for those of you out west you're well-acquainted with the Arizona Wildcats and their star quarterback for those of you out east I hope you consider staying up late for Coley Tate and the cats did you really think your day was done opening night in the college football season takes him out west Tucson Arizona BYU and the Arizona Wildcats meeting once again proud pleased privilege to welcome you into the broadcast booth our family says hello to yours Adam Amin rod Gilmore quickcast Nick we're so happy to be here because we get a little bit of juice tonight we have Kevin Sumlin takes over at Arizona for Rich Rodriguez as the head coach six years ago when he took over at Texas A&M had a pretty good quarterback named Johnny Manziel he's got a pretty good one in Khalil Tate here yeah and Johnny Manziel won a Heisman and maybe too early to talk about a Heisman yet this year but there are similarities between Johnny Manziel tape watch him on a running play same type of athleticism change of direction acceleration quite similar how about on the passing play hey they can both get outside and throw on the move with accuracy with touch doesn't matter what their body position is they can still get it done so there are similarities and who knows what Kevin Sumlin may do with that young man now on BYU's end of things they have a journeyman quarterback near 25 years old Tanner Mangum a rocky rollercoaster ride that started with promise and when we last met him he suffered an injury last season yeah I remember when Mangum began his career his first appearance on the field how about a Hail Mary against Nebraska to win the game this shocked everybody not just the folks in Lincoln but you know what how about lightning striking twice again comes right back the next week boy date another Hail Mary talk about starting your career on a high note he got that done but then the roller coaster began the injuries and the like and now he's got his last shot following last season when he towards Achilles ten months ago and he's trying to get a shot to end it on the right way this season cats won the toss and they want the ball first Andrew Mickelson gets us going to cap off your first college football Saturday jay-j Taylor will bring it out and he'll maneuver out near the 25-yard line he's just 19 years old and he's already a junior exploded on the scene last October but he wants to prove that the hype is for real this is Khalil Tate he's a young man who had an October like no one else has ever had with what he did only got his shot because of an injury and you're talking about a young man who wanted to be a quarterback his entire life go back to Pop Warner wanted to be a quarterback now you're gonna play another position he's had to deal with that ever since he is now the guy at the helm of this Arizona offense as he finds JJ Taylor for two yards the superlatives were very obvious last year when Khalil Tate did what he did on the field but off the field stoic steady and Kevin Sumlin believes he's ready to handle the hype Taylor not much there a set up third down you know Adam I mentioned he almost you know didn't get the shot at quarterback button for an injury last year in his freshman year you know he didn't play very much and it looked like last year and he wasn't going to get a shot Brian Dawkins was the guy and then when he finally got this shot that was in October so it was iffy as to whether he was going to remain at quarterback or wind up becoming a wide receiver boy did he take advantage of and he finds one of his top targets from first down Tony Ellis into the 35 yard line on a pickup of 10 yeah just a quick three-step drop let him get rid of the ball you know they're going with the up-tempo offense tonight Taylor burrows ahead for for a new head coach a new offensive coordinator different tempo different nomenclature a lot to handle for Khalil tape this year blitz from BYU and Tate with that arm finds Ellison again first down Arizona [Applause] we talked about him wanting to be a quarterback and that's one of the things that Kevin Sumlin has talked about is you want to be a quarterback well we you're such a great athlete we need you to be a quarterback first and then an athlete not an athlete he playing quarterback and he's taking that to heart here's Taylor again putts ahead for a good gain on first down did you think when he was coming out of high school that he had a legitimate chance to to play quarterback and there were only a couple of schools that offered him a spot as quarterback Kevin Sumlin was one at Texas A&M he was one of the few guys who believe that khalil take could be a high level quarterback but he's a heck of an athlete and he's got the first down inside the BYU 40-yard line and that's the part that makes him special you know he's got the ability to get in space make you miss and he's not small I mean he's close to 220 pounds and he can dip his shoulder and run over somebody if he wants to but his his ability to throw the ball the touch on the ball particularly the deep ball may be unmatched he's got a heck of an arm throw it high for Shawn Poindexter had the ball but out of bounds Diane Golic who with the coverage of the Sun gun don't question his arm strength from the hash mark to the sideline watch this bullet Hey that's an that's an NFL throw he's got arm town Chris Wilcox over there on the sidelines as well the shifty tailor a good shot Mike Irish Tonga a big sophomore up front for BYU to just snatch Taylor and bring him down you know when when you think about this matchup this Arizona offense against this BYU defense there's a lot of speed and quickness on this Arizona offense and and they believe they have an advantage of that and they will use that spread them out and also speed up speed up plays [Applause] doing it with a big BYU front against a young offensive line tonight pressure coming tape and zone shot in completes good coverage down field by BYU you know I I think that's one time he could have run and picked that up he had one guy spying him who was big Corbin kethu see who's six nine 275 I think a little shakey would have gotten by him that was his first incompletion a spectacular Drive up until they got to the 25 so Lucas have Rick who