and certainly as always the ugly part of the stat sheet for shaq is the free throw shooting so far in the playoffs overall he's made 42 but missed 71 that's a miserable 37 percent but against the bulls it's gotten worse he's made just a quarter of them these are anxious times for shaquille o'neal on the magic not only what's shaping up as the humiliation of this series but the uncertainty of shaq returning next year because he can exercise an option to become an unrestricted free agent on july 1st yesterday he spoke to ahmad rashad and the magic about the suffering [Music] final seconds a thrashing our pride is on the line i mean we did so much last year just so much this year i don't think we want to be remembered as a team who got swept so we just have to you know go out and just play hard and compete i wanted them to see the houston rocket celebrating because that ultimately is what we want to experience as a basketball team when things start to fall apart people start to point fingers has that started happening on your team not really i don't think it has and i'm a tight player that i will never point fingers because i'm one of the leaders of this team so if things go wrong it's my fault just like in the army if the army messes up it's not the soldier's fault it's the general's fault so if people want to point fingers they just point at me and i just have to you know adjust and come back stronger i'll never give up even if people even if a million and one people point fingers i'll never give up i'm gonna keep on fighting looks like we're going to shoot free throws to settle this way one of nine at the line i say stunning even before shaquille with all his problems at the free throw line i've had this problem for a long time i practice i'm practicing and i hit them in practice and they look pretty and i nail him in practice and sometimes when i'm in a game i guess i guess i'm just you know not concentrating i mean but i would never ever make an excuse for missing free throws i just miss them and i just have to you know keep working on maybe one day when i get up get over that phobia of uh making them in practice missing in games i'm gonna be deadly so it is a mental phobia because i just watched you shoot you know 10 11 right in a row but a whole different i mean when you shot them you shot them differently you were much more relaxed they were coming off the fingers not like you shoot them in the game in the game i i just think i'd just be so you know so hyped so ready to dunk so ready to get my jump hook so ready to run the court and maybe i just don't you know take my time and relax but i'm gonna hit him one day i'm not even worried there's only one thing in my head the [Music] the championship because i got 10 fingers and no rings when you look at the chicago bulls which is a great team i mean a great team how much better are they than any other team that you face this year i mean they're just i mean they have their their two slash three superstars everybody else will roll players i mean those guys on this team they don't worry about who does all the scoring who gets all attention i mean those guys over there they know their roles when you went through that tough period with your grandmother a month ago it seemed like your relationship with coach brian hill was strained what's your relationship with brian now i'm a coaches player whatever a coach tells me to do i do it man i'm like take out a point fingers or i'm not taking a guy to say it's his fault i just come in and do my job and he's a coach and i'm a player i do my job what about your future here in orlando you'll be an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season do you want to remain here in orlando orlando is the first option but i think i'm going to have to test the market and look at all my options but you actually want to stay here in orlando well i know it is the first option i'm i'm going to do what's best for me and my family so because you're sort of avoiding my my question is the first option it's the first option but do you want to stay here i would like to be here but i'm going to do what's best for me and my family and i'm just going to look at all the options i'm just going to weigh him out but i'll be somewhere sunny no matter where i go [Laughter] well i just got off the phone with the weather bureau in la right now it is 72 degrees and cloudy but they say that the clouds will burn off by next season so the lakers could still be on his list if he wants to go someplace where it's sunny maybe maybe miami's gonna offer what they promised alonzo well that would probably be a better use of the funds yeah exactly i think the lakers are prepared to definitely go after him and they can give him an average of 15 million dollars over a seven-year deal but i was told that when in orlando's negotiations with shaq that have been ongoing they talked to him about seven years he does not want to play seven years but i think he will stay in orlando i think the last thing this guy wants to do is leave this place a loser you know it's interesting if he doesn't want to play seven years and what is he now 24 years old maybe and this is not a criticism just an observation maybe the younger generation of athletes doesn't look at a legacy the same way your generation did because here's a guy who has a chance if he's lucky he stays injury-free to be one of the greatest players of all time well you know i'm a stickler about longevity and i don't like to give guys props unless they play at least 10 years uh in the pros but you know the economics today uh makes it realistic that a guy can only play eight or nine years and be satisfied financially and satisfied with what he's done for his career if it's been validated by making some all-star teams making some all-pro teams uh possibly going to the finals and of course ultimately winning a championship i think shaquille's career won't be validated because of his talent unless he does win a championship so if that happens in the short term you might not see him around for 10 seasons how many years for you 16 16 seasons two leagues between the aba and the nba well perhaps it's only for pride but the magic might be taking the court for the final time this season game four the eastern conference finals coming right up mark albert and matt gucas will have the call the nba playoffs continue on nbc after these messages from your local station in michael jordan we see one of the greatest players of all time what we can't see is his will within his drive to accept all challenges his vision to be the best and for three straight years he saw no team do it better than his bulls then the challenge was gone and michael left last year jordan returned with his sights set on another title but the orlando magic stopped them dead in their tracks the moment that i had against orlando i was in control of the ball i lost the ball we lost the game that was not the characteristics of my game and hopefully i could redeem myself for what happened last year now jordan has the chance for redemption and he and his teammates have responded with a suffocating defense that has ignited the bulls to three straight victories michael has seen his teammates rise to the occasion playing with the fire and determination that is the bulls one win away from a trip to the finals but one giant roadblock still stands in the way [Music] so [Music] [Applause] i want it [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] this is the nba on nbc the 1996 nba conference finals on an 88 degree day in orlando we welcome you to game four of the eastern conference final although there is still some hope here in the orlando area the chicago balls just one game away from another trip to the nba championship series while the orlando magic are seeking to hang on to avoid elimination hi everybody i'm marv albert along with matt gookas and for michael jordan matt this has been a different type of series after accounting for better than 40 percent of the chicago scoring in the previous playoff series against the knicks nixie has not been the dominant force although you still get the feeling that he is lurking particularly come fourth quarter well so far michael has gotten a lot of help from all of his friends but in particular dennis rodman in game one dominating the glass with 21 rebounds and shipping in with 13 points game two michael and scotty turned up the heat and jordan himself outscored orlando 17 to 16 in that third quarter game three pippins best all-around blocks dennis scott and strips heart away and then the nifty move along the baseline you get the feeling that michael jordan scottie pippen and dennis robin just will not let this bulls team lose and orlando is now an injury hit ball club horace grant remains sidelined because of the elbow problem nick anderson now out with a sprained wrist will not play today brian shaw and john koncak are expected to play while the injuries are certainly a factor this series matt comes down to the cold fact that orlando's two all-star players shaquille o'neal and penny hardaway just have not been able to do it well so much is expected from these two young stars now they are scoring but the team needs more shaq has too many turnovers not enough blocks and the six for 24 from the line even has shaquille shaking his head now penny hardaway poured in 38 points in the game one blowout but only three assists a game and too many turnovers shaq and penny must not only play well they must make their teammates better all right for more on the bulls and the magic let's check in with ahmad rashad and jim gray all right thanks mark i was talking to assistant coach jim clemons before the game and he said there were a few points that he wanted to make to the team and the first of those points was they want to maintain their intensity and also execute their offense the other thing they were concerned about was giving orlando easy points off a turnover they don't believe that with the lineup they have they can score easily so they don't want to give them the easy points off the turnover and the third thing was to continue to rebound and play the defense they've been playing the entire series another thing i talked about chicago being overconfident in game three i talked to michael jordan about that he said well some of my teammates are a little overconfident they're talking about sweep but he said i gotta remind him and it's not about sweep right now it's about winning one game and moving on now for the orlando side let's go down to jim gray all right thank you very much invite well i spoke with several of the orlando magic players and many of them privately concede that the comeback from o3 against the bulls will be virtually impossible i then went on to ask those same players if in fact anybody on the team would quit they all said no they said no today is about respect and pride well if they lose today this will be the third straight time three years in a row that they will have been swept at some point in the playoffs i