So what we got. Victor Blaise runs it down and that's a a national better than forty one thousand have been waiting all day for this moment postseason baseball in our nation's capital and it begins once again in a must win situation. The National League wild card game it's presented by hand could tire as we watch the Milwaukee Brewers take on the Washington Nationals. Good evening everybody welcome to Washington I'm Ernie Johnson. This is World Series champion Ron Darling. And this is the newest member of the TBD family Jeff friend core who played 12 seasons 13 postseason games won a Gold Glove doesn't get to speak yet because we're going to Ron Darling first how these teams got here. Let's start with Washington they had to dig themselves out of a big league hole you know they thought their season was over in mid-May. Davey Martinez's team though right the ship finished 74 and 38. Why. starting pitching. They also have two great young hitters Rendon an MVP candidate. And so that one of the best their bullpen has been a concern all year long but they've not scored they're both and that's why they're here tonight. Max Scherzer gets the ball tonight for Washington as great as he has been. He has not won a postseason game for the Nationals. He's looking for a signature start tonight. Brandon Woodroof an All-Star for the Brewers but an oblique lately. bathroom break. Council who has an unorthodox approach to this game of baseball. Enough credit what he's done this year has really held this team together. He's going to go out to the mound a lot tonight. He's going to play matchups with this baseball team. Chris in knowledge goes down there MVP. Chris in knowledge goes down You talk about Lorenzo Cain might move stock is run by now they've stepped up for 20 And you know they want to get the ball to this guy for the And you know they want to get send them to Los Angeles for the NLD s Frenchie It is great to have you with us here on CBS. As always this time of year injuries are a major concern. The fourth member of our crew is Lauren Shehadeh. Lauren what's the latest on the bumps and bruises on these two teams. Any news all the way around. It's not right and wrong and range of pain in the bases yesterday practicing this he said a lot would have to go wrong for me not to start in that game all in the lineup along with like stocky shoes elbow injuries to square one. Yes well he's funny said caring for an old guy I pretty darn good. Zero pain when I throw down to second base much to the delight of Max Scherzer he's VRA is two full runs lower with Suzuki behind the plate but gentlemen general consensus here after grind of 162. Your bones aren't broken. You go and you're playing Lauren jihadi. Thank you very much. Well wherever you're watching us tonight I have a feeling there are a few TV sets turned on in the Los Angeles area where the Dodgers await the winner of this one. It's wild card night and it's next. First pitch coming up the MLB postseason on CBS is brought to you by hand. Could Tiger chase down your passion never halfway by Geico. 15 minutes can save you 15 percent or more on car insurance by Chevy Chevy has earned J.D. Power quality awards across cars trucks and SUV. And by Taco Bell we welcome you back to Nationals Park here in Washington as the Mets take the field on an eighty three degree evening should be a great night for baseball as we get the postseason. for baseball as we get the on PBS take a look at tonight's batting order presented by hand cook. Tired. This is the order that will face Max Scherzer great council sends out Trent Grisham the rookie to hit lead off goals money Randolph had a tremendous season then it's like new stock is cast and hero hits clean up well veteran Ryan Braun Eric fame's who's hit balls that haven't come down yet Lorenzo Cain and center Orlando Arsenio the shortstop Brandon WOODRUFF Does the pitching for Milwaukee well for the first time in his career Matt Scherzer had an injury riddled year missed about five starts his last seven starts have not been good eight home runs given up in 38 innings pitched. But talking with him yesterday he said he is good to go and good for one hundred and twenty quality pitchers. Yeah. Catch him. Yeah. behind the plate. Yeah. together this year really have a good friendship and relationship back there done a good job going around the infield. Anthony Rendon MVP candidate over their third base. Turner Cabrera Kendrick and first base get to start tonight the outfield you got Soto Robles rolling around Eaton and Robles guys Dave Martinez says he will win a gold glove at some point has a tremendous arm and the only thing better than that is his energy and you could see him firing up the crowd out there in right center field we are ready to play ball as you look at Dave Martinez and that's been the key words for Dave Martinez stay in the fight. He first spoke in July to this team and it was the first thing out of his mouth when they clinched a playoff spot. How about this game face. Well Trent Grisham stands in against Max Scherzer first pitch outside some rarefied air for Trent Grisham rookie hitting lead off in a playoff game and a guy who struggles at the plate didn't even earn him a trip to the big camp in spring training 60 players invited. He was not one of them but he played a lot for Craig council in those spring training games and impressed. We had a chance to talk to him today he said. That was the big thing guys was he really was that guy that you That was the big thing guys was breakout year crushing double or triple A came up August 1st and all he's done is two and two heads the breaking pitch at him fooled one of the hardest pitch to throw early in the game when you have this kind of the javelin adrenaline going. Is that a hard Snapdragon first strike. Is that a hard Snapdragon first strikes here calls Scherzer wanted that but he wasn't getting it from Mike Everett the home plate umpire. Mike Everett umpire that usually has one of the largest strike zones in the majors. I don't know if I'd be taking that pitch again right here through to payoff pitch to the leadoff hitter missed no one away. And the brewers have their lead off hitter on well he did take it off. So Dave Martinez go to the phone right there I guarantee you wonder where are those pitchers Scherzer in his 27 starts has allowed two walks or fewer twenty five times. He walks the leadoff hitter here and here's Joe's money ground ball. The switch hitting catcher Tom Wright and will hit that ball is out of here a first inning to run shot by Rondo the first pitch he saw from Scherzer goes over the wall in right and they are starting to here in D.C. Randolph signed a one year deal here and he has been arguably besides its best player one for 16 guys career officers are coming in tonight. That one was worth every penny. Certainly got behind the first hitter Gresham. He did not want to get behind Randolph. He came to him. With the two run bomb here's Mike moose Dorcas his wild card games are always unpredictable some have really been wild and as you get another look at run dolls to run homer that thing clears the wall. Dorcas was part of that with the Kansas City Royals in that win over the Oakland A's when they were trailing John Lester late in the game and then rallied to win it next ratings. He and Lorenzo Cain were both on that team so Serbs are now in his last thirty eight innings pitched has given up nine home runs all of them to left handed hitters Ron Dahl had been one for 16 with nine strikeouts in his career against Scherzer and they took him for a first inning Ride 3 2 in the air to left Soto over and makes the that's the big out for sure for right there there's just something to calm down guys 2 to 3 to start the game really close. What's the next pitch to run homer. The game started quick on him but he's got to find a way to calm himself down. Ronnie how did you do that. You've had