys need to do what what I need to do the first thing is you have to worry about that recovery because it's how can you push hard on the skier and then bring that heart rate in that breathing down and the last thing is a technique and I didn't really realize there was a real specific technique not just I need to hit the target but I need to line my body if I need to get my elbow my hip and we're gonna see who is able to utilize that and have some success with it or who can just kind of shoot the way they've normally shot the regular guns and have success that way which I didn't see as much success that way right the technique III think you're right I don't wanna I don't want to condemn those folks and not hitting terraces they might they might prove us wrong but there's a difference between also a lotta people have not hunting is very different than hunting this is a you have to really control your breathing and get into a rhythm with a breathing you're not breathing hard when you well maybe your heart's pounding trying to shoot your target but it's a different kind of shooting for sure heat number one is underway and we start with 440 calories on the skier who they will receive one repetition for every 10 calories they complete then they have five shots from the prone position and for every shot that they miss they have to complete a penalty up in that penalty will have consist of a run down to the pylon to them three kettlebell thrusters at 53 pounds and you can only do one or two thrusters compared to somebody's doing five or six that's the difference becomes exponential in this event it's really been interesting having never seen this event or ever having none of us ever seen to see how it's kind of playing out it's quite a good format I think it's fair and I think that we're seeing the kinds of gaps that you would expect to see when the shooting is done well Jakub faff working through his first 40 calories watching the double pole technique buries the hips high and those are the targets at which the men will be shooting once they are done and you really didn't appreciate how small they are until you look at it through a site it's about the size of a little bigger than a half-dollar from 10 meters away so about 10 yards it's not a long distance but it's a really small target for that for that distance and I was hearing that the the distances that they use and the size that they use this ends up being comparable even though if they brought the they brought it closer that right yeah I would say I would say categorically it's a little bit easier than what the winter biopsies are doing this is a much easier prone shot together come on now we don't want to go expert level right out of the gate you know put it's an intermediate level what the standing is pretty close if you come on it the difficulty of shooting standing is pretty close to being difficult to shooting standing in the winter biathlon sport Rasmus Anderson is the first man on to the rifle now Ben Smith is there and Jacob faff Casper gamla mark as well Anderson hits his first and I'm looking to see how these guys breathing you can see what Rasmus does he takes a breath in and then as he's breathing out that's what all the coaches were telling us to shoot on the exhale and the sight will and you're basically full qareen over that elbow so it actually the barrel is rising right you're exhaling right so you're you got a photograph the barrels down below right and as you slowly let it out it should it should land on the target at nearly full exhale about 90% exhale that's where you want it to settle Rasmus Anderson and Jacob path both go five or four four five pardon me so they have one penalty laugh to complete before they can return to the earth for their second of four skis nobody perfect from the men's competition Martin has got three four five right now is still shooting but again Anderson's back back on the earth as his mertens billon Martin right now five four five the Dylan Martin the only man to be clean in his first shoot so far the Martin comes off the shooter he goes right back to the skier he moves right into the third position even though he took his time shooting he's put himself in contention for the wind now by being perfect Rasmus Anderson on the right of your screen he is your leader Jacob faff who was also four for five on the shoot is in second and it's Dylan Martin courtesy of his five for five effort from the pro position who sits in third and with Dylan Martin we got to remember when you're shooting you take your time your heart rate everything's coming down he didn't have to take that trip back so it where his heart rates gonna start to go back up again with the run the thrust is coming back so he gets to come to the skier fresh so he's got the time it takes to run down to the person to come back is gonna be about 20 seconds 30 seconds that's 30 seconds more rest and he got over ass missed as they hit the as they hit that's gearing together and maybe more importantly he goes into the standing shoot without having done a single thruster that's huge that's you I thought I mean everything is down just a little bit less than everybody else those increments of stress are just a little bit less these are your top three in the bottom left is Jacob faff and then in the right in the red shirt that is Dylan Martin and next to him in the white is your leader Rasmus Anderson each round is nine reps you get four for the 40 calories and then five for each shot you make or for each penalty lap that you complete Rasmussen is really good technique on the skier he's gotta see how extensive body all the way at the top of the big guy but he's super strong can he get when he when he puts all that power in one direction and he's using his body weight on top of it he's a good guy slipping those calories come off the ERG really quickly and Anderson now on to his standing round he was 4 for 5 from the prone position he's breathing hard you could see this is gonna be a tough shooting but for me really gave it on the good Stalag standing position he's using that exist her shut all that's a great start for him huge confidence building he is putting his at turning his elbow down on the hip trying to use his skeletal system Dylan Martin he's got to he's on the rifle and Anderson two for too fast meanwhile has missed one Anderson with his first missed paps goes very quickly to four five and goes right into the penalties Anderson's got to keep track of that make sure that he doesn't get too far behind now that he's got another miss he's equal faff with one shot left got to make this a hit if you want to take the lead back he does so two penalty laps for Rasmus Anderson once he hits 18 reps he will be into his third round Dylan Martin who is perfect in round one is now 1 for 3 in round 2 and he is taking his time at time times melting away there he's got to play the game you've got to decide there's a double jeopardy situation right now if you want to get back in this race you got to kind of take the shot and he is now missed three of four lead is just melting his Berman Martin ends with a hit so he has three penalty laps to complete whereas the Sanderson meanwhile is back on the ERG for his third or four skis forty calories on the ERG and he would eat in the prone position one final time Berman went four for five for the second straight time he's gonna do one set of thrusters and get right back on the ERG he's got Anderson is out in front faff chasing him and then it's gonna be it looks like Berman is gonna move into that third spot and get on the earth razzes Anderson is your leader Jacob faff and followed by Jake Berman the best shooter is Jake Berman with just two misses out of ten shots Jake Berman just got back to the skier he is on in the middle of your screens in the dark blue shirt as Dylan Martin in the red is completing his penalty laps Anderson knoweth a huge [Music] five calories gap on fat nice cadence nice smooth motion by Anderson watching him double pull he looks comfortably looks like a cross-country skier it's got a nice nice the initiation it comes straight down goes straight back up nice and inefficient he's not wasting any extra motion and then you look at Berman he's a little more flailing he kind of moves his arms out to the side using a little bit more extra energy it's not as efficient this is a power generating sport it's relatively short but efficiency does pay off on the shooting range as the event gets longer Anderson's nonetheless Jacob faff is on the right that's your battle for the top spot right now on this opening Heath in fact this looks it's exhausted I mean there's no other reason to be on that skier and not be using your body to pull those down him you can see him it's almost like he's taking a rest every two strokes and that's just not gonna get him moving what he needs to do he can use his body and just come down with it let your weight pulled that ski down pull his handles down instead of just moving your arm just wait some time yeah Anderson had really consistent smooth motion so he's not using any extra energy on tension anywhere in his body just nice and relaxed when you come to the bottom as shoulder up muscles with real assets I'm really big good sign that he's they've got an efficient motion Anderson back to the