if you're gonna run with the big dogs there's only one place to be [Music] and [Music] the world center of Speed Daytona International Speedway getting ready for its biggest weekend getting ready for the sports biggest weekend the Daytona 500 hello everybody I'm Ken Squier and it's 24 hours and Counting to the commencement of the 38th annual Daytona 500 and on this program with CBS we're going to be showing you how the field was composed the Gatorade 125 from this past Thursday and talking about the potential candidates to win this thing with my colleagues joining us for the first time the 1980 winner of this race at the fastest speed ever 177 miles an hour Buddy Baker and of course Ned Jerry so let's talk about these 125 s for just a moment gentlemen what are these 125 s means of the drivers I think it means a lot one time I was on the pole here and I decided I would not run the 125 because the car was so dominant I didn't run the 125 s I didn't have any idea what the car we're doing the 500 and believe you me I paid for not running the 125 s and learning what the chassis needed Ned yeah you learn how to set that chassis up because most of the time you think of Daytona of speed just outright speed because they run you know 190 miles an hour here but the chassis on race day and the 500 is very very important so you can learn a lot from that race well one thing we've learned here is that the man in black is definitely back Dale Earnhardt has won the pole in grand style we saw him when the IROC race out here the other day he looks formidable he's won 28 races now at Daytona but he still has the Daytona 500 to look forward to that certainly is a big story this weekend but equally big is a man who can go into the history books as no one has ever gone before and Mike joy is standing by with Sterling Marlin now Sunday Sterling Marlin will try to do it's never been done before win three consecutive Daytona 500s but I don't see a whole lot of pressure around this team well wall pretty loose relaxed you know we're just gonna do the same things we've done the past two years down here and got the same car the same agent same crew guys and I wouldn't have a good time his car has been passed all week but are you still the fastest car here I don't know it's probably through pool cars that you know are pretty full of three in some of the hinders cars a Yanks car too so it's just going you'll come down who's in front when you need to when you need to make your run and y'all thank you five car if we're in the lead and the cars handling good would pretty much dictate you know what's gonna happen then but we get behind get tied you push this could be kind of tough everybody's talked to all week about how you need a partner that Monty Hall could win the Daytona 500 cuz he'll make a deal and somebody will go with him I haven't seen a lot of people want to draft with you that you're out there kinda by yourself well I guess it felt like y'all cars is good they don't we don't need any help and but you know uh we've done some drafting and Terry Labonte seems to work good with us and Michael Waltrip so uh it's just hard to say high school come down you comes down a deal like last year and ten laps ago the caution comes out if you're leading what you do do you pit stay out I don't know it so it's a lot of variables that that can happen so just hopefully we're in position to be there to win the race all right Sterling Marlin goes for three in a row Sunday let's join dick Berggren it's been a hundred and thirty nine races since Kenny Schrader has won but you've got a whole new situation and the car looks good is it good enough to be able to win with it was good in the class you know it qualified good we set the 500 car up just like the class car so we're looking forward to 125 s I mean we're kind of gonna sit there and ride and see what happens when it's time whole new situation with your team a new crew chief most of the players who had been with you are gone you've got all new people with you now how long does it take to get the communication in line so that you can be ready to win races well most the time I think it takes quite a while in a situation like that but a lot of us here I've been doing doing this for a while Phil Hammerman crew chief has been working with ray for a couple years now we're going off Ray's outline and notes and set up some stuff I've been to the racetracks before so I don't think it's gonna take near as long as uh it's like starting up a whole new team or something well the three Hendrick cars tried and team up and try to beat everybody else are you gonna go this with whoever you can go you kind of do whatever you got to until it comes time to the last straw you know the last last lap and then you got to do whatever is best for you David Hobbs the restrictor plate racing has been made even more difficult this year by take away that compression ratio the pickups were some looking at some of the drafting it looks like it's real difficult to get by people have you been finding it it is real difficult to get by somebody's got a you know really get out of shape or something and you need a lot of friends out there so I hope there's a lot of people I like Kmart and Little Caesars and one free pizza or something afterwards because I'm they can follow him behind me and they're sure to get one well times are those friends aren't there on those last bicycle laps I'll remember him and I'll take their names but nah I mean you last lap you're on your own anyway you lose all those friends that you had the first 40 sick class John Andretti fast enough back to you Ken John Andretti a dark horse to do what his uncle did down here what tiny alum did Derek Colt Sterling Marlin win the 500 in their very first time out as a winner in Winston Cup racing let's take a look at how the field is put together for the Sunday 502 fastest qualifiers in that pole position qualifying day may make it into the field and then these 125 s they really tell the story they take 14 from each of the races and then they go back to qualifying times for positions 31 to 38 they're eight positions left for those who did have fast qualifying times that maybe had problems in 125-mile qualifying races so they can get in that way and then there are four provisional spots for those who were in the top 40 and the car under point standings at the end of 1995 and then there is one provisional for a former Winston Cup champion and one former Winston Cup champion had to use that provisional to start 43rd more on that before we're through okay for the drivers the 125s what do you learn what does it mean well you learn one thing you learn what the car is going to do in a long run and you really I mean you get so much data from the 125 that you can use and apply for the 500 but you've got to remember there's people in the 125 they don't make the race on their speed when they qualify desperation time for them they have to get in the top 14 now all week long actually for the first time that I can ever recall at NASCAR we saw four training periods stopped because the drafting got so intense they were going three one time four wide into turn number one just in practice you thought they were getting paid for it out there Ned yeah they were very aggressive of course what they were trying to do was to see how their cars would work in the draft I think it's more important this year than we've seen in a long time NASCAR has mandated that the engines used in these cars where they use restrictor plates like here at Daytona and Talladega that they only have 14 to one compression ratio engine reduced the horsepower about 50 cut the speeds about four miles an hour here that brought the whole people closer together and so the drafting is so important so let me ask you Baker make you more nervous everybody in there together one big cluster I don't think so these are good race car drivers you got to remember the last place guy in this race it's probably a champion somewhere on a local track so they're working their way into the biggest race of all times the American race as we call it and the 500 it means so much of these guys listen this is a big show for them to make it into the great American race that's what this show is all about the Gatorade 125s upcoming here on CBS all the action that really established the field for the running of this great American race stand by hope you enjoy it right here on CBS CBS sports presentation of the Gatorade 125 is sponsored by Gatorade thirst quencher the official sports beverage of NASCAR the all-new Ford f150 strength after strength after strength and by Budweiser official sponsor of the 1996 US Olympic team this Bud's for you overcast day here at Daytona temperature low 70s humidity 66% a little bit of a breeze but not that much as we get set for the first 125-mile qualifier let's go trackside with Mike joy McCann Dale Earnhardt's won eight of these races he's the one guy in this race who doesn't have to run for a starting spot Sunday so what will you be trying to learn in a hundred 25 miles here Dale they backed out front for 50 laps the car is working pretty good in the last practice we ran it and we feel good about it I try to keep that streak of six six straight alive in go for seventh so it's just a build-up for the 500 tune up and try to get the car right and find out a little bit about here does this car run much differently if it's in the draft and when it's out front it likes it out front and so does its driver the one thing they've been trying to work on this morning based on the weather is how much of this front end you leave taped off you don't want the car to overheat but you want a lot of that air making downforce on the nose let's go across the front of the starting grid David Hobbs well another man who likes to lead is Dale Jarrett last week twice in the Busch clash from the back to the front a desk are they strong cars very good this is a brand new car here and I think it's a little better than what we had last Sunday Robert Doug Yates give me great engine so hope I don't have to come from the back we can stay up here in the front yesterday afternoon Ricky Rudd expressed some dissatisfaction with some of the driving in the big free-for-all drafting session at the end of the day you finding this well it seems that a lot of the cars are running the same speed maybe we've got some guys in there that maybe aren't using their heads quite as much as they should hopefully that will take place today that they'll use their heads a little bit more and realize they've got to finish this to get into the Daytona 500 well a little bit of doubt there as we go back to camp starting grid first Gatorade 125 the pole going for his seventh straight twin 125 victory Dale Earnhardt and alongside the winner of last Sunday's push splash Dale Jarrett row to two-time defending Daytona 500 champion Sterling Marlin and Robert Pressley Row three former winner in the 125 Terry Labonte and Kenny Wallace row for a three-time winner in these races Bill Elliott and Michael Waltrip row five the rookie Johnny Benson jr. and Jimmie Spencer row six a former one 2500 Jeff foot ion and Wally Dallenbach juniors row 7 that's Bobby Hamilton at Kyle Petty in row eight he 101 25 back in 1976 Dave Marcus and Ward Burton bro 9 is Park Martin and Bobby hill and jr. in row 10 it's Steve Seligman in Lake speed row 11 Bobby Labonte and Mike Wallace Murrow 12 a five-time winner in these 125 s Darrell Waltrip and Hut Stricklin row 13 Brentford I'm and Delma Cowan getting ready for the first Gatorade 125 with 26 cars coming to the line 14 drivers in each 125 transferred to Sunday's 500 in starting spots three through 30 Earnhardt already in the race and Ernie Irvan who lead them down in the second Gatorade 125 spotters are already up on the roof and they're going to get a workout today and those clouds may give us a bit of a workout a few sprinkles reported down and turn number one but not enough to turn this one off here we go 50 laps 125 miles Bernhard and Jarrett to bring him down to the bottom out here in 93 [Music] in turn art got a great