jb as cincinnati head coach marvin lewis tries to boost his bengals back into the afc playoff picture we remind you that you can get coverage of every nfl game on nfl mobile only from verizon with a chance last week to solidify their playoff profile the bengals let a precious victory slip away they squandered a 13-point lead on their home field and lost to the houston texans 20-19 and now cincinnati backs against the wall has to win its remaining three games and hope that someone ahead of them will stumble down the home stretch of this nfl regular season a look at the afc playoff race shows the division leaders and the wild card situation the bengals at seven and six in a dog fight with tennessee and oakland one game back of the jets for that final playoff birth [Music] hi everyone welcome to st louis greg gumbel along with my hall of fame partner dan deardorff this is the time of the year that teams that are not in it like the rams love to knock off the teams that are still in the picture like the cincinnati bengals but in order to do that dan they're going to have to do it today without their starting quarterback yeah that's right greg if you saw sam bradford try to play monday night you saw how bad that left high ankle sprain is he really couldn't put any weight on his ankle so he's going to be on the inactive list today and that means that kellen clements is going to start now clemens has only been a saint louis ram for all of 11 days he'll be making his 10th start in his six-year nfl career not a whole lot of practice time now speaking of quarterbacks the cincinnati bengals could not be happier the prospects for their future at that position are bright as can be because andy dalton's been terrific and you're just not talking about the color of his hair being bright either andy dalton every time you talk to a head coach around the national football league they say this kid has no tendencies that remind you of the fact that he's a rookie he takes care of the football he's got six more touchdowns than he does interceptions he's a natural leader and a tremendous grasp of their offense now he does have a lot of weapons in that offensive huddle and it starts with cedric benson going for another thousand yard season he's not a guy that runs away from people but he can get it done this guy the magnificent rookie aj green you hear names like randy moss and then a very talented tight end and jermaine gresham he can go downfield now at 2 and 11 to say the least it's been a disappointing season for the rams here in st louis but they do have on offense a real horse in the backfield he wears number 39. when you watch the tape nothing about the way steven jackson plays football tells you that he's on a 2-11 football team this guy runs hard as doma top pekko told us you don't have to play the cutback when you play stephen jackson he is coming right at you steven jackson going for his seventh consecutive 1000 plus season all right time for the home depot tools to victory dan all right well let's spotlight a couple people that are going to play big roles today and i think ray malaluka the middle linebacker for the bengals he is a run stuffer his matchup with steven jackson today ought to be special and then chris long has really come on as a defensive end for the rams he is having a pro bowl season already a dozen sacks of course he's the son of howie for the bengals real simple take steven jackson out of the game plan force kellen clemens to take to the air see if he's good enough and has been here long enough to beat you and the rams must ride stephen jackson he's going to get it early and often and for more home depot player stats log on to cbssports.com the cincinnati bengals fighting for their playoff lives the st louis rams with spoiler written all over them this afternoon we continue from the edward jones dome in st louis here on cbs in just a moment [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Applause] this was supposed to be a rebuilding year for the bengals but names like dalton green and gresham have been terrific and today here in saint louis cincinnati is thinking the playoffs are possible with a season-ending three-game winning streak and a little hope to go with it we'll have the kickoff from st louis next [Music] cbs sports welcomes you to the following presentation of the national football league welcome back to st louis and there is a look at sam bradford not in uniform today a lot of talk about how perhaps he may be done for the season and that may very well be but that's not the approach that rams management is taking right now man no we were told that they're going to take it one week at a time they're not that their plans as of yesterday were to not put sam on ir i think sam would fight that but i think we have to realize that his ankle is pretty bad it took a step back from his ability to get out there on the field and play on monday night he couldn't play very well right now i think it's the case that he can't defend himself he can't move around enough to avoid it rams won the toss they will take the ball first chance jarrius norwood on the run out of his own end zone spinning out to about the 20-yard line and that is where the rams will go to work with sam bradford sidelined with the ankles train kellen clemons gets the start he has been around for all of 11 days now in his sixth season out of oregon and realistically dan you do have to wonder just how much of the offense you can grasp in that short time well we asked him that question directly and his response was enough josh mcdaniels the offensive coordinator said kellen is just going to try to get us to the next play now those are not exact not exactly lofty expectations [Music] stephen jackson off the right side and now across the 25 to the 26 yard line the st louis offensive line number 73 adam goldberg starts at left tackle for an injured mark levore and there is no question the brunt of the offense is on the shoulders of the franchise's all-time leading rusher three-time pro bowl running back stephen jackson and steven jackson is going for his seventh consecutive 1000 yard plus season which is some extraordinary accomplishment got his man out across the 40-yard line that's complete to austin pettis for a first down clement's doing what he does very well and that's throwing exactly right and again talking to the rams they want to get clemons out on the perimeter they know that is what he does well and again it gets it away from a suspect offensive line so a good uh just a simple route by pettis just a simple out and again you know against the zone from cincinnati relatively wide open but a good strike from clement the three tight ends in the lineup the pitch for steven jackson going to come around the near side [Applause] [Music] a solid defensive line for the cincinnati bengals defensive tackle geno atkins has a team-high seven sacks from the inside ray maluga anchors the defense from his middle linebacker position more comfortable there than when he was outside his first two seasons and in the secondary reggie nelson's three interceptions lead the team he's returned one of them 75 yards for a touchdown well there's mike zimmer the defensive coordinator for cincinnati his game plan all revolves around shutting down stephen jackson he can't be thrilled with the start that jackson has had those will get another chance here jackson left side for a couple as he's bumped out of bounds at about the 43-yard line michael johnson and doma top pekko leading the charge you know everything around cincinnati defensively today has got to revolve around stopping 39 and forcing a quarterback who's been here less than two weeks to try to win the game and take it over marvin lewis of course a defensive coordinator for most of his career when he was an assistant coach nine years now the head coach of the bengals but they they desperately want to remove jackson from it and they'll do it with eight and nine man fronts even and we got a quick timeout here 12 50 to play in the first quarter in cincinnati calls a timeout [Music] in his third season as head coach here in st louis steve mcspagnolo certainly on the hot seat here in ram territory [Applause] that uh lower part of that graphic one touchdown in the last 20 25 possessions the lowest scoring team in the national football region through the hands of brandon lloyd on incomplete you know you're talking about the rams offense and their inability to score in a national football league where the rules have been tweaked and amended in favor of the offense and especially the passing game it just seems hard to believe that you're talking about a team that has scored 12 offensive touchdowns in 13 games and scoring less than 12 points a game is not going to get the job done in this league that's josh mcdaniels the offensive coordinator in his first year of course he had no off season or otas to implement his new offense and kellen clemens calls timeout so each team uses a timeout early here in the first quarter and again that is kind of a staggering graphic when you look at it last in points touchdowns rushing offense third down conversion rate sacks allowed which means your quarterbacks are getting pummeled they've allowed 46 sacks and at least they're not last in total yardage but you trade points for yards and steve spagnolo again this is a team that's been decimated by injuries they're injured reserve list is almost a legal pad long and when we spoke with the coach yesterday he was satisfied with the effort his team is putting in and they do put forth effort and we've seen you know craig we've done some games this year where you could say teams talk about playing for their coach and the effort on the field isn't there all right you can't say that about the rams they play hard third and seven jackson trying to turn the corner he's not gonna get there he's down at the 45-yard line giving chase and making the play defensive tackles aren't supposed to be able to run like that but geno atkins not only does he shed the block but look at his lateral movement there and look at him cover ground and fight through the block of harvey dahl at the very end to drag down stephen jackson great athleticism by gino brandon tate is deep give you an indication of the offensive woes of the rams this is the 86th punt of the season for donny jones 86. tate will let that fly bounce into the end zone for the touchback so the bengals offense onto the field for their first crack at it after this the nfl on cbs is sponsored by southwest airlines find our fares online only at southwest.com sprint all football no limits only from sprint and by the all new volkswagen passat 2012 motor trend car of the year [Music] as we welcome you back 12 minutes remaining here in the first quarter and andy dalton in the cincinnati offense with [Applause] jerome simpson the intended receiver on that side of the field andy dalton is the quarterback and the bengals just couldn't be happier with the rookie qb his play on the field his leadership abilities have been superb and that sounds like that's what impresses marvin lewis dan as much as anything he said you know we we knew what he could do in terms of arm strength and things like that we we did not anticipate his innate leadership skills that it took us by surprise and they're pleasantly supportive [Applause] and for maybe three on the cincinnati offensive line mcglynn in it right guard for bobby williams number 73 anthony collins for injured andre smith at right tackle and everyone talks about the outstanding play of wide receiver aj green the rookie drafted in the first round out of georgia and it was fun listening to andy dalton talk about aj green as you look at offensive coordinator jay gruber who said you know we said to marvin lewis is there anybody in the nfl that aj green can't run by and marvin said [Applause] nope third and seven dalton miscommunication there that falls incomplete and a penalty marker is down back where andy dalton was in i don't know why aj green stopped running his route personal foul roughing the passer defense number 92 helmet to heaven on the quarterback 15-yard penalty automatic first down eugene sims with that hit which didn't look like a huge hit well does he go does he go helmet to helmet it looks like his helmet hits the helmet of andy dalton and you cannot strike a quarterback in the neck or the helmet area [Music] [Music] yard line this is cedric benson across the 40 to about the 43. about a five-yard gain the rams haven't had much to shout about on defense