put that to shaquille o'neal and he told me playing it simply that will not happen i cannot take that kind of embarrassment it would be the worst embarrassment of my professional life and i couldn't stand the summer of that kind of shame mark all right thank you jim so coming up it's game four of the eastern conference final series the magic and the balls from the arena [Music] florida as we get set to show you the starting lattice the last team that was swept from the playoffs in three straight seasons the chicago stanks of the late 40s the stags led by max ceslovski and andy phillips and orlando does not want to be on that the same line in the nba record books with the chicago stags a look at the chicago bulls starting lineup michael jordan and ron hoffer in the backcourt and up front luke longley with scottie pippen and dennis rodman pippen coming off a sensational 27 point game on saturday afternoon phil jackson who said when he met brian hill before game three out at half quarter shake his hand he asked him what next could go wrong to his team well he found out during the game when nick anderson went down with the risk problem and as we check out the magic bottle you'll know a couple of changes well penny hardaway is there but anthony bowie will start four nick anderson boy made only four starts during the regular season shaquille o'neal the starting center dennis scott still trying to fight his way out of the shooting slump and it will be john concocted with some thought that joe wolfe would get the call but uh koncak will be the starter despite the knee problem there's brian hill the head coach of the magic yesterday on show time pete bessie reported that brian hill might be in trouble there could be interest in chunk daily while john gabriel the magic general manager told our jim gray earlier that hill is not in trouble he said that hill will return next season as orlando's coach well i would tend to believe john gabriel because first of all at this time of the year you're not even thinking about or talking about however but during a playoff series there's always that kind of talk about coaching changes especially the way this series has gone danny crawford working with new holland and dick pavetta and uh on the opening tip uh the ruling that the ball apparently someone jumped into quickly on the part of the chicago bulls was michael jordan trying to get the edge so it is orlando with the first possession as hard away works against pippin we're just underway in game four ottawa and o'neal is foul well brian hill and his coaching staff putting in a couple of new wrinkles and a couple of new plays at yesterday's practice and this is one of them getting a pick and roll to the middle of the floor something that's been very difficult for them to do because the bulls have been forcing their pick and rolls from that silence down to the baseline but this one got kenny hard away to the middle and a good pass to sack foul committed by longley and shaq gets the crowd going following up on the one for nine on saturday by hitting his first two light pressure being shown as dennis scott hangs back against scottie pippen jordan is being played here at the start by bowie [Applause] sets the pick only with the shot well the bull's taking a lot of time as the magic defense pressuring them into not a good look on any kind of offense the key for chicago is keeping luke lawley and dennis rodman out of early foul trouble that's what happened to them in game two and that's how orlando got an 18-point lead o'neil again led by hardaway it's a four-nothing magic lead scottie pippen thought he saw the opening dennis scott able to stay with him the orlando magic tried to bounce back from an embarrassing performance here on saturday held to just 67 points second lowest in nba playoff history since the advent of the 24-second uh shot clock has been firing from downtown and kept alive by rodman [Applause] well right away you can see the fervor and the passion in the magic's defense to start this ball game out something different michael jordan putting the bulls on the scoreboard [Applause] of the crowd looking for a flagrant foul call but it it is a personal foul michael jordan just getting that little handoff from dennis robin and a good look at shaquille guarding rodman too slow to get out and challenge jordan's shot and that was called a non-shooting foul jordan able to deflect it to the backcourt oh jordan got picked off the steal by scott hardaway oh the magic opening up in very alert fashion we did not see this at all on saturday and you have to wonder why barb it's just a matter of getting ready and playing at a playoff type intensity and that's what we're seeing here at the beginning of this ball game for orlando chicago looking a lot like the magic especially in games one and three away from the ball called on orlando could not get started in game one and they were blown out they could not finish game two as the bulls came back from an 18-point deficit and they had the horrendous performance in game three on saturday off the double team the foul is called orlando attempting to trap jordan and comcast picks up a quick two chicago has had a lot of success getting out and running after turnovers after steal and dennis rodman sensing that pass to scottie pippen step right in and pick his pocket and finds hart away [Applause] alfieman one one-on-one with scott yeah normally keeps it alive and then stripped by scott hart away with it all the way and it's orlando eight chicago two and phil jackson stoically sitting on the bench barely watching the action a little upset with his team probably warning them for two days that something like this could happen if his ball club wasn't ready but michael jordan is showing that he is ready michael heading on his first two field goal attempts jordan coming off a very quiet game here on saturday also late in the game came up with a twisted ankle but says he's all right and they're showing no signs of the ankle problem o'neill gets inside and rod been able to punch out for the rebound good defensive job oh that's scott almost with another steal offer changed his mind jordan with the show the ball move on hardaway and the bulls will maintain possession [Applause] and really going it is still chicago in command off the board that's been the story of this series as well when you have dennis robin on the floor that's going to be the case most of the time lovely goes to the hook shot and the rebound taken by hardaway scott for three dennis scott who has been struggling has not been able to hit not only the downtown shot from the two-point shot he was two for his previous 13 in the series orlando up 11-4 offered trying to get out [Music] well this is what the orlando magic wanted from dennis scott from the beginning of the series and something he's done all season long find that three-point line in transition catch and fire and that time he had scottie pippen all over him hand in the face and it didn't matter because right now the magic are playing with such high emotion you'll recall they opened up in strong fashion on saturday but were not able to maintain it magic leading here 11-4 here's scott to the reverse [Applause] and it's orlando up 13-4 and as you say phil jackson just riding it out [Applause] well one way to get yourself going is to play tough aggressive defense which is what dennis scott has been doing and that's why his body is so alive at the offensive end that's the fifth turnover committed by the bulls and three have been traveling violations [Music] stop passing off the three o'neal backing his way and hitting shaquille with [Applause] and phil jackson knows there will be a timeout soon as we hit the 659 mark and under on that dead ball ron hopper with his first field goal orlando magic hoping to bring this series to a fifth game which would take place in chicago on wednesday night oh that's [Applause] shaquille o'neal who just had some words for dennis rodman as they headed up court they have been sniping at each other right throughout the series the recall shaquille referred to rodman as a gimmick and rodman has been saying well she healed oh first break for the magic scott for three longley gets to it has been saying well o'neill will be a great player someday nice move by by michael jordan he's three of three has six points and it's the magic 17 the balls eight and at the other end dennis rodman barking at the official danny crawford saying he was thrown to the floor the bulls are still getting their running opportunities as the magic and then some of that emotion starting to wear off a little slow getting back on defense [Applause] quarter they are up 17-8 [Applause] attempt from downtown two of 13 from a three-point range prior to that only one for seven from downtown in game number three we asked dennis his thoughts on the shooting problems it's just one of those things that i guess we as shooters go through when uh the ball just don't want to go in the basket and then when i finally do get some good looks sometimes i guess in this series they've been coming far in between and i found myself sometimes rushing or getting over anxious that oh i finally got a good look and i'm not shooting my normal shot and you know it's something you go through well the only way you get out of it is keep shooting but i'm trying to guard myself to not taking you know bad shots or start making myself and hurt the team worse and we're already being down over three i don't want to come out and start jacking up crazy shots making everything look worse than what it is well throughout the course of the season dennis scott benefited by all the double teaming on shaquille o'neal and penny hardaway he would generally get open for those three-point shots it has not happened in this series another alert play by the magic they've been swarming defensively here at the start they lead 17-8 anthony bowie blocked jordan got a piece of a contact right there and it's orlando 19 chicago 8. uh even the picks are better for orlando shaquille o'neal has set a couple of very good ones on pick and rolls and earlier we saw john conking almost level michael jordan near mid-court illegal defense call for the first time let's check in with ahmad rashad mark doing that last time out phil jackson very calmly reminding his team that they expected this kind of intensity the crowd behind her and everything but said that with their uh experience they should be able to win the storm a lot of ball game left they just got to start chipping away at it all right thank you about one hopper helping to chip away at it with a three offer with five points and it's the magic by eight just under five minutes romani ron harper's shooting has been very poor in this series but his defense has been exceptional [Music] [Applause] trying the spin balls and was shoved by long leg so luke committing his second well most of this series shaq has stayed going to the middle against luke longley and has a lot of success on the spin to the baseline against