hey what's up y'all this is William the permaculture consultant and today I'm going to be doing my third flip on this compost pile now included in this video is going to be all of the consecutive flips until we hit the eighth Flip or the 18th day now if you haven't seen the first two flips go ahead and go back and check out those videos um and if you have no idea what I'm talking about then go ahead and check out the two ingredient compost pile uh on how to assemble that and then the first two flips and then follow this video along but today is going to be the third flip is going to be different than the first two flips and I'll show you guys that in a second all righty first things first as usual I need to take the tarp off going and get my rocks off and I need to remind you uh or I need to remember to bring this up over and over again especially based off the comments that I had last time make sure you're weary of what's underneath the tarp uh whenever you remove the tarp it could be snakes could be mice could be rats could be a combination of everything so unlike like the first couple piles what I'm going to do is take everything around the outside of this pile first and I'm going to put it down and that is going to be the new center of this pile and everything that was on the inside of this pile is now going to be on the outside so instead of taking the three different sections splitting them up and doing all that what I'm doing this time is just putting the outside towards the inside and the inside on the outside and I'm going to follow this same exact process for the rest of the flips and I'm I'm also keeping an eye on the moisture I know the moisture on the outside of the pile is going to be a little bit drier than the inside of the pile now based on that sound it may have dried out a little bit more than I anticipated but we will see for sure once we get to the inside of the pile because whenever the inside of the pile is on the outside and is on top of this dry stuff it's naturally going to transfer some of the water so I'm not too concerned about it just just yet and if I need to add water don't worry it's not the end of the deal um it's really not don't stress about it don't worry about it like I said before in previous videos the worst case scenario with this compost pile is that it just takes a little bit longer it's not like you're going to permanently ruin it or anything like that and also don't forget to fluff it up very very well as you flip it if you want to work yourself in circles that's perfectly fine as well so that way you're evenly taken from all sides of the side of this pile that's perfectly fine too so far I'm not really seeing any big clumps it seems to be pretty uh nice and fluffy on the inside which is a good thing I am going to be adding a little bit more water though so I'm just going to use like the same pond water I used before um using the bucket with a bunch of holes in the bottom of it and I'm going to use maybe about 5 gallons here on the the bottom of this pile just make sure I get everything nice and wet again we also do have high winds out here where we are in Texas all the predominant wind is coming from over there off that cow pasture on that other side which has basically no trees for quite a while so that wind can just bend build up momentum and hit the property all righty so this is the fourth flip this will be the fourth flip and it's going to rain tomorrow um so I need to keep that in mind whenever I'm preparing this like hey if I need to add any water maybe don't because it is about to rain tomorrow also make sure it's nice and covered up like it is right now and I'm going to flip this pile same exact way I flipped number three outside to the inside and then this old inside to the outside of the pile and this is uh the fourth flip out a to out of a total of uh eight flips should start seeing some changes here pretty soon in this compost pile all righty now just just cover it up wait a day flip it on the second day and this is the end of flip number four and we also might have some more water mitigation issues on the next flip because we are supposed to get some torrential downpours and remember y'all this is the basic recipe for compost this isn't necessarily the the best recipe for compost but this is a very very very good start and this is going to be better than anything you can buy so is it the absolute perfect compost no is it a very very good start yes all righty so we just had a tental downpour last night and uh this is flip number five so um we're just going to do the same thing we did last couple flips and that's uh Outside Inside and then the inside becomes the outside [Applause] [Applause] all right so this is flip number six I believe and uh full honesty I might have to restart this pile because the past couple days we've been getting like some pretty heavy downpours and like tornado wases and warnings and all that type of stuff stuff uh and the tar blew off of it so I know it pretty much got completely saturated so um which is a bummer because it's going to set back the compost but it's also kind of a benefit because I can show you how to remediate it it's not all a complete loss so uh if this happens to you don't get discouraged it's just going to take a little bit longer but let me check this out see if we actually do need to um Kickstart this or if it's going to be good to go to continue Contin on doing what we've been doing all right so the first thing I'm going to do is grab handful of it and squeeze it and just see how well that is pretty saturated okay all right so the next thing I'm going to do is actually break this open and see if there's any heat in this at all um if there is then depending on how much we'll continue if there isn't then I'll show you how to fix it now this isn't necessarily flipping properly I'm just trying get to the center of this pretty quickly there's a little bit of heat but honestly not much and it's pretty saturated so since this pile is so saturated it's