is their designated long field goal kicker is on an impressive Arizona tribe comes up short and BYU takes over when you come back out west the leo tape six of seven on the opening series but a drive stalls and a missed field goal gives BYU the ball in a scoreless game so we go from a nineteen year old junior on one side to a senior who's going to turn 25 years old next week physical emotional and a mental rollercoaster for Tanner Mangum since he took over in 2015 he and the Cougars start this Drive for the 25 manga fine squally Canada for a big gain he's got the first down and out across the 35 yard line don't you find Mangum to be a guy that's really easy to root for very you're talking about a guy who had an Achilles tear last season just ten months ago told us yesterday that he drew some inspiration from Kobe Bryant watching the video of Kobe tearing his Achilles and then walking to the free-throw line and draining a couple of free throws not many people can do that while the Canada pushes ahead so it's an or mango ten months ago a season ending right Achilles injury against Fresno State after the recovery worked really hard dropped 20 pounds to get into better shape and then still had to fight for the starting job it was not his to have despite having the experience moving pretty well throwing on the one intercepted Lorenzo burns one of the best ball hawks in the pac-12 last year with the deflection Oh Lorenzo burns eight that route up he completely understood exactly where Simon was going and will comeback route he drove on it and just should have had a pick there Gordon long looking for Simon at the sticks but in completes you know so Mangum in my view is a smart ACTRA quarterback really good with play-action really good with the short throws where he has a little bit more difficulty is that deep throw and the intermediate throw that that comeback is a long throw yep and you saw burns time that deep that up Brett almond will kick to the dangerous shun Brown a fair catch at the 26 both teams empty to start their season but here comes Khalil tape Arizona starts this drive from the 12 yard line JJ Taylor short run that'll take us to the end of the opening quarter allas BYU and Arizona scoreless on opening night that was a good loss for Washington and that I wanted to bring that up with you Alabama had a win earlier tonight as well we know that those are some of the frontrunners gihan teams that have a great shot to make the playoff this year tape on second down [Applause] see I'm looking for Devon Cooper that'll be with coverage spawn Michael and Sheldon there's a Washington loss hurt their chances too much no music that's a road loss in Atlanta first game of the year now if Washington goes on and and wins the pac-12 and doesn't drop another game now they're 11 and 1 with a conference championship and a road loss I think they'd be in unless they will they lose out to all than winning the SEC but I think it's a good loss at the Fowler Washington fan I wouldn't be upset I'd be thinking you know we didn't play that great and he got a chance for me Borden 7 for take looking from JJ 10 you know I'm not sure I like this strategy Arizona has come out and tried to establish Tate as a passenger and that hasn't opened anything up yet because BYU hasn't been threatened with his legs and when you get threatened with someone's legs like that you decide what we got to add another guy into the box you know you create more one-on-one situations you you open the field up but he hasn't run it enough to scare BYU with his legs [Applause] Michael Shelton will grab it in traffic and he will hold on to it tightly decent field position for BYU [Applause] one jet sweep pick up on force down Isiah Hays makes the stop we talked to you about the physical things that Tanner Mangum is dealt with obviously a rash of injuries at ankle issues he's at arm issues and then the Achilles injury last year but something that is to be admired is Tanner mango his ability to be so honest with everybody he came out last summer and talked about some of the emotional and mental issues that he was going through again his rod said earlier an easy guy to loot for as he's earned the starting job back [Applause] for a first down drag down by Tristan Cooper but following up on what you said he told people that he's dealing with depression and anxiety and Q that's not an easy thing to admit to folks publicly and to deal with the challenges as you said have been physical with the Achilles and then emotional the program he's been from highs and lows it's just amazing that he puts himself out there you know this is a young man he's putting himself out there and risking it all on so many fronts [Applause] today first down Tanner was a pretty good quarterback he was an elite 11 type of player when he was a high school senior goes on his mission to Chile in 2013 comes back in June of 15 hasn't had a chance to really work out and walks in for an injured Taysom Hill and throws to Mitch Matthews to beat Nebraska on a Hail Mary and he said the depression and anxiety he really discovered it in college but looking back now he there were signs in high school his dealt with for a long time [Applause] hopefully Canada a big hit by keys that should be enough for the first down a [Applause] great double team right there huh that opens up the huge hole Canada gets right in behind it that big sense of a big offensive line a lot of 300-pounders up there an arizona struggled to stop the run last year and they struggle to stop BYU two years ago launching end zone incomplete looking for 11 Evo for Adam a week we talked about that that is not one of his strengths the deep ball and that's a ball where you just gotta put it up and let your guy go get a cue you know I'm talking about yet your receiver go get it you know and he had him by a step you when I look at Tanner I look at the classic kind of West Coast style quarterback yep everything's in rhythm and timing yet throws between the hashes beautifully but deep throws that he's got to drive down the field or to the outside those are the ones that he struggles where's the Simon complete coverage by Tim Huff who's getting the start tonight for Arizona the grant transfer from UNLV