welcome to the NFL on CBS snowy skies in Pittsburgh Heinz Field the site for the San Diego Chargers and the Pittsburgh Steelers plus gusty winds out there showers snow showers expected to continue throughout the game and in fact it started to collect on the field here at Heinz Field and welcome again friends hello Jim Nantz Phil Simms alongside of this weather what's it going to bring to the game here today the wind and the snow well I'm sure the Chargers are not happy to see if you think about this game the Chargers have powered offense against Pittsburgh Steelers defense will it affect the footing will it affect the quarterbacks throwing the football down the field if it does it's a huge plus for the Pittsburgh Steelers the Pittsburgh Steelers and the San Diego Chargers both trucks all think about how crucial this game is a game brought to you in high definition here on CBS the Steelers won the coin toss and elected to defer so they'll be kicking it away to the Chargers Darren Sproles San Diego out west but first Pittsburgh in the North has a chance to take the lead outright over Baltimore the Ravens having fallen already to the Giants today Denver a winner at Atlanta so San Diego needs a victory here to stay a game back out west these teams have met 12 times in the regular season in the city of Pittsburgh and San Diego has never won a regular season game here in the Steel City they've won two playoff games in two attempts but never a regular season game Jeffery gets it start it's not at the kick comes only down to the 16 yard line and has run back by Jacob Hester to the 29 Philip Rivers out to direct the attack after back-to-back 300 yard performances first time in his career he's had four on the season 300 yard games against the defense that has not given up one all season there's Mike golf on that line and LaDainian Tomlinson averaging 70 yards rushing per game but the toe injury that certainly held him back the first half of the season LT declaran now that he's a hundred percent and he's the single back as they flood the left side to get the game started Omar Luna shifts to the right they're going to run it it's an early hit Mabel the jump ahead for just a yard that's it this is the number one defense in the National Football League Aaron Smith on that line at a sack last week has four on the season but the sacks really come out of the linebacking core Larry Foote though and then on mini tackles he's not the sack specialist that really belongs to Harrison and Woodley on the edges Mike Taylor is the only healthy corner they've got two of their top three corners out today with injury Townsend and McFadden so William game moves to the other side the other corner position away from Taylor on second down and nine is over the gates when he picks up about five and there is foot and barrier the two inside linebackers combining on the head here is your phil simms philosophy for this one today folks well when the San Diego Chargers have the football the defense of the Steelers and the wind which is died down in the field will that be enough to stop them for Pittsburgh's defense as Mike Tomlin says we do the same thing every week that's why what makes them so good or helps them they just repeat in practice in games the same now complain has come in for San Diego he's had three touchdowns over the last four weeks giving them a big boost third down and three open receivers chambers for the first Gaines about seven before line Clark bumps a none actually give him nine the San Diego offense so many weapons they've moved the formation and why do you move what he saw at that time William Gabe was looking like okay what are we going to do on this side how are we going to cover it in Anthony Madison so nobody covers Chris Chambers that's why you move people change formations to make the defense react till he can't attack me San Diego alpha come from behind victory last week against Kansas City I had to hold the breath till the very end rivers Athan Jackson drops it and cola Marley almost makes the interception that they play on the field as if he did I thought I'd hit the ground but Lamar was still on his feet he's able to sit creep in three hits and still going now he falls on his own slips at the 43 but we'll have to examine this there's a flag on the back end if he doesn't follow his business he would if there was not a single charger inside the last 40 yards of that I thought the football hit the ground so did i Hardwick on the back end of the return with a hit to the head of Polamalu and that's why there's a flag the Steelers last week three opportunities for interceptions they dropped them all [Applause] a ball that should have been caught by Vincent Jackson another formation the run fake big open space for Vincent Jax after the interception there are two fouls on the play illegal block in the back num number 57 personal foul unnecessary roughness number 51 the ball will be placed at the spot of the Steelers foul there ball first downs governing let's see if it's a pick unbeli what a cow I don't know still not sure he got his hand underneath there take another look I think he got it that is an amazing we've seen him this year and over the years just makes some incredible interceptions get his body in position you think there's no way he can still make the catch you just scoop it up just fingertips and it was ruled an interception on the field Norv Turner gonna challenge he has to Vincent Jackson had a big drop over in London as well what would have been a long touchdown throw in the second half of that game against the Saints he's had a big season but a big drop here may in fact lead to an interception and it's going to be reviewed challenged by the Chargers and another look this time zooming in on it a little bit that the nose of the football may contact with the ground first is inconclusive any way you look at it enough to overturn the call on the field not in my eyes but it is a judgement call after reviewing the play the Steelers player did get his hand underneath the ball I did not hit the birds wrong first down the Steelers defense comes up with the interception and it is just a tremendous play and to think look at Troy Polamalu how he curled his fingertips towards him to throw the ball up in the air where he can still make the catch you said it Jim Vincent Jackson wide open for the completion bobbles the football leads to a turnover San Diego loses a timeout remember there were ups with penalties each side on the return so the footballs back at the 41 of the Steelers Willie Parker who's back today picks up three on the first snap for the Steelers side Ben Roethlisberger he has struggled he's had his interception issues in his last couple of home games he's thrown seven picks in the last two home games losing to the Giants and to the Colts last week they ought to on that line time Ward 11 years still going strong nine catches last week its first hundred guard game of the season came against Indianapolis second down at 7:00 again Parker returns after sitting once with shoulder injury this plate was pass it's the war with jammer was the defender good 416 we'll check the flag good job behinds Ward's ailment like he's going to go for a long pass because Quintin jammer gave up a touchdown behind contact 23 for the defense that penalty is the crime now for a hundred and fifty six consecutive games Ward with a catch top of your screen last week a receiver got back Quinton jammer for touchdown that doesn't contact then grabbing when he's way down the field good throw by Ben Roethlisberger [Applause] and a good start for a quarterback with two too big interceptions last week and the third came on the last play of the game the hell Mary passes took the round and intercepted by Malcolm Cohen who ended the game today for the pole saved it with another interception here he has gone long at this burger to Hall's beautiful defensive play by jammer this time I said earlier Quintin jammer gained up a touchdown pass last week to the Kansas City Chiefs but overall he made a lot of big plays broke up some passes he was in position to stop big plays by the Kansas City Chiefs offensive passing game in Ron Rivera the new defensive coordinator he even singled him out when I had a chance to talk to him earlier this week that really proud the way Quintin jammer took responsibility but he made mistakes but came up big a long time so Ron Rivera now second week as the defensive coordinator set him down at 10 then sandwich and sat back at the 46 with another flag that was Cooper and Phillips the two of them in on Big Ben a week ago Roethlisberger was a question mark right up to game time with a shoulder injury that's been in there's no foul on the play third down no foul ball to play a nagging issue all season long forbids was particularly problematic one into the Colts game he went the distance Castillo on that line for the Chargers bunted the backers Giles Tucker who's in the position formerly man by Shawn Merriman out for the year Clinton Hart had the saving batted down pass in Kansas City went for the win on the two-point ride in the last week's game third down and 18 you know be more ready and he may be close enough with them to think about something here some options at the 33-yard line it's going to be fourth down fourth and about five and they're gonna bring the punter out they could have been looking at a 50 51 yard field goal they could have possibly been looking at going for it from here yeah you know Jim I thought from here for now they bring redoubt okay now they're bringing redoubt I still if it was up to me these conditions this field I would go for it on fourth down that's I think a 50/50 plus yard feel though these conditions very tough 51-yard she saw maintain strength makes their the streak ends we last miss November 26th of the season ago on a wet muddy field against Miami so Pittsburgh comes up empty off the turnover we're back in Pittsburgh Jim Nantz and Phil Simms on the scene that would have been the longest field goal ever at Heinz Field in NFL game had remade it would have eclipsed by one in the previous record of 15 here's Tomlinson with some rotten omen LT spinning and running hard to the pittsburgh side of the field of the 46 who got away from Polamalu for a moment gets 13 well you talked about the run game he's discussed a lot and he talked about the San Diego Chargers offense and North Korea has said we are one block away from getting it done and Troy Polamalu comes up free cannot get there quick enough [Applause] strong run by LaDainian Tomlinson gonna get another carry here medical I'm by Larry Foote no gain did you see that that time as he was coming in to make that cut this is what you worry about with this field as we stand up here and look look down it is it's slick and what snow Thomas as he tries to cut to his right whoa look at that once you slip right away you better get that information and saving yourself all right no cuts make the decision and go with it we've been here since 11 o'clock this morning and for the first time in over five hours it is not snowing no flurries at the moment rivers and a flag down ball tipped around and drop Tomlinson time to grab a hold of it he saw Harrison coming in for the head probably gonna be an offside call against Pittsburgh Aaron Smith may have gotten a little jumpy outside defense number 91 fight of yards penalty second down there in Smith defensive in top of your screen definitely cross into the neutral zone really interested to see how the Steelers defense and how they match up here's Mike Donnelly what would you do to cataracts all these weapons because nothing we he displayed in the Elte sliding off the a yard in Smith just flagged a moment ago makes the tackle on this one here's Tomlinson and his career of course it's all heading to campus one day the numbers this year had been down really the lowest numbers of his career have been established