story yeah always tells a great transition when they take off you see it's got about a lead over Jarrett going down in the corner they'll didn't have any helpful the back bumper and Sterling Marlin was right up there behind him and say Jarrett's still out there by himself his carry the body goes under into third goes my body here comes Presley now the bottom of that green and white number 33 field away and here comes Sterling Marlin to the bottom to try to lead this first lap and here comes Terry Labonte he's following ball ball of rock through there try to get back to the bottom it looks like he made his spot right back in there he's back in line again Earnhardt is three wide into the tribal as they come across with Marlin out in front Labonte in second Earnhardt in third and it's Kenny Wallace down in the bottom making his move in the number 81 at blue and yellow car Presley in the middle and Dale Jarrett falls back into their clutches top three single file and they pussyfoot away from the rest of the field that bunch back there in fifth well that that's the way they were looking in practice here the yesterday afternoon and there were a lot of nervous people they had look at they have four wide down the back straightaway somebody's gonna have to get out of this group yeah three watts tough enough to go through these turns let alone four they do get down to three wide back there in the pack they're filling it in the 94 if they come down the homestretch tight grunting but those front three are the story half the moment tell you who's making the move was that 43 car Bobby Hamilton down on the bottom we found that pole got himself about six pots brought three here's how they're deployed Marley here you see Texas Terry Labonte in second and Earnhardt riding third Bobby Hamilton continuing to fly in at Pontiac and Robert Pressley convinces to go back he got caught in the middle and has not been able to get out of it and that 71 car Dave Marcus who won a 125 back in 76 brand new sponsor brand new out looking great engine he's making a race out of this and leading this pack his pal petty everybody's wondering how the Pontiac is gonna work in traffic you can see it's going quite well well they've single filed in that second batch and they're currently the first three working lap number four of 50 and the first 125 and Dale Jarrett defined he catches the top he finally got single file and he's moving back up in the first three and that's exactly he came through a terror and came off that second turn and just closed him down take himself up through traffic here he is closing right back in on third place he really does not have any help he moves up on the far right by himself single file big freight train Daytona choo-choo through the tri-oval 15 degrees and out headed down into turn number one and Jarrett's right back in this thing for Robert Lee they Bernhard ran a 4773 that's the elapsed time around the track they learn how they'll carry ran a 47 47 about the speed that Earnhardt qualified at but he was in the draft coming up on him makes a big difference there you see that front group holding on to that fourth spot now that looks like Jimmy Spencer making and at this spot right behind him for Waltrip and there you see that number 9 car lake speed from 20th to 12 he's pulled that on four laps Mellon car we qualify on the second day of qualifying picked up his feed from industry however he had to start behind those cars that had qualified on Saturday the stood on their time and he is coming up through the field very well they were still fussing and fidgeting with that pony they again changed rear springs what softer on lakes bees number nine apparently it's made a big difference there you see the front of the field working in lap six there nine cars in the lead trap now there were just three a little about two laps ago Jimmy Spencer back there in fifth Michael Waltrip six Wally Dallenbach putt horse car in seventh Johnny Benson eight Ward Burton ninth Kyle Petty Lake speed Bill Elliott all in that group low losing her down the top 12 coming around three distinct packs of racing out here now take a look at him here there's that first group the second group fair the foul petty in the very well getting Wallace right there and you see Lake speed there's that last group further back Marcus in 15 spot I think they've lost the draft up elite group so they're gonna have to do their own crafting back there palpating his group is catching the frontrunners because they can thicken food is the card number seven download the inside trying to pass his brother put on brothers running side by side brett bodine had trouble earlier lost his a car that he really intended to run this race with caught on fire coming to the trial back up car not looking too bad 11 or retro die now there are 14 cars in the lead route and they're willing to sit on this one for a moment or two right buddy yeah we're just looking at Johnny Benson I did this group here we say next is the last car there in the front group and he's running very well I'm sure he's going to school right now [Music] doing a great job last six straight years Earnhardt has taken the ball to school just 125 and from mark Martin's camera is looking back Mike Wallace just behind him you see the cars moving they're very soft on the front here a long time ago we used to think you had to really make the car too stiff if you notice it's getting a lot of travel across the bumper through the corner Martin and 16th spot 6,800 of the 195 was the top speed I noticed trips a second ago going into corners strokes off down to about 187 Marten closing in on Dave Marcus Marcus and 15 there are the leaders another time Sterling Marlin has had some success out here in the 125s competitive whenever run back in Nahuatl 7320 to lead changes among six drivers in that one sterling just to sue not have a race like that today but he may have one just exactly like that to see the line staying right steady in second Earnhardt and Byrd and they look like they're ready to deliver more when they need it can't some of these cars at the back of this draft are beginning to get a little bit racy Bill Elliott made a move there moved up a couple of position they have to be all together they get side by side back there they can lose the draft very easily again we were talking about three distinct weeks there's only two now Kyle Petty has moved into the front group as you notice here there's no longer three big packs there's only coud Merlin the body Earnhardt Jarrett Spencer the front five michael waltrip six dollars back Benson Ward Burton Kyle Petty and he Wallace take you back to 11th and look at Robert Pressley pressing on the bottom here and this two and a half way in the first Gatorade 125 coming up tomorrow at noon Eastern the 38th running of the great American race it's the Daytona 500 live flag-to-flag coverage that's noon Eastern tomorrow on CBS 13 250 laps completed this qualifier Marta Levani Earnhardt Jarrett duking it out his draft continuing back through darling back and Benson you see Wally going back there in the 15 in the bud more car and doing quite well in 125 level and right in front of him the 21 with Michael Waltrip getting the new assignment in that chair what a job he's doing staying right up there in the front five men present the Wood Brothers car which has had a lot of success here David Pearson I guess the most notable race that he won here was in 1976 when he had Richard Petty crashed in the 500 coming off turn four to get the checkered flag and Pearson was able to nurse his car across the line so the Wood Brothers they're always contenders for if they go back to 68 is Gail back in the days of the burning white gold colors on it there's the front of the group [Music] Kyle Petty battling with Kenny Wallace in the 81 and they'll Elliott in the forward helping is for advantage Kenny Wallace go by on the outside here's the Pontiac up Bobby Hamilton going by Kyle Petty and so we'll Lake speed I got caught down on the inside couldn't do anything about it it's all back there in 10th position Bill Elliott working on Kenny Wallace [Music] Wallace had a great qualifying run with his brand-new Winston Cup team and a brand new sponsor the Kenny Wallace just in front I mean the back of the car starting to dance around just a little bit they all very come over you can notice that his hands were very still on the steering wheel and still it stabilized up in front with Martin the bothy Earnhardt the front three jail Jerry just behind never he started the front row slipped back to six or seven come back to fourth looks like he has more to deliver before this one's over Earnhardt looking at the inside yeah he's made a move going into turn one just a moment ago he liked he wanted to get on the inside all the body fit flat pulled it off the body moved to the inside of the track sort of cut him off yeah they were once in a while they fought cars they're destined pretty tight right now and you notice some tape on the front of the car some up might be running just a little bit warm they ducked out like that just before they go in the corner get a fresh better hair on that front end of the race car look at her heart making another move he comes down to the inside sneaks a peek trying to take his way through with this incredible shot from the airship here he comes and LaVon is going to be caught up on the outside there without any drafting help unless Earnhardt can get back between them and he does now here comes Jarrett and Michael Waltrip in the Fords they're gonna see if they can team up together go viola body Jarrid giving you these pictures at 190 miles an hour she scoots back up into the 31 degree banking comes through three and four you know what I think her heart may have moved over like that and realized he had a lot of draft on the inside the next corner he made the move looking at the rear veiled Jarrett's car and you see Michael Waltrip continuing to press toward the lead in this new ride Friday cars still tight together in here tell the coward the only car to be lapped thus far we worked lap 18 there you see that number 15 that white in life the but more car it's in here on a one-race only basis with a one-time sponsor on that car you can see the territory captain chose to go with the five car down the back straightaway I'm tearing the body and they kick Johnny Benson in that number 30 looking just his food as he did in the grand national a year ago 21 the time there came up out of the Midwest out of Grand Rapids Michigan the driver of that yellow number 30 [Music] yeah I don't think ever planned I don't know why moved to the bottom of the racetrack like that leads off we all face and again those leaders try to snap the whip and pull away in front the remainder of the video you can cut that hair that crap down to two or three cars that's what you want to do now Levani is trying to bring them all back together I think yes very fast race car that's what he wanted to do was get back in front of those other cars and I think you'll be able to leave a brought back up there [Music] Gator a 125 caution on the fryer yellow is coming down brand we've got some sprinkles out here the beginning to be more like showers so they're going to put the caution out this is going to come at lap 19 it just went into the 22 flap and they put the yellow on the field CBS Sports coverage of the Gatorade 125s will continue after this message and a word from your local station the bud 1 airship aerial of the king of beers is proud to provide you these beauty shots of the Daytona International Speedway today in the 125s great crowd out under cloudy conditions leave we're getting ready on a restart here shortly let's to summarize again what went on the bits the back of the field came in but the leaders stayed out here on the track and did not fit Marlin Earnhardt Jarrett Labonte Michael Waltrip Dahlin back the front six Benson seventh Burton Jimmy Spencer Bill Elliott 2/10 Lake speed eleventh Kenny Wallace 12 Dave Marcus 13th Mike Wallace those those guys they stayed right out here on the track