rifle now this is his final shoot and he will complete one more ski and then get across the finish line so he has hit his first looks really good drinker to this trigger squeeze is really smooth three four three four Rasmus Anderson he's he's got this figured out Jacob faff now on the right of your screen on to his final shoot four four four four Anderson with one to go and Anderson is pleading through its final shoots of 40 calories remained and then a sprint across the finish line magic number 12 12 12 15 Jacob faff meanwhile misses twice he's gonna fall off the lead paces he has to complete two penalty laps now the door for second place is wide open as berman now trying to fill that spot a anderson rolls away from everybody with his great double point to eke really smooth shooting great focus berman is all he misses his third shot beneath these last two he'll go 12 for 15 as well Berman on this final shot and he gets it four for five for Jake Berman the Rasmus Anderson is all by himself in the lead as we are now inside five minutes ago before we hit the time cap Anderson now really racing the second Heat when comes back and be chasing Anderson faff in the meantime has moved ahead of them here comes bourbon back to the skier for his final ski Rasmus Anderson putting the finishing touches on his events Anderson is done and he will take the heat fantastic effort from Rasmus Anderson as he crosses the finish line ten forty nine point seven nine seconds I really like this performance there were no spikes in it it was just a smooth consistent all the way through both his double pulling motion and his shooting style that is really well done that's Jake Berman who is trying to take down Jakob faff for second place in this heat and I don't know why I don't know why that that throwing the arms thing is so so popular with the skiers I know that people are trying to recover I think it's kind of coming from wall ball a wall ball technique but you're not getting anything out of that it's not recovering you you're not getting anything it's a lot of extra movement you want to stay as consistent as you can your arm has to stay in one plane use your body and relax on the way up there's both to recover on that on that upward stance well the the argument for it would be that it's comfortable to him and that he can turn it over and it's a really a short relatively short events but in crossing the ski what we were there before is this the least amount of effort from point A to point B so you're fully extended you look behind your hips you want to go straight back up with as little effort as possible let those shoulders or his shoulders are really working when he's trying to pull them right yeah so so really what you want to do is your body will go back to the normal spot so you know it's not the most efficient but it still might generate enough power Jacob fat is across the finish line ahead of Jake Berman fat 1206 even Berman six seconds behind him at twelve twelve point four one seconds and that leaves Dylan Martin as your leader on the field and Martin is just about done with his final ski Martin is in the middle of the field now right in front yet in the red shirt Martin is done and he will get in well inside the 15-minute time gap twelve forty three point six eight for Dylan Martin and Casper gamble mark on the skier the only athlete right now choosing to wear a hat well you know the snow is bright today the warm out here the snow is you know well we were had some winter by outside because it's cold I'm from Minnesota this is awfully hot for me I don't think I could be doing this with a hat on gamble mark is one of the athletes who will be going to the CrossFit Games after finishing 24th in the world wide open he's out of Denmark he making his first trip Madison Wisconsin four men are left on the field soon to be three as Gambel mark is now done and he will sprint across the finish line it's Jake Frey Ben Smith and Colton mertens who are all still on the field Ben Smith on the right Burton's on the left well it's good to be right we talked about what kind of shooting performance we thought we'd need to win this thing and the women it was 13 which is really surprising I didn't think that I honestly didn't think that we'd see a 13 hit event but the men the men the winner 12 hits that's kind of that kind of seemed like the looking at the penalty compared to the efforts it seemed like the right number and it has proven to be so burdens is across so that leaves Ben Smith and Jake Frye is the only two athletes left on the field as we have about 30 seconds to go before we hit the 15-minute time gap and I think right now he's just taking this as you know it's just a training day he realizes this not gonna be a successful finish for him as far as getting himself to the game he knew he had a late start know after his surgery he's just rainy day now I'm hoping for him that he's taking it out that he's not you know getting subject to a an unpiloted situation Ben Smith is gonna sneak in across the finish line just underneath that 15 minute I'm captain Jake fry were the only man in the opening heat to not complete the event in those 15 minutes Rasmus Anderson with some impressive shooting now has the top mark with one heat to go at 10:49 point seven nine seconds it was really fun to watch Rasmus just stayed so confident through that entire segment started off very strong we know he's very powerful athletes so you know he able to work that that skier without any sort of an issue in chat you were talking about how clean his performance on the skier was which is great because and that's something these guys do but when it came down to the shooting that's where I was even more impressed with what he was doing he seemed very confident just like we were saying did the exact same thing every time you can see him you know breathe in and then exhale then absent he would take his shot very successful first round came back we were wondering what the second round was gonna look like still very successful on the standing shot and we knew that was gonna be an issue for most wasn't an issue for him at all he looked amazing they look great if you look at the three who have really succeed in this event you look at Alvarez on the first tee of the women we get David's daughter in the second you look at Robin Anderson it's all about finding that kind of cool smooth approach to the event when you hear emotionally high emotionally low physically - if we road doesn't work that got to be smooth from start to finish Rasmus Anderson the only athlete who goes sub 1110 49.7 nine seconds Jacob fashion finishes in second Jake Berman and Dylan Martin followed by passport gamble mark rounding out the top five we're sitting down the Rory hurling with glass for Sanderson well Rasmus you've done a lot of things one of the more veteran athletes who's here and you said you guys can't wipe the smile off your face that was a really cool event tell me why Oh something new right we haven't tried shooting in any event before so I think it's fun like combining Fitness with shooting it's sort of in my wheelhouse so I can obviously I'm not complaining but I think it's a good test as well it's fun you were really composed you did fantastically how did you prepare yourself for it personally man asked a question I have no idea like yeah I'm a bass alone I haven't no idea how would they do this I was like standing in a bathroom kind of like lining it up like no honestly just warming up as I go to any other event loosening up and then we were able to practice the other day a little bit and that's sort of it yeah I know you've got a heavy focus on team but you're here is an individual why did you choose to come and compete because this is awesome like because of this because of everything that's going on here because of the crowd because of the thing wrote put on I was like I'm not gonna let I'm not going to turn this down all right Thank You Rasmus Anderson Rasmus Anderson we'll have to wait and see if his mark is good enough for the event win is we have one heat remaining here are your overall standings coming into the day Patrick Felder found himself on top of key overall leaderboard at the end of four events he has a 12 point lead over Matt Fraser Cole sagres in third and it is Chandler Smith in fourth Rasmus Anderson can move himself up that leaderboard as he comes in in 12 place overall but looking to rack up 100 points with an event win 2nd heat of the biathlon the 5th of 8 scored events here at the 2019 rogue Invitational Patrick Filner the overall leader will be in lane number 5 and Chandler Smith it will be in Lane 7 one man who will not be on the floor that is Lucas Holmberg who withdrew today he was dealing with an illness yesterday but and Chandler Smith we knew he being contingent for an invite but this guy's in contention for the polio he's a contender for the podium he's showing that he deserves to be here long strolling solo but some of these guys and in this particular event he's an army rat so I want to see what kind of shooting mobility is gonna be able to carry over we had it we had it discussing the would it would same thing with someone like Matt Fraser we know that he shoot we saw how he was shooting he kind of chilled to do his normal technique is that gonna