so far this year but he always comes on to make the second half per season his numbers are going to stay down probably gym one he did have injuries early in the year but this offense has so many weapons [Applause] we get too tight in we [Applause] he has his health back third down rivers gets his man for the first what a good job by Philip Rivers mono male uno with the catch 417 yeah you not guarantee you he's about the fourth option on every single pass play rivers been here twice when he sees the defender slip Phillip Rivers is going to look outside and now the corner of his eye he can see the defender slip watch the bees look it to his right oh there it is he sees him fall down then finds mama Molly who no over the middle good job by Philip Rivers Philip Rivers the number one rated quarterback in the AFC just a tenth of a point behind the wall corner there's Danites Tomlinson to the thirty-one Tomlinson's well fourth time he's played against Pittsburgh in his career you see his season numbers and we saw him a couple of times already this year including two games ago over in London and he certainly came up big as far as running in the numbers and all that in that one you see those numbers everybody still plays [Applause] big holes for antonio gates in the lodges here on second down and eight rivers is going to the end zone and he's almost well I've got a flag down his Jackson was blurted perhaps a little too snugly and he knows it well that's a tough call footballs well overthrown no chance for it to be completed [Applause] interference defense and the twenty five follows replace the spot we found first down Wow you know you make a point here was that a catchable ball well it's not even then it's Ike Taylor on the outside it just has no oh no well it's wrong Mike Taylor head position he's standing there the receiver ran into him if he didn't I would not have flown the flag gives him a first and goal they set number 25 line fart but is actually long Mike Taylor 24 here's Tomlinson leaving and finding the endzone for a touchdown his first rushing touchdown since the end of September of a road game in Oakland he ran behind Mike Tolbert his rookie fullback yeah good job good block by Tolbert upfront good snap count by Phillip Rivers does he quick deep it's not quite ready look at the good movement a nice block that was Clary to his Clara nearly Clary not a good block some fun lt's first touchdown in 93 rushes his fifth of the season tough penalty against the Pittsburgh Steelers defense you got to be able to come in first dating adds the extra point set upon interference fall they had good starting position off the missed field goal to Tomlinson takes it in for the touchdown 21 with Danny and Tomlinson numbers the final three yards and a lot of things for San Diego worked out well and then including an e penalty and again starting field position on the drive after the missed field goal good field position you're right go 59 yards to take the early lead in this one something they haven't done many times this season is take the lead at right off the top Russell still on a speed up about the 31 coming into this one the other team the opponent had scored first seven out of nine times Roethlisberger coming out down seven ins the drought first running it in for a store for the birthers offense and as far as the Pittsburgh defense goals have been a long time as well until that went by LT Steelers having lost the last two home games and downed seven in this one waters down above the 31 the right side and has a nice purse for about 10k Moya ought to help clear the way for Willie Parker boy look at this game today when Pittsburgh has the ball Ben Roethlisberger he has shoulder to blame said it was his fault last week you cannot make mistakes in key situations know the score and know the game seeing the Eagles defense pressure the other teams offense on first and second down and gently saw sacked by the Chargers the first physical sack they've had in four games on Pittsburgh's first possession he had a two week trip Buffalo to London and they never even touched a quarterback in last week as they Parker for a bomb too last week they had a sec where the quarterback ran out of bounds let's go to New York update JP this is what sandy a woman they wanted to get out of that running formation that put welcome Parker in the shotgun Jason was blitzing Roethlisberger's out of the way in time and space makes the catch close to the first down to know we watched him last week we're here for the pole Steelers game does Roethlisberger's arm look stronger this week right looks fine it looked good last week Jim he didn't throw the ball badly fitting last physically last week he threw the football well so I didn't think the strain shoulder was a problem they're down in one spade a little shaken up to an injury timeout here in Pittsburgh need a log on to CBS Sports 9 nominally to scores stats breaking news were Emily the live game sinners third and a foot to go here for the Steelers state walked off the field the few has replaced him it's Parker he's got the first back again for 40 yards people are finally tripping him up weathers Pittsburgh Steelers offensive line has just not been the same this year not run blocking as well as they have in the past and it's kind of changed what they are they've had to rely more on the past putting their further back antipathy a little bit and that's one of the reasons why they've made more mistakes they played to the line with three receivers [Applause] it's about machine Seibert marker a big gap then he sees [Applause] he also able to spring them for 13 watch the back side look at this lane here one one defender is coming down the line way too fast and then Jamal Williams move and he's in good good shape but look at that running Lane over like Parker first down in the 33 [Applause] picked up 29 yards on the ground on this dry is the snow now returns well people will you know is he 100% so far looks like antonio hogs fixing with a down inside the 20 we'll check the flag that was a run play where Ben Roethlisberger had the option to throw the back side slam illegal formation offense six men on the line scrimmage let alone the right tackle Shanee was too far off the line of scrimmage the helmet of the tackles second big penalty of this quarter on his burden the helmet of the tackles here's Willie Cologne it must at least dissect the waist of the sinner and they say they're saying it did not that's close call let's see it all the time wipes out a 16 yard gain Jim obscene as you see it a lot it's not called they usually wore them like get up on the line of scrimmage cut them a little too Chris Matt Spade hands come back in remember they're already on without Keith Miller who is inactive with an ankle injury this bait is not to the left did they beat the down clock now Chris Berg his pass picked up by Hines Ward he has the first [Applause] - 10 down to the 7th an extra half second or a second to get that snap off and it goes for 30 well that does happen you're allowed that but it's the Blitz by the Chargers oh my gosh is that threading the needle Ben Roethlisberger to Hines Ward the Blitzer is coming free the coverage is there look at that two defenders one inside one outside but Ben balance mother knew that saw it he threw it low protect the receiver and protect the football not make eternal first and goal to go hunter stay picking up their time to lead the way and Hartford Dex one camerman on the way out and Quentin jammer forces him out one thing I'm seeing early in this game already this charges defense I saw it last week they are so much closer to making plays they've sacked Ben Roethlisberger already they've blissed him a couple times they're getting three runs at him but the Steelers just execute and a very high level to avoid more negative place [Applause] second ago the empty backfield Roethlisberger he is sacked for the second time in the quarter Giles Tucker the first to get to him down low to Williams and this San Diego defense it was not able to apply any pressure on quarterbacks of a month now does it again well I just wanted to see if you could say the word sack in San Diego maybe they've been talking about it a lot but look at the coverage that's where it starts impressive man-to-man nobody is open there is nowhere for been law it's Burger Detroit what you shouldn't do in situations like that he used to running to make in place but calls the blitz was there the defense was spaced out nowhere boy the one two been calls timeout third and goal coming up after the Pittsburgh time our pressure about the San Diego deep it something they have not had in many many games last week this one sack my running the quarterback out but look at it today blitzing Ben Roethlisberger good pressure by the front floor and probably most importantly I said of me with the promotional spacing in other words everybody has a care and don't leave when you leave it that creates big lanes for and for quarterback to move in and so far his game except once they've been Burda Gulf of [Applause] could cost to get there Washington they say short Roethlisberger's pass complete to Washington you got to defend she won the other sandy another blitz are coming free Roethlisberger nice gesture a little bit quickly like a good job of knowing where you read and what to do once you catch the football my name Washington they're gonna go for it inside the one [Applause] gary davis the full baggage in the wealthy more is the tailback yet two rushing touchdowns from the yard out last week they're gonna go with him again - oh the Morris stacked up the Turkish defense was fine [Applause] we need some confidence as a football team in especially on the defensive side stuff like this when one foot out to the Williams gets penetration it's Steven people's he's on the outside perfect enter Brandon sylars in here sweating a jammer to Timur yes again look at the defender Stephen Cooper Steelers run four plays from inside the 10 that's interesting they took Parker out put more in and he never had a chance they came busting through the line Avila said make sure you don't worry Williams at the outside the defense is great he got a yard out of it remember last week Moore had the two short touchdowns but he also got stuff down there one other time by Eric Foster the Colts on a crucial play into the quarter seventh nothing San Diego mergers and Steelers the second quarter about to begin here at Heinz Field Jim Nantz Nicholson's Lance Barrow Mike Arnold in the truck and a walk is seen as always according encourage this defense to step up now after the offense failed to deliver a goal to go situation Rivers goes it away don't rivers shaking his head no no no you weren't because Antonio Gates is going I was hoping over the middle and Phillip Rivers big job when you're backed up like this in a situation you're leading 7 to nothing you don't take a chance and if it wasn't wide open he was not going to throw the football over the middle so he did the smart thing thrown away third down and eight Steelers abroad and Fernando extra defensive back to sign this week the 31 to them James Harrison come in and he's got rubbers balls out [Applause] with the recovery lagoas James Harrison got two rivers charred the ball loose McNeil saved points though for San Diego as he was able to recover it and end up surrendering only two yeah it's plenty of time the initial protection very good on the San Diego Chargers and you can see Phillip Rivers took like four hit steps waiting for somebody to come open again when you backed up said look throw it away and James Harrison never stops on Jeremy Clary on the outside whose per damn pass protection it was good he initially got him there is tank sorry Brandon London Molly you know who was blocking him James Harrison's just having a monster year Mike Tomlin cheering on his defenses Harrison registers his twelfth sack of the