[Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] puts on a move jacob's still on his feet all the way down close to the 15-yard line where eric coleman catches him after a 27-yard gain and a block for more downfall what a clever little move there by omar jenkins so you get a big run by ryan grant and then the senior omar jenkins that what's the move there inside and then a little bit further right there he runs right by jason david to pick up an extra seven or eight yards best offensive drive for the irish in the game by far but can they get some points at the end of it ball rests at the 16-yard line of the cougars notre dame with an upheld climb prior to that first down four of notre dame's last five as a result of cougar penalties this time they're getting some positive [Applause] [Music] holiday plays out of the pocket sexist feet lost it out of bounds and incomplete dave at that time ryan grant did pick up the blitz of will dirty remember in the first half they didn't do a very good job of that he was beaten a couple of times over that time he got a good piece of will dirty and though it wasn't a completed pass it wasn't a sack or a fumble one of the things the irish should be working on this next week is their blitz pickup long dry spell for the notre dame offense they've gone two games in three quarters good thing i think they use carla he's such a good runner [Applause] [Music] they'll use ryan grant's legs and he's wrestled down for a loss on the play [Applause] penetration by virgil williams the strong safety two what two interceptions last week in their opening game caused at least one fumble today but has been around the ball a lot and here they are again in third and long third and 12 for the irish after this nice play yeah good tackling team don't you think yeah they are you don't break many cougar tackles virgil williams holding on on the foot that time but got the job done so as the shadows lengthen over notre dame stadium the irish with a crucial third down third and 12 from the shotgun takes a lot of time when they're down 19-6 holiday quarterback draw nothing stop for another loss this one by josh shavey it was different he's a good story number 44 for washington state a guy that was really highly recruited started his freshman year at tight end then got out of shape they actually made him quit the team had some attitude problems threw him off the team he came back as a walk-on he's making a difference instead of to try another field goal this one will be 39 yards [Music] [Applause] set his kick on its way and it is good [Music] nicholas setter with his third field goal and four attempts today but the clock shows 1209 and the irish still down 10. [Music] a truck like this isn't built in a factory it's built in the farms and fields concrete streets and crowded construction sites that map the landscape of an entire country [Music] because when ford builds the new f-150 there are promises to keep and only one trucker earned the right to be the next f-150 if you haven't looked it forward lately look again [Music] got a dry scratchy throat trihal's fruit freezers with a mouth-watering fruit tingle hall's fruit freezers gives your throat a cooling lift any time hall's fruit breezers treat your throat notre dame football is brought to you by the next ford f-150 it's here by paul's fruit breezers when screaming fans need cool soothing relief from a dry scratchy throat they reach for a hall screwed breezers hauls fruit freezers creature throat buy adidas soccer own it and you own the game and by michelin because so much is riding on your tires [Music] xylophone rendition of the notre dame victory march but they've serenaded only field goals so far today one of the best didn't it maybe the best that's the way they announce it every time at the game the people of michigan might disagree hey yes senators kick off to moore and smith a deep one from nicholas setter and a touchback they'll come out to the 20. well pat we have a new task for you this weekend it's identifying our halls fruit freezers screaming fan of the game here's some candidates she's not screaming there's a candidate yeah we're number one those guys nice smile but no screaming out of that guy he's not a candidate she's going to win the lipstick award we'll get some lipstick for her but she's not screaming enough but this guy you think i've got one hand [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] i think the whole washington state section needs something yeah take a car load back last 12 possession washington state ran 12 plays they had to punch but they did run off six and a half minutes they'll work on the clock again with a handoff to jermaine green point and why and curry this is tacklers for notre dame you know this offensive line for washington state we haven't talked a lot about yet but they have had a very solid game i haven't opened necessarily a lot of giant holes for the russian game but they protected matt keagle well these guys are very very tall they're going to go 6-7 6-7 6-7 and 6-9 the center's only 6-2 i didn't mention him [Applause] [Music] completes the pass and the ball is loose it's a completion and a fumble recovery by the irish well i'll say those officials aren't sure yeah they're going to give it to him made it happen with the hit and the irish as they did a year ago create a turnover and get right back in it down by 10. the quick pass to the tight end good call in this kind of situation then a real tackle did he have possession says yes i'm not so sure but glen earl makes a recovery [Music] [Applause] top call he did he did take a couple of steps i think he did second what a hit yeah well then we set up one field goal with a return and then set up as a team again with a fourth fumble so spots the ball into washington 25 after kegel's pass complete and then fumbled [Applause] best field position of the day for notre dame they go to julius jones washington state strings it out but jones escapes julius jones fights his way to the two-yard line jason smith with a block from the fullback spot it covers 23 yards for jones and i'll tell you one other thing that you will notice unless you watch the tape tomorrow is omar jenkins the wide receiver taking his defensive back i think it was an absolute pass and takes the defensive back all the way down to the goal line there's the block by the fullback you just talked about and see the defensive back's way up here because omar jenkins took him down there with him pretty good execution all the way around and the irish have a chance to make it a