four games reggie barlow back to receive averaging 24.7 a game on kickoff for that that's what he's looking at tim right there that fall goes up in the air where they're standing right now receiving team jacksonville jaguars that's what they're looking at when that ball goes up here that's son jason hanson will kick it off and he gets a line shot a bouncing ball grabbed at the 11-yard line by barlow is hit like a 27-yard line let me tell you something that was your courtesy kick that kicked that thing low he never had to look up into the circle 18-yard return and offensively for the jaguars mark brunell 20-6 record at home his team unbeaten this season 5-0 ben coleman in the spot normally held by tony boselli out with an ankle injury fred taylor and damon shelton in the backfield smith and mccardell two outstanding wide receivers pete mitchell having a good year at tight end 19 for 35 last week 244 yards and the victory over cincinnati for mark grennell fred taylor who left that game with a shoulder injury late in the first quarter back in action today on the first down play defensively for the detroit lions kerwin waldrop luther ellis darius holland for the injured dan owens and the good soccer robert forshay aldridge stephen boyd rob frederickson the linebackers and greg jeffries in the spot normally held down by mark carrier he's out with a foot injury terry fair westbrook on the corners ron rice the other safety second and eight jaguars deep sideline that'll be well out of bounds there was pressure on brunel on his first pass he is slow to get up two lions were in there free i i don't know if he's a busy getting up he's complete mark burnell injured on his first pass attempt and holding jamie martin number 10 gets up quickly to warm up the five-year man from weber state and what a development this could be remember that he already has a knee injury that was bothered that he came off of and then was bothered by a groin earlier this season and that is robert porche got the look on him yeah and his foot got caught underneath and and you can see that as his cliques were planted and it looked like his knee twisted there it looks like he was trying to fight that rush as poor shea hit him and like you stated ronnie's feet were stuck in the turf and that turf looks a little higher today that grass looked thick out there when you're walking on the field natural grass here in jacksonville and very humid weather of course we encourage the growth of that so thick and soft out there of course much attention being paid to mark brunell a six-year man out of washington acquired from green bay and the trade in 1995 he is their franchise quarterback a whole lot of time on the field for this team out of weber state picked up on waivers a year ago from the redskins that's a serious injury that's not only a heck of a blow to jaguars he still hasn't put any weight on it to get him right out of there and into the locker room jamie martin has had 11 passes this entire season completing six of them and now he is in here on this very first series one pass thrown by brunel and that is likely it for the day and martin is sacked and saw this on rushing lions defensive front porsche in again and ron rice to safety right with him take a look up here on top of the screen that's that's kerwin waldrop over there and then you see rice on the backside over here and tracy strogan's in there as well and that's a shotgun formation third and long just teeing off on that new offensive line first punt from barker high snap he had to haul down terry fair comes up to the 41 yard line dropped immediately but excellent field position for detroit will moore reserve wide receiver number 81 made the tackle but just a 35-yard punt so the lions led by charlie batch five and five as the starting quarterback for the lions and is having a brilliant month ray roberts my compton jim pine jeff harding's tony ramirez he gets his fourth start at right tackle barry sanders tommy vardell running backs moore morton and the tight end walter rasby proud exhorting the jaguars defense as they were stunned by the injury to mark grunell that's throwing on first down and it is too high too long for walter rasmy who was looking back for the ball the ball was well over his head i don't think he saw the ball i think he was looking up in the air and he saw that i don't think he ever saw the ball defensively for jacksonville ronaldo gets the start ahead of tony brackens the brackets will play on that defensive end hardy schwartz and bryce pop a very active linebacking four dave thomas aaron beasley on the corners the brilliant rookie donovan darius at safety with chris hudson the rockets into the game already here on second and ten illinois short drop by batch sideline complete to morton and morton gets all the way down to the 25-yard line 31-yard gain in a first down detroit boy look at that was a beautifully thrown ball there's a matchup on morton outside on beasley beasley gets a piece with him runs with him down the sidelines but the ball was thrown perfectly by charlie bach yeah i talked to beasley before the game and i said look you gotta you gotta keep the guys in front you gotta make sure you make big plays and make the tackle and right there you let the guy get in front of him on the 29-yard line first down lions ryan schwartz the linebacker pushed him out watch barry he strings this thing out they reach here reach here that's bright's pop now this bounces barry just waits and waits and flattens until he sees the seam then he takes it up to seat and that's what you got to do bill to tackle him you better just push them out of bounds you've got to stream that thing out even further you built that fence right and you can't stop that fence at the numbers you have to take it all the way to the sidelines ronaldo win back in defensively back under some pressure scrambles out of there adds some room and dives over the 20 to the 19. he'll be just short of the first down yardage you talk about decision making right there you saw a guy charlie batch rookie keep his composure was able to tuck the ball and get positive yards charlie match 16-23 236 yards against the steelers a very impressive drive late in that fourth quarter set up the opportunity to win on overtime i think it's decisions like that that this young quarterback has the numbers he has and the interceptions over the last four weeks he doesn't have any because he knows what to do with the ball and he doesn't hurt his team three tight engine on this third of the yard but levitz to help clean that whole thing up and i'll tell you that that in itself was a huge play that that was a huge play for the jacksonville jaguars defense you see the pressure right up the middle there's schmincke on the outside and then yurko comes and cleans the thing up you get your ends outside to contain it and then you step the quarterback up and then comes your inside push that's what yurko is yurko if you're going to describe it a 47-yard field goal attempt for jason henson no good there's no gun that's wide left and jacksonville escapes they walk out of there very lucky bad field field position from the punt got out there with no points and here's why first pass attempt of the game on second down first offensive series before shea sacked him and he saw his leg crumple and we're waiting for a medical report meanwhile jamie martin the backup is in they give it to taylor taylor has running a flag is down as taylor gets all the way into detroit territory at the 47-yard line well they got that corner pretty easy they got it held up and opened up but the flag comes out all the players coming back so the call must be against jacksonville 20-yard gain by fred taylor the brilliant rookie from florida looks like it's going to be wiped out our referee today larry numbers offense number 88 10 yard penalty repeat first down damon jones the backup tight end there's 88 on kerwin waldrop he's got his hands outside anytime you have your hands outside the shoulder pads and wrapped around the guy almost like a form tackle you're going to get called you got to keep them up inside the frameworks or the shoulder pads hidden from the officials zach crockett has come into the backfield to join fred taylor in an eye formation on first and 20. again they're trying to bounce outside runs hard gets back about six yards on the play that's how i tell you what we saw this guy a couple times now ronnie and and he has skills i mean he's got that move to him for a rookie look at the cuts look at the hole he finds and how his presence just keeps running and moving his feet and go moving forward yeah we talked to coach coughlin and coach kaufman said look thursday practice we are going to put some emphasis on running the football you can see right now it's starting to pay off well and those rushes by taylor now him as have him as the all-time rushing leader martin throwing deep it's complete mccardell he'll score touchdown jaguar and there's the hook shot from mccardell who showed two basketball moves last week on his two passing touchdowns and receptions from mark grunell jamie martin who had played only six games in 1996 with the st louis rams didn't play didn't get into action last year picked up from the redskins as we said as a backup to brunel this year and he connects on a bomb to give them the lead 67 yards of the score the point after from hollis is good and the home team jacksonville jaguars take the lead you have to wonder how many snaps jamie martin had in practice this week i'm willing to bet not many not many at all but when you throw it like that it's all good career for a score and he was hot last week with two against pittsburgh 67 yards from jamie martin who's only been in six nfl games and they were two years ago in 1996. very fair hit hard at the 25 yard line 17-yard return larry picatillo the defensive coordinator for the lion said we got to keep everything in front of us talking about the receivers right here ron rice didn't keep it in front of him as you mentioned earlier ronnie on the other pass we saw that's right you got to stay in front you can't take a gamble like that and go underneath bill and when you do that you're going to you're going to have this and you're going to also have the kareem abdul-skye hook last week mcardle raced to the goal post did a finger roll for hall of famer and then threw one up for olajuwon and his style as described by mcardle and today the sky hook that is barry sanders getting out to the 30-yard line they'll spot it just over the 30. you know the jacksonville jaguars defensively knew that stopping barry sanders they've got to try to get push in the backfield watch here brackens gets this push right here upfield but there's no push back over here and sanders finds the area where there's no push it's got to be consistent across everybody across the front to get that push across the line of scrimmage second down along four and cats drop before he can even hand the ball off yeah you can't that that's that's a blocking breakdown tony brackens he came off the line of scrimmage untouched at the line of scrimmage and they were hoping to get barry sanders in front of him to pick up the block that just can't happen when you have that kind of penetration yeah you talked to tony braxton tony bracken said this is my game i got to show these guys that i can play in the national football league he hasn't been able to make any plays right there that's his second sack of the year well i think tom coughlin by not starting in the last couple weeks is trying to get that kind of play back out of it trying to get that fire under your butt a little bit oh i know that fire i know what that fire is like coming from coach kaufman third down and again bats was gonna be sacked excellent coverage down field and as he tried to escape he slipped and was buried this time it's jose white third sack by the jaguars obviously fired up after the injury to burnell well again the sack the pressure comes from the outside here comes right up the outside there it is and then he just jumps on and falls anytime you're down the ground hey you got to get there quicker high snap john jett gets the punt off barlow looking into the sun makes a grab at the 31. he leads the afc in this category and there's a sample wide still going to the 49. 