Lamon as I can imagine and my finger does he did the same well that's changed no it still is you know Bob Kang Alric was here you know he's retired from being a head of Audi Sport but he was here because he's now involved with the ACO is one of their sort of guiding arms and and still as much a fan as ever so here we go then getting ready for the start of race three for grid 3 our leading car will peel off into the pit lane and Roger wills on pole position and Tom Alexander alongside in the big Aston Martin charge to the line the final 43 minutes is underway for these cars and look from behind third on the grid edward cooks Lotus 15 also having a good run up against the pit wall and around the outside comes the Ferrari bread van so we got a challenge yeah and had sugan hopes really going one of that lesser up from the second rope a great start from hallucis aim again yesterday under braking though the lista fancied its chances but this is where the little nimble our lotuses to make their mark looked as though actually brought two wills ran a little bit why can't quite see he's out of shot as we look at the earlier part of the midfield going through but up and through the Dunlop curve its Lucas a looser in the Ferrari fed van Fred ban tucked in behind hands who the Holtz and already got a little bit of a gap to those behind but Roger wheels be trying to atone for his errors one car is already coming to the pit so all not right for that but all very much right for Lucas hallucis start the race yes to Martin from the outside the front row has fallen back to fifth where is what the Wills rods wills may have gone off at the Dunlop curve there's the project who want to Aston Martin highly aerodynamically adjusted essentially tv4 underneath so the db4 GT the white car project t12 behind and similar motive power to include too clearly a much more aerodynamic car Austin Healey's Morgan's Jaguar e-types more purpose-built race cars lotuses elvers the mighty one of three Corvette see ones here Roger wheels I did spot some way down he's oscillating on the order had his spin or whatever but I had to wait to rejoin which is always the curse on the opening that waiting for him to come through he's down in about 15th place just sort of in the background the shoppers fantastic racing between the maserati birdcage and one of the little notices though it's just so nimble of the chicane they didn't get onto the straight and it's very very hard for them to keep up they've got to stay in the pit lane they're on the in the slipstream number 66 i saw it coming into the pit so that's not the dream start for the Porsche speedster hopefully they can get that going and just want to welcome this morning to the Box port RC has come down to join and sadly I must stand down for this race leaving pool commentating with Martin Haven but rest assured I'll be back they'll have wild horses to keep me away from all this so I'll hand over to Paul who's very kindly come to join us to use his spread his expertise so first lap of the race through the second chicane on the Mulsanne straight there's the little low-slung lista maserati who looks like somebody sat on the plans he's got a car in either mirror and he didn't see the Morgan coming up the inside so as ever the final race of the week for this group of cars and just as exciting as the first Roger wills in the low-slung White Lotus 15 they're carving his way back through the field and a door handle the door handle race behind the leader as the Ferrari bread man starts to ease away and Will's trying to undo some of the drivers early on Paul it's a sweltering day outside already and the racing is just as electrifying as it has been throughout the weekend it is indeed and you're so right there Martin it is beautiful weather here and just looking at that sight there but the cars coming away from Mulsanne corner down on that twisty turny way down towards Indianapolis Roger wills doing a fantastic job it's almost as if this had been pre-programmed in the script that you get the fastest most urban most assertive drivers in the field if he was down to 6 feet after and where we're saying it was a spin but he was but but who knows but he's now crying his way back up that is gonna be wonderful to see Martin yeah we're gonna have to keep track of his progress this is the battle for 3rd place the red at Maserati Burke 8 right behind is the Lotus 15 at the 22 car that's the low murmur and a wood machine right behind them is the pale green dp2 1/2 that's project to onto the Aston Martin and the db4 GT which started on the front row of the grid which is such a front-runner in both of the previous races and in second place cleaning a bit of guns off the visor in the third case now I wonder where that was why squash away the car in front is she's chucking out bit of oil that's that's Newton Holt's in front of these two who's chasing Lucas elusive the leader so there's the birdcage who can halt spawned in the Lister jag brave lad Ferrari absolutely great to see that because a lot of racing he's there yeah but it disappeared for a while but we're certainly seen because they're doing quite a lot of racing and Roger Welsch down the east side of the db4 in fact Roger wills in that white lotus past the other lotus and the Aston Martin in the Porsche curves in one corner so he is fully lit up and charging his way back through the field looking at that picture though you do actually see how small that Lotus is absolutely being his way through you're gonna find that some people just aren't going to see him the Morgan they're going wide at our large now in years gone by that would have been a very different outcome we now have run off at Arnage yeah this battle between the alpha and the Morgan really really joined tucking in no no questions asked there but a sad number 66 Porsche yeah well they've had a few miles out to that class look big one of the drivers there with its two owners and it raced in the all Porsche race as well