year and this one leads to the two-point safety and you talked about James Harrison he is in line back for this he would fit into any scheme that you'd run in the NFL pitch a 4-3 you want a pass rushing linebacker a coverage line for a linebacker or somebody to stop the run he can do it all that's why he's so valuable you said it last week Jim he's going to be in consideration for Defensive Player of the Year he is teaming up with Lamar Woodley who's back after missing last week's game with a calf injury those two are combining now when the SAC Department gonna be the Dauntless duo receive the Pittsburgh franchise has probably ever had when it comes to racking up sacks not seeing some of the linebackers Kevin green and Rick Lloyd had a big copper here the kick is fielded by four [Applause] the 18 but Hungary waters Anthony waters Helio block there are 94 receiving team half the distance to the goal you could see that that blocked in the back hey gobo sacks by linebackers in the lead this year and the former Steeler Porter Ben Harrison DeMarcus Ware and Woodley so the Steelers two of the stray up there you see their numbers now 21 and a half the all-time Steeler duo numbers are 24 sexes Jason Gildan and Joey Porter back in 2000 combined 424 we're well on their way there's Woodley so they certainly would have been dissipated with the free kick all the way back at the 20 having much better starting point than this how's that for position 76 yards [Applause] knowing a good first card in the secondary finally brings it down at another charger taken up to you Cooper go like man last week here's the big hit by Foster and that today excite his jammer its Cooper you know you added up the last three snaps they've had from the opponents one they have been stuff going back to last week where's home base [Applause] sneaky Cooper look closely at his right hand random silent it's his position on the field shower already with a big stick one of those and hit before before the Gulf of the foot second down for took the nd they are here respect his outburst that spade actually took on two defenders [Applause] now you look at NFL offenses if you're not everybody has the quick screen game two wide receivers two running backs tight ends whoever it is on the outside you're like Jim Spade two blocks he gets to help Hines Ward what's 89 play tomorrow yep turn then jammer and it's it's pretty good that's pretty good there now he's shaping up already in this game and set out for a couple of players Mike Tomlin says he he's mom Robin he took over from Batman you got to step up a pig Batman [Applause] stuffed at the line but your father it was actually given a yard let's get the update JP what do you have hey Jim Tennessee trying to remain perfect with their mark ticket on Jacksonville Maurice jones-drew caffeine and 11 plays 74 yard drive in his Jacksonville on top of Tennessee into second 73 back to Jim Nantz bill Simms the Jaguars after look at this is a game to save the season stay in the wild-card chase Indianapolis and the divisions already wanted a to go to six and four second down [Applause] [Music] [Applause] a jammer and casein inside the NFL it's every Wednesday on Showtime that was there when JB Warren Sapp Cris Collinsworth they're dancing right through all the highlights the insights and the best analysis is Wednesday's only on Showtime Cooper sits out to plays is back [Applause] seize their bigoted and this short notice two for Pittsburgh [Applause] [Music] [Applause] it's the first bag both of them but actually picks up four and the first and another update which ain't burned and jbs that was right here tie another tie today gets to the outside and the escape of first child tucker picks up two hammer shoves amount but we got a holding signal already holding offense number 86 10-yard penalty first down five penalties now on the steelers just three and a half minutes into the second quarter sixty minutes tonight everybody wants to hear what the president-elect has to say there's only one place to hear it on 60 minutes Barack Obama's first interview tonight on CBS you know Jim sometimes when you see penalties like the Steelers at that time they get a holding penalty it's because they're caught off guard by the defense the defense being very aggressive and so far it's early but the San Diego defense we saw him a few weeks ago in London like a different team first in eighteen point of the inspection setting up screen if you moved by Parker picked up an extra three yards out of anything that's dro were able to tackle em that's what you need to stop the screenplay you need defensive linemen to chase it down from behind they know when they're going into the quarterback right away they can sense hey I got there to easily turn run find the football whoo it's wrong - and make the tackle from behind Luis Castillo and his whole high school coaching staff over in New Jersey in town for the game Garfield High School staff eight or nine guys with inelastic dip this Pittsburgh famous sons we've Roethlisberger over the ward and that's a short gainer on second and Rollins burgers back EMF lead award with the good stick gave him the short game you know you go back we've talked about Ben Roethlisberger and how he shouldered the blame for what he did last week and even said it I saw an interview he goes look we lost this game compulsive maintenance the mistakes I made and you know all quarterbacks have been to throw interceptions but includes well right before half four they were leading 17 to 7 when in that situation that's the last thing you can do and then he threw one late in the game Jim he took a chance you can't take chances when your team is leading and you got controlled again third down and ten they come after him and they swing them down for the third sack that is Jaxy Zahra about then wow this is a San Diego defense it had that two game road trip traveling all the way to Buffalo and then to whimsy Stadium well look what happens in there's a good example of why they got the sack then they're confusing the blocking look they're running games inside that puts linemen it makes them second-guess what they're going to do and just a little hesitation allows a defender to get by an offensive lineman and make the sack good job burns for the pie he didn't catch that one they're attached 45 yard line lettle now we've had on and off snow showers here hey the retailers need us to start thinking about the holiday seasons not that far away and let it snow 7 to San Diego [Music] Pittsburgh's offense has been on the field for 11 minutes and 34 seconds of the last 12 minutes and did not produce any points 22 plays that came up with a safety the offense stopped on the goaline situation and Tomlinson picks up a ticket to the arms of Timmons well Jim let's go back CBS players maybe watch Philip Rivers drop him back to throw the football it took him three point two seconds before he's hit by James Harrison it causes the safety usually a quarterback when he gets added protection you're hoping for somewhere between three and 3.5 seconds to throw up so James Harrison just made a a series of claims to get that safety and second it true captain what's right Perry said school buses woodenly how about that picks up seven it's picking up chunks now yeah and it's just straight ahead no no it's breaking no jumps how do you see you got a visor you're nothing inside but just look look at that we talked about the field and LaDainian Tomlinson having respect for it is just taking it and powering up in there and right now that San Diego offense plan creating holes and moving the Steeler front come over give you a helping hand Phil sees enough to carry it up the middle for three more yes we know inside eight and a half minutes first half well that's a good three yards so much three about your football team when you run the football well you're you're telling your you're physically dominant and of course it keeps your defense off the field it makes your team tougher and it makes play call and of course now it brings in other situations defenders got a dig in to stop the run what's that going to do it's going to make them a lot less efficient when they try to rush the the 37 Pittsburgh second down at 7:00 Polamalu pulls them down yeah there's nothing there and when you play this dealer defense if it's not there right off the start don't take it outside good job by Troy Polamalu does not get caught looking inside stays discipline keeps the angle for the force the runner comes to him and he makes the tackle Darren Sproles comes into the backfield that lost five to this out set wide to the left and movement by Clarion the right side will make it for a third and 17 false start offense number 66 five-yard kind of backing out the throw human it's the first penalty against the Chargers today how would you like to be the right tackle you got three defenders sitting out there Luke James Harrison flinched and it made Clary move Phillip Rivers talked to us this week bill about how the win last week a lot of people portrayed it as an ugly win he said we got we got better laughs with he was very optimistic about where they were going he paces 1317 the bring blitz pass batted down that's Woodley with a hand on it denying Vincent Jackson about him one of leading sackers in the NFL able to drop back and still defend a pass it's a blitz good initial protection by the same the Eagle offensive line Philip Rivers took a shot to the knee and there's 56 good job by Woodley keeping his hand on Vincent Jackson so Nolan if he made a quick move if they were separation he would we start going with him Clank ciphers and for his first punch it's a good honest flashing the result a hopeful tentative inside intent the well me more with the fair catch Roethlisberger 10 of 11 but down 7 to and coming up we've got the sprint halftime before I send you back to New York JB will take it to the scores of highlights after some analysis damn Shannon women poke power on the sprint halftime report [Applause] from the nine contrived information they hit the scene with on the queue except 15 missed his second catch of the season yeah good job good formation he shifted over there Shawn McCune infinita first a dead the defense he just sneaks right in between the defendant of the 20 but Hines Ward to your outside good job by Ben Norfolk when he backed out that time which I think quarterbacks should do more on this previously and able to get rid of it a little quicker because of that ten straight completions for Roethlisberger [Applause] away from the pressure in it but there's a flag they're looking for Ward might be an illegal contact down the field on the Chargers there's no file for illegal contact the quarterback goes out of the pocket second since the second time they pick up a flag today that's right when two quarterback breaks the tackle pocket watch Antonio Cromartie on top of the screen it's a little double move he's able to do that because when he's grabbing Santonio Holmes there goes Ben Roethlisberger out of the pocket so that's why it was not a penalty [Applause] Bon Scott draining the crew something bad at 10:00 [Applause] war and for the first move in Spanish I by Dominic Cooper face another short yardage situation third and one early how rough was play compared to the down for that loss last week and said I don't usually use the word I but I cost us the game I lost the game and it hurts proud about those pics yeah you know what you do that that's the right thing to do Jim you do it for your you do it for your team and your coaches and let them know okay I know what I did wrong and I'm going to correct it and we talked to Mike Tomlin he said hey he was spirited this week in practice he practiced very well he was sharp and he expected him to play well with Manny the winner last we have his brother Hey sunbather my brother's can take Pennsylvania make it a blue state with the Colts and the