three-point game spotting out of bounds at about the seven yard line so first and goal notre dame on the washington state seven [Applause] the bumble snap and the cougars recovered no they've interrupted they don't know they say notre dame has it you know [Music] [Applause] i sure thought he had it too number 17. gordon reese the referee was right there and gave it to notre dame wow [Applause] this is a fourth missed exchange now they use two different centers [Applause] right there and then they just did a great job carlisle holiday with a quick hand swiped it best play of the day seriously by carlo holliday right there but another botched exchange zach giles is playing center bob morton at guard replacing sean milligan who is injured and has been out this whole quarter he's been fighting a back injury the three-year starter for the irish good call by gordon reese's [Music] [Applause] mcknight [Applause] after the 11-yard touchdown pass holiday to mcknight that is point after barely slips through the upright and it's good as the momentum swings to the irish now down only three [Applause] with 10 32 left in the game mcknight's touchdown and the point after making a three-point game 19-16 washington state [Music] i am your joy your pain i have a gift [Music] your last chance [Music] okay one more time where do we stand less travel more video conferences limit the cell phone minutes that's not good enough we're not leaving this room unless we can cut something else can they really keep us here what about all this stuff what stuff all this stuff what does it cost to create all this time effort people how much it could be millions come on don't let anything stop you from satisfying your late night hunger taco bell is open late tonight pick up a spicy chicken burrito with shredded chicken simmering authentic mexican spices wanna spice up the night think outside the bun open till midnight or later the drum of nascar is on tnt tonight the chevy rock and roll 400 from richmond at 7. the race for the nascar championship is on tnt notre dame football on nbc continues in two weeks as the rival michigan state spartans roll into south bend to battle the fighting irish september 20th on nbc nicola kicks off fielded at the one yard line moore broke a tackle and then taken down past the 20-yard line sort of the 25 there's rhema mcknight the sophomore from la palma california just scored his first irish touchdown and watched a good route good slant perfect throw by holiday breaks the tackle to get in the end zone so carlisle hollandaise made two great plays one was really swiping the fumble away from uh d.d archulano and then making that perfect fill for the touch so two good plays back to back by holiday premium ignite now with four catches 28 yards including the biggest touchdown of his irish career the only one and the cougars have to turn it in in a different gear they got to play it really like an even game matt keagle on first down has a man open in the center of the defense it's darling garen bible tackles him but a nice gain and a first down for washington state he covered 14 yards and darling was wide open indeed he's been wide open over that middle and davar darlings one of those guys is not afraid to go over the middle and catch it right here a little slant route perfect timing again if you throw the ball on time in front of the receiver you can get some yards after the catch but indeed darling [Applause] first down at the 37 of the cougars flag down and so is jonathan smith aaron bible second straight tackle [Applause] against the cougars [Music] illegal formation offense only six men on the line of scrimmage penalties declined second down that is the fourth time they've only had six minimalized for all the good things they've done today that's a curious lapse something they've not been able to correct penalty decline making it second down and 10. [Applause] matt keagle's had the hot hand lately has hit his last six passes in a row play-action fake kegel rolling to his right delivering the pass to his tight end again venoman this time but a short gain just to the 41-yard line tackled by jerome collins [Music] very very important down now for matt [Music] even with the three-point lead it feels like they're losing at this point the momentum has really swung to the iris and the fans back in the game and every receiver needs to get down past the first down market about six yards to go six defensive backs here for the irish duff jackson bible parish burrell earl play clock at two it'll that should be a delay it should be a delay right finally they see it oh that's a bad penalty that is a really poor penalty in washington state but they've played so well and so far [Applause] down now you go from the third and five where you could conceivably you'll throw a screen run a draw now you throw that down the field 12 penalties now for over 100 yards third down at ten fox shows eight minutes 45 and counting [Applause] protection first and watch out for the top down here he's the guy who caused the fumble earlier is showing a blitz they back out of it kegel scrambles he's going to run for it and he's hammered down at the 44-yard line short of the first down by garen bible who made three tackles on that series okay a smart play though by kegel not fortunate but again ken bears defense they do their job so kyle bosler will punt in julius jones who has the chance to set the all-time kickoff return record for the irish this season is going to return this punt instead of duff low snap fosler nice punch dude jones shouldn't field it there and he doesn't that goes into the end zone for the touchback 55-yard punch but the touch back will bring it out to the 20 where the irish will take over trailing by three [Music] i will not be afraid of the dark i will not feel guilty leaving my dog alone i will know look again i am your joy your pain i have a gift [Music] i am an ally and a traitor the reason you'll be remembered be remembered or lost i am your first love your last [Music] chance to help a child grow up they sometimes need a gentle nudge you're moving out mom we love you so much tuesday a young man's journey to manhood cool pizza will end with the lady next door as soon as you can see i have a new girlfriend where are your pants happy family premieres tuesday 8 30 7 30 central [Applause] 7 44 left and the issues still in doubt washington state leads notre dame 1916 irish take over at their own 20-yard line handoff to ryan grant spinning his way forward for three or four yards tackled by al genotone you know carlo holliday