as you can see number 14 it's also here in this Plateau three final encounter now here's one of our free Corvettes he was this is the a vocation of a Cunningham a Briggs Cunningham run Corvette c1 might even have being breached Cunningham's first race here at LeMond and the sticky and chilly car was the best of the three being chased down by a TVR grantor oh so there's another sort of small British manufacturer that cut its teeth raised its products here at Lamont it was very much part of the aspiration of almost every railway arch manufacturer in periods try and do that that everybody who was starting to build sports cars wanted to run it along TV are very very much part of that TV are very checkered history book separately as they come and gone more times than most of us have had hot dinners lock up there in the way into the Porsche curves for that number 70 Chevrolet yep here's the Alfa [Music] yep I think you just had a run down into you came so this is the Cecotto bodied alpha this is the SV cigar toe and there's another s head which is a very similar looking car but just a little less developed in the 1,300 CC engine so 1,300 CC twin cam it's from me based on the 105 2 liter he carried the speed into but not out of that she came there and the Lotus comes sweeping right by it's not interesting that those two cars looked so completely different and that their performance and font characteristics are different again we've seen the Alfa Romeo closing up very very closely now behind the Lotus if you're going to go from the inside from no this is not their sort of playing each other suit really are do you expect the slightly bigger engine alpha to maybe canter by the Lotus on the straight and the Lotus to out-brake the alpha being lighter and nimbala with its 1100 cc climate extension it's probably actually producing more horsepower than the road-based 1,300 CC Zagato the 105 Julieta base not only some great road cars that was the base for a lot of good cigar - racers this purpose-built body the - frame chassis very very different from anything that you can buy on the road left-hand side a pair of Lotus elites 1100 cc climax engine plastic body on the right-hand side plastic body as well glass reinforced plastic for the Chevrolet Corvette just a little bit more in terms of capacity and horsepower you saw there a game that the big bus of the Corvette couldn't get stopped and the Lotus just nipped in front under braking and in the background there we saw the White Lotus green stripes which is the delivery of team a linked and that was the first car that David Hobbs ever raced at Lamar of a car looking like that so that kind of the stretch of the various different things finished up truck driving a Porsche 962 yes stretching itself everybody has to have humble beginnings don't they I began like you see the Corvette just Canter's away up the straight and it'll start breaking about halfway down the straight while the Lotus is still on the rev limiter on the on the climax engine the the design that we see very much even even now that is much flatter than it would have period the season followed a tremendously talking wallowing there we have we have the number nine car and that's that's got such a narrow wheelbase look at that it's all over the place but nonetheless a very very effective race car yeah deutsche bahn a with its twin cylinder engine 906 745 CC beg your pardon so the smallest engine car in the field gain those of the sorts of cars that with the little lotuses and the Porsches particularly in this period were still going to try and claim victory in the coefficient of thermal efficiency and that sort of regulation or that handicapping that matches the tiddlers against the giants by giving them a sort of handicapped advantage based on engine capacity and power that is also at work here in this group so although we'll see the big cars at the front of the field and the smaller cars at the back of the field at the checkered flag that's not all there is because you then multiply their race time by a certain factor depending on what car it is and in fact in this group the overall winners let's say in race two were the Wills and Clark car but on that the performance index it was an austin-healey sprite the number 79 car that was actually judged to open you know that the factors have worked out had done the best job for what it had so it's not always the car that gets the checkered flag first and ends up winning entire event court only three races are added together they only count we can't drop a bad school or an on finish or a pit lane penalty or you know going too fast to the slow zone penalty so it's all every lap you do is absolutely crucial and look at how that for me Nina Martin that's exactly what we were talking about and as you say those cars which were built for the index of thermal efficiency was originally the time it was it was came to be known by our good friends charles dressing in the USA as the index of runny cheese because it was dominated very much small engine cars like that DB and the other ones the window and you actually when the manufacturers claim Oh like the sprite and that's why Colin Chapman has such a love-hate relationship with his race burger he came over and the organizers found virtually every reason one well because yes that the t v-- and canard and so were small manufactures and they were trying to you know keep their market alive bread van seems to be what if he's covering himself in his own oil possibly might have little weeping union somewhere at the front look at that I've got that suspension you can see there the cubes which gave that Maserati Birdcage its nickname it was built a small diameter to use and if you see one of those worse clothes on it looks more like a birdcage than anything else absolutely right so that you right so there is our lead group and that is Roger wills in the battle for the lead now there's else who can halts in third fourth place is the bread fan