52-yard punt but an 18-yard return jacksonville in good shape when we return let's come into this game without tony boselli who's out with an ankle injury and that's why this line has been reshuffled ben coleman moving over from his left guard position the left tackle tilsky going from right guard to left guard demarco coming into tilske's spot now not only do they lose their left tackle with an ankle injury but the first report on mark burnell has a sprained left ankle no results from the x-rays given to us as yet right now it has been called a sprained left ankle martin the quarterback fred taylor cuts it back inside and gets about eight you see how selective he is and he gets up there and he and he doesn't press the hole like a lot of young backs do he doesn't even come flying up into the back of people look at the patience in the backfield so he slows down and waits and he finds the hole good vision patience and then he's able to bust forward to pick up eight yards on a first down carry and that's great stuff from a rookie running back yeah bill i was sitting here and ron rice is having a long day i talked about dbs having a tough time ron wright so far is having a long day second and two martin going deep again and there'll be a flag there the intended receiver was jimmy smith and he got tangled up with the defender like bryant wesley period brian westbrook just reached out and held him they were about 15 20 yards downfield ronnie and he just grabbed the hold of him and pulled him well that's a way that's a good one yeah that's one way to cover them i mean you talk about mccardell and jimmy smith number 32 first down phil you talk about mcardle and jimmy smith these two wide receivers are excellent receivers they fight you but you know what i like about them they want to be great they talked about not just being pro bowl players but they want to go to canton that's the first down at the 23 yard line of detroit jacksonville threatening again jamie martin the quarterback just six of 11 this season in a backup role to mark grinnell 56 yards didn't get into a game last year at washington that's taylor again gets to the 20-yard line pickup of about three alan aldridge on the tackle i think detroit missed a heck of an opportunity when to grasp this game and just take a hold of it early vernell goes down they get the punt and they move down the field and they miss that field goal that hurt and then they gave jacksonville time to regroup and think about it when you lose a key player like brunel or any quarterback team you've got to jump on it and seize that opportunity detroit didn't do that martin wants to throw sideline too high overthrowing smith the intended receiver out of bounds amy martin they i remember seeing him over in the world lately yeah 1995 he played for the rhine fire played in the world league 1996 he got his shot with st louis in the nfl as he said he only got into six games there and none at all at washington last year but you can see right there the adrenaline was flowing he threw that out man and and only uh superman could have caught that out it was high and it took off on him six to 206 pounder latest college ball at weber state in utah third down short drop and that one was tipped it appeared down back in the backfield three lions were there to drop martin as soon as you release the ball and it looks like there's going to be a penalty there steven boy the linebacker number 57. very unhappy about this call let's see what it is from larry nemer's personal foul roughing the passer number 57 half the distance to the goal automatic first down this is just an all-out blitz and yeah the hands came up right into the head face mask area that's when they're going to get you right there bang and they might even bang helmets there although it did appear to be inadvertent nonetheless it did occur and so the penalty against the lions moves the ball to the 10-yard line first and goal jacksonville they lead seven nothing 7 41 to go here in the first mark brunell receiving medical attention for a sprained ankle jamie martin at quarterback now runs out of time being chased just throws it away that's a good play for martin the pressure came from tracy scroggins number 97 off the right side yeah well he's seen a lot too he gets down there in the red zone and they come at him with the blitz they knock him on the ground he takes a shot to the head then they come out again he gets that roll out and he has pressure in his face from scroggins he's looking downfield for some separation from the defensive backs but there's none he does the smart thing and just throws the ball away second and ten second and goal jacksonville jaguars already up 7-0 shotgun formation inside handoff for taylor taylor digs down to about the seven yard line run the ball a little bit give your quarterback a chance to reset and think recoup yeah recoup from getting hit yeah he's getting hit and the pressure he's been under down there you know they just throw him into the game heck this guy thought he was going to carry a clipboard all day got comfortable in his baseball hat on the sidelines next thing you know he's in the heat of fire unconsciously throws a 67-yard touchdown and since then detroit's been after him their third string quarterback is jonathan quinn a rookie from middle tennessee state 53-53 on third down martin to the end zone incomplete flag down handed receiver mccardell his hands all over the receivers looked like abrams had the coverage kevin abrams said there were two defenders actually covering the cardel i said it would be a long day for dbs defensive pass interference number 24 in the end zone automatic first down to the one yard line abram's a nickel back and this would happen you get in a situation where you think you're going to get some help right there abrams thinks he's going to get help from the safety but he gets that back arm on his shoulder that's where it was ronnie right his right hand you're going to see it come right over top right there was his right hand on mcardle 36 yards in defensive penalties taken by the lions on this drive alone they've given them everything they've got jacksonville first and goal from the one taylor he's stuffed second effort jaguars say that he's in but no signal indicating that it looks like play had been whistled dead yeah till dilki lost his wig there look it popped off all right watch chelsea until she's over here and he gets a block and his head pops off oh man that's one way to get your hat taken right now alan aldridge came up and met him with that forearm right under the kisser there that'll wake him up about a half yard pickup that's a wake-up call you don't want taylor's effort second and goal taylor again touchdown fred taylor the rookie from florida coming back from a shoulder injury suffered in the game against pittsburgh last week he landed on the hard surface at synergy stadium in cincinnati that felt like concrete that kept him out the rest of the game and he looks like he is no worse for wear hollis for the point after and the jaguars with 605 still remaining first quarter without mark burnell are leading the lions 14 to nothing intel stadium we have been told the x-rays indicate no break to the ankle of mark brunell it is so far a sprained ankle no fracture terry fair takes hollis kickoff at the 7. terry fair can fly one to beat the kicker hollis got enough of them giving a chance for dave thomas to catch up with him good effort by the kicker hollis but detroit deep in jacksonville territory at the 31 of 57-yard return by terry fair watch me follows that wedge right up the middle and then when the thing opens up he hits for the near sideline and that's where it was open for him he was behind the wedge he had good separation from the wedge too that enabled him to cut out to the sidelines as he got through the crowd of people bear averages close to 28 yards of return a big one there spotted at the 34-yard line barry sanders trying to get wide diving tackle that is beasley aaron beasley the cornerback yeah and that that was that fence that we talked about and they took it that time all the way out to the sidelines they built that thing all the way out and you have to get your corners involved too when they come up there's beasley ronnie yeah he's there and what you got to do is like he said you got to take a shot at him and what you do is you get excited because you get a chance just to touch it i mean when you touch barry sanders you feel great especially as a defensive back because nine times out of ten you can touch it with lost about a half yard and five pass plays the lions have been sacked three times so far and he got that one away quickly to herman moore but incomplete right now for an nfl update let's go to james brown at our fox television center hey tim after ronnie's niners spotted the panther the seven nothing lead steve young 6-7 on this drive 53 yards including that two-yard touch to j.j stokes all tied at seven back to tim he-man bill and ronnie lott jb they are hanging in there man i know brian young went down but jb they think that they can still win that division there third down about 10 and a half crowd into it here batch that's complete herman moore first down lions at the 21-yard line of jacksonville 14-yard pass play herman moore now 58 on the season caught eight last week against pittsburgh and that's last week he started coming out of that slump he's been in or whatever the heck he's been in you know a lot of reports people are saying he wasn't healthy and that's not necessarily the case he just hasn't been getting the ball strong that's right bill we talked to him before the game he told both of us he said hey i'm fine they just need to get the ball to me first down at the 21. moore did miss two games earlier in the season with a groin fold but he's been healthy the last two weeks lags everywhere jose white jumped let's see if he was drawn off defense number 93 encroachment five yard penalty still first down you know what it's like trying to get on the other side of the the line of scrimmage trying to stop very barry sanders well you're trying to get that push you know and that's what they talked about all week getting off the ball and getting that push of the offensive line ball moved to the 16-yard line first in five lions jose white number 93 the culprit with jacksonville herman moore in motion sanders straight ahead hit right at the line of scrimmage got a yard at most joel 99 the defensive end made the hit you know we talked about how you contain barry sanders and how you have what you have to do to control them and what the jacksonville jaguars you have to crawl them into an area because like ronnie said you can't touch him say you got to get a few guys and you got to push them over here so you get over there and a few guys get over here and then you get them all circled up in that pin right there and then when they're in there and they're in that pen you know what it usually leads to that's rolling out and under pressure throws the ball short intended for morton but it was smengy doing the chasing again mengio came into the game with six and a half and was involved in one of the three jacksonville stacks earlier you get that you get that fence over here ronnie the fence over here you get a couple guys to push them this way and a couple guys that come in from the other side and you get them in that corral and then you just kind of close it down in on them and when all them cows are lined up in the crowd and leading to you know you know what they do at the end of that crowd aren't you what do they do well they get them they make hamburger third down and four short drop by batch the fade is overthrown crow while the intended receiver couldn't escape from the coverage that's pulled the trigger a little bit quickly incomplete you know we talk about barry and what he is to the team and what he is to the league and you know there's only a few guys you can say that are one-word guys you know of course michael in basketball and before we say barry you know everyone knows who the heck you're talking about there's only one and i think when you become a single name you're something no you are something because the crowd went crazy when they said barry sanders at the beginning of the game jason hanson will attempt a 34-yard field goal he missed from 47. that one is good for jason hansen 336 remaining first quarter the lions are on the board jacksonville leads 14-3 hill stadium where on december 6 it is 80 degrees and they've got the coolers out there for the teams where all tell is broken loose right from the beginning with mark burnell twisting that ankle getting out of the game and what a blow that is for jacksonville they'll do everything they can to muster through this game but i'm talking about that stretch run through december with a banged up mark brunel that really takes a lot out of your office but so far bill they've been running the football as you said earlier in the game they have to run the ball jason hanson's kickoff deep to the end zone good kick for hanson barlow will not bring it out jacksonville will start from the 20. the jaguars with a two-game lead in the afc central over their hated rivals from pittsburgh isn't that amazing well this game down here is going to be huge now they got a tough road really you look at it tennessee and at minnesota and then the monday night game pittsburgh which with everything could be on the line there on the other hand three or four at home not a bad way to know not a bad way to finish but i like that because because it gets you battle tough it gets you battle ready for the playoffs playing those tough teams jamie martin the quarterback for the injured mark brunell taylor the lone setback has the ball taylor second effort gets a couple maybe three taylor now the all-time leading rusher for jacksonville you know i think jacksonville you talked about getting that running game going getting freddie taylor up to where he was earlier in the season before his injury and then 22. you got to think that you have to take the load off jamie martin because the offense you can't call the same game you're going to call if mark grinnell was a quarterback two tight ends in now damon jones joins pete mitchell second and eight martin connects that's complete jimmy smith on the first down jaguars kenny martin's pass complete to number 82 jimmy's gotta hold the clipboard bill he's doing pretty good there yeah you know and he has some time too because they come with a rush on the outside and the line buys him from time to sit down and be comfortable enough to find smith and i don't care what quarterback you are you can be a 10th string quarterback if you've got time in the pocket to find an open receiver it makes it a whole heck of a lot easier on first down taylor trying to get wide pulled down from behind good play by tracy scroggins showing some foot speed i'll tell you what the detroit lions defense is a speed defense to me these guys all can run fast and watch how quick they get outside here now that's scroggins that's that's a defensive lineman it rushes in there rushing past you see how fast he came off his block and got outside on freddy taylor there's not many defensive ends that have that kind of speed that can move laterally scroggins have been bothered by a calf injury missed four games glad to have him back in action today good protection for martin and the ball is cut just short of the first down yardage keenan mccardell climbs the ladder to haul that down the veteran from unlv the one thing i've seen ronnie is i think the detroit secondary learned something on the first couple possessions of jacksonville and that is go back to what they talked about all week keep the ball in front of you but don't get beside it and don't get beside the receiver don't get let deceiver get in front of you behind you keep them in front so when you catch the ball close and make the tackle don't give him any yards after the catch third down less than a yard to go for jacksonville at their own 42. taylor breaks loose and jeffrey steers him out or he is down the sideline for a score but he gets to the 