but defensive end chris long does his job 12 sacks on this this season and nine over the last seven weeks the linebackers in his third season middle linebacker james laronitis leads the rams and tackles 111 of them to go with three sacks and two interceptions in an injury-riddled secondary the veteran quentin michael shows the way two forced fumbles and a pair of interceptions quentin michael is the only rams secondary player to start every game on second and five goals gonna go deep caught inside the 10-yard line by aj green well i think the question that we posed to marvin lewis while he answered it no there's nobody that aj green can't run past well now we have visual illustration of exactly that that is nothing but speed quentin michael the safety is just out man no way can he go stride for stride and andy dalton overthrew that ball i'm sure that it was halfway there he didn't think that green could catch up to it what an awesome display of speed by aj green [Applause] this is central pension on first and goal and he is wrapped up at the three-yard line that was a 55-yard gain daltons agreed boy we just can't again greg we can't just gloss over that catch i mean just getting to the ball was an accomplishment and then the way he extended brought it in with his fingertips what a beautiful effort again that's worth another look look at that extension over the shoulder a little willie mays action there and brings it in dalton to green get used to that [Applause] on second down throwing for the end zone and that's in complete out of bounds intended for free all right it's out of bounds on the stat sheet that's nothing but an incomplete pass what did you want two hands on that but that's it's pretty that's as pretty of an incomplete pass that you're ever going to see how's this for just one hand okay this kid is going to be special and when you anytime you start talking about a young player and you start talking things like he reminds me of a young randy moss high praise third and goal dalton running out of time in the end zone it is incomplete intended once again for aj green on the far side of the field well one thing everyone who plays cincinnati has figured out that andy dalton loves to try to get the ball to aj green whether it's on the left or the right and that ball just you got to credit the rams defense they had two guys there forced the high throw and green tried but he couldn't get both feet down and now mike nugent the most accurate kicker in the national football league from 21 yards out this will improve your accuracy field goals for this distance hard to miss from there [Applause] the big andy dalton to aj green pass sets up the field goal in a three-nothing cincinnati league hey tonight on survivor we're down to three tribal councils and two suspense-filled hours don't miss the season finale and live reunion show tonight only cbs well a member of the opposition but sam bradford had to be impressed with that long ball from aid from andy dalton to aj green and sam bradford still wearing a protective boot on that left leg of his he's been wearing it all week it was it was really painful to watch him play on monday night he couldn't put any he could put some weight on but he he didn't want to put weight on it and drive through throwing a ball downfield it was tough norwood gonna get a chance to return this one from his own two-yard line [Applause] and he's tucked down at about the 15. let's go back to that 55-yard connection well the rams were in the right defense here's green right here but you got a deep safety and he sees him coming and and that's it that you know that's just it you're in a position you know you got the safety's back and the safety from the other side michael he's running with him but again you had two safeties playing the deep outside of the field stewart and quentin michael and they both just get run right past by aj green those are terrific numbers whether you were looking or not on first down stephen jackson for not very much we get our first nfl today update of the day from new york jb and coach cower guys greg it is cam yeah consensus rookie of the year despite a.j green dynair 26 yards steve smith after a houston aryan foster fumble carolina on top 7-0 cam and steve working again greg and dan also jb getting a little poetic early in the day for that i don't think either one of us is up to rookie brian brian second and nine brian what is up play fake to jackson outside and this is complete across the 25-yard line to austin pettis for a first down [Applause] and that's good work by kellen clement you know good play action bacon listen to that that's a nice tight spiral when you hear it hit the chest of the receiver austin pettis and again i think josh mcdaniels the offensive coordinator for the rams has got a lot of different things to try to take advantage of what kellen clements does well [Music] [Music] jackson again four maybe two to the 28 and ray malaluga with the hit well i thought it was pretty funny when we were talking to doma topeka pekko the defensive tackle for cincinnati he goes well but you know when you talk about playing stephen jackson nobody has to worry about the cutback he goes he takes three steps and everybody on the defense knows where he is going steven jackson rarely changes direction and cuts all the way back across he is a plan and take it upfield and get out of my way kind of running [Music] second and eight philly's gonna throw it and across the 40-yard line it is complete to brandon lloyd for another first down and clemens looking very good throwing the football early on well brandon lloyd is one of the best route running wide receivers in the national football league his routes are beautiful he look at the separation he got on pacman jones gave a little shimmy with the shoulders to the outside pac-man took it and then he broke it off to the inside and kellen clemens sam bradford everyone who quarterbacks for the rams so excited when lloyd's signed this is his ninth game with the rams jerry with norwood in the backfield he's got the handout slips and goes down at the 42. gino atkins will get credit for the stop but that's a loss of a couple of yards yeah you got to wonder why a guy would slip on this artificial turf here he just overextended came down to where his cleats weren't even on the on the on the turf nothing was on the turf but the instep of his shoes [Music] [Music] did he get him both down [Applause] brandon lloyd to the 49 of the bengals and we have a penalty marker down personal foul roughing the passer defense number 42. leaving with the helmet into the quarterback that call is chris crocker is coming in on the blitz from the back side and again you know you know defensive players there's so much talk about this why would he jump why would he jump and then hit clemens in the back of the helmet with his face mask that's that is the look of a frustrated coach right there that is just inexcusable to give away 15 yards and by the way you're going to get a fedex from the nfl uh and your check's going to be a little longer rams now at the cincinnati 34. pass to the outside is incomplete austin pettis the intended receiver it'll be second down you know going back to crocker's hit you just there are times greg in this league i think where there's helmet to helmet contact where sometimes you it's hard to avoid because maybe the guy the offensive player moves into it or something like that but that's a stationary target there's you with a minimal effort you could keep from hitting him in the head he actually had to jump to make it [Music] [Applause] you gotta love steven jackson he is a professional football player his football team has won only two games and this guy works hard he works hard in practice and he really runs hard in games by the way the rams today wearing one of the great nfl uniforms of all time yeah well and it's the uniform that they wore in their super bowl season back in 99 because they're honoring marshall faulk at halftime putting him on there up in their ring about just a great look this is jackson and jackson is going to lose yardage back to the 27. and nate clements led the charge for his quarterback position well nate clements for years whether that was in san francisco or buffalo clemons always a good a good tackling corner coming out of ohio state he learned how to tackle in the big ten and he's been doing it his whole 11 year career in the nfl so the field goal unit led by josh brown comes on and this will be from about 45 yards out to tie the game [Music] [Applause] to the right lorenz remains scoreless the bengals stay in the lead 3-0 the nfl on cbs is sponsored by outback steakhouse it's always fresh in the outback and by td ameritrade all right welcome back to st louis everybody donny jones a holder here here you now he's look at the umpire right over the snapper jake mcquaid trying to move the defense out of the way jones kind of bottled the snap at the beginning but he got it down okay that's just a clean push by josh brown off to the right we have another penalty marker down in the backfield on that incomplete pass and jerome boger says this is going to be a hold against the bengals holding holding offense number 66 10-yard penalty replay first down that's mike mcglynn who is filling in at right guard today for bobby williams another look at the snap on the missed field goal you know it looked like it was it looked like it was on the hands not real firm it wasn't a hard snap and donny jones faltered with it momentarily and you wonder if that timing didn't throw josh brown off of it bengals back off 10 yards now first and 20 and cedric benson out to about the 28-yard line let's get another nfl today update busy guys early today dan coach 41st straight game with a touchdown pass here to lance moore not only six behind the record of 47 set by johnny united hey greg that captain ten play 84-yard drive back to greg and dan all right jb thank you your breeze is pretty decent oh well yeah but when you hear that record being held by johnny united it was a little tougher to throw the ball back then it is now [Applause] this is aj green aj green inside the 45 to about the 41-yard line you think there's an effort by the bengals to get the ball into the hands of aj green as often as possible you know that is right on the line of scrimmage but look at the burst look at his ability to get out there and go great block of anthony collins out front the springing and then the rest of it is a.j green and who does he eat up great so he's got a 55-yard reception that one was good for 30 yards penalty markers fly inside the 40 to the 39 the rams were off side it might have been chris wong they were in the neutral zone outside defense number 91 five yard penalty replay first down well chris long just anticipating the snapchat andy dalton did an awfully good job with that he really did accentuate the uh the one hunt and it got chris long to rock forward so the bengals with the first and five now at the 3-6 [Music] to about the 30 and that's another first down well aj green has been doing this all season long i take it this is a week 12 against cleveland he had receptions of 35 and then 51 yards week 13 in pittsburgh that nice little touchdown reception in the back of the end zone and then last week he goes up elevates for 43 yards and then the 55-yarder just a couple of minutes ago special special special i thought it was interesting talking to andy dalton and we asked him about you know did you ever do you ever kind of regret when you let it go and then you think oh this is going to work out okay he says all the time he goes out it's really reached a point where uh i don't believe that aj green is ever covered that if it's just if it's just man coverage i'll throw it every time now if i think somebody can undercut it then i've got to check somewhere else [Applause] has [Music] [Applause] doesn't want to look good no whoa let's not have anybody kick anybody cedric benson got up and i don't think james laurenitis appreciates that we have a fumble recovered by the offense for a first down well you almost by that did the ball come out before because if he hits the ground first if any of his forearm of his makes contact before the ball comes out but it doesn't really matter the officials ruled that it was recovered by benson and a new set of downs for the bengals just inside the 20. that receiver looks lined up offsides in the slot that's aj cream with that we come to the end of the first quarter one field goal on the board it