work or does it gonna be better to go with their actual techniques well I've been I've been in the military I was laughing then we joined the army and I had to relearn how to shoot actually there in 16 so it can be a good thing a bad thing we're about to find out but I think it's a great opportunity for Chandler Smith again getting on the podium with this event so just like everything else we already know how important the recovery is and I don't think it's a matter of you know are you recovering during the row or not it's or during the ski or a part or not it's how much you can slow everything down and relax you it's not just your your your heart but your mental mind state the things gonna be the technique we saw how important and how well at work not just am I putting my elbow on my hip but when am I decided to shoot on the exhale knowing how long to wait before you line up this life all these things played played huge the people that followed these leads in the last three beats succeeded I want to see her that's - same thing here yeah Albert God Margaux alvarez was telling that in the women's I was sure she won her heap and she was really gonna machine rain she said that she had to focus on her breathing I think it's a really good thing to focus on when you're not an expert at this event it's good to pick one maybe two things that are giving you success and just focus on that and try to put everything else on your mind and I think that's what these guys have to do to be successful Chandler Smith as the man you just heard his Chad Savile up the guy whose voice you might recognize from the Olympic biathlon covers last year from Pyeongchang he's been kind enough to join us in the booth here former US national biathlon team member as Chandler Smith works his way through his 40 calories on the skier each round is nine reps you get credit for one rep for every ten calories and then one rep for every shot you make or for every penalty lap you complete Travis mayor came to the shooting range right behind him is Horner mayor and Horner the first two men onto the rifle and now Matt Fraser is on to the rifle as well here comes the Olsen Chandler Smith who does his glasses Chandler's in the bottom right aha if he at that effort on the earth was too much both Horner and mayor start with a Miss the door is wide open for the rest of the field Smith starts with hit as does Matt Fraser Hornets a second the Frasers two for two right now Aires over to Frazier's to four to raise or three for three first miss and Chandler Smith with a miss Travis Mayer has hit one of five so he's struggling Matt Fraser goes for four five so he'll complete one penalty black nobody cleans from this second heat yet panchik is three for three he could move into the lead with two more good shots he's four for four meanwhile Chandler Smith taken off on his two penalty labs Padgett goes five for five for Scott pants he's gonna be in the lead although Matt Fraser is getting back to the earth at the same time and that does scott-padget and that was important is okay yeah Matt didn't have that myth but he didn't take the long haul on those shots he was very fast scott panted took a lot more time made those shots count put those together now on the skeered at the same time now we already know that the next one is gonna be the important one right that's gonna be really what's gonna happen and you know and you know that Matt Fraser he's either the gold standard of the sport oh my god physically he's the guy to beat but panchik took the extra time as a nice the duality of the sport was really exhibited well there between Fraser and pancetta the way they approached it that panchik has now the advantage to be almost even with Matt Fraser using the shooting range to do that now even if you watch the way Scott panchik is doing the skier he's using more arm than we saw in that phrase to do I mean I would pick just the way the Matt Fraser is which is really using his body bit Scott just seems very relaxed he seems very relaxed he's using his arm giving as much power into that output but he's just keeping everything nice and calm which I think it's gonna be important going into the standing right you have to remember that the power output also takes calories it takes a heart rate it takes time it takes things that are gonna throw you off your game in a standing shooting a magic being smooth just like we saw in the last three winners of the last three heats he's keeping it smooth and relaxed he's not maybe going for max power right now putting enough power to stay close to freezer there are 31 scored repetitions each round is worth 9 reps they will do three complete rounds and then they finished with a 40 calories skier it's one rep for every 10 calories and then one rep for every shot made or for every penalty left repeated Scott panchik is your leader he's through 12 of those 31 reps Matt Fraser right there with him Paul singer sits in third and Chandler Smith who is the guy who had received the invite from this event the CrossFit Games sits in fourth if he just avoids a total disaster today he's probably going to Madison well that disaster can be avoided on the next shooting stage two or three standing that'll get him out of the woods but if he misses all five then he's got trouble Scott panchik is done and he will now move on to his second shoot this will be done from the standing position and Matt Fraser is right there as well as the two of them try to catch their breath before they will start squeezing off some shots here oh this is interesting finish watching magic matches you watch me Fraser they're covering that's exactly but that's Matt's thing he does that he'll settle down to that into that hot position and just see where everybody is Fraser is up first what's amazing to me I wasn't sure how how when did these guys would look some the skier and you look pretty tired I mean that's making it a very real biathlon event my comparison of the winter winter edition the Fraser misses his first shot it's a second toe got a hold it together fire yeah he's two for two he's in a good mental staring out I'd say if he can just get these off squeezes off even with the penalty he can take the win but he doesn't want to take too much then a little bit of wind circling around the studio that's not helpful either Dan took me 1:43 sagres bonus for shut Fraser Rangers you for oh this is great for Fraser he's almost just got to squeeze this off and go for it I mean I've asked this before I've asked this question for what can't this guy do amazing I think we need to have a drawing contest maybe he's good at everything so here's the thing he's clearly a mental giant oh yeah he's so confident he didn't look particularly great in the training shooting but he goes 4 for 5 in the standing he's missed two out of eight out of ten shots great position for maturation meanwhile Chandler Smith with Oh for five that's that's a new thing he's gonna spend the better part of two minutes doing penalty laps and that is gonna sink him down the results gotta try to not get too crazy buddy he looks like he's approaching it well he's he's just jogging the jaw he's not trying to get worked up best thing best thing for him is to stay composed through these five penalty laps I mean the good news for Chandler Smith is he has such a huge cushion right now over the men chasing him in the standings for the invite that he can putt one into the stands and still be okay yeah but you sad thing is that he's gonna lose the chance of the podium I look just a little bit more with this vibe from this performance well we already know that he's one of those guys that has a lot of negative and even even so Proclaimers I talked negative a lot like that boys get very loud and he had a very successful first day he doesn't want to have those I guess that was just a fluke I guess that was what happened oh I'm supposed to shoot I didn't shoot he needs to be okay with this he needs to just let it roll off the back and just keep on going this morning just say that as and I came to these CrossFit was crossing event I didn't really know what to expect but that was the one thing I thought would be the issue for these athletes is that the difference between this and other events is that's that's fine difference between positive and negative mental self-talk that's the difference in this port from Raleigh from any other event they're doing this week Matt Fraser and Travis Mayor Scott panchik are your top three Street Horner is up there as well Fraser through 21 of the 31 repetitions and 22 once he completes that you will move on to his final shoot that will be from the prone position Maris has snuck in there he's only hit half of his target so he's doing very well physically on this event that's and that's his thing I mean he he's a a very got a very high pain tolerance so he can just grind on the under physical work the shooting performance of this heat this men's heat is the is the worst we've seen today but Matt Fraser is right at the top of it he's chasing Anderson's time he's got two misses out of ten shots it's really a solid performance I am impressed with maturation has that been all weekend and Fraser's really gonna have to have a good shoot here to catch Rasmus Anderson Anders his time to beat the upper left hand