Giants and they back did that with the Colts winning here in the Giants winning Eagles that's it all he was a blue state anyway but a few days before that but they picked up wins on the road and the Steelers are trying to avoid three straight home losses you've got to go back over 25 years since that last happened where they go third and short and it's partly now the tailback wrapped up this interesting spot I don't think they got him no it doesn't look like the initial spot but it I was looking for the rudder never could find him and again that San Diego defensive lines Tim Dobbins was the first defender to get to him Jim Dobbins and Stephen Cooper Ron Rivera the defensive coordinator who singled him out and said they they are emotional all that's just a terrific job Louise had Tim Dobbins you said it took on the blocker and just really ruins the play attacks the line of scrimmage oh yeah oh well no force and I don't think he made it he is said earlier where is Jerome Bettis I think we know he's in New York right now is he getting regular a little studio work tonight but you know this is Steeler this is this this is the personality that's franchises Baylor get that tough yard well that explains a lot doesn't we've already talked about the running game just hasn't produced what we're used to seeing Pittsburgh Steeler football Duke and and it is amazing this one we saw what earlier the game last week and if you follow the Steelers you watch the games they have struggled with situational running all year long of course the situation like this you're backed up inside your own 35 the fans boo a little but I think the booing in fact didn't make it you got to punt the football brinster will punt it away to darren sproles who was one of only three players ranked in the top ten in both punt returning average and kick return average leon washington of the Jets Chris Carr of the Titan sea of the two so very dangerous his Sproles hurt searches on rooftops key in a fair catch no I thought I saw a hammer dick yeah they did now the flag comes out I thought I saw it Anthony Smith sticks him after rolls started to take off [Applause] it's a 42-yard punt by hurt sir their catch interference number 27 15 yard penalty first down this one again spits right now there's the signal [Music] we're back snow squall Hoover Heinz Field first and ten for 40 half seven two characters lead I know the Chargers have quite you plays drawn up to get the football down the field we haven't seen them so far today Oh Jackson for about eight mike tomlin was arguing there in the brain about that penalty against his Anthony Smith lotta thinks once Indians balls raise his hand above his head it was quick it was one tough to see Anthony Smith didn't see it I know Jenny were thinking that maybe Darren Sproles made a little move like he's going to run he did but it was so quick hard to judge that but Anthony Smith I don't think he ever saw the fair catch signal he was entangled [Music] block no I don't second down and two Tomlinson dropped for a loss for the second time that's Woodley Aaron Smith kind of forced it it is amazing when you start going sideways against his Steeler defense the defensive lineman can all run of course we know four linebackers can and if you're going to be on that defensive side anywhere the corners he'll come in here get the action to just over one you get able to get to the side faster [Music] these last two carries yards third and five and they get to rivers he sold Aaron Smith also this is the number-one sack team in the NFL and they've done it here again 109 you know Jim and they're getting the sacks this year so much of it has to do with the fact that he just cover receivers met her down the field so when you cut the better Gordon bangs him the holded Philip Rivers he wants to unload it he thinks he's going to have an open receiver but no that allows the defender to get there and get the sack Mike ciphers number one in the league and net average in teams to net about 42 yards per punt that's another good one or catch Paul bison [Music] Piper's doing quite a job there with that thanks he's he's one of the big reasons why he look they are today [Applause] flushing them I was 50 yards by cyphers so that the Steelers can do three minutes to go in the half [Applause] there's an unstack more about Steelers play in home games ending to have whether it's the first half or second half they've been outscored in foam in the last two minutes first half and saying that fifty one two three this year in home games it's astonishing if they don't move it here they're gonna give San Diego a chance to add to that total second down to ten for the Spanish his tip five C's errors having a big day already with a second now a tip yeah it's tip do you not say what was really impressive they don't they do not get to Ben Roethlisberger but nobody leaves their passing lane they got him surrounded and that's why the football is tip there's a receiver down the field wide open I think they're think Washington was when you block don't just go sideways he create this throwing Lane go back to San Diego the field this year that could force the three and out here third down and ten again a-shaking standard rock to split that steps up which it away in time and what'll prevents the first down well ol ops in on more index them about a yard or two short and I choose having trouble after they'd been staff to Ben Roethlisberger if you didn't man a nice catch I think when we talk to north turner proudly he said hey last week we had a a series and the sequences where we had a five play 3 plate three play at a Ford play defensive sequence of a market dolphin feel better two-minute warning you are watching the NFL on CBS Jim Nantz Phil Simms back here in Pittsburgh we're in the bottom of the second has 72 San Diego this should be played of over at neighboring PNC Park is what it feels like does it feel like that does but instead you got the roar over here at high speed on those wrecks there almost took his fingers and the diving fair catched me my Eric Weddle we do have a flag it was a 30 yard punt that's all it traveled ripped off ski was the long snapper he's just been with the Steelers for a couple of weeks Rick Warren had to sit down for the year out with the knee i art ineligible downfield kicking team number 57 the penalty five yards will be added to the end of the play first down San Diego the five-yard penalty will put San Diego now on the pittsburgh side yeah you know you know Jim just looking at this game they Ben Roethlisberger good numbers being very careful with the football a lot of short passes a couple runs after those catches but overall you just got off lon to San Diego defense then it should look at Roethlisberger's numbers he's 13 of 16 her own 35 yards and there's been some sacks in between there which really take away some of the luster off those number 39:16 the offense would have put up some numbers or some points just a two-point safety so far as rivers pass by the attempt no boy tried to sweep it off the ground good boy and if you're gonna come in here and win a football game your defense has to step up and help you beat the Steelers well I'll tell you what that's ken-chan he had that football securely and his leg is in bounds as he goes down remember the word review has to come from up top inside two minutes when I saw it live I thought he caught it nothing North Korea can do except complain about now they stopped it but you got a complaint Ali you did near the previous plane this is going to be it'll certainly it's one that puts him inside the 40 if it goes as a catch what do you think Jim I think it's a catch thank you boy coming from you it must be together you're taking credit for those no no you see everything happen oh yeah how's variety at full resident that's you know the guys back in the studio right now or rolling their eyes or that one but what do they know they're geniuses after the fact this big played for the San Diego team completion me is down or should say he secures the football on the sidelines his Dean hits first well you know that we love the other angle let me just offer this though it's one thing look for yeah it's not this one you want a couple ago when does he gain possession is the name okay is the knee touching the out of bounds line once he really secures it is right here watch tell me when he has the catch tell me when it's a catch now no I said that okay okay well give you one more try do it again now that's a catch right there then it's then it's gonna go now the folks at home know the truth I think it is gym it is closed and again always remember when you watch replays it is the decision of the referee to determine to make that judgment call you know with the division rival that were already winning the road game today and Atlanta the heat is on San Diego to match that road victory state just to gain back event out west after reviewing the play the receivers knee was down in bounds with possession in law every San Diego's ball first and ten on Floyd makes the catch for 14 yards yeah just a good throw about Phillip Rivers waited for as long as he could and Malcolm Floyd we've talked so much about all the skilled guys in his San Diego offense he's the one that's really put it over the top he's had a tremendous training camp this year they've always believed great potential and you put him out there with Vincent Jackson Vincent Jackson and Chris Chambers before the state's second chance Polamalu forces him out at the 31 rivers hands goes for four yards and we'll be going to New York at half time Sprint has JB and Dan the Janet and Boomer coach kapow ER waiting room arrival studio 43 but they don't Jacksonville in Tennessee with the Jaguars up seconds to go in the first half 14 to 3 Tennessee's defeated season in jeopardy second down and six Tomlinson walked out ahead he got the block he was looking for the cover angles 1 out of 17 Jackson also she gets credit for the 14 yard play nice job look at the formation they got the reverse wishbone they get two defenders offensive guys going and LaDainian Tomlinson waits for Mike Dobbs of a head blocked and what a block down the field now the big guard pulling around now this discharges offense they just come at you with pretty basic plays but they stinker not deception things where it does keep you off guard in the made you run it it's usually for good yards Thompson's first catch he's out scrolls his in rivers intercepted right at the 10-yard James Harrison Harrison makin another huge play already with a safety and now with a pity sheriff Phillip Rivers was tarnished Nick ball he down the field to the receiver behind Harrison either comes out of his hand funny maybe the cold weather let's see where you think the football is going is he going to Antonio Gates short R&C throwing it deep to the endzone in the corner I think that was mono male una he was looking for oh it's okay and so I thought it was in Tonio gates I think he's thrown at the Vincent Jackson behind him and it just comes out of his hand funny yeah I mean if they was born for Jackson it was it was a good ten yards short River sick in his head languishing over that one he had came out saw it did not have a tight power on it that's what makes me believe that he was so off target that he was trying to throw it sharp it into the killer now the Steelers a chance to do a little business before half-time they hit water at the 49 that rivers interception was only the second career red zone interception he's flown the other one came just three games ago so two in the last four games a rare mistake inside the 24 rivers just the opposite for the Steelers this week that's more catches it as in slope states too already third down or the crowd so impatient just uneasy about everything the offense is doing today [Applause] good time good hit award at the 42 and now they call the second time out first down coming