but you saw as Roger wills went by Lukas her loose a little arm out of the cockpit little wave to the Ferrari brave and driver so that was just at the beginning or at the bottom of this shot in little angle of the dangle there from the DB certainly saving on tire wear if nothing else so we have had a change for the lead it just went out of our shots as it was happening PFE or chang with David Clark man who runs the Jota sport team in prototype racing president the ACO basically two different cars here actually he's also racing with his brother Francois in another car in another category so like a number of Formula One winners and a lot of top single seater and historic drivers multiple cars to race that means not only a busy weekend but a very hot weekend also means you have to in some cases drivers will be racing in consecutive races so you have to sort of coordinate your pit stops a little bit between the two cars and some drivers are driving two cars in the same marking Stretton was in one of the races yesterday and probably will be a game during the course of the day today so you've got to coordinate your pit stops and whit wet which stint you do so that you don't end up during the end of one race in the beginning of the next one because you can't get back to your car and also absolutely cream-crackered yeah absolutely and there obviously Francois phenom talking about their ex Prime Minister of France yeah I've been racking my brains to think of any other heads of states that we've seen in embrace first ever got Crown Prince of Denmark obviously and the are now that here are our podium finishers overall from the grid to race achievement he finished in second place at the end the Jaguar d-type ended up with an engine problem right at the end and so number 21 Jaguar ended up finishing victorious John Pearson making his his way off the podium there's a great trophy yes are they though magic semen certainly as entertaining as anybody in his Jaguar d-type it looks a song I'm not sure what it was either this model possibly a gear selection problem kept looking down into the cockpit and shaking his head I think possibly the gear leaver may have parted from the gear box you may have had to have done the end of the race possibly just stuck in fourth gear and again look at the difference in characteristics of those it alerts us of running rings around the nets [Music] different kind of car in every respect but this these cars now obviously work we're gonna be looking for pit stops we've seen the Roger Wells Cup car just do a fastest lap at 451 so he is not hanging about there was no doubt about that he's he sums six or seven seconds out faster than anybody else and he's already in first position because now he's got through most the traffic so they will be considerably less traffic in front of him than he's had to work his way through so his speed is only likely to increase jaggary type gorgeous very unusual color even for an e-type I have to say I do particularly that I can hold color Dean's have their 70 green 170 black one so many red ones I'm a big fan of Primrose yellow on any time that's that's probably my number one choice but I may well be so I'm not quite sure what that sort of rose color is but I really like that a lot that's very similar to the color of the C type that's JD classics run so whether that was a standard Django cutter or not we we really don't know we're now seeing quite a few pitstop visitors coming with us in the db4 GT in the background there there re type complete this even now throwing their shoes of the television because they know exactly what is called this is certainly be a grown man in his Cooper Monaco type 49 that's very much designed around the current Formula One car yeah and it's really only a Formula One car with a with the body yes it's an extra seat up chassis will go sports car racing well we right we've seen the bobtail Cooper's out as well which are absolutely single seater race cars but they managed somehow to convince the authorities that they were two-seaters look at they see just it just absolutely pristine you know that is a hard-working race car but it actually looks as gorgeous as any show pony you'll ever see what a beautiful beautiful yeah and it's it's nice isn't it that we have actually got cars out there that you could drive down to the shops yeah not all all back from the race meeting also you mean that you don't run out of talent on the too serious basis but you know this there's a lot of cars here that have been comprehensively rebuilt and Maggie type if that's where this original paint I'd be enormously surprised but certainly in the very oldest of the groups you know we had Alfre mayor's and Bugattis that have not had a lick of paint or a touch-up since the 1920s and where every single one of the a there years with with just great Authority and so so there is I understand you know the desire particularly for cars that have lived a hard life of racing cars tended to live a very hard life you know there's nothing as old as last year's racing car was absolutely expression through until the late 90s and early 2000s when they started to become worth a shedload of money you know racing cars got thrown away or for most famously of course with a sharp nose Ferraris 1961 cut up you know by had by Enzo Ferraris orders no no one else is having that we're going to cut them up and destroy them all so yeah a lot of them that had a very hard life in many hands Martin as a writer is from puncture hasn't it there's damage to the body worked as well so if you have been in somewhere very very wise drive they're not not flailing the tire back onto the bodywork taking a very careful reach back with that car has it's a barrier or another car somewhere because that's that bodywork damage is pretty definite there's the RTV sprite with the what Walker color scheme now that sir now that is the car that's led after the performance index calculations after race two of three so as you