those that were outside of that group took advantage of the opportunity granted by that quick shower we seem to take a ruler car to make it better if Sterling Marlin had come in to open your whatever keep that track position Gatorade 125 ready for resumption pace car is off the tribe sterling marlin leads him down Sterling Marlin who was second to Earnhardt in the 94 125 in which they faced off at at another time [Music] come up on Sterling Marlin then Center part of the corner yet try to run on him better as you see now Sterling's starting to pull back a little bit Bernard did have a run on him and they'll Derek thought he had a run on Earnhardt that could make any kind of a move everybody pretty much they can file - you look from first to second second to first down into turn number three this 50-lap 125-mile qualifier sterling Marling the line Earnhardt in second Jarrod tucked into third Levani Erin still thanking a great rock Michael Walter when that would runners car stays fifth on the scale is behind him Wally Dallenbach from the but more Ford stays in six Johnny Benson in the yellow number 34 mihari racing is seventh out here [Music] bill Davis cars with restrictor plates didn't look back those things boring when they come by the camera just then I want to tell you that makes you realize just how here they come buddy I don't think it's time for them to start to showing really what they can do was not too much passing right now they were able to get down to last laughter you agree what I would drop her if I wasn't ernhardt says this car don't like the road first did the driver too so if he gets a break you will look at Bobby Hamilton there up the side Mark Martin on the outside camels have made a great run at the outset of this race then fell back of it Robert Pressley he felt way back now he's trying to get himself back into this thing Darrell Waltrip way on the tail end of everybody back about 23rd or 24th where's Presley in the 33 with Mark Martin just in front we just saw bobby labonte there a moment ago he is the Cabot's on the bubble right now there he is at the middle of that pack last man to lead all the way was to back in 91 from Davey Allison now Sterling Marlin is threatening that way here's Mike joy ken we knew the leaders would not have to stop for fuel or for tires but that nobody did signifies that nobody is overheating running in that tight trap now with the Sun behind the clouds it's probably six to eight degrees cooler than when we started this race but these cars don't need to stop to pull tape off those drills they can maintain maximum downforce and not overheat so everyone stayed out take you to look at those front cars right now they look like they're ready to stay out the whole distance run that 125 miles with Marlin Earnhardt chair at that front three well there are eight of them in the lead pack now trying to pull away from that second pack which is headed up by Jenkins [Music] on the tail end of that lead draft in eighth place Ward Burton in the number 22 you see if this is going down they're following along after Benson Ward Burton better be careful you see dropped in back just a little bit about another two car lengths he's going to lose it [Music] get back in that beat drop Betty unlocked the days in the past when when I was driving race cars in the early days of your career the cards were bigger they opened up the much wider dam in the air these cars are so aerodynamic now like you say if you get just a couple of car lengths behind after you 7th and 8th in 30 and 22 coming by in this ain't car pack battling for the lead Gatorade 125 first round further back there's darrell waltrip way out and back in 23rd position disappointing for him right now he'll have to hope for a provisional starting spot the way things are going unless we get one of those calamities like we had in 94 when they tore out eight of them in the center of the race back up with the leaders in the guy that's in trouble right now one of the feast there several but one of them is tau Teddy I don't think Kyle speed was good enough to get him in this race unless something very dramatic has fallen all the way back to the rear of the back 24th position leaders coming back to the stripe another time is Bobby Labonte in the 18 car here's Earnhardt going for the lead dare Earnhardt pulls it back in front and here comes Gail Jeremiah win if it's the Dale of Dale's show another time here at Daytona okay now who's Terry Labonte gotta go is it gonna go with these Chevrolet buddies he's gone Dale Jarrett or he got a problem right now they're just they're pretty much at mine but you see this great racing right here there's racin all the way back there goes Dale Jarrett in the second place well Terry Labonte took up a little bit you see Mike Walter looking on borrowed family does not have enough room to make that move CBS Sports coverage to the Gatorade 125 s will continue in a moment [Music] once again Gatorade sponsoring the front run a reward program Gatorade will award a $10,000 bonus to the leader of each Winston Cup race at the halfway point $50,000 to the Winston Cup point leader at the halfway point of the season go look at the running order out here as Earnhardt and Jarrett keep it a Chevy Ford battle up and front and as those cars have singled out they're coming back up and here comes Marlon just showing how strong his Chevrolet is Sterling Marlin all the way back up in there for second place Geri was able to fall back in third he's sort of snuck in there headed there in her life the body had perhaps had to let off just a little bit and look at the 22 down to the inside now you're beginning to see Burton begin to roll out there Ward Burton out of South Boston Virginia very smooth driver won his first Winston Cup race a year ago rocking at North Carolina looking really good you know Jimmy Spencer were fighting to get back in this group but when they started running two-by-two he moved right in very close to get them to back events and they're coming through turn to look at Ward Burton in the 22 bring that bill Davis car up through traffic net yes there were eight cars in the lead draft and Ward Burton was at the rear of it now he's all the way up to if position and as Betty said that second group of cars has caught up to him so there's I don't know look like about 15 or 20 in that thing well there are three wives back in that group they're us the very treacherous way to get around this racetrack when we send it back just all week long it can run three wide all the way around battle back there 850 is a dandy [Music] got another shower out here on the track let's see if it's gonna bring out a caution for the moment Lake speed in the number nine the milling car is rotting in that 15th position 15th and caught on point with Earnhardt already having qualified they pick up 14 more earnhardt on the pole for the first time in his career here on CBS who else is beginning to rock it up to this thing Mark Martin in the number six good stuff yeah miss Claudia then look at him come along what's that 8th position out there now keep an eye on and one of the reason mark Martin's moving up like he is he knew he didn't have a fast car for qualifying this car has a lot of downforce this part of the race now the cars really need to handle around the racetrack and the better handling race cars will come to the front 34 laps complete I don't think mark marks qualifying speed was good enough to get him always look at the rain on the back straightaway there boy when you go through there just for a second you go oh I hope it's in this little spot here not in the turn it's a little dicey out there sea legs be take that number nine and up by John Benson finds a hole on the bottom pulls up beside Bobby Hamilton in that silver 25th anniversary for his sponsor 43 had an engineering I think Johnny Depp's was dropping back because of the rain but he thought up front all touches it Benson got together with Bobby Hamilton I think he dropped back home and Carolyn when it started raining he can week out and Wester stuff they don't back up anything as long as that green so yellow is out once again this will be a break for Tom baby he wasn't too far less than half left going the lap damp and this is a key move coming back to this line at this point in the race shower me see what's going to either look of this feel as they come to the line does everybody's got their hand if it looks like they backed out there we go they don't really race back to the flag as hard as they used to much of the gentlemen's agreement but they kind of say when they come down towards the coast it's always one that decides not to be a gentleman however you know how that goes name is Carson Earnhardt Carla Jarrett very little body staying right up here in front with Ward Burton go further back Michael Waltrip right in there dollar back Martin Jimmy Spencer all having good runs CBS Sports presentation of the Gatorade 125s is sponsored by Goodyear number one in tires Texaco Havoline formula three motor oil controls volatility and fights vaporization and by Dynomax performance exhaust systems engineered by Walker let's reset the field for you as they get ready on a restart Erna mark mylow Jarrett Labonte running up a truck with Warburton fifth and Michael Waltrip in this thing darling back Mark Martin having a good run Jimmy Spencer all ready for a go everybody ready for a go you're it they told him the car that was on the bubble in 15th place lake speed now on pit road he left to come from the rear of the field our number 9 getting ready on a restart here at Daytona 2nd shower it's still a little damp out here but they're going to turn them loose when they do you'll have Earnhardt in front it Sterling Marlin in second Dale Jarrett in third Terry Labonte is in fourth with Ward Burton fifth Michael Waltrip 6.1 back seventh on this restart this means that jumping up into the 15th spot will be car number 7 Geoff Bodine Bodine will be on the bubble we're sterling Marlins crew and there you see Tony Glover mustachio gentleman right there who's on the radio to Sterling he's been telling him to take a look at that number three and just be smart now you see a adeno or you can buy Z see number nine catching up to the field [Music] talking Sterling Marlin into this restart 12 to go why don't you tell us where he's gonna none so Geoff Bodine is in 15 and in 16 is Robert Pressley and 17th is Bobby Hillin 18th is Kenny Wallace further back in his field they continue to fight it out and get themselves into the Daytona 500 the great American race 38th annual edition flag-to-flag on CBS Sunday 12:00 Easter restarted this Gatorade 125 [Music] again at about Thursday where you're not going to see people just sitting there now and they're gonna start trying to make your moves here pretty quick [Music] in that shower Kenny Wallace pitted with saw Kyle Petty on pit road as well as Bobby Labonte strategy here gentlemen well there is no strategy what you have to do is try to position yourself with somebody that's very aggressive so you can make it move near the end of the race [Music] see Mark Martin they're looking underneath the hip are there no aback [Music] position me down on racetrack [Music] hailing off relax and ago can ernhardt 75 70 years in a row he tried to roll as heaven look at this bat further back there's Robert Pressley on the inside bow dine on the outside that's the battle for the bubble back for 15 SWAT and Bobby Labonte coming up there the to Gibbs car that's the green number 18 he made a pit stop put on four tires caution [Music] Brett load on he needs to really really hard and fast enough to get in there that's right I don't think his speed would get it in the race [Music] today Robert Pressley moves up through Johnny Benson coming with him dill Elliot getting caught up in this group as they run him two and three wide on that 31 degree banking take a look at that folks fifteen and sixteen seven and eleven right now the seven of Jeff bodean the 11 of his brother by anyone don't want to get beat by your brother you're that 11 just dropping back Pressley