the ball on nights The blood is pumping and the you channel that adrenaline in that excitement. That's the battle the battle is that you know you've got to come out if your match shows the that you know you've got to come sometimes you have so much adrenaline that even though you're throwing that hard the ball is on a line it's going as straight as it's true and it makes it easier to hit a ball down low to Kasten Hera just twenty three years old he was the Brewers top prospect and kid could really hit in college led the nation at four forty two at Cal Irvine and he's been raking in the big leagues to comes up empty their he's been a huge addition to this lineup especially with the college going down a guy that has stepped up and really been a big bat in the middle of that lineup. One ball two strikes Scherzer to the plate and he struck a that's what the crowd needed. Scherzer to show that he has his good stuff tonight. Randall jumped him but we talked about in the open starting 19 and thirty one You didn't think this was gonna be easy for the Here's Ryan Braun on the ground a third Rendon throws him out. But some first inning damage done no money round all Yanks one over the wall and right Brewers on top. Tonight's batting order is presented by a hand tire tray. Turner leads it off followed by Adam Eaton Anthony Rendon the most unassuming superstar in baseball hits Third than it's Soto Kendrick Cabrera Suzuki Robles san. Max Scherzer Brandon Woodruff's delivers high at ninety nine. Want to know what just got a big arm. left oblique injury so he pitched twice since then two starts of two innings apiece and has always pitched well against the Nationals. Two no eighteen two thirds innings twenty three punch ups or strike one. Thompson is twenty six years old and drafted by the Brewers back in 2014 and 11th round pick his starts. Game 1 of these playoffs the wild card game in the National League and RCA throws out Turner for the first down catch catching Woodruff tonight as mighty grand doll. He just hit the big home run having a great year this year round out over 30 stocks RCA here at games at first base Braun Kane and Gresham in the outfield and guys Kane has done a great job of making plays and instincts one of the best in the game. But this is a team that's a little bit hurt right now and struggling defensively. Here's Adam meeting like more stock of sit on the grass at third as he takes up high seen the stocks in our third base trying to take away any thought of eaten trying to drag a bunt and if he thought about it over for a strike wanted if there was any doubt Woodruff's feel good he's done ninety nine tonight too. I don't think that WikiLeaks hurt him at all. WOODRUFF started the season eighty one. the Braves on July 16th. He was eleven and three but only three starts. He was eleven and three but only that old bleak injury but only when he pitches the Brewers win 22 starts this year. Pros are 18 and for those 20 to start two balls two strikes and here it comes even works the counts for that guy waiting on Derek and Laura's strikeout number one for the Brewers right hander to straight to 100 mile an hour fastballs from Woodruff though as his as pumped. That's Scherzer that didn't work. blew it right by him beat him to the spot. This late swing there by Eaton Yeah the old phrase threw it right past him comes to mind they're two down now and here's Rendon they scream MVP here in D.C. and for good reason Three nineteen average was third in the National League his one hundred and twenty six RBI is number one hit thirty four home runs great glove man think when you really watch Rendon don't to wait and see those numbers are bad for me what's so impressive for slowest lowest swing in this race and all of Major League power hitter a guy that does what he does it's really good. Almost looked like this at bat he was taking the strike just wanted to kind of measure the stuff that Woodruff has on his fastball today and just to put a number on that stat you threw out there so 5.5 percent swing and miss he pops this one up in the infield it defames squeezes it and that is a one two three. Bottom of the First World Woodruff we head to the second in D.C. Max Scherzer is last postseason appearance was forgettable twenty seventeen and LDS against the Cubs memory came on and relief and Addison Russell double for a couple of rungs he had a pitcher's interference in there had a it just went terribly south after he retired the first two hitters checked all the bad boxes and had any and he came out tonight and gave up a two run homer in the top half of the first two years Monique Randle and this is Eric fame's who launches to right center field and the Brewers have up three nothing lead the people here are stunned that one was off a pagan break from Max again 10th home run now given up since it came two left handed hitters fans got it out he's so strong that all he had to do is flip it and that right center field which is at this place that's where the ball carries Lorenzo Cain swings with the first pitch and rounds it to Rendon through wide but the tag applied by how he tendered for Round Number one I laugh when you say things is so strong he might be the strongest but played by Kendrick yeah got him on the leg it's always a tough decision for the first base one to come off the bag and make that tag first pitch swinging is Orlando Garcia who dumps one into right field so we're seeing a little theme here aren't we early. We are seeing the theme of the Brewers are coming out hacking. They are being aggressive. Karen Dahl who very rarely swings at the first pitch 109 nine walks this year jumped him on the first pitch. Well this is this is a team known for working counts. They threw it all out the window. And you look guys Brian 0 for 14 coming in this game Kane 0 for 15 grand all before that Homer won for 16. That's why Scherzer is out there right now. He's had success against the Here's what rush through squares and then takes outside. This is how the Brewers score over 50 percent of their runs come via the homerun. And like you said themes almost one handed hits it out Woodruff squares again and lays this one down. The play will be the first Garcia moves to second to down extremely disappointing for Woodruff I know it. Mission accomplished he did his job there but the guy loves to hit. He really does. But he was up there in a situation where you've got to get the runner over. And he did his job well. three early runs here. Sophia Cregg council you just trying to put Schroeder in a position where maybe you could get lucky not get another one two outs break his back back to the top of the order now for the Brewers as we play here in the top half of the second and Trent Christian stands in walked his first time Christian who has such an unusual grip on the bad Frenchie he has those two thumbs kind of running up the bat like golf grip definite unorthodox you don't see that he hit like that in high school changed it when he got to the Brewers minor league system could you see yourself me friendship I talked to him could you see yourself doing that at the plate. I don't see how he has a power yes and to whipping through the zone is unbelievable. But listen for three years he didn't really do anything as you said Ernie. He didn't get invited to camp. He said I'm going back to doing it my way. ball one strike. RC other runner at second has a huge lead and now dances back to second well you don't expect it to see it here with two outs but both of these ball clubs love the steal third base Milwaukee twenty two times this year the Nationals 80 Scherzer trying to get out of this city without any further damage. Another run crosses for Milwaukee. Eric claims solo homer three zip play ball as MLB is initiative to inspire all forms of baseball and softball participation making play opportunities available and fun for everybody. The binder Youth Organization