taking over for Jase Whittaker who is out tonight for Arizona the senior who had a great year last year well this would be an opportune time for Arizona to place a man coverage and dial up some pressure Mangum and he's got the first down and more into the redzone inside the 10 first and goal BYU [Applause] well you just got a hippo on one of those shallow crossing rats runs away from the linebackers as he should as a a back batched up with one and then finishes the run with a tough tub finished 30 yards longest play on either side tonight [Applause] Canada right into the thick of things and squalid Canada's showing some muscle big boy football here right yep you got BYU saying we think we're bigger and stronger we're gonna put our 300 pounders out there and see if your new 300 pounders that you're d-tackle and noseguard are really big and tough enough to handle us and BYU is playing with the knowledge that they feel like they pushed Arizona around the field two years ago seven ball Roxy touchdown Cougars senior on a California leading rusher from last year started to really come on strong late 20:17 and squally Canada puts the Cougars in front yeah but the big play on that drive Adam was that third down with he PO getting down here to set up Canada getting into the end zone remember Hatake fire Kettner after last season that's firing BYU royalty yep he's got a Heisman he's got most of the quarterback records here that's that's not an easy thing to do Kalani shiitake said he's my friend it was difficult but we had to change the direction of the offense and help change the culture their offense gets the first points at this game JJ Taylor on the return across the 20-yard line [Applause] Arizona for the 23 shun Brown in space always dangerous leading receiver last year now a senior from Shreveport Louisiana so BYU head coach Ron ascetic he has to be pleased with what they've done so far they've been able to keep Tate in check [Applause] look at this display now watch his feet he kind of slides and skips back that that's not West Coast that defined three-step or defined five-step which matches up with where you're looking on the field that is kind of gliding dancing a little bit and you can do that when you're Khalil Tate but they want him to be a little bit more fundamentally sound in those drops [Applause] nearly on target for Berryhill but Zane Anderson moving from safety to linebacker makes the play let me go a little bit further on the drop set I talked about because in the West Coast system your drops are tied to where the players are in their route and your progression who you're reading number one and then if you get to that drop and you have to wait and hitch up and where's that second guy and they want to improve all of that congressional recess [Applause] sir [Applause] putting Baxter into the rec center first Allen Arizona but when we can do things like that we cares about whether it's a true three step or a five step drop right gets to the outside and he move and he's very comfortable he's rolling to his right throws back across the middle with arm strength and without mercy not a lot of guys can do them 32:4 Poindexter the longest play of the Knights right well power was there for the stop so Albarn a winner earlier today Cincinnati beats UCLA and for those of you who just watched Alabama shellac Louisville 51 to 14 say hello to Khalil Tate Heisman candidate got off to a hot start cooled off a bit now back on target but his team trails BYU's seven to nothing on the doorstep here it's bright well surging ahead third down coming up for Arizona Tate has done it through the hair so far but BYU defensively has done a pretty nice job of keeping his legs in check for the most part yeah I think that's right Quinn I'd say it's a combination of the old line and some of the play calling wouldn't you yeah but right now in the red zone quarterback Ron has got to be on the top of no Amazonas mind right now keep the ball ball in 14's hands Brightwell was out of bounds maybe the catch fourth down coming up the field-goal unit will make its way on Kalani citta ki his defense makes a stand again Lucas have received missed from 42 this from 24 to get Arizona on the board the cat's put up points for the first time tonight glad you're with us out west after a long day of football we've got more for you Arizona Stadium opened in October of 1928 a lot of renovations done but this is one of the older stadiums in college football good Sun for this late night contest BYU starts in the 25-yard line with a Canada run there's a toughness about squally Canada that you have to appreciate from a guy who's not overly outlandish isn't about pumping himself up necessarily he's more about in way why it's still a way wait we talk football with them this is a guy who's into music and rapping you can't there's this be soft he's got a bull it's old alright you get you can't be soft when you're doing that kind of music he's got it he's got his sensitive parts on time you buy I'll tell you about squally can adapt for this play here is Canada so he's a lighter it legs wraps lights rhymes but you know how he started writing this kid was writing love poems for his friend to give to his girlfriend this guy was soul and a very impressive late season stretch last year that's but he open to carry on he's got bad toughness he does edge to him clearly on the football field and I'm sure he's not rapping about love letters will lead right back on Canada this one might be short you see where they spot him here that that's quali Canada he just released an EP a little mixtape this week on soundcloud it's available to all soundcloud.com / 22 oMG believe it or not but because of NCAA rules the kids partner yeah makes all the money he can't get a dime from anybody who's wondering he's not violating any NCAA bylaws by any means that's a suit wrong that better gonna work that's where you got an opinion again Andy I think that's fair woman has to kick away shun Brown will not get an opportunity swathi Canada in his offense unable to convert he's got the loan touchdown of this game tonight seven to three BYU late first half welcome back to ESPN college football presented by Geico Halil taint after the last