the representative number 43 he battling pretty hard and self present moment and there they all are 20 strong in the same straightaway about a second apart in this first Gatorade 125 Earnhardt going to lead just as fire suspense back there for that 15 spot as there is in this battle see of Earnhardt can win at seven straight times [Music] [Music] for Sterling Marlin there he have a lot of racecar I think that a little bit of time we had to pull the terrible [Music] he was little just a little bit but it seems to have stabilized now look at Presley quite Jeff what I'm that black number seven [Music] you had to don't make me fall out and care of who lean on me I'll tell you what that is flu crazy [Music] and always just gotta have fun the 500cm weaving back and forth down the back straightaway utilize it and here's trouble thanks right away one in the wall and it catches the 18 puts bobby labonte up and over and that's Brett Bodine is number 11 they got hammered on the outside apparently into the wall I'm Jeff bow tied his brothers in it as well you can see for cars all snarl as they race back to the slide in front Sterling Marlin across in second and Dale Jarrett coming across in third there's Bobby Labonte out of his car Bobby Labonte as they fought for that 15th position has to walk away from one after he takes a tumble Bobby has the speed what good enough to get him in the Daytona 500 but Joe Gibbs team is not having a good week down here they've gone to their own engine program and they have been struggling there's Brentford on out of his car and he'll be out of the 500 I don't believe there's much of a chance that he will be in it and for the first time he bought that team from jr. Johnson for the first time since this racetrack opened back in 1959 jr. Johnson is not to be some ride in that wagon where's now where is Jeff bodean able animate intended the inside and came around see a lot of damage there on the front end of the 11 car Brett Bodine [Music] half weekend we caught on fire and practice here and got in the wall now he's crashed another car and down here you see Bobby Hillin working the 77 on pit road and he get ready to come back out he had a lot of damage on the right rear corner of that car he must have got in that as they were spinning over there yeah there's that damage he comes back out there turning up that back straightaway as quickly as possible and trying to get this race to finish under green some observations about this incident the back straightaway folks hey that's Bobby Hillin in the car 77 down on the inside it looked like he and Brett Bodine got together that's where that damage on the right rear of hill ins car came from they got together spun down to the inside Bobby Labonte is gonna come along and try to go on the inside of them lake speed does get by down there but Geoff Bodine gets caught up in it so does Kenny Wallace in car number 81 here comes Bobby Labonte he's going to hit the Brett Bodine car roll over on his top slide down the track on his top then it'll flip back home to the wheels that had to be an eternity for bobby labonte you could see him lock it up in the 18 and try to fight his way to the bottom to get out of his mess there does Bo dine on the outside he makes contact there Bobby Hillin right on the right rear corner and then they make contact and Jeff did get tagged there goes Kenny Wallace down in the grass there he was very very lucky to make it through there [Music] yeah Kenny Wallace just getting true and bobby labonte now watch this he did everything right back but for a fraction of a second he was through that one that's the result you know sometimes you can do everything right and get caught just like he did there he could not hit the grass at 200 miles an hour and save the car so he went as low on the racetrack as he possibly could and they made contact on the back straightaway Kenny Wallace car on pit row no they had a good time and look at the nose blunted on that car and they would they'll make it into the race for sure here's Mike Kenny Wallace has climbed on it looked like you hit a wheel the dirt embankment or everything I don't know it all started coming off the turn on for the lap before I guess somebody got into it vote on it are you okay oh yeah I'm fine just pride hurt that's all I couldn't go nowhere I had a good run going on the top side there and up Brett Burton got into Bobby hill in there they were shaking fists at each other going down the straightest I don't know dick Berggren jebadiah's crew is ready for a game to come in he's not going to have much time to do any work but they've got the Hammers out and they've got the sheet metal shears out they're ready to put some new tires on it they also want to reach that the roof flap they keep looking down pit road here comes the car finally Jeff Bodine is in what do the Kennex does that work front corner this car is well poor enough will cool Hercule at Daytona we're aerodynamics is so important that she's paulien still work they may be able to stand on their time and they get in see what's going on back behind the wall here there's Kenny Wallace's car being pushed back you saw the petty crew there they must be a static Bobby Hamilton back in 215 spotted on the bubble here and here comes bowtie not to give another shot his optimism is up the old glint is back in his eye this year that sure took the wind out of his sails Bobby Hillin back in the pit they're still trying to get some of the sheet metal off the tires there before the race starts back and they're getting ready to start back Betty they're longed to be just a few laps to go in fact there when they get the green flag don't only be three more laps to go so it's gonna be a real shootout at Midland Texas Bobby Hill is gonna come out for the final three and a bruised battered number 77 we'll be back after this message and a word from your local station pushing the field for you with three laps seven and a half miles to go the big story here the man on the bubble as well as who's up front Bobby Hamilton's there in the number 43 and 15 Lake speed 16th Kyle Petty 17 tried to take it away from for the finale in the first Gatorade 125 Earnhardt leads him down with Marlin Jarrett Terry Labonte Ward Burton all in here look at this scramble out back to that 15th spot [Music] whoops Robert Pressley rot in the middle gets into Johnny Benson that with Hut Stricklin in the 8 car there that went all the way down on the flappers arrest that or they want to get into traits of the worst way if you don't have enough speed to get in the race for wide oh hey they gonna move on the inside that Lakes fish on the outside and look at this battle for the lead here comes now you see they're not going up the racetrack this may work for sure though on the bottom side to move up now they made that part yeah he made that car handle on the bottom and the klaxon there he is diving in the second spot perfect move by Dale Jarrett and here comes Terry Labonte right back into it sterling stuck in fourth position now and look at this battle down there on the bottom side of throwing there he looks like he's gonna make the pass they're coming in no you get the mic and here comes throne and fight back on the outside and on the inside number 22 is in it another time take a look at Burton line up through this field and look at that for car come up on those guys he's gonna have a head of steam I believe you blow rockbind sighs that is man [Music] good enough to get him into read for me everything to get in but they don't bother he's a good shake if he can just hold on into my flank period and Bobby Hamilton back to 15 holding that position that the affiliate there and in 94 on the bottom side just in front of them as Dave Marcus they're in a 71 car here comes Johnny Benson are you go past the grass on this one here comes Dale Jarrett here comes early mom for turn 3d terry labonte trying on outside to stand behind come on I believe there were no and if he dies he's rolled a seven seven straight 125 coming down for the finish they they can triple wide to the line you can give that one to Earnhardt seven straight years he's won a 125 when it comes to the rest of it put up that old line too close to call we'll wait for the official announcement on that 15 spot but make no mistake about it the man in black he is back and he intends to do business in the great American race a look at the final results on this one and we'll be going to Victory Lane with the Intimidator himself Earnhardt and coming up after me back at Daytona with the results on the first Gatorade 125 Earnhardt Marlon Labonte the top three and Dale Jarrett had himself a good ride out there got shuffled back a little bit on the last lap but I'm sure he's happy to be starting seventh in the Daytona 500 Michael Waltrip for the Wood Brothers and six out there buddy oh I'm telling you Michael running a great race Ward Burton and seventh there he'd really had to do what he did because he didn't have a fast enough time to make the 500 so he raised himself into a good starting spot for the Daytona 500 see Johnny Benson finishing in 14th as we continue to look back through the results on this first 125 Bobby Hamilton and 17th stand on his feet Waltrip will have to look for a provisional out here for the 500 and let's take a look at some of the highlights from that first 125 miles camp there was one major actors are coming off a turn to see the plaque number 77 to Bobby Hillin on the inside Brett Bodine in the blue yellow 11 car they get together Bodine spins around he was hit by his brother Jeff Bodine and Hillen continues to spin around and as Brett Bodine continues down the racetrack has no control of his car here comes Bobby Labonte in the car number 18 he thought he had him clear hit him just enough to flip his car over on the roof then he does ride himself back on all four for you Bobby Labonte's car dug in pretty hard rang his Bell but all the drivers walked away from this and on speed Bobby Labonte is in the race as is now look at this pass for the lead they learned heart movin got the hoenn sterling ball and he moved to the inside and that is the key pass and let's join that man who made that pass Dale Earnhardt in victory lane with Mike joy seven-time wins to Cup champion and now seven straight 125 mile race victories for Dale Earnhardt well you said this car liked it out front and that's where you put it you know I gotta think Scotney young and all the guys back stop speeding cleaning this is the engine that we ran the Busch clash away so down to the mouth about after the race and we got it tuned up in this car here this is the car it likes and I got a hand at them guys they worked off a heart over the winter and we got a great engine a good race car the guys did a great job testing everything so all coming together here for now I wasn't really happy to keep that streak of of 125 to live that's pretty impressive look like everybody clotheslines sterling when you made us move everybody went with you well it was a race of heads act in his just ever he was gonna work with who Sterling's car was off a strong and I think I think he had the car to beat is just a you know we got back in front and we shook him an allograft with the cars race and him so we were fortunate they got the race in each other we wouldn't want it was certainly wouldn't want to congratulate in 37 years you can count on one hand the guys who have launched themselves from the 125 to win the 500 the last man to do it did it just a year ago and he's standing by with dick Berggren right now mr. Lee Marvin Sterling Marlin is in the gas pup area sterling second is it okay to finish second in East 125 when the car is still in one piece SC is we like to won the race and the car worked off bitterly and what worked over the whole time and they got out to be chuffing back and we just never could get a run at Dale like we needed though you get to him and he Michael back in real wide but we got the best motor and truck waiting on Sunday and we should be in good shape car drove off for good and that's what we need what do you