near you go to play ball dot org and follow at play ball on Twitter Facebook and Instagram. Well guys what did you think was going to happen this year six thousand seven hundred and seventy six home runs the most ever in the history of the game and this game starts out with a couple of bombs. We showed you those two guys Here's the thing too when you look at the Brewers stats for Here's the thing too when you runs than they did last year but their league ranked drop. How does that happen. Second last year third this year. Here's one Sodo for the pitchers in the postseason this year the theme might be rub up a new one. Well like Max. Listen he got it out front. He didn't hit it hard. with that there's gonna be some balls that are gonna go out of his past but aren't hiccup. How do you come back from it. Soto the 20 year old clean up hitter wouldn't fight there. Milwaukee now has 13 home runs the last three games they've played here at Nationals Park and the last time these two played here at Nationals Park The score was 16 to 18 so what you're trying to say is don't go anywhere it's three nothing. The count is two and to make in between. Soto had a huge August struggled in September but he said he was Soto had a huge August struggled to pull the ball. Soto had a huge August struggled trying to go to left field one of the best opposite field hitters in all the baseball he waits on a tutu from Woodruff. Here it comes. Went upstairs and got him so I can strike out for Woodruff out of the circle that's twice now that Woodruff has gone up in the of the circle that's twice now Soto to strike them out. He's got a ton of movement and we know he's throwing 99 100 miles an hour that's a pitch that we know we're just not going to be in the game long. But the Nationals aren't gonna do any damage for swinging at that pitch. Here's how he Kendrick Kendrick. The guy that Mike Scotia his old manager with the angels called truck and he is a professional hitter folks quickly behind 1 to make up Zimmerman who's been majority of their first baseman and as we've seen the last 10 years but kindergarten for 40 since June July 28. We're talking to Dave Martinez today. He said I'm playing him. There was no discussion on that. This guy has to be in my lineup. No balls two strikes and again he elevates Kendrick fouls it off no room over there for fame's you know it's interesting about the defensive lineman for the Milwaukee Brewers because Woodruff throws so hard look at the third baseman move stocks off the line a good 30 feet 0 2 on the ground and slept in the well for the first Nationals hit the night it comes with one down here in the bottom half of the second great swing at hit right there might relax the lineup a little bit he said the reason he's in this game he's a consummate professional he knows how to hit doesn't panic look like it's a fastball short and quick to the ball he knows he has to be ninety nine come in that brings up the switch hitting as dribble cup era released by Texas came to Washington early August and has been a catalyst thirty eight games with the Nats three twenty three went deep six times knocked him 40 runs had more walks than strikeouts some great years in Cleveland you can put him in the same boat as Kanter years in Cleveland you can put hitter why these two guys are in the lineup Dave Martinez say today Nats manager I want this guy up with runners in scoring He puts the ball in play a lot. He's going to have a professional at bat and he's got experience. He's been in the postseason. It had to be hard to make up this lineup though because Brian Dozier had good numbers against Woodruff Peralta. Rocco Parra had good numbers against we'll just take a bear for 12 with runners in scoring position here in Washington hits 40 RBI and 38 games restock US moves across the infield as they shift a little late timeout called there by Mike Everett I've always thought there's a correlation between how many years you have in the Major Leagues and how you get that call time. So you're seeing the stock is starting third baseman is now in shallow right here or the second baseman shaded toward the bag. Ah so you're the only one on the left side and he just did stay alive. Here's our T-Mobile extended coverage as you get a look at how we Kendrick with his dribble Cabrera at the plate one out in the dirt Ron Paul did a great job keeping Batman from he has money. couple of seasons as the catcher for the Los Angeles Dodgers for these kinds of pitches and his ability to block them but textbook right there by Randolph getting the guys on the coaching staff he's in there for four hours a day watching film first guy at the field. I think after what happened last year he took it a little bit personally. tapped first but fell into the hands of Tim Bogart National's first base coach who lobs that one over the protective netting Tim Bogart who's been mentioned by several teams now that are looking for a new manager that he's going to be one of the candidates. So I do love about Nationals Park here it's one of two of the bigs with the protective netting all the way down on both the right and left field sides keep things as safe as possible for fans here in D.C. they can move pretty good on that right there I know it was a high fly ball but that's something guys to watch as the game goes on. How is he going to be on that ankle. ask Lorenzo Cain these days is anything not hurting Drug Council the manager said we asked him when he knew Lorenzo Cain was ready to go. He said once we kind of pushed him out on the field once he got He said once we kind of pushed better left me a left ankle from his side he anchors that outfield defense for the Milwaukee Brewers. Here's Kurtz's Whoopi deep laugh back toward Van Gogh and caught by Ryan Braun with his back against the wall that got him on their feet. Here at Nationals Park not quite enough. This Bud's for the blues the reds and the Warriors This Bud's for the Giants the jazz and the magic this Bud's for the home team top three in D.C. He has money ground and leads it off. And again swings at the first pitch and hits it high or right but on the track there's Adam Eaton Ron Paul took Scherzer for a ride the first time got under that one twice a guy now with one hundred and nine walks during the season a guy who works the count swings at the first pitch both at bats almost goes deep there you see the wry smile as he got back to the dugout lay down a thought on might had another one Here's Mike Moore stock is he said it a patient team a team that as you said grand all if not done well in their career again cheers and you see they change it all up tonight they're coming out swinging they're going to try to get some before they get an account where they feel like they can get taken advantage of no balls one strike first affect the change we've seen from Scherzer in this game you see that pitch is one of his most effective versus left handed it it Scherzer has two strikeouts looking for number three here pitch stays inside one and two watching him early here Ron he's been up in the zone I feel like that fastball curveball hanging a little bit is that something adrenaline wise for him he's probably just trying to calm himself down yeah it's it's a simple case of kind of overthrowing early in the game blue eyes brown eyes phenomenon that is Max Scherzer they don't miss Tampa Bay in Oakland in the American League wild card game tomorrow on ESPN and ESPN Radio at 8:00 Eastern time and talk about Max's XYZ earlier this year he punted the ball into his face broke his nose and ended up with a black eye. face broke his nose and ended up this year from Max looking for his first one two three inning here in the third and Kingston hero follows it back and then went out and pitched the next day and absolutely dealt. That's right so many numbers out there these days in baseball the hard hit rate is where Kira excels 50 percent is