had a terrific series that last series of his and you know he's had moments in his career last year in the opener against beryl he played sensationally he was clutch at the end of the games last year against michigan and navy played very well against florida state where he threw two touchdowns and here they are in their hurry up offense notre dame won eight possessions without any points their last five they've gotten 16 points blitz from the cougars holiday in the pocket down the sideline too far for his intended receiver omar jenkins holiday hits the ground and a flag does as well down field and holiday is hurt i think they're going to call holding on carl pema the corner number nine is the sophomore pat dillinger jr actually he came in seven games last season had the one start holding defense 10 yards from the previous spot automatic first down the penalties continue to bedevil the cougars while they deal with carlisle holliday's injury dillingham you remember the backup quarterback former walk-on had the game-winner against michigan state started in the win against stanford you know brady quinn is actually number 10 taking snaps brady quinn the freshman who we were told would be the backup no college experience wow i mean if they do put brady quinn they have an awful lot of confidence in the guy quinn the freshman dublin ohio kaufman high school all-stater twice captain of his team last year in his senior season passed for nearly 2 200 yards and 25 touchdowns holiday trots off the field he's going to have to come out for at least a play meanwhile pat the 13th penalty against washington state 113 yards now if you're just going to run the ball i i put pat tilling in him in there and just make a handoff right i mean if you're going to throw the ball and brady quinn is supposed to have a great arm you give him a chance it's going to be quinn so a freshman will take his first snap opening game at notre dame stadium with his team trailing by three and just over seven minutes left awesome experience for him how fast is his heart beating down play it will be a handoff a hand off to jones julius jones it was interesting talking to bill diedrich yesterday about brady quinn he said if brady quinn comes in we're not going to pull in our horse i mean we're going to the entire playbook is available for him and interestingly though carlyle holly is ready to come in but so far has not been sent onto the field and i think they want to see one pass out of him at least it'll be ryan grant coming in and he's surprised he stays at quarterback surprised if he didn't get a chance to heave it once meanwhile pat julius jones six carries 32 yards and his return to the irish lineup second and eights [Applause] [Music] another handoff to grant grant cuts back breaks free ryan graham splits the fenders grant to the 35 hollard at the 25-yard line carl pema prevented the touchdown good blocks from lavor and jenkins as ryan grant cuts back for 38 yards i'll tell you that that is a determined team and a determined run by ryan grant should have gone down two or three times early in this run right there on this tackle by coleman goes to another arm tag and he does a great job of switching the ball into his left hand to keep the you know the fumble and mark lavor you mentioned the left guard and then omar jenkins the wide receiver does so many things well for the irish throws a good block first down at the cougar 27 still the quarterback and the way they were jumping it looked like a false start for the irish a couple of washington state defenders flinched but i think they were drawn off before the snap full start offense five yards to the previous spot still first down ryan grant the big run for the irish five-yard penalty though makes it first down and 15. one of the things about tyrone willingham if you're capable of playing he's going to play you whether you're a freshman software junior senior a walk-on a transfer whatever you can help his football team you're gonna play right now [Applause] joe for a big hole jones cuts back jones to the 11 yard line tackled by isaac brown 21 yards as the irish now begin to wear down washington state for the run [Applause] great run by ryan grant and they give julius jones his chance and he responds i mean they struggled so much with the run but they just since they got back in the ball game the offensive line did a better job and these guys are breaking tackles yeah there was a huge hole then but yeah how nice is it to have fresh legs having the two good running indeed and as we talked about ryan grant at the end of last season he was worn out brady quinn quarterback cougars against showing blitz and the handoff trying to turn the corner jones and a nice tackle there made by jeremy bohannon who took the legs out from underneath julius jones to stop him he did get out of bounds clock arrested at 5 11. [Applause] [Music] spot the ball at the 14-yard line a loss of two yards on the play and flynn is still not gotten the call for the pass but you know his body language i think is good i mean oftentimes you can tell by the body language with quarterback whether the situation's too big for him it certainly does not look too big for for brady big compliment of timeouts on each side second down and 12. [Applause] quinn directing traffic like a veteran and it could be a delay a game as quinn was calling omar jenkins closer into the formation he may have exceeded the 25 second clock before the snap full start offense five yards from the previous stop just take it down it wasn't delayed false start is that different cadence yeah it could be it could well be and i think you know one of those that play there they were going to try to sneak out uh powers kneel to pull back into the flat that's why i wanted that receiver to come down a little tighter the fullback was going to go out behind him and should have been opened again to the sideline to get the call but indeed it is a different cadence now second and 17 after the five yard step off i think you're trying to get the full back of the flap hand it to joe joe's trying to turn the corner breaking tackles julius jones touchdown [Music] [Applause] [Music] julia jones his first touchdown since he scored against nebraska in ninth in 2000 that one went 19 yards since he broke about three tackles to get in the end zone set up for the point after up and through well there's been a lot of speculation on what the return of julius jones would mean for the notre dame offense you have your answer diving for the score and for the first time this season notre dame