out of the timeout of the San Diego 42 and the steelers and jeans to fill the big reversal here just what it looked like San Diego is going in to score before the half and the Steelers can come back and produce something of their own 36 seconds one timeout to play with a field goal attempt is he that's what you're aiming for first anything after that great fuss fake close it into the arm try to make the cut lost about sadly 1314 yard game good job all you don't cover up the tackle like sit at 18 seconds what a job by Ben Roethlisberger buy in time and wait he what's the let it go holds on to it and with the fact the him onto it a little extra it allowed Santonio Holmes to open up past the defenders across the field well what a job by Roethlisberger that's the way you just have to get it over all those outstretched arms you don't know that [Applause] and sometimes they get unfortunate they nip it tip the football you can't see all those hands second f10 ago keeping him in play hasten his homes with the caption and they call the timeout with ten seconds yeah with ten seconds now you cannot throw the football in the field of play you gotta throw it to the sidelines or in the endzone this all set up takeaway by James Harrison yeah watch Philip Rivers as he throws his football he's gonna step on it he's gonna try to really put some mustard on it that's why I thought he was trying to throw it to the corner of the end zone and he went to do it and it just didn't it just didn't come out the way he wanted it to sometimes he tried to throw it hard it comes up short I'm positive he was talked to the corners in Tomah James Harrison about that we do a tremendous job on the run blitzing the quarterback making the safety and now stopping the school an opportunity interception remember he cannot afford to be sacked him no timeouts left but for the next row second on the fly throws it the three homes to keep him in play No who he had to fight for it or three seconds San Diego to almost prevented him from getting out about Mason and Oliver Cromartie actually down there to tell you what this is some throw by Ben Wallace when that's stepping into it letting it go but saying well you know what he did not have a chance to get out of bounds to him he was trying to secure the catch I can you got to know the situation at the time nice back shoulder throw by Ben Roethlisberger so Marty can keep hold of him though and keep shoving him back they would have never had this attempt maybe a 21-yard field goal attempt by Jeffery boy good job but the Steelers offense they'll give him some confidence going in the locker room past Roy gorillas last week for second post field goals all-time made by the close out the half at 75 San Diego right-hander coming up you're watching the NFL on CBS [Applause] seven to five San Diego Jim Nantz and Phil Simms from getting set for the second half and we've had a safety and a field goal for the Steelers of Tomlinson touchdown and a huge goal line stand the numbers though you find very interesting here as well I think the numbers really tell the story of the football games in when you look at it the Steelers even Ben Roethlisberger great numbers but he's been sacked three times for 21 yards the penalties by the Steelers to seven for 65 yards and then the average drive start the Steelers have been backed up that's why they only had five points I found a little quarterback comparison Phil well good job by Ben Roethlisberger after last week he's taking care of the football being very efficient and not throwing any interceptions at Philip Rivers two interceptions one of them his fault was a big one after a missed field goal for 51 yards these burgers drove 59 yards we think with Tomlinson touchdown run from three yards out Harrison got the strip sack and led to the safety and read with just no time left time expired at the first half to make it 75 and a reminder this game is brought to you in high definition here on CBS what are you looking for in the second half Phil well you know I think a couple things Jim I thought the field held up very well in the first half allowed the skill players to really make some plays and can the San Diego Chargers defense can they sustain I think that's the big question because the Steelers got some confidence moved the football protected Ben Roethlisberger better there at the end of the first half the Chargers find a way to get it back in Pittsburgh had won the opening coin toss and elected the power here to the third quarters getting the football in this instance with Russell running it from the six swung down with aggression by Trey battle just brought up from the practice squad this week here it is fourth and goal from about a foot away Brandon - Sylar in on the hip Harrison as the Chargers were driving late in the first half comes up with the pick it sets up the field goal by Reed it's pretty good returned by Harrison when he jumped them through the tackle we knew he was a strong guy we just didn't know that he could run like that - later in the game we'll tell everybody how strong he is but maybe he's got some food bank illness in his future 2:23 threatening the in Duran effect kinda busted up the little of pressure for about six you know people always say why does everybody run that fake reversed that time you could see the same legal defense stopped in wait to make sure it was not a reverse and it allows the offensive line to get that extra push and you pick up six yards there's Ron Rivera before last week and the win against Kansas City last time and he had been a defensive coordinator before that game against the Chiefs was back in Super Bowl 41 he was the offensive coordinator for the Bears NFC championship team that fell to the Colts down in Miami to Spain has the first down and that Speights out to the 48 yard line he has done a fantastic job the last two weeks there is a flag filling it for Heath Miller it's going to be a personal foul or a hold I couldn't see it happened late on the sidelines some odd developing play was it a busted play fill in Roethlisberger turned to wrong way on the play-action fake but it didn't matter Speights was still wide open fooled everybody he legal walking back number 86 10-yard and Ward first correction they are racking up the penalties and penalty arts yeah they really are and they just sit just you forget yep in rounders burger deputy turned the wrong way Hines Ward left you screen [Applause] there it is the clip in the back good call you consider you there it was no question no question about it [Applause] instead of being out of 48 yard line it'll send them back to the 30 and again they step it off at that point of the infraction so it's a second down and three they're told [Applause] I understand ninis call the games last two weeks the frustration the band sometimes they just keep making a mistake especially a place like that he stumbles to Schuyler first we played for a moment there this could be a big gainer Eric Weddle its credit for that tackle third and a yard to go again this has been problematic for Pittsburgh and look what they do they bring in Gary Russell now they tried on fourth and goal needing a guard they tried for later on 31 they tried blood group and that Audrina Terry Davis is the full-back and therefore team running back there is Gary Russell [Applause] he didn't get the tough yard oh he does [Applause] but I like what they did that time Jim I love this on tough situations where you know they're gonna run it watch the full-back he goes to the lab and then Russell goes to the right catches the defense just a little bit off guard and that's all you're looking for is just a little they even pull when he shoots to backside gap good run by Gary Russell he secured it with both mark and I get a big slap on the helmet for my table he might have found himself a short yardage man certainly an attorney you have to think a second or a third go at it he found a short yardage call maybe that's more important [Applause] first now this book now licking the lab and it's home was it in twist move to come around and make the catch pretty nifty but didn't have both feet in good cause I don't think he had it but a blitz by the Chargers staying in their lanes really doing a good job making sure Ben Roethlisberger stays in that pocket then was his left foot in no it's out Roethlisberger light at 200 yards passing 80% of the day 2025 [Music] the second intent and the condition of the meat then that is state [Applause] well they love this formation the Pittsburgh Steelers they do it better than anybody in football top of your screen and they do so many different things out of the butt watch the tight in he goes between the two receivers as they open up the defense by distracting it that's wise faith was wide open space was a teammate at the University of Minnesota with Gary Russell who came in picked up the first down on third and a foot those two Golden Gophers contributing to this time to open up the third quarter for the Steelers there's now thrown down the field they go tipped away by jammer and looking for home another blitz by the defense Windjammer knows right away when there's a blitz you're not going to have a lot of help and this time he doesn't get caught looking at the quarterback pull a nice job runs keeps his arms down just like a receiver until he tries to make the play good job by seeing him Santonio Holmes to make sure it's not intercepted [Applause] [Applause] [Music] seven and ten and again barely beating the play clock Roethlisberger able to get the time to find homes for a first rothenburger zones for alignment we know yeah the initial look by Ben Roethlisberger there's nobody open but the pass protection allows him or you want him run nowhere to run so he finally finds homes to the right side what's been wrong as we just go through it and he panics he wants to run with it he knows he can't get out of the pocket and then a good job picking your eyes up and finding the open receiver like like like like [Applause] as a hold of them we've got an update trying to come back on the Jags what's the story Jamie that they are Jim they were trailing by 11 at the half and take a look here is Kerry Collins caps e7 play 55 yard drive with a 13 yard strike to Brandon Jones and it is now 14 to 10 flag nervous for celebration score stands 1410 back to Jim and Phil here at 75 thank you James the words trying to take the lead for the first time today the best start to the second half at Purfleet outside the truck now that goes inside weaves his way and it gotten away from Oliver it would have been just one man to beat Cromartie give him ten yards yeah good running penetration by the Chargers Kim came on to does a good job getting the block that Springs Willie Parker watch the big guy oh just makes Eric Weddle go down to get out of the way that's what you got to do love it the play of this Drive coming up while the war in the backfield he's the safety valve he's out at the 23 Oliver in on two straight plays the initial coverage to the right for Ben Roethlisberger it is not there what he wants that they're trying to go down the field and score Santonio Holmes he wasn't brilliant there here's where he wants he wants to go there but there's a safety coming in to stop it if he did throw it that way so immediately checks off to the outlet receiver something's done Roethlisberger very sharp in his decision-making so far today and church's offense only able to watch them out here for a while in the locker room no activity it's all Roethlisberger and the Steelers on this in the second half Washington unable to hold on to that third down coming up and we talked about this Chargers defense Jacque sees air he has done a good job been on the quarterback three times today Roethlisberger could that's how you want to do it move up in the pocket get away from pressure he kept his eyes up and that's why he found an open you see look at the