28-yard line a 30-yard run bill i'm getting the sense that his idol who's sitting on the other side barry sanders has got this guy fired up he's running with some authority today i'll tell you what a job zach crockett's done he stepped in there he was the guy on the touchdown run he was the lead guy on that play got up on the linebacker and taylor just looks at number 34 and stayed right behind him the whole way and damon shelton would normally be there out with an ankle injury he's the starting pullback left the game earlier and zach crockett has made a couple of big blocks since coming in to replace shelton until she needs a new chin strap see right here he's got to go over the sidelines to get a new chin shot because his helmet's come off way too much already yeah they're out there banging head zone that offensive line is coming off the ball you know tom coughlin had them going ronnie you mentioned earlier this week on wednesday and thursday it was a nine on seven inside drill and they were going to establish a running game throughout the month of december the one-yard gain for jones brings us to the end of the first quarter with a score jacksonville 14 the lions three fox nfl sunday continues in a moment here they are 14 to 3 up jamie martin's been the key to that too came random off the bench carrying clipboard doing it all his life but he had to throw the football and he did it on his first down 67 yards for the score to mccardell here's a reverse that is win it alvis win it and good recovery defensively for shay holding his line drops him for about a loss now let's go for an nfl update to james brown tim i know bill and ronnie will like this take a look at steve young is he hands off to terry kirby what does he do kirby third career touchdown toss this one to terrell owens san francisco on top 14-7 right now atlanta losing to the coach a falcons lost 49er victory tied atop the nfc west back to 10 bill and ronnie wow colts on top of the falcons that is a wow long way to go in that one terry kirby threw a duck too that wasn't a pass on third down and about nine and a half ball is dropped by moore by barlow pardon me reggie barlow jamie martin and a flag down on the play martin had the ball there the illegal formation appears to be the signal illegal shift shift the man in motion and the tackle we're both moving and not set penalty is declined third down so two guys moving instead of only one allowed bobby ross a little upset there he's like wait a minute it can't be third down brian parker it is fourth they've changed a marker to indicate that and mike hollis will attempt a 44-yard field goal his first field goal attempt of the game hollis has it alice now 16-21 on the season hitting from 44 and widening the lead 17-3 jacksonville we know they're out 17-3 early in the second quarter johnsonville leading detroit and the jags without three of their starters brunell bolselli and damon shelton this is terry fair fair gets some room another good return for terry fair pulled down by tiwami settles reserves safety got all the way out to the 38-yard line there's ben coleman's talking with pacelli is out so coleman came here chilsky actually moved over from this position and demarco came up from off the bench and these so far these guys been doing a good job take a look at coleman outside here with tilsky look at the protection right there to the time they give jamie martin you have to give jamie martin even more time than mark burnell first down lions at their own 38. straight back for bats can't find him and sack again boy bryce pop just pushed his way right through everybody on his way to the quarterback four jacksonville sacks they had only 20 coming into this game not among the league leaders to say the least but those are the opportunities to rush too yeah those are cover sacks bill the secretary's playing excellent back there watch pop just pushes his way right through ramirez two tight ends in raspbian sloan horton split out to the left sanders on a draw has some room out the left side turns on the gas and is forced out by thomas after a pickup of about five now make it a 12-yard gain pardon me out to the 43-yard line making up the sack loss yeah i've been right there where i thought i could catch barry sanders and you know what barry sanders is a lot faster you look at him you think well he's not moving that fast he's small but i can tell you you got to take the right angle and bill talked about corralling you better take where he's going to be not try to catch him ron rivers into the backfield the main crow well wide receiver three wides good fake by batch patches oh the ball was there but so was a tackler that was beasley and it was jermaine crowell as the ball and beasley arrived beasley won it waterboy hit that was a waterboy hit pretty well designed play too it's the naked bootleg out the back side and that's just he doesn't see crowell early enough yeah just the way he held that ball a little bit too long buying beasley time to get there and beasley did the right thing he used his shoulder he didn't leave with his head john jet into punt standing at his 29 patch zero for his last three attempts he's gone 101 without an interception now but he hasn't been able to get the pass attack going for detroit something bobby ross wanted today 41-yard punt fair catch will start jacksonville from their 15. luther ellis number 94 of the lions you talk about a guy that ties up offensive lineman that's a big powerful man taylor the lone set back double tight in formation damon jones out of there sadowsky in for him martin just got it away nearly sacked save the sack yardage mitchell the tight end pete mitchell gets it out to the 20-yard line for a gain of about four jacksonville you can see dominating in total yardage here even without mark brunello went down on the second offensive play of the game to an ankle injury second and five long five yeah there's ellis taylor dropped behind the line by big luther ellis loss of about two play oh watch the two guys that finish up this play and watch how they work in here here's luther ellis and here's steven boyd now i want you to watch what the defensive tackle does for his lineback good job actually that was fredericton 53 that came from the weak side but there's always going to be one linebacker that's free of any blocker when you have a defensive tackle in there to get that kind of push and demand somebody else helping out third and seven they bring reggie barlow out four wide receivers on this play martin close to the short man and caught by mitchell a tight end and it'll be just short of the first down at the 25-yard line it'll leave a yard to go and the putting unit comes on 1106 to go first half jacksonville 17-3 the lead over detroit the lions in a must-win situation here to keep any playoff hopes alive parker the punter stands just inside his own 10. terry fair in the sun back at the 33 of detroit kick from barker bear from the 30. takes it outside the elusive return man gets up to the 48-yard line before he's pushed out by mike logan 46-yard punt an 18-yard return good field position destroyed he benched scott mitchell he went with charlie batch look at the improvement patch now five and five his record and in the last four games he shot up to nearly 64 percent in completion percentage hasn't had an interception in 101 tosses now so far in this game things have not gone so well two of seven 45 yards and he's been sacked four times space pressure every time he's been back and excellent coverage downfield by the jaguars secondary first down with the lions 48 play action fake to sanders has some time that ball is short diving attempt to grab it by morton but incomplete flag down let's go for it holding signal against the lions larry nimmers the referee today holding offense number 61 10 yard penalty still first down jim pine the center calls for the holding let's check in with james brown for an nfl update jb tim take a look at how new orleans is making life difficult for dallas carrie collins under pressure good escape movement here and he whips a touchdown pass to aaron kraber saints on top of the cowboys 9-3 in the second tim bill and ronnie looked like a hockey scorer when it came up there jb two weekend of upsets batch that's complete tight end raspy wrestled down to the ground for number 89 walter raspy about the 45 yard line it'll leave second and 13. i'll tell you raspy along with david sloan and pete kriplovich they have some big tight ends you know they don't use them much rarely in the lion's offense you hear the tight end called but there are some big guys that can create some match-up problems for small db's two receivers out to the left one to the right they give it to barry sanders sanders trying to get wide driven out of bounds at the 48-yard line and i think that's what detroit has to do 17-3 you know second quarter still a lot of time now but be patient you know keep feeding barry the ball let him get his because he's going to get his and sylvester crown the offensive coordinator coordinator doesn't want to rush anything just because you're behind don't force the ball or this game into charlie batch's hands stay with the plan because if you scored touchdown here now it's a game a workable game for your offense what if you're only down by seven lions only one of five on third down they were over 10 against pittsburgh in the game they won in overtime last week rivers in for sanders and the ball is caught by ron rivers and he has the first down so they convert here to the 41-yard line of jacksonville and a lot of the change on third down in the back they take barry out you see barry's coming back in now and then rivers goes off they change on third down for a couple reasons one is barry was nicked up a little bit and they don't want him banging on helping out bloc pass blocking they don't want him coming up on offensive lines defensive linemen getting a chip on him and two just the fact that they're going to use and rest them a little bit get him down the hall first down from the 41-yard line this is sanders sanders has a hole i had a feeling this corral was going to break sanders trying to get to the end zone driven out at the two-yard line barry sanders you know he's gonna break one that for 39. that's what we're just saying you know barry's going to get his just keep getting him the ball i want you to watch this and then this this is amazing he takes over now watch him take it all the way back that's what he's so good i'll tell you he goes through this thing like his labyrinth of bodies and he's the only one that knows how to get to the daylight now if you watch this from the hardee's angle now there's a line back he's trying to keep his shoulder contained now you see hudson trying to come into the picture and you see darius being able to now lose contain beasley drove him out play action batch has to throw it too quickly there's no chance there pressure coming up from big number 90 tony brackens yeah he didn't take the sack here he kept the ball down there close watch he's down now watch the push right here brackens is in there and a lot of guys in that situation bill they try to make the throw they want to make the touchdown he knows that he's got another shot at it he was patient and got rid of the ball second and goal from the two you see you see sanders on the sideline and everybody always wonders why why barry gets it down to the two and then you take him out and bats didn't like something he saw here and he sprints over there to sort this situation out a situation for the lions where they need these seven points 802 remaining first half trailing 17-3 started their their possessions have started five times at their own 40 or better and all they have is three points to show for it at a missed field goal early in the first quarter from 47 yards out by jason hansen hanson's 34 yarder all they have been able to muster here in the first half you know you see barry on the sidelines and everyone says heck he rushes all over the field he gets you down to the goal line and then you take him out how come you take him out i i think you put it in the back vardell not because he's a bigger back not because he's a power back but i think you put him in because you can call a play and what i mean by calling to play is you have a distinct area you're going to run at and you'll run to that hole with barry it's a different circumstance you're in the middle of the field and you want to he's going to go anywhere you don't know where he's going to go he might start left go right go and for your offensive lineman and your tight end and the big people up there they need to know where they're blocking when they get down there around the goal line that short field and naturally they put them right back in after you gave that long explanation barry sanders stops short of the goal line is he in and the ball peeled away by jacksonville but lay has been ruled dead but sanders did not get into the end zone bardel came in as the blocker but they brought sanders back in after they had ron rivers on the field bill and then obviously had something special in mind for sanders oh you see he's going back off now and you see how they had to string it out though they strung that play out they couldn't run downhill they couldn't go right at the two gap right at the four hole they couldn't do it when barry comes in they've got to string it outside and let him pick his hole when they're gonna run downhill they come with the they come in with vardell third and goal and e the length of a football for a touchdown bardel no you know and i sit here and i watch this game and every time i watch jerry sanders the one thing that i i'm curious about the greatest back in football put him in a situation where he can use his athletic ability yeah he's going downhill right here bardel but he can't give you anything he can't give you no jump he can't move out of the way and barry sanders in this situation he'll find a way to get in i'll tell you what though that was a heck of a job filling that hole up by the jacksonville jaguars defense jose white was the guy who made that last play to stop vardell they're going on fourth and now jacksonville is going to take care of actionville