his mark what you'd expect from a guy a hit for 42 in college to lead the nation well you've been hearing in the minor leagues about this young player for quite some time Scherzer were the 1 1 tell you what the calendar turns to October and a one to count has forty one thousand on their feet. Back to Strikeouts for Scherzer. His first one two three hit it tonight's Golden Touch is presented by writers trust the Midas touch if you're a Milwaukee fan and you thought oh there goes the season when the Christian village is looking for back to back MVP went down in Miami back again thirteen and five after the kneecap injury. Actually if you count that game it happened early in that game they went 14 to five because they won that well we heard Craig County say guy stepped up. This is a team that only had a plus three run differential all year. Those games right there plus 30. So Lorenzo OK. Michael stock has brought these guys that have relied on yet a lot this year had to step it up and they did. Victor Robles leads it off and takes upstairs one on one. Well I think if you think of the from last season he kind of carried the entire team on his back in September. Well they've had a group effort here in September for the Brewers you know as we talked to Craig Council before the game and talked about how the team really kind of got galvanized after the injury to gel action hadn't really thought much about it until last night. And he said how nice would it have been to have the election here. Scherzer. He makes things happen he stole 30 bags but unavailable. He said he even texted him and asked him if he could play today. And then he and then yell it said when he really kind of came to him that he wasn't playing. He landed last night to meet the team and he said it really hit me. I'm done for the year. And but you see him he's gonna be there all postseason with those guys Robles waiting on Woodruff and a 2 to pitch Steve. All right three call moments ago Lauren Shehadeh caught up with Brewer's manager Craig counts your guys aggressive in the counts and that was that part of the plan against shares. Yeah right handers have done a really nice job being aggressive and it's our lefties I've done the damage. Oh yes being aggressive. It's a good plan against a guy who's good as Max Scherzer did from tweak his cap on Max's catch. Yeah he's all right. I mean I think a little bit I've noticed a little bit more I mean I think a little bit I've he's all right. Appreciate it. up the middle for the second well I know you both know this phrase country hard ball. Well that's what religion is playing so far in this game. There's no there's no setting up hitters. There's no upsetting the timing. It's like Here it comes. You ready. Here it is. I think we saw him throw maybe a couple change ups to Cabrera. Other than that he said he's strong that heater trying to stay up in the zone and telling the guys to catch up to it. Here's the Nats leadoff hitter Trey Turner shattered his bat and it's all in one when he gets back to the plate. and it's all in one when he gets That his grip with the right hand because he he really lets the index finger on his right hand stay off the handle after breaking it trying to lay down a bump in the season. Yes. So what what he's done is made an adjustment. So what what he's done is made and what he does with his grip with the bat. But Turner has had to do this just because of that injury. He's altered the way he holds back that index finger lazily off the bat dough balls one strike and weekly own two and like Everett got the business end of that foul tip. And you don't see a lot of guys do that ever but Trey Turner said it's also made me realize it's also made me realize that if my hands are loose I'm put to the ball. And he says it's actually helped me in a way he's got five home And he says it's actually helped the play we talked about his Turner tried to lay down the bunt right index finger rainy night here at Nationals Park when he made that attempt. Let's check in on Mike Everett now too because the umpiring crew has all come to the plate. I didn't think it caught him in the mask. I thought it caught him in the side of the mask but he was staggered for sure as he was. And if you if you could see green Dahl's reaction And if you if you could see a certain sound when it hits the bars that the catchers know that it was a direct hit. Looks like Mike's going to shake it off. Way to go guy who's worked six league championship series in a couple of World Series walks behind the plate here in the wild card game pressure on those guys too on a night like this nowhere near with the 0 2 run down the umpires for you real quick Kerwin Danley at first Jeff Nelson the crew chief at second Corey blazer at third David rally on the left field line and Carlos Torres on the right field line and this is Carlos Torres first playoff game maybe that's why he's not throwing a slider he does not have a feel for it yet. But he certainly has a feel for number one. He knows what Turner can do. He likes that fastball and you know he's important to this team. Seventy five and forty seven with him in the lineup guys 18 and 22 without Adam it's quite a job by Turner that's falling off a pitcher's pitch 98 right on the corner. I would say it's been predominantly fastball. You don't need to use that chart. Tonight one thing you notice on this Nationals team this year the joy has returned and now it's really returned as they get on the board. And here is Adam fastball you see trying to go up a little more Turner such a good fastball hitter 98. Who needs 10 fingers and he's he's one of the rare guys in the line of who hits the high fastball to tell the sound like the sound of that one that was loud. thirty five RBI is with two outs led the National League this season that looked like the old we are the titans. As he went into the dugout meantime eaten pops it up and Garcia squeezes it for out number three for Trey. Turner gets the Nats on the board as we head to the fourth will meet again. Don't know where Don't know when we'll meet again some sunny day but 20 19 National League wild card is presented by a handcuffed tiger. Here's three Turner got one he liked from Brandon Woodruff and Homer in the top half in the bottom half of the third. Not Washington on the board. They trailed 3 1 as Ron fades and Cain will face Scherzer here in the top half of the fourth interesting so far not seeing the sharp bite on the slider from Scherzer. So far we heard a little while ago when Lorin Shehadeh was talking to Craig council asking if if Ryan Braun had maybe tweaked the calf a little bit when he made that catch and council would said it looked like he had a little bit of a kitchen is giddy up after that might hurt his calf. kitchen is giddy up after that chronic back problems for a long time. You see him wrapped up. Now he just smoked the ball and get a hit off next year's here's Eric Thain's who Homer delete off the second but the Washington Nationals are a team off the second but the But you can see by the numbers here things on the ground ball is gonna be Paul you see by that swing too I know it's a good changeup by Max but he's looking the curve ball for a home run to right center in the helicopter finish 20 frames there to play three seasons and the Korean baseball organization and was a fan favorite he goes the other way. This time and Soto against the wall can make the play fame's is at second and he will hold up their when it left the bat it looked like a routine fly ball to left it drifted and Soto couldn't hold it in. It's a ball that I think we thought was just it kept caring here but Soto right here that's a ball and catch if he gets back to the wall I know he kind of floated back there and got back there easy thinking it was a can of corn and that ball just kept going and going and he was in a bad spot it looked to me Ronnie that as he checked the wall