gone completely cold and um Anor robic so it's not really the the bacteria in here isn't really working that hard so what we're going to do is introduce stuff that's going to increase the um microbial life in this pile and Heat this pile back up now it is a little frustrating uh especially cuz it kind of messes up the whole sequence of this playlist here but it's also a good uh valuable lesson to learn on like how to fix your compost if stuff like this happens um so I guess right off the bat one quick solution is build a permanent indoor composting facility but until then uh we're going to make this work and also we need to I'm not going to add any more water because it is so saturated so through this whole process I'm using pretty fresh ingredients um and I'm not going to add any more water cuz like I said just said it's saturated so let's go ahead and get to it this stuff over here is mostly Clover and grass so this is also going to be high in nitrogen so I'm going to add it to the compost pile so I'm just going to bring it right on over here as I'm clearing the exact area where I'm going to be basically flipping it so it's like a two for one deal right here now I'm just going to basically rebuild my pile I'm going to start with a carbon base and I'm going to shake it out very very well as I do this one thing that's really really going to help this pile is reintroducing some air back into this pile because right now there's too much water and not enough air so shaking this out is going to be one of the biggest benefits to this cold pile now and I'm not going to be adding any more carbon to this pile I'm only going to be adding High nitrogen sources um cuz that's what's going to help speed the temperature back up and pick that back up to where we need it to be to compost properly and quickly in the center of this I'm going to be adding this fresh nice green nitrogen this Clover is amazing uh source of nitrogen and I'm going to try to add all of this to the core of the pile so basically I'm going to have like a green high nitrogen core which is basically just fresh green grass Clover comfy leaves if you have it um anything like that fresh green New Growth is going to go in the center and I'm going to build up like a carbon wall around the outside now I've got I built up this green core right here I'm going to build up the around the outside a little bit with that carbon just to make sure we're still keeping that core thing going and now the last thing we're going to do to really set this thing off is pour some uh nice urine right into the center of this pile now I'm not going to leave this uh I'm not going to cover this up we don't have any sunny days here in the forecast um it's going to all be overcast so I'm going to leave this completely uncovered until the next flip and we're going to keep the same schedule just because this happened doesn't mean we're going to restart anything it might take a little bit longer but we're still going to keep the same schedule as far as flips goes and uh you guys will see this whenever I you know do the last flip on this or the eighth flip on this pile um and then we'll revisit and see how it's doing at that point and see if we need to go any further but uh yeah stick around for the seventh flip and then we'll see if these methods actually got this up to temperature all righty this is going to be flip number 7 now since doing that addition in flip number six um it is downpour completely downpour as you can see all this water uh since then so we might be stuck with this type of pile for right now we're going to see on this flip um either way we're going to finish out the flips and then I'll you'll obviously see this video now let's go ahead and crack into it and see what we've got and we've got atino bacteria right here on the top not much of it but a little bit so that's something but it is you know vastly different than the beginning product so we're going to go ahead and continue on with this guy now I will say it is kind of dry around the outside which is pretty normal to have the outer layer go kind of dry because the outer layer is about to become the inner layer and make that transaction of moisture so don't worry about your outer layer going just a little bit dry all right so this pile is flipped we have one more flip and just to save you the suspense this is not going to be the finished compost you're thinking but it is still going to be very very useful compost and uh after this whole series I'll show you guys exactly how I'm going to still use this compost just as effectively as I would have a more refined finish pile of compost so stay tuned all is not lost and this is going to be highly beneficial to a lot of people who have made compost before but it's failed um or what they thought was failed or it didn't get as refined as they thought it was going to be it's going to be very very helpful for you guys to see this because the most beneficial part of this compost isn't actually using it as a planting medium that's the least efficient way to use your compost I'll show you way way way more efficient ways in future video so just stay tuned finish this uh little Series right here and we'll go into more detail about it all righty this is the last and final flip on this compost pile and I can already tell you it's not going to be nearly as broken down as most people are expecting like the fine crumb structure we're not going to get great crumb structure from this compost pile but what we are going to get are a ton of microbes especially if we follow the next steps um which is the most important part of the compost that's really the only part of the compost that means anything in fact we're going to be extracting those microorganisms from the compost and applying it to our garden beds in future videos oh and also it's been raining it was raining minutes before I even pulled up um so there's probably a little bit too much water in this compost pile again I got a new tar because this thing got beat up during this