pepper championship week and the first time since 1903 there's a Red River rematch Texas beat Oklahoma in October 20 miles away in down since the Sooners old Lee Wallace this season they'll try to avenge that today while winning their fourth straight big 12 title hi everybody and welcome i'm sean mcdonagh along with Todd Blackledge joined in just a moment by Holly Rowe delighted to have you with us for the start of a great championship Saturday of college football Todd this is as big a game as any in the country today they're playing for a conference championship obviously huge for both but in the case of Oklahoma now number five in the college football playoff rankings the committee will make their choices this weekend how does it look in your opinion for the Sooners they've had struggles on defense but a historic season on offense that has made them extra special I really think if all the favorite teams win tonight Alabama Oklahoma Ohio State Oklahoma is in all they have to do is win the game today but that's easier said than done because this Texas team is very capable of winning again they demonstrated on October 6th at the State Fairgrounds in Dallas it was one of the best games of the season at college football the highest scoring Red River game ever Texas one forty eight forty five both quarterbacks were tremendous they were absolutely terrific they're both fierce competitors to Tyler Murray was brilliant particularly in the court [Applause] [Music] [Applause] dazzling 67-yard touchdown run but he had two costly turnovers in the game in the ball game on the other side Marie he was spectacular for over 300 himself he ran the ball the yards but three bruising redzone touchdowns and I think for Texas to have a chance to win again today Sam Mellinger has to do the same thing Kyler Murray is going to do his thing Sam has to play the same kind of game there we talked to Sam last night he said he will run the ball even though Holly Rowe he's been dealing with a shoulder injury here in the second half of the season against he's pretty much been dealing with it every day happy to do amounts of rehab but he says because he's at eight recovery that he has and as you said Shawn we have Tom Herman and Sam will he have a more conservative style he loves to seek contact and they said absolutely not they want to win this game at the end of the game because we were out you're good wood since 2008 it's also their first appearance in the big 12 championship game since the 2009 season [Music] [Applause] conference title three conference championships is site of the annual Red Rivers showdown interestingly Oklahoma won the toss and deferred Lincoln roughly choosing not to put the nation's best offense out there first though Austin Seibert kicks off and though jordan humphrey takes a knee one yard deep into the end zone so here comes Sam Elega and the Texas offense sophomore from Austin Texas for more than twenty seven hundred yards just four interceptions two in the first game of the year against Maryland then he won a conference in school records 308 passes in a row without interception before he threw too in their regular season finale victory at Kansas grew up dreaming of being the Texas quarterback this is his biggest game as a longhorn and he swings it out to little Jordyn Humphrey trying to weave through the truck picking a nice tackle made by the corner trade or one [Applause] one of the things that Texas did very well on the first game was you big receivers will join Humphrey and Colin Johnson against these smaller corners for Oklahoma Humphrey 6 for Johnson is 6 6 they tried the Roderick Trey Watson and this Oklahoma defense which has struggled mightily throughout the season trying to make its point to the college football playoff committee that they are national semi-final worthy those of the matchups you talked about Todd that could be a problem for Oklahoma [Applause] the size advantage certainly favors particularly on 50/50 type balls hey Watson the running back when in motion Hellinger given plenty of time [Applause] six foot six inch Colin Johnson winning the 50-50 ball against five foot ten inch trim round he's in the slide he gives a little impact that really froze the defender and then Sam throws it up for and that's what you do when you have that kind of a mismatch on the outside 32 yard gain Oklahoma has given up at least 40 points in each of its last four games and they've won all four the first team to history of college football to do that just for Colin Johnson he was open he was wide open nobody covered it if Sam throws this lower it's a touchdown nobody picked up Colin Johnson in the middle of the field and the ball was overthrown by Hellinger Oklahoma doing something interesting personnel-wise they're playing with three linebackers on the field trying to slow down the Texas running game they left themselves very vulnerable to that drug taken in 10 Texas [Applause] normally Oklahoma's played a lot of nipple defense a lot of flexibility at the line to change the play that's another