say yes with that broad white stripe across the nose a bit airing better two cars being race there the flat iron blister coming back into the he made it back big sigh of relief you sure now you compare that to the list of knobblies and the list of cost in which are racing at the front of the field which are much bigger cars it's got a Maserati Formula one engine in it but as you say you know fight.i it does look like somebody just left it out in the Sun in it and it's squished so I mean it's it's just lower car as you can imagine coming from Colin Chapman or you know in a bizarre sort of mid-80s Brabham you know laid at the laydown Brabham there there BT 55 you know it's that much of an Opel it makes the Lotus look positively high when it comes Roger wills taking the scenic route in yeah well we we've seen a bit of fat and it's I think questioned way you do it but Roger Wells but you got to be stout to 65 the white line so you can come in as fast as you like now there's one of all core are Corvettes that's down it think and now that is Indianapolis that's the second part of India after he's got straight onto he's run out of brakes now has that car just stopped because we saw the driver waiting to take over might possibly even be his outlet they'll trying to find it on the screen the 70 certainly he seems to have gone straight on at the left hand they're at Indianapolis Roger Wilson staying in the car we can see Deborah craft he's not going to be going back in we can see the the fern on the side of the crash helmet there okay 26 is a different one of our call Betsy wants ty wall not badly damaged I think they'll have to leave that certainly have a hefty crunch for the left-hand front corner of that Corvette leader first war leader back into the race with 21 minutes of this event left to run meanwhile this Lotus is now our race leader this is the lament words Lotus 15 that identical car ostensibly to that of Roger wills that's Carina Lau Minh in the car so she's out there doing doing her best with that won the 2002 yet to stop so Carina doing the first stint yesterday she did the second step not sure who did first and second duties during the night I'm stacking up said so didn't see that one yes increasing 63 Lotus in at second place and that is the magic help army in Korea Scalisi car it's a bit of an eye-opener to see these lettuces being quite as competitive as we are because the lettuces were never deemed in period to be therefore an outright win they were very much class fast Warriors Express but they they were never they're going to win races however let's not forget that cars have evolved over time ostensibly and properly in their period spec but the engines are faster that the tires are better that the brakes are better so it does change the characteristics and the other thing is that some cars were discarded very early when they weren't very effective and the team then moved on to a different car a better car what new design and you know after 20 or 30 years of racing even a Lotus 40 is now considered to be a relatively acceptable car whereas in period the Lotus 40 was famously a Lotus 30 with ten more mistakes so you know development cars that were not successful in period has continued now this is not good news or Korean album because she is not motoring at any kind of speed very much not it's going very slowly so in fact the 63 car which was started by Richard cookies that cook Harvey car that Lotus 15 in second place ah that's why she's going slowly we didn't see that there was the beginning of a slow zone so that's why she was only doing 50 miles an hour 80 kilometers now she was in the slow zone so there you go our slow zone running from the end of timing sector beginning to sector 2 which is at Mulsanne corner up through that little left/right kink these for the call Annapolis to on ours yes so they can then get a truck in their rescue the Corvette and off they go I was clearly where that Corvette has come to a stop is exactly where in the other cold yeah so you can't leave it there because it's basically blocking the escape Road with fast-moving metal not moving metal so so as a pit lane car number 2 that is the Patrick semen is Bullock Atkins and Clive joy Ferrari 250 GT berlinetta this is something you don't get to say very often the TVR pushing hard on the back of the 4s observers but nonetheless the team I'll grant you are there which is the little four-cylinder engine with the [Music] engine in the back back with the beautiful 250 short wheelbase that we see in front of it that really is one of God's great creations is their 250 GT yeah for me I think even more beautiful you kikyo I'm a big tour de france firma have to say 250 GT short wheelbase or Tour de France yeah I give the GTO is an iconic car but there is a little bit more than delicacy there's a bit more of there's a bit more of the Brutes about the 250 GTO unless you say the grand juror pall over the back of it at the moment and doing unholy I'm extremely well because different in every respect one comes out from Maranello the other one comes in a black pool yes which is that Asia granter isn't an MJ Angeles it's given us 1840 CC I was wondering if that's already 1500 GT 14 or the the original Cortina engine engine duh or bored out however whatever as you say that very much a proletarian approach you know the Colin Chapman approach raiding somebody's part bin whereas Maranello it was all about the engine Enzo Ferrari was all about the engine and the car and go well but most importantly in had to have the engine hoping up behind is another fabulous looking Ferrari giving them a wide berth becomes wise of course because so often here at Lamar throughout the years we've seen people who are involved in their own little battle and don't see the car bearing down on them from the back but yeah that's it that very much works worked well the lumen 22 car in pit lane so she is our race leader and the cook Harvey Lotus 15 will that come in as