wennington he figured i might as well try it on somebody else and now phil jackson's going to come with blue coach and goes small to try to reverse the momentum of this ball game will sit down after collecting his second foul substitution for orlando donald royal checking in and john conjack hears it from the crowd it's been a gallon effort by john koncak who was a a question mark for both games three and today's game four because of the knee problem kukov called for the hole now that is team foul number four on the bulls orlando with three well penny hardaway who has averaged just three assists a game in the three games played so far already has three today popper off the board as it poked away but a foul reach and paul on royal orlando very aggressive defensively showing the passion and the heart that they seem to lack in game three and when you start a game out mar with that kind of aggression and if you can keep it up for long periods you'll get the benefit of most calls from the referees but if you start out sluggishly not moving your feet not getting after people not bumping and then trying to do it later in the game you will not get the benefit of the call [Applause] fan of defense from the crowd jordan working on bowie shot clock at five tipping for three now scottie pippen who was having his difficulties from three-point range has certainly been able to find the touch at three of four from downtown on saturday 1914 atlanta hard away trying to set up all made pass but shaquille made the recovery and it's the magic 21 and the bulls 14. shaquille o'neal with 10 points in this first quarter well penny hardaway felt pressure they got a pressure release he just drove through everybody was going to attack that rim and finally the dish off the shack [Applause] [Music] well nothing tentative about the attack at all at either end of the floor for orlando so far this afternoon penny getting into the middle of the lane could have been a foul on rodman as he moved his feet and stepped over and forced the bump with shaq able to dig out that loose ball and finish [Applause] michael jordan who had difficulty at the foul line an unusual fashion on saturday six of 11 at the line both clubs have problems chicago 18 for 31 orlando 10 of 24. how about the two teams combining missing the five technical fouls that were attempted it was a full moon the other day 20 21-16 orlando three and a half to go it was first quarter miscommunication between buoy and hardaway penny felt he was grab it does a wise thing there doesn't argue with the official something that was a problem for him on saturday holes with six turnovers for the magic their second robin gets inside on the finger roll and dennis hears it from the crowd i didn't know where he was on the floor never located the rim [Applause] rebound punched aside by o'neal and out of bounds brooks thompson getting set to check in halving weighed down replacing anthony boy brian hill working with a short bench although he does have brian shaw available despite the neck problem he sat out on on saturday this has been the difference in this first quarter and it's been the other way around in the first three games in this series but orlando definitely the most aggressive team on the floor at this moment [Music] now from orlando's point of view although dennis rodman has certainly picked it up offensively they do not mind seeing rockman take those kind of shots kiel set the pick scott eluding pippin [Applause] [Music] [Applause] the magic with the shot clock rolling down timeout taken by chicago you are watching the nba on nbc [Music] welcome back to orlando i'm jim gray i'm now joined by leonard armado he is the agent for shaquille o'neal we saw the interview with shaquille during the pre-game show in which he said this is his first option to stay in orlando leonard there was also some talk about brian hill first let's ask you about shaquille o'neal will he stay here in orlando or go to los angeles well first of all i just want to let peter bessie know that the reason i didn't return this call this week because i knew he was going to try to stir up all this controversy well now that he has done that will shaq stay well shaq and i have a pact that during the playoffs we don't have any discussion substantively about where he'll be next year as he said orlando is definitely his first choice but you know after the season's over we've got to evaluate all of his options now chuck daley's name has been mentioned is it more appealing to shaquille o'neal to have chuck daly here as coach would it be more appealing for him to stay here well it's difficult to say chuck daley is one of the greatest coaches of all time but brian hill's doing a great job this quarter this quarter what about brian hill and his relationship with shaquille um you know shaquille said and i think it goes for me too brian's a coach she kills the player and that's the way it stands until anything changes that's the way it stands but you would not be opposed to having another coach specifically chuck daley no i'm not saying that i'm just saying that after the season's over a coach as well as all the other factors will be one of the considerations thank you very much try to enjoy the game now that you've been grilled marv all right thank you uh jim not that uh brian hill will be uh concerned with leonard armas see rich devos the chairman of the orlando magic not that he'd be concerned with a vote of confidence from leonard our motto but that was not exactly a ringing endorsement that brian is doing a fine job in the first quarter and by the way that man rich devos one of brian hill's biggest supporters and fans and i'm sure he'll have a lot to say with whatever goes on with this organization to come the off-season two and a half remaining in the first quarter and the magic up 22-16 [Applause] cut to the lane he was held by scott for dennis scott and now orlando over the limit so tony coach who has been quiet during the course of the playoffs on the line who coached during the regular season just killed the magic tony kuch coming back from the lower back injury that put him out of the knicks series missed the final three games of that series playing 20 minutes here on saturday hit only one of five from the field [Applause] chicago has been able to cut into that 11-point deficit it is now a four-point orlando league [Music] thompson garnered by kerr who just came on already with four assists he had just three in 46 minutes in game three we have not seen him posting up a lot in this series something he does a lot against every other team but pipping a little taller he's been a little reluctant to do it [Applause] now then scott is guarding michael jordan and hits from downtown jordan is four for four he has 11. it's the magic 24 cables 11. well there's no question orlando coming out giving the bulls their best shot the thing that has to worry that the bulls are taking it and right in this ballgame waterway checking the clock as he backs his way now looking for a foul [Applause] [Applause] he has 13 points and he's brought the goals within one well very difficult matchup on the floor for orlando right now dennis scott can run around with scottie pitman pretty much the same height michael george is too quick for him 15-5 run by chicago [Applause] well the magic and penny hardaway in particular though if they can get to the basket nobody to block a shot pippin takes it the distance and draws the foul and he went flying while michael jordan is feeling it and it looks like he wants the ball in every offensive situation isolated against dennis scott here just putting the ball on the floor a little pump fake getting him off balance to knock down the shot and then penny hardaway working one-on-one against scottie pippen beats him with the nice spin move and nobody home underneath the basket and pippin wanting to bounce back just making sure he draws some kind of contact as he gets to the basket and his free-throw shooting woes continue [Applause] and here is randy brown providing a respite for michael jordan randy brown the solid defensive player in his fifth season out of new mexico state so we were talking at the start that although michael has not been dominant offensively in this series the ball will go back to orlando you always have the feeling that he is lurking out there more than lurking in this first quarter 13 points on five of five shooting three-point orlando lead now to 15 seconds with eight on the shot clock remaining in the first quarter hard away for [Applause] extending to three six-point lead here's two coats for three [Applause] with two and two ten seconds to go in the first quarter as hardaway and piffin got involved [Applause] and a frustration foul on the part of pippin here as cuco set up by pippin on that drive and dish out and pippin upset that he got beat on that spin move and looked bad defensively on that earlier play by hardaway then he took hardaway's left-hand move away in the lane gave him the three-pointer which hard away nailed and then pitbull actually wanted to go the basket himself in his way and have a chase it's been an outstanding first quarter for penny hardaway he has hit five of eight from the field [Music] michael jordan has returned for the final two seconds of the quarter big scoring outburst for the magic in seven of the twelve quarters coming into this game held up 20 points and under kukos pops it down [Music] [Applause] and they're hearing it from this crowd michael jordan with a perfect first quarter 13 points in all strong effort by shaquille o'neal and penny hardaway after what it's the magic 31 the bulls 23 you're watching the nba on nbc nbc the 1996 nba playoffs penny hardaway the key to the success of the magic in this first quarter during the regular season he averaged seven assists just under three turnovers per game and you can see in this series over the first three it has not been the usual hardaway output but today four assists in the first quarter has not turned it over in fact his number deceiving because he had opened up with a 38 point in the blow out a 38-point game in game number one in chicago today five of eight 13 points two or three from the line in fact orlando with 31 points that's the most they've scored in a quarter of the series well the responsibility of a great player is to make your teammates better and he has all of that ability he can do it himself he can get others involved but with the starting lineup of the magic the normal one nick anderson is there you've got five very good players very talented who all like to touch and have the basketball and like to get their shots and you have more of a role player in there in your lineup now hardaway can do some different things he can take more responsibility as far as scoring himself and still get the ball to the key people well you know phil jackson likes this matchup he has tony cucos being guarded by anthony bowie and off the head fake cuckoos drew the foul on bowie that's his second well the magic with