One of the ugliest Finals in WC history. Ref had absolutely no control of the game whatsoever.
This final has this goal, Iniesta’s celebration and Jarque tribute, De Jong’s assault on Xabi, and Casillas’ save against Robben. The save was probably the highest quality passage of play in the whole match, Sneijder’s turn and pass, Robben’s pace to get ahead of Pique and then Casillas facing him down, diving the wrong way but having the reactions to just flick a leg up and get enough of a touch.
That must’ve been rough for Robben. He had his country’s first World Cup on his boot and was inches from glory.
But I love Iniesta and if it couldn’t be a Liverpool connected player to win it (Torres, Xabi from his own half, Reina with a late run from deep) then I’m glad it was him. Just a joy to watch and he’s got one of his country’s greatest ever sporting moments to his name.
I was packed into a van with a bunch of other kids otw to a mission trip with our church. I was watching on my phone and absolutely lost my shit when he scored. I am not Spanish but Iniesta made me love the sport and it was such a great feeling to see a usually understated player having such an impact. One of my favorite goals ever.
Can't believe this was 10 years ago, wow. Time really flies. Iniesta won it but the memory that stays with me is the Casillas save. I do feel for the Dutch tho having admired them since their France '98 squad.
Man that team and those spanish midfielders in particular made me fall in love with football
I know that was a laser from iniesta, but it looked like the keeper maybe should have saved that? He got a hand on it. Must have been soul crushing
Absolutely terrible final. Ruined a great world cup.