series out there with no Mazzoni that's a power conference you know something is up when you have your head coach your coordinator your backup quarterback and and some of the other guys out there q trying to work this out got to be an issue it was a little bit of a signaling malfunction you know they've got three signalers the green shirt one guy's got the the Hopkins light blue shirt and the others got the navy blue shirt and they're signalling in and I think there's some communication as to who was the live Sigler so they squared that all you know Leo's body language right I thought it was okay I would have liked to have seen him gone down to his young offensive line and give them a pat on the back after scoring three behind that offensive line setting up third and short yeah I hear what you're saying Q it sounds like he was a little bit more preoccupied with whatever the confusion was with the signalling out there trying to get that squared away and that had his attention and I'm sure right now he needs his offensive line and this is as you mentioned an offensive line that's been patched together for tonight tape deep shot complete looking for Devon creeper of is thrown Chris Wilcox has already been tagged for pass interference tonight they have tugged at the Jersey just a little bit yeah now see if he had just gotten his feet tangled no pass interference but you saw him reach with both arms to grab and that becomes intentionally impeding fashion of ferrets catching the receiver getting to him with your feet and looking back a little a little bit of inside info from the former like that if you're reaching and grabbing where 60,000 people insane you I mean come on how easy is that I did see the feet get tangle but you saw that pole first and that's what you think tag Wilcox for that panel exactly [Applause] I lead and a key man tape using his legs get some bounce he's dynamic and again that matchup with pakhi Tate's gonna win that every single time in my view Kalani shitake said we love taki taki at the linebacker spot he can rush the passer he can go back in coverage but sideline to sideline is a bit of a concern I mean there not many people in college football who one-on-one in space can take pink down nice cut by Tanner brought down by butch Powell a minute to go in the opening half JJ Taylor took over basically as the lead running back last year in Rich Rodriguez's offense now the lead back for Kevin someone's offense the cats take the lead [Applause] EJ loves it what patients bite ain't as he waits for Ellison to come free to clear the linebacker and then throws a dart [Applause] Arizona takes the lead tape strikes we thought we have a closer competitive game that a lot of people believed he would a three point Arizona lead halftime report with Adnan Jesse and Joey after this you're watching the pac-12 on ESPN Arizona up 5-3 on BYU as we get a look at our PlayStation Player index obviously this guy is going to be a storyline got it done through the air BYU's defense held him in check on the ground get some help from Arizona homies 6 rushing attempts you know for khalil tape and they did try to establish him as a passer and they didn't get into the endzone as much big like if I'm the BYU right now I'm feeling pretty good about what we did in the first half in thinking second half expect Arizona to try to get taint a little bit more involved in the run game we'll see BYU ball to start the second half start from the 25-yard line back in the broadcast Boone Adam Amin rod Gilmore Quint Kessenich what did you like in that opening first time I think most of the things that you had your bike was the way BYU played defense you know they really kept paid in check and they didn't give up any really big place so I think the first half even though Arizona was ahead hey momentum wise and emotionally the first half goes to BYU I think Arizona's probably a little frustrated and I think we will see some changes from them in the second half about that yeah we'll see the adjustments that you talked about with Khaleel tape Tanner Mangum to the 25-yard line [Applause] good catch by 11 people for a good gain on first down cue Kolani shiitake had really two points of emphasis for me in terms of his BYU offense right now that's stuck on seven first thing is his first down success in other offense they don't have the explosive playmakers to overcome lack of success on on first down the second thing he said was making connections in the intermediate passing game those are the throws let's say between 7 and 11 yards and they just have not had any good hookups or connections from Magnum to any receivers those two things need to change in the second half was Canada stumbling board for the first down on that second effort I would say Adam that I don't think Quint and I are surprised at BYU has struggled with the intermediate passing game I mean that's been a consistent issue and look whatever you see in camp really has no bearing on what happens when the season starts this is real stuff with folks coming at you now so if you thought it was good in camp this is your real test this tells you where your issue is but yo Mangum is a guy that is really really easy to root for pass attempt of over 10 yards exactly with Quinton rod with [Applause] dick toss no no Loulou go to town and he's able to get closer to the sticks to hurdle a would be tackled and burns is a would-be tackler there that's Tanner Mangum mission mate when they went off on that mission to Chile [Applause] [Music] [Applause] the Brandon Dawkins was the quarterback in Arizona last year got beat out well he got injured and take to go read transfer and then did not win the starting job at Indiana but and then he posted on Twitter that he needed to step away and take care of his mental health and I think all that's related to God like Mangan you know coming out and talking about their issues and how they deal with it you know guys like Kevin love's man I think all those disclosures help players and people who are just trying to figure out how to go forward Tanner is a very chipper jovial individual you say don't let that fool you never know what's going on inside somebody Couture school stock semana 31 and his wheelhouse