calls timeout and they had barry sanders in motion wide to the sideline on that play and i bet i i like to sit here and say that i bet that play would have been i'm almost positive i've been a quarterback draw quarterback draw they were going to go empty backfield here here's barry they motion them out and that's what that's going to do it's going to take the safety out over here and spread your line back around see now look at the gap right in there see that that's why jacksonville called timeout anytime that guy's on the football field barry sanders as a defensive player even though he's going to run around and maybe not help the offensive lineman you're all going to pay attention to him so he can be a decoy which he was on that play saw dick geron briefly the defensive coordinator for jacksonville a former lion defensive back and obviously he's glad to have his team take the time out make sure they had the right call on for what they probably smelled a quarterback drop fourth and goal they need a football length to get in wow yeah they got movement they got ramirez movement tony ramirez the right tackle number 75 making his fourth start ahead of larry tharp he's won that job on the right side for detroit prior to the snap false start number 75 five yard penalty still fourth down sixth round pick a year ago out of northern colorado well the crowd noises look these guys are talking to one another what's the snapdown what's it on it's larry it's mo it's curling which one uh you said larry no i did i said moe so now they have to take the field goal 24-yard attempt by hanson credit the crowd with this development yeah you know what i i think the goal is good i think that hurt him and he's had to settle for a field goal they brought barry in they brought him out they went back line up and run the ball downhill and you got a seven-point game they tinker around with everything they have to settle for three x-rays them x-rays were negative it was officially a strained ankle but he is not going to return today jamie martin is in to replace him and he's done pretty well this is barlow you know we go back and talk about that sprained ankle you saw his foot get planted in the ground and you wonder the grass appeared to me as if it was longer than it was last time we were here and when barry sanders comes to town you might let the grass grow a little longer to slow him down and i'm wondering if maybe the grass wasn't a little longer and mark brunell's cleats got caught up in that and what he's used to playing in it's a theory i like that theory bill i like that theory use all the things you can use to slow down barry sanders well we went down here the field was wet this morning first down from the 22 23 yard return by barlow martin the quarterback taylor shakes off a tackle taylor with a burst of speed he'll be very close to the first down what an effort by fred taylor darius holland and a flag down back at the line of scrimmage you know in this year i think ronnie you look around the league and you talk about rookies and you know everyone talking during the run number 82 10 yard penalty repeat first down of course everybody talked about the quarterbacks leaf and manning and as of lately charlie bats has surely shown that he's as good as any rookie out there and then and then you talk about randy moss and the numbers he's put up and what he's done to help out that offense up there in minnesota but this youngster right here freddie taylor he's as good if not better than any of them i agree with you right there i mean those numbers definitely support and he is an excellent running back on first down and 20 taylor gets back about eight well a front runner for offensive rookie of the year no doubt minnesota's randy moss he's been brilliant second in the nfl with more than a thousand receiving yards leads and touchdowns with 11. but as you guys point out fred taylor more total yards more touchdowns than moss not to mention three touchdowns of 70 yards or more and he is now the all-time leading rusher in the short history of jacksonville passing natron means earlier in this game martin that's complete jimmy smith hit immediately and driven out of bounds you know and also taylor didn't start the first couple games he wasn't the starter stewart was your starter early in the season yeah baltimore and carry up here both of them carry a pretty nice bat what do you say sosa mcguire both these guys right there if you look at those numbers they're carrying some big sticks gonna leave third down a long four james stewart outstanding back in his own right gone for the season with a knee injury and he's been very encouraging and helpful to the rookie fred taylor and fred has given him that credit martin deep sideline that's complete to smith to the 35 of detroit over brian westbrook twice now jamie martin has hit the ball well i'll tell you jamie martin good decision there he saw the blitz coming the line bought him some time freddie taylor picked up but he saw the man-to-man coverage up top with jimmy smith and westbrook and just floated the ball out there where only smith could catch it that was a heck of a throw well we talked to mccardell and mark cardell says well i like doing the dirty work my man on the outside jimmy smith he's the flamboyant one he likes going deep and you can see right there jimmy smith excellent play excellent throw by martin 37-yard gain first down at the 35 taylor dropped after a gain of about a yard jamie martin is not a kid we mentioned he's a five-year man 28 years old from weber state he started with the rams was drafted by them back in 1993. he spent a year in the world league but in 1996 he had his last significant nfl action and that was only six games so martin getting the job here after not playing at all for washington last year picked up on waivers seven of 10. he's having himself a fun afternoon so far second down nearly ten taylor dropped behind the line of scrimmage and that's boyd stephen boyd the linebacker from boston college in to make the drop for a loss steven boyd who played under coach coughlin at boston college he said he was a hard-working guy it just got better and better you saw that you saw that wrap he had on on his arm that goes up into his shoulder if you saw the thanksgiving game he played with a bad shoulder there and had a heck of a game and just a competitive guy just a blue collar guy wants to work hard and make football plays it's that simple leads a team in tackles third and 12. the shotgun martin sideline wide open there and that is complete to jimmy smith i hate to play official but right there if it looked like the foot might have might have caught the line it might have caught the line there i'm not sure if both feet were in they show it at the 22-yard line officials sure had an unobstructed view there's nobody around them let's look at the back foot it's still up in the air and he's dragging and trying to get it down but he doesn't get it down first down nonetheless and taylor buried behind the line he'll lose the yard on the play you know his db's we don't like giving the receivers anything made that tackle there wasn't a db in sight there that time but you're really looking out for your guys well the db didn't give it to him the official did second and 12. taylor the lone setback cartel out to the left smith to the right martin good protection most of taylor on the backfield taylor has the first down very close to it at the 12-yard line as we reach the two-minute warning jamie martin is six of his last six coordinator calling himself a fine game really buying time and creating match-ups to help out jamie martin yeah i like that and you know what else i like is that jamie martin has done an excellent job of making good decisions and that's what you got to be you got to be a decision maker bill you know you go back and think of the off-season they trade rob johnson to buffalo they get an extra draft choice and with that extra first round draft choice they were able to get fred taylor and donovan darius not a bad move they know what they're doing down here first in first and ten at the 12. they can get a first down inside the two good protection for martin touchdown jimmy smith throwing it over terry fair and he had about four feet on him there's a flag down in the end zone and a discussion ensues about the amount of time bobby ross would say it takes to use the instant replay 11-yard touchdown pass jacksonville waiting to see if it counts so they say there's no infraction martin five for five on that drive well right here you see jimmy smith trying to get to the outside and fair grabbed his arm there and you know what you know we're talking about they're looking back in the quarterback you have to stay on that receiver all the way down i just can't believe it alice for the point after and the jaguars the 9-3 leading team of the afc central rolls up to a 24-6 lead 154 still to go in the first half yeah one is you got to look at the throw right here look at the look at the pocket look at the blocking right there and then the throw a nice throw to the outside but when you got jimmy smith and you got mcardell you can't look back in the backfield these guys will eat you alive looking back in the backfield yeah he's calling his agent he's on the phone with his agent saying hey let's take a look at this you gotta give me a blockbuster deal here well we've seen another guy who's kind of lingered around the nfl on its fringes for five years frank green become a starter in washington it's going to be hard to pry him out of that role and if it isn't with washington it'll be somewhere else so remember this name jamie martin a backup so far in his five years in the national football league here in the world football league but this guy right here this guy right here chris palmer the offensive coordinator for the jacksonville jaguars he does an excellent job as you said bill of creating matchups and really he's taking advantage of him that's jamie martin he's taking advantage of the matchups you know what i'm surprised i mean he he's calling the offensive plays today and i don't think that's always been the case because i think maybe the head coach sometimes meddles in the play calling trying to get more of that running game going to chew up the clock but if you have you've seen they have faith and confidence in jamie martin they're not they're not just handing the ball off here ronnie kicks it up and it's a line shot we'd rather not see terry fair bringing that ball back out of bounds two yard line that's a penalty they spot that ball up here kickoff out of bounds on the kicking team what will we put in play at the 40-yard line first down so try to keep it in and away from fair unable to do so start from the 40. next week a fox nfl sunday doubleheader yeah you're going to play next week whether you want to lose but each one of them means something on first down batch to throw intended for johnny morton incomplete the jaguars went 78 yards and 10 plays used up 453 of detroit's valuable time which is a must-win situation for the lions as you can see they've got a tough schedule to finish with and to stay in this playoff hunt they realistically need to win all four of their remaining games the loss here today is pretty much going to have them talking about next year about which they have plenty to talk about with young charlie batch firmly established at quarterback and second and ten batch drills at the hermann moore complete gain of a five to the 45 yard line of the lions 146 on the clock yeah they do have a lot to talk about with charlie bats in the off season and there's some excitement in detroit just with him alone but you know barry sanders year in year out gets his yards gets his numbers i mean he's getting up there in age i mean they've got to do something fast for this guy alone yep i look at him and i say he's the roger clemens of football right now third and five batch gets it out to sanders sanders has the first down into jacksonville territory at the 49. they're gonna go no huddle now they're lining up but i'll tell you that's one play i like they do with barry on the backfield get him the ball out into the flat because when he gets it out there there's areas for him to work a lot of finger pointing going on out there the offensive line the defensive line remember you got the new rule they can't flinch flinch uh showy you're going to blitz and then stop and force the other guys to pull back tim i saw a big flinch several guys in the flinch department how long did that just take to talk about that there was a neutral zone infraction against the defensive team number 70 who went in the neutral zone and caused the man to false start on offense five yard penalty still first down well they don't have a number 70 but uh bracken's 90 here that's close enough right the ball goes to the 46-yard line first and five in jacksonville territory 123 on the clock two wides out to the left one to the right batch oh what a catch that is herman moore fingertip grab defender westbrook right there with him first down at the 30. well i'll tell you he just took it right out of the hands of mike logan mike logan was right there on the block and he came up and just grabbed it and took the ball right out of his hands they both had their hands on the ball watch it right over here they both have their hands on the ball big body big body bill big body strong receivers that's been moore's mo for ever since he's been in the league 116 with a timeout on the field at the 31-yard line first half of this game boy i'll tell you one thing about the jacksonville jet throwing it down field taking the sacks for them from that great pressure from jacksonville 116 remaining first half 24-6 jacksonville leading without mark brunell movement again a flag is down that's his pass off the mark intended for herman moore i'll tell you the one thing that they've been able to do is yet the sacks i mean they came into this game with only 20 sacks and jacksonville has four today so the just that fact in itself that's way above their average per game trust me and they're getting to them and they're putting them on the ground and that for jacksonville is a lot in itself yeah bill you know the one thing that