hey friends Graham here from the Recording Revolution comm and today I want to share with you the two secrets to getting ahead in the music industry [Music] now Before we jump into these secrets let me quickly just say these two things will apply to not just the music industry they will apply to absolutely any industry you are actually trying to get ahead in I'm assuming you love music whether you're an engineer or artist or musician because you're watching this video so I'm going to apply it to the music industry because that's the space that we are both in but this applies in general in life because it has nothing to do with hacks or fancy tricks has to do with human nature so let's talk about why does some people get ahead in the industry and others don't and let's ignore the things that really are outside of our control things like when you were born things like where you live things like who's coming knocking on your door there's a lot of things opportunities that you cannot manufacture don't let someone tell you that you can actually manufacture all your opportunities because that's just not true that's a very arrogant way to look at the world as if you somehow can control all aspects of your life you can't I can't there are many things we can control I'm going to talk about the two most important ones today and the absolutely work and they're a formula that works over a lifetime of application let's talk about them very simply and I'll give you some application in my life as well secret number one is you have to be seen if you are a band or a musician or an artist that you want to break into the music industry have lots of people hearing music no one's going to hear your music if they don't know who you are very obvious right so you cannot hear me now you cannot sit at home and make your music which is possible make it sound great and then just keep it there at home okay you can watch this channel you can learn how to record Mix Master self-produce your stuff and it sounds phenomenal but if you want to make a career out of being an artist or musician then you cannot stop there you have to be seen your music has to be seen you have to be seen forget the music for a second though because you altima tar the ambassador for your music and if people get to know you and like you they will then listen to your music so you need to be seen what does that look like that could mean getting involved in your music community locally a lot of my students do that they just find out where bands are playing they get to know all the other bands that gets into all the clubs it gets and all the venues it gets into all the restaurants they get to know city council they get to know all the people that would know anything about music in the city and they become friends with them or they just go to events it's all about just existing around other people so they know that you exist and things can happen if you are seen the same is true as an engineer all the greats that I know of they started to get involved in the music industry by moving moving to LA moving to New York moving to Nashville so they could be seen by other engineers and get in the mix no pun intended even if you can't move to those places you need to do things and attend events and get to know people online it can be physical or online to be seen so that you can break into the music industry they will not come find you as basically what I'm saying and this is totally applied to me in my space I'm going to give you that application in a minute so the number one secret is you have to be seen I'll come back to that in a minute number two secret is you have to focus on serving others and not yourself this is absolutely critical anytime you have an opportunity to interact with someone in the music business whether it's an engineer whether it's a producer whether it's a broadcaster whether it's a news outlet whether it's a manufacturer of gear that you use whether it's an A&R rep whether it's just a listener or fan you have to remember in that moment in that interaction and in general the secret is find a way to serve them and don't worry about yourself don't worry about what you need don't worry about passing your CD out or hoping you get a break just when you meet somebody and you're getting to know them find out what do they need how can you achieve their goals and their dreams even if it's a small little thing like we're going to do for you today or a long-term thing hey what can I help you with over the next 12 months can you help them and you serve them because people like people like that people are drawn to generous people if you are a servant to others if that's your default if people meet you know like this person just always wants to help me that is attractive that is magnetic and the music industry is built around people who know people who like people people get gigs because they're like oh I have a guy and I know him he's amazing basically I really like it you have to have a level of talent for sure I'm going to assume that you're working your butt off to to master your craft to get good at this thing to display your work in the best way possible but talent won't cut it you have to be talented and then you have to be a servant of human beings because if you're cool and you love people well serve people well always want to help them they're going to want to bring you in on something rather than someone else who's just a talented but isn't magnetic like you are very very important always find a way to serve someone because people are drawn to that and you will get opportunities now let me pull those two secrets together in a practical way for me in my my experience with my business and with my growth through the audio industry the music industry and a bunch of things I saw this week and so I was just at the NAMM show in Anaheim and it's just filled with people you got gear manufacturers you've got the best producers in the world you've got artists you've got bands you've got media press everybody's there that's involved with music and I go to name not to look at gear I can work your gear on the Internet or I'm in catalog I go to NAMM to be seen and to serve people these two secrets when I first started mixing bands and I was doing the recording revolution I had a bunch of indie bands that I was working on and nobody knew about my blog but the blog was drawing the YouTube channel was growing but I started to go to the NAMM show this was probably six years ago went to the NAMM show for the first time flew all the way across the country spent my time money to get hotel plane ticket run a rental car food to walk around the NAMM show and just meet people now I am NOT extroverted by nature I'm introverted meaning I'd rather just stay at home and work on music or hang out my kid to my wife or my friends it takes a lot more energy for me to go out to a place where there's 100 200 thousand people and extrovert and meet people but I did it and I would walk around go to brands that I knew I'm okay I use your products I love your guys stuff is there anything I can do for you but who are you again I'm Graham from