belongs to the bengals we're coming back to st louis for more it's three nothing cincinnati you're watching the nfl on cbs back in st louis for the start of the second quarter three nothing cincinnati leading and there is marvin lewis and talk about a heartbreaking loss a week ago against the houston texans and marvin said it didn't take us a whole lot of time to get over there you know you see his red zone percentages he'd like that touchdown percentage to be higher but this team has lost four of their last five games they need to win out to have a chance at the playoffs that's a reversal penalty markers down as balton throws it away [Applause] and this is going to be against cincinnati illegal use of hands hands to the face offense number 66 10 yard penalty replay first down and that's mcglinn mike mcglinn the right guard mcglynn coming in there on the right well a great look at it he's got his left hand wow you can see right up in the face of gary gibson that'll uh that'll test uh how often and how much you've been working out with your neck when you get it pushed back by an offensive lineman like that we're good we're doing good so now dalton looking at a first in 20. that's why these guys this is benson changes direction nowhere to go and he's brought down forward progress will be marked at the 30-yard line chris long makes the stop boy for a moment there it looked like benson was gonna be able to slide out of there and get an edge but uh nice job of honoring uh your responsibility but staying home by chris long right here you know there's a bit of a jam and i think right there benson thought he had a shot at getting around the corner a little bit good work by chris long so loss of one on that play now it's second and twenty-one intercepted picked off on the far side of the field by josh gordy and we got a late flag [Applause] to be very eager getting up [Applause] this is actually that's already got a ton of problems the rules on the field is that we have an interception during the return there is no file for any legal block below the waist the block was against the ball carrier first down st louis so the return is across the 50 and into cincinnati territory and that'll set up the rams when we come back well it's been a while since andy dalton has thrown an interception last time was at baltimore back on the 20th of november well credit's over pretty good defense to the rams that time they fooled him with a cover [Music] jackson running inside the 45 to the 42. let's go back to that interception by uh josh courtney well he's going to try to throw the ball first of all only a three-man rush but when you look at this from behind he's trying to throw it to his slot receiver hawkins but he doesn't realize that gordy on the outside who is lined up and acting like he had coverage on the outside receiver drops off of his receiver and comes up to play hawkins and a nice job by andy dalton of saving what would have been a touchdown update time once again to new york jb bill how's chicago getting it done look for offense jb through your defense julius peppers come around the corner fumbles force the fumble israel adani jay jumps on at their eighth non-offensive touchdown of the year 7-7 seattle and chicago and a must win for chicago greg gumbel dan dierdorff [Applause] boy those must wins are all over the national football league the week before christmas third and three what hard except goes down at the 48-yard line jonathan fennaney [Applause] well fenay working against brian madison the right guard i believe you can see right there looking downfield doesn't aware he's not aware of the rush and again that is another face mask right into the face mask of kellen clements quarterbacks are taking some shots too brandon tate faircat called four made at the 11 yard line 12 minutes 18 seconds remaining in the first half it's the bengals three in the rams nothing [Music] can we remind you keep your fantasy football season going the playoff challenge compete against the nation for a chance to win five thousand dollars sign up now at cbs sports dot com slash challenge bernard scott in the backfield and he gets the handoff and scott tries the left side close to the 15-yard line let's go back to that hit man well you know you never know what's a penalty and what's not a penalty there's no question that fenay comes in and hits clemens right in the head and everything we hear from the nfl is you cannot strike a quarterback in the neck or the head area you can't strike a defenseless player there and kellen clemens took a pretty good shot to the head now he wasn't in the act of throwing was he completely defensive defenseless he was just standing there there's a lot of gray area this is scott to about the 17. all i know is kellen clemens took a really big shot to the head on that last play but he's not being attended to by the graham's medical staff at all and all in all dan for a guy who's been in town for 11 days playing pretty well uh i think so far in this game the rams have to be happy with what they're seeing from them there you go defense trying to step up here on 34. [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] a good stand there a good stand by the rams defense and they'll get their offensive ball back in pretty decent field position if they get anything even approaching a normal punt return number 17 nick miller stands back at his own 32-yard line for the upcoming kick kevin [Music] 45-yard line only a 36-yard punt and that'll give steven jackson and the ram pretty good field position when we come back the nfl on cbs is sponsored by sherlock holmes at game of shadows now playing in theaters everywhere the home depot more saving more doing that's the power of the home depot and by the ford f-150 available with the efficiency and power of ecoboost a couple of bengals fans here in saint louis as kellen clemens brings the rams to the line of scrimmage their own 45-yard line steven jackson in the backfield on first down rams down three nothing looking for points clements gonna go deep for brandon lloyd incomplete inside the five yard line double covered lloyd wants a penalty marker there is no well brandon lloyd got separation he got by jones and nelson and he got some separation and he was open but the ball was underthrown and that adam jones had no idea where the football was he just goes up in the air but that ball was uh a couple of yards underthrown 58. what's up to about the 48-yard line and another update from new york jb and the coach greg the giants have won six of the last seven against washington secondary issues continued jb grossman santana moss 20 yards out they're getting restless in giant stadium 10-000 washington that they are greg and dan hey we saw those washington redskins last week put up a pretty good fight against the new england patriots with the [Music] yard line to austin pettis and it is really the catch and now incomplete one official said yes the other moves in and says no that ball hit the turf well kellen clements after a little trickery here wasn't able to get a lot on it he was falling back as he threw it and you can see the ball really descending and coming down and there's a very definitive look of the bulb on the ground good job by the other official coming in at ruling that he saw the ball on the turf clemens just was couldn't put anything on that ball an open receiver couldn't get it at about the 15-yard line we'll take a time out 906 to play in the first half hey tonight on 60 minutes the new threat from the great recession plus meryl streep on 60 minutes tonight only cbs and happy holidays to you and yours from all of us on our crew here at cbs the rams defense is doing their part so far holding cincinnati to only a field goal we've already got a turnover [Music] star offense number 84 five-yard penalty still first down for tight end jermaine gresham [Applause] it was going to be interesting to see how quickly this cincinnati team could get back into the saddle that that loss last week against the texans it was such a critical game for them if they won that game their playoff destiny was in their own hands they've lost that luxury with that one-point loss last weekend it was interesting to see how quickly they get focused that's a good pass to the outside the green is complete just across the 15 to about the 16-yard line this aj green is just the more you see him the more you like him the more you just look at the talent that just radiates from this guy he's got everything the awesome speed he's got a 35-inch vertical leap he's 6-4 tremendous length in his arms other than that no promise whatsoever and blazing speed on second and eight this is and benson for maybe a yard as we go back to new york where obviously the coach and jb are getting paid by the word what a rookie season coach no dot consensus work of the year his second touchdown pass to the david jeremy shockey going to tell you carolina is shocking houston 14 nothing newton 30 total touchdowns on the season greg cam newton i think safe to say has surprised a lot of people there rookie quarterbacks going out in that game tj yates for houston not quite as celebrated as cam newton third and six now for the vendors they [Music] [Applause] a good another good stand by the rams defense and this is just an overload blitz steve spagnola an old defensive coordinator he loves this stuff [Applause] and you can see the first guy didn't get it but quentin michael the second guy did no one performing well on third down here today the teams are a combined 0 for 10. and nick miller is deep for this kick bieber did not get off the goodwood last time and someone got a piece of that one this is going to take a cincinnati roll and come to a stop at about the 39-yard line robert quinn i think it was robert quinn the number one draft pick came off the edge yep robert quinn got the block first round pick out of north carolina pretty good field position resulting now 21-yard punt the nfl on cbs is sponsored by mcdonald's i'm loving it and by kay jewelers the number one jewelry store in america every kiss begins with k back in st louis seven and a half minutes to play in a three-nothing game and the rams at the 39-yard line of the bengals well their defense is doing it they got some help from special teams now it's the offensive turn to try to make something happen this is cadillac and williams shakes attacker and moves it to about the 35. pick up before it'll be second and six yeah watch this on the upper right-hand side there comes robert quinn around the corner and he lays out and of course there's no roughing the kicker if you get a hand on the football and one of those uh scoring oddities even though he blocked the punt officially this isn't a blocked punt because the ball crossed the line of scrimmage and went downfield right here i'll be at a short distance but nice effort by robert quinn the number one draft pick what is that one second six this is cadillac williams to the 30-yard line there's some backward yardage and some leg power i'll say cadillac williams you always talk about yards after contact this is backwards yards after contact let's turn around one two three four a good four yards with his back to the line of scrimmage how's that for some leg drive and he's getting a little help from his tight end billy badgeman [Music] [Music] and penalty markers flying personal foul attacking by the face mask defense number 24 15-yard penalty automatic first down well adam jones called and he's standing there he's standing there with his arms out going i didn't do anything i don't know where the def i don't know where that could have possibly happened nate clements was the one who came up and made the clean tackle right down around the knees there was no instance of the ball carrier being tackled by a face mask i'm uh unsure of what jerome boger is talking about adam jones aka pac-man still having a conversation i know players always go it wasn't me but marvin lewis pretty free in his praise of pac-man last night when we talked to him too so for the first time in his career his feet being held to the fire and he's being held accountable well you always thought big plays when you thought of pac-man interception returns punt returns you know the a gambling type of corner but marvin gave him you're right some real kudos for playing real legitimate by the book cornerback so st louis now at the 15-yard line you know he's got to fill in because they lost leon hall to an achilles stops throws back across the field and it's incomplete there that was it's a good thing that ball sailed out of the back of the end zone there were three cincinnati bengals right around brandon lloyd and lloyd was the one who ended up on the deck first yeah we might give clements credit take a look when lloyd looks to the inside but the bengals weren't buying this at all that is bracketed coverage and we'll give kellen clemens the benefit of the doubt that he uh he aired that out the back of the end zone and just getting rid of him stephen jackson jackson with the handoff running from left side inside the 10 to about the nine boy when steven jackson sees the crease he is there and he he saw a pretty good one right here but when when there's a decision to be made about to go to the sideline or go up field it is upfield look at him get in there lower his head and when you tackle steven jackson and that's exactly what ray montaluga did right there with a good hit and a good stick that was two big boys meeting right there 34. 