hey everybody this is Tyler from canine connection dog training and this is a clip from Cody and diesel two pit bulls who live together who came into our boot camp program and the level of just complete disobedience and out-of-control behavior was almost comical as you can see in these early clips I had to get some footage of this stuff I'm actually laughing while I'm holding these guys I just could not believe how incredibly control these two dogs were you can imagine how frustrating it is to live with dogs that are this out of control they're not aggressive in any way they're not mean they're just wild and the poor woman who owns these two dogs actually runs a daycare out of her house so she really can't even have the dogs around while she's with them during the day because of this wild behavior and they could just accidentally knock a child over and herd them not to mention the potential damage they're doing to their own necks pulling this hard so they're not getting walked right now obviously because of this behavior and we've got them for a week to make some really dramatic sort of headstart improvement before they go back to their owners and we start to work with their owners on how to continue that progress and continue a life of success with these this is the very first training session with Cody who is the more powerful of the two dogs and basically all I'm doing right now is getting him used to the way I use a leash and also getting him used to the sensation of a training collar we have been fitted with a prong collar it's just gone on him for the first time and I want him to learn that basically in my system the leash is not used to restrain the dog and it's not used to force the dog it's simply used to communicate and encourage the dog so what we're teaching him right now is that any tension on that leash is my way of telling him that I need him to do something or I'm asking him to do something and the release of tension on the leash is my way of telling him that he's making a good effort and he's doing a good job so ultimately I want him to learn that he's the one who can make choices about whether or not he feels any pressure on that leash and collar at all and you're going to see here in a moment that all this chaotic movement in the beginning starts to look very orderly so here he is after only about four minutes of my system he's paying very close attention to me now and this really was just a process of the movements that you saw a second ago and just slowly reining him in and teaching him that he can avoid any tension on that leash by just being aware of me you can see how sensitive he's getting to that leash pressure now I just stopped him with a very slight amount of tension on the line you can see his whole demeanor now calming right down so here he is again doing very good and now I add in a little slight bit of upward tension which is working on the sit behavior which we teach as an automatic sit as part of our leash walking so at this point we're about ten minutes into training and he's already learned to walk politely on leash and he's already learning to sit automatically when I stop and we've done it all with very very light gentle amounts of tension on the leash just teaching him a basic basic system which is the cornerstone of my conversational leash work program and this is going to be pretty much the end of his first session again this is about ten or twelve minutes of work here and you're going to see I'm going to release him right now and just look how much different his demeanor is after just learning to focus and sort of calm himself down or soothe himself with a gentle training system his whole body language has changed and his whole energy has changed because of that his brother diesel proved to be a quicker study and in fact as soon as I put a properly fitted prong collar on him he was walking right at my side so I decided to move directly into teaching him the place command as that would be the best way for him to still learn about my leash world program and still learn about how I use the leash to help communicate what you can see here is that he's actually a little bit nervous about stepping on the board he's never stood on anything like that before so I'm putting a very very slight amount of pressure on the leash in the direction that I want him to move I'm holding my hand this way very intentionally as you can see that I'm only putting fingertip amounts of pressure so I'm allowing him to sort of move back and forth there but always maintaining just a little bit of tension on the leash and what I'm waiting for is any subtle sign that he's shifting into a more cooperative state of mind and it's about to happen right there so notice I take all the tension off the leash and he actually completes exactly what I wanted to do on his own he just put his feet on the board stepped over it and moved onward I'm not requiring him to stop there at this point so by just being patient and releasing pressure at the right time he actually did the action on his own rather than being forced and now he's going to pretty much do it with almost no prompting with the leash because he saw that I was very very patient with him that was perfect from there he picked up on what I was asking him to do very quickly so at this point we've got him going to the board stopping on the board he's sitting on his own I don't require that and I'm just adding some food reward in to balance out the training for him so he's getting the contrast of what I do like and what I don't like and making training a little bit more enjoyable for him so here I stopped him from walking away guide him back and then once he's stable we're going to reward him again and we just repeat that process over and over and over again and it makes a very clear picture in his head of exactly what we expect from him and by the end of the day this dog will be able to stay stationary in a specific spot for probably up to ten or fifteen minutes at a time you so it's been one week of training and today we're getting Cody and diesel ready to go back to their owners you can see we've created very different behaving dogs from the beginning video that we had here this is me coming out of the exact same door after green them other kennels and they're nice and calm they're able to sit politely allow me to bring them out walk side by side and stay nice and relaxed so I'm just going to be running them through a little bit of their obedience together to get them ready for the meeting I have with their parents later in the day to start showing they're their parents and their owners how to continue on with the training that we've begun to put in place diesel down you so nice relaxed leash when you get like five or ten feet away from his brother I want you to stop put a slight upward pressure on the line hold the pressure up until these foot drops down now relax good good good now diesel again so now your job with Cody is just to keep his butt to the ground and always return to a nice loose leash position every time good relax leash perfect stop there sits beautiful now notice he started sitting before you even added any tension to the leash and that's we want so your action of stopping your motion is actually the cue to sit so eventually you won't have to do anything with the leash it becomes automatic and that's what we want to happen now I'm going to challenge you you haven't really done this yet but I want you to just walk up to the board and when you're about two feet away just tell him place and guide him if you need to good and then once you see that he's settled in that he's not going anywhere you can drop that leash and walk away so now return to him grab his leash tell him he'll walk him back towards to his brother and then have him sit again buta form how's that feel good so stop and sit him beautiful good yeah um just tell us what life was like with these guys like literally a week ago basically there's a lot of yelling at all they wouldn't stay we couldn't walk them on a leash they just they used to drink dragged us down the sidewalk the reason we came was because they got to the point where it wasn't even a pleasure hand on us anymore yeah and you run your business out of your house you have a daycare out of your house so that's got to be really tough cool and so they've been here for a week today's your first time seeing their their training so what do you think so far I would say so you'd say yeah so so basically this behavior right now realistically can change your life I mean dramatic improvement on your life