i've seen today that i hadn't seen from jacksonville is their ability to play man-to-man coverage getting getting up on the receivers and pressure defense number 97 offside at the snap five yard penalty repeat first down ronaldo win offside twice now on this drive jacksonville's defenders those brackens again that's that's why ronaldo is mad he called my number everybody in the stands thinks that i was offsides i wasn't offsides it was tony and that's two for tony first and five raw play sanders tried to cut back slipped on that greasy turf he's near the first down marker depending on the spot 102 left to go well jacksonville tries to run a stunt watch here tony comes outside ronaldo comes inside when you come inside you have to take your shot there you can't break down and you know what happened right there dave thomas stood outside and they corralled they were chilling back here get back inside short of the first down flags again the ball never came up from jim pine yeah and and ray roberts the tackle moved false start offense number 64. five yard penalty still second defense they charge jeff harding's the right guard well coming up on our visa halftime report jb terry howie and chris will have scores and highlights from around the league and our fox sports ticker is up to the second stats all coming up on the visa halftime report backing up the lions second and six blitz coming back hangs in he's got a man touchdown lions that is jermaine crowell the rookie from virginia 27-yard touchdown pass that's all charlie betts there all charlie black in the pocket it was all truly bad i'll tell you what it was all barry sanders too ronnie because jacksonville gambled on that play they came with the blitz and barry sanders stepped up and met the safety and bought charlie bats time to make that throw sanders who can literally do it all whatever he's asked to do he'll do and he produced there helping his quarterback batch you said you talk about a team guy hanson for the point after lions get themselves back into the game with 35 seconds left in the first half there's bats right here watch the throw he makes and crow well getting to the corner of the end zone and right there you see the defensive back looking back and not running to the receiver and trying to catch up to the receiver and that's a name to remember too jim rayne crowell we saw him and i don't feel right he's a big tall receiver just like herman moore yeah i really like this guy a lot i mean he's got great speed and right there you saw him get to the corner of the end zone watch number 20 pick up the blitz right here watch this pick up barry sees it picks it up bang that would be a sack if it wasn't for barry sanders travis davis the man that was blowing in there and that opened it up crowell with a touchdown a 24-13 game you know it's funny yesterday we're sitting there bill and i went to get something to eat and who do we see we see barry sanders and he's sitting there with all his guys i mean the great thing about barry sanders to me is not his running ability but his ability to be a team guy he's the type of person he is yeah he's always i mean he plays this game and he respects this game you know the guy has a lot of integrity you never see him doing anything outlandish just a top-notch guy charlie badge 4-5 on that drive 51 yards in the touchdown strike to crowl slip kick ball loose at the 32-yard line recovered by jacksonville with 30 seconds still to go barely recovered by jacksonville none of the up man damon jones i think that was the sofa i think i think the sofa had that ball just rolling his lap number 88 they caught on the sofa what are they calling the sofa well he does furniture commercials but they say the real reason is that he's just lazy he's just a guy he just will flop around on a sofa it's a heck of a name now i like that nickname the sofa second year man from southern illinois they think he's going to just develop into an outstanding tight end he's getting a lot of playing time they're just going to let the time go down here that jaguars with a 24-13 lead an exceptional performance by the jaguars losing their pro bowl quarterback mark brunell on the second play of the game to a sprained ankle and jamie martin coming in and leading them to a 24-13 halftime lead two touchdown passes and a great job by their defense stifling charlie batch and barry sanders until late in this first half and the lions have themselves back in it we've got a great second half ahead jb terry and howie will be along with a visa halftime report in a moment right there as far as the officiating goes and if you talk to the officials they want to be right i mean they don't want to interfere with the game and so you think that the officials themselves would favor replays sure they would anything to make it perfect here comes terry fair and he's already got 130 yards in return yardage and the ball came loose down inside the 35. looks like he ruled it down 26 yard return for terry fair good field position again which fair has been the man giving it to him yeah he's definitely down before that ball came up they spotted it at the 32 yard line i'm sure tom coughlin went in there at halftime and that's one area that needed to be improved on is there kickoff and punt return you take a look at the halftime stats and i think the four sacks has been achieved defensively jacksonville has really put the pressure on charlie bach no question as you pointed out something they haven't really done for any great degree only 20 sacks coming into the game sanders trying to squirt loose can't do it good tackle on them by ronaldo win a heck of a play by win right there you know you're coming down you talk about the line getting that push on barry he not only got the push watch what he does right here watch him get the push and keep stringing this thing out all the way down the line of scrimmage and he shows up and is able to get off the block afterwards gain of about two second and eight charlie badge trying to change it up clock ticking down or not just got it off second down play and sanders has the first down or very close to it charlie bats right there i mean i'm sitting here looking at him and bill didn't panic was able to get that audible out and change the play and really i mean he created that run for barry sanders going to be short of the first down by a little bit about a half a yard just underway in the second half jacksonville on top 24-13 terry fair 112 yards in kickoff returns in the first half brought this one out to the 33-yard line to set up good field position batch now connects for the first down herman moore dropped right at midfield and the big play late in the first half to jermaine crowell to get the lions back into it after a pair of field goals by jason hansen right at midfield first down detroit two wides out to the right one to the left sanders on the draw no way good job by the linebacker schwartz number 58 brian schwartz holding his ground to make the hit well watch what they do you see you have to be selective defensively count the people in here one two three four five and then bang you have six and seven come attack the line of scrimmage just as the ball is snapped so when you get first down here barry in the backfield you've got to be choosy and you also have to be careful when you send people up in there to blow up that run former lion kelvin pritchett was first across the line to slow up sanders batch on second and ten trying to find an open man eludes the rusher now takes out and may have the first down great effort by charlie batch good coverage again down field by jacksonville and it is a first down for a rookie quarterback or any young guy in the league i don't care if it's a second year guy third year guy this kid really seems to grasp it all well and you know how some people get intimidated when they come into the game and and it seems like the game is too much for them yeah and we talked to herman moore before he and he's burst a versus sack on his elbow there those things are painful they swell it looks like a golf ball hanging off the end play action patch comes back to the other side incomplete big hit johnny morton couldn't hold on as dave thomas i believe it got there to put the hit on him see see the golf ball so you see how that thing sticks out watch it look at it what happened is i think burst when you hit that he hit the ground remember that catch he rolled over hit the ground and that bursa sack burst johnny morton 59 catches coming into the game he's only had one catch so far in this game today diane stablion is in for herbie moore sanders sanders has running room on the near side out of bounds at the 27 yard line jacksonville a 13-yard gain you know they said the defensive coordinator dick duron told his guys take your shot don't break down in front of barry sanders and sit there in front of him because he'll lose you just go ahead and when you get up on him take your shot said than done well what he's actually in essence saying is it's okay to be embarrassed by this guy because when you're gonna dive out there and you're gonna look like a fool but he makes a lot of great ones look like fools and if you get him you look like a hero because it's a rarity one-on-one to stop him first down detroit fade to morton incomplete good coverage again dave thomas pumped up there he's done a good job on morton thomas the 30 year old seven year man out of tennessee still excited about last night's victory by the balls and you see the ball coming from the brightness to the shadow and sometimes that's tough to pick up but right there dave thomas does a good job of coming back and getting at the ball a lot of defensive backs when they make that play they don't fight the receiver down to the ground and he made an excellent play there that's what you always talk about you say follow that ball all the way to the end then batted away safety chris hudson made a good diving try at a pick from up short of the interception second and ten hatch has time and that one is too high overthrown intended for crowell jacksonville's using a various number of defensive linemen and defensive rush fronts german moore has returned to the field and what do they do to help them over there with that that elbow it's not really much you can't do i mean when it when the when like bill said it bursts and it starts to drain all you can do is let it drain some and then wrap it back up and hope it hope that it doesn't burst anymore in motion goes crowell match on third and ten and that's batted down at the line of scrimmage fourth down upcoming good defensive series there for jacksonville i told you they were using a variety of defensive linemen that's henry taylor that time and they use a variety of defensive fronts they line up in a four-man front here's henry taylor right here watch him get his hand up or or his helmet hey that's using your head henry oh henry but that time they lined up four down lyman and then they dropped one off and it actually was a three-man rush and then sometimes they'll line up three and have a linebacker back there and bring him in as a fourth man rushing they're using a variety of defensive linemen in a rotation and a variety of defensive fronts trying to confuse and get the offensive line of the detroit lions out of rhythm and you know something bill we talked about this the heat the heat here it's like 80 degrees and in the humidity really also takes a lot out of you by rotating them you need these guys fresh in that fourth quarter i'm sorry that was fernando smith that used his head on that deal that wasn't henry six of the other guys and they've got a little delay here as they try to fix the play clocks both ends of the field apparently they've got a problem so see if they can keep things don't worry i'll do it in just one second well you heard that plea from the officials and there's you can see that they're not all lit up he was polite yeah i mean don't you think they've taken a bad rap here bill the last week the officials well just just for the fact that you're saying that the officials it's their fault and you know heck they're the officials aren't the ones that shot down instant replay right they didn't even get a vote yeah and if you think of the number of plays that they have to call throughout the course of a game and and like the director of officiating jerry seeman said you know if i could take three or four back a game you know out of the 2100 plays that there are every weekend if i could take three or four back hey that's a pretty good ratio actually now you can see they're still having problem with the play clocks of course the quarterbacks desperately need those off at both end however one is not working they both must be turned off advising that they both be turned off until they're working properly and they'll keep the time on the field now obviously that's not as good for the players to see but nonetheless it would be a long delay if they continue to have an electronic problem i like how they can talk over the loudspeaker to that one guy he can hear him so can everybody else field goal attempt from the 35-yard line for jason henson a 45-yard attempt hanson has two field goals already he's two for three today that is good jason hanson hits from 45 and the lions draw three points closer 10 34 to go in the third quarter st johns river where not everybody's watching football today on this 80 degree day 34 seconds remain in the third quarter the lions now scored on their last free drive to touchdown a pair of field goals you know what jacksonville is letting the lions hang around they're letting them still be in this ball game when they should have sealed this thing a long time ago and actually for the lions too you know they've had opportunities and they're settling for field goals they're inside the red zone three times only got two field goals out of it and then the other time they were in the red zone they missed a field goal bill you talked about that and i think the thing that you got to realize in this situation when you're on the road by keeping it close as we all know keeping the game close and having barry sanders and having herman moore you've got a shot you got a you've got a nice shot well they've