only 67 points in game three bushel having trouble nearly stolen by royal 31 in the first quarter following the 67 for the entire game on saturday chicago not anticipating all this pressure defense from orlando they're making some lazy passes [Applause] and continues the superb shooting six for six from the field he has 15 michaels excuse me michael saw the double team coming and quickly spun to the baseline for what has now become his patented fade away jump shot the magic 31 pulls 25. scott was about to load it up but an illegal defense ball on chicago that is the first call against the bulls a michael jordan catching out of the corner of his eyes the move by donald royal to come double knew that he could take that quick hard step and explode into the air and shoot over the smaller buoy other way it's more of the last nine points for the orlando magic found as called as the royal took the [Applause] push that is his first i said the smaller buoy actually anthony bowie and michael jordan about the same height 6'5 or so but when michael gets into the air he all of a sudden becomes taller much taller than anthony [Applause] in the first half against dennis rodman who in this series has done a terrific job not only on the court physically but you get the idea he has gotten into the head of that foul and called on tony but because there is so little double teaming of shaq these defenders have to play him straight up normally you would shade towards the middle because that's where the double team is coming shaq now three for three from the line and i think that's why shaquille is getting that little opening on the baseline and really making a good quick hard move with terrific footwork to the baseline throughout this series over the first three games shaq's six of 24 at the foul and he's followed up for one for nine on saturday with a four for four thus far 33 25 orlando we are early in the second quarter marv albert with matt dufus ahmad rashad and jim gray from the arena they doubled up on jordan and michael and a crowd got blocked a smart play by michael jordan you can just tell in his body language he feels the magic of getting the benefit of a lot of calls he was just going to drive into a white shirt and see if he couldn't get a call he didn't like that last call against him almost a make-up call in fact a makeup fall [Applause] coach nice touch live coach that is his first field goal 33-27 orlando [Applause] comes [Music] has done a terrific job gaming and game out coming off the bench does not get many minutes but he has certainly made the most of it when he's been on the floor well steve kerr actually out paddled shaquille o'neal and knocked that ball loose he almost got his body knocked hard to the floor three-point magic lead here [Music] is a three-point shooting specialist in a second year out of oklahoma state extends to a six-point orlando advantage for three and he continues [Applause] [Music] [Applause] do or die for the jazz against the sonics tuesday night at night eastern on nbc life's funny you never know what to expect but you do with the toyota corolla it comes equipped with a 20 sensor system to help ensure things are exactly as you'd expect at every turn [Music] life's full of surprises your car shouldn't be one of them the newly restyled toyota corolla it's where 28 years of innovation have taken us [Music] for the very first time [Music] in the long and storied history of the kentucky derby the preakness and the belmont states there's an absolute 100 pure thing if you try to use american express you won't get in because the only card accepted at the gate is visa it's everywhere you want to be what's up sandy hi lisa hey jennifer what's up linda hey guys huh hey you know something kind of different about the girls this semester yeah now that you mention it they're all wearing that pepsi stuff now drink a lot of pepsi collect a lot of points get a lot of cool stuff you notice anything different about the basketball team pepsi stuff [Music] the nba on nbc is brought to you by the pepsi cola company now the more pepsi you drink the more great stuff you're gonna get by toyota and their full line of quality cars and trucks toyota i love what you do for me and by nike who encourages you to participate in the lives of america's youth well during the course of this series there's been much verbal sniping between dennis robin and shaquille o'neal robin has certainly done an effective job defending against shakira we asked shaq about the matchup i think dennis knows that he can't play me one-on-one i mean the rules is one arm and arm has to be halfway i mean he puts two hands in the back and the knee in the crotch you still can't hold me so i mean but this is not a then this robin shack thing and i'm gonna just go and play my game and i only speak when i'm spoken to let me just go out and play well nobody can really hold shaq but dennis rodman is averaging 16 rebounds a game so far in the series and an unexpected 12 points a game so far shut out from the field magic 36 and the ball's 30 with three minutes gone by in the second quarter beautiful hole five to ken o'neil he now has 14 points and it's orlando by eighth luke longley has returned longley with pippen and robin up front jordan and kerr in the backboard longley playing with the two fouls well he surprised rodman lonely trapped had nowhere to go and then look to give it up now shaq has had so much success with the spin to the baseline now looks like the defenders are taking that away nice little shoulder fake to get lonely to fight on the baseline side and shaq has really developed that little jump hook into the lane very nicely oil kept it alive but rottman on the recovery again it's scott defending on jordan he goes around him and then took a hard hit shaquille o'neal [Applause] michael gets into when he senses his team is struggling and in trouble he's not going to just rely on the jump shot all the time he's just going to put that head down try to draw some contact and get to the foul line and get other people who found trump [Applause] [Music] he has 17 points now three years ago against the new york knicks on memorial day michael jordan with a 54-point performance he has 17 and we're early second quarter thompson wrongly with the rebound [Applause] thinking the bulls had a fast break opportunity and forgotten to protect the basketball [Applause] harper did not like the hands of thompson on him offer from downtown jordan with the offensive board [Applause] [Music] shot his first field goal and it's a 40-34 orlando league i don't know if you can sense the look or see the look on the face of michael jordan as penny hardaway is challenging him with his defense michael loves that kind of thing but so far penny has done a pretty good job joe wolf getting set to check in for the first time a timeout has been called with 6 44 remaining in the first half it's the magic with a six point lead the steal by shank for two of his 16 points and on the other end it's jordan for longleaf for his first field goal we'll be right back orlando by 6 6 44 to go in this first half a reminder tomorrow nba playoff active will move to prime time 9 p.m eastern shore camp and the sonics going up against carmel over the jazz game five of the western conference finals terrific game yesterday seattle able to hold on for the win and they are up three games to one sonics and jazz tomorrow nine o'clock easton right here on nbc [Applause] you saw the impressive stat line of michael jordan who's been perfect penny hardaway holding up the his own with six of nine 15 points and hugh hollins with the call away from the ball [Music] well there michael not needing as much scoring throughout this game for game one was a blowout he just kind of stood around and occasionally chipped in when he had to he had to turn it on that third quarter of game two michael with his first miss a good call coming out of that last timeout a post up for penny hardaway sometimes the magic fall into that trap of thinking they have the mismatch and they do with shaquille o'neal but that gets other people standing around a different look to penny from time to time could get other [Applause] michael once again every time he gets the opportunity wants to drop that head and drive to the basket this time he avoided the contact unable to finish that shot but dennis rodman who's been quiet on the boards finally got in there illegal defense second call against the bulls and uh hardaway not able to hit and so the the technical foul jinx that struck on saturday continues here this afternoon michael jordan hitting his first seven shots before that miss the all-time nba playoff record best shooting percentage in a single game scott whitman 11 for 11. hit it for the celtics against the lakers back in may of 85. also did it on memorial day and the foul is gone [Applause] no absolutely not that's the one that can get him into trouble foolish foul there because dennis is going to be involved a lot down low with shaq where he's going to have to take some foul trying to pressure joe wolf on the perimeter unnecessary [Applause] in this first half [Applause] 44-46 the magic by eight hoffer out of penetration and a loose ball foul called on [Music] when he is off the ball involved in pick and rolls or just on the weak side just go in there and get some second shot opportunities and at the other end of the floor instead of challenging that shot shaquille o'neal got all tangled up with dennis robin and called for the elbow in the throat so shaquille with two fouls dennis robin during a regular season just a 52 free-throw shooter offer sitting down and georgia [Applause] orlando magic trying to stay alive with his best of seven leading by seven points they have led all the way they've led by as many as 11. her putting the pressure on thompson with the steal and called for time and the call it should be noted who has not been a favorite official in recent years of the chicago world a much better pressure on the partner chicago bulls steve kerr all over brooks thompson hardaway being battled by pippin inside and a terrific dive by steve kerr to get the timeout conventional halftime report we'll talk about the western conference finals in which seattle now leads utah three games to one after the dramatic win yesterday game five is tomorrow night here on nbc we'll talk live with the sonic shooting guard hersey hawkins and we'll get the analysis of julius irving and peter bessie on the first half of bulls magic orlando will win away from elimination but leading right now by seven as we send it back to the old arena marv albert matt cooper samad rashad and jim gray and stuff thank you bob well a call that was disputed by penny of hardaway just a moment ago steve kerr was able to dive and come up with the time out penny is uh letting the official know that steve kerr should not have been able to call this timeout because both players had possession or tied up and had four hands on the basketball nevertheless kerr got the call he was