as a quarterback really is managing the run game and the short passing attack and play-action now when the play-action is working and you get the defense to suck up he can get to the deep ball behind you but for the guy who just drops back and slings it that's not his game right now I think they're probably in to down territory I mean if you get enough here on third down I think you have to think about going for it on fourth down under pressure mandemus skates deflected [Applause] Dillon Kohli welcome back to BYU now Dillon Kali is perhaps the most interesting man in college football having started his career at BYU went on his mission decided not to come back to BYU went to Hawaii played against BYU last season in November and then came back to BYU for this his final season of college football the 24 year old the most experienced wide receiver on this BYU roster with his first ever catch for the Cougars after he had started his BYU career six years ago looking for Bushman and BYU has taken the lead that is the play-action default we've talked about that is what Mangum can give you when you want to go deep when you get the run game going and he finds his tight end down the hip down this build in Matt Bushman will play action Bushman is just to his left you see him come out get behind the safety on the run fake perfectly bro Skyler's sudden the freshman of his two-year mission in Chile makes it a four-point BYU lead Hugh was calling for him where is Matt Bushman on the freshman all-american and the Tucson native on target to put the Cougars in front fun one so far in Tucson Mangum perfect on that last series had the 22 yarder to Kali on third down and then the 24 yarder for the score Tate trying to answer a little tall for the tallest receiver Poindexter I think this is an important game for the pac-12 we talked earlier about how it's been sort of a mixed weekend trip for the conference with the offseason there it has been what's going on in the pac-12 and week one was when everyone focused on and see how well the conference with Duke tailor dropped for lost by tofu see that tandem Khaleesi and taki taki I think taki taki is the best defender on that BYU defense he's athletic he's fast he can he can defend the pass he's a good pass rusher and they've used him to try to spy occasionally on on tape and then you've got length and size up front with Portman fufu see it is a good combination they were both playing on the defensive end spot last year [Applause] BYU shuts it down JJ Taylor with a lot of room to try to cover credit to what the BYU defense has done so far tonight they said they would be physical they thought they were fast enough to deal with Arizona speed on the perimeter and surprisingly they've been able to keep tape off the perimeter and really out of the run game [Applause] dillan plump with a line drive right to michael Shelton with puppets in the Arizona special teams unit BYU's got the lead they've got the ball back when you come back to Arizona exactly what we told you about the intermediate throws cue pointed it out right away talking with Kalani shiitake old for six on ten yard or more throws in the first half two for two on the long ones that series and a big hole for squally Canada he takes it to the 49 with the way that BYU was playing offense tonight particularly at last couple of drives it's very frustrating for Arizona's offense and q Canada picks up the first down BYU now with good field position is starting to lean on him Kalani shiitake their head coach told us on Friday we had the hardest preseason camp of any team in the country he feels they did more live reps than any team and their players spent more time and volunteer work working Mangum flips it outside lilulu to tell Adam that edge that edge may show up here in the certain fourth quarter it is a hardened edge from a sense of urgency come off that four nine season and they took the underdog role and went to work well all I know is that shitake has a doppelganger and he spends a lot of time with me up in this booth you guys look very much alike I can't wait for Twitter to talk about this this is going to be great first down to toys [Applause] like this is it this is separated at Birth I guess separated at Birth how about it well and the great thing about is that the other coaches walked in the room when they saw Eliza - yagi the defensive coordinator I'm about to tell ya I asked him my first question all right and I go coach how about the personnel shift he goes whoa anybody ever tell you you look like Kalani segaki and Katara the freshman looks like a pretty good back right now he's got the first down for black he threw into the red stuff you guys had some fun with that those good stuff changing tempo BYU back to the TOA inside the 15-yard line it's like BYU feels as has cute mentioned they're starting to lean on that BYU believes they've got them on the ropes a little bit's they've picked up the pace here the tempo and they're getting after them with the offensive line there's big guys that you know they really worked with this offseason play fake [Applause] Dallin hooker touchdown BYU the first career catch for the freshmen as a touchdown [Applause] well the offensive line creating good rushing opportunities and the play-action comes right back again Arizona takes the cheese and BYU has another touchdown through the air after review the runner stepped out of bounds but the ball at the half yard line was it's gonna be first and goal he want you from the half yard line Tanner Mangum is a perfect eight for eight in this half and a rhythm that he's been searching for for over a year well and they got to the rhythm he needs with the play-action pass because that offensive line leaning on those guys and they were able to sell some run and open up the nice easy throws for him on play-action right now the way that offensive line is plan go right Adam Canada another walk in touchdown number two for 22 and impressive offensive series for the Cougars [Applause] we start to hear the chants from the small BYU contingent here a 730 mile trip from Provo Utah to Tucson Arizona and they watched their guys put together back-to-back touchdown drives squally Canada listen to the track