is in front the touchdown by julius jones a determined 19-yard gallop makes it 23-19 [Music] michelin designed the cross-terrain suv tire specifically for suvs to help provide responsive handling and a smooth ride you'd be surprised just how smooth now buy four michelin tires and get a free jvc dvd player visit your michelin dealer today offer ends september 27th michelin because so much is riding on your tires androids [Music] any sign of body heat will give them away a heating duct your body heat triggers it re-engineered degree for men an extra kick of protection every time you need it new degree for men kicks in in the clutch we engineered a material behind the dash called quiet steel only the new ford f-150 has it which means it's the only truck to deliver this the sound of quality the sound of the quietest pickup period only this truck earned the right to be the next f-150 if you haven't looked it forward lately look again you can do anything but they'll be watching we can see what you're doing i know james khan joshua god i love this town las vegas nbc monday in three weeks notre dame has the lead for the first time 23-19 with 503 left washington state needs a touchdown field goal will leave them a point short here's nicholas set us kick more and smith with a deep man then another strong kid from seta sends more right out of the end zone let's go have a look at this run by julius jones because well blocked watch the power and the strength of julius jones he should have been tackled there at least once and bounces off a couple other other bodies you know tom we talked about how he went the offseason to live with his brother in arizona work on his strength eating better and he looks a lot stronger to me yeah the word was he had come back after his year absence much stronger and he certainly looked it on that 19-yard tackle breaking play i mean for a team washington state who has tackled so well all day he broke some big tackles right there almost like they've worn them down here in the fourth quarter because suddenly notre dame has come alive meanwhile matt keagle trying to pull it out for the cougars he's hit his last seven passes that looks like a false start oh they've had a lot of them and you know there's five minutes left in this game i mean there's a lot of twists and turns left in this football game so notre dame can't get too excited about taking the lead they've got another good defensive series is what they need boston offense five years from previous spot still first down now from the 15-yard line first down and 15 bill dova bringing his cougars into notre dame stadium for the first time ever homecoming for the man who celebrates his 63rd birthday tomorrow dominating the game until the irish come alive late kegel that could have been an interference call i thought that i thought it was glenn earl got there early was on number 80 cody boy he was trying to get the ball to i thought he hit him a little bit early but no flags we're going to throw a flag on our stats man today that was julius jones first touchdown since navy in 2001. there we go in any event they were happy to have it at the appropriate time second down and 15. five wide receivers empty backfield kegel batted in the air and incomplete i think i'm not sure derek curry maybe 49 got his hand on it oh greg paulie i'm not sure somebody there in the center it's a big tip regardless one of the things i'm the irish i'm certainly going to try to take away davar darling on this third and 15. he can stretch the field here's third down and 15. big play in the game right here washington state looking to convert on third and long matt keagle hit as he releases and it's intercepted derrick curry picked it off for notre dame that was a poor decision and perhaps a poorer fraud and matt keagle hasn't made medium today but that certainly was at no time did that ball have a chance to be caught by a washington state player kyle button zach defensive end for the irish injured on the play here's the interception you're really just kind of playing that prevent in the zone thrown right to him and the pressure on kegel i think hit just as he released might have meant that he came up short on the on the throw watcher there's hilliard he got him yeah he couldn't really get a lot of steam on it or it was actually campbell daryl campbell will hit him the washington state defense now has to respond and notre dame's defense has curry who made the interception the senior from seeley texas you know it's amazing we watched the notre dame team at halftime going in and a lot of them had their heads you know they were hanging their heads this is an incredibly inspired notre dame team right now offensive explosion in the fourth quarter carlisle holliday returns at quarterback notre dame has bran and jones together rushing for 164 yards grant has 95 in the handoff to ryan graham flag is down is he stopped at the line of scrimmage by don jackson [Music] and a hold against the irish still 445 left and with the penalty the irish will be penalized on the play and face first and long holding offense 10 yards from previous spot still first down and let's take a look at our adt defensive play of the game again defensive play path it really turned the game around yeah you remember you know who caused this fumble by a terrific hit and that really started the momentum shift they got the iris right back at the game and now they lead by four but they face a first down and 20 from the 45-yard line of the cougars fontes death with that defensive play he figured he'd be right in the middle of something if the irs were to make a comeback had a good return had some defensive plays and sure enough duff was in the middle of the action as the irish have turned it around in the second half no more jake is up here number eight he's done a lot of little things well for the irish caught a couple passes ryan grant written down at the line of scrimmage and then thrown back by the cougar defense led by bachelornu you know each of these teams in the second half have taken their turn of being conservative it's really almost like an even game with four minutes left washington state is fully capable of driving down the field because of the wide receivers they have there's always that danger of playing a little too close to the vest which washington state i think did in the third quarter they had that one six and a half minute drive but it looked like they were doing exactly the right thing by chewing up the clock because the notre dame offense has shown no signs of life on the fourth quarter