well the gap between there was only 13 seconds now this there's a bit of work going on to that carpet of the or all present ever-present gaffer tape PRP is there lifting the bonnet which is never a good sign in any sort of race that's there there is our second-place car so Lucas her loser goes back into leading the bread van it was still in gear as he removed his foot from the clutch he hasn't managed to find mutual so we are having a driver change in 63 the Wills and Clark car Baker partly cook and Harvey car and the Wilton car car that's already had it stopped so these are the leaders where there's a couple of cars in the top 30 but only a couple I haven't yet stopped yep gaffer tape just making sure that the the bonnet doesn't pop open on notice that's all done back in the fray back down it as we see the bread ran some this amazing city has beautiful an amazing one floors the breakfast Chrisman of course by the by the Brits back in period yes a derogatory term that is now if you just say what word if you just say the bread van and everybody knows exactly which car you mean it does and it's interesting that in fact Colin Chapman rebodied one of his Lotus 15 yes with a semi bread van body a litter that were racing wheel to wheel actually in the members meeting at Goodwood earlier in the year in very different temperature conditions a good 25 degrees here which was a good at least 20 degrees warmer very generous place to 30 degrees warmer taxi from across secured with snow in the surrounding fields around the race circuit a very different look that the for I pray fan with a slender lead you can see the third car in your shot that little low White Lotus 15 that is Roger Wills giving chase of at see leader the red Ferrari that's the austin-healey in the water in the middle the second-place car of Roger wills and pushing on very very hard now after that that Ferrari which was which was built a bit of a protest by a number of very disgruntled Ferrari team members who that went off and inside as they were going to do something different that's underneath there is a 250 short wheelbase and that that drove the body I was gonna host I have in my head I was just about to ask actually who was that drogo bodied and yes you've answered the question before you dance you asking that story of my life but yeah so it was a an official Ferrari and that it was actually a thorn in the side [Music] and that there was there was certainly a rub there and it certainly is doing extraordinarily well that water wells is really really closing down the month we see those cars coming down towards the turn off to the right for the Porsche [Music] seize him and give him the pointing out there we go you know that little signal yeah I've seen you off you go 15 minutes or 12 minutes from the end of affair weekend and so you don't want to lunge down somewhere and then have somebody Beyonder across in front window is closed everyone not okay the stupid chalet doesn't stop that's because it sounds in the gravel tracks or his aren't bracele battle then it was 4.7 seconds pulsar corner it's now 2.6 seconds as they get to the beginning the Porsche curves and the final element of the circuit will see that gap come down probably to around 1.5 seconds at the line Lucas a loser for a sector 48 seconds 40 7.44 Roger will so he brought six tenths back second sector 113 and seconds for Lucas loser 110 and ferrati will sew on the long sector to what worlds took three seconds out of him it's a decent rate of progress 11 minutes at a they doing let's see if yes just five and a quarter minute laughs so we've got at least two probably only two laps actually because they will bring the race to a halt without giving the leader a final lap there yeah we don't need a stopwatch now because we've been absolutely seared but we're seeing a little white glow just posing down and down and down on that 250 PT I don't I don't know what 4/10 of a second looks like but that was not 4/10 of a second at least still not 4/10 of a second now it is a gap between and that is still over a second however he has closed enormously we can see some of those differences we've already been talking about of the different characteristics the different ways these things and things do things but this Ferrari Brava absolutely made to come through the air to the very best of its ability it's before the word downforce had been properly understood gap it's just getting through the air and it's gonna do that but that motors is fast ripping but and that's why the Lotus is so low and so shallow because it's frontal area like with a submarine or an aeroplane if they've got a point at the front for a very good reason because the pointy of the front is the less resistance there is from the air that's why an arrow and the dart work better at travelling distances than say a brick but the problem with the Ferrari is first of all you look in the front and it's a big v12 and it's got a lot of carburetors sticking up now the Lotus is a much smaller engine the induction system is coming in the side so that gives it a lower frontal profile so you can make the bonnet lower you can make the Loews nose narrower and so you're presenting less of a profile to the air and the less frontal area less power will push you through the air just as effectively and that was always chaplains principle famous thinking boys used to talk about adding like headlights that's exactly what he did and that's what he's done with that Roger wills car that we're now waiting to see the battle for the lead because that's going to be really really on it soon but let's not forget the number six car behind it well I was just about to talk about the number six brave and because of that in the first race [Music] came into the pit lane after the pit window imposed and ran into a penalty and they're now being investigated for crossing the pit exit lane it seems that the car races very well but they haven't got a scooby-doo what they're dipping in and