that's your boy putting down the beach putting in the scores and BYU is up 11 touchdown starting to mount up the tension for Arizona fans is to remember lots of hype coming into this weekend for Arizona and their Heisman candidate and their chances of winning the pac-12 South Ritson guys on game day today thinking that Arizona's got a shot to win this division [Applause] there is Khalil tape in completes Sione's honky-tonking nearly had the pick for BYU Adams the pressure though from Tonga inside just watched 95 in the middle your screen wow he just walks back to sinner right into Khalil Tate's face and that disrupted the entire play that's a big dude at 340 pounds in Kairos Tonga a sophomore tape completes it short this time it's Corbin Kofu see and these two guys that you've talked about tonight rod are stepping up for BYU it started to roll because these guys knew a couple years ago they physically dominated Arizona so they came in with the confidence that they could do it again and you put it together for three quarters like this you start to feel invincible caboose II certainly feels right now they can't block them talkie-talkie also tape across the middle and nearly Tyra's tanto with the deflection that time when did he have a series you really don't want your quarterback to rolled to his right and throw back across the middle to fill because you know what's out there lurking there's just a whole lot of stuff [Applause] lot of bodies when you throw across the middle back across the middle there's a lot of traffic out there the good kick forcing Shelton back on the run Shelton looking to break free there goes Michael Shelton inside the 45 yard line 37-yard return for Shelton well his job is to make the first guy miss he does a nice job of that and then look at the blocking he has up ahead they do a nice job of not hitting a guy in the back and not getting a penalty but he made a guy miss and then he's off really well done Troy Young had a shot at Shelton and could not get him and BYU after another short Arizona series has the ball in great field position manga on the move looking for saving meets the glam inside the Arizona 15 is he playing with more confidence or what he is feeling really good about himself enjoying the moment does this on the move to his right puts it right there where nobody but his guy Simon can get it nicely done he is he's playing well right now he's feeling very good all worth it for six years [Applause] there's some tension for these Arizona fans who were hyped up at the start of the night Heisman candidate QB brand new head coach higher expectations BYU is physically dominated the third quarter squally Canada gets brought down by Tony fields really one of the first times we've called Tony fields his name in outstanding all-american season as a freshman yeah it just has been one of those nights where those offensive linemen have done a good job of getting to the linebackers fields and schooler and keeping them from being able to roam free and make tackles thank you you have to be very aggressive now if you're Arizona you don't have much choice fade Congo incomplete that's opposed a completion of this quarter rod for manga yeah it wasn't play action good point but you know if you're Arizona you got a hold BYU to a field goal here it leaves you down by T scores if that happened is two TDs so I think you got a sellout here you gotta bring a blitz you got to bring some pressure you got to ask your corners to hold up on the edge there because you cannot afford to keep going like this you got to make something happen here play-action has to tow and he's hit side of the line to gain it'll be fourth and short fields and haze both raced over for the stop tremendous stopped by Arizona cuz that looked like it was going to be a touchdown the moment moment the catch was made and how about this little roll of the dice here for BYU how about this they don't want the field goal they want to try and stick a fork in Arizona right now fourth down and one the line decane is the one Canada goes touchdown be Ryan number three for squirrely Canada and how about the roll of a dice like Kalani shiitake do you believe what is happening and this is a physical beatdown and BYU rolling the dice in we're not settling for the three points here we think we can just bury you guys right now and they get the six and citta key the head coach he's like yep yep [Applause] b-y-u wearing out the Arizona defense here in quarter number three we're back at 30 seconds there is no energy as q told us earlier and that arizona sideline [Applause] JJ Taylor [Applause] second effort works his way under the 25 [Applause] Ellison Goodspeed for medicine to pick up the 4-step important for Arizona to be patient realize they have a fourth quarter and to get a couple of first downs don't worry about the TD yet they've got to get some rhythm solid one by Taylor on first out approaching half a minute for the third heaven someone's Arizona debut this crowd is like the Arizona players lifeless at this moment there's a couple of first downs now for Arizona and JJ Taylor perhaps with a spark for the cats a 27 yard run and though they'll rush right up and snap it and try to catch BYU a little bit in a tenant here [Music] the final play of the quarter is a bright well-run zine Andersen gets into the backfield a tight one through thirty minutes the third quarter belonged to BYU BYU fans have made the trip a lot of BYU fans here in Arizona a dominant third quarter performance a solid start to this drive for Arizona jjt little maneuver in third down coming up for the Wildcats Adam Amin rod Gilmore Quint Kessenich what do you need to see from Arizona and maybe he specifically Khalil Tate in this 4th to get back in it well the Arizona fans have been waiting for Khalil Tate they've heard about it all offseason and there hasn't been much excitement from him tonight so they need to have him a little bit more involved we've talked about this all night the zone Reid has been sort of taken away from them but there's still design runs that they could use for him he's going to toss to the end zone [Applause] [Music] I've thrown Keenan Ellis was covering Shawn Poindexter kind of ripped them down a