shouting it i think as he dove to the floor asking for that timeout kerr being defended tightly by thompson scotty pippen has been quiet only one of five from the field jordan with the step and rebounded by o'neill jack with 18. michael jordan that's a backcourt violation looks thompson who had some shaky moments handling the ball in game three turns it over right there he was surprised by penny throwing him the ball in that situation penny hardaway the primary ball handle right now brooks thompson occasionally plays some point guard but with hardaway bringing it out of the backcourt his responsibility to get it into the front court [Applause] four and a half [Applause] is really having his problems at both ends of the floor no surprise bill weddington hasn't gotten a call phil jackson just went down and got him yes bill weddington making his way to the scorers table [Applause] and a push is called it's on the balls [Applause] and phil really struggles with the strength in the strengths department trying to keep shaq from moving either into the middle or the spin baseline but what bill can do for the other end is spread the floor a little bit run some pick and pops and he's effective with that 16-foot jump shot [Applause] well penny hardaway forced to the baseline there but donald royal doing the smart thing not standing around looking for a lane to cut into and he was the benefit of an easy two imagine spreading the floor that bill rennington provides but he was not able to hit that open jump shot thompson that's why brooks thompson is on the floor particularly with the magic shorthanded in fact we're told that brian shaw who was supposed to play after sitting out for the neck injury in game three will not be able to play on the bench but uh unable to perform with goals with the offensive rebound apparently the muscle spasms got worse and a late whistle there as michael was forced to the baseline side and the whole magic crowd reacting obviously a little shoved there by penny hardaway as george fell down but it was a late whistle and that's why the crowd is reacting shaquille reacting and then penny hardaway for the most part has not been griping with the officials as he did in game two but he started you right there and the veteran anthony bowie coming over to get into pennies here say hey leave the referees along just keep playing your game we need you out here play not barking at the referees orlando with that foul going over the limit tony kukos back on the floor replacing steve kerr who did not score o'neill trying to save it and step down i guess a very sincere pack from dennis rodman well shaq actually took his eye off the ball here and missed it completely bouncing off his chest and trying to save it and throwing it as hard as he could off dennis robin i'm sure if he had the opportunity again he throw it even higher if he could orlando by 10. just under three left first half kristen got inside nice fake by scottie pippen it's only his second field goal ryan hill has o'neill up front now out of wolf and royal with bouillon hard away at the guards hardaway guarded by pippin with a change of pace dribble and forces it up [Applause] [Music] able to save [Applause] it thought wellington looking very tentative passing it up an open shot and forcing a bad one therefore draws the foul donald royal who can take it to the basket extremely effectively with that first step and when he's getting the playing time spends much time at the foul line he's a slashing style play here's the driving move by donald royal in his seventh nba season out of notre dame originally a third round draft pick of cleveland spent some time in the cba played over in israel back to the nba with san antonio this is fourth year with the matchup well last year donald had been a starter for much of the year and then injured his ankle in the late in the playoffs and lost that starting spot to dennis scott and kind of lost confidence in himself coaching staff losing confidence him brian shaw not available now he's saying he is he is done for the game but donald roy may not be a perimeter threat but he is certainly a threat to the fallon because he can take the ball so hard to the hole magic up 50 40. in the first half [Applause] [Applause] just a little smirk and no complaint from phil jackson they all knew what happened on the play as rob as uh jordan trying to escape that double team minute in the first half oh look out [Music] let's see how the officials handle this one dennis rodman in a conversation with several members of the orlando magic this one was brewing right now dennis has been starting now he's milling around got into a little verbal altercation with brian hill and they continue to jaw at one another as there's been some hard hitting there the show by shaquille o'neal and brian hill walking out towards dennis rodman richie adubato protecting brian how good that's going to be right now but [Music] when you're a teammate of dennis rodman or a chicago fan this is what you always worry about with dennis rodman the fireworks starting and you just don't know what's going to go off double technical called on rodman and o'neill o'neal who was fouled lions drives the first call he's five of five at the line oh shaq hit him one two three hard times and dennis rodman just trying to grab on to shaq and maybe instigate a little bit with the grab and he did what he he wanted to do he got shaq to react with a push so difficult to figure out shaquille o'neal's inconsistent free-throw shooting a loose ball foul is called joe wolfe happening for the rebound up his second both teams are over the foul of it so the bulls to the line that's what you're going to say so difficult to figure out dennis right there's an understatement that his team right now is a little bit lethargic they kind of weathered the storm uh for much of the first quarter when the magic came out and played with a great deal of emotion now i think he senses his team going backwards he's trying to do something to uh to get them fired up and of course get himself fired up he's gonna go to the bench for a rest right now well this is sparked up orlando team in this first half in particular right at the start an orlando team playing without nick anderson who suffered the the wrist injury late in game three brian thrawn dressed and uh on the bench it was thought he'd be able to play after sitting out on saturday with the muscle spasms in his neck now he he started the game but uh has not played much today [Music] off the steel here comes pushler of course horace grant is out for the elbow and things getting very rough under the board the last offensive sequence for the orlando magic bowie catching the ball deep in the left corner looking for that lob play to shaquille o'neal john sally did a terrific defensive job of just bumping shaquille off enough and then the weak side defense by judd bushel to come up with the steal and then sally had a little easy layup but he just squeezed it out of his hand no wolf very popular player here in orlando hearing the wolf cry from another crowd in his ninth season out of north carolina for one year he was a teammate of michael jordan with the tar heels during the regular season started eight games at the power four position contact is back and shaquille o'neal hears it from the crowd seven of nine from the field 19 points for shaq had to be a last uh two games a difficult situation for for joe wolfe i'm sure driving to the arena expecting to start both ball games because john conker's availability unknown with that sort knee and and joe wolf not starting either i think it looks like it's affecting him mentally right now he has a very quizzical look on his face but he has been coming off the bench all year long for for the orlando magic and making a nice contribution matt measuring the quizzical look on the face of joe wolf he looks like that all the time huh even more very very pensive shot clock at five bushler for three yes bushler two of two from downtown and it's the magic by eight points with 40 seconds remaining in the half [Applause] fart away checking the clock as he resets [Applause] they are on their feet here in orlando down to five jordan facing the double team finding pippin and tiffany now committed by donald royal with nine tenths of a second from ending in the half joe wolfe has that nice 16 to 18 foot jump shot and has shot at well all year not known as a three-point shooter but he had to rush this one with just one second on the shot clock with scottie pippen right in his face now pippin to the line he is old for coo at the line and pippin and royal having some words scotty felt that the donald royal put a little extra into that as donald rose actually faked out of his shoes trying to grab on and make sure pippin did not lay that ball up a good defensive job by bowie i mean his double team just right coming out turned out to be not right because they got a free throw shooting opportunity but coming out to double team jordan make him give up the ball thompson comes on for comcat and now indicating a 22nd timeout called by orlando nine tenths of a second remaining in this first half the chicago bulls with a 3-0 lead in this best of seven eastern conference final [Music] a look back at uh game one chicago in a blowout in chicago dennis rodman 13 points 21 rebounds and penny hardaway with the 38-point game as uh the bulls just crunched the magic off the boards game number two chicago came from behind shaquille o'neal had the big first half 26 of his 36 in the first half but sparked by michael jordan with 17 of his 35 in the the third bulls came back from an 18 point deficit and then here saturday in game number three chicago with the 86-60 destruction of orlando's scottie pippen broke out with 27 points on 11 of the 14 from the field so 67 points for the magic on saturday here in the first half they have already scored 56. it is 56-47 hardaway can he get it off and that is the end of the first half shaquille o'neal with 19. penny hardaway with 15. that man michael ford with 20 points on seven of nine from the field bob costas and the prudential halftime report coming up after these words high prudential live well make a plan be your own rock halftime in orlando the magic showing some grit and leading the bulls by nine 56-47 not to put a damper on it but remember they led by 15 at halftime of game two as well bob costa's back julia serving peter vessey here of course interesting numbers from this first half the most important one orlando leading it 56-47 jordan had 20 points he made his first seven shots from the field shaq has 19 points on seven of nine and he's hit five of six from the free-throw line let's see what julius and peter have to say about it let's begin with you mr bessie well i don't think there's any surprise you're seeing a team that's 160 games during the regular season playing for pride here what i wonder is where was the aggression the first three games where was the pressure on the defense you see it today they're running