53. quick match this side lloyd nowhere to go and field goal unit will come on well the crowd was hoping maybe that uh steve spagnola would gamble a little bit being in one of those situations where the playoffs aren't an option always a ticklish thing for a head coach isn't it it is i think he just i think he's doing this for his defense let the offense put three on the board and and reward them for making a good you know reward your defense for making a good stand giving us some good field position let's at least come away with three josh brown from 26 yards out has now hit 35 straight field goals from inside the 40-yard line that one pulls the rams into a 3-3 tie 4-18 to play in the half [Music] there's kellen clemens head's got to be spinning even though he's been around the league for a few years steps into the starting lineup here in st louis everything's new to it but the timing with the receivers uh he admits it's not going to be there it can't happen that quickly i'm going to try my best crandling is going to roll this one out about seven yards deep in his own endzone he's got a screech out of over 25 to allow the 26 yard line hey vote to send your favorite players to the 2012 pro bowl in hawaii vote online or with your mobile device at nfl.com pro bowl or text pro bowl to my nfl that's 69635 the balloting closes this monday night i think there's a tendency on some kickoff coverage teams when they see the ball go that deep into the end zone where they just back her down just a little bit and i think that's pretty smart every now and then to bring one out this is to the 30. cedric benson showing that he's got uh a little change of direction of his own making sure people miss and that's really interesting because we were talking about stephen jackson and what did ray malaluka say his first three test steps tell you exactly which way he's going yeah and that is and raymond lugan we we saw the good the good hit on the last series between those two he's such a good run stuffer that's fun to watch those people at him [Applause] [Applause] chris long number 13. that sack number 13 of the season that's sack number 13 and this is andy dalton just holds on to it way too long he gets away the first time now the one good thing he did was he secures the football he's got two hands well he does not i take it back yeah i thought he tucked his right hand onto the football he didn't so chris long working really hard on a pro bowl season the sideline green tripped up penalty marker down [Applause] well rod hood is going to try to plead his case but they don't pick them up not very often pass interference defense number 26 spot of the foul automatic first down it doesn't help rod hood that aj green was in the process of blowing right past him well if your feet you know if you're both playing the ball and your feet get tangled [Applause] it's actually aj green who's trips over his own feet now now hood had his right arm hand out there but you see that kind of contact all the time aj green goes to the ground because he trips over he trips over his own ankle and if you're wondering did he hurt himself he's a little shaken up he's on the sideline meanwhile benson can't find any running room and goes down at about the 47. he was slow aj green was slow getting off of the turf it looks like they're looking at his arm or shoulder so he watched right well actually at first he was kicked yes at first he makes contact with rod hood's foot and then he gets tangled up in his own feet you're on i didn't see it the first time and right there look at him clutch his right shoulder he's on the sideline baltimore and the bengals with a second and twelve in the stream defensive midfield 45 to about the 42-yard line and that'll be about a yard short of a first down remember aj green hyper extended his knee earlier in the season it caused him to to miss some playing time missed a really crucial game loss at baltimore we've reached the two-minute warning two minutes to play here in st louis cincinnati three and the rams three [Music] just a few moments ago something bengals fans don't want to see aj green trotting off the field to the dressing room and you can see he's not moving that right arm he's not interested in letting it swing freely meanwhile [Applause] i don't think he did how about this rams rush defense today which is hardly spectacular through the season last well again they're playing awfully hard justin bannon that time was pretty stout at the point of attack we've already seen chris long and how he's working and on fourth down the bengals are going to go for it look at bannon meeting benson square up [Applause] what a great play brady papinga he was in on it [Applause] and this rams defense again they're not looking like a two and 11 football team [Music] and that sure made it easy on the officiating crew no need to bring out the chains on that cedric benson had absolutely nowhere to go laurenitis and papanga both of them left shoulder right shoulder right on cedric benson so now the rams with a minute 17 on the clock two timeouts from their own 43 clinton screen jackson caught from behind by geno atkins a reminder the sprint half time report coming up jb dan shannon boomer and the coach have all the latest nfl scores and highlights on the sprint halftime report all right that's twice this half that we've seen geno atkins run down a rams running back from behind that guy's a defensive tackle that's not supposed to happen he's got his man first down brandon lloyd out of bounds at about the 34. now brandon lloyd what a what a nice addition to this rams roster of course josh mcdaniels uh the offensive coordinator here was his coach in denver so he knows all about him and holds him in high regard you know we talked to marvin lewis about the dangers of playing a team that's having such a poor season as the rams are and he made the point we can't let their problems adam jones making the stop 39 seconds on the clock rams down to one timeout well you look at that statistic and you wonder if kellen keller clemens throws a touchdown pass if he'll even remember his last time hey gold 80. i'll guarantee you he remembers it [Applause] 36 seconds on the block again i i think everybody just has to look at this as you look at josh mcdaniels work in the offense but to think that a guy is starting and running an offense after only being here for 11 days he said no offense i ever ran before shared the terminology that i have to use here in st louis with the rams it is just everything is starting from [Music] to the 25-yard line to dinario alexander and whether he made the first down or not it's going to be really that's going to be just short nobody got out of bounds [Applause] just short and they're going to send the field goal which doesn't sit well with the patrons well i i don't know why the patrons should be upset about that and i think alexander he he's working to stretch the ball he gets as close as he can you got to give credit where credit is due a good tackle there by pacman jones never boo an attempt to take the lead this was much better he missed from 45 he hits from 43 with 26 seconds to play in the first half the rams take a 6-3 lead once again a reminder the sprint halftime report jb dan shannon boomer and coach bill cower will have all the latest nfl scores and highlights coming up on the sprint halftime report as this regular season winds down gee the scores aren't too important are they no not a bit it's uh it's the most wonderful time of the year are you going to be singing that halftime no i will not okay in an attempt to hold on to our audience remarkably we have not seen a third down converted in this half by either team been hard to come back brandon tate is deep cincinnati [Music] [Applause] runs into his own man breaks free across the 30 and out to about the 34 where david nixon makes the stop passing today or kellen clemens more than holding his own no touchdowns but the one interception thrown by andy dalton and hard yards for those two couple of power runners steven jackson with 48 of them and but keep in mind cedric benson going against the nfl's last 30-second run defense averaged him about two yards of carrick i don't think that's what they were expecting and that's incomplete out of bounds jerome simpson makes the catch but was not inbound so it'll be second down well keep in mind in a situation like this where you'd really like to stretch the field that aj green is uh is in the locker room mr big play for the bengals is in there being looked at that right shoulder four catches from 94 yards you have to wonder if that's the last we've seen of him for the day well you got to wonder collar bone comes into play hopefully we'll get a report this is subject the pyramid is thrown for a loss back at the 30-yard line by darion stewart and with that [Music] we hit halftime so the bengals will get the ball first when we come back to start the second half but right now that's the end of the first half 6-3 rams back with the spring halftime report after this message in a word from your local station cbs sports presents the sprint halftime report all football no limits only from sprint and welcome back to our new york studios in the sprint halftime report i'm james brown along with my guys dan coach shannon and boomer let's get you caught up around the nfl first half well j.b is it upset sunday well let's start here with cincinnati andy dalton he's going to be picked off right here by josh gordy he's going to take it off and bring it back to the 47-yard line bengals are leading three-nothing at this point how about jonathan fenet how about this sack you can see he leads clearly with his helmet against kellen clemons yet no penalty call right there that looked like james harrison and colt mccoy from a couple weeks ago andy dalton is a 7-13 one interception kell and clemens not at 15 82 yards not coke not what indianapolis coach peyton manning ideal suddenly would be like signing autographs but here handoff painter to donald brown 17-yard game would lead to a field goal both teams have the exact same number of yards in the first half 106 backhanded pass to chris johnson cj he picks up a good yard lead to a field goal and jb we're at the half 6-3 titans i'll tell you upset it's definitely happened down houston at carolina panthers cam newton no doc consensus rookie of the year this pass to steve young has two touchdown passes on the day and watch his jb fumble roosky oh that's it richie brockwell has it seven yards that's a great play houston has no offense gary kubiak says hey guys let's put that one in 21-0 carolina little trickeration there huh damn all right drew brees having another great day this one-yard touchdown pass that jimmy graham puts the saints up 14-6 [Applause] then christian palmer to call a shovel pass right there to toby gerhart goes in for 10-yard touchdown 14-13 saints drew brees 18 for 22 211 yards in the first half wow touchdowns that one to darren sproles 21-13 saints 211 yards in the half joe looks like the kennedy chiefs are happy that todd haley's not on the sideline how about aaron rodgers wow six of 17 59 yards sacked right there fumble because of tomahawk how about kyle orton 14 of 1952 yards right here fourth and it just kansas city does not make it good thing there's two halves in every one of these football games because right now the green bay packers got to get their collective act together last time they trailed at the half good while ago talking about chicago johnny knox fumbles the football as he goes to recover he's going to be hit