he lost the ball momentarily and then turned around and he did the ball drifted so did he. And whenever the ball comes off the left handers bat that ball is going to just back into towards center field ball in the dirt to Cain blocked by Suzuki it's a double for fame's which should have been out Number two instead one out runner in scoring position for Cain who ground it out to third as first time breaking pitcher misses inside. Tough break for Max who he'd been getting in a little bit of a group just sat down seven guys in a row right there feel like that's another easy out step now you've got to run it second down to 0 to Lorenzo Cain on the ground a second famous will advance to third to down there is Brent Suter who is a remarkable story. Tommy John surgery last August he returns this season and has been one of the bright spots in he returns this season and has hasn't given up a run and his last 17 and the third in his pitch has Brent Suter Garcia when you see Max coming right after him right here they know Woodruff the pitchers on deck but I think we all agree if he gets on there going into the bench pinch hit. here and try to go after him suitor up in case Scherzer has the face. WOODRUFF If Cianci gets us out I think Woodruff goes one more we heard great counsel today he told us guys. Best case scenario for endings for Woodruff. to set him up. I believe it's like he said if he doesn't get up this ending I think he goes back out tries to he doesn't get up this ending I fluke for single to right his first time he's got another Milwaukee run 90 feet away and here comes the pitch again Suzuki got his body in front of that to keep fame's a third Oh and two counts you have to anticipate as a catcher that ball is gonna be in the dirt and Cincinnati perfectly place to keep that in front of him. Scherzer ought to be sitting in the dugout right now but instead has to continue to work on RCA gets him the waves the breaking pitcher they throw the first to complete the strikeout no is going to want or the third but can't score him. We head to the bottom half special moment tonight the ceremonial first pitch was thrown out by a current member of the Nationals Aaron Barrett a guy who's had Tommy John surgery who broke his arm throwing a pitch and this season returned to the big leagues that story was Joe's good for the soul. Watch it unfold. He made his return to baseball to the big leagues in Atlanta and was in tears he got the crowd all fired up tonight threw out that first pitch to Lee Roy as minor league manager had giving him the word that you're going back to the major leagues and you can't make that stuff up. We told Aaron will you take it easy on us. We're getting emotional in the booth every time you're out there. He says I'm trying to hold it together and you see we sit next to Johnny Venter's the other guy who's had three Tommy John. So those two know what it's like to work through something and come back no balls in a strike to Anthony Rendon who grounds to third stock has made a good play charge that ball on the backhand and threw him out so Rendon has all for to two totally different at bat for Rendon right. Didn't swing the first four pitches at the first at bats one that both pitches from Woodruff and that at bat from the Nats have been in these situations before. by three or more and we all remember back in September when they were down 6 to 6 to the Mets and to the Kurds Mizuki hit the three run walk off that really kind of got this team in that lead of the wildcard. They never let it go. happen. I text you after back Soto struck out his first time and takes outside Freddy Peralta loosening French shooter the lefty sat I think is six miles high over Bible line and stuck us makes the blood if you're asking why Peralta is up and not Souter Souter will start innings Peralta if Woodruff needs help we'll be here to get him out of Craig council does a good job with that pen is he keeps those guys fresh he told us today of Souter pitches to innings he doesn't pitch for two games so as much as he runs through the doesn't pitch for two games so to two down now for Howie Kendrick picked up the first nets hit the bottom half of the second Washington has only two hits the other left the yard a home run by Trey Turner when he was with the Los Angeles Angels he was one of the most ever hope for second baseman when he was there. ever hope for second baseman average with two world line to left Ron over and makes the play one two three heading for Brandon Woodruff for rulings in the bush Trey Turner accounting for the only Washington run with a solo home run but they trailed 3 1 as Max Scherzer goes to work in the top half of the fifth Travis Shaw is the pinch hitter so Craig council has gotten everything as you said Frenchy everything he could've wanted from Woodruff for innings and I'll tell you what Ron he attacked with that fastball great tonight I mean he now has a body of work considering what he did last year in the a body of work considering what four innings a couple of hits that Trey Turner homerun that's the first time he's gone four innings since July 16th and there were handshakes all around the Milwaukee dugout as he came off the field in the fourth there was Brent Suter who will be the next pitcher how good a feeling is that run as a pitcher when you go out there this is a high leverage game obviously and you've done your job and now you watch and see if you're your bullpen can hold that lead for it. Well you know it's an unusual it. him being an All-Star this year and that earlier in the season. He's a guy that inspected six seven innings out of Cho's walks shot a lead off here in the fifth and last evening ended as we revisit the Braun story. Ryan struggling a little bit to make his way around that field but he certainly made that play to the end. And you can see he's favoring it right now. it's going to be interesting to see. He might get one more bat you see. game defensively two walks allowed by Scherzer the first one hurt him because Randolph followed with a two run homer that was to begin the game and then here in the third shot. Interesting Daniel Hudson up for the Nationals closed a lot in September. Martinez sensing maybe this is a closing moment here even in the fifth inning fouled by Christian and a long run for Trey Turner if there's anybody desire to make a long run it's one of the fastest guys in the league Turner flagged it down for the first up post season captivates us with its dramatic moments in the MLB At Bat app has them all. It's the one place to get everything for your favorite It's the one place to get highlights pitch tracking and much more download MLB At Bat today. The most interesting first pitch of tonight's game because Greendale hit a homerun in the first pitch he saw in his first at bat almost hit a homerun and curve ball on the first pitch in his second at bat and the first pitch in his third at bat has swung out and foul almost pinned with the ball to the railing over there. That ball was hit so hard stat cars powered by a doping duress the oldest one wait x velocity guys. The only question here if the ball is going to be high enough to get out for a homer. 