off makes they're running off misses they're running off turnovers they've got 15 points off of 10 chicago turnovers the most surprising thing to me is orlando has 14 15 points off its bench and that you've got two of their bench guys starting so maybe their bench wasn't as bad as we thought doctor well when you shoot 61 from the field you should be ahead but the effort is superior today uh the guys will supposed to set picks on plays are setting them with authority they got the swarming defense working orlando's playing the type of game that they needed to play today but they got another half to play good luck penny with 15 points by the way in the first half and six assists he had just nine assists in the first three games combined coming into this one the french open tennis championships began today in paris no major upsets on the men's side top seed pete sampras won in straight sets taking the third in a tie break third seed andre agassi had more difficulty in the reign at roland garros losing a second set tie break before taking the last two sets four and four and jim currier the number seven seed also was pushed a bit needing a tie break in the third set before winning in four on the women's side co number one seed monica selas got little resistance sellus and steffi groff are both seated number one graff place tomorrow our coverage picks up on saturday note the early start [Music] wfla-tv your 1996 olympic station they come from every part of america training a lifetime for one chance at greatness they're our olympic athletes and this summer they're the home team the olympics americas games on nbc welcome back to orlando marv albert matt gucca somap rashad and jim gray orlando with the lead uh at the half and it was obvious right from the start this a different orlando team than we saw on saturday in game three they came up all sparked up well the emotion was there but so was the three-point shooting the foul shooting and most important they took care of the basketball only six turnovers and if they can continue to do that in the second half and they will be sorely tested they've got an excellent chance of winning this game let's check out the middle light halftime statistics the shooting for chicago 44 16 of 36. look at orlando 20 of 34 59 from the field michael jordan hit his first seven shots finished seven of nine in his 23 minutes for 20 points shaquille o'neal led orlando with 19 and both teams doing it at the foul line in contrast to game three chicago 10 for 14 orlando 12 of 15 and uh how about shank five of six from the line [Music] so it's the magic 56 and the bulls 47 as we head to the second half [Music] up here i feel like traffic is miles away with uconn's commanding view and accommodating size unlike some others i have virtually unlimited capacity uconn can make you feel invincible uconn by gmc it puts you comfortably in command [Music] [Music] he didn't pay they never do now snickers is even more peanuts tons of them [Music] to whom it may concern [Music] i've always loved the summer games the running the jumping it's all good even the shot put thing is pretty cool too still somehow i can't help feeling there's something missing me and that's why i think football should be an official event of the summer games let's have a meet and put this together that's my dream and this is my planet [Music] basketball didn't always come easy for scotty pippen the youngest of 12 he was not even recruited out of high school and his college career began as the equipment manager now this million to one shot is one of the nba's greatest players his dream will take him back to the olympics on nbc orlando up by nine as we approach the start of the second half remember orlando led by 15 at halftime in game two in chicago jordan the only bull in double figures with 20 19-4 o'neal and 15 for hard away before the second half gets underway let's go to a moderate shot all right thanks mark phil jackson telling his team that the problem was they're not running their offense also way too many turnovers did they have 10 in the first half and they can hold it down to five they'd be okay also the problem with penny hardaway let him get too deep in the blocks they want to try to keep him away from the basket more and not give him any easy baskets and in the words of randy brown who told me phil jackson basically told them to get their butts in gear all right let's go down to jim gray all right thank you very much ahmad i spoke with brian hill he was very pleased with the first half said it was the best half that he felt they had played in this entire series like the way that they protected the ball and he liked the tempo of the game he said we're going to continue to run and we'll continue to protect the ball [Applause] all right jim hardaway leading the way with six assists in that first half 12 assists for orlando and that a positive stat brian hill checks over the uh first half rundown here's michael jordan [Music] last touch by hoffer first possession for the chicago bulls but i think michael jordan knows as well as the rest of the chicago wolves he can't be the only one scoring he's going to have to get some other players involved and normally scotty pippen is the guy that has to pick it up first of all by scoring himself and then making some plays for others anthony bowie starting for the injured nick anderson here's bowie [Applause] terrific outlet pass by dennis rodman to send ron harper towards the basket but as he looked up he saw number 45 john contact standing there in saturday afternoon's game early in the game ron harper had a similar type of play at the other end of the floor and john hammered him hard and picked up a flagrant foul offer a 70 free throw shooter during the regular season that is his sixth point and it's the magic 56 and the balls 48. let's see how hard the bulls pick up the magic in the backward after this free throw situation it's tough to do it after this one but it's usually what they like to do in the third quarter put that pressure on create some turnovers and turn them into easy baskets with scott and concack on the front line bowie and a heart away in the backcourt and bowie lost it to hoffer two-on-one tipping with jordan got away with a grab and hold on anthony hardaway after he made that passing uh pass he grabbed on the hardaway so he couldn't attempt to foul or block the shot of jordan got away with it the magic lead is down to six a minute and a half gone by in the third o'neal the spin leading to the stop 21 for shaq it's orlando by eight the orlando magic looking to stay alive seeking a fifth game back in chicago on wednesday night and we'll be there if there is a game five on wednesday illegal defense against orlando their second violation oh good ball pressure on the part of ron harper as anthony bowie did not protect the ball and then that little grab with the left hand of pippin to hold hard away and uh right now shaquille o'neal he has it going to the middle he has the spin move and luke longley has three personal fouls but the way that he is playing at the offensive end i don't know how important a player is going to be for chicago of their turn 10 turnovers he's got five of them michael jordan breaks the string of missed technical fouls that's a streak ends at six combined by both clubs magic 58 and the bulls 51. chicago bulls on the other hand looking for a four-game sweep and then with uh like the rest period awaiting the winner between seattle and utah jordan michael getting the roll 25 for jordan and a five-point orlando league well the both will take the basket but they cannot be happy with the way that they're executing their offense too much standing around they look a little heavy-legged to start this third quarter here's scott going class and the scott has seven and it is orlando by seven harper got the step and was hit by hard away the magic slow in getting back down cool well the ball just being swung around the perimeter finally it goes into the hands of michael jordan with the shot clock winding down having to just take a jump shot over uh anthony bowie and then dennis scott leaning in as he's been taken off that three-point line time and time again by the chicago defense forcing him to put the ball on the floor defense from the crowd as scottie pippen teed it up and passed down the three halfer for three buoy knocking it out of the hands of rhonda and the bulls [Applause] the bulls say they want to take that shot and it is an open one from ron harper as they swing the ball as phil jackson calling that play because when you expect your teammates to take a shot and that's why dennis robin is such a good offensive rebounder he times it so well he knows where the shot's going to get up and he gets good position [Applause] able to get to it [Applause] [Music] rodman had it batted away by buoy but anthony bowie very active on the boards he's been contesting for every loose ball every rebound at both ends and that's been a factor the chicago bulls are having to settle for jump shots out of their offense and that's what the triangle offense will present to you a lot of time but they still have to get some slashes and drives to the basket to be effective long way setting the screen jordan trying to slice [Applause] it will be chicago ball with four on the shot clock it's amazing how the ball winds up in the hands of michael jordan or scottie pippen with that shot block winding down but they do have the ability to create make something happen no complaint by michael there good block by shaq pippen can't find anyone just did avoid the five-second violation [Applause] it's a 24-second violation 12th turnover for the ball well when you don't set good hard screens on underneath out of bounds play and come off hard you're going to get yourself in that situation and you have to expect it with just four seconds on the track the bulls so far kind of sleepwalking into this second half how we talked about this possibility yesterday with phillip jackson [Music] [Applause] but orlando is playing a different brand of basketball here this afternoon longley luke longley with the short hook to cut it to a seven point magic lead this is when the magic tried to overload that one side of the floor buoy likes to throw the alley-oo blob doesn't get an opportunity here there's the hearts yes and it counts and shaquille o'neal has been unstoppable with that move the head fake the spin and the stuff drawing the foul on longley for longley his fourth shaq just uses luke longley as a post he just leans into him and that freezes his body and then jack is really able to go either way and he's been very effective going into that baseline and james edwards will get a look as luke only did finally get a field goal on the last bulls beset possession but he has had his problems with this afternoon able to tear it away from rottman on the offensive board and a foul is born well you expect a miss from shaq on free throws no matter how well he's shooting it dennis rodman failed to block out penny