here they've completely turned it around on holiday after the fate holiday turns the corner and then driven out of bounds [Music] coleman and david [Applause] but carlisle holiday out of bounds 13-yard gain will they give nick a chance this is fourth right they're going to put him put the ball at the 33-yard line he'll be a long one [Music] okay you know what washington was so successful and that first half is blitzing carlo holla in the second half they really haven't gotten too much they win five sacks in the first half i don't believe they've sacked him in the second well notre dame really has apparently altered their protection to pick up those blitzes they're just asking for the better as well blitz here and a handoff to jones junior jones to the 30-yard line eric coleman with a tackle he said i wasn't down i think you got to get a chance to try to make it a seven-point game don't you sure minutes 11 seconds left tyrone's gonna wait fourth down and five facing the irish cougars call timeout stopped at the 307 mark as the cougars in anticipation of getting the ball back stop the clock and that is their first time out of the second half you know nick setters who's doing both the planning and the kicking this year really had i considered three separate seasons a year ago got off to a great start started six of seven then it hit a slump went two for eleven and finished strongly at six and seven i think tyrone willingham handled that slump that 2-11 slump i think as well as a coach can i i believe you'd handle quarterbacks and kick her a little bit differently he remember we talked to him he said oh he's not having a slump they're just not going in for him and he hung in there and was patient and with his kicker and was rewarded at the end of the year and that missed 47 yarder today was a botched hold actually it wasn't set as fault and coach willingham expressed some concern about the different leg motions required to both punt and place kick and sena dismissed that he just laughed and said no that's not going to bother me at all he said if you think that when i'm going to attempt a punt that i will give it the cross leg field goal kick motion you're incorrect it shouldn't be a problem well last year there were seven guys who did both in the ncaa which i i found a little surprising a lot of them here they are all stuff the big ones at ucla and so it's a rare thing indeed 119 division one schools it's like about a 47-yard attempt this guy blocking him in the past 47 yards has it up and it is good great opening game for nick setta just as it was last year when he went five for five against marion [Applause] you know your opening game you're so glad to have your kicker and your punter back and for tyrone it's the same guy [Applause] looks like a different irish team in the second half their lead is seven for the price of this bottle how many glasses of pure filtered water can you get this should give you some idea pure just as good as bottled at a price that's 10 times less pure water filters your water should be pure [Music] the pure water filter so easy to install and use anyone can do it pure water filters your water should be pure [Music] three minutes three seconds left for the washington state offense and notre dame finally wearing down the cougar defense notre dame through the first three quarters of the game rushed for a total of 21 yards in the fourth quarter grant and jones have rushed for 140 yards combined they're going to be a better running team having both of those guys to spot one another because as we talked about ryan grant had a great first eight games but got tired but now he's got julius jones to help him kicking to moore and smith another excellent set of kicks halfway through the end zone down there by moore they'll take over at the 20 and we invite you to join us in two weeks we'll be back here in south bend for the third game of the season for the finding irish as they take on the spartans of michigan state remember last season up at east lansing the irish just pulled out a last-second victory against the spartans with dillingham throwing i think duarte's battle the game-winner yeah that's right that's michigan state and notre dame presented by hall's fruit breezers two weeks saturday september 20th here on nbc michigan state has jeff smoker back at quarterback new head coach [Applause] kegel behind his intended receiver lundy and incomplete [Applause] scott bundy's made some good catches today but that was one that was almost impossible to catch here's a guy who's in his senior year actually his fifth year in this program but this is the the very first year that he's got his picture in the program believe it or not and he started last year seniors always get a full full-time page picture in the media guy for the cougars second and ten kegel with a little touch pass and it's complete to green jermaine green out of the backfield good end of the run there by green cross is the first down marker and keeps the chains moving for the cougars yeah he would have been stopped short of the first down but nice power run fourth quarter today for the irish 20 points the two touchdowns they played well on defense with the two force turnovers and they ran the ball all the things they did early in that first quarter first half they certainly turned around here in the fourth quarter i haven't seen too many more dramatic turnarounds than what the irish have done they were absolutely dismal on offense [Applause] pass to darling to the 40-yard line ball came loose i think it'll be a reception and down just sort of the 40-yard line where he was tackled by preston jackson time is really not a factor for the cougars 2 20 remaining the game they still have two timeouts remaining so they don't have to throw desperation passes or at all an extra point to tie two-point conversion perhaps for the win [Applause] heagle rushed hard batted incomplete daryl campbell knocked the ball down big number 60 for the irish 300 pounds of it and travis lightko number 97 in there as well but gary campbell what a year he had a year ago kent bear said to us yesterday when he's in the game we're just a lot better defensive team light goes number 97 coming off the corner but was campbell who tipped it with his left hand had six sacks a season ago we have a good defensive line and some depth this year third down and two four wide receivers two to either side kegel swing pass out of the back field of green green fighting his way toward the sideline and gets out of bounds picks up a first down preston jackson forced him out