still been trying to get those play clocks turned off or left at zeros and that's taking a little bit more time see they got the one off down here and then they have the other one on see that one's off now the one up in the tunnel on the other side is still on that see that's on it has 40 seconds on there please turn the blank clock off and really in the corner of the end zone also yeah both of them have to be off because one team can't look at the clock and have the other team not see and that's jacksonville's side which and they could see the clock this is under the assumption that each of them can be turned off individually and that may not be the case it may it may be some desperate man trying to turn those up and then you see they had to run it down to zero down to zero and hold it there that's what they're going to do there's this guy down here he was he was pointing to he says yeah this one here coach has got to cover a lot of duties especially at his home stadium well they let the grass grow long and then they tried to get them to have the game clock going you know bill every time we go to these home stadiums everybody's trying to get that little edge you know there's always something there's it's called home cooking you got the home cooking it's your house you know what goes on in your house hanson to kick it off going deep it'll be logan at the two logan upset diving forward loose ball and he was probably already down there's no indication that they're going to give the ball up it is still jacksonville ball 17 yard return by logan kevin abrams made a really nice tackle but as you can see he was down and it'll be jacksonville ball when we return to the sights as he's watching that makeshift line they got all turned around three new positions starting in there and take a look at where they've been running the football although they've tried mostly up the middle but most yards have come right where they normally come over the left side even though coleman's in there for bracelet on first down from the 22-yard line the jaguar's first possession of the second half fred taylor first down yardage to the 35-yard line yeah and we've talked about it you talk about running the football in december you talk about tom coughlin wanting to dominate in their line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball and thus far in this game that's what's winning it for him offensively wise fred taylor has just been exciting to watch he gets a little seam ronnie he picks and chooses slashes and dashes and he cuts back to a hole about as fast as i've seen anybody 74 yards rushing for taylor so far on first down martin out to taylor showing his pass receiving ability gets a couple as they close in on him three lions there he has a quick burst when he has an opening and you know you're always comparing this back to that back you see flashes of number 28 and you see them in the forum of barry across the line now you hate to use those words because barry's done so much and was stood the test of time but you see some of those same exciting moves in freddie taylor second and seven taylor again going up the middle gets about three over the 40-yard line you know the one thing you try to do is strip the ball when you're a defender look look at the guys look at all the hands on the ball these guys are crawling at it you know it's like we're giving you a cat you know you got those little things you dangle in front of the cat and their paws are going like crazy that's money right there baby yeah yeah money and the only way you can win football games is getting that money third down and four right at the 40-yard line of the jaguars martin a little roll and it's complete to mccardell mccardell brings it back into the middle of the field first down at the 49. we haven't heard anything more about mark brunell who's not appeared on the sidelines but we do know x-rays were negative on that ankle and he's apparently still on the ground here down in the training room you know tim this late you come down from detroit and i think any time you come down to play in florida in december it's a great disadvantage these guys right here are sucking air because they're not getting to the quarterback to cause any kind of pressure first down martin going deep the receiver fell down and the ball goes over westbrook's head that was mccartell the intended receiver he just stumbled you know we talk about jamie martin and all the success he's having well the guys up front watch the protection i'm talking about that line right there jacksonville and look at the defensive lineman look look at the rush there's nothing there and if you come down here and you're going to stop jacksonville jaguars obviously it doesn't matter who's a quarterback you've got to be able to pressure the quarterback and that heat factor weighs heavy when you get in the second half of a game jamie martin hit nine in a row before that one taylor taylor what a job by taylor he may have the first down it looked like he was gonna be stopped after four he just keeps his feet churning and then i go back and you look at the guys look at the defensive lineman hanging on taylor and you have to say that you know fatigue is going to set in watch this right here demarco comes out watch them seal that off and then there's the hole and then look at the guys hanging on there's poor shay frederickson they're hanging on and taylor keeps his feet churning and dragging him for an extra few yards third and less than a yard in lions territory taylor taking it wide to the near side and out of bounds at the 23-yard line forced out by terry fair and jeffries plenty hard run for taylor yeah you know what i i like is that when you i'm sure when we came in the league you look at barry sanders on the other side or you look at your idol or you look at the guy you looked up to and what what do you try to do you try to emulate him here he goes to the outside and he's able to burst like you talk about that speed to get around the corner bill well when you come upside outside like that you have force terry fair had force on it outside you've got to keep that outside force you can't get tied up now in the eye formation mcardle in motion back to the ball this is george jones taylor getting a breather george jones the second year man from san diego state who took over last week when taylor went down with his shoulder injury jones had 42 yards on 13 carries against cincinnati be a loss on that of look at the numbers of these two guys today not too shabby on either side i'll take both of them yeah right i'll give you i'll give you a couple trading cards bill and i'll take both of them you could build your team around one or the other martin had to unload the ball intended for mccardell because the blitz came on from frederickson number 53. that's the first that's the first good hit i've seen on martin any kind of pressure to force him here's frederickson he's going to come late on the blitz watch the thing open up he picks his spot and gets right in his face that's really the first shot i've seen on martin today i like how fredrickson kind of just sneaked in there you know he had his head down he ducked through there and got through that hole and opened and opened up wide open so he can hit the quarterback taylor back in jacksonville is five of eight converting on third they have a third and 14. martin calling out protection changes here quick release and incomplete intended for jimmy smith smith turned in the pass was outside may have been a miscue there but it's been a rare one for jamie martin and his receivers as he came in after the second offensive play today to take over for the injured mark brunell so it's fourth down mike hollis comes on they're going to spot the ball at about the 33-yard line closer to the 34. and that's just because he hasn't had a chance to work with these guys martin that's the only reason that he missed that play right there hollis good leg and it is good hollis delivers and the jaguars open it up again 27 to 16 5 46 to go on the third the second field goal of the afternoon to make it 27 to 16. terry fair takes it wide to the left and he's got some room only hollis again and hollis twice now has been able to make the play on terry fair 37-yard return we'll be right back the laws of physics once again terry fair gives detroit great field position and watch this right here these two guys right here come up and attack this is detroit now follow him look at him follow him right there they're gonna come back into the mix and it wants to throw the blocks right here and here that's a heck of a return 37 yards it's out to the 39-yard line sanders not much to string him up hardy the linebacker got him said the words right there tim string them out and for jacksonville they've really done a nice job of it all day when they string it out to the sidelines that's the chorale part we talked about string them out to where their support is outside and corral them and close in on when they do that they've been successful it's when they haven't got that support on the outsides when the corral breaks down when the one of the fence posts gets knocked down and the cattle were running all over the place 175 yards and kickoff returns 193 all together for fair and that was barry sanders 3 000 carry of his career this is 3001. oh there's that's the corral they corralled him in there and then everyone starts taking their shots and then you got hamburger that's right and he only got about a half a yard as it turned out so two carries two yards for gary sanders only two players have carried it that many times we'll see it's there it is get a little barry and get barry in inside the crowd you have to steer them in there though and you have to steer them with force and support there they come they're steering them there it is that's the cowboy and there's the rest of them third down play big one for detroit here batch has time herman moore diving grab yes complete to herman moore it is a catch a late signal from the referee that it is a catch 22 yards on the play bill you talked about who can change the game when we talked about barry sanders but herman moore can also change the game and right here you see him work in the middle of the field excellent throw charlie beth put it where only herman more could catch it boy charlie bratz you can tell when you throw the ball like that there wasn't much separation there from like logan i mean that's confidence you have confidence in yourself and your abilities as a quarterback timeout call by the jaguars you know we we talked about barry and talked about corralling them sometimes you can corral him and corral but every now and then he's going to give you a saddle sore three yards but look what he averages the week after he's held under 50 yards if he's held under 50 yards he bounces back with big numbers and today he's got 96 yards and heck still a lot of time to go hold his fourth quarter 15 carries averaging 6.4 carry today first down sanders slipped that time but he was met there by jose white number 93. now let's get an nfl update from our james brown jb damn look at what carolina's doing one of the few bright spots this year they're wide receivers burling hooking up yes indeed with rocket ismail 40 yard touchdown hey ronnie they're now within a touchdown of san francisco that in the fourth falcons on top of the coach back to tim gill and ronnie oh man he gets on that 49er case with you ronnie i know jb don't worry we don't fall on the pressure second antenna ball batted down and charlie batch are the presence of mind to get a piece of tony brackens worried that he might have that ball fall right in his hands with only the end zone in front of him two smart plays brackens and batch here's the rush here's brackens up top working on robert she takes the inside barry doesn't get a piece of him and there's the tip now watch right here fetch he pulls him down because batch has no idea where that ball is that ball could be hanging up in the air high brackets had time to run up underneath and get it that was heads up on bach's part it's only an incomplete pass as it turns out but it's third and 10 at the 39 of jacksonville batch going deep he's got a man touchdown oh stopped jermaine crowell the rookie had the ball and couldn't hold on and chris hudson excellent job don't give up fighting crowell down to the line down to the field man that was an excellent play by chris hudson there watch this at the end of the play he's not going to give up he's going to keep fighting he lays out right oh he just dropped it he just dropped it just lost possession of that ball he had it in his hands it dropped to his knees and it's a punting situation a lost opportunity for the lions low snap good job by john jett to get it away but barlow takes it at about the 15 and out at the 20. i'm going to tell you something they did a great job of creating this matchup up here to get the double move up top with crowell crowell has thomas beat that's just concentration it looks so simple and so easy he forgot to breal it in look at his head look at his head look at his head see now he tries to go find the ball you got to find the ball at the top like you just talked about look at this charlie badge frustrated by that development the rookie from virginia crowell had a drop last week against pittsburgh came back with a big play on a reverse 2 40 to go in the third on first down taylor for jacksonville not much there not much there but luther ellis that's who was there and not much running room because of luke carell it'll be second about nine and a half from the 20-yard line a little over the 20. you know what happens on the sidelines when play like that happens everyone said did you see that did you see that okay jamie martin continues at quarterback for the injured mark brunell and martin has just been outstanding that's dropped by fred taylor a little too eager when he saw alan aldridge out of the corner of his eye he started to make his move didn't have possession of the ball and i think now you saw two rookies with the balls in their hands and dropped i mean that's i think that's rookie stuff i mean i i think that's you have to focus your mind for an entire 60 minutes for the length