41000 umpires here virtually forty one thousand one. And it's that last one. That's what counts. That's Mike Everwood behind the plate. One ball one strike Travis Shaw. Just a couple of steps off the bag at first. That pitch sales high in a way to and one run I'm guessing just like Peralta was warming up for would or if you bring Hudson in get the final couple outs and then Strasburg starts in end. I don't want him coming in. I would think the same thing thinking to one change up. Aren't you against Rondo who seems to have had the number on the fastball and the breaking ball three balls and a strike. That's what grand Dalton. He's a smart hitter. One hundred and seven walks for a catcher. He knows what he's doing there like you said. He's been all over the heater 3 1 the ground all as a hitter French. You've got to take that pitch. You're not looking for that. That's a big time pitch right there. Randolph gives you some great effects for this entire brewers team. If you've seen Max Scherzer pitch a lot you just don't see this many good swings against him in a ballgame to five minutes. The Brewers have done that and I would see if he's got a fastball in here it's gotta be a way you cannot challenge grand ball and with the veto right here another payoff pitch to the Brewers catcher spawn at ball for there and fouled it off Randolph 28 home runs this year a career high knocked him 77 Rollins has already Homer tonight and here it comes more for two while the name of the game right. If you're a hitter is your ability to own the strike zone and know the strike zone and what pitches to swing at and Randolph is as good as any one in the National League at differentiating but but between the pitches and taking that nasty cutter that's how you draw a hundred and nine networks. Number two in the National League here's moose Dorcas stock in Hero 0 4 4 combined with three strikeouts. I think if they had done some this ball game right now. Runners lead from first and second stock has had a great quality it's called a straight back and we're even at in one left handers have done the damage tonight against Max and they're one swing away from making this another game. Left handers tonight left handed hitters for the Brewers tonight 3 4 8 2 home runs at double 1 1 is on the way sure is a record hit hitting the calf and he's sticking hard in the stock it's right here fastballs up cutters and Stocker says absolutely right here fastballs up cutters I think Matt on two pitchers fouled straight back the Brewers got to Scherzer right off the bat to run the whole ball in the first bite run ball solo shot in the second to lead it off by that guy Eric Thain's Trae Turner's solo home run is all that Washington has got a took 3 1 game and the Brewers threatening four more here in the fifth I mean real brilliant at bats here by the Brewers said those of pitches that are on his thumbs and he's staying as the at bat so that's a frustrating thing for Max right now I think he's getting frustrated they're thing for Max right now I think to seeing guys swing through and really making it difficult for him to put him away baby Martinez told us would be available tonight and a really for line and foul just pass Kendrick at first Kendrick right on the line because with that dive he was about four feet at the foul territory Milwaukee trying to add two which lead him in the fifth runner in scoring position they struggled in that department this year they were position they struggled in that at two thirty seven well this is one of those and that's where just a battle between two veterans Scherzer with the first pitch fastball a couple of those fastballs in his talk his heart rate cut that one right there he fouled straight back that one stayed in the at bat changeup almost hit it down the line for stayed in the at bat changeup the battle and as a hitter right there that changeup was the pitch set up that whole sequence to stock this is a great change of hitter hit it finally came back with that heater just got him off the Scherzer has had custom here is no as he makes his postseason debut here only played an 84 games and nineteen home runs swinging at that pitch up but he's got power to right center field are trying to wriggle off the hook again. You know if I've ever seen Mac shows will work this hard to get through five minutes he walks a couple. So they don't hurt in or in the middle of a fifth but the wild card game on TV is you've got to be ready when you face this card game on TV is you've got to Brent Suter who works extremely fast and he misses the mark to his dribble Cabrera. Those start off the 5th Mark Burley was always the mark the time to shoot for Suda works about that quickly. The call tonight as presented by physicians insurance for all of us. First call to the bullpen of the night and its suitor the guy who had Tommy John surgery in August of 2018 appeared for the first time September 2nd of 2019 and has been virtually on hitting all 18 and a third 15 strikeouts in one walk allowed one home run to your on Alvarez but who hasn't got left for it over the New York array of zero point four nine in his nine games they check down there with Kerwin Danley at first he said that swing like a broom I mean there could not be a better bounce pass into a game four sooner would you have thrown ninety nine miles an hour a softer toss for suitor. I honestly thought he went on that high fastball when he can see the breath taking his time. They all know Souter loves to work they're going to try to They all know Souter loves to holding writings to a 1 28 average so that Cutter has been tough. Sometimes though when you try to take your time with the pitcher you get yourself out of sync free to pitch they didn't think he would come back this summer Souter and they just kept getting reports that he was throwing three innings 30 pitches every report was saying that he was right on time and this is a frustrating AP guys when a guy guys out there throw it eighty seven miles per hour. You think I should square this up all day but he's able to put him where he wants you said Ernie. 1 1 on the ground a short RCA throws him out for the first time the story goes with Souter had a two minute and twenty six second half in it that's working fast but you know this Frenchy you play behind a pitcher like that you love it keeps you on your toes. Your favorite thing to do you get out there within five minutes you're back in the get out there within five to know. For more on Bryn shooter Lauren Shehadeh what you got. Ernie you guys mentioned Craig council saying four innings four winters with best case scenario. He's also said he's a nice contrast to Brent Souter to your point Ron there's the righty lefty element but one has a plus plus fastball one's soft tosser extreme power versus extreme finesse would you've touched a hundred tonight guys. Souter didn't throw a single pitch above 90 miles per hour all year long. Thank you Lord and you can speak to that too Jeff as a as a hitter wouldn't you. Maybe you're just getting used to what the starters got. Then you bring somebody in who's that different. Yeah. You're used to it. You saw it even though Coburn He felt two or three pitches up. Same things as there popped it up. Listen would you love to have six haters in your bullpen of course you would. six haters in your bullpen of Versatility can be your friend having different guys come in with different kinds of repertoire. I'm writing that down versatility with be your friend. Good to live by Strasburg continuing to work up a sweat as Robles takes a healthy Cup and is warming to Ryan Zimmerman the face of the franchise. Played his first Games at RF K. suitors got the ball back and ready to go and his foul back. And that's one thing the Nats haven't been able to get guys on And that's one thing the Nats put pressure on this defense talked about some arms that are kind of sore right now some outfield legs that aren't healthy but they're like Craig council on this team stick to the script they've gotten a symbol from Kendrick and the second solo home run from Plummer in the third and that's it in the hit Department three balls and two strikes well if you're a national fan you would love to see Robles somehow someway get on the base and have the franchise come up and maybe do something big. Robles took a good at bat there for the youngster Ryan Dozier will pinch hitter interesting move there Ryan. I don't think it's the worst move dozer Zimmerman. He's got a kind of a longer and sooner you see he's trying to pound that ball in on right handed pitchers I think they're putting dozer up there someone handed pitchers I think