touchdown if he's accurate he might be a little bit too amped up at the start of this title game we'll Jordan Humphrey was open but watch right here he's confused he doesn't he blitz this late nobody picks up little Jordan Humphrey and two plays in a row major breakdowns in the Oklahoma secondary but Texas not able to capitalize on you're right probably a little bit amped up that ball just taken off on him but oh boy two guys running down the middle of the defense locked open in the first possession down in ten running out of time [Applause] little Jordyn Humphrey stumbles down boy for a first down at the 25-yard line of Oklahoma such a big body at me lo Jordan Humphrey is 6 for 225 pounds he's working on Norwood and he just keeps him away from the football does a great job of shielding the defender from the ball and then gaining a couple extra yards after the catch which he specializes in don't free their leading receiver for the year now with 74 catches he caught 9 for 138 in their regular season classic win against ou4 night Curtis Bolton may the tackles second leading tackler for the Souter's watch the block by the H back right here Andrew back does a nice job of sealing the outside of the inside run a nice job picking the spot by trade second and two Watson yanked down again by Bolton fifth-year senior had an interesting career mostly a special teams player fire all his career starts have come this season and he's the best defensive players on their team very active they move around in a lot of spots and again this whole first possession out Oklahoma plank primarily with Bolton Caleb Kelly and Kenneth Murray all three linebackers on the field at the same time they're not playing with a Nickelback Ruffin McNeil the defensive coordinator here the last six games took over for Mike Stoops who was to the loss to Texas Texas this is minutes to go in the first quarter at seven to three time for today's game fact a win today would mark Oklahoma's fourth straight big 12 championship the last power 5 program to winning four straight conference titles Florida 93 to 96 to the speedy Marquis Brown and he's ahead to the 41 to gain of 6 we talked about this Oklahoma offense the numbers that they have put up this solutely staggering Lincoln Riley had the Heisman winner in the first pick of the draft last year Baker Mayfield even better numbers this year historically good numbers [Applause] Janet's incomplete cadance turns the yards per play the record is eight point six by Hawaii back in 2006 300 game rocks rushing and passing at a game five times this season they've done that six times in the history of the program prior to this year Marie on third down and four connects with miles tees for a first down to the 50 yard line they're the only team in the country Todd with more than 30 rushing touchdowns and passing touchdowns and they nearly have 14 of each and eight straight games with 45 points is also the FPS record it's been unbelievable and Kyler Murray's ability to run has just taken them to a different get it up it looks like he got to the 40-yard line before he was driven back by Gary Johnson among others and it's an Oklahoma first up great opportunity right here now after the conversion for a play-action deep shot see if they get the look that they want they do some really unique things with their play-action because they run that counter trap so effectively single coverage with Marquis Brown right now at the top of the screen we might be changing to play again and he sends my steez back to the left play clock two three and to fake the Kennedy brush and that's good as he tried Marquis Brown well there is nothing that Chris Boyd could do on this one the first two penalties he made the mistake this ball was a little bit under thrown pass interference [Applause] it's a 15-yard automatic as marques brows slowed-down chris voyages couldn't put the brakes on and ran into him it's the right call but really unavoidable for Chris boy but they went after him Tyler Murray changed one [Music] the yards least 165 on the ground it was interesting though Herman described - talking about Oklahoma's offensive one said they're so good it's got a bit pluck and play for alcohol Rodney Anderson in the second game against UCLA he was their starter and a great back but this unit upfront has been they've been able to play with a lot of different people back at that tailback position would be very productive under 2-minutes to go on the corner they again run the play clock all the way down pressure after murder he throws it away Anthony wheeler came on a blitz taught Orlando the defensive coordinator for Texas said you can't just let him stand back there all day you have to mix it up and come back trip every now and then they forced him out of the pocket McCullen did a great job of pinning him on the sidelines and not letting him turn the corner and getting up fielder's Todd after himself at Wisconsin he came sprinting onto the field before the game I mean I had to get out of his way he was sprinting hard he had his game