plate differential san diego's last of the league in that span they've seen their other team now 123 more plays than them on the season back arena today more than five and Roethlisberger's well it's just out of reach for home it'll bring out Reed for a field goal that would give the believe or the idea was tremendous maybe if Roethlisberger could have if he could have waited just a little longer they show so many different routes out of that three receiver to one side look that you don't know what to do as a defender and he knows it head to coverage he wanted to throw it down the field doesn't make the connection watch the long snap here by Jared let pops dude this is the most chewed up part of the whole field right where he's kicking a 41-yard field goal attempt to give them away is inside there yes it's good Baylor's have the lead for the first time today register puts it down three drives it through 8/7 pittsburgh 14 plays producing a field goal for Pittsburgh and a lead of 8 to 7 berry omelets those gates they're all ready to get out there get warm get active converters have been scoreless the last 28 minutes of game action the other foods oh dear Terrible Towels the course [Music] rivers up first now Harrison blindside and it's incomplete intended for Jackson [Applause] to job a feeling to pass rush from the backside James Harrison to the right of your screen against Marcus McNeil got to be careful when you throw away pounds bums out the left side second down I would say nothing he'll through a yard peas along ahead there was a time in his defense was a little flat [Applause] as playing with the motion and of course as a coaching staff you can always spit out by the cause that you send in beep it's fast to the 41 for the first they go straight with ease again it's got out ahead partly also with a key block and the Chargers quiet things after 26 yards yeah that quiets them down that's of course it's good execution but Jen the defense just over commits and there is nobody to block mic golf can t me get to the defenders are so far away that is a tremendous call by Norv Turner and you know sometimes as a coach you take the decision making and the that's what mortar did 26 yards the longest today for more furniture keys Pittsburgh the field from the 42 Scrolls comes in from behind and Larry foot also about nine-game on that what a good job by Philip Rivers wants to move up the pocket know where to go and how he knows his clothes is going to be sneaking out must be playing what hustle from behind buckle that chinstrap next time inside the go with you got all they needed second in the yard [Music] it's got the first you could vote for your favorite players for the 2009 Pro Bowl and nfl.com voting lines are open that will also enter you with a chance to win a trip to Hawaii to see the 2009 Pro Bowl vote online are on their mobile phone nfl.com slash Pro Bowl how you get there has the fall has tripped up by kersky they could do none a with a gain of eight talking about a having a play he comes in and a comes in this play is designed for him Troy Polamalu can't get there because he has to avoid Marcus McNeil good job on the left tackle getting out there and just being quick enough to make you oh he saw that flinch he didn't dip down a little bit he's gonna get run over second to they're going to lose a yard Harrison and foot the final the tackle that's three times now lt's been dropped for a loss yeah it started out it's such a good day of running the football for the Chargers and that's just recognition talent he saw the little the gap that was created by the pulling guard input just shot through what will they do now bird should they fail to move it Brian is Whibley gripper somehow got away it throws it away avoids the sack Aaron Smith also came in after the quarterback yeah that was a big throw away by Philip Rivers he gives him the field goal chance or the opportunity to go for it on fourth down and gotta be careful as a running back when you go too low on linebackers they'll jump over you and that's at that time that's what Willie did so now a chance to regain the lead we have 42 yard try ciphers on the hole David bend to snap it back then the bend was here when they danced to the Super Bowl the tip is no good why ride for me linked to the 8/7 League [Applause] everybody wants to hear what the president-elect has to say and there's only one place to hear it 60 minutes tonight on CBS the election tonight run it here Steelers after the missed field goal the ball correspond it at the point of the Miss Pepin 32 and Phil how about your spot line what do you say well this bunch rout the Steelers love to run the receivers cross net space sneaks in behind him he's wide open and then in crucial situations why they do it so defenders are off of them get some space and they just don't connect but they did get the receiver wide open Darnell Stapleton the Steelers right guard is down injury timeout tre Essex there he is 79 is coming at right guard for Darnell Stapleton get the pass over the state who has the first down we've got another update coming out of the studio in New York James Brown hey Jim Phil hates a quarterback being called a manager Kerry Collins is don't call me a manager either I can pass up top to just engage 51 yards to paydirt longest pass of the season pass played for the Titans three plays 63 yards they're up by three Jim and four [Applause] back from 14-3 on the road now to take the lead behind the two problems touchdown passes to the secretary for Barney okay Bernie Steelers just doing such a good job of really kind of finessing their way down the football field a lot of formations in the middle and a little run or throw out some of these looks when they throw up it's short but in this bunch round look at the blocking up front KO ma to [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] Terri's shy of the first they got a free play here Roethlisberger's pass school incomplete for space Robbins bucket pan will they bring back out Russell on third one we got Roethlisberger a little slow to get up there definitely third and one and yes they are they're gonna bring Russell right back in he delivered last time Roethlisberger I don't know if he got hurt on the hit or he was slipping so much trying to get his feet under underneath him to throw the football watching slide Oh the backward slid now he's off balance close it off target will get tangled in there too [Applause] the center gets it for the second time c-czar picks up four in a first he's delivered the goods twice at this quarter Steelers Bruce Arians the offensive coordinator not afraid to repeat plays something they've always done here in Pittsburgh ever since today's and Ron Earhart came down here would Bill Cowher if it works run it again when we saw that same plane did Gary Russell earlier work when he came back word he has to dance around the pocket that's going against Pittsburgh 5 start offense number 10 five-yard penalty here stay on CBS you can watch closely and see why the middle is is the biggest you hit of the season Simon Baker stars TVs number what you show it's Tuesday's on CBS America's most watched Network its first down a minute 49 to go in the third quarter the Chargers had to football one time missed it dominating the time of possession and number of plays running this game welcome to the one of the session Parker mentioned the first by says are the games for they have eight points good for the lead nine penalties while the leads not bigger stand on the goal line for the charge of defense the number of penalties and a couple key sacks by the San Diego defense Bruce Arians the offensive coordinator for Pittsburgh 11 from the San Diego 45k this formation makes the defense back off look at the coverage on the left sidebar gets that bunch round [Music] again splits the defenders what will they spotted Gooper Achilles or the two who collided with them yeah here it is again and watch what they're going to do they're all going to release of the field in state that's going to come out to come underneath it the receivers they distract you because of the speed and who they are and then Matt's bait comes underneath it wide open we saw it a few minutes ago we were hooked up he was wide open too so good design and again Steelers just keep staying with this formation to the charge though it's not in position murdering the Chargers today the space coming up big and a flag first false start offense number 72 five-yard penalty first down just a thought here about Roethlisberger till you know he had really struggled in the last two home games the last three games in fact overall one touchdown eight picks after starting the season with numbers that were three to one ratio nine touches three interception so far today a clean game for bid no pigs yeah just some very smart decisions going the football in rhythm on target with it the hands of Washington tell you what the Olympia is stopping him from completing almost every throw especially two on this drive is that he is slipping and just a little off-balance lets his arm get away from him a little farther than usual and that makes him throw it into the ground it's just enough that's not completed see what he can be hidden double-o sent on the fly [Music] [Music] burgers were about to go to the fourth eighth seventh leave Pittsburgh back after this message and a word from your local station [Applause] but that number one rush defense has locked it down ever since Roethlisberger been precise but primarily because they've been short throws today mistake-free and leading at 8 to 7 Tomlinson 70 total yards Roethlisberger 246 in the air it's the final 15 Jim Nantz will send Heinz Field Berthe down is set this is therefore the second time today has the quarterback behind the line of scrimmage good coverage down the field the situation that really favors the San Diego Chargers and they get that initial good coverage you're down the field Roethlisberger is looking to pick up the whole first down he was looking down the middle nobody open Antonio Cromartie very good coverage on the outside the charger deep bench wins again just hanging in there [Music] [Applause] will they market who says it's all the way out of the 18 only a 20-yard food these two AFC superpowers battling in a tight way at the fourth quarter Steelers with a win would be a game up on Baltimore Ravens have already lost today and in the North Division in the West Chargers can ill afford to go to back of Denver Broncos victorious at Atlanta this afternoon wisten Tim Rivers guns it looking for Vincent Jackson newer to Steelers in the area good in Brian Clark here is Nick Taylor one of the plays they were hoping to take advantage of but look at the cushion that I Taylor is given to Vincent Jackson and that allows him not even to think about going for these for the double move and you got to be careful that armbar sticking that right arm out to judgment call I've seen interference calls on a lot less than that yeah but the why you don't call it I think because initially he's covered there was no hope of him beat me even though he stuck there no game [Applause] [Music] is such a staple of so many offenses now these quick trolls outside it's a running play to the left Phillip Rivers even coverage is far off not in good judgment because we engage quick to recover and make the time gay starting today because this [Applause] they're also absent for three corner like that [Applause] one defensive lineman in the past deployed for the first and that was Fernando Bryant defending goes for 15 the other Purdue defensive lineman in there woman just standing up at Phillip Rivers right away knows he's gonna go outside because the coverage is off he throws that football way before Malcolm Floyd is turning and looking for lets practice time trust in your wide receiver we're gonna trust a little confidence in a whole lot of talent first down in ten over