[Music] [Applause] my band leader for the last 35 years take about rad dude take a bow radoo band leader and personal trainer to the star huh at leader and personal trainer yeah okay you know uh this woman's been with us many many many times here on the big program and it's always a pleasure when she is here she's beautiful talented actress and she's written a book i have a copy of it right here take a look at the mug on this take a look at that look at her look at how beautiful that is there she is okay the book is entitled some of me here she is the ever-charming isabella rossolini [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] welcome back to the uh the program how you doing i'm doing very well now a big star like yourself a big international star i like to think of you as international just international you know person like yourself you have the summer off don't you you can take the summer off to whatever the hell you want you can go water skiing you can go golfing whatever you want to do right yes but i go to italy oh well there you go where are you going when you're in i'm going mostly to rome or nearby rome because my cousins are there rome is the eternal city eternal yeah do you like going to rome do i like wandering in rome do you like going to rome oh do i like um yeah no i do i i do and i don't what was that italian do people leave you alone when you go to rome no not so much that's the part yes that's the part that it's hard because they regard you as of them as one of theirs don't they yes yeah well yes i guess so and i i learned too many people that i mean there are very a lot of famous people in italy but not too many that have an international career so that i they're particularly proud of them yeah well as well they should be and you know i'm proud of you myself i had nothing to do with it uh now when you go there do you do you eat yourself silly oh do i um sometimes i do yeah architects are the truth jokes i love yeah but artichokes are not you know they're not you want pasta i want something sloppy and fat well no yes no i do but artichokes it's the only thing that i stayed so nostalgic of italy like when i moved here i was very nostalgic of italy after 10 years you know new york became little pretty much my city but then there was one thing that i kept on being nostalgic is the artichokes they're different and they're very good there and they're not so good here the artichokes in italian artichokes are better than american artichokes exactly and what is the difference just in the taste and the size they are small and tender you can eat them raw really with olive oil in here if you try to eat them you can just eat the tip you know you have to like go like that now i know that artichokes here you have to you have to like cook them you have to boil them for about a uh an hour an hour at least yeah and then you can't eat it and then it's a lot of this way like yes and then there is all the the hair i feel like a chipmunk because yeah and then you finally you get to the heart and it's all hairy no you know it's fibrous now you're saying the italian artichokes are actually hairy but i believe they're in this country they're fibrous oh that's how you say it looks like a beard or something again i haven't eaten an italian artichoke so i don't i'll take your word for it but they're they're damn good aren't they now do do see i'm so dumb here i don't know do artichokes they on trees on the bushes on no they grow uh on the ground going to have a bigger place no no no no no no no no they are out of the ground right they're not in under but they're low they're a little plant yeah yeah uh i've only been to rome once many many many many years ago and i'm telling you something uh you just as you stumble around rome from from one little piazza to another you just realize of course that you're surrounded by uh history and antiquity at every turn and you think i wish i had paid attention in in high school history classes me too yeah me too i know and i i'm from there but i still i i there are so many beautiful things and i feel very confused about history it's hard to go to school yeah did they ever get the coliseum finished that's what my daughter said when i packed on top i tell my to my children you have to come to italy this incredible city 3000 years old it was an empire and you still see the ruin of the palaces and this and that and they came and they looked they said it's all broken up they were terribly disappointed it's very sweet though very charming there so you'll spend the entire summer there no just about just visiting okay all right let's talk about the about the book uh uh here a bit this is some of me and uh what what does that mean some of me what is suggested there because i don't tell everything just a little bit but is it all true no on top of it is many lies so i'm discreet that's great i like that so you just make things up to make your life seem more interesting more fascinating or give us an example of something in the book that you wrote that's not true um well first of all i think it at home they always say that i'm a liar or that i exaggerate or i think you know for fun or to do things so that's one way i lie but the way i chose to lie in the book i'll give you an example i wanted to give the impression of how it is to pose for a photographer because the people think you stand there just pretty you just wait pretty they photograph you and you send home with a million dollars you know it doesn't say you have to do something not much but a little bit and so i it was richard avedon that taught me what i to do i had trouble with this guy by the way oh you did i had a lot of trouble with this guy you did yeah he photographed he he wanted to have oh let's have fun and i didn't you know i didn't want to have fun but i'm more obedient [Applause] i obeyed it no i didn't we didn't get along no and the picture turned out horribly it was an ugly ugly not that you know i'm not exactly uh paul newman but uh you know i come on so anyway you tell your story i'll tell my story you get a show i'll come on and tell my story so richard avedon said to me um think of something and i started to think of something and he said i don't like what you think change your thoughts or i change my thought because i'm very obedient and you're not but i am so i changed my thoughts then i said i was changing my thinking i said how does he know what i'm thinking i'm going to go back to what i think i thought before to see if he can catch me he did catch me he said don't think i told you not to think so i need to that my thought again and then when he was his 70th birthday i sent him a tape and i just stared at the tape and i just thought happy birthday he called me and he said thank you so much for your wishes he can read thoughts that's one lie and then further on in the book wait wait wait wait that's a lie yes it is the whole thing's alive a little bit oh that's great just a little bit that's terrific that's a great story well a little bit of it is a line a little bit of it is true you can see when you change your expression he doesn't know what you think but i make believe he does to make him better now coincidentally the same thing happened to me almost exactly the same experience when i had my picture taken by crescent [Laughter] how's your family how are your kids they're doing very well how many do you have i have two are you married right now no uh you've been married though oh i've been married twice you've been married twice now can we say who you were married to i was married first to martin scorsese and then to jonathan wiedemann with whom i have a daughter actually he's here with me oh that's that's nice and you know you can just say and you were also married to elvis i can say that yeah i can't why about being very difficult i can't say that and i was married to him and i was married to you once yeah but seriously what would elvis eat for breakfast well this was difficult oh man you're smelling great you smell like a million damn dollars as always uh should we show some pictures out of the book here oh look at this look at this what's going on there well this is a lancome ad and it was the first time that they allowed i have a chipped tooth because my brother threw a telephone at me when i was 12 and he broke my tooth now that's a lie but i have no noise the truth that's the truth and the other truth is that i have my i have never had a cavity so when they say you have to fix that tooth i say you fix the tooth and you give me something you know how you mistrust doctors right so i haven't done anything about my tooth and lancome at the beginning or when i was a model they used to take the wax from the undertakers and put it behind my teeth too so that i looked like a perfect smile and this was the first picture where they didn't use the wax from the undertaking and that's some picture that's some face man that that's really a knockout very nice that alone this picture alone is worth the price of the book you know what i'm saying you ought to sell it oh yeah you got to sell a lot of these boys i hope so yeah uh it's are you going to do some of those book signings i didn't i did did you enjoy that um it's a little bit scary it goes very fast yeah people come in and they lean on you and breathe on you and stuff no until i feel you know you just say hello hello and then another person hello hello hello and you just feel like some of them are going to get mad at you and say well say more than that right you know yeah but they were well behaved yes i would think they would be yes one of these days you and i should go to italy do you think that would be fun yeah well get us a car and drive around get like a ford taurus or something drive around oh but it's great to drive there it would be a lot of fun no it would it would uh anything else you want to mention no okay thank you very much thank you thank you very much thank you thank you for having me we'll be right back with dave chabel