face on well before this would kick them last night into meetings third down and seven and a Texas timeout Texas calls for first timeout of the half 30 seconds it's on Orlando tremendous respect for Kyla Maurice I don't think I've ever seen anybody like him and also for Lincoln Ryland he said he's as good a play caller as there is and he admires greatly the Oklahoma offensive system designed by Lincoln Riley yeah and you know he said that the thing about it is is it's it's it's fairly simple in its concepts and they do a great job of fusing max protection and their play action and their ability to run the football and it's obviously a very quarterback friendly offense as Baker Mayfield flourished in it and so has Kyler Murray and as you take a look at how Kyler Murray stacks up with the other top Heisman candidates to a taco - wait Haskins he is right up there and this should go down to the final weekend as it is [Applause] 10% of the Heisman voters have already passed their ballots that's a very low they're due on Monday [Applause] look in the championship settings at these three contenders perhaps some others as well third and seven Murray now this is a design quarterback draw and they're going to lead with Kennedy Brooks alright so Karla is going to show past the lines can all show past but it's a design quarterback run with Kennedy Brooks as the lead blocker Marie gets the off day she needs and then gets down [Applause] [Music] yes there's some question about whether he got to the line to gain they're going to take a look at it on the field is that the quarterback slid after he made the line to game that spot is under further review so that's where the slide is initiated I thank you they they may be sequestered but there's plenty of food in that room no doubt there is a lot of food in that room we were fortunate enough mid season to take part in a mock exercise here in the Dallas Fort Worth area where they told us how they go through the process of selecting the team's ranking the team's not an easy job you talked about the heisman backdrop you're a Heisman voter Holley is a Heisman voter I feel very privileged to have a Heisman vote as well none of us have fought there review the ruling on the field stands is called first down Bashan and every but every voter has their own criteria for me one of the biggest things I want to see is how do these guys play in the biggest games of the year and the biggest games started last week and they continue this week so I want to see all three of those guys then we're on that I wanna see him playing these big games down there are some years pretty and clearly established at least to the minds of many is indicative that most of these voters want to see more from the leading contenders Kennedy Brooks we are approaching the end of the first quarter only has 86 yards of offense and so if you get a toe Tata Orlando in the first quarter you're gonna hold them to 86 yards and only three points you would have taken that in a heartbeat Texas's holding there eight point nine for the season her play for Oklahoma we should point out Texas held them to six point nine with [Applause] - but 6.9 was the fewest yards to play had in a cave although they score 45 points they had to use their last timeout because Riley is livid he's used all three timeouts in the first quarter the last time he used the timeout he thought the officials did not reset the play clock this time he's upset with his quarterback because that's something the caller Murray has to take control of on the field they have used all three timeouts in the first 15 minutes of play let's send you down to the field here's Holly roll of course Oklahoma was in this big 12 championship game last year but Cuyler Murray is new to this stage he's performed well on a big stage all year but when I talk to Lincoln Riley of Oklahoma before the game he said you know the words I've said to Tyler are be yourself you can't try to do too much know there's been back and forth shots across the bow all week with he and Ellen gur and his Texas team so he wants him to settle down and be himself but we're seeing them just not be unfit on the same page right now just not getting the plate Falls in confusion at the line they've got to settle down and be himself because he's done pretty good he's used to playing in big games Tyler Murray in the stadium then well-chronicled he was 43 and Oh as a high school quarterback in Allen Texas nearby won three straight titles all here will they extend their streak of touchdowns in the first quarter doesn't work when I get Kennedy Brooks driven back by Brecon and Hager he's been one of those players most vocal in think Oklahoma finally got a little swagger back to their offense they had really been stymied have not been able to run the football but Kyler Murray kind of came alive there took advantage of getting the ball back and now they'll get the ball to start the third quarter with a lot of confidence a lot of momentum - how about words that haven't been said a lot this year how about this
