2 John [Daily Bible Study]

as it is written in Isaiah the front look I am sending my messenger ahead of you [Applause] welcome to branch together my name is Jared and today we're tackling second John we're moving towards the end of the year and we have a few short letters second and third john and then jenna is going to help us tackle the monster that is the book of Revelation second John and third John are short letters but they encourage us to put our focus on some major things so as we read let these two little tiny letters help us stay focused on some of the big aspects of the faith as we finish up 2018 and move towards 2019 before we read we'll take a moment and pray father we thank you for this day thank you for your serving John we thank you for his focus on truth and love help us dwell on these things wherever we are at in faith wherever we're going through among family friends enemies co-workers wherever we are in life to focus and to learn and to understand what is true about you and this world can only be helpful and good and for us to learn how to love one another better to love you better to love those around us better that can only be good so today and tomorrow help us dwell on truth and love and then for the rest of our lives help us dwell on truth in love in your name we pray amen the elder to the elect lady and her children whom I love in the truth and not only i but also all who know the truth because of the truth that remains in us and will be with us forever grace mercy and peace will be with us from God the Father and from Jesus Christ the Son of the Father in truth and love I was very glad to find some of your children walking in truth in keeping with a command we have received from the father so now I ask you dear lady not as if I were writing you a new command but one we have heard from the beginning that we love one another this is love that we walk according to his commands this is the command as you have heard it from the beginning that you walk in love many deceivers have gone out into the world they do not confess the coming of Jesus Christ in the flesh this is the deceiver and the Antichrist watch yourself so that you don't lose what we have worked for but that you may receive a full reward anyone who does not remain in Christ's teaching but goes beyond it does not have God the one who remains that teaching this one has both the father and the son if anyone comes to you and does not bring this teaching do not receive him into your home and don't greet him for the one who greets him shares in his evil works though I have many things to write to you I don't want to use paper and ink instead I hope to come to you and talk face-to-face so that our joy may be complete the children of your elect sister send you greetings so John begins this letter reminding the church that this is all about truth and love John loves his church he believes the church has come to know the truth about Jesus and his hope is that the church lives in that truth and love in the meat of this letter he hammers home truth and love he's glad to find some people walking in the truth now we hear this word truth over and over again what is the truth that John is getting it today we live in a world that has many small lowercase T truths one of the mistakes I believe of our age is believing that truth is compiling a bunch of facts that we feel like like isolated facts are in truth in our life and there's important things there but isolated facts are never the whole truth there is a bigger truth that exists that is bigger than just facts on paper and John believes that the church must know that that the church must know a truth so big that they live their whole life in it so what is that big truth the big truth that John calls people to walk in and Christians are called to walk in is to love one another and to walk according to Jesus's commandments if you ask John he'd say that's like the true way to live so we're not talking about this thing's true this facts true two plus two is four but no when John talks about the truth he's saying this is the true path the true walk the true way to live to love one another as Christ has loved us and to live according to his commandments his teaching his way of life that he models for us this is why we do bTW why we spent three months in the Gospels to help all of us understand Jesus's Commandments his teaching his example in how he lived and healed and loved and served all of that is so that we if you're especially if you're Christian but you probably are if you're made it all the way to second John with us today so that we can walk in his love because that is the big truth we are meant to live in John and Jesus believe we must walk in this love that is our way of life John who was with Jesus he is the one who tells us that God is love if you want to know God do you want to understand the universe so I don't know why all of this matters and it all matters then you find the truth by walking in love as Christ has walked in love and how he commands us to walk in love so here's a question I'm gonna leave us and this is something you can be thinking about and dwelling on for December how are you going to walk in love this month what is one thing you can do this year to grow in this love for others perhaps those in your church family or those in your neighborhood or your biological family think about one step you can take this holiday season one step you can take to walk in more christ-like love and then as you try that this December be thinking about how you can walk