part of your screen ten forty nine point seven nine seconds remember matt has to shoot then he has to complete whatever penalty laps he's assessed and he has one final 40 calories scheme wind picking up it's a little bit unfortunate for these guys it's better now that they're in the prone position the wind can pull you around in the standing but now he's got the more stable prone Fraser hits his first shot two for two good eventine perfect so far three for three I'll be surprised if he misses one at this point he just looks like he's in the groove there's a Miss sorry man sorry man you know it you can tell he's he felt that one due to the wind I was looking up the light come on The Rasmus Anderson looking like he's gonna win the event is we are at about 70 seconds away from his time Fraser gets the last 4 5 12 hits of 15 the one penalty lap for Matt Fraser and the good news from Fraser is even though he's not going to win the event he's chasing Pat Beltre in the overall standings and he is way ahead of Velva right now Belair sitting down in 8th spot got miss 6 of his first 10 shots the Fraser back on the year for the final time 40 calories as Travis Mayor Scott panchik Cole Sager and Street order all on their final shoots Tracey are not conceding that 1049 he's flying on the earth Rasmus Anderson looking like he's gonna lock up the event win the second best time is 1206 that belonged to Jacob faff so if Fraser gets it inside that witch there's a good bet that's gonna happen he'll earn 90 points he trailed Pat Beltre for the overall lead by 12 January Smith doing a good job challenged Smith is three for three on his final shooting stage trying to claw his way back into this for for-4 for Chandler Smith on his last shooting stage and he's all he missed his last shot is the classic fifth shot arrest that it just rested Smith now just one penalty lap to complete and then he'll get back on the skier get the key for him right now just don't finish last I think he's gonna do better than that he's moved right back into the competition but that was great for for five first four shots miss the lights very typical in biathlon you let that last shot go we have a 20 shot shooting station the 20th shot is the hardest shot by Matt Fraser Wood says less than ten calories ago he is done and the three-time fittest man on earth is going to take second place in the biathlon 11:46 point eight seven seconds foreigner chasing his second Beldar now he has moved up to fifth with a good shooting performance on his last days bounder cleaned his last stage went right back to the earth no penalties for vel neuron the final shoot missed six of his first ten and then went five for five in the last shooting stage the belt are trying to do damage control now as it's looking like Matt Fraser is going to erase that 12th point deficit and overtake Bellmer in the standings and sit atop the leaderboard with three events remaining that's a sign of what kind of competitor valor is five or five is where chalice mythic he fitted in fourth overall school singer in a race as Horner is going to get there just ahead of course Sager the orders gonna take fifth of the event singer will take six Chandler's Smith is done Smith will get across as Patrick Fowler is right behind him I mean there were a lot of penalties a lot of penalties and still being able to stay that much it's like you said John just don't take last take Satan that was a great finish 8th place in the event Patrick Valda will finish in 9th place so mat Fraser will now be your new overall leader with three events to go today he won't Valmer he hit more shots in his last stage than he did in the first two that's amazing comeback for him great great great sticking point from him to stay in the competition the way he did Scott panchik at the far end of the field of Noah ohlsen with no shirt there on their final skis panchik is done Willie George's also out on the field less than two and a half to go before we hit that 50 minute I'd cap Olsen is in George is still completing some penalty laps [Music] was George back to the skier he has one minute to do 40 calories to get in inside that 15 minute time gap well we've seen four of these heats and Sam pretty impressed with the event the way it was laid out it's it's it's been a very fair balance between physicality and the mental aspect of shooting is it's a hard thing to do it's hard to come with a format that's not yeah it's not been tried before so kudos to the organizers on this on this great event Willie George we will be going to the cross at Game two the second straight year after he was crowned the French national champion out of the world wide open but now twenty seconds to go [Applause] ten seconds for Willie George [Applause] and that'll do it - Willie George the only man in the final Heat not to finish the event Matt Fraser will take second place in the event as Rasmus Anderson hangs on for the win but more importantly for that man is he is now atop the overall standings this has been a really fun event - why and not just to watch for what it is but watch how these dozens adapted - you see someone like Matt Fraser just like you say Shawn what can't this guy do seriously what can I do this the fact that he just bleeds confident in his ability whether he knows exactly what's happening or not watching him shoot me know that he's a gun guy we know that he goes out and shoots that's cool but he did his own technique he didn't see him doing the elbow on the on the hip but still was able to come off and get four out of five shots on the standing position the poise with incredible very very fun to watch and the other thing he didn't let the factions distract him from his goal which is jumping us back up into that number one position the thing I like about this this event for CrossFit is that it hits that point about what makes champions any people can do a lot of physical and a lot of people can train but it want to come for push come to shove it you've got to perform the mental ability to do that Matt Frazier clearly showed that Rasmus Anderson hangs on for the win the only man to go sub 11 Matt Fraser finishes in second and he is with Rory mccurdy well I took a little bit of a run to go get Matt Fraser but Matt fantastic showing in your heat and you have practice we know with guns but this is a little bit different what was the biggest differences you noticed you know I shoot a lot of pistols and I do do it on a day off so it's with a low heart rate but so when this kind of math I got asked a lot like all you must be excited no it doesn't really translate heat so I had to practice just like everyone else and kind of then hope for the best you were surprisingly good standing up compared to a lot of the athletes what did you find that to be easier no no I I definitely just slowed down this ski took way more time before I got to the rifle so just trying to get that heart rate down as much as I could and then we saw that one that you missed on the last drone shooting what happened yeah three shots went well and then nice big gust of wind came so I just kind of laid there for a minute and waiting for the to die down but no happy with the results Rasmus killed it so it's good chasing him alright congratulations Matt Fraser the individuals are done but we have more biathlon to come the legends take on this event when we come back to the 2019 rogue Invitational [Music] second and final day of the first ever road invitational from Columbus Ohio and rogue headquarters is beautiful 600,000 square foot facility the third event for the legends is up next and we talked about those ten general skills accuracy is one of them that we're testing it here in the biathlon here's where we stand for the women's legends competition coming in Samantha Briggs with a perfect 200 points bag of Wayne Miller sits in second and it's a nice akimoto who is third by two points over Christy Phillips Adkins I'm Sean woodland with Bill cruther we are joined by a man who does a whole lot about glass one chad is table you may not recognize the name but I'm certainly sure you're gonna recognize his boys he was the man who did the color commentary for the Olympics coverage of the winter biathlon competition last year in Pyeongchang this is the test that the athletes are facing three rounds of skiing and shooting and then one final skied [Music] so just look at that rifle we've never seen anything like this in a CrossFit event ever and you know there was a lot of talk about this particular bet and how different it would be and you know like you know like we were talking about Sean accuracy is something that is one of the ten physical traits and so we're testing that - a key here and it's been so fun to watch well I didn't know that when I was asked to come and join you guys I didn't have any any idea what cross it wasn't really kind of been marinating in it for the last 48 hours but this is great I mean I love the fact that these athletes are being tested in a way they've never been tested before and I think this is a great way to do it to implement an Olympic sport in a type of Olympic sport into your into your competitions and we've seen some great performance is already by these athletes so you'll get Matt Fraser he showed why he's great at this at anything he does Annie Sakamoto