little they're probably saved a touchdown turtle honesty yes sometimes it is better to take that penalty than to give up a touchdown it's always better to take the pin on even give up a touchdown pass interference defense 15-yard penalty from the previous spot automatic I said forty men through their list yeah coach debut for Keenan Ellis actually a smart play not to give up the touchdown and to take the 15-yard penalty the pass interference number 30 BYU thank you Scott [Applause] back to the ground stop on Taylor Lorenzo valla taya redshirt freshman three games played Laster as a true freshman before ending his season this feels like a must-have touchdown drive for Arizona JJ Taylor caught by taki taki third down coming up 230 days ago Kevin Sumlin announces the head coach at Arizona and his team has a first down Taylor lost the ball momentarily venes Manan first and goal for Arizona a brutal couple of plays coming there is a nuff time Arizona to get back into this game patience for score here and then arrested people's might help me tape with the read Tullio tape with his first rushing touchdown of the season [Music] Adam this is the first zone read we've seen them run with tape and he feels the pressure from the outside and then goes the opposite way his family obviously loves it they've been waiting for it you know as we talked about earlier we saw Oregon really crashed the edge and take away the daily you seen BYU sort of do something Samaritan hadn't seen a lot of those capes from taint this one a lucrative one important touchdown for BYU for Arizona all right Arizona coming off a touchdown drive than their defense step up to I go back to something you said earlier tonight first down success for BYU was gonna be a key first down success in the third quarter was a big factor you know when you get BYU into obvious passing situations second and long third and long that is not their strength as an offense when they have success on first down it brings the the play-action into the mix and that's when Tanner Mangum is at his best that's why they were flowing so efficiently in the third quarter well that's exactly why Arizona has to be aggressive on first down bring some pressure and create the second in-law you are you to possession leave [Applause] another one of those Jets sweeps to a levy he fall and a good stop by Isaiah Hayes we go back to that last drive or should they series I guess by Arizona quints right desperation three now they've had four possessions in the second half three of them have been three and out and a lot of that is because they're desperately throwing the ball deep downfield and that's demoralizing for your defense two three now they go for offenses and getting anything done here and instead of focusing on being aggressive and taking the ball away you're still thinking about the offense isn't getting anything done for [Applause] and he lunges ahead for another first down and rod you and Q have talked about it again it's September it's not it's humid it's muggy that gets to a defense if they're out there for a really long time and these short possessions by Arizona's offense are only leaving that often our defense out there for a long period of time well that last possession was 51 seconds I mean that just does not help your defense and when you have a couple of 300 pounders sitting in the middle of your defense and they're forced to keep running back out there they get winded [Applause] Canada stopped schooler gets in there along with Demetrius Flanagan fouls a young Arizona defense last year with some stunts some absolute studs but very young then Derek bowls a senior step up with some leadership Justin Belknap a redshirt junior they need somebody to help leave this defense late in the game to try to get the ball back well I keep saying it they they don't have much choice they have to roll the dice be aggressive bring up wits and an extra guy or two play man coverage and see if they can create something jet sweep here for people it's going to be third down and long Arizona absolutely needs a stop there it feels like this is a must stop situation it's getting real late they need a turnover they need to create something to get a short field because they need to scores and and they're running out of time to have the time for that Kevin Sumlin try to save some time on the clock uses a time up BYU up by 11 bird down and long coming up for the Cougars Arizona used a timeout looking for a key stop [Applause] bring just three patola nowhere to go Wildcats get the stop you'll get the ball back as we read to five and a half remaining anthony pandey made the stop on the perimeter [Applause] [Applause] Kevin Sumlin in his debut can he get a big return from shun Brown who had to punt return touchdowns early last season [Applause] ey you little down it inside the 35 some of the Cougars are claiming that it touched a wildcat and see what you get a maximum of two only if the first one is successful now take back to work wide open man near midfield and Peterson bring two armory but don't rush you have to hurry to get the play done but don't rush through things so that you make mistakes now they get a score they'll have an opportunity for an onside kick or maybe even to kick it off weaving shedding tackles and has the first down inside the Kruger 40 Bodhi tree ssin with a good block on the perimeter again they have time if they hurry and they can continue to work the sidelines slow to timeouts tape with time and Peter said in the end zone nearly picked up on the deflection by water Peterson lost his helmet so he's gonna have to come off the field for a play Diane go lagoon with the coverage - I understand the desire to throw that down the field but you are throwing into coverage where you can expect to find a couple of guys that that was a perfectly thrown ball they hit him in the noggin he gets his hands up he'd be able to make that catch pull down a little bit though you think on that arm Friday or that book she did but if you know he can't do that that's the gets away initially wanna make something happen and it's through the hands of tailor and here comes Throwdown gotta be four down territory here as well right high pressure from Bracken el bakry