think about Sunday well with school keep our fingers crossed like the days real encouraging the car I'll run 50 laps and the chance to never change drove awful good and I said we got the best stuff later truck so we'll see what happens ken Squier speaking of what's happening take a look right here in what CBS has planned this year for that's car racing CBS expands its nascar schedule in 96 tomorrow for sure the great American race the Daytona 500 in June Michigan in July from Talladega the die-hard 500 the grand national schedule on CBS this year includes Watkins Glen New York Talladega Alabama and the season finale at Miami on November 3rd and this qualifier your way into the Daytona 500 right here right now starting grid for the second Gatorade 125 the pole the comeback kid Ernie Irvan and number 28 and the dark horse Jeremy Mayfield number 98 road to defending Winston Cup champion jeff borkin and Rick mast road three twice a winner in the 125 ken Schrader and last week's winner of the ARCA 200 here Jeff Purvis row four is Jeff Burton and John Andretti row five Joe Nemechek and Loy Allen jr. row six is Morgan Shepherd and Ricky Rudd row seven twice a runner-up in the 125 Rusty Wallace and Steve Grissom roulade is Chad little and Derek coke Road I Ted Musgrave and Joe Ruttman for Roatan it's Jim bound and Elton Sawyer row 11 last year's Rookie of the Year Ricky Craven and Chuck Bown row 12 is Dick Trickle and Jim solder and Outback will be Tracy Leslie [Music] field ready for the second Gatorade 125-mile qualifier here at the two and a half mile world center of speed with 25 cars to compete here remember Ernie Irvan is already in the field 14 drivers in each 125 transferred to Sunday's 500 they are in starting positions 3 through 30 Bernie's already there again an interesting point seven out of the last 10 Daytona 500 winners have come from the second Gatorade 125 qualifying race keep believing those kind of numbers Baker I know one thing what we can look for here we're going to look for a great race because there's some really good race cars up front I don't believe in superstition when it comes to 500-mile races well folks you write this one down because if you're in the company pool that Jared used along very often this is the race to watch the win here we go folks with Kearney urban and or Jeremy Mayfield [Music] backstory Ernie Irvan leading this field down [Music] ray see real early Rusty Wallace in the number two here's Jeff Gordon trying to make a move early he's right on you've seen pulling high gear if they start down the back straightaway there's you same coming down the looking under the 28 not enough room to make that pass Rick mast Jeremy Mayfield hung out to dry slipping back Jeff Purvis in the car number 44 caught in the middle there this car was a little loose that's the red and white number 44 you see it right there Jeff Jeff Purvis Phoenix card still loose you get the least amount of hair in the center there of anywhere on the racetrack if there's another 3y family nothing holding him down he had you're exactly right his car is moving around quite a bit in the center part yeah I know he would like to be able to move to the high side of the racetrack [Music] one they are for 200 here at Daytona Jeff Purvis [Music] meanwhile up in front it's urban now bad looking for a shot at the lead that would give Pontiac back up on 24 and Jeff Gordon he had his heart his throat for a second 15 cars working together you say Jeff Gordon ten to twenty four Kenny Schrader and twenty five they seem to be drafted right alone trying to catch up on Ernie Irvan they got a tremendous run a steam going into turn three and beg him for almost ran over Rick past he had to make them invasive move to keep from hitting him he was going so fast and that Pontiac number one ass box back now today's first Gordon second straighter third Mayfield the end of 98 hanging right onto this thing traitor that's a rejuvinated guy Ray Evernham taking over to run that team he's right behind Jeremy they feel right behind Schrader ninety-eight German they feel he was the fastest car in practice all through the winter sessions in that car has been strong all week long not a tremendous qualifying speed fourth fastest overall race day Phil hammer takes over down on pit road on that 25 and ever ham moves on to the 24 a major part of the story in the 38th annual 500 CBS Sports coverage of the Gatorade wonderful five will continue in a moment the bud one airship and it's eye of a sky camera proud to provide you these pictures from more than 1,000 feet above the Speedway [Music] boy Allen jr. 2:19 they're trying to get back in but he's caught in the middle just as we thought her [Music] twenty-seven he had a good qualifying speed he qualified on the second day of qualifying which was owned Monday he rented an engine from Cale Yarborough and he is moving right on up through that Elton Sawyer we talked about the car number 27 and that two car on the outside number 18 Joe Ruttman both ran over the top alloy Allen therefore [Music] give up and don't leave before the race today he said I don't have any choice I have to run the race in my life to get half my speed and fast enough just over 181 miles an hour and that will get you at the divinity further back to this pack could Rusty Wallace getting sorted out in car number 2 a second place here being shown in 19th at the moment trying to come up right in front of him Joe Nemechek in the 87 [Music] they don't mean to check out with him they start on the outside just keep on going by him he's trying to get back in almost contact there between the cars they walk back in there and that green car in there [Music] new Morgan Shepherd ride new for Morgan to see butch Hawk Motorsports pain the car number one of Rick mast mail when he is running in second place [Music] the way here to the back injury car you see there that Dick Trickle really made this car very competitive in one week's time down here you see moving right along he has also run a race here at Daytona looking on on these Gatorade 125 second race underway here are the leaders watch urban out in front traitor is third Jeremy Mayfield Maine sandy Court and John Andretti beginning to show some power grandpa smiles car that corn is beginning to ramble and ready up in the fifth Ernie Irvan is still ruling them here faster than the qualifying speed for the big lebowski Ward Burton's brother Jeff is now in sixth position grace that compression that kids puts them Cup racing this year what a difference it's made stacks of Raya last time around over 190 miles an hour or already urban that when you get pulled around here at 190 miles an hour there's a grilling you don't like any need to pull out and make it trying to gather the lead because ernie irvan's really taking these guys for a ride [Music] so they just wanna hang up look at the Chuck Bown right in behind Rusty Wallace trying to wake his way through underneath chat littles number 97 up on the outside that's Wallace on the inside and they get him three wide Wallace got attacked trying to get it back he took pit road ah he's wide open but that was the only choice he had he got throttled coming down out of turn number four got a look at that one again folks holy smokes it looked like he was on his way that was probably the most heads up driving I've ever seen anybody do on the front straightaway had he got the grass trying to stay in with that group there he would have certainly wrecked he went down pit road saved his car and kept on trucking lost the draft but and he still got a racecar take a look at this replay of what happened to Rusty Wallace Rusty Wallace on the inside the second car Joe Ruttman I think is it I got tagged in the back there bound there's Rutland's car next to bound [Music] here right they that was a great piece of driving dick Berggren Don Miller Rusty Wallace his team manager says the car is just fine but I'll tell you he was hanging on to his part when he watched that car come down pit road he says now we just got to tell him to calm down and take it easy the problem with that is he's lost the trap he's well back he's 24th urban stays 1st Gordon and 2nd Kenny Schrader's into third and the guy everybody's talking about Carolee the name to write down think about for the future Cale Yarborough's car a year old car one they brought here last season having a whale of a race they Morgan Shepherd beginning to run a little bit higher line there that normally means the car is pushing a little bit or having a little bit I'm sure he would like to have that car handle it just a little bit better so he could stay on the bottom and then the draft a little tiger number 98 we got a report that his car's beginning to heat up a little bit a little bit warmer than he wants to there's that Morgan Shepherd there's the local mortgage everything for in 1996 and right behind him you see Purvis you could see that car pushing just a little bit up our corner then there but he does like a tight race car so he it might be doing just what he wants it to do Jeff Purvis is in seventh in the 44 Ricky Rudd and antennas an eighth then Jeff Burton 89 Steve Grissom is in ten and back on the bubble is Joe Nemechek CBS Sports coverage of the Gatorade 125 will continue after this message and a word from your local station [Music] a year ago Sterling Marlin made the run past Dale Earnhardt for a trip to Victory Lane now Marlin makes Arana history looking to become the first driver to win three consecutive Daytona 500s tomorrow live flag-to-flag coverage of the great American race the Daytona 500 [Music] and what a preview were getting of the Sunday 500 here with the urban leading Jeff Gordon trader Mayfield Shepherd that front five all tight together in fifth place and I mean he is not giving up any ground whatsoever just a little bit higher but you see yet he's able to pull a car rat down breathe through the corner baby no fair run but the story of this race is Salinas California's Ernie Irvan in this car twenty eight ten percent chance of living through the night back in 1994 in July that terrible crash in Michigan and here he is back looking in championship form here holding Gordon Gordon taking a look on the inside Chevy van in front of the second Gatorade 125 in Canada just had the most miserable year last year back up there and third and looking very strong right now and giving us these pictures of the leaders Ned NAT who would you say Fuller for right now ray effort and have works on both these cars he's overseer on both cars to make sure they're as good as they possibly can be who would you say he's pulling for it this moment I think he's pulling for both of course he's still the crew chief on the 24 so he's with him all the time at the racetracks and don't get rude there's Jeremy Mayfield hanging a right in there Tony fer the crew chief on this car that's just a basic old racecar nothing fancy just get it done new Johnson combination whatever it is this movie cos on the way to the top he's on his way well he's still among the top four at the present time patience of a champion at 24 the champion makes four million dollars last year take a look further back where the bubble action is here that found that red white car and just running him I Steve Grissom there and the hanna-barbera car you see all characters on the side there [Music] right now nobody cares what's on there as far as colors though he needs to go pretty hard my joy Ray Evernham the cars you've worked on all week are running second or third how much tougher has it made your job supervising the two teams well I've got a lot of good people behind me so that makes it a lot easier and you know I've got kind of mixed emotions with my car to run at second and third but that's awful nice to see Ernie out front again so you know it's a good picture right now but maybe as it gets closer to the fiftieth laughs I like to see one of our cars out front it's very diplomatic yeah other feelings about that [Music] brought him out ran a truck race last year random person come to the end of the season look at Dick Trickle that's 