will be in Lane eight and she is someone I've talked to before the competition I know she has practiced for this event we you know it's fun to watch all the athletes go through the practice go through the training with the coaches I think that everyone is excited to really try something new and test their fitness skills with that to see what they're gonna do but Annie think about Annie she's always smiling that's the most notable thing other than the fact just just below the fact that she's such an amazing athlete it has been for so many years she's always having a good time and you talk about how important to confidence is in an event like this really enjoying it not getting negative thoughts and frustrated I think that's gonna really plate over sprinkle this particular event she's gonna have a good time no matter what well the thing that draws all of us who have been my athletes into the sport is really the shooting aspect most of us come from cross-country skiing which I did as a young young athlete switch this is what a Python at age 19 and what really draws you in is the sort of zen-like requirement of being a good shooter and it's actually fun it's fun except when it's not fun it's fun yeah it's fun really hitting those hits those first hits you have isn't as a young buy athlete really pull you into the sport and then you start figuring out all the nuances to the shooting and that's when you have ups and downs as an athlete it's just like being a Slugger in the major leagues in baseball they have highs and lows yeah you know they have troughs where they don't shoot or where they don't hit the ball very well so so that all that that's that's really that the drys that it is funny you've heard a lot of that city love the shooting for every shot you miss you have to complete a penalty lap and that penalty lap consists of running down to the pylons that we just saw waiting three kettlebell thrusters those things can add up you missed five shots doing it five times well that's part of the that's part of the strategy of what are you gonna do when you're in here you just try to pop off a lot of shots real quick and take the penalty or you really spent some time and make sure that you're gonna make them work and maybe only get one or two penalties the interview with Matt Fraser is pretty telling he slowed down to the standing shooter it's really probably won him that bat he threw his second event but he realized that his heart rate needed to come down for the standing shooting and he just backed off on the double pour the back of Wade Miller will be the first to shoot now Sam Briggs is there as well Wade Miller was spending a lot of time on the shooting range earlier today practicing having some success hit back avoid off to a good start Samantha Briggs has yet to take her first shot there time trying to calm themselves down and I think this is where the surprise might enter in the difference between being in competition and in training is a very big mental difference and there's also big physical difference because you're kind of going for it a little bit more on that first visit Lloyd Miller now 2 for 3 and I you know cross the board we borrow it we've heard everyone say in practice not in practice even on the floor the laying down is easy quote unquote easy for the athlete sort of struggling here and that are having misses that's really gonna send them in do it could send them and do a negative head spin for that stand because they know that's the hardest part they're gonna do bad here can I can do better there Rebecca Miller goes for four five so she'll run one penalty lap Chris and clever so far perfect than T sakamoto three for three she's still shooting taking her time Sakamoto now four for four this is a good strategy she's gonna if she can hit this to go right to the ERG and she'll miss her final shots a 1 penalty lap for Annie Sakamoto what were we saying last Heat pin shot it's the one you're moving along you got all the mental pieces right and you just think about that last shot and pull it left or right so Becca Voight and Chris and clever are on their second rounds there are eight reps in every round you get one rep for every ten calories is Beckham I just get an earful from Chris and clever right now if you get one rep for every ten calories to complete on the Ergun then you get one rep for every shot you make or for every penalty lap you complete clever took her time but she hit all of her shots she's the only one to be perfect so far the shooting range voucher it had a Miss as well and those are your leaders here we are talking to chat about the technique in this skier we see Becca Boyd on the right hand side using that body trying to use it much as you can I think she could probably use their hit a little bit more to drop himself down into it right I think one of the heart being a ski coach I coached skiing for ten years in it and by off on for another five one of the things that it is harder for the females with with a little less body mass in the upper body to roll their entire body into the upper the double pole position with the higher the hips the better generally across the board she's looking good though it's starting to tire just a little bit you see both athletes not quite as powerful as they were the first time on the earth well they knit Krista clevon her arms were bent that whole time to look a lot of tension on the biceps she doesn't really need to have I mean let this go on to kind of relax if you're coming back up right she she doesn't need to have a real straight arm she's you really want to absorb most of it your hips and core right and just let your lats kind of kind of steam stay loose and tight tight and then relax at the end of the push accurate Kristin on left hand side that's a much better stroke and I think it's because she know she's coming in and she's starting to relax Rach avoid Miller is done with her second Ergon now it is the standing portion of the chute one of the things we in winter biathlon is the wind is a big factor the wind just died for for this is McEvoy pack of white Miller's the wind just died for it she's gonna put her hip honor put her Alba on her hip this is good she could probably get a little more a little more support with her her hand being straight rather than bent the way it is at the wrist but it's overall it's a good solid position she's not muscling it Chris and clever meanwhile just finished up her arrghh and she will join Miller on the standing portion of this shoot I want to get through this room to the calm portion of wing this is her first shot wind will really blow them around it's hard enough to hold it steady when it's calm oh for two so far for Miller Kristin Kleber misses her first shot Becca Boyd Miller now over 304 for Rebecca boy Miller clapper gets one at this point if you just hit any standing shot you can win the event on standing looks like that gets having some issues with that with the bolt you might need to ask the range official to come help her out she may be out of shots he was over five this is gonna run a penalty laughs one of the things that can't happen in this event is if you don't eject if you don't pull the lever all the way back on there on the loading it'll Jam so the athletes that have been instructed how to do that and the range officials will come in and check the event but they don't want to give anybody an advantage if they did something wrong on the bolt in action meanwhile Chris and clever goes to four five any sakamoto in the sandy portion season two four five right now let's go down to room colonel Evora hey guys and Chad may know more about this you know he was talking about the 22s and they used in the Olympics but I was actually told by one of the range of fish the opposite can happen here you can double the jacket if an athlete votes - into the chamber you can actually double eject on one shot yeah that's probably what it is I'm not really familiar with this era if I have to use different era to lose a different brand and they have a different magazine so I think the action the ability to eject and do that smoothly can't affect me the competition which is unfortunate but the athletes have to figure that out as well Sam Briggs just left the shooting area she went over five Julie Foucher is over five so the standing portion giving people a lot of problems I was talking to any Sakamoto after her practice registers I felt great when I was when I was prone and then I stood up I said who put me on a boat but the problem we're seeing here is the wind is really affecting standing like like no heat we've seen yet the wind is worse for standing than anybody anybody else it's reflected in the shooting scores lots of red red misses for the athletes on this shooting season it's really unfortunate the wind picked up this way and it's not even just win like it there have been gusts of wind but just in that last 30 seconds so there was a large dust that actually blew through so that's gonna change you know how they seen the targets what are they looking at how much you know how much is that gonna deflect the pellet as it shoots out of the gun it shouldn't affect them as much in the prone position they're lower to the ground they have a much more solid hole but this happens in winter baths on all the time athletes