whole process cheap blue tarps um so we're going to go ahead and start flipping this and this is our very very last flip um and I will be making a new compost pile here soon and then really getting on the the compost cycle because um right now I don't have any animals or ruminants to to graze any of this so I'm going to be siing it down and turning it into compost and making the pastures better which I'll show you guys like I said earlier applications on how to do that and my Garden's better so let me quit yapping let's go ahead and start uh flipping this compost so let's start cracking into this we might have yeah it's pretty wet it's it's pretty wet at the top which means it's going to be absolutely saturated near the Bottom now it is still pretty dog on hot um I flipped it that way but I'm actually going to flip it the opposite direction for future compost Reasons I'm going to create them where the camera's standing create the new compost and flip them that way um as I go so I'm actually going to flip it over here shake it out and this is going to be the most important one as far as the final structure because at this point it's going to sit here and rest until this compost comes down to ambient temperature once it comes down to ambient temperature then I know that I have both bacteria and fungi growing within this compost pile Fung don't do too well in really hot conditions the spores survive but the filament is Fung they don't grow in hot conditions so we're going to let those spores hatch start growing and then we're going to start knocking off those soil microbes and applying them to the Garden but first before we do any of that we got to flip it here and uh we're going to let it come down to ambient temperature which depending on how much food is in here or I say food food for the microbes um depending on how much of that is actually in here is going to determine how long it's going to take to for it to come down to ambient temperature and since I added a bunch of greens uh not too long ago it's going to take a little bit longer to come down to ambient temperature for example I could probably make a new compost pile not have any of the rain storm issues um and have that come back down to ambient temperature before this one is probably down to ambient temperature which isn't going to be an issue because I'm going to be making a ton of compost consistently I have plenty of those leaves over there I have plenty of green material and I have plenty of space in land that needs proper soil life so it's going to be a which this should be something that every Homestead or Farm should do should be constantly thinking of how what are ways I can make compost this isn't the only way to make compost this is just a good way to get you started on making compost pretty dog on quickly um a lot of the cold methods are going to take about nine months to a year this one takes considerably less even with the having to wait even with all the issues and having to wait for the ambient temperature to come down um now you can use this directly if you wanted to the downside is that it's going to be super high in bacteria and very very low on fungi um so keep that in mind depending on the application it could be a good thing or a bad thing like if you're putting putting this around your trees or using it to plant trees then you want that fungi to come in if you're planting it in your or if you're using it in your brasa's uh raised bed like your broccoli cauliflower stuff like that then you could probably use it right away I would still let it cool down just a little bit um but brascas prefer a higher bacteria ratio than trees do so keep that in mind I know that was a lot of information all at once and this is a pretty long video at this point but it's kind of the backbone to everything we're doing here all righty so now we're going to just let this sit under a tarp I'm going to water it occasionally if it's been extra sunny out stuff like that um but overall thoughts on this compost pile if we were indoors or in a cover area then obviously there would have been no issues with this compost pile it did get set back a few times because of the amount of water that was introduced to it it went anerobic and the really high temperatures kind of went away um which is fine because it well it happened a couple times and then we added some more green material to this compost pile the green material aired a little bit um brought in some more like gaps of air in between the compost pile um and also reintroduced some food for the microbes that are going crazy in here and creating the heat the heat remember kills the weed seeds and also kills the pathogens the pathogens cannot survive these high temperatures the good bacteria and the fungi spores can so that's the importance of going through the thermophilic process all three sections of this compost have gone through that now all we have to do is wait once we it cools down then the funy will start growing and then we can apply that directly to the garden beds um these garden beds I ideally would be at a ratio of 1 to one so one bacteria per for one uh fungi that would be ideal for these maybe even slightly higher on the fungi uh ratio so maybe 1 to 1.25 um so that's the that's what we're trying to get these guys to this compost well I'll get it to into that in future videos but I'll do future videos on the importance of compost um how to use your compost efficiently after you've made it because this did take quite a bit of work and then also I'll do a compost Q&A here coming up soon so don't worry um if you're having issues with your compost pile if you have questions or something's not going right we'll have time to address those directly hopefully this video and this series was helpful to you guys um like I said it looks not necessarily like the best compost but it's not it's far better than anything you can buy at the store so hopefully this was helpful to you guys until next time thank you guys so much for watching we'll see you