out of the pit we watched it in two races it's picked up two pit related penalties hog win things if you give them away with problems if they've already broken one rule then the the crops are not you can't be happy about the second one Roger Wells is now breathing Maranello dust from behind that red Ferrari and he's getting closer and closer they're now on the twiddly bit of the circuit again even the rearview you see that the bread van low as it is is twice the height of the Lotus in the frontal area of the bread man is enormous as well so the motors with much less horsepower Cleaves the air more efficiently as Ferrari needs more of that iron fist in its belly the Lotus does this is a real battle of very different cars and so much of a reason why historic racing is great fun because there's so many different shapes and sizes sort of a bit ruled out by modern car regulations little notice less powerful lighter nimbler and the Ferrari which has got power in abundance relatively for a Tara and brick top-end speed but you can see the Lotus making everything of what it's got that is now challenging for the lead for the second time Roger wills this time has got the run on Lucas a loser and goes by the problem is for Lucas when watch it passes him in the straight going into the Porsche curves he knows that the Lotus is now in its element and will go fast have a look at this pit lane exit and here we have the birdcage Maserati being investigated for crossing the pitlane exit before yeah that will have been further rounds the quarter up towards the dark lock bridge he was sort of being encouraged into it because the car on the inside was getting yet go by go by cuz he knew it's a much quicker car you look at a birdcage beside you and there's almost nothing else that you can be in in this race that's not going to be a slower car however again carrying speed on this circuit the bread fan is staying very much in touch with the Lotus this could be a real grandstand finish six minutes and 25 seconds will give us one more lap after this one I don't think they'll give them another and actually I think the die might be cast again you see what he wills that he fairly relaxed and unconcerned there he goes by another Lotus 15 if we roll the clock back to the 60s of course we would have had no chicane on the Mulsanne and we would have had white house at Porsche curves and that would possibly have given us a very different outcome because that Ferrari would just wound up and go on and go on and go on and gone very much so yes the Lotus would have run out of steam a long way behind the Ferrari down the Mulsanne straight actually there's that say there's definitely an argument for using the main road and not using stands here then we get down to Busan corner there's a big runoff area there and so the charging say well okay well what happens if they have a brake problem at the Mulsanne corner well they're much less likely to have a big problem at all so if they haven't had to stop for two chicane however and it was always the case that's the the road of course we can't do that now huge roundabouts at the end of Mulsanne that's probably what's what has done it for any plans that we have but turn up but you could still go straight through scans now here we've seen the change for third place because the Lister cost in with his jaga rented very different look much more so the bulbous and rounded than the Lister knobblies which got a sort of lower centre for dissection seemingly higher wheel arches right ahead of the maserati bird cage pet the bird cage is getting a decent few hundred extra pre an RPM that's a slippery Lister slippery bike cost of body list there but it's still giving a decent toe the bird cage has definitely got a dodgy oil Union somewhere look at the screen in front of the driver it's really quite missed it up and that's why he keeps clearing his visor but the bird cage is spraying its driver with its own lubricant not much because they've been racing for 40 minutes it hasn't run out yet so but it's still lit a little mist there'll be a little oil Union somewhere not quite as tight or maybe a little bit too tight so just opposing our oil the last half-hour whether you know again it may just be coming out of the breezes probably not a fatal flaw but Tilly wanna be feeling sick as a dog is breathing in all of that hot oil mist all the way through just to keep the car going he's doing a pretty stand-up job here our race leader's then Roger wills ahead of Lucas her loser Wilson carnauba 68-58 Lotus 15 Ferrari 250gt with his unique jogo body the rear wiper not quite real wash white in those days but a real wiper on a racing car hands up everybody who can name another racing car get a genuine purpose-built prototype that had a rear white answers on a postcard because actually it's going to take time to think of an answer I would imagine Roger Wells coming out to some back please not have to take any city risks but we're taking back Marcos I said go Indianapolis coming up to wrap the 250gt short wheelbase than a before car that was very nicely done the inside on the way into Arnage what's the company to offer in fact that car raced at the mourning period that was an acura bells car so that number four machine which raced here in 1962 didn't finish after an accident but it was a Curie Bells khartoum by shores Piaget and Robert Davila so again probably not as extensively raised because [Music] to be honest not that there isn't that with the Ferrari bread van you know some of these cars will have been much more developed in their racing careers we have 250 GT a little bit less so on two wheels sweeping through traffic at the end of the course occurs two minutes on the clock no sense that we a checkered flag a big unfilled will waxy drive-through penalty by the way has been applied to car number six so it won't be a post-race penalty for the Ferrari bread fan a drive-thru and if the checkered flag comes out now there is no time to do