will lose a limpid gold medal because they got a gust to win when they're in the shooting range in it's it's unfortunate but that's part of the sport it's an outdoor sport and that's they're getting the that bullet path on experience today any Sakamoto is now your leader she is on her third of four skis and Christian Kleber currently sits in second place back of white Miller is in third and Tonya Wagner is in fourth sakamoto leading largely because her most those three shots she hit from the standing position that is a huge advantage for her now she goes into the final two urged spots and one shooting stage I love the fact she just a nice relaxing week we talked about picking a particular cadence knowing one that you're gonna be able to be able to recover from easily and she's doing exactly that here this is the fight for the lead between Annie Sakamoto and Chris and clever meanwhile Tonya Wagner without her headphones powder headset on usually part of our broadcast team but doing us proud right now she currently sits in fourth place solid shooting the film that she hit four out of five from the first one in really almost everybody having trouble except Sakamoto in the standing so you know the standing is almost gravy for everybody but Sakamoto she's the only one that really pulled off anything of any significance and that's why she's got this huge lead Kristi Phillips Adkins is on her standing shoot right now Tonya's continuing to crank through here thirty calories then it's back to the rifle for five shots from the prone position each round is worth eight repetitions I wish Tonya would just open up a little bit more with those arms get a little bit taller a little bit more length on those cables and she might be getting just a little bit a little bit tired a little bit fatigued so the technique breaks down a little bit yeah that happens in skiing as well yeah these black takes us to build the heart rates going up Dani Sakamoto is done and we'll get set for her final shoot she was really proficient the first time she was in the pro position and this will be the final time she's on the rifle she's gonna be happy it's not standing as Michelle amen we just pick back up if you're not hearing that no mics we're trying to hang on to our paper up here in the booth but it is whipping around Sakamoto walks in on the first target as does Rebekah point Miller Sakamoto it's her first shot that's the hard thing about the wind to is it takes you out of your kit it's very hard to get into good cadence because the winds messing with you a little bit now 2 for 2 for Annie Sakamoto 3 for 3 watch that breathe you prepped with nice breath in comes down and that's what you take the shots you ride on that tempo or in a row for Annie five for fatty Sakamoto roasty remains that was great 12 hits in a windy shooting range she had the toughest shooting of any any group this this so far today so cuz it'll walk away with 12 hits in this kind of wind spectacular performance for Sakamoto really composed meanwhile Beck avoid Miller has got a good string going she's 3 for 3 on her final shoot she's on the left of the screen now 4 for 4 and Kristin clever starts off with a hit as well Danny really wants to get some distance between her and Becca Becca can really really put a lot of power into the into that skeered so whatever distance he can get it's gonna be huge Rebecca boy Miller is perfect 5 for 5 she's back on the ERG now in second place behind Auntie Sakamoto what Miller had the had the prone figured out which missed one of 10 punch after this all five were standing that's the difference maker between her and Annie Sakamoto and Kristin clever five four five Tonya Wagner meanwhile is three for four with one shot remaining all these athletes really turning it around after a very difficult and he said you talk about that mental that positive mental talk so they did a great job of bouncing back Latanya Wagner she hits four of five shots at one penalty lap for the 2009 CrossFit Games champion two misses for Briggs I know Tonya would love to say she beat Samantha Briggs John you may go home after this I am done I beat Samantha Briggs I'm outta here Samantha Briggs a five-hit performance out of 15 shots and that's why she's buried in the results so to speak coming up one 90 seconds ago before we hit the time gap and Auntie Sakamoto is off and Annie Sakamoto is going to win the legends back at the one good for her great shooting performance really would like I like all the winners we've seen the smoothest performer performers on the winners back with white Miller looking to lock up second place if she will get in inside the 15-minute time gap Kristen clever the leader leader on the field right now in third is she and Tonya Wagner hat with now 60 seconds to go to finish up their final 30 calories ski now 45 seconds before we hit the time cap Kristin clevers judges hand is in the air she is just about done with her final final ten calories man that brings clubbers done if she's like oh wait I had a run Briggs temple is amazing right now totally turning it over trying to catch back up and clever is in and you want to talk about three women who helped lay the foundation for the sport Annie Sakamoto Kristin clever and Becca Voight Miller all finishing this event and now Samantha Briggs is trying to catch up with Tonya Wagner this one's probably to come down to the final calorie count John you ready to Joe it's a blanket of Tanya not Tonya at ease we hit the time jab still to get that close to Samantha that's impressive for our colleague Tonya Wagner really proud of her and really proud of all the legends I was a great show and Chrissy Phillips Atkins congratulating Tonya Wagner Bank of Hawaii Miller over there but how about aunty Sakamoto that was I was pretty amazing I mean if you if you think about the fact that we have this skier an element in there you wouldn't pick the shortest athlete to do the best in that not gonna happen but you talked about positive Saab we talked about what confidence does we know that she has that the fact that she was able to get I mean right right out of it right now the surf Mecca boy Miller great on the skis confident on this shot until she got to the standing when she got that standing she had all kinds of problem that broke down for there but that's what Annie really picked it up I mean yeah we talked about that special number of 12 if you can hit 12 o'clock you're gonna do well she hit 12 overall and had a successful raid and that's what's great about the support of a pond in winter by foot and this plant on as well as it is you're seeing the great equalizer on the shooting range athletes who wouldn't expect to beat another athlete in that sport in cross-country skiing and most of it by athletes wouldn't normally beat certain athletes in the field and just a cross-country ski race but a great equalizer is are you a good shooter and and that's why any cycle moto got the win today in this cross that she was a CrossFit event because of the her great shooting performance and that's what makes it so fast it's a compelling sport Danny Sakamoto with the event win 13 minutes thirty point four zero seconds as she is all smiles as she crosses the finish line is going to be back of Wade Miller who finishes second Christie clevers and third and Sam Briggs just edges Tanya Wagoner by one rep I know nothing in the history between these athletes but I saw I was able to figure out that Tanya waiting to really wanted to beat Sam Briggs at the end of that event everybody wants to beat Sam Briggs have any sakamoto did beat Sam Briggs and she is with Rory Recurly he's some sharp shooting there for an event win but you said you didn't actually practice as much Weiser who may think tell me how you prepared I just didn't want to know how bad I thought I was gonna be at the shooting I thought it would get in my head so I consciously chose to not practice I guess it paid off apparently yeah so everybody can take something from that part of this legends competition is reminiscing so this is a unique event I want to know your favorite CrossFit Games event that you've competed in I would have to say it was a triathlon in the 2012 games I love a good ocean swim so that was a great way to start the games the bike was just a ton of fun and then there was so much camaraderie on that run run was treacherous it's probably one of the worst runs I've ever done in my life but the way everybody rallied together and ran together and it wasn't a competition against each other but just against the clock and that was a really special moment thank you for sharing thank you for and congratulations on your event win Annie Sakamoto here are your legends of standings now after three events Samantha Briggs with two hundred and seventy two points Becca Boyd Miller twelve points back her ne Sakamoto courtesy of that one event win moves in in third place by just six points the women's legends are done the men's legends coming up next it will happen for you when we return to the 2019 broke Invitational the second and final day of competition here in the 2019 rogue Invitational at rogue Fitness headquarters in Columbus Ohio thanks for being with us here today everybody the third event for the legends on the men's side is up next it is the biathlon and here's