of the game you can't ever get lacks because the second you get lacks is when you have plays like that jaguars fans will be happy to know new england's still ahead of pittsburgh in that game this is an inside handoff for taylor breaks of tackle first down frank taylor with a 33-yard line 12-yard pickup i want you to watch the block by the tight end coming down on the linebacker right here pete mitchell watch him come down inside here and get a piece of the linebacker frederick bang right there now see how that frees this up and frederickson can't get outside and taylor's got running room to make his cuts jaguars first and ten all at their own 33-yard line 124 to go in the third they lead 27 to 16. taylor this time stopped at the line of scrimmage by steven boyd the middle linebacker number 57. we mentioned mitchell in one yeah that's a landlord-tenant thing there well that void rents the house of pete mitchell up in detroit that's where he lives he rents a house up there and mitchell owns the house and these guys would go all the way back they're best friends they were college roommates at boston college under coughlin and now they're battling out here on the field for rent that's complete jimmy smith close to the first down about a yard short well you talked about mitchell his brother is living with boy and his brother was sitting there saying you know i'm look look i hope you have a good game boy i hope you don't have any problems this week and he's like look will you just leave i know you're rooting for your brother pete he said hey blood's thicker than water right he says i understand that it's okay i don't know you'd have to have something on the game what about this month's rent yeah well you know i think maybe they do they just don't want to admit it third down and less than a yard this is taylor taylor breaks a tackle again keeps on trucking down to the 46-yard line bill you talked about december running the ball and they are running it well and i also talked about december coming to florida and i think you get tired when you're a defense you come to florida watch 50 feet fredericton he has taylor in the backfield right here look nothing and i think that's due to playing all the time and going and going and you're out there on the field playing in this heat and humidity you're not used to it in december well that's the end of the third quarter in jacksonville with a score that jags 27 alliance 16. fox nfl sunday continues after this way accepted way except for the first two plays because that's when mark grinnell went down with a sprained ankle on play two and he completes for a first down here to jimmy smith inside the 25. you know we talked about coming down here in miami into florida coming down here and how hard it is for a team because we talked about the pass rush i don't care who's playing quarterback if you can sit back you can get one two three four five look and still nobody around them ronnie i don't know how well you throw the ball but you got that at a time you can throw it pretty darn well jamie martin connects again a 22-yard gain and this is taylor taylor is carried 25 times and that gain of two will give them 136 yards in this game a career high and a team record bill you know what you said something there and also what i saw there was a linebackers coming in coming up sucking up and when you run the ball like that that's what happens the linebackers fly up and they open up the middle of the field running the football opens up passing games it's not bothering fred taylor of course he's from florida they stack them up that time a flag comes down late on the second and eight play larry nimmers our referee will sort this out from his team of officials a little help from the coach yeah it looks like you're going to get a little face mask personal foul 15-yard face mask gets the defense number 73 we'll that happens because you're tired when you're tired you do things where you reach with your hands you don't play discipline football you fatigue and bill you you know that being in that situation you're just reaching for anything when you're getting pounded on that's exactly what's happening to them they are getting pounded by the rush and also not being able to rush the passer at the 11 yard line a first down jacksonville a must-win situation for detroit and they're up against it here taylor again a big hole up that tackle touchdown that's the same play they scored on before you get coleman outside tilsky around big block by the sofa and lead up with zach crockett second touchdown of the game for taylor and the jaguars without mark brunell about to put away the detroit lions barring some serious comebacking by charlie bach and barry sanders and company hollis for the point after and it's good jacksonville 34 detroit 16 with 13-13 still to play in the fourth taylor a brilliant day-to-day 11-yard touchdown run 80 yards in nine plays taking four and a half minutes off the clock from detroit now desperate here 13 13 to go in regulation time alice's kickoff taken at the 15-yard line by tommy vardell and vardell gets it up to the 39. kind of funny they've conceded to kick into fair they say heck with it we're not even going to kick them anymore watch the blocking here on a touchdown first of all they get the push right here on luthor ellis the double team then look outside right there that's a big block by coleman and also the sofa ben coleman who said i don't mind going in a left tackle for the injured tony boselli i think i can play there he's had a little bit of experience there before coleman had a big block knocking fredericton off the line and also damon jones a tight end sealed off and he brought in zach crockett to lead it up coleman was a left tackle at wake fourth and played a little there for arizona he's got a good job batch squirts out of there a flag is down he connects with moore herman moore with a move moore spins his way inside the 30 but a flag back in the backfield a 33-yard play what a play by charlie batch you know the reason he had time to make that play and duck and dive and squirm around back there i believe they're bringing this thing back for a holding call detroit's saying no five yard face mask against the defensive team number 75. prior to the pass penalty has declined first down yeah that must have been on the mask of charlie it must have been before the pass it must have been on batch right here look at the awareness look at the feet look at the feet that's what i like about him if you watch his feet how he's able to keep his balance in there and then come out of there and find find her and more well we didn't see the face mask but it's declined nonetheless and they have a first down in jacksonville territory barry sanders squirts his way down to the 22. now some more action at the carolina game let's take you to james brown tim and bill tell ronnie ooh look at carolina berlin hands off to bianca patooka nice hold on the left side of the line stiff arms merton heights we've got a tie ball game in carolina at 28 and atlanta right now still holding to a seven-point lead briscoe was trying to make his game one of the falcons not right now tim bill and ronnie biak patooka in for freddie lane who they suspended harry sanders over the 100 mark he's got the ball again this time they get him behind the line and that was brian schwartz number 58. that ankle grab pretty interesting three plays detroit needs to get back into it what do you get you got a big one to herman moore and you come back two other times to barry sanders this time they look there there's the corral they see all the turquoise jerseys out there third down they need four 76 times he's been over a hundred brilliant barry huge play detroit this is ron rivers and he has stopped at the 20. yeah and the draw play i i think you're in four down territory though now i mean you're down this far you know you're down here inside the red zone fourth and about three you might as well go for it watching settling for field goals isn't doing anything it's all you've hit so far this game has been field goal i don't think there's any doubt nobody's moved from the sideline they're gone and they need a long three morton crowell moore three wide receivers they spread four out there the tight end david sloan joining them in the slot batch touchdown what a catch for herman moore and a perfect strike and the lions get themselves back in at a 20-yard touchdown strike patch to moore 10 43 still remains and they're gonna go for two you know what i like about that they said heck with a three-yard first down it's easy to say that bill when you got hurt yeah and you know what there was some there were some defenders around that ball too but that's the confidence charlie batch has in not only himself and his arm but herman moore two-yard attempt to a point attempt pardon me sanders goes in motion quarterback draw they wanted it but it was read by jacksonville brackens made the tackle that's the play they started to do at the other end a while ago with sanders in motion back in the first half yeah jacksonville wasn't fooled at all look at the pressure right here they get the safety up in there darius donovan donovan darius with darius he made the play right here you can see herman moore go up and just take the ball but bill we talked about big plays are made by big players in december i'll tell you what you're thinking about big plays and big players go back to that drop pass of jermaine crawl hanson's kickoff high taken by logan at the four logan takes it back into the middle of the field and he's dumped at about the 27-28 yard line 25-yard return mike logan if you have this catch right here yeah different game right now that was jermaine crowell a rookie from virginia dropping it in the end zone back in the third quarter bill you talked about 30 to 34 games yeah you talked about playoffs look at this right here if you see on the screen that's the thing that you mentioned every game is a playoff game and everybody's got to make big plays new orleans is battling dallas right now and a close one detroit can't afford a loss arizona's got a win out jacksonville ball again if you join us along the way jamie martin is the quarterback for the injured mark brunell injured on the second play of the game sprained ankle no fracture and martin's done a wonderful job in relief taylor gets a couple there jamie martin was six of 11 in his only action this season in spot duty here and there through the first 12 games playing like a veteran he is a five-year man but has not had a whole lot of game experience second down and 10 a little more than 10. straight drop for martin martin just gets it off the policeman taylor and taylor runs away from tacklers and gets about nine ron rice finally got him nothing's easy when taylor's got the ball bill we talked about corral but we need a lasso for this guy yeah look at it look over here ronnie the detroit bench they got the cool zones blowing on these guys they're they're in the sun they're baking in the sun on this side now you talk about home field advantage look at the jaguars over here they're sitting there in a nice cool shade relaxed no sun working on them and you talked about the home field stuff with the clock and the tall grass and that's home cooking that's whole these guys are bacon these guys are the ones that are cooking and then on the other side yeah thing is if you invite them to play at pontiac silver dome you don't give them any cold weather they're indoors you can't retaliate with the weather in michigan if you want to try and freeze your opponents from the south on third down and about two taylor squirms for a first down this guy right here i mean we've used the corral analogy with barry sanders but so far they haven't been able to corral this guy friends fred taylor fred taylor what i like is the second effort we've seen that all day today's second effort 150 yards now ronnie and i don't think anyone really realizes how fast he is you know we thought we saw a tampa game here and i think they were shocked at how fast he was it's his best ever performance and it's the best by any running back for the jaguars in their short history this is george jones getting a run second year man from san diego state jaguars have been without three of their starters since the beginning of this game rudel we mentioned going down of course tony boselli didn't start at all because of an ankle injury damon shelton the fullback went down early in the first quarter with an ankle injury so this has been a gutty and good performance showing the depth tom coughlin has here on his nine and three afc central leaders under the eight-minute mark we go 34-22 jacksonville second and 12. jones again jones has some running room and a first down jaguars pushed out by jeffries at the 42 of detroit and i really believe and i'm i don't want to continue to dwell on it but to me the detroit lions defense just looks weary well you know what's funny i went for a run yesterday bill and i could feel that humidity i could feel the heat and as you talked about it's hot down there and yeah i know you keep putting emphasis on it but it's true that's what's killing this team right now the heat in the second half jacksonville is averaging almost seven yards to carry i think that shows how worn down this heat has got detroit lions defense 21-yard gain good block by the wide receiver jimmy smith on the last play and there's taylor shaking another tackle he gets about seven on that run i'll tell you the scroggins gets i'll tell you another thing interesting about this league ronnie and how december comes around and two weeks ago jacksonville loses to pittsburgh up in pittsburgh got beat real bad right and then they come back home and they're sitting there on thanksgiving and they're cheering for the detroit lions to beat pittsburgh you know they're like yeah go yeah get them get a coin toss all that hit pit parade and then they come down here and now they've got to battle them again and try to make a stance well it's not much of a thank you is it to the lions for getting that win for them we're beating them up and this is taylor beating them up some more down to the 22-yard line i think my point being more than anything is