for the irish yes so uh green did two things well you see the last 11 possessions not much champion but jermaine greene did two things well there caught the ball for the first down then got out of bounds [Music] again the four receiver formation with one running back that's their first first down of the fourth quarter hand it to jermaine green lowers his head for a gain of nine tackled by curry jermaine green is a powerful guy but a year ago he had an 80-yard run against ucla and another 80 yard run against usc so he's capable of taking it a long way can't afford to tie your shoe right here no no no miscommunication kegel calling the play at the line of scrimmage but a lot of precious seconds kicking away that was too much time double pumps finds a man did he get a foot down he did remarkable catch there chris jordan yeah jordan got a foot down excellent catch by chris jordan the freshman from kent washington redshirt freshman coach is talking to us about the big upside that chris jordan has watch as he catches it and then just the presence of knowing exactly where he has to get that toe down for one foot the left foot came down yeah excellent so first down for the cougars from the 28-yard line of notre dame and timeout taken by the irish so notre dame calls timeout with a minute 14 on the clock notre dame having scored 26 straight points but washington state driving down the field here trying to get something before time runs out they have two timeouts left as do the irish you know and you wonder hey why would the irish call a timeout when you're trying to run the clock out i think it's a good call there if you're not certain of the defense you want to be in on their first three possessions washington state scored 12 points they've gone 11 possessions now with a goose egg nothing well they certainly have lots of time and with the two timeouts the opportunity you know i think it gets tougher and tougher to score as you get inside that 10 yard line and they've got uh as we've talked about davar darling who caught 11 touchdown passes a year ago you know sometime when you get out to that 25-yard line maybe you give him a chance throw the ball in the end zone let him use that athletic ability and of course you have the 6-8 cody boyd too sometimes up top but they've been going with a four wide receiver formation and no tight ends despite the fact the titans have been very productive for them today he catches by tight ends today kegel for the day 20 of 35 231 yards a touchdown and an interception he's found nine separate receivers and we found out this about the rso they are resilient they are tough and they are determined darling is in motion he goes stumbled and fell that might have been one of those cases where an offensive lineman stepped on his foot it happens all the time it's usually down by the goal line actually but usually one of the guards is going to use one of those timeouts a guard steps on your foot right guard riley uh fit chapel right watch the right guard step around his foot you know this happens to be a lot of way the fans think you're an idiot well it's been uh a tale of it is here's how the game started for a great throw there by matt keagle and then the defense just dominated and then the turnaround started with that play by vontes duck a touchdown bit by mcknight and then a brilliant run by julius jones to put the irish in the lead so for irish fans it was the worst of times and then the best of times thank you mr dickens and now they're trying to just hold on here for the final minute playing today without their all-american linebacker candidate courtney watson number 33 watching in street clothes today without mike goolsby as well their starting middle linebacker from a year ago rules b may end up missing the entire year watson is supposed to be back next week for michigan we're told and the freshman brady quinn number 10 didn't throw a pass but was on there for a touchdown drive for the irish first collegiate snap amazing coach has talked so much to us this week about brady flynn that you know very mature kids spent the summer here in south bend and they think he has a big big opportunity in the years ahead second down 16 for washington state a minute and a second remaining matt keagle good protection wins for the end zone that could be interference there was a bump there did he catch it anyway yes touchdown sammy moore there is a flag i think but he did catch it i think it's interference and a touchdown unbelievable sammy moore so athletic when the rose gold returns a kick for a touchdown he grabbed that with one hand i think 34 yards what a catch by moore despite being bumped by the defender at least that's what it appeared to appear to me that he's clearly the flag but he did absolutely catch it wow [Applause] with sammy moore the senior from mesa arizona and watch the focus and the concentration and then the athleticism he gets bumped there by 15 jackson and then he comes down the ball that's a great play now they missed an extra point earlier which looms large now this one's a and it doesn't look pretty again it sidewinds its way through it's good and drew dunning has tied it up with a point after what a fun game back and forth and back and forth this was a thing of beauty watch him up here had to adjust to the ball first then gets bumped and then the one-handed stab he kind of had an arm out himself you know that when he was bumped he he was kind of extending his arm interesting call i tell you though this is again a little kind of wobbler underthrown ball duck ball but just keeping it alive and then the concentration he kind of batted it to himself [Music] and it had been a tight spiral he probably wouldn't have been able to sort of deflect it to himself it would well if he could be going so hard you're right but it had been a little better thrown a little bit more to start with yeah it might have been an easier touchdown well washington state led 19 to nothing then notre dame scored 26 straight points and now washington state clutch with 53 seconds on the clock scores to tie the game now one thing notre dame may get a chance to have good field position because remember washington state has squibbed it every time which is work for them i think it's the right strategy but if one of those up guys can get this squib thing they may get the ball around the 40 45 yard line mcknight and jones are the heat back with another [Applause] it's been a flag fest this afternoon and it's against notre dame scott davis made the special teams tackle irish penalty looks like one of the