hard by anthony hargrove carted off the field he has movement in his extremities he would not return to this ball game julius pepper slips gets up knocks the ball out of tavares jackson hands recovered by israel and donald j 7-7 ball game caleb hayney coach we were really critical of this young man early in the pregame show five time buys time khalil bell 25-yard touchdown catch 14-7 a minute 24-11 to have bears on top of seattle meanwhile over in the meadowlands might have been an omen in the sign of the day right here early in the game third and seven akeem knicks wide open perfect pass dropped now today then rex grossman he's going to find some of the secondary wills continue with the giants corner of the end zone nowhere near 20 yard touchdown pass and darrell young will take this and breaks the handoff up the middle for six at six yard touchdown off from eli manning interception and they add on a field goal late in the half right now they trail 17-3 okay after a reggie bush fumble cj spiller goes up the middle then he bounces back outside breaks a couple tackles goes 24 yards for a touchdown 7-0 buffalo at this point matt moore no one's covering anthony fasano wide open in the corner of the end zone 22-yard touchdown 13-7 dolphins all right this is a doubleheader sunday here on cbs most of you will see coming up second half of the day new england at denver while others will see the jets at philadelphia or cleveland at arizona take a look boom well there's tom brady right there i think the key to this game is whether or not the denver broncos can hold on to the ball ball control shorten the game take tom brady in his office on the sideline and certainly do not turn the football over against the patriots if you want to win the game well this is the perfect situation for the broncos and tim tebow coach the patriots defense are not very good and we're being kind when we say that so he should be able to run the football and throw it because roloffsky against indy was 30 or 37 for 353 and two touchdowns and i think people can pull up similar numbers and you know what and i agree with that and i'll say the one thing where they want to keep us slow but look for new england to come out with the no huddle and try to get this pace going fast because i think that's what they do best when they're on the road they like to know that's exactly exactly what i was going to say is the upbeat if you're tom brady you're telling everybody we want to score points early put pressure on team tebow to match them offensively and remember those games are coming up next second half of our doubleheader here on cbs but we thank you for watching the sprint halftime report we'll get you back out to the second half of your game right after this cbs sports presents the sprint halftime report all football no limits only from sprint cbs sports presents the sprint halftime report all football no limits only from sprint here in saint louis 6-3 rams at halftime cincinnati fighting for its playoff life but star receiver aj green left the field with an injury the question is will he be able to return in the second half and will the bengals be able to rally will continue after these messages and a word from your local station [Music] walton intercepted ripped off on the far side of the field by josh gordy hit hard and goes down [Music] there's our halftime score st louis leading it by a score of to three field goal contest as we get set to start the second half let's take a look at the droid razor play presented by motorola well it's really going to show how well the rams have been playing run defense and this time brady papinga james laurenitis get in there that was textbook stop on a fourth down and right now the bengals have found out it's a little tougher to run the ball against the rams than they anticipated yeah in these parts they're saying rams run defense but the fact is they have played it very well we were talking about whether or not aj green would return in the second half he left the first half with an injury to his shoulder and his return is questionable at this point well but right now i guarantee every cincinnati fan there it is right there he he locks legs with with with rod hood and then he stumbles and when he goes down he's really not able to break his fall very well and falls pretty hard on that right shoulder but i think that's a really good sign that aj green is back on the sidelines you saw him catching the ball so he's got the strength when a guy hits like that you worry about the collarbone and that's a very good sign that he's back now we wondered at the start of this day about how these rams would perform with nothing to gain other than playing the role of spoiler and they perform very well well it happens every week in the nfl this time of year where someone who's not supposed to win derails somebody's playoff express and for the bengals they've got to win their remaining three games get to 10 and six hope they get a little help and and and get into the playoffs if they lose here today to st louis it's their season playoff wise has ended once again the bengals will get their hands on the football first here in the second half that is brandon tate and it has been a pretty good showing so far for the hometown rams considering what they've done this season or haven't gone this is tape and tate about five yards deep in the end zone we'll bring it out up the near sideline and across the 25 to about the 26 yard line chris chamberlain making the stop in here comes aj green so he will at least start the second half well that's really good news that is really good news because it's even if you're not if you're just watching this game and you're not rooting for one team or another enjoy what you're seeing in terms of a budding young talent in the national football league with aj green this this guy is going to be on pro bowl teams and all pro squads for a lot of years if he keeps ascending the way he has so far this is cedric changes direction and out across the 30 to about the 31-yard line brady papinga with the stop as you take a look at some first half numbers and nobody can make a third down conversion today no collectively oh for 10. and we only had the one turnover the interception thrown by andy dalton josh gordy with that int for the rams again uh it's it's been a defensive game hasn't been a whole lot of explosive offense except for that one 55-yarder to green dalton throws and that's incomplete intended for jermaine gresham you know we were talking we were talking yesterday if you take a look at uh lucky us only the fourth game this year without a third down pretty tough to string together drives you know we're talking we're talking about the exploits of an andy dalton and an aj green rookies this time of year they really aren't rookies anymore are they in name only that's true that's they have that r next to them for the entire season but they're already uh halfway through their sophomore year if they were number of games they played 35. dalton this side and that is complete and out of bounds to number 88 ryan whalen the rookie out of stanford and that's a first down that's a third down conversion dan well it's it yes it is and it's a new half so who knows what maybe maybe they won't miss a third down this uh this half there's just so much to like about this cincinnati squad you know a young quarterback and andy dalton a rookie conversation [Music] still on his feet did that ball come there's people down there fighting for football it is still cincinnati football watch out let's not have any let's not have any yellow flags that's big number 77 andrew whitworth quentin michael i believe the safety for the rams comes in here you can see right there there goes the football and in a in an extremely fortunate set of circumstances it bounces right back to cedric benson it comes right back into his midsection the ball generally doesn't take a favorable bounce like that quickly michael again up from the secondary and this is something you really this is something i i admire watching a football team that's kind of downtrodden and the rams are between being hurt embarrassed at their record you like to see guys who are playing for more than just collecting a paycheck they're doing what they're supposed this is [Applause] this is [Applause] about three yards short of a first down once again by 27 quentin michael is playing a heck of a football game well he sure got rested at halftime talk about exploding out of the gate in the second half quentin michael who uh came to the rams as a free agent this year from the eagles eight years in philadelphia started off as a special teams guy in philadelphia and a darn good one and then a player and a safety playing from scrimmage he's given this ram secondary some stability benson managed 21 yards in the first half he's got 25 already here in the second half dalton [Applause] jerome simpson his man slipped and fell yeah he put a move on rod hood and hood just went down hood getting the start today because justin king is inactive today with a shoulder and again you can see this turf some of the guys if you don't put your cleats the side of your shoe isn't going to get it done slides right out from under your [Music] moves inside the 25 to about the 23. and there's another one of the reasons to be excited if you're a bengals fan and jermaine gresham only in his second year so the the nucleus of this passing game for the bengals is uh jay gruden there the offensive coordinator has got to be pretty excited about the fact rookie quarterback rookie star wide out a very talented tight end [Applause] jerome simpson on the four-year plan second one there's a player looks like he's lined up either that's an optical release one for the end zone incomplete they don't call it but i'm with you it looked like the slot receiver was well into the neutral zone [Applause] at the very least over the football well that's that's in the neutral zone that's so now a chance for another third down conversion third and one [Applause] not gonna get there again they don't even get close [Applause] once again brady papinga along with darrell scott [Music] and this is just this and this is a pretty good offensive line now they're going right in there behind right guard you know bobby williams broke his ankle last week but that boy what a great job of filling lauren itis comes in there and just flies into the hole so here's mike nugent from 41 yards out he was good from 21 looking to tie the game [Applause] and he kept it just inside that upright 10 22 to play in the third quarter and we are tied once again 6-6 well this was the last fourth down play and you can see green in there and he's got that right arm hanging down at his side and sticks his left arm out to protect himself he wasn't targeted on that drive in the next drive we're gonna look at it pretty closely to see if aj green is if he's out there whether he's a decoy or whether he's going to be able to participate meanwhile andy dalton has moved past joe flacco number five all time in yardage for rookie quarterback [Music] further to the 15-yard line terrific coverage 10-18 to play in the third the nfl on cbs is sponsored by southwest airlines find our fares online only at southwest.com garmin give a garmin gps this holiday season and by the 2012 jeep grand cherokee beautiful day here in st louis and there's aj green on the sideline well the good news is they're just talking about the things that ordinarily an offensive talk about during a break like that and it's not the trainers looking at him so we'll see if he's okay next series [Music] [Applause] [Music] that's one of the things kellen clemens can do he's a good athlete and again that just gets the defense the more motion you can show these guys the more you can break from the pocket get out on the perimeter protect the football you saw the big swipe with the football there looked like frosty rucker was gonna take a big swing at it's [Applause] across the 40 and out of bounds well steven jackson showing that when he has to he can get the edge he you know he's following his lead blocker right in off left guard and again more times you'll see it as a defender your brain tells you a guy this size isn't going to get the edge on me i've got the angle and stephen jackson time and again proves those people wrong by getting the edge because he surprises him with his speed jackson 39 yards shy of another thousand yard season and he's met right in the middle of the line there he goes to the 42 reign malwaluga then [Music] right off the bat they tried to get him on the outside that's a great way to get the game started pinpoint passing now this time he had his fan brandon lloyd open but he just under through the football so it's been a mixed bag but considering the fact that he's been wearing that hill for all of 11 days it's not bad at all [Music] and still made the completion out throughout the 49-yard line to brandon lloyd why did he get hit sam bradford giving him a hand but he didn't want any part of the hit that kellen clemens took you know clemens after this fake i think is expecting to come clean and gathers is right there in his way and again he gets hit in the head he gets hit in the head again that's another head-to-head that's gino atkins again putting a helmet right onto the helmet of the rams quarterback third and two nine gold eighty-one fifty-nine hey uh [Music] short at midfield michael johnson was complaining that the clemens face put his hand right in his face mask you can you can put it in there but you can't grab it and i think that's what johnson was arguing that clemens actually was grabbing it but it that angle right there looked like he just had it on it i didn't see him pull it or move it the crowd wanted spagnolo to go for it on fourth down but the pudding unit is on by the way his defense has been playing i think he's going to play to him makes the fair catch at the 11 yard line we have seven minutes even to play in the third quarter of a 6-6 game [Music] hey coming up next tom brady and the new england patriots tim tebow in the denver broncos or mark sanchez and the jets up against michael vick and the eagles while the browns battle the cardinals check your local listings josh mcdaniels the offensive coordinator of the rams familiar with both of those guys coach brady in new england and drafted tebow [Applause] penalty still first down that is number two you are correct you know this whole tim tebow thing dan i just i just fear you alert the hospitals because there are an awful lot of people that have been jumping on and off of that bandwagon and they're going to get hurt well the bandwagon is in different places the first three quarters and then the fourth quarter there is josh mcdaniels and by the way he's justifiably very happy that tim tebow is having some success first and 15 this is benson and benson out too close to the 10-yard line let's get our first update from the second half from new york jb and coach coach green bay finally yeah i'll tell you aaron rodgers finds donald drive with two yards it's set up by jamaica finley 41 yarder this is aaron rodgers 40th touchdown pass of the year setting the single season franchise record breaking brett barr now that's saying something back to greg and dan all right guys thank you bro that goose said they put up at halftime that was a shock wave around the nfl on the move gonna tuck it and run and we get a penalty marker here's jerome boger holding offense number 73 half the distance to the goal replay so anthony collins guilty of the hold and that'll back the bengals up [Applause] well here's aj green now he's running you know he's moving his right arm area is putting it up in the air he's calling for it so that's uh that's a positive sign he was open dalton wasn't able to get him the football by then andy dalton had tucked it and was in one mode second and 16. far side complete to andrew hawkins and hawkins ridden out of bounds at the 15. once again jb and the coach guys indy a touchdown could this be the day the bagels go down olaski to wayne 18 yards and indianapolis is ahead tennessee's ahead to tennessee and 10-6 and if indy wins that means pittsburgh will be in the postseason back to greg and danny [Applause] [Music] the rams have been stopped on defense quick slam and that is complete across the 20 to about the 22 that's enough for a first down there's aj green with the reception yeah aj green uh able to play i'm sure the shoulder is sore but here he comes in comes in doesn't hit it hard on the way down but he makes the catch so i don't think there's any question that he's playing through some pain but at least right now he appears to be okay so first down for the bengals now out to the 22. and pencil once again losing yardage on the play you know rod hood the first guy to be on the corner and then chamberlain came in right behind him nothing doing trying to bounce it to the outside here in this ram defensive line gary gibson right there did a good job of not giving ground at the point of attack going laterally down the line of scrimmage the rams have been on the real purpose defense today [Applause] they're not behind which is a plus for them on a custom territory but this side nice defensive play made out here on the corner by josh gordy who had an interception earlier [Applause] and you're right about that greg that was a nice break on the ball by gordy [Music] this is just dalton comes back over and throws a you know throws a pretty good ball although it looked to be just a wee bit back behind simpson but still that was a good effort by josh [Applause] lots of movement up front and this is going to make a third and 12 a lot longer false start offense the left side of the line of scrimmage before the center snapped the ball it looked a lot five-yard penalty replay third down it looked a lot like andy dalton may have not been the only one who knew what the snap was supposed to be well i think kyle cook the center i think everybody knew what the snap count was except for cook because the entire offense went in motion and he's still he's still squatting over the ball when your referee just comes close to saying these guys that's that's 10 guys take your pick third and 17. amazing he's the guy that doesn't get penalized even though he didn't snap [Applause] dalton gonna give it train ahead to pyramid and pierman out to about the 26-yard line that'll be well short of a first down and cincinnati will be forced to kick and there's a there's a concession to a rookie quarterback let's uh let's go ahead hand it off punt it away and let's let's try to get this ball over on the other side of the 50-yard line without a turnover that's nick miller dropping back at his own 30-yard line for the punt gets a dandy off here and made at the 31-yard line three minutes 20 seconds to play in the third anybody's game 6-6 [Music] the nfl on cbs is sponsored by the droid razor by motorola droid strong razor sharp and by bud light the official beer sponsor of the nfl here we go just 320 remaining here in the third quarter and uh times growing short for these cincinnati bengals who are on the edge of the afc playoff picture they are one game behind the new york jets in the tie with tennessee open starting this day at 7-6 580. on first down stephen jackson maybe a yard from 32. this is just living proof that games don't always work out then play according to form this was supposed to be pretty much of a cakewalk for the bengals uh the rams were going to roll over and play dead and say good luck in the playoffs well as we all know that's not the way it works in the national football league guys like mike zimmer know it marvin lewis knows it 180. what's up [Music] [Music] only one network launched the most new hits this season with shows like two broke girls unforgettable and person of interest only cbs saw that hit maulaluga hit on stephen jackson what did he tell us yesterday dan they've been talking all week long about how they don't want to be on stephen jackson's highlight what except for seven on third down nate clements off the corner boy that was perfectly timed and kellen clemens took a big hit completely from the blind side and he didn't he didn't feel that coming at all and he luckily he saw it at the last second oh you can see he just he was able to duck and come down at the last minute that was a well-timed blitz by nate clements that was a veteran blitz an 11-year guy that's the way you do it looks like he'll get a return out of this one back to his own 20-yard line nice move up the sideline with reading rule inside the 30 inside the 25 and out of bounds and a late penalty marker well the penalty marker is down towards the end of the return that's a 54-yard kick and a 56-yard return and let's see what happens here on the tail end at the end of the turn while the runner was out of bounds personal foul unnecessary roughness chicken team number 37 second act while the runner was out of bounds passages to the goal first down well as if the return wasn't tough enough james butler has more yardage look at that move right there let's watch it yeah that's you're you're standing you're standing four or five what are you you're good five six feet out of bounds boy and check out this nice little move by brandon tate right there at full speed and jones can do nothing but wave at him as he goes by that just wasn't smart by butler totally unnecessary this is bernard scott scott for the hole up the middle inside the five to about the two well cincinnati was in desperate need of a big play and brandon tate delivered and now can they capitalize on this good field position this is their third red zone trip today they have a field goal and an interception to show for the first two [Applause] [Music] shoulder again and he comes up pointing to the sideline say i don't i'm not sure i can do [Music] use of this hands to the face defense number 20. half suggested to the goal first time darion stewart well he drew the and they're just saying that the hand you know you you're allowed to strike that receiver as he leaves but you can't jam him in the facemask you can't have one of your hands just drive right into his face mask and as you can see aj green is in pain and scott follows him around the left side just shy of the goal line boy it seems so far in this game that the smaller the distance that the bengals need to pick up the tougher it is we saw them really struggle on some real short yardage conversions the rams are giving up yardage and very grudgingly aj green still on the sideline second and goal and scott in the backfield scott left side touchdown bernard scott with his second rushing touchdown of the season and the first touchdown of this football game as we've had nothing but field goals to this point and that is the way you capitalize on on your special teams delivering good field position good surge off the left side gresham gets a little kick out block great pull by mike mcglinn mclean comes around he's good final seconds of the third quarter upcoming 12 seconds to play in the third first touchdown of the day belongs to the cincinnati bengal and they lead it 13-6 cincinnati just grabbed the lead 13-6 with 12 seconds to play here in the third quarter jarius norwood is deep for the ram who are 1 and 50 since the start of the 07 season when trailing after three that doesn't speak well for coming from behind you want to say that again one and 50. since the start of the 07 season when trailing after three the problem is that this there it is in black and white right in front of this team is just so severely points challenged averaging less than 12 points a game it just puts such strain on your defense and your special teams you you can't make one mistake because if you do it it's the margin throwing the other way and that lance is but a pickup of only about two maybe three and that brings us to the end of the third quarter 13-6 bengals we're back to st louis after this message and to work from your local station you're watching the nfl on cbs [Music] that's a look at the afc playoff picture and tennessee down by 11 as we speak if they lose pittsburgh clinches at least a wild card spot well of course cincinnati is really hoping that tennessee loses that aids their cause if they're able to win today they've got to take care of their own business up by a touchdown welcome back as we start the fourth quarter everyone second and seven the pitch for jackson right side lockers in front of him trying to turn the corner and he's out of bounds at about the 25-yard line ray malaluga ran him out of bounds well raymond luga missed three games earlier this season with an ankle and he's getting back to the point now where he's really able to get some good quality practice in and that is a good look at a middle linebacker how you run all the way to the sideline and you don't allow the back to turn up field that was that was a really nice piece of running by a guy who's not really known as a real speedster to the sidelines you can tell that ankle is better 180. [Music] looking for