hardaway [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] good job of shaq getting back in transition here's the strip by pippin to send this fast break going getting the ball to flip it in the middle and shaq hustling back to stop the lay-in 6 56 to go in the [Music] catch inside stuff saturday mornings on nbc this is it where brand new miller beer begins where the hops grow to give new miller beer its flavor because new miller beer is brewed a totally new way straight from the heart of the hops for flavor unlike any other beer big flavor that goes down easy we think so much of this new beer we're just calling it who we are command by 1-800 collect it's the way to call collect and by new miller b the brand new beer from miller with big flavor that goes down easy well a slice of life in the magic kingdom as we welcome you back marv albert with matt dukas about rashad and jim gray just under seven minutes to go in the third quarter and the magic leading the ball 64 55 a performance in contrast to what took place here on saturday orlando shooting 60 for the game on 24 of 40. orlando the first three games of this series shooting 43 so they have they picked it up but they've done it at both ends matt because the defense also has been a sparked up effort here this afternoon well that's generally what will happen if you get yourself moving around defensively and aggressive and then do a good job on the boards although they've given up 11 offensive rebounds to chicago but not not gotten hurt that much by second chance points michael jordan already with 26 in this game but still getting very little help offensively from his teammates still no one else in double figures jordan with 27 and not getting the help pippen is a two of eight from the field he has only seven points harper with six longleaf with four who goes with four bushler has six on a couple of three-pointers o'neal this time doing it against james edwards 66. orlando james sitting on that bench for a long time now over the last three games saying he's not going to beat me baseline anyway gave him the middle foot hits the three that is his second from downtown and he now has 30. the magic 66 the ball 60. [Applause] you see scottie pippen that time ushering penny hardaway up the right side of the floor knowing that shaq loves to set up on the left side he's trying to make him kill some klopp a holding foul made by hugh hollins the outside official on james edwards james edwards is not in there for his defense so he might as well take a hack in there when track is ready to shoot the ball he's in there to make a couple of turnaround jumpers nice little brush screen by ron harper anthony bowie trying to go over the top there michael jordan getting a good look at a three now three team fouls a piece joe wolfe is back replacing john concat steve kerr has checked in it has been all michael jordan for the balls he has accounted for 10 of chicago's 13 points in the third quarter and then picked up on the switch [Music] for three and rockman with his ninth rebound firing [Applause] after that rebound looked to the crowd put a fist in the air he knew he threw a bullet right into the hands of an excellent outlet [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] this is the kind of pressure that chicago will put on you in the third quarter just a little bit of a smile there by michael looking at you holland say hey if you're not going to let me do what i normally do we'll never get any steal [Applause] [Music] and [Applause] on the history of some great outlet passers wes unsell comes to mind who used to be able to make that in the air sometime grab that well he didn't stay in the air that long but west will take it and rifle that two-hander the length of the floor dennis robin right there hillary fair very good at that kind of type of outlet pass as well so dennis rodman saw a lot of that from bill throughout his uh career in detroit goals are now over the foul of it all the way taking advantage he now has 17 points and it's the magic 68 the bulls 62 as we approach five minutes left in the third [Applause] rodman at the high post now [Applause] shut seven jordan operating against yes and it counts a foul on bowie and jordan heads back to the line michael jordan single-handedly bringing the balls back with the shot clock winding down how many times have we said that michael in the post has felt very comfortable in his ability to spin away from anthony bowie going up for that jump shot michael sees that double team coming from the weak side joe wolfe three-point play by jordan here's the trap by the balls jordan has 33 points [Music] the orlando lead is down to three [Applause] [Music] yes [Music] five-point lead for the matchup [Applause] [Applause] and edwards called for the hand check of o'neill [Applause] [Music] where he is five out of seven and it has become hacker shack attack on the part of the bowl well in the penalty and james edwards would rather do that see if jack can't make something from the free-throw line he's been so effective in the post as the bulls continue to force the ball up the right side of the floor and for some reason shaq very rarely posting up on the right side it's really not that he can't do it he prefers the left side but he's pretty effective with a little jump hook on the right side as well [Music] well shaquille hit his first five he's missed his last three [Applause] bringing donald royal into the ball game he was very effective in the first half with his ability to drive the ball of the basket o'neal now six of nine from the line the magic leading by six four minutes to go in the third to keep it alive [Applause] and it's the magic 73 of all 65 and phil jackson calls for time so [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] of all the luxury performance sedans in the world there is one that has caught america's eye aurora by oldsmobile [Music] hello dave hello red back so soon i hear wendy's spicy chicken sandwich is back but try this not bad now try this wendy spicy chickens the whole breast fillet season with dave's own blend of pepper and spices for a very spicy sandwich too but it's not around all the time didn't i tell you people like it so much it's on the menu full time wendy spicy chicken sandwich now you can get it whenever you want it i'll be back and i'll be waiting [Music] performance convenience and money management expertise isn't the time you have fidelity investments working for you next weekend swedish sensation annika sorensen defends her title against a stellar field at the u.s women's open next weekend on nbc [Music] anthony bowie in his seventh nba season out of oklahoma has been one of the sparks this afternoon for the orlando magic i didn't score in 15 minutes in the first half but three huge field goals for the magic here in this third quarter using his foot speed to get a little seam in a little daylight to get by tony cucos anthony bowie is having his hands full at the other end with michael jordan who is 11 for 17 from the field and the tough part about it for anthony is that michael is nine for 10 from the line you cannot put michael jordan on the free throw line in double figure amounts except when his other teammates are not getting offensively who is starting for the injured nick anderson how hard away is defending on jordan well scottie pippen said he felt he was in the rhythm early in game three he has not been able to find the rhythm here to this point but that bucket cuts into a six-point orlando lead as we come up on three minutes to go in the third quarter now bowie being guarded by kerr [Applause] [Music] violations now penny hardaway in the post who's usually very effective in either making his own play if he's single cover but he spotted tony cucoch coming over to double team and and they gave the ball up too quickly and it enabled two coach to just hang in the lane and they get back and that's why the magic did not get a good look at a shot you almost have to wait for that double team to get a little bit closer to get the defense out of whack [Applause] [Music] thompson is trying to check in looks like the substitution has been waived off by by dick [Applause] [Music] [Applause] and the reason for that in the judgment of the officials and in particular dick pavetta that brooks thompson had not been in that little box at mid court where you have to be when the whistle is blown on the infraction he is in there now in his catcher's position i believe he called magic 73 the ball 67. michael jordan with 13 of his game-high 33 here in the third quarters jordan trying to slice his way he has called for a traveling violation a little shuffle of defeat but i think why i think pavetta called it is he felt that michael jordan puts the ball down with two hands let's see if he does as he gets inside no he put it down one hand and i don't think he's shuffled his feet that's the third turnover prevented by jordan second on a traveling violation now thompson played marine tightly by kerr o'neal thompson [Applause] now this one is a walk as he takes that extra step good defensive play by dennis robin the supply of surprise on michael jordan a lot of times officials will call the law because it looks a little bit different looks like a walking [Music] [Applause] three travels in a game that's uh that's two months worth for michael epidemic both sides as the officials very diligently walking or watching the walk it's funny they like to call the walk but yet they're letting players more and more carry the ball get their hand underneath on their dribble [Applause] 73-69 orlando and michael has 35. here's some pressure jordan poked it away but o'neil able to hold on scott [Applause] is looking for the three could not get it [Applause] shaq did not sprint back on defense maybe a little leg wary right now dennis rodman did run hard and even though it was a slow looking break hitler found robin all alone underneath 6-0 run by the ball [Applause] just under a minute to go in the third [Applause] way off and rebounded by royal hardaway hit out a region with 43 seconds to go in the third quarter foul that is knew that shaquille o'neal was left in his dust all the way into the backcourt just ran right down the middle of the floor right to the front of the rim and nobody protecting there as penny hardaway not able to help out as he was caught on the perimeter of from tony cucoch even though you know shaq is a slow getting back on defense mainly because he does so many things around the basket he's not going to be as quick as a lot of players teammates have to protect it and that's a big area where the magic are missing o'hara's grant he is so good at getting back and protecting the basket in the lane for his center at one time chicago bull horace grant sitting out with a twisted left elbow now he is said that he could make it back if there is a game five or a little team doctors are saying that he knows for the series three-point orlando lead seconds to go on the third jordan getting the big [Applause] of