dorm games with all the flags well they let them play that's true bad analogy i apologize [Music] it went from an ugly game to a rather interesting game over the face space of four hours or so by the receiving team during the run back 10 yards from spot of the foul first down quarter day almost four hours with the prospect of overtime looming i'm not sure what happened today in college football but i don't believe there's been an overtime game yet this season to my knowledge brady quinn the freshman quarterback thrown into the fire right away now carlisle holiday under center and the irish at their own 12-yard line got to be careful for a turnover here that could lose the game for you they're gonna throw it holiday across the middle complete for short games rima mcknight and will dirting on the tackle holiday calling the play at the line of scrimmage that one gained about five yards two timeouts remaining for the irish isaac brown came charging across the line of scrimmage but he might have been drawn he was pointing to jim offense right there nicholas will it come down to his toe no you know we said it at the very beginning of the show that sometime this year the way they play offense he's going to have a chance to win maybe a couple of ball games while the irish here letting the clock tick away down to 20 seconds they are deep in their own territory i think that's the right play to be perfectly honest get into overtime you've got a great kicker you may have to score a touchdown but you know you have a great kick [Music] holiday just takes a knee too dangerous so deep in your own territory where a turnover could cost you the game in regulation instead regroup for overtime [Music] absolutely last notre dame overtime game against air force in the year 2000 here at notre dame and the irish won it 34-31 and you know what i think wasn't it glenn earl who blocked a field goal in that game i think it was glen earl so here are the rules for overtime okay each team is given a series at the 25-yard line [Music] seriously and if you don't score make a first down and in that third overtime period if you score you must go for a two-point conversion so tied at 26 and heading to ot and you want to win the cost and toss and defer you want to know what you have to do the other team the team with the first possession scores the field goal at least you know touchdown wins a game of runs like a basketball game 19 straight points by the cougars 26th straight for the irish tying touchdown just before the end of [Music] regulations okay all right here we go notre dame wins the toss [Music] washington state gets to choose which end of the field they will attack from notre dame has won the toss and is elected to flight defense washington state is going to be on offense at the south end of the stadium that will be the sunlight end going toward their fans the cougars they'll have first possession in overtime when we return to notre dame stadium 26 apiece monday the most anticipated night of the summer is on nbc it all starts with hot fear in the summertime with fear factor i'm ready then the grand finale of for lover money too she really has to show me something tonight two men two hours two million at stake will they pick love or money she's a damn good actress in the biggest television event of the summer i'm falling in love with you the grand finale of her lover money too after fear factor nbc monday [Music] with new odor eaters plus motor eaters plus is the only insole that helps prevent tired achy feet as it fights foot odor and wetness look only readers plus gives podiatric arch support plus protection on demand against odor and wetness the more protection you need the more you get odor eaters plus arch support plus no odor [Music] look the diamond ring is the same the reaction's the same but the price it's not the same why pay more at the mall take the money you save and also buy her ballroom dancing lessons go in a safari or take a nice little vacation why pay my prices when you can save so much on quality diamonds and gold why pay full price when you can save so much at the source [Music] hey it's your turn i got the last round now that was the round before that [Music] next time it's your turn blue sky sunlight blue light kevin williams forecast weeknights at 11 on news 10 nbc stadium sold out the 168th consecutive time washington state scored 19 straight points notre dame came alive scored 26 in a row and then washington state scoring to put the game in overtime matt keagle a play-action fake in his past off-target and incomplete on first down intended for cody boyd his tight end defended by garen bible you've mentioned karen bible's coverage today he's done a great job and look at the sideline action from drew dunning who is the field goal kicker for the cougars two of two on today's attempts 20 to 29 yards but they're clearly they want touchdown they're faking touchdown right now and the guy you have to worry about for notre dame is this guy that is darwin washington state had gone 11 possessions without a score until they crossed the end zone with just a few seconds remaining the extra point tied it and we are in overtime not sure why they're delaying here now we're ready to go second down kegel swings a complete degree jermaine greene hit hard he is stopped at about the 17-yard line by glenn earl now that was a run to try to get him in the field goal position if nothing else i mean and he is such a hard runner jermaine powerful powerful guy gonna be third down and about two yards to go each team gets a possession in overtime here to begin this is a third down play here's that four wide receiver set jermaine green in the backfield i throw a lot of slants out of this set today hegel throws it across the middle it's broken up by glen earl [Applause] i think glendale the last overtime game against air force blocked the field goal and this overtime game did a great job in coverage there so earl with a heads-up play as lundy was the intended receiver he had gone on a hook route right here great reaction time and that's not enough [Applause] he's hit two for two this one will be from about 34 yards it's on its way and it is no good no good donny misses and now the irish will get a possession with a chance to win and with the field goal kicker nick setta who's four of five on the day dunning had missed the first extra point of the game or the overtime would have been moot and here given the field goal opportunity he's wide left have rushed it a little bit didn't look like that tom [Music] trying to draw the flag i think