their first conversion on third down today and that is complete on the far side of the field austin pettis there is a third down conversion well pettis the third round draft pick of the team is here that was a nice catch kellen clemens working the field you can see pennis wasn't his first option and under pressure but look at that grab by pettis that's that is one of those that you'll see dropped probably more often than it's caught his uncle was gary pettis grandfather dell rice [Music] cadillac williams penalty marker flies from the backfield as cadillac gets himself a first down but let's check the flag well when there's that hole yeah offense number 62. i know you're with your penalty that's not holding dahl and another penalty flag well harvey dahl expressed his displeasure to jerome boger and drew another penalty that came right through the referee's microphone everyone in the crowd heard it we apologize offense number 62 10 yard penalty at the conclusion of that play unsportsmanlike conduct offense number 62 disrespectfully objective official half a distance for the goal still first down and our dahl is coming off the field well yeah and harvey dahl got right in the face of jerome boger while he had his referee's microphone still on and used the profanity that everyone in the stadium heard and all of you at home heard [Music] and we'll apologize for that and uh in lieu of the fact that mr dahl can't kevin hughes replaces him in the lineup and now this backs the rams up all the way to the 10-yard line the national football league is not major league baseball kicking dirt on the shoes and the officials in the national football league are in a position you do not disrespect them in any shape manner or form you expect to get away with and that's the way it ought to be [Applause] first and third cadillac williams [Applause] to about the 18 once again jb in the coach in new york greg indy looking for a win number one playing for pride yet tennessee's playing for a playoff spot and yet right now jacob lacy indianapolis 32 yards 20-6 pride is powerful jb they added a field goal like you said coached 26 12 53 left in regulation greg jb thank you harvey dahl back on the field second and [Music] this is jackson can't get out of the backfield and again keep in mind this is a quarterback that has been playing for the rams for 11 days so i know the crowd is a little restless but there is a limit to how much of you know forget the the playbook he doesn't have any of that he has some of the games primary responsibilities [Music] out of bounds at about the 28 yard line not nearly enough for a first down carlos no and have a penalty marker on this side of the field [Music] that penalties declined fourth down and you'll see it sometimes on a screen if it uh is either a little slow developing or the offensive lineman doesn't have enough discipline to hover around that line of scrimmage a lot of times you'll see him turn up field in that time jason brown was about three yards downfield before the pass was thrown tape we have 11 45 to play we have a penalty marker down on the field [Music] and the linen is beginning to fly here in the second half during the return holding off receiving team number 51. 10-yard penalty cincinnati keeps the ball first down so dan scoota will be called for that penalty and now we'll take a break 13-6 pengles [Music] [Applause] being in a close game in the fourth quarter nothing new for the cincinnati bengals 12 of them this season [Applause] from kj green split down here at the bottom of your screen across the 30 to about the 33-yard line well you got to give the kid credit that's part of learning how to play this game is playing through pain the doctors tell you you can't injure it anymore [Music] nice throw by andy dalton when you hear the pass land like that you know it's got a little mustard on it by jerome simpson boy cedric benson has been having problems today holding on to the football third time today it's come loose remember that he's been fortunate one time it bounced right back to him and again see how he's got it away from his body and cedric benson has been around too long and quentin michael again what a game he's playing for the rams cedric benson has been in this game too long to be to think he can get away getting that ball away from his torso fingertips of benson and here comes a flag [Applause] they're going to say cedric benson was in a defenseless position and there was helmet to helmet [Music] [Applause] personal foul unnecessary roughness defense shooting number 57 with the helm of contact on the receiver 15 yard penalty automatic first down chris chamberlain the linebacker coming up with the hit right here he comes the second one he went up yeah he put the laurinitis was in there first but it's that one right there where he comes in he led with his head and then he hit him with his forearm in the helmet you just can't even though it wasn't a perfect hit on the head i think the intent was obvious and the forearm definitely hit him in the head on first down end this is andrew hawkins waits for a block and is out of bounds inside the 25. and let's check in once again with jb in the coach kansas city leonard pope 33 yards on this play action right here takes it down could this be the day the green bay loses their first game in over a year that set up a field goal and of course kansas city up by five coach we'll see 11 28 left in regulation back to greg and dan all right guys thank you meanwhile second and two for the bengals things are starting to get a little chippy down on the field pencil has the first down and more inside the 10 it'll be first and goal [Applause] we have well we had whistles blowing all over the place i think maybe just trying to get guys separated andrew whitworth when we're in that replay the play was over personal foul unnecessary roughness defense number 57. [Applause] oh chris chamberlain hasn't had a great five minutes no back-to-back personal fouls and he he looks injured i was saying earlier that andrew whitworth was involved while we were back in new york it wasn't there was no penalty but again when that's why i'm talking about it getting chippy a lot of pushing and shoving and now look at this [Music] [Applause] and unfortunately for the rams this has been a pattern that they have seen all year where their defense plays hard it plays really well for a half or three quarters and then they appear to get worn down because their offense doesn't score any points and then these have these things start to happen in the fourth quarter and that was again a good physical drive by the bengals but aided greatly by some st louis rams penalties second straight drive that produced a touchdown for the bengals [Applause] legion's kick is good [Music] they go 80 yards in five plays cedric benson takes it in it is a 20-6 lead for the bengals the nfl on cbs is sponsored by geico where 15 minutes could save you 15 or more on car insurance walmart save money live better walmart and by the droid razor thin is no longer frail only at verizon [Music] along with our producer mark wolf our director bob fishman greg gumbel dan deardor for the rest of our cbs sports crew happy holidays to you and yours for all of us cincinnati at one point trailed 6-3 and scored 17 straight [Music] and out of bounds at about the 18-yard line jabril wilson with the hit kellen clements back on offense in an age where throwing the football is the thing andy dalton has taken full advantage fifth rookie quarterback with 3 000 passing yards you think so three of the five have done it in the last two years there's one of them sam bradford again if you weren't with us at the beginning wearing a walking boot with a high ankle sprain on his left foot that's complete across the 25 to the 26 yard line to austin pettis and clemens running a little hurry up now two touchdowns away you don't have a choice but again how much how hard can this be to run a quick two-minute drill for a quarterback who's been here for less than two weeks jackson going nowhere courtesy of frosty rucker and a little scramble for the football down there well the officiating crew acting like he was down and forward progress going to be marked up at the 25. [Applause] [Music] and the ball does start to come out but the whistles were blowing and when he hit him marvin just threw the challenge he was going to throw the flag although it looked like when he was on the ground that he got the ball back and he's going to argue that the ball came out before he was well that's all well and good but he's got to also have someone from cincinnati recover it there is no challenge on the play the rule on the field was for progress not a fumble third down all right that's a good job by jerome boger of explaining it that once the whistles start blowing and they call forward progress that play is over regardless of what happens after that [Music] and the fans are reacting to what they see on the screen here the rams are asking for the play clock to be set back to 25 and they get their wish but again we're back to this you know how hard can it be for kellen clements to run a hurry up offense again this is this just isn't easily done with just a few practices 180. [Music] [Applause] now the rams electing to punt rather than go for it from their own 25-yard line with a fourth and five and this is the problem you pointed out earlier dan that without a sustained offense that defense gets worn down it's just put under enormous pressure this one will sail out of bounds and we'll see where this one gets marked it will be at about the 42-yard line 20-6 cincinnati with the ball and the lead [Music] the nfl on cbs is sponsored by jared the gallery of jewelry with five times the selection of ordinary jewelry stores and by subway restaurants give a 25 subway card today [Music] seven minutes 44 seconds to play here in the fourth quarter cincinnati with the ball and the lead as things beginning to fall right for them and their playoff aspirations are concerned this is cedric benson down at the 40-yard line and let's get another update from new york guys greg up next most we'll see patriots at broncos and you're going to see a contrast of styles tom brady wants to get this thing fast paced tempo no huddle and fishing early and then tim tebow win make it ugly get it the fourth quarter tebow time and just find a way to win brady tebow coming up next double hitter action here on cbs back to greg and dan all right guys thank you now that is appointment television golf to this side has remained precious and he is forward to about the 43. well i had a nice conversation with josh mcdaniels the offensive coordinator of the rams and of course he was tom brady's offensive coordinator in new england during that 07 season when they had the undefeated regular season and then of course he drafted tim tebow and i asked him i said are you happy for tim tebow and aren't you happy for yourself and he said you know i always believed in tim tebow but i can tell you one thing tim tebow has always believed in himself and he goes yes i'm happy for both of us incomplete robert quinn who has been a real pest for the bengals today [Applause] a good look and he he was able to read that and robert quinn is uh he's an exciting young talent remember he didn't play his senior year because of being suspended and they got a big big upside he only played i think like 25 games in college barely got that one away fair catch called for and made by nick miller at about the 21-yard line 6-14 to play here in regulation and tomorrow on cbs hawaii 5-0 is turning up the heat laying down the law don't miss a minute tomorrow only cbs well when steve spagnolo the head coach of the rams is going to talk about this thing afterwards one of the numbers he's going to look at that's going to stick out right now the rams on third down are one of 11. and it is impossible to have any offensive continuity whatsoever if that's your conversion rate on third down your punters going to be busy tough to get your defense any rest on the sidelines too keller time over the middle jackson has it shakes a tackler he's carrying on a conversation he and nate clements are going out don't uh again these it's clements has got the lead and steven jackson's got not a whole lot of positive things happening for his team but he's still playing this is jackson again and they clement again they're still talking that's just a running conversation well they're a couple of they're a couple of veterans jackson's in his eighth year clements