the Recording Revolution oh I think I've heard of your website now they have a face another connection they saw me but I'm asking what can I do for you or are you doing anything cool this year can can we give away some of your gear to my to my audience these are brands that I love and trust can I serve you I was going up to engineers and producers some of the top top guys that I love guys that are making the Grammy Award winning records and going up to them saying hey I love your work on this record ask them a question how did you do this hey is there anything I can do for you now there's nothing I can do for these guys they are here and I am here especially six years ago and yet I would approach them and say is there anything I can do for you and most of the time they probably laughing soon I don't think so some of them though they wanted to get their brand out to more people so they wanted to be interviewed by me or they say well hey maybe we can do something together on your YouTube channel they just they want to help and they just thought it was cool then so I offered and so you never know what kind of connections will happen if you don't go so my point being is every year I go I have to be seen and to serve people and I continue to do this to this day I was just there this weekend meeting people encouraging people what can I do for you what do you need how can I help you I have been brought into so many cool things that I don't really deserve to be brought into I haven't given opportunities that I wouldn't normally have been given had I not been known seen and liked by people because I try to serve them as opposed to take from them am i perfect at this no but it's really a way of life for me because I see it working in all aspects of life and it definitely works in the audio industry in the music industry and being at NAMM again this year I'm reminded of this because everyone I meet they all would get brought into things because there's they're together it's like hey I'd never met you but you seem cool here's my car we should do something together sometime why did that person get an opportunity because they were there being seen in that moment humans like humans that they know and trust and have something with and they seemed like a cool person and if you're not being seen by them they're never going to know you'd get a chance to like you or trust you and if you're always taking and always worried about moving your career forward as opposed to thinking about somebody else for once you won't be very likable but I was seeing so many deals and opportunities being connected in front of me that weren't even related to me from my friends from other people because I'm seeing people interact and serving one another and the people that have the coolest attitudes that are so humble and so about other people those are the people getting connected and hooked up and I saw a bunch of that happen this weekend and then here's what I want you to take away from this is and this is very off tips technical stuff this is so important because I want you to not just get great recordings I want you to do well in your career don't you do well in this hobby don't you do well in life and if you can understand that if you want to see success and get noticed and progress in the music industry that it's not going to be just about who you know it's not going to be just about where you live it's going to be all about are you being seen physically or online create an online presence go to physical events get to know people be are you being seen and are you serving other people when you have a chance to be in front of someone who is steps and miles ahead of you and where you want to be in your career don't try to take from them don't just say will you help me will you help me will you help me don't do that these people get bugged all the time by someone you just like can you give me a break we listen to my demo don't do that you will just disappear into the sea in the crowd of everybody else's doing that these people are tired of it what if instead you meet this person whose steps ahead of you you were to say hey I love what you do especially that one thing you did on this one track or this one song or whatever compliment them and then say this is who I am but is there anything I can do for you I was thinking about whatever whatever I noticed you wanted to break more into this genre or into teaching or into this I kind of know a guy that might be able to help you there's any way I can help you in this area just let me know it would be my honor they may not need your help it may not be relevant right now but they will immediately think you're a much cooler person because you offered to help them as opposed to offer to take from them and three months down the road six months down the road - three years down the road sings Mike pop and I know this for a fact because this is the story of my career I had tried to serve people offer help and some things popped right away and some things took three four or five years to develop but they always remembered hey that grand guy was very cool always wanted to help me and when something happened there was an opportunity that was just right they pulled me in on it and I got an opportunity I wouldn't have otherwise so to review my friends the two secrets to getting ahead in music industry number one be seen no one's going to come beating down your door you got to get out there and the people that get out there will be rewarded and number two serve people make it your business to serve everyone you come in contact with as opposed to being trying to be served so because I'm helping to them get what they want and they need don't worry about yourself good things will come to those who focus on others because those people are magnetic they're attractive they're likable and if you're likable you'll get brought in to stuff and that's that's the way the music industry works that's the way all industries work because we're humans and we like to do business with those we know like and trust it's that simple so real quick two things I want you to do one subscribe to these videos if you haven't already so you know when the next one's coming out and number two leave a comment below and tell me this what is one thing you're going to do this week to be seen more than you were last week what is one thing you're going to do this week to be seen more than you were last week that could be online or being taking steps to doing something in person even if it's booking a trip or putting something your calendar to meet up with some people or attend an event what is one thing you're going to do this week to be seen and number two write down what is one thing you can do or one person you can think of that you can focus on serving this week you can do something for this week leave that comment below you can have changed names or avoid names if you want to but I want to know are you going to do something to be seen this week and are you going to serve somebody this week we become below this video that's it for today my friend have a great day see y'all next video soon