they're can get the inner part of the play maybe a little more power at this point in his career then Zimmerman but interesting one for one Zimmerman is off sooner but one for nine Dozier but at least Dozier has had more at bats and maybe has more familiarity with Souter it's winner go home watch as the Tampa Bay Rays host the Oakland A's in the American League wild card game presented by Hancock tire. Tune in on ESPN at 8:00 as the postseason story starts to I think a big advantage for the Nats. We said coming in they're bench fans a lot of stuff coming off this bench compared to the Brewers. this bench compared to the him in here that chance has seen him and he's got a chance at a home run over. How close big part of the Nats game of course is stealing bases against left handed suitor. I don't think it's going to opinion to Mrs. thereby Mike Everett on the two pitchers from soda one outside in high and this one above our zone anyway you're already facing the guy this one above our zone anyway If you're dozers saying that he doesn't need any help here. Sarcasm. Alive and well among the forty one thousand here at Nationals Park well-balanced with the lead at first standard of the play hard hit and look at the stop by moose Stockett who throws rose great stop by New Stock is right there but that scenario all year well he's kind of been hurt with that on wasn't a bad thing he just pulled them off enough that Dozier was able to get there before it was a great stop on a ball that was absolutely smoked and yes the ball just really sails and it looks like the Brewers are gonna review it. I don't know why he's absolutely safe at first base this shouldn't take. Yeah it's interesting that the Brewers took a shot here maybe it's getting late for them and they wanted to take their shot here but I think an easy call for Chelsea that's pretty clear cut right there. Nice try buy things last year. Dan I assume you are manning the replay room. And now you have a pitcher who stand out on the mound to wait in super sight. I like what they're trying to check. when he originally caught the ball. That looked pretty close right. That's what they're checking. Yeah. So forget the dive back to the bag. Let's see. Let's see if James was able to hold the bag on the original throw. Yeah that's what he's got to be what they're looking at. Yeah that's what he's got to be did. That's why he returned to the base. But still it's interesting that's a hit for Dozier. Usually they separate the play even if you make a great play. If a good throw would have gotten them that's an E5 just changed it to an error. That makes sense and this is what the Nats have been waiting for an opportunity to get this crowd in the game. for an opportunity to get this right here Homer in the third the first pitch by sitting down. Yes keep the fastball down the Turner loves the ball middle of the plate and up soon retired the first to his face but a single and an E five has brought the go ahead run to the plate me to 1 Turner has got to be looking for that cutter right here get ready and get the hands out in the air to left center field and Lorenzo Cain makes the catch. End of threat end of five on CBS seven hits in the game three have left the yard. Milwaukee leads 3 1 winner goes on to play the Los Angeles Dodgers best of five in the National League Division Series and here's uncharted territory for Stephen Strasburg on and relief for the first time in his career in the regular season or postseason has done it in the all star game. But here we go on the wild card game after Scherzer went five Strasburg is on to face Ryan Braun and the first pitches lined up left under normal circumstances he might think about challenging the arm and left but Braun is hobbling his first brings Zurich fame to the plate and brings us a stat cast powered by a W.S. and see that launching are the launching his great exit velocity wasn't hard. He didn't hit it hard off Scherzer but as we said he got hit just enough. He's maybe the strongest guy in baseball. So Braun reached Strasburg with a single famous takes strike. Well this is what they wanted to do a surge or faltered. They wanted to come in with Strasburg. They wanted him to start an inning foresee pitches from the stretch all the time anyway so not a big change for the first Strasburg I think that's the hardest thing for Dave Martinez probably tonight. hardest thing for Dave Martinez You have three studs Scherzer Strasburg Corbin windy go to him when you pull the trigger. We talked before the game. Scherzer was starting this game. He said it was hard. Yeah. Jasper's had a great year and he said he approached Rosberg and said How do you feel about the idea of relief. Is that fat is shattered all right thank you Casey. Well desperate times call for desperate measures and while Well desperate times call for point sixty eight Ray for the bullpen of the Washington Nationals that's the highest of any team that's in the postseason Lorenzo Cain is 0 for 2 Drew Pomeranz continues to loosen in the Milwaukee pin back to the point about Strasburg and baby Martinez squash third. Yeah I don't have a problem with it I closed in college it was about a 54 footer. Well if you Martinez you have to manage this game to keep the run at three for the Brewers and hope your team comes back. You have one of the best offenses in the National League still have twelve outs left and I think Strasburg is a great guy to bring in right now the way he's pitched this year. We saw a sharp curve ball there so far it looks to have is good stuff. Double Play Ball helped strike up the end of this Bud's for the blues the reds and the Warriors This Bud's for the Giants the jazz and the magic this Bud's for the home team the MLB postseason on CBS is brought to you by Hancock tire chase down your passion never half way and by Post makes the same people that brought you dinner bottom half of the sixth inning and we are zipping right along a wild card game at the trading deadline most people thought that Madison Bumgarner was at a meeting flies out to left golf the guy you're about to talk about what you Pomeranz yeah. Most people thought Madison Bumgarner or they're closer Will Smith. We're going to be traded and play a role with a postseason team. played the biggest wolf in Twenty six and two thirds for the big tall Lefty. I'll tell you what with Rendon Soto come up it's a big inning for the Nats to try to get something going. for the Nats to try to get pen waiting to come in here in the next couple innings but it's smooth. 6 5 2 4 to your knee right to Rendon shook it with law Shehabi law. Ernie we learned last night that nearly September the Nats offered Anthony Rendon a seven year deal in the range of 210 to 15 million dollars. I think Washington is realistic that they won't keep Rendon from testing the market. But seven for 210 is the exact same contract as Scherzer had shows how highly they think of him one of the most understated superstars in baseball an all star for just the first time in 2019. While there's so many good players at that position I think that Anthony would feel much better if he was offered the Aaron Nardo contract at eight years to 60. He'd feel much better the numbers that Lauren gave us. Ah ok. Yeah. They'll work. Yeah listen you play your whole six seven years to get to free agent this guy definitely deserves to test the market. I think listen him and Gary Cole those two guys don't get the Brinks truck. Who tied him up. Strike three called. It's just such a strength to be able to a great hitter like Rendon to give him three different looks and his three at bats. really sit on anything or work a pitcher to a place where he knows maybe what he's gonna get on a certain count. Rendon 0 for 3 Soto's over 2 as he stands in with nobody on and to help hold everything brewers relievers like to get it and throw it how does a towering fly ball to right along the line and