is in his his 11th they've been to a couple rodeos jackson out of the backfield across the 40. drags a couple of tacklers to the 44. and that'll be another first down for the round coming up on five minutes to play here in the fourth quarter this drive has been the stephen jackson show [Applause] [Music] [Applause] intended for austin pettis and he's holding that on hand pretty gingerly he flashed the thumbs up over to the sidelines let's see does he hit it on somebody's helmet at the end of this that's normally what happens yep wow a direct hit right into the top of geno atkins helmet i believe oh that hurts a thumb lady what except this is cadillac williams to midfield to be about four yards short of a first down good job by josh mcdaniels for coming back and giving clemons a screen because you know that right hand is awfully sore at least give him one play without having to try to finesse the ball deep 53 is marked so another third down to keep a drive alive facing clemens in the rams short drop that pass is complete inside the 45 lance kendricks has a first step [Applause] that moves them to 2 out of 12 on third down and [Applause] [Music] and a flag and this will go against cincinnati [Applause] path interference defense number 53 spot of the foul automatic first down well the first time we call thomas howard's name all day long it's for an interference call well he's a a free agent pickup for the bengals giving him some physicality at the uh outside linebacker spot wow i couldn't see it there [Music] [Music] and the official indicating that ball was tipped as it got underway [Music] stops the clock for 3 48 and these rams are trying to make this a closer game and you can see it's hit right at the line of scrimmage jonathan fenneny gets it [Music] time pulls it down jackson once again jackson inside the 20. and just short of a first down i want to remind you time permitting after the game the nfl today update presented by verizon with jb dan shannon boomer and the coach will have the latest nfl scores highlights playoff picture all of that good stuff so stephen jackson is getting a lot of touches here this afternoon he's got 16 rushes seven receptions [Music] [Applause] at first glance i thought that almost looked intentional like he was trying to flip it to somebody and they say the rams recovered at the bottom of that stack well you could see adam goldberg comes up holding the ball [Music] i think geno atkins number 97 getting great pressure and you know he did he he reached around and poked it out he reached around with his left hand and poked the ball forward through the ground come on come on come on so this is fifth and seven and here comes the blitz everybody coming well there's no mercy in the national football league and mike zimmer said we are coming after you with everybody and kellen clements takes a heck of a shot reggie nelson number 20 is coming in there there are more bengals than there are blockers and but that is the way you come in you notice how he put his helmet to the side he hits the quarterback right in the midsection kudos to reggie nelson for coming in and attacking a quarterback within the rules so now the bengal with 233 on the clock in great shape to go eight and six one of the teams they're trying to fight off the tennessee titans losing today the voluntary area where there was no eligible receiver 10 yard penalty loss or down the ball goes over to cincinnati first down now then paul clemens on intentional grounding here well he's he's certainly in the pocket and i guess even with our lens pretty wide we don't see anywhere there's got to be a receiver somewhere in the vicinity if you're between the tackles well we've seen we've seen disparity like that between a receiver and a quarterback that just weren't on the same page [Applause] and the rams call a timeout stop the clock with 2 25 to play these bengals go home to play arizona on christmas eve and then they stay at home to play the ravens on new year's day and as you can see you don't need that graphic to tell you that baltimore is having a heck of a season and the bengals know that they have to win those remaining two games and get some help along the way now they're getting some help today if tennessee ends up losing but they they forfeited the right to control their own destiny when they lost to the texans last sunday first time in nfl history two rookie quarterbacks to throw up for 3 000 plus yards that's one of them right there we'll see it again this is bernard scott to the 40 and another timeout is called by the rams with 219 to play meanwhile this will be another dent in the loss column for steve spagnuolo and the st louis rams and there is no question he's on the hot seat here in st louis oh yeah no doubt of that and again this is a team that remember the last weekend of the season last year that they played a game with seattle for the division title and a chance to be in the playoffs and accordingly even though they lost that game they ended up winning seven games and expectations were raised the bar was raised and coming to christmas having won twice was not what anyone expected it nor is anyone i think in the mood to tolerate regardless of how many injuries therefore and jermaine gresham is that going to be his fourth of the day false start offense number 84 five yard penalty still third down jermaine gretchen has been collecting false starts today like there's like he's a stamp collector you know it has not been uh has not been good but i mean just consider the rams in this scenario here their starting quarterback is over on the sideline wearing a wall their backup quarterback aj feely has a broken thumb he's not even active he can uh the guy who had to play for them today has been here he actually had like three good practices it's a it's a damaged football team i don't think you can argue that defensive secondary has been a mass unit now having said all that they're going to be two and 12. and that's that doesn't cut it anywhere the rams used their third and final timeout to stop the clock with 215 to play [Music] starting the day they were at the very bottom of the nfc west and the 49ers already clinched that division seattle well seattle i think has got a lot of good young talent i i think pete carroll's got them on the move and they're currently beating the bears [Music] and uh of course the 49ers wow the job that jim harbaugh has done and alex smith with that group and you're right arizona is playing pretty good lately and that makes things worse here in st louis because keep in mind that's the team that used to call senior assault this is nick miller haircut all four in the 30-yard line on the clock and kellen clements all in all he'll get a passing grade for this day for the way he's performed well he has taken some real hits but uh and physically he's uh i guarantee you he's headed to the hot tub after this game 21-31 for 159 yards for clemens a lot of checkdowns you know a lot of dump offs especially late here you see the stephen jackson the touch hasn't been there on the long passes how could you possibly expect it [Music] and jackson straight ahead for a first down just across the 40-yard line and with that we get the two-minute warning two minutes to play here in st louis the rams looking for a miracle in the last minutes the bengals trying to hold on in the playoff picture we'll be back to the edward jones goal in just a moment there's a guy thinking about how albert pujols bolted down i think i think he's also thinking about how how high the rams are gonna draft with time over the middle he's got his man inside the 40-35 dadario alexander rams are out of timeouts clock continues to move coming up on 145. one thing clements can be proud of today is that they they have not turned the ball over he has not thrown an interception jackson 30 diving to the 25. that's the first down [Music] against steven jackson that's his ninth reception of the game kellen clemons probably doesn't know everybody's name but he certainly knows who 39 is clemens over the middle behind his intended receiver yeah lance kendrick's a tight end again it's like the farther down field you go the more difficult the timing between kellen clemens and his intended receiver nice hat [Music] 14 on the point might have been real you know 59. [Music] that is going to throw for the end zone going up and making the catch for the touchdown alexander and there's keller clinton's first touchdown pass in one time and mike zimmer mike shimmer must be beside himself because he's got classic double coverage pac-man jones has got the corner but he knows he's got safety help over the top and there they are and the safety coming across doesn't even play the football i i i'm not sure i'm struggling taylor mays i'm not sure what he was doing or what he was looking at alexander's second touchdown catch of the season the extra point is good well yeah get ready for an onside kick don't go away cincinnati 20 saint louis 13 still 68 seconds on the clock and all of a sudden marvin lewis is going well this is a little more than i bargained for [Music] yep we showed you earlier that kellen clemens hadn't thrown a touchdown pass since he was playing with the new york jets that was his second year in the national football league [Music] welcome to those of you just joining us here in saint louis where cincinnati has just had its lead cut into 25-yard touchdown pass kellen clemons to dinario alexander this is the pass then again the the bengals had the right defense called but look at the elevation by dinario alexander you can see that knee brace on his left leg he's got a chronically bad knee and the university of missouri product goes up and gets it and adam jones the corner in front of it couldn't get as high jones of course a lot shorter only at 5 10 but that was some leap by dinario alexander and now we're looking at an onside kick the rams are out of time out the bengals trying to hang in there in the afc playoff picture they're again behind the new york jets coming in and now the the bengals take a timeout it's their first taken here in the second half so they have two remaining and this isn't this isn't ending up at all like marv lewis had envisioned a couple of minutes ago they wanted to see how the rams deployed and of course you know the kickers today they work on they've got so many different types of onside kicks you know conventionally where you drive it down into the ground and you hope it takes that that big hop up into the air you've got the ones they've tried to kick it forward and kick it to themselves where they can recover it we've seen a couple horrible onside kicks the last couple of weeks i forget who else they are ugly when they don't go oh somebody kicked one and balboy went about four feet keep in mind it's got to go down gotta go ten before the rams can recover or touch it [Music] and it'll be cincinnati ball at the 32 and brandon tate well to pull it in the pooch can work but you can't you can't kick it that far if you know you can do the pooch if it comes down about 10 yards short of where it landed right there so you know you need it to come down into a mass of humanity when it bounces in the open like that that it's a little easier to field so now the rams with no way to stop the clock and andy dalton just needs a couple of snaps from center and the bengals will go 8-6 [Music] again they started this day in a tie with tennessee and oakland at 7-6 a game behind the 8-5 new york jets who are about to take on the philadelphia eagles well don't forget coming up the game everybody wants to see the new england patriots out in the mile high city going against the denver broncos tom brady tim tebow has tim tebow been getting enough ink here lately i mean this is uh hey this is must-see tv as far as after you and i speak from experience dan anybody who ever meets tim tebow can't help that but wish him the best and by the way the real star of the denver broncos in my mind their defense absolutely their defense and von miller sends station they're able to keep tim tebow within range by the end of the game meanwhile this one is over cincinnati will now hope for an eagles win against the new york jets to pull into a tie with the jets for that last playoff spot as time expires our final score cincinnati 20. saint louis 13 for dan dierdorff for all of us here in st louis greg dumble saying so long from the edward jones dome coming up next it's the nfl today update presented by verizon to new york for all the scores and highlights after this