the newly-minted defensive lineman for BYU the brother of Braden what I would really like to see them do his get Poindexter on one side of the field by himself a trips motion trips to the other side and pulls BYU into single coverage on Poindexter at 65 I've been getting the field goal range here to in a two-possession game take wild throw towards the end zone incomplete Ellison was the man there now from here there would be about a 53 or 54 yard field goal if you make the field goal it still cuts it to a one score game but a tough call here on 4th and 10 q looks like someone's given it much thought have her sick as hit 57 yard field goal last year he said from over 16 practice but I guess right now they left the first battle that's what I was talking about saving do earlier get Poindexter over there yep right on - all right you called it the one showing up for the six-foot-five receiver that's what I was asking for you go trips to one side - Poindexter on the other they've got to single him up and it's six foot five he gets a chance he's on the right side just get him in that little area that's a heck of a catch though - I know he's a big man but that's a heck of a catch [Applause] to extending the plane to the exam it was taught by Taylor and he got rocked by Austin Lee should shy of the goal line but its first in goal Arizona Taylor's stood in there and took the shot [Applause] Oh you need to go for two here [Applause] [Music] what a sequence there couple of flex throws bite aid couple of clutch catches by his guys and JJ Taylor goes airborne you go for two here to make it a field goal game [Applause] take a little sugar - Taylor is he Taylor was here he is more shorts the head linesman Doug Moore came out and said Taylor was short and man JJ Taylor has put his body in harm's way in a couple of plays well it looks like he got tackled high and turned around but was that got him at the shoulder pad I thought maybe they had him around the facemask but it was at the shoulder pad and the ball never crossed the plane of the goal line but what a sequence Arizona gets the touchdown it's a one score game with 320 remaining well Taylor was crushed this throw on the goal line Taylor makes this catch gets knocked out so he's not into the endzone but he comes right back on the next play and goes airborne clearly in Wow how about it week 1 college football welcome back college football we missed you now your question do you onside kick do you kick it off I think if you're Arizona you've got a couple of timeouts yes I would kick this because I don't believe BYU is going to take a whole lot of chances offensively [Applause] that's what they're going to do good kick to set up a touchback 25-yard line Canada get one first down yeah not not a fan and I'm not a fan then go ahead and load it up I mean I know they've got guys coming from the second level you know seven eight nine yards back go ahead and bring him on up there get him up there get him in the gaps and take away the gaps by alignment right now show your pressure go ahead and show it and make them realize that they got to deal with it they got to block it differently they got six yards on that [Applause] back to the ground good shot by Derek opposed to wrap-up squally Canada and Arizona will use a timeout here one of their two remaining timeouts don't you go nowhere two and a half left we're back in 30 seconds offensive courtney r2 has called a masterful game does he roll the dice and play action one more time or does he go with power football power football Canada first down for BYU a huge pickup still two and a half romantic all you have to do is follow your fullback Brady backery who just led Canada right into the hole to pick up the first down two ball security right here critical now if you're a BYU runner you know these areas on the guys are going to be going for this strip a lot of sweat you must secure the ball no turnovers on either side tonight - good call first and ten [Applause] trying to milk this crock all the and there was a first time black stop those was taken on clock is reset to run on the referees signal inside of two minutes now [Applause] Canada big hole and slowly Canada's in the Arizona Territory but a penalty marker back at the 32 yard line the illegal formation more than four in the backfield offense [Applause] F gotta be one of your guys not on the line of scrimmage there was six on the line instead of seven you have to have seven on the line in college football that's a punch to the gut for a moment for Kalani Sasaki that looked like a squally Canada run that could help secure the game does he start putting all these linemen in the game and whatnot and then you just have you got too many people over here that should be up on the line of scrimmage that aren't and that's your problem yeah Mike the Simon maybe takes a step up that's your seventh guy in the line yeah so first in 15 Arizona still has a timeout remaining [Applause] whose katoa stopped at the 35 and Kevin Sumlin will use that last Wildcat timeout Canada got a hit by Flannigan fouls and lunch past the 40 Arizona cannot stop the clock but they absolutely need a stop here a first down ends this game clocks going to get down to around 40 seconds you can essentially salt this game away now [Applause] it was Canada and for good measure a first down to cap off an excellent night for the senior after a four and nine season last year the worst season for BYU since 1955 sit open up week one with the win like this against the pac-12 team could now so much more if your BYU now for the pac-12 not a good weekend Arizona loses UCLA loses Oregon State loses Washington with a quality loss still a loss and BYU you think this win doesn't mean anything Kalani shiitake or Tanner Mangum that reaction should tell you exactly what this meant the sting of the offseason perhaps relieved for one night for BYU and Kalani shiitake Kevin someone's debut at Arizona a competitive hard-fought loss to Tanner Mangum and the BYU Cougars 28 to 23 the final score I hope you enjoyed the opening night of college football cuz we absolutely did Bharath Gilmour Quintus Nick the wonderful women and men of our crew Adam Amin sings so long SportsCenter in 15 seconds