65 that blue car up on the outside he's given that thing a great ride he is being shown the present time 15th on the field 15 laps down I don't know what's wrong with Joe Nemechek but he is going back through the field the cars must not be handling very well ah they say there's some smoke coming out of number 63 big crippled spark we saw this cars up front beginning to see a little smoke out of the car beginning to shuffle around Morgan Shepherd trying to move on the outside of Jeremy Mayfield [Music] they feel getting caught about three laps ago Jeff Berman tried to make a pass on Morgan Shepherd it did work projection see him way back proof of car he almost lost the draft Mayfield sidetracked and the train stays up on that top line we're on and ready moving then there the back car there what you've just come fried old by Jeremy Mayfield it was very comfortable then forth and just got called out a little bit and just move right to the back of that thing Jeff dort riding with him right on the back bumper of our urine we can see by the twitch in the back of the 28 car there that Ernie herb is not on a 70 days roll around here he's having to work pretty hard that car is moving around just a little bit I would suspect that right now the guys really five hundred but still when in the 125 is very prestigious here comes straighter to the outside for second spot teammates side-by-side or the last time they were like that coming out of turn two that we remember Talladega remember that incident Jeff needs to fall in behind him but he did better trying to pass you back the posting base walked up the Busch clash they got to racing each other any costume box grater big at Talladega end-over-end side over side 12 times but this time he's there getting some help from Shepherd yet I believe the upper groove is faster than right around the base of the racetrack right now that worked for for Dale Jarrett in the bush class and a lot of these guys that are going to the outside are just going by boy look at Jeff Gordon is going backwards look at those cars go by on the outside coach Jeff Burton by Jeff Gordon I'll end up in the back of the pack and now look at Gordon come back on that corner he tries to pick up a couple of spots really all week long with this car and it's just not a speed he's going to lap down to lead cars three-wide that 15 position there you see the 63 crippled Musgrave is in there boy Alan Chuck Bown Jim bounds brother in that 95 up on the outside this is the war to make it into the race a lot of them are going to go back on the trailer when this is over and start a very lonely ride home boy Dick Trickle just [Music] a Jack Roush cars and pickles put this race team together in about a week here and he dried up they're moving on [Music] boy Alan m16 is 95 Chuck Bown as they continue that war even across to make it into the race to that little smoke we saw from Dick Trickle scar is not affecting the running on let's go to dick Berggren the Troy's Elbert who is crew chief or Morgan Shepherd in the 75 car has been making trips down pit road right next door is the number 10 Ross pre singer is the pit road captain and what Selberg is trying to persuade free sugar to do is to tell his driver to tuck in the two of the one ago two and they have been some very staunch progress they are now running third and fourth and they are running as a team it's the look of Sunday's 500 earthen Schrader Shepherd rut Burton + Andretti Mayfield and Gordon you can throw a hanky over there you don't ever drop the guard here Daytona you come here for the speed 195 Mylar but it's intimidating that's my kind of race that's kind of race I like I've won here lost here has so many memories you know you just get too comfortable with it it'll bite you in a minute you track the man's respect Busch beer is proud to bring you the great tracts of NASCAR now featuring the Daytona International Speedway is the track CBS sports presentation of the Gatorade 125 s is sponsored by Gatorade first winter the official sports beverage of NASCAR the old new Ford f-150 strength after strength after strength and by Busch beer now featuring the Daytona International Speedway collect the can here at the world center of speed were heading for another typical Daytona finish Fortin peeking down the inside looking under and ready to pick one back on again [Music] his car really comes off that second turn that on the inside court instead but then the others have some momentum up on that outside so they just murdered brought back to die Rocklin goes the lap down to number 80 urban stays in the lead Schrader coming after that may be a factor later on notice Ernie Irvan start was beginning to come off the bottom of the racetrack maybe a half a car left with what they were running about 15 laps ago when they were running faster he turns flaps at 47 for 3233 now he's down to 48 there to learn danger on the inside he's taken a look pull up though he does not at the moment Shepard third rut fourth Jeff Burton fifth there's John Andretti six as you look out from Ken Schrader's view the guy leading this race [Music] take any treasure there look how still their hands are through the corner that means that car is really getting a lot of downforce everything now this is through the dog leg down the front straightaway now if he comes out here you'll see the number one corner is they start down this way when he starts in the corner watched us through their dads are getting into this corner that car is really working well you see the white line that's the bait for the racetrack there they're tugging right around the bottom ernie irvan's cars getting into that sideways such a little bit and you saw that little piece of tape there on the straight or steering wheel that means that is straight up and down that's that's when the when he's going straight now it's custom left little bit my car don't drive at good on the highway I don't know what I'm going to corner boy that thing is really getting some downforce you feel it the smaller your back does it drive you right through the seat that's a good feeling when you have a car that's working that well you see these guys though I don't imagine they're sit there white if Teddy is the other this is for all the beans here these guys need to just look for the bubble right here that's for the lead right there halfway on the field the second Gatorade 125 Bobby Allison for 12 with Derek hope at the controls of Belton saw you there 227 had my strays in the 16th his car is 10 C Sawyer in that black-and-white number 27 xi d twelve musgraves 13 chat little 14th and the 80 car pulling out of a Joe Ruttman gave it a good run today in the early going with something one of this Joe Ruttman goes back behind the wall stay right here with these leaders as you watch our hair and bearing down yeah just watching what they're going through right now I think the mortgage effort may have the Carter babies look very very good ancestor straighter so when this thing shakes out I would look for these cars if they don't make a bad move and get out of position but the man the beat right now is Ernie Irvan and the largest crowd we have never seen here the gatorade 125 is going to erupt if he pulls this off and can stay in front traitor Shepard Rudd and ready and the rest of this field [Music] just past halfway in the second Gatorade 125 here's how they ramble Irv it out and front the man back on the 15th position holding out of the bubble is Spokane Washington Chad little and they're flying [Music] John Andretti's there in the 37 spikelet Jeff Gordon they need to break just off and get back in line and catch back up for that leap router they'll lose the traffic the nighty-night of Jeff Burton in wicked man tail lending this lead raft and this is where the story is right now second Gatorade 125 if you watch Ernie Irvan who won 125 in 1994 Oh take a look at Gordon once again using turn one as a diving board into turn number two up there on the high side [Music] the Retiro fight now we have the bull bit of help from John Andretti on the bottom side hike together it's real tactical death if it is Jeremy Mayfield fight his way back in here off the draft just a second ago and now he is back up in the front booth when those cars got side-by-side that's allowed [Music] which is not that unusual as the tires get worn then down a little bit more so he down down to about 48 60 any elapsed time it does look like he's gonna lose their yeah kidney freighter ride on the white line all the way through the corner I'm looking at urban me beginning to dance sideways just a little bit see this big interval opening up there so how much empty racetrack that was when this front group it's four or five seconds back to that second pack it's all right in here here comes Jeff Gordon back under Jeff Burton if you come off the corner there he makes the move pretty easy they're talking about Ernie Irvan he is one of those types of racecar drivers that can run sideways all day they're like there's not a nerve don't really bother him at all he's a hard-nosed race car driver his confidence level is back an Ernie Irvan is leading in this race with Ken crater try to come off the worst year of his career [Music] Missouri up in front Ford versus Chevy and Morgan Shepherd carrying those Rhema callers on stays right there and third Ricky Rudd was come here year after year to ride in the Daytona 500 his share of upsets of heartbreak look at him holding on to this one he could be a major contender to win the 500 on Sunday with new life making his 20th start for the Daytona 500 [Music] I'll tell you one thing at this speed they all seem to be able to handle the bottom and they can all work the top remember I used to fight to get down there to the white line buddy well double go if you get down on that white line you're coming in because the cars didn't stay on the bottom very well at all they slide about three lanes wide across quite well they have a lot of rear spoiler on a lot of downforce you can see every one of these stars they look like they're in [Music] what's going to make the difference in the 500 I think the race will be won in the corner and what I'm seeing right now Ernie Irvan is doing quite well down down if he's floating facedown they seem to slow down with him so that's always a sign of a very strong race car when everybody else plays off of it I think will be the key you gotta have a good motor no doubt about that but family before you run on this race practice liquid form again you better have a good chance Mike joy and then I think help maybe even a bigger key like Sterling Marlin in the first race Jeff Gordon is now a victim of his own success Ray Abraham complained the three times Gordon has pulled out to pass nobody will work with him nobody else wants that car up at the front [Music] take a look at this 98 Jeremy Mayfield I am so impressed with that kid Kenny Schrader's just made a look on the outside there they come through the dog leg I think you know he's probably thousand he mostly where he has a weakness for later on if they come down to the white flag lap where can I pass him that's what they're looking for right now CBS Sports coverage to the Gatorade 125 will continue after this message and a word from your local station 16 laps to the finish with urban traders Shepherd rut Andretti running up in front further back in the field a guy currently on the bubble in that 15th position is Steve Grissom from GATS Piniella Bama the Budweiser blimp is joining us today over Daytona but one travels the country as the aerial one ambassador for anheuser-busch and look at this battle for fifth and ready number 37 there Gordon number 24 here comes Mayfield again pretty impressive can he doesn't have a drafting partner he went by Jeff Gordon and prymakova [Music] I thank you pretty much at the mercy of the court there at now because [Music] they had some momentum which carried him up there but it isn't going to last and while they were doing that the leaders the four leaders were able to pull away just go away my kingdom for a dancing partner Jeremy Mayfield