where we stand after two events yesterday it's Dan Bailey with an 18 point lead over the 2010 CrossFit Games champion Graham Holmberg jason khalipa the 2008 champion sits in third and it's chris spealler who is in fourth place the biathlon skiing and shooting and it's the shooting that has made the big difference here it's been a massive learning curve for all these athletes in it in a confidence curve I think just like we heard any say I didn't win no how about gonna do who's gonna get my head if it gets in your head you do terrible if you have a good ring if you have a good good shot you have fun we are joined in the booth by a former US national biathlon team member and the man who did the outstanding color commentary for the biathlon Olympics coverage of Pyeongchang Winter Games Chad Sawa Chad thanks so much for being here it's been a blast having yet what's impress you so far with what you've seen well I think the way the athletes have adapted to this new format the way they've approached the shooting the the performances are really blowing me away I think it's really amazing how quickly these athletes have adapted to something renu-it and it's really not something that's in their repertoire here are your lane assignments for the legends men Dan Bailey your overall leader will be in lane number three the 2008 champion jason khalipa will be in lane five jason khalipa let's hope that he shoots better than he throws for those of you who watch the 2011 Reebok CrossFit Games remember the infamous softball toss and accuracy definitely not his forte in that event well I think you've decided to throw this left hand it had to have been the case we are underway and we know that Jason is just going to demolish the skier well one thing we've seen in all the heats is that the people who have gone out a little too hard on the first skier have struggled in the shooting people come back start a little bit under control make sure that they're not going nuts at the start and then have the composure to hit those first four or five prone shots those are the ones who go on and have that momentum built to take the win to the heat and Jason is a he's a big guys got a lot of weight so the fact that he's really using his body trying to drive those handles down that's gonna be huge for them forty calories on skeered for the men there are nine repetitions in every round as we take a look at Josh Everett who there are a lot of people in this arena right now I'm probably watching at home don't know who this guy is and if you don't you need to learn who this guy is he is he was the one of the blueprints but if you thought you were a good crossfitter you looked at what his scores were than the way they did it back in the old days where you looked on the old crossfit comm website and that's where the workouts were so I know for myself I lined up a lot of power my workouts world what did he do what should I be doing and I'm I am thrilled that they have him out here just out on the floor it's huge I don't know Josh effort at all but I met him earlier today at the at the practice range and he got into a position that I said this guy's got no chance at success he hits five four five stands I guess I stand corrected so Josh Everett but that's what he does though in a in a lot of movements he makes it work for him and I think that's that's the way the oil the old-school competitive CrossFitters world we did that like in like Matt chance' that's no there wasn't a blueprint they made it up and they went and that's it what he does that's what's cool about the legends category kind of capped the name to me as an outsider the word legend kind of captures that spirit at Graham Holmberg at Tommy hackenbruck or on to the first round of shooting it is windy here and Rory mckernon has more on that it's on down here on the field I'd love to give you a visual of it but there's probably enough in the background there things are blowing really really hard it shouldn't matter as much on the throne as Chad mentioned but when they stood up I asked some of the range officers what they thought and they said you know it's gonna be more mental and it's gonna affect body position not the right width itself obviously it's not a long distance and the actual pellet that's coming out of the gun it's got enough mass but it's not really gonna affect its path it's more about body position when they're standing up and the mental aspects that's absolutely right I don't think that there's nothing affecting the trajectory of the propeller it's really about can they hold the barrel steady enough to have a confidence to squeak even squeeze out the trigger because that black dots dancing around out there in the wind the Tommy hackenbruck went four for five he has one penalty lap grande Holberg three four five jason khalipa three four five as well Matt Chan four four five Josh Everett is on his first shoot and he misses his first shot Dan Bailey meanwhile misses his first three then hits his four chris spealler is a perfect fourth before on his fifth and final shot and Spieler will go five four five and immediately get back to the earth he is now your leader we know it he showed his some of the training that he did back at home II couldn't get his hands on the air gun so we just started using some of his kids nerf guns no and he lives in Park City so they got this little part down there got a scheme down and it's all about that nerf gun well a lot of the best my athletes attempt ranges outside of Park City at the Olympic site just over the valley in Hebrew valiant soldier Hollow a lot of these athletes who are range officials you make a lot of a big part of their season training out by Park City yeah Chris wheeler currently in second place now as Tommy hackenbruck was able to complete his penalty laps and get back to the earth quickly Matt Chan in second place as spealler has dropped to third in a match and was second at the CrossFit Games in 2012 Chris Miller is in that top three largely on the back of a great shooting performance but he took a lot of time both in the first earth round and to take the shot so he gave away a lot of that time but it's good thing Kevin or wouldn't be near the front well yet the figure the two guys are just sitting in the front Tommy hackenbruck and Matt ten big guys so they're gonna pit they're gonna put a lot of calories per hour on that skier so they're really up there I mean that was that's always been the case with with Chris peeler he that's where he's at the disadvantage here that's why we called the Giant Killer because he was always to go able to go toe to toe with any of these big guys you know but in this he just just mechanical advantage doesn't have the advantage neck of those guys but he still doesn't work Tommy hackenbruck is your leader not only is does he have a great pedigree as far as the CrossFit Games are concerned he also played linebacker the University of Utah had three sacks in the 2005 Fiesta Bowl in Utah he hit 35 to 7 and then in high school he was the 1999 Oregon State offensive player at the year at Mountain View High School wind is really calm right now he wants to squeeze these shots off before the wind picks up again try to just get one or two of them down and that would be a great day on the shooting range was standing when this wind misses his first two and hits his third but look at the speed he's throwing one of five so for penalty laughs so it looks like he's just gonna go speed over technique here just try to get through these penalty laps then try to get back up ruining them all well you've got the figure ok how did that first set go you know he didn't have a Miss in the prone so he knew that it like alright if it's not gonna be super successful fine I'm just gonna get it off I already know I'm in front of everybody right no one went really I'm broken except for Chris been able to get that so Matt Chan two for two standing right now this is the problem Matt Chan just hit two and he keeps going Hackenberg is gonna be in big trouble Kohlberg hit his first chance Brees Matt Chan putting on a clinic here calm shooting range taking advantage of it first Miss for chance of three for four right now home birds two for three the Chan goes 3 4 5 which in this portion of the event for these athletes that's a great solid that's his holiday the only missed one Peyronie's got two here he's gonna make up a lot of time on hacking Brooke hit in this penalty loop and it should be pretty close to even by the time they go back to the earth and Spieler goes three four five so he will have to penalty laps Hackett Brooke is done with his penalty laughs the Hackett Brooke stays in the lead he is back for his third of four skis at 40 calories and that right there that's that trade-off of okay if I don't feel solid I'm just gonna knock him off and I'm gonna go do run that out let everyone else take all their time did you hold that if you told me that plate you have if you had taken 30 more seconds to have the same shooting score he'd be in second place ready yep chan back on the earth back at Brooks his first chance a second Ram Hulbert who sits in third places of the three men on their starting a third round right now through these forty calories that go back to five more shots with a broken engine still two shooters Evert trying