the drive-through so I would imagine a 30-second penalty would be applied to the race time however the leaders coming to the line for the final time potentially in our earlier races of men and a half the checkered flag wouldn't be out yet is it out as they come to the line not this time okay well a minute and 22 last lap of the race then can the Ferrari do anything here will the Lotus survive if our last race have been allowed shorter and Patrick seaman would have won it at a counter in the d-type but whatever went wrong with it went wrong dramatically on the final lap he lost 15 seconds to the car in second place that then became not the car in second place but the car in the lead that's all Roger wills there as the car goes light over the brow the top of the Dunlop curve just drifting the car over towards the curbs rumble strips though these girls are fifty years old and that therefore they are and looking around the public but they are old designs and they haven't done 24 hours but they have done quite road driving over the course of this weekend therefore not only are the drivers tired but the cars are as well Roger wells just putting a little bit more every corner every straight every lap just to give him that sir that feel of confidence with her without 1.2 second lead now and that's how he managed to catch Lucas elusive by gradually catching him you know corner by corner braking area by braking area so how planted the Lotus was you couldn't tell when Roger put the brakes on certainly couldn't the Ferrari because the back end he's just starting to move around at the braking here's the car that's in third place Hunt's Hogan halts in the costume body Lister jag in amongst a plethora of British sports car TR four in front and a Morgan tried to make room for itself on the inside there for what will be the final time for all of them as well who can halts in third the birdcage Maserati having been handed the penalty actually hasn't come into pit lane to serve it so that will end up being a time penalty after the race it'll drop out a fourth which will move the number 21 car the order now that started in eighth place seventh place both going three weeks project to one to the Aston Martin we've seen nothing of it really in the race whereas at the beginning of the weekend from yesterday's first race for the East cars it was very much among the front running group with the db4 D before way down the order was a it was leading the race and the very first one of these three races have a look at that profound because look at a loser he knows he's not gonna win this race so he is going to make so much fun on this last lap we're seeing in throwing around this the team elite livery Lotus elites getting a bit squishy on the way out of Arnage but holds on to it just watch the watch the Ferrari now as he comes down through those and Roger Wells on his own imperious way right-hander and then left and to [Music] a very different style of car the bread van from the Lotus again you notes higher it's taller it's got a higher center of gravity and you know bigger wheels and tires as well much more weight to move around so it does move around more in an older stock area if you look at the way it's being driven much more like the d-types that we're saying in the last race than the Lotus which is and all together sort of more modern that designed of racing car estates and it slow it corners in a flat manner it doesn't roll and again you know lack of weight means lack of movement and any unsprung weight is bad news for the cars suspension and as we said Colin Chapman ethos there was to make the car as light as possible and then only strengthened bits that broke which wasn't great least for the drivers quite often now it's that is definitely the way the cars develop to be as light as possible and then strengthen up anything that was and we've we've seen their the number six birdcage having its problems but they're still racing that's the mr. Maserati that we followed early on well try for not happy with himself there I think when problems for a DB for in the background going very slowly after Paris oh is that the peerless macaques got real problem at peerless GT okay so final lap and out of the final corner the checkered flag will be ready this time Roger wills in the White Lotus 15 will claim a victory in the third race for Plateau 3 and the winning margin has gone out from 2.8 to just under three and a half seconds over Lucas who Lucifer place will go to hunt sugan holes who drives the number five cost embodied at Lister Jaguar with that big balloon rear end on the car just looks as if somebody's thrown a tarpaulin over the frame might cost in the aerodynamicist knew what he was doing and clearly the numbers work on that car he comes across the line in at third place and up into fourth place will go volcanic Friedreich's impact has gone both getting Friedreich's he's got ahead of the birdcage Maserati so project who want to before the penalty for the Mazza move son looks as though he's going to take the checkered flag in for coach but our race winner there of Roger wills David David Clarke didn't drive the car he's sharing the Lotus with Pierre Fiat there is the car that now is coming to line in fourth place the path can Friedreich's in project two one two a car actually led 24-hour race hands have grandma help in period so that really has got some very very strong history it's been a Gaffa tape across the leading edge of the bonnet in race one the leading edge of the bonnet was was peeling up so clearly their bonnet hinges were a bit broken up the back of the bonnet you can see the little chrome Turner's the little keys that actually hold it in place two hinges from the front and opens at the back so it was never really in danger of blowing open I'd have been in danger of blowing off and serving his drive-through penalty into the pit lane comes the maserati birdcage so guillermo Fiero in the tipo 61 matter RT hon number six comes in