there yeah you can count your friends on the racetrack with ten laps to go on your thumb again I got a little concerned when Mayfield dropped to eighth to the tail end of that League Draft who started to lose it but crew chief Tony first said he's just going back to cool the car and gathered things up he said he'll be fine he'll get back to the front he's doing just that let's get Jeff Burton back there with him now maybe they can work something out of order those 2 crew chiefs are talking [Music] it would appear that Schrader is just waiting his time just loading up the 12-gauge take another shot here yes we should say that about Morgan Shepherd with his new sponsor here he comes in that third spot and they've just stayed there for the last 15 laps patient waited this one out Ricky Rudd looking very strong Frank works after rikiya let you know i feels about things he's not one of the race [Music] [Laughter] [Music] does he have something left for new earth no matter anything he might be I was just fixing to say the only person that knows what they're in heaven has lady in the poll I don't know whether mortgage heifers let them do this it looks like they might have a little bit for dust oh and the Thunder part of the corner of the straightaway what's going on is the drivers have been very concerned during practice about the three-wide stuff because these cars are doubtful a very risky thing to do and many of them have voiced their concerns about it Ted Musgraves me and had the best comment of all he said there are three lines on this racetrack there's a high line a low line and a no man's line against fire greater crying that high line per second he edged it out Shepard pulled it up just a little bit second back here in 89 in one of these races and Rudd now tried to move her out Shepard as craters took a look but those cars running third fourth or side-by-side there they are right on the inside of Horgan separate here comes Jeff Gordon up on the outside who's gonna win this battle I think that outside lane away to clinic look at Jeff Gordon coming on the outside of Ricky Rudd I mean this is a Power Move and this time to make these moves if Jeff Gordon has anything at all right now he's gotta pull us out of stalking Andretti keeps to the inside on that try to they can three wide to pull back in take a look at the car that's now on the bubble out here that is Jeff Purvis what a class act he is one that ARCA 200 climbed out of that car and that I've won this for a guy that did more for me than anyone in this game see jump out there 295 865 there's nothing's easy in racing believe me the leaders fight this out with these guys to fight just as hard right now for that good start that Chuck bounce having a great ride and they were having trouble in the earlier part of the week they've been getting better all the way along they make it on time alone that's at little in the 97 they're trying to move up also I don't know whether his speed with fast enough to eat in or not but you seem trying to make that move on the bottom they're all shut down as they come out of the corner pulls up a spot [Music] sterling cowboy chat little tried to make it into the 500 out of Spanaway Washington up in front [Music] and straighter willing to wait for the Lapp that makes the difference as does Morgan Shepherd and all of a sudden chef get up there on the back bumper of his teammate you have three forts or two Chevrolet's they're gonna help each other but when it gets ripped right down to it they're out of each other when it comes to make it moves on the racetrack believe you me like I told you a while ago when it comes down to five six laps to go it's every man for himself no matter who you run for but you got to find somebody to make that [Music] back straightaway and possibly make it three wide going into three adapter so that's where the move probably will be made back straightaway try to get a run coming over there basketball on the back straightaway October no chance to run back and three course we don't know what that Ford's going to show yeah do that and there's the battle and there's Chad little up on the outside of that number 97 fighting with Jeff Purvis for that 15th position in this race they take 14 cars Ernie Irvan has already secured himself a spot on the outside of the front row this is the test run for him and some extra cash in the old pocket but I can tell you right now the Chad little need to keep us but 183 won't be enough I don't I don't think so either finish coming up and it looked like it may be one for the game six great NASCAR champions dicing here fighting it out to the side in second Gatorade 125 we saw the rest of all those like that great move come on pit road when he got tamped off of turn forward they're just about to footrest hill a lap down he's been out there running fine no partner whatsoever his time will be good enough to get him into the 500 well if it doesn't he'll have a formalistic a champion provisional there's only one of those there's only one of those but he's one of the later ones to win the championship that's what counts through that means Waltrip could be in trouble that's exactly right I the mortgage Shepard taking another look on the high side there he does that every once in a while I just wonder if he's just trying to find out if you could make it move on the outside on the last level handles are then with no dick Berggren I was Gary Clark while you're Chad little team manager you got any rabbits you can pull out of the Hat for this thing well I don't know right now chance that he's got a real handful out there but we're running right now hopefully hang on pins player there's the story with the guy that has that number 97 together and for the moment he is there in the 15th position in front of purpose in the 44 let's get back with the leaders another time as we watch urban and Schrader setting up here Jeff Gordon on the outside of Morgan Shepherd took over that third spot so he had the team maple right there with him now that number 24 and 25 and he had the strong race car he went by Morgan Shepherd on the outside without any help whatsoever just pulled out and went on my joy and funny that's exactly what Ken Schrader was waiting for to get that Ford a fork and Shepherd out for between he and his Hendrick Chevy teammate Jeff Gordon Schrader will peek out you know Gordon will go with it Ken traitor got so much style and so much class he took one of the worst roles we've seen five to go the year ago at Talladega and after he came out of that infield care center at Talladega went over to ever him and said hey I want you to let Jeff Gordon that's racing then he told me he had one eye closed and all banged up he took the time to do it that is a team India these three have broken racing a little bit back there now Morgan Shepherd trying to pick the draft back up to kick those that free some up front then Andretti runs in that fifth position with him comes right and six traitor looking back at court look at Gordon's car look at the front balance on that car is virtually on the racetrack that's great downforce that means the cars getting a good grip on the front tires second looking at third leader continues to be or any urban the comeback story of the year continues to be written by the guy in number 28 [Music] almost ready to decide this one in the second Gatorade 125 to see rut working on and ready on the tail end of this back there in six position look at Gordon and traitor looking each other over front to back back to front they're dead let's add up for each of those stars boy they're both havilland exactly the same you see right the white line there that's the apron of the racetrack and through the corners they have the left front right on that white line you sure don't want to get down on that white line and you're going to take the right of your life right to it no more no less the mark of these chains just sitting there has not wavered had a little bit loose but I don't know we had contact there almost between John Andretti and Morgan Shepherd Morgan had a handful he had a group he had to back off but he still has a racecars [Music] little twitchy down to the end of this one run all the way under green the gatorade 125s at Daytona I consider them two of the best races you'll see in the year so much at stake you just can't leave you got to go can you see that John Andretti's moved in before stop there and they're coming up on Rusty Wallace here too with just a couple of more laps to go he could play a role in this thing because he's running pretty bad you get out their way but who knows I would say Ernie Irvan right now I was glad to see him up here because that gives him somebody's draft off of his breather I went away just a little bit on freighter there right yeah I think they will help Ernie perhaps more than anybody else as in Cantonese there's Wallis about 10 car lengths in front of Ernie Urban grind down to the road about 190 miles an hour be he Guttag looking and ready climb that wall that might have been a mistake you rods looking on the inside trying to get under we got right back yeah and that's a very strong racecar to be able to pull out a line like that right back up on the car hey laughs coming up rusty move that out of the way you left they were on it down Rainer Bates up high freighters that's outside now with the lead car run urine as they come down toward back straightaway and he knows his teammate will go with him and ready takes a look to to stay behind for he's gonna come in Boerne back and Grady was about to shoot up there to kill bourbon that Gordon didn't know which way to go and the three side-by-side Ford on the inside Chevy on the outside Ernie Irvan leading by about six inches that car traitor here they come for the finish they touched [Music] what a finish for Robert Gates and company Ernie Irvan and Schrader 3/4 of a while that one will go down on the books now that just come down to who wanted to win the hosts turn I mean he did everything that you could do to win a race he made contact everything was just perfect and man what a phrase right photo-finish replay folks this is how they finished the second Gatorade 125 for five cars to the line and ready closing on the inside looks like he may have taken third from Gordon while that is some moment and will be in victory lane with Ernie Irvan to celebrate this incredible comeback bulletproof today the guy they used to call swerving urban the Tollan winner that's what he is can't wait to hear his sentiment when he unbuckles in victory lane final results on race number two Ernie Irvan up in front ken Schrader John Andretti Gordon Rudd good Ron a racing was the way near the end looking a little further back in this field you see Morgan Shepherd Jeremy Jeff Burton had a good run if they did Elton Sawyer came from far back in the be able to finish nine and there you see the last once that will get in the Daytona 500 Chad little bringing up to birth there and Dick Trickle did very well as we look back to the remainder of the field but the man of the hour is the man in victory lane back there for the first time that they caught uh since 1994 dad let's take a look at our earlier ban pulled this out of the fire got pretty wild coming off the turn for straighter on the outside urban on the inside they actually touch coming down towards the start/finish line here Gordon he makes a move high he wants to try to trap pass on the outside John Andretti down on the inside and to come to the start simians line we can see how close it was let's take another look if they come to the start/finish line a photo finish for not only the lead but also for third and let's join my joy with the winner Ernie Irvan on familiar ground victory lane at Daytona what a way to complete a comeback okay I don't know if it's complete yet but I'm sure feels good tell me about that last lap because you had a mirror full of everybody you know my new Schrader was you know he was just sitting there waiting to try to find out a good time to go but he wouldn't wouldn't go because of him though several eggs behind