he knew he missed it right away [Music] all packed in last year 113 points for the cougars and just a pull [Music] now the situation a score by notre dame and they have the overtime victory they begin at the 25-yard line julius jones and rashawn powers kneel in the eye formation jones the tailback handed off to it hit behind the line of scrimmage falls forward a yard who has been a pillar of stone for the cougars today he has been rock solid from the opening kick to the overtime he's done everything wrong you know he is blitzed well he's called the defense well he's led his team well and he's tackled well he has played well enough to win it was set on number 13. that one miss from 47 yards it was a botched hole in from the eyes his way forward and staying in the center of the field bill turning again the tackle that's what roughly a 37-yard attempt now they want to give they want saved right in the center of the field for santa too you notice give him a head-on on third down there's a mix-up all they need is a field goal and nicola one for one in overtime field goals a 29 yarder and this will be from 40. 40 yard field attempt to win the game nicholas cena on its way it is [Applause] oh in overtime nicolasetta with a 40-yard field goal to win it for the irish who in the first half looked like they were going to be a run out of the stadium by the cougars let's go to lewis johnson all right tom thanks a lot well coach i think your quote is just win but let's talk about how you won today can you explain the transformation from the first three quarters of this game into what we saw the last quarter well probably you know and i'm not exactly sure but i think the biggest thing that will show up probably the absence of uh numerous mistakes we probably still had some it was not the game that we thought we played or wanted to play but the one thing that holds true notre dame is notre dame they play hard to the end and our guys did that and were able to come and prevail against a good football team let's fast forward to overtime as we still hear the cheers from this crowd tell me about your philosophy and going into overtime choosing defense and then trusting the leg of nick setter well we want you always want to know what you have to do and we're not afraid of that situation our defense is not afraid of it as a matter of fact we went through the identical situation a week ago i think it was the exact same scenario and i think nick did the same thing if i'm correct so we are we're lucky we're fortunate we played a great team and our guys stayed to the task and we won one last question as you get ready to head to the big house next week you have michigan what are the top two or three things you will address with your offense with holiday maybe with the defense what will you be talking about there well it won't be two or three they're too numerous to name right now well in that note why don't you just go and enjoy congratulations coach thank you [Music] [Applause] all right louis ty willingham with a victory and you have to feel for bill doba the south bend native who on the day before his birthday brought his cougars in here and gave the irish all they wanted a clutch touchdown to put it into overtime then a missed field goal gave seta his chance nicholas setta tied his career high with five field goals today including the overtime game winner and tom a great opening win for the irish starting this season much like the start of last season you look like there's no way they're going to win they create some turnovers defense steps up opportunistic offense and a great win for the irish on opening day dramatic and unlikely victory for the irish on opening day of the 2003 season here was the game-winner nicholas set 40 yards away kind of put a little curve into it right there as it comes past the upright and through as the irish win 29-26 over the cougars of washington state one time washington state had built a 19-point lead notre dame was 26 in a row a long drive by washington state to put it into overtime and then the set a field goal the game winner for the irish would go 1-0 as they head to the big house to play michigan next week and bill doba who returns to the place where he was born only about 8 or 10 miles away from notre dame stadium so close but leaves with a loss and ty willingham the magic of last season somehow remains for willingham and the irish an unlikely victory today in come from behind fashion for the notre dame fighting irish who win their game opener in overtime and back to the hero of the moment nicholas setta he's with blewett i just had to tell nick setterton that he could smile because this game is actually over nick we talked earlier in the game before the game started about this opportunity to do double duty place kick and punt tell me about your opportunity today and how you took advantage of it at the end of the game um just you know whenever my team gave me the opportunity i just took advantage of it they did a lot of great things they put us in position to win and just tried to help the best i could you tell me what you were thinking when you saw coach willingham send the punt team out with on third down and you knew it was up to you what are you thinking then just go through it i mean it's like anything else and coach got the confidence and i've got the confidence so it was a matter of just putting through and the holder and the snapper in the line gave me all the time in the world so just the job to get easiest part of it was kicking it all right nick congratulations on a magical moment here notre dame state i appreciate it all right tom all right louis nicholas setta who was an all-around athlete in his high school in lockport illinois and comes through in the clutch for ty willingham and the fighting irish in their home opener against washington state 29-26 in overtime don't forget notre dame football returns to nbc two weeks saturday september 20th as the irish host michigan state coming up tonight beginning at 8 7 central on nbc the nbc special the most outrageous game show moments followed by a race to the altar and law and order so for pat hayden and lewis johnson this is tom hammond saying so long from notre dame stadium you've been watching notre dame football on nbc usa versus the world featuring nine of the top ten players on the planet woods nicholson love and more versus elves sing we're and the world in one of golf's great events the president's cup coming in november to nbc monday the most anticipated night of the summer is on nbc it all starts with hot fear in the