to hit standing shots at he was this morning but he's only one for three so Everett now made his first shot misses next to is the hacking brook and Chan battle for the lead a chance double core motion he's imagination high comes high with his hips and there's Josh Everett and that is not to technique time is so surprises honey if he went to four five so not bad solid for Josh Everett bring his alma mater 'he's t-shirt he played football at Ohio Northern University also ran track and field Tommy hackenbruck leader through 21 of the 31 reps as we are past the halfway point of this event Matt chin right on his heels though she well look how hard he's pulling he's put all kinds of power into that that's here that's Dan Bailey who's your overall leader coming into this event working on his three penalty laps that he was hit with after missing three shots on his last shoot Chen now moving ahead of Tommy hackenbruck on the earth and pulling away but you gotta wonder is it too much as he's spending too much energy before that final shooting stage Matt Chan goes to the shooting range first one there for the third time here comes Tommy hackenbruck right behind Matt chin it's gonna come down to this final shoot Chan almost has his chin on the ground gets a hit though jack and Brooke with his for a shot two to four to hack and Brooke is missed a kibrik misses his third chance still perfect the hack and Brooke goes for a 5s probably gonna do it for him he's got four penalty left Matt Chan is in the driver's seat right now 5-foot line and back to the skeered for the man who finished second at the 2012 Reebok CrossFit Games 12 for 15 Matt Chan that's the magic number David's daughter hit 13 she's the best shooter on the day absolutely dominant fashion the women's but matt chen matching everybody else he won their heat and really good to meet by matt chant on the herb little bit of rocking action and looks very energizer and I you know he's done yeah he's psyched meanwhile Graham Goldberg goes 3 4 5 on his final round home brew the 2010 CrossFit Games champion back to Matt Shan these athletes have faced everything a normal violet would have to face except with cold and snow they're doing with the heat but the wind has definitely been a part of the pink part of the event especially the final three heats jason khalipa on the chute breathing pretty heavily here but three or four liebe three of five on his final prone shoes match and meanwhile is creeping closer to finishing up his egg which is ten calories to go something is a little bit better than than the softball toss I would say so that is not hard Matt Chan just about done as he looks to win this event and he is done and Matt Chan is off Matt Chan takes the men's legends biathlon another smooth performance just kind of kept it together wasn't the leader right out of the gates snuck into the lead by keeping the shooting performance together and a really great finish by me who's put a lot of energy into that finish this is down the battle for second place Graham Holmberg is leading but jason khalipa on the left and chris spealler on the right are trying to catch him they are both on their final T's as is that man Tommy hackenbruck who led this competition until that final shoot I can Brook started great four out of five within missed only hit one shot to the last two shooting stings and that's why he trails and I think you know the the strategy of o-chem he's gonna try pop these off right on the standing fine I get but I think he tried to use the exact same standing or the exact same strategy in the prone and I he just needed to take a couple more seconds yeah it's very easy to kind of unwind and lose your train of thought lose your momentum in a sport of biathlon anybody who's done this sport the winter support knows that you can have a good race going and let it let it get away from its more common than not so a Hackenberg got a really good taste of that today and Matt Chan beat Rasmus Anderson wow that's that's amazing experience will always be youthful skill always wiser much wiser smarter better cool you know he'd beaten by a lot 14 seconds it looks like was in a 1049 I think was Rasmus Anderson's time the Graham Holmberg is done and Homer will lock up second place great result for the 2010 prostate Games champion chris spealler and jason khalipa fighting for third place dad Bailey's on the right ear screen he's pulling for all he's worth Khalifa is done and he will love her his way over the finish line the Jason Khalifa gets in inside the 15-minute time cap chris spealler trying to hold out Tommy hackenbruck and he will do so so chris spealler will get in well inside the 15-minute time gap now Tommy hackenbruck is done and we said it would come down to the shooting and it did is that cos Tommy Hackett wrote the event win it you see that trajectory all the time somebody out to the early lead coming in at the tail end of the pack it happens every week I call the sport every week all winter long and you see it every day just because you start first doesn't mean you're gonna end there that's right Dan Bailey closing at his final ski and he is tested I just wager that thing there now he's finished and it's a race with Mika Salo and Mika Salo the other end of the field just edging out Dan Bailey across the finish line and that leaves Josh Everett as the last man on the field but josh is also on his final speed the most famous piece of video on josh everett is from the deadlift ladder back in 2009 at the ranch he pulled a pretty big lift and then got extremely fired up right in the fingers of his judge less than 30 seconds to go before we hit the time gap [Music] [Applause] 10 seconds to go for Josh every and that will do it so Josh ever the only legend not to finish this to bend inside the 15 minute time cap Matt Chan meanwhile had the best individual time that we've seen today way to go firefighter not bad a shooting gun ten thirty five point two seven seconds format sham who wins this thing with the rifle you know me and we always had the question of alright my strategy should I just try to get these off as fast as I can or not we saw Tommy and Matt going head-to-head that first round basically even Matt chance took a little bit more time when I went unbroken got all the targets autonomous one then that bit swapping that second round where they were standing Tommy chose to just try do whatever it could and went super fast missed all but one where as Matt Chan got all but one and you can just tell the confidence is rose that he's able to hold on to that computron to do something at the end didn't work out for fit Matt Chan woo now you really want to just keep it keep it in your lane I think Matt Chan would focused on himself a little bit more than the results hanging but start thinking about results and got in trouble Matt Chan with a time of ten thirty five point two seven seconds six the event win Graham Holmberg finish the second jason khalipa will take third for Spieler and Tommy hackenbruck rounding out the top five was sent to the Rory mcurtin with Matt Chan Matt I know that you are a marksman with a bow I know that you get plenty of time on the slopes but do you get to the gun range often how did you do so well yeah I shoot a rifle from time to time and definitely some of the things I've learned some from friends have really helped out on this event the big thing was I slowed down at the end of every one of the skiers and gave myself some recovery time so I could be just a little steadier and the wind played a little bit of effect but competition did too so and since we last saw you on the competition floor you've made life changes you also had an injury that was more than just potentially career-ending it was almost life-threatening so in light of that how does it feel to come across this finish line and see this crowd cheering for you yeah I'm not gonna make excuses my fitness level is going down but yeah it feels great to be out here competing with my buddies and again and put all these guys that's really it's just an inspiring and I feel blessed to be able to be out here so thank you the Canadian Bill for having me thank you you guys for having us and be great fans for the rest of the weekend well you say your fitness levels going down what would you say to me telling you that yours is the best time out of any individual who did this today including Rasmus Anderson I tell you you're out of your mind it's true oh thank you he's a gentleman matched in patch and humble as always takes the event for the legends and would have won the individual competition as well so not bad here's where we stand now after Yvette's Graham Holmberg still in the lead or actually taking the lead from Dan Bailey jason khalipa sits in third Matt Chan was the event wind moves up the porch and his chris spealler in fifth chad sambala want to thank you for joining us here in the booth it was an absolute blast my friend that was a lot of fun hey my pleasure I'm back any time he'd do this again I would love to be here I hope we do it again because that was a fun event to watch a lot more action to come today the individuals and legends are done for now we're gonna hand it back over the teams quick break we'll be back with more from the 2019 of rogue Invitational in Columbus Ohio [Music]