and then about the time I seen Gordon in the rear view mirror with straighter I'd say well I think they're gonna team up on me a little bit but I'm you know I tell you this Robert Yates Texas will have one for Thunderbird um got a lot a lot of a lot of studs under the hood and they did a great job well then tell me and turn three were you surprised to see Gordon right behind you instead of up there behind Schrader well you know I mean he is his teammate but um you know Gordon was trying to run second no matter what and you know Schrader kind of you know kind of buffaloed him at the beginning of the race so you know I'm glad that they were fighting and uh you know I tell you you know I don't know what's gonna happen or whatever but this Daytona 500 is gonna be exciting sure is Ernie congratulations here's dick Berggren well Kenny Schrader pulled into the garage area here and went right over to his teammate Jeff Gordon you guys had a long animated conversation what'd you tell him Kenny how high he helped me a bunch their last lap II I mean it's we're just talking sometimes it's really a pain to have a teammate out here because I drove around him two one time and it was either we were both gonna get passed or I had to go so I went put him in the back I felt terrible he came up behind me and last lap and little John's gonna suck up to Ernie and we're all gonna be wrecked up here so he cut down to protect me and I think he might have been trying maybe he could win too but then he moved back up you know when he was when he was shut out and tried to help me but in you know wasn't nothing okay what is hard to drive three cars I do see that last lap Jeff well you know I saw an opportunity there and you know I had some momentum I come up on Ernie and him I was glad to see him get me sad Ernie I'm thinking all right you know we don't want we want our own team in a Chevrolet to win I'm thinking okay I got the momentum then all of a sudden I see John Andretti come up behind me and he's got the momentum I got moved down to block him they might've stayed in that line you know I might have finished second but I probably wouldn't have won it's all figure hey let's try to make my teammate win it I end up getting fourth so uh your car seemed to be forward and then you'd go back and then you go forward then you go back what was happening well we had a real good handling race car and you know it's just it's tough when you're getting a tight squeeze like that I think I got those guys man I thought I got up there and I come up to him and start passing him on they didn't like that so uh you know I got shuffled back there to the back end I just had to wait a little bit longer until the car started handling better and the other car started going away and then the car came right to us so we know we've got a real good car for the long runs in the 500 - David Hobbs all I'm done with John little Chad you just made it you see sore back and forth their position but you just made how's that feel well I'm all smiles right now but um it was a lot of work it really was that yeah Paulie I can't a pretty good but just everyone is so close you know we um we got some more work to do though we're gonna go back and figure out a setup where we can run a little bit more comfortable when I was in a tight pack it was really a handful but important thing is we made it happy for sterling cowboy a new cup a sponsor and um now what we're trying to do is kind of learn from the cup over the bush side hopefully back and forth maybe give us a little edge come Saturday and Sunday well there's a smiling child little made into the Daytona 500 ken Squier so today Dale Earnhardt is one his 27th race at Daytona hits seventh in a row with the 125 mile qualifier can he win the 500 when Ernie Irvan thumbs up on your great comeback and when we return give you the starting grid for the 1996 Daytona 500 and we're coming to you live here from trackside at Daytona International Speedway back in the garage area most of the Winston Cup cars are rolling out with that final hour what they call happy hour their last chance to test their machinery before the Daytona 500 well all the excitement all the exuberance building toward tomorrow start high noon we'll be with you here at Daytona and what did we learn mr. Baker mr. Jarrett from those the 125 today I think we've learned that three manufacturers have great race cars the Ford is narrowed that gap with the Chevrolets last year after 50 miles the Chevrolet would travel away from the Fords I think they're really strong funny act running well I think we're in for one heck of a race I think what excites me ken is the fact that we only had half of the cars in each of those 125 mile qualifying races we'll get them all in there tomorrow I think we're going to see some of the closest racing that we've seen here in a long long time we keep talking about the Fords and Chevys but all six Pontiacs qualified in the course young Burton in that MBNA car put it right up there among the front competitors will show you the whole field of later folks but III think they may have a good race here well I think so I think this buddy said the Pontiacs are very similar to the Monte Carlos when that came down here a year ago they need a little bit more time with him on the racetrack but they certainly fared well in the 125 mile qualifying races and they've worked on him since then well let's talk to another one of the major players in this race he's been here for many years trying to win it and the Jack Roush team is putting a lot of hopes on the guy from Batesville Arkansas Mark Martin the practice is all over the 125s are done and over with looking forward to the Daytona 500 how do you assess your chances well we hope to be a contender it's gonna take everything that we can muster to do that but you know we've done all we can do we worked as hard as we can we we paid this close attention as we think we can and we'll just have to line them up and see a lot of teamwork going on out there how important is it for you ted musgrave to hook up in this event pretty important pretty important though Ted and I both are fighting a little bit of a speed deficit we both have real good handling cars and we hope to keep them going that way and Ted's of a great great race car driver and he's a great teammate and hopefully we'll be able to help each other a little bit this will be mark Martin's 11th try at the Daytona 500 to Mike joy tomorrow Ernie Irvan seeks to win his second Daytona 500 and Ernie this last year or so what a long strange trip it's been but you paint a victory lane once this week well I tell you it's been unbelievable you know that the amount of things that that went through my mind before I pulled into Victory Lane and you know Mark Martin told me when we were working out a couple days ago he said you know he says everybody says he says wonder if Arnie's ever gonna make it back to Victory Lane he kept telling me it's not gonna be long it wasn't no can your car can any car from what we've seen so far this week pull out and pass by itself no I don't think they're gonna you know I don't think anybody one-on-one without any kind of draft or something you know with a with the five or six cars lined up I don't think anybody's gonna pull out one on one just like when it was two years ago when me and sterling were racing it was I was in a perfect position I had mark behind me and thought I had a real good shot mark run out of gas it's not gonna be a one-on-one pass okay good luck tomorrow Ernie Irvan ken Squier nor was it a one-on-one today in the Busch grand national goodies 300 take a look at the start of this event just over which turned into a wild mailee here net yes that was Doug Heffernan car number 75 almost getting upside-down 257 car is Jason Keller different major regs here this afternoon they're still number 87 and all 14 cars were torn up there were five caution periods 23 laughs under yellow and in the final result of this one give that race to Steve Grissom Dale Jarrett coming home in second passed with three laps to go then came Mark Martin then came Larry Pearson and then Curtis Markham so that's how the Grand National race finished today and now gentlemen I think we ought to look forward to tomorrow and review the starting grid for the 38th annual Daytona 500 Earnhardt versus Ervin and Chevy versus forward in the front row they've been winners all week long they're gonna be tough to deal with and you've got Marlin going for three in a row and how do you feel about trade around here then well I think he's gonna be very strong he looked good in the first class last week as well as 125-mile Labonte and Andretti Texas Terry on the inside a road free there well I tell you Terry it's showing a lot of muscle in practice look for him to be up front all day long that row for Jarrett and Gordon a couple of proven performers there for sure Donald back in the but more car has been a real surprise ricky rudd 17 years down here trying to win this he's a factor Michael Waltrip back with a new team this year the Wood Brothers and they've had a lot of success here at the Daytona International Speedway and there's a couple of guys Ward Burton and Jeremy Mayfield look for them to be dog forces Mark Martin we're just talking with Elton Sawyer he's got a new ride this season Jimmy Spencer is gonna be strong Musgrave looking for his first Winston Cup win and of course the two-time champion Bill Elliott back there in row 11 with Derek cope a previous winner of this race and for the 29th time Dave Marcus is gonna roll out here for the Daytona 500 all star cast getting ready to play Johnny Venson the grand national champion from a year ago moving up to take over in the Bihari car there's Chad little from out west he wants to have a good day everyone looking forward to that green flag tomorrow and the 500 as you get further back in the field there's Ricky Craven lookey of the year a year ago there is a former winner back at row 19 Geoff Bodine 20 back to 1986 Darrell Waltrip this past winter here as well in 89 and that you get to the very last of the field one of the very best Rusty Wallace will be starting shotgun on this field ok let's get some predictions from the CBS gang and go down on pit road well thanks Ken David Hobbs who'll win the Daytona 500 well I think those two races just demonstrated how difficult it is going to be to win that race but I picked him last year and I'm gonna pick him every year until he wins it and that is Dale Earnhardt the man in black dick Berggren well a year and a half after near fatal injuries I'd like to see Ernie complete the comeback and see Ernie Irvan win the Daytona 500 but I agree with David Hobbs it's gonna be Dale Earnhardt tomorrow well sterling marlin has the fastest car and if they will draft with him he can three-peat but every time this week in Thursday and the Friday IROC race forever Earnhardt went other cars followed he'll have the most partners and he may slip past Marlin to win it on the last lap Kevin thanks Mike Baker there's no sense in even asking Jarrett who has picked it out of there hi we all asked him anyway what do you know naturally unprejudiced I think it would be a day on Dale so again right down to the end and I like they don't share Jarrett's chances but Dale Earnhardt I thought they'll go winter alone maybe this was his day ok now let's get to the new guy in the group here the 1980 champion who's gonna win the 500 you're not gonna trap me into this I've been here too many times there's no way in the world I'm gonna predict anybody as a winner somebody will be a winner but I'll tell you if I was that smart I wouldn't be up here with doing that ok well for seven years I've been Ron I'll go another year and say the dirt heart's gonna win it well watch that John Andretti before it's over and watch CBS flag the flag coverage will be underway at noon Eastern tomorrow with a great American race the Daytona 500 it's so special to all of us we hope people be special to you so join us that's tomorrow here on CBS [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music]