to the right side and it's chambers and pick up another quick first college football coming right next Saturday on CBS the Home Depot at CC Houston nuts Ole Miss rebels Charles Scott and the paiute Fingal's of LSU it all begins with the tiaa-cref bunch football today you know do gym go back to what we were talking about early in the game LaDainian Tomlinson has not been a huge factor here a big part of it but still single coverage to the outside Steelers protecting against to run now they go to Tomlinson is it's six down mondobot leona help clear the way on james harrison pushed him out of the way well they blocked there's Larry foot but watch his toy Polamalu he's been blocked in the hole in the Navy Thomas a good job of getting by him and getting that extra yarder to Hamilton 15 436 and first lesson touchdowns in September coming in the first quarter today his last two drives redzone interception and a missed field goal moving again rivers takes off slides for the first river five yard run for rivers barrier I think he wants to throw this he's dropping back bottom of your screen would you throw it here he comes across the field you'd have to anticipate it Philip Rivers hesitated just for a second and he did a smart thing run with the football if you hesitate and he would have 12 [Music] Exide safety right [Music] Yates has been quiet today as well Tomlinson whereas seven right before anyone puts a hand on it another good run given I'd play nice misdirection that's what you want to do full of defense that's fast Jeremy Clary again gets double teams and then gets off the defensive lineman and blocks James Farrior up the field look at that and your offensive tackles eight to ten yards down the field it's going to be good stuff [Applause] the charges when you looked at a model feel muga the chains one more time Tolbert picks up that inside yard we're getting a little rhythm going here now with ten minutes fast approaching tomorrow most emotional case ever on an all-new CSI Miami it's tomorrow on America's most watched Network just waiting for his chance to get back out there and maybe we're returning to the field with a deficit san diego's moving it as the pass deflected at the line by Keisel well what has stopped this Chargers all face today the maps and miscues you know the safety Phillip Rivers trying to make the play [Applause] bad judgment on the throw and then a missed field goal that would have put up a head so it again well the mill is going to be closed [Music] a one-point game the Steelers have a safety Steelers have been conservative on the defensive side so far this year's second out of 10 into the secondary and near another first and when I say they've been conservative right away here comes the Blitz and they come free the Blitzers are free Larry Foote nobody blocked me but lived Damien Thomlinson saw it beard just far enough to his left before he cuts it back watch him move around when he grew to defenders in the backfield excellent run by Lavinia Tomlinson it's pretty fast on a slow field I mean you know a Hawaii has on this series and he's over 15,000 career yards and scribbles but the first blows never had a chance to show us how fast he looks on any kind of field playing edition Scrolls its first rush of the day no game you know James Brown said something about Kerry Collins do you don't want to be called a manager you know management and then concede you need to have talent to go out and win them but when you talk about situations here's Philip Rivers you know as a quarterback now it's eight to seven we field goal attempt before now so then has to you play the next couple of offensive plays but drive that began back at their own 1812 play of the drive he's looking for comments England goes down the field then that's out of Al Chambers good reload he nuts the thorn of Nene comes the coverage was just flying towards him and he stops and throws it outside the Chris Chambers good coverage by Taylor no such thing anymore need opposing force out no matter what we gotta catch him to hit your feet employ back in fail to pick up any yardage skating would come back out to be 41 yards somewhere in that range he's old at this point forty-two in this hand the other end bird intend to throw and as caught at the 6 yard line by Vincent Jackson one pass protection will pass the same hagel offensive line there is a blitz look at all the Blitzers they got four of them to one side and they pick it all the way up for long enough where James here some of the time he comes all the way around it's too late Philip Rivers already stepped in to throw and that was one of his festival first at goal because a big hit to Harrison hit him so hard he knocked his feet off the ground Pass is deep down the sidelines the charges do first and goal Tomlinson set the couple comments on the bar barrier I've been Roethlisberger stand on the sidelines goes well no matter what we're gonna be behind so he knows once again Harrison it's gonna be put on his shoulders we've got four yards to negotiate and wonder if anybody over there is thinking about two should they score a touchdown would you want to go for two drive has taken over eight minutes yeah Jimmy won't he be a question you absolutely will one up top for it rivers one out and his pass all those picked off oh my goodness Ripper's who had thrown of redzone interception for the first time in his career four games earlier today oz had another one Jim I'm telling you Norv Turner would have made the tackle theta intercepted he flew off that bench but you got to see in front of the receiver that is the number one thing as a quarterback for a football that you gotta learn to do of course Phillip Rivers knows how to do it that is way too risky of a throw in this situation in this type of game where a field goal sixteenth this dry river sua stone touchdown 16 consecutive game calls inside seven minutes remaining at 8/7 Pittsburgh Li trying to get back to 500 mike tomlin side trying to take that north division lead by one full game over the Raven [Applause] the last three home games for the Steelers have come down to the last 30 minutes or overtime Chargers have so since in situations like this [Applause] and goal rivers tosses it up into place he is looking for games brilliant Touche Townsend's old teammate at Alabama just signed this week they did in the assignment yes sorry team we controlled turned down for Nando Brian is on the outside the whole time and he knows Antonio Gates ex-basketball player you don't mind giving him a chance boy that was risky again no I think Nate Kaeding was not missed from inside 40 yards this season which is just two yards outside of point after distance 22 yards to regain the lead Payton gets it in a murderous 17 play drive for free the Pittsburgh Steelers that's the most pleased anyone drive by an opponent this year but they did clamp down inside the 10 of them to a field goal Russell who is convert on a couple of third and 1 situations is the returner he'll get a chance to run this one maybe won't put that away Russell somehow was able to wiggle free [Applause] blaghhh my goodness this was looking like Russell was going to be down about the eight or nine yard line somehow managed to pick up 27 out of it but it may not matter anyway [Music] or penalties during the run back receiving team 10-yard penalty push them Roethlisberger of us lead them back down to ten eight since the Falcons and Steelers here 2002 beginning at the 13 yard line Ward it's one move and that move picks up a first down in 13 yards something been doing all day safe throws underneath it's worked for the Chargers can't do the bintang but don't break this time because you can't afford to give up a field goal attempt to the Steelers the drive that began for the fourth time and nine drives of the day inside the home fifth Anne Parker breaks two tackles steps out after a gain of nine got away from Clinton Hart for those of you expecting to see 60 minutes you're watching the NFL on CBS that Chargers and the Steelers in a tight one Jim Nance along with Bill Simms 10-8 lead by San Diego Obama's president-elect Obama's first interview since the election is coming up on 60 minutes immediately after this game except on the west coast where you'll see it at its normal time they gave him 10 they gave him the spot for the first down the 36 it is a first and tenth form and offensive line look for the Chargers that's Weddell and Harris knock it down Parker again the AFC North six and three did stay ahead of Baltimore that Chuck sees they're down on the field we'll take an injury timeout we're back at Heinz Field choksi's air has had a big day two sacks he's slow to make his way to the sidelines they've already lost Luis Castillo joint injuries not going to return today we've got regional action next week and look at that game at one o'clock in the anchor position there the Jets at Tennessee headlines the day next week on CBS with the NFL today of course getting it all started in grand fashion at noon Eastern Time JV Dan Shannon : coach power next week on CBS jets in Tennessee too many of you Bingham has come in Ryan Bingham replace he's there again testy also not available for the second down play and it's worn open into San Diego territory we'll help 4:15 yeah it's a good job Ben Roethlisberger top of your screen Hines Ward just comes in doesn't stop and go round on Matt Wilhelm and it is tough to cover down another charger hurt Quint jammer thank so much of it this field just slick enough Tim where players trying to stop and create some tough spots cool Maurice Castillo our Martinez cause the field those are the types of injuries you get on slick surfaces so jammer comes out Paul Oliver his end Stephens going into the rib [Applause] the penalty penalties have been such a big part of the story for Pittsburgh today to be the 12th offense against the Steelers season-high in penalties in penalty yards offense number 86 Wow - Oh more than they and they're over a hundred yards in penalties [Applause] as you said number 12 on the day to hit me back to the game why are they losing 10 to 8 that stopped the goal-line twelve penalties Hines Ward number 86 got his arm you could see it on Giles Tucker he got his arm way on the outside wrapped it around very easy to see we talked about it all the time didn't doing games then you get to her hands and arms outside the shoulder pads [Applause] it's at a first in 20 back to the Pittsburgh side of the field half remaining [Applause] of San Diego update time back to New York and James Brown Jim 21 unanswered points for Tennessee Kerry Collins can you pass yes I can pass up top again just engage 38-yard hookup that goes along with the 56 yarder earlier 24:14 tennessee the jacksonville back to Jim and Phil all right Thank You JB and I know the two of us are looking forward to seeing Tennessee perhaps if they hold on here 10 to no next week maybe one of the Jets [Applause] Roethlisberger his faith [Applause] forty-two big third down play is coming up here Phil well it is look at it good job by Ben Roethlisberger inter-syrian phloem plays just to pick some of the yards up the San Diego Chargers are going to make them get this in two plays that's what they're trying to do this team though still have three timeouts and if they don't get this first down on this try big decision whether to go for on fourth [Applause] 35 to the first they'll be more frightening Roethlisberger pick up the pro stock close and pass it is corn how for the herds it got through there he bought himself some time you see the pressure he gets on the blog that he waits and he throws it down and love gets it in there before Stephen Cooper can get to Hines Ward [Music] we'll look like Giles Tucker kid on how to play on lifeless burger but again I think he slipped a little bit on that shaky feel first down from the 34 with two and a half to go [Applause] and it did even closer [Applause] this