just how it doesn't matter i mean they go to pittsburgh they lose to pittsburgh detroit beats pittsburgh and then detroit comes down here and look at this seven yards of pop or more in the second half jacksonville is just handing it to him boom boom bang all these defenders laying on the ground when your defenders are on the ground and everybody else offensively still up that shows your tire and what you do is you put i'm gonna tell you right now i'm putting fred taylor on the bench i'm putting him on the bench because we're gonna need him those next three games steven boyd on the detroit sideline injured on the last play or maybe just gasping for rare that bill has been describing here a hard-working linebacker leaves everything out there that guy's playing with a bad troll already well it must be really bad because he's a guy to down to chris fieldman molten he wouldn't let chris spielman see him doing that first down this is jones jones with a nice hole powered from behind pulled down near the 10. and that play went right up the middle that's where boyd was and now he's coming back onto the field and he's just walking out there he's not charging back out there to the huddle he's walking back out there and that and that's where stephen floyd was that's his home right there in the middle of the watch here here's where it comes right up the middle that's where the ball comes that's the reserve linebacker richard jordan number 99 trying to make the play and jones went right by him yeah jordan gets blocked by demarco so it's first and goal from the 10. jacksonville impressive drive here with five minutes to go jones again caught in the backfield this time that is ellis lutheral is coming up with a tackle there's there's a temperature today but more importantly look look at the jacksonville yards okay right here here they're the russian yards and now list is where they're all coming third quarter fourth quarter and this is where they're wearing down that temperature early on is taking them out of the second half still in the mid 70s started in the 80s and the game began still plenty warm here second down and long this is jones again trying to get to the near side and good defensive job that time by the lions coming out to get him west brook ain't have only about a yard jacksonville has not rushed the ball any better this season than they have today well you talk about running the football in december and this is what tom coughlin wants to wear a team down because in december you've got to be able to grind tough yards out you know that that that's a sign of a powerful offense when you just line up and march down the field by running the ball such as they've done on this drive right now this is a heck of a drive by jacksonville it's making a statement 194 yards on the ground trying to get it to jones on a little screen pass and the lions were all coming right into those lanes bill you talked about the statement i think the statement is this is that they know where denver stands they know that denver is the team that they're going to probably have to beat to go to the super bowl and the statement is this if we're going to beat denver we got to run the football well a lot of similarities on that offensive big strong offensive line quality tight end pete mitchell excellent receivers outside and smith and mcardle and of course their quarterback went healthy mark burnell is every bit as good as john elway is at this point stage in his career alice with two field goals already today tries from 30 yards away and it is good so he is three for three today 37-22 the lead let me take that a step further they also have a quarterback in jamie martin that's a lot like bubby brisker how does it feel to drive bill 52 yards alice's 30-yard field goal 61 yards and 12 plays kickoff rolls into the end zone and right through 7 21 taking off the clock so precious to detroit 3 15 to go jacksonville in control without you vaseli shot back hey last year we were 2-0 without you on first down charlie batch intended at the right side left side pardon me for morton and that is incomplete so in other words the jaguars when bacilli's not there are going to be six and one and when brunel's not there they're 3-0 and you know what that's good i like that that's that's that's depth and what that is that's good coaching that's good coaching palmer the offensive coordinator geron the defensive coordinator and coughlin the head coach second and ten they're in overtime there san francisco carolina batch rush had to unload quickly trying to get it to the tight end david sloane incomplete i think if you were going to tell the jacksonville jaguars two areas they needed to improve on in december to get them through the playoffs it's getting after the quarterback and running the football consistently to give their offense total balance and if that is a stepping stone today they've made one heck of a jump in both those aspects third and ten for charlie batch 306 to go jacksonville headed to a 10-3 mark leading the afc central batch forced up into the pocket hits david sloane for a first down to the 32-yard line another very professional move by charlie batch 13-yard pickup lions have all of their timeouts remaining a little bit low intended for stabilizing brian stablion and it is incomplete into the dirt jacksonville has too many guys on the field flag down out on the far side and so the hurry up caught jacksonville on a personnel change and it cost them the defense had too many men in the field that's a five yard penalty repeat first down that's over the 200 mark passing today at 205. well there it is right here so you're trying to hustle off the field because they rotate those linemen around so much that's eric curry they weren't sure who was on there there's a guy right there too that was jose white so they're rotating the defensive lineman and when they went no huddle no one knew how many they had out there sanders cuts it back inside gets a couple to the 40. two and a half to go here with another flag down on that play the defense i think he got it again again had two main men in the field they sure did that's a five yard penalty and the five yard will result in the first down barry sanders and herman moore will do that to you yeah you're trying to get 12 on see if you can get away with it with an extra man on the field so it's a first down the sad part of that one was there was nobody rushing up they they huddled up with 12. yep first down now at the 43-yard line of detroit the ball never came up and that brings one two three four flags count him false start offense number 64. five-yard penalty jeff harding's right they had a penalty for too many men on the field so then there's a timeout in the field and then they come back up again and they line up with the same thing there's 12 of them see these two guys right here there's too many well you see what bonnie's point is is that you know you need 12. you know you don't want to let this game get away from you when you got weapons like sanders and herman moore facing you that one off the market intended for morton from charlie batch it'll be second and fifteen that guy right there deserves more you know he's been the catalyst for this team for a lot of years and not everybody else is pulling their own weight over 100 yards today over 3 000 carries for a career occurred in this game today match trying to get it down he does that's complete to crowell jermaine crowell trying to break loose and gets inside the 20 to about the 17. donovan darius made the tackle 46-yard play boy i'll tell you detroit calls the timeout here that's a nice catch man i mean a nice catch nice move and and when you think about crowell bill you talk about talent i mean here's a guy we think this is really the future of this team yeah sure you sure doing boy batch had somebody hanging on him when he was throwing that ball and it came up a little short crowell stopped threw on the brakes realizing it was short and came back to the ball but bats he steps up here and just as he throws this ball he's got people draped on him right here so the ball is under thrown and then downfield good awareness by coral this time i might add good awareness this time oh where the ball is and he comes back to the ball to make the catch you know what's interesting we talked about we talked about moore and we talked about sanders and crowell you know johnny morton hasn't had a catch since early in the first quarter i think yeah you know that is interesting because johnny morton has been really the catalyst and been the consistency of this group first down lions batch for tommy fardel they couldn't hold on as he took the hit that was from westbrook from mike logan pardon me the other 32. jacksonville 32 mike logan good hit broke up the pass well today coming next on fox i look at katarina vin in a different light now and not going there second and ten flags again some movement along the line hmm a different light you'll still be watching the program now that spotlight follows her around i know this it's going to be a great show it will be a great show i like todd eldridge international team challenge figure skating next on fox you mentioned barry sanders going over the 3 000 carry mark in his career only two other players frank o'hara's and marcus allen carried the ball more than barry sanders batch on second and 15. try to get it to herman moore too well covered by the linebacker kevin hardy to hold on to that ball for the detroit lions you know they needed this win to keep their hopes alive for the playoffs and obviously it doesn't look like that's going to happen but it's a team that made a change bobby ross made that change and some probably thought boy he's selling the season out early maybe he's calling it quits on the season but everybody in the close to the organization the coaches and players as well believe that that move from mitchell to bats was the right move for this football team batch from the blitz he alludes that pumps once takes the hit and throws it away that was brackens getting the tackle on him finally we've reached the two minute warning 155 on the clock jacksonville 37 detroit 22. fox nfl sunday is brought to you by miller go and in this cat fight here in jacksonville with jaguars about to head to their 10th victory fourth down last gasp for the lions of detroit bats will not get the pass away yet another sack and that is ronaldo wins and bryce pop in there as well to create that thing and i'll tell you that's the two areas i i really feel that jacksonville improved on that's the fifth jacksonville shack and that's by far the high for the year in one game right there bryce gets a piece of him and then ronaldo win gets the push up the middle that's that's when pass rush is effective when you get the outside rush and then the inside push yeah bill you talked about the push there but bryce pop when he puts his hand down in the dirt he's as good as any of the guys that play in the national football league coming off the corner and they've allowed him this game to rush more than they have in the past and i think if you want to pass rush on a consistent basis you have to rush bryce pogba jacksonville takes over the football more yardage for freddie taylor before he's driven back after a gain of about six and it was kerwin waldrop who put the hit on him and what a job by this team today you know tom coughlin talks about running the football and controlling the line of scrimmage in december it's no secret why look at this look at the past super bowl winners look at the record in december right here and if you think back about all these teams they all had one thing in common they could grind it out when they had to today jacksonville doing that without tony moselli their left tackle without mark grinnell or quarterback went down on the second play of the game without their blocking fullback damon shelton and so they have been impressive on both sides of the ball despite those personnel losses but that guy right there coughlin he told us he says you know what even though we played well last week i came in with the pressure down my foot on the pedal i'm gonna keep the pressure on this football team leon cersei is right tackle said it was about seven on the richter scale a speech after the laws of pittsburgh those guys expect to uh to hear him get noisy uh when they don't play up to what he believes they're capable of and there were no complaints about his his speech they just said you know hey that's tom we deserved it and we got it big time freddie taylor has well over 180 yards rushing right now 183 yards rushing on the day for fred taylor that's outstanding rookie of the year well what do you what do you think rookie dear he just went over the thousand-yard mark for for running backs he just went to a thousand and four and he's as good a candidate as anyone out there he's as good as moss jacksonville will use up the rest of this we're down to the 52nd mark congratulations to jamie martin with a great fill-in job another solid performance by charlie batch but they were outmanned today by the jacksonville jaguars let me tell you this though ronnie you know moss was this kind of spot player he come in on third down situation three wide receiver sets and he didn't get a start till jay green went down this guy was starting after stewart went down he's done an outstanding job when he's healthy yeah i like this kid and the thing that i like about him we talked about his second effort but what i also like about him he's getting another giving another dimension to the jacksonville jaguar they wanted their running game to come alive well fred taylor answered the call so do the offensive line in front of him you can see jermaine crowell congratulating fred taylor two outstanding rookies in the nfl this year that taylor had quite a day as did jamie martin as we said so jacksonville now moves to ten and three atop the afc central i think the biggest concern has to be for the health of mark brunell they're one game away from division title 37-22 and we'll have our post-game show with jb and company coming up you stay with us here on fox for ronnie lott and bill moz i'm tim ryan saying so long the final score jacksonville 37 detroit 22.