it's going to be foul. Well to be as young as Soto is and adept at hitting both lefties and right he is set to eighty five against left handed lefties and right he is set to against right handed pitching. That's why he's been solid in that fourth hit cleanup. Childish Gambino as some call the 20 year old rarely gets cheated up there. You can see him pulling off there though a little bit and I know it's tough it's ninety seven you're trying to get going. But Soto watching him all year. You know him probably Ronald Cooney junior at the Braves two best guys are going opposite field power wise to strike approach he'll choke up they'll lengthen that stance open it up a little bit wouldn't chase upstairs to add to noticing a pattern these brewers pitchers are trying to get these Nats hitters out up in the zone. WOODRUFF Suter now Pomeranz and the ball upstairs had has beat them for the most part. The only one it didn't beat Trey Turner back to back strikeouts for Pomerantz and a 1 2 3 6 20 19 National League wild card as presented by a handcuffed tiger. Seventh Inning Max Scherzer started Stephen Strasburg came on in the sixth. We are in the top half of the Orlando Garcia takes a breaking pitch for a strike. We don't see anybody in the Yet the pitcher spot doing that. I see Pomerantz with a helmet on and a bat. I see Pomerantz with a helmet on while to find their stuff because it hurts so much. A few bats at bats now at this point the game's lined up form that they're going to try to ride Pomeranz for one more inning and then hater for two if Pomerantz gets in trouble. Later how to save this year of two and two thirds innings there is the Milwaukee flame thrower another breaking pitch foul on the way Strasburg came on and the sixth a lot of single on the first pitch to Ryan Braun hopes to double play ball onto Eric blames on a broken bat and then struck out key high chopper to short corner throws him out out number one here in the seven. T-Mobile is introducing its newest most powerful signal ever no signal goes farther. No signal is more reliable whether you're home or away. T-Mobile is with all right. So Drew Pomerantz will bat against Strasburg here in the 7. He's 0 for 19 and I know a lot of money would be on Strasburg on this match. The council might have just told Don't do anything to hurt that left arm. be you'd encourage a left handed pitcher to bat left handed so that the pitching arm wouldn't be exposed. Oh for 19 he could always switch Strasburg. That's something wrong. I think he's done so good is getting back that curve ball when he came up facing him. He had one of the best curve that slider with it I felt like his arm might've been you know mixed up in that slot. Two down on record third and that takes us back to the top of the Milwaukee order. That's a good point friendship I think what happens with pitchers. Very few have a hellacious curveball to go along with a hellacious slider it's either one or the other. And in adding that pitch it almost seemed like he was in between and what he was going to throw almost too many pitches for Strasburg. now he's got three plus pitches. That's a dandy again and one French you can and again we call him Frenchy because everybody French you can and again we call Nobody calls Jeff friend for Jeff. But but you face Stephen Strasburg right out of the gate. It was not fun Yeah. You look at that Curveball right there I told you that one of the first at bats I ever had he there I told you that one of the my head and then came back with the heck curveball right there so you can imagine what happened to him. He read the whole thing was the talk of baseball he made his debut 1 1 the Griffin Well the one thing now that he has developed as he's gotten a little older in his career is that when he's behind in the county has no problem throwing a curveball or changeup the do but he's not fair. It's just not fair. And to baby Martinez mantra has been stay in the fight. Never more than tonight down 3 1 but there's the guy who got the scoring started in the first after the walk to Trent Grisham. The two run shot by Young's money won't all come curveball right here wrong. I think it's the best pitch. That's the one he's been using the Senate back to back strikeouts to end the top half of the seven find the stretch in D.C. We'll meet again. I don't know where Don't know when we'll meet again some sunny day game summary 3 1 as we head to the bottom half of the seventh inning. to the bottom half of the here on CBS Ernie Johnson Jeff friend for Dan Brown Ron Darling you know Craig Council doesn't like to label his pitchers as starters or relievers or closers or any longer they're out getters and they've done that. Tonight they lead 3 1 and this is playing out just the way he envisioned it. He's just a master at using his bullpen understanding where to use them against. What part of the lineup and also they've come through and getting four innings from Woodruff was key the council tonight and on the other side Washington has to find a way to get runners on early and put some pressure on the all these hitters. Only time that runners scoring position was last sitting two outs. Kendrick takes it's 2 1 0 as he faces Drew Pomeranz working in his second inning. WOODRUFF started and went for Souter pitched a scoreless fifth and it's two balls in a strike to Kendrick he has one of the three Washington hits and you talk about getting the leadoff hitter wrong. That hasn't happened for Washington tonight. The short answer is one of the slickest fielders in the game with one down getting more from rocket mortgage. You see the lines when Woodward Souter and Pomerantz and Josh Hayter working in the Milwaukee bullpen. Why did the games for the Red Sox postseason last year in Pomeranz initially was left off the roster. Then he was added later but never pitched. big in the postseason. Those pitching numbers for the Brewers presented by Rocket Mortgage by Quicken Loans he's been such a starter. Now you see coming out of the pen reminds me a little bit of a Now you see coming out of the coming and letting it go at ninety seven. Not holding anything back. Is the word up to this uptick in his stuff when it comes out of the pen as opposed to a starter velocities better crispness of his breaking ball is better. But here's the guy who started eleven game winner and an all star. And they're trying to get the ball into the hands of that guy with the lead. Josh Hayter do you think they'd come to him sending a couple of guys get on. Or do you think they wanted him They would love to be able to hold off and bring him in for the eighth and ninth inning. It's all going to be dictated by how successful Pomerantz is here in the sub. He was certainly successful in the sixth three up three down with a couple of k's Daniel hooks them up again for Washington. Second or third time up for Daniel Hudson. There is a nervousness in this ballpark right now and a 3 1 game bottom half of the seventh not the middle. Last year you know they haven't barreled up much aside from three fans who are no strangers to postseason disappointment. And it's been a situation in field advantage head deciding Games right here and could not close the deal. They've lost six in a row when they could have eliminated their opponent. And the thing that really stings here in the ballpark in Washington Kurt Suzuki with two down Ron Paul a bunch of games here this year same thing with myself. I think this crowd feels with this team it's a different team. Banshee really enjoy this team I think watching them play they play hard. Dave Martinez gives them the leeway to go out there and do Dave Martinez gives them the There's been a a party type atmosphere here. But the baby shard in Toronto Parra coming over in the middle of the season the homerun dance that a lot of that. That's why I think these fans really enjoy watching this team but they just haven't got anything going.