is maybe in all the stadiums on the lead the open and the Pittsburgh is one of the hardest places to make a field goal but they are inching closer for Jeffrey while sharp cut by Santonio Holmes throw my bid Roethlisberger and he is being smart and extremely careful with the football and he's about to be rewarded because of that today bends over 300 passing worth the two-minute warning and for some recent rough rides at home Roethlisberger as his first 300 yard game at Heinz Field in two years say what Jim he was close to playing this type of let game last week against Memphis Colts but we've talked about it many times when you make two mistakes in an NFL game now as close as most enough most of them are it's magnified especially when you do it at home shaking up a couple of plays ago first down with a car to play down the from six the San Diego offense we put they had that one long drive that you know the last time they had at seventeen planes but we barely seen them in this app in terms of opportunity time out pulled by San Diego they have only one remaining tonight on CBS everybody wants to hear what the president-elect has to say there's only one place to hear it it's coming up on 60 minutes Barack Obama's first interview since the election followed by new episodes of The Amazing Race cold case and the unit it's all tonight on America's number one Network AFC West Denver already a winner today an impressive win over Atlanta and San Diego trying to prevent a two-game differential well the Chargers this kind of capitalizes their season their defense can't get off the field their offense get so few chances and if it goes against them today the way you've seen everything goes it's going to be hard for me to put together a full game winning if you have three and a row coming up in order to this they've got to come up with some sort of special play now man's world Willie Parker and now the steers will have the chance to run this down basically all the way down to the very last second and said I breathe yep now it's just going to come down can you block the field goal attempt that's if you stop him from running it into the end zone and I tell you if he was to kick it knock it through it would be an 11-10 final and never in the history of the National Football League has there been a game in 11:10 we've talked about play differential that's really harness the charges this season it's another big story here today not giving up a touchdown but they have not given the offensive any chances to be out there and on the field so much and that safety so huge the one by James Harrison in the first half Jim when you give up eight points it's hard to complain about the defense no matter how long they've been on the field they've done their jump no question you've got to put that on the offense the offense the San Diego Chargers is two strengths of this football team that's how they're going to win they just hope to survive on the defensive side until they get it straightened out until they start playing better and change it over from what they were and they've done some good stuff under Rodney the verities first two weeks but they had to hang on last week and stop a two-point conversion we've got the block of he'll go to win today up on some of the finishes to their games this year with two up at Denver the controversy week one baked alone on the whole question starts right there last play of the game alright San Diego's burned its last timeout never lost a regular-season game Parker moves the pile down to the three I always think if I was a head coach I got in a situation like this would I let him score to give myself at least a chance or do you feel better walk in the field goal I think your chances because now basically it's a point after distance wouldn't you think your better chance is the 45-second let him just go ahead and score and put that offense back out there and ask them to do something it would be tough just because the time Alvin was what would stop me from you need a you need a touchdown that's all [Music] it's Parker Parker's going to go outside to the endzone for the touchdown there is a flag there is a flag and it's to be against the steamers I believe holding offense number 49 10-yard penalty hold on till on McHugh and this makes that field goal try all the more interesting top of the screen number 49 there's no question about it his tucker yep left on was handcuffed one look at that left arm is getting outside of Giles Tucker and pulls him down with it the football now comes all the way back to the 14 [Applause] we was 13 for most in six years and may have called the timeout [Applause] but what do you do to kick the field goal on third down just in case and snip the holder bobbles the football or maybe a bad snap because that is a little bit of an issue and this is a new battery if you will between the long snapper Jared ripped off he just signed a couple of weeks ago with Paul Ernst resigned last week and we've already seen one eye snap earlier that did not get away from him they've got Roethlisberger still on the field I would think that would be you know some consideration these two these two have been working together for two weeks I would kick it Jim just because of what you said that would be enough to make me keep the football or scare me Mike Tom and you got to be a little cautious in a situation like this [Applause] and that's what they're going to do they are bringing in the field and they brought upon it they summon raucous quarterback to the satellite in case the snap or the hole gets away from him you can fall long and still have two timeouts and you can get another reload [Music] once he seen it that's why he's made this decision to kick it on third day you gotta get a kicker [Applause] for the impressive read and his career has never missed in the last two minutes before quarter or in overtime and in his mind or his team is trailing by three or fewer we will attempt a podium to garter shoot which has a hole around the big toe it's an open toe if you will left foot wernstrom let's pick that as last word to the quicker [Applause] this is all the way it's dead center [Applause] that was a tremendous by the Pittsburgh Steelers their offense what a way to answer for last week over 2 some crucial passes he made especially the third down one to Hines Ward they had a snap was perfect that red costea's do burn stir got the laces around spun it perfectly and read drilled it sniff read we've won the game in overtime against Baltimore this year with a field goal in 46 yards some pretty impressive hang time that for Jeffrey with Turner gave it every ounce of badi influency good chef Rina was working on a friend's dairy farm when the Steelers called them back in 2002 for a tryout came here and tried out with three other Kinder's attempted ten field goals in front of Bill Cowher and team executives right here at Heinz Field he won the job the Pittsburgh Steelers without a touchdown today but take the lead 1110 looking to go to seven and three C's seconds left the short boots kick its co Martok's brother step fitness goals and he's duck by Davis still time for one 60 minutes is coming up for all of you except on the west coast you'll get it later in the normal time the first interview with president-elect Obama since the election it's coming up straight ahead here on America's number one network Oh Marty his wallet after he tossed it back two Scrolls Steelers in the middle leg of a three-game homestand in 11 days they come right back and play here on Thursday night against the Bengals we tied a Philadelphia today they're playing tough look at those Knicks games New England Dallas Baltimore Tennessee take anything away from Cleveland those other four all big time playoff we've got four players back at the 45-yard line well hold on a minute timeout call by Pittsburgh San Diego barring a miracle here will fall the four and six and then post the Colts who have won three in a row that's next Sunday night and then Atlanta comes in they got a three-game homestand of their own Oakland team they've already defeated that they had to come back from 15 nothing down to beat the Raiders this year travel to Kansas City Tampa at home against Denver it's a division Phil that really you know nine and seven could very easily win the AFC West so you don't want to say a four and six that then there's the seasons not lost rather one there's a couple good things for them they get to play at home three straight and they get to play the Denver Broncos at home were they going to make up a two game deficit as of right now this is going to be tough for the judges this will discuss the defense is not they go short and they start [Applause] No Palmolive scoops it up and he's aim for a touchdown they do in fact by the end zone as the game is [Applause] you still kind of stayed take the extra Moyes the players the feel chip they're gonna have to go I know it means nothing but they're still going to have to finish this game Chargers doing what they had to do a little trick play something you have fun with you work at the end of practice and Troy Polamalu saw it attack the football want to play Roethlisberger watching hey he's gonna sleep good tonight the way he played and he just waited and waited never took a chance today Ben Roethlisberger and he was rewarded for that patience in his decision-making until the football as well as he did and for all those numerologist out there who were longing for that first ever 1110 game in NFL history you'll have to wait a little longer look at the AFC playoff picture with Tennessee at 10:00 and oh that's a 10-point final today Titans over the Jaguars 24 14 Pittsburgh and the Jets jockeying for a 1st week by Andover still six games out to go in the regular season actually a review right now from up top on this last play we received word [Applause] is there a forward pass that he got it looked like everyone I was watching was a lateral miss chambers that's backwards no question backers what a switch is same as a fumble you are allowed to pick it up and run it in [Applause] chambers [Applause] about the two plays by Pokemon today you know it's been three hours since he made that other brilliant fingertip pick in the first quarter right I forgot about it was so long ago to stop a rough San Diego going right down the field on the opening drive Vincent Jackson wide open football hits him in the chest toy Polamalu intercepts it about an inch off the ground he anticipated that lateral coming back over from chambers to theirs Marcus McNeil who fell on the fumble on previous plays the penalty is declined touchdown I think McNeil sang you know what I've touched the football enough times now to last me a career deck so now just an extra point to put it into the books another bizarre ending for San Diego and another heartbreak loss in the part of four and six hard to believe as good as they are as much talent but it's happened to the San Diego Chargers this year would have killed the clay good remaining on the ten o'clock the game is over all right Scott Greene calls it official it's official no need to even try the point after 1710 looks like a perfectly normal 1710 score but it was anything but that are well they're taking that they are oh they are taking that off it's illegal forward pass he seen why not go back late and they've already summoned it for about two minutes so those confusion even there for the officials the ball was dead right on the spot is their point the word we get so scratch the touchdown I know there's a lot of people now be happy there was an 11 10 final it deserves it as strange as it was it was it was still a hard fall exciting game even in 11 it did a lot of fun to do so they take the touchdown off the board just a review yes they did I did not see the illegal forward pass so I can get into foot 11 10 Pittsburgh final Jim Nantz and Phil Simms st. so long from Pittsburgh you