to serve his drive through and the laminate wood at lotus finishing it shown as sixth on the timing screens [Music] [Music] [Music] I am the skies above the Circuit de la Sarthe the North American Harvard the t10 trainer it was delighting us all yesterday and just behind our paddock the art curial auction which has been happening this weekend some fabulous cars up for sale Road and race cars hip norman's there with one of his Marcus's that sold yesterday among a whole bunch of cars these pair of barn fire Mercedes SLS as well one of them was only got 1,300 miles on that must have been how can you how can you buy a car like that and just Park it and never drive it remarkable but some fabulous machinery passing through the auction rooms yesterday and the auctioneers had pretty sparkling trade I you know they're leaning against an open door I have to say with a lot of the owners here they don't take a lot of persuasion as you can see to buy some fabulous machinery so here's our result the third race of Plateau 3 Roger wills in the Lotus head of Lucas hallucinatory fred van and the cost embodied Lister jag of hunts who can hold finishing third project to onto aasta.martin Golf cam three chicks in fourth place at the line ahead of Guillermo Ferrero's bred being there burr cage and the Lao man would Lotus in six position so five very different cars in the top five find the race that weekend for Plateau number three the white low-slung Lotus of Roger Wales to man on pole position ahead of Tom Alexander's Aston Martin db4 the Aston Martin led very early on quite a lot at the first of the three races of the weekend but sweeping around the outside from Row 2 of the grid Luca SaLuSa in the long red Ferrari red van taking the lead from fellow front row starter that's who the nodes in the bulbous car number 5 the mr. with it's Costin body as the remainder of the seventy plus cars swept through the start Lucas who looser setting off to try and make a break for freedom Rutter wills have made a shocking getaway he got up to the Dunlop chicane ok didn't get out of the Dunlop chicane ok who's down at the bottom of the top 20 meanwhile birdcage Maserati the number 6 car of Guillermo Fiero working its way up from very four of the grid that's the mr. Martin db4 GT dropping down the other sports cars from all sorts of different countries Italy from the UK from Germany from France in this group of cars that raced in period from 1957 to 1961 the little Alfa Romeo based on the 105 Juliet with its fabulous a cigar toe body dicing with a Morgan Plus for borgund versus Lotus versus Corvette c1 in a way an awful lot in that braking and grip perhaps nothing in terms of horsepower at the other end of the engine size scale less than 800 cc in the DBS but plenty of attack from a driver showing a lot of commits that momentum is his friend problems for The Birdcage Maserati all the way through the race a fine mist of oil spray over Guillermo Fieros visor needed constant clearing and the beautiful copy of a Rob Walker 250 GT Ferrari in the form of a sprite he's bright with a fast top body in the middle of the action coming into the pit stops Roger wills making sure that he made his fast approach as possible passing a couple of other limbs errs on his way down to the speed limit line it was a really inspired drive project two on two coming in behind him left the laminin words at Lotus 15 out front as they went in for a rather later pit stop the chance to lead the race and he won the incident of real note one of the two Corvettes going off hard at Indianapolis in slow zone of the race and pride to rescue that and into the closing stages the brave man back in front Roger wills continuing to charge from behind and the rate of closing ensured that it was going to be a tough one for the Ferrari to win further back battling against the handicap of performance the small engine cars the Porsche massification flag is not always the final classification because the smaller cars have a handicap advantage roger wills moving past the Lotus with that one move the Lotus posture Ferrari with one to go Lucas Theresa would see the Lotus getting not bigger and bigger but less small perhaps in his rear view mirrors over the preceding lap in court by five seconds in a lap as they got to the checkered flag Matta wills with three and a half seconds or so in hand taking victory in the final race of the weekend for Plateau three the first race have been won by Lucas hallucinogen and it was the Lotus that was first to the flag in the night-time race so the Lotus takes the advantage to one and this this beautiful carnival atmosphere that we have here absolutely long that there's so much going on that's not it's there is certainly more coverage of the real estate here than there is at the 24 Hours clubs everywhere that we have so many different things happening and obviously we've seen the up Torrio auction site as well but there is so much happening that it's if there's too much to do and this is how locked away the cars are not all the cars are in open front intense just for a little bit to cover so you can please try not to drool on the machinery because you know there's a lot of cleaning up to do but you can look intimately of these cars and actually if the team aren't that busy they will be more than happy to tell you chapter and verse about what the car is where it came from what they're doing I mean how often do you get a chance to be this close to any kind of cars never mind 700 cars like this and some of them with fabulous heritage not just LeMond entrance we've got LeMond winners racing here in terms of both the men and the machines the cars from all across the globe from all eras starting in 1923 and with our demonstration races yesterday coming almost up to the present day we had GT one IRRI cars we had early LMP cars as well the 98 LeMond winner was being that was out on track yesterday so all sorts of different cars and yet more lining up in the baking sunshine