the yes mountain who did the job coming off the bench on saturday has tied it up [Applause] post-op vote by dennis scott and a loose ball found is called on the match with 12 and 5 10 seconds remaining in the third not on scott he pushed orlando so the with an opportunity to take the lead for the first time today not a bad play for dennis scott who is a much improved post player making his move in the lane but an outstanding defensive job by dennis rodman who actually mistied he mistimed his jump but just tipped the ball a little bit to himself as brian hill looking out to a couple of his players looking at brooke thompson giving him some hand signals and eye contact getting him straight on what they want to do in this last 12 and a half seconds i've been missing on the first free throw so he is one of three of the day michael jordan will get a rush and rodman has given chicago a one-point lead we're down to 10 seconds left in the third [Applause] three and hardaway calls for time with 2 and 4 10 seconds to go it's a 20-second timeout that's been amazing throughout the series bill jackson has been getting contributions from his bench we saw judd bushler hit a couple of threes in the first half randy brown doesn't play a lot of minutes but he forced a 22nd time out there with intense pressure on penny hardaway and then getting help on the double team reminder of tomorrow nba playoff action points jordan it all has 35 2 and 4 10 seconds remaining in the third quarter and joe wolfe will throw in [Applause] scott [Music] [Applause] it's the bulls by one jordan 12 of 18 35 points in all tonight at 11 on newschannel 8. this copyrighted telecast of the national basketball association may not be retransmitted reproduced or rebroadcast without the expressed written consent of the nba well for the orlando magic this could be their final quarter of this 95-96 season they are trailing 75-74 trailing because of the sensational play of michael jordan who has done it once again with an enormous third quarter did it in game two in fact it was jordan by himself outscoring the magic in game two 17-16 to rally the bulls in that comfort behind effort had a very quiet game here on saturday did not score at all in the third quarter orlando held to 18 points out scored 28-18 in the third as chicago was able to reel off a 10-1 spur in the last three minutes and 20 seconds pressure by the balls leading to the bucket by hawker only six turnovers for the magic in the first half they turn it over six times in that third quarter and then start off the fourth with a bad pass from brooks thompson brooks thompson has been vulnerable in handling the ball he's in there because brian shaw still bothered by the muscle spasms in his neck and hardaway had it deflected out well brian hill in effect has two point guards out there with brooks thompson but in trouble and this is when you like to get the ball into the hands of penny hardaway spread the floor and let him make [Music] [Applause] shooting decisions points and the bulls now lead 77 76 bulls have a three guard alignment with short offer and cure on the floor along with two coats and rodman shot yes michael jordan with 37 points and it's the bulls with a three-point lead and as i said earlier with the shot clock winding down the ball always seems to wind up in his hands with his teammates expecting michael to do something great he did one right there [Applause] the fake by scott and a scott struggling again after hitting on his first two shots offer dennis scott one for his last 10. after hitting on his first two michael jordan with the taller penny hardaway on really doesn't get up in the air high enough to challenge that shot double team coming as michael just feels so comfortable this afternoon on that little fade away jump shot and dennis robert was furious with himself for missing what he felt was a makeable layup there as he was fouled on that play robin two of five of the line did not want to hear any advice from tony guided him away quickly he could probably give sam to tony on his three-pointer who has been struggling mightily pulls 80. and the magic 76 again pressure by chicago and what is happening penny hardaway is getting to the middle of the floor against that pressure hoping to get a pass there so that he can get numbers and attack and hard away held by harper prevented the drive off for realizing that hardaway had a beat so for ron harper his second foul smart move on the card of parker that would have been some kind of play as penny hardaway was licking his lips with dennis rodman running at him hey thompson ultimate shot for curry passed on it here's jordan [Applause] and he'll regroup [Applause] rodman on the recovery and the foul is called as concave got to the rebound and was hit from behind by jordan time-out taken with 9 55 to go on the fourth the bulls lead by four points we'll be right back do or die for the jazz against the sonics tuesday night at nine family brings you miller moments today we look back at a memorial day classic the magic of the pacers last year game four of the conference finals and penny hardaway's three-parter gave the magic a 93-92 lead with one or three ten seconds to play but it was enough time for rick smith to hit the game-winning shot at the buzzer for a 94-93 victory in recognition of this moment the miller brewing company will donate one thousand dollars to the third remarkable scholarship fund there were several other memorial day uh memories that stand out boston over the la lakers in a massacre chicago beat detroit for a sweep to recall the pistons walking off the court not congratulating the balls and then michael jordan three years ago with a 54-point outburst against the new york knicks well jordan with 37 here today and the balls have come from behind and now lead by four orlando at one point led by 11. o'neill trying to keep it alive but pimping able to handle it penny hardaway looking confused offensively against the good defender ron harper forced to take a tough shot it looked like he didn't have any confidence to put the ball on the floor back on the floor comey cuckoo and a traveling violation so the magic will get it back the coaching staff of chicago arguing that call dennis robin injured that left elbow when he banged into dennis rodman a little bit earlier as bowie has replaced him [Applause] the collision with dennis rodman get a report on scott in a moment here's cody from downtown he was two for 33 from three-point land prior to that basket he was the three-point killer in games three and four the regular season against the magic mainly responsible for chicago winning both of those ball games and the balls now lead 83-80 toll from the orlando bench the dennis scott is okay although he is in some degree of pain might be able to return by o'neal and that may be a flagrant five [Music] [Applause] it looked like a little bit of a hyper extension there as he got his arm at the lower part of his arm caught on dennis rodman and bent back a little bit and fires grant can tell him all about that as he's suffering with street clothes well there's no flagrant on that i thought i saw the indication it's just a hard foul and caught on shaquille for his fourth lonely and the bulls now lead 85-80 7-35 remaining in the fourth quarter and the balls keep that pressure on in the back there trying to make the magic you use up a lot of time and now shaq in the second straight time posting on the right side illegal defense call for the third time against chicago so hardaway will shoot the technical hard away four of six at the line some confusion as to who was illegal referee you holland put up a two and a five and both tony cucos who wears number seven and steve kerr wears number 25 looking around asking who was haunted you also what difference does it make one of you two or both chicago with a four-point lead 7 20 to go on the fourth quarter [Music] o'neal with a bullet pass not handled by wolf [Applause] [Applause] [Music] a place he's not all that familiar with throwing the jump hook getting tip on the wrist and getting the opportunity for a three-point play as michael jordan rests and happy first teammates [Music] you haven't noticed the face of your kid on the way to mcdonald's his eyes light up he smiles to you by plymouth one clever idea after another that's plymouth by the us army be a part of the toughest smartest army in the world be all you can be and by budweiser official sponsor of the 1996 olympic summer games this bud's for you [Music] back in orlando the balls with an 87-81 lead on the magic our solid performance by dennis rodman has had a terrific series he already has two championship rings as a member of the detroit pistons we asked dennis what is the difference between playing with detroit and now with chicago in detroit and you you had the mentality just go out there and kick someone's seriously just here you know your butt is ours here it's like we can do it either way we can do it physically we can do it mentally it doesn't matter we're gonna do it if we got we got the right stuff we don't do it well dennis has said many times here's a steal for chicago [Applause] looks thompson run into by luke longley well steve kerr picks up the power what's not to say about dennis rodman has been asked many times about how great this chicago team is obviously very very great but he has also said that he felt his championship teams in detroit were better because the league was a lot stronger at that particular time chicago with a 23-8 run that goes back to the third quarter that's over the last eight and a half minutes the bulls have hit nine of their last shots that also dates back to the third quarter as uh shaquille makes his move basketball [Music] [Applause] picks up number five we have 6 34 remaining in the fourth quarter and the bulls lead 88-81 biggest lead of the game for chicago [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] are doing a much better job of spacing in the last couple of minutes did not do a good job of that in the early minutes of the fourth quarter if they keep the floor space they'll get some good scoring opportunities [Applause] just under six minutes [Applause] another big bucket by steve kerr it's a nine-point chicago lead the bulls looking to make it a four-game sweep and head to the nba final [Applause] fartaway is fouled penny hardaway after the good start has hit only one of his last seven shots foul committed by well the double teams are coming fast and furious now and shaquille o'neal when much of the three-quarters trying to play him with single coverage and a big reason why the bulls feel comfortable coming down to double teaming no real main threats as far as three-point shooters are concerned out on the floor however brooks thompson is certainly a competent three-point shooter bowie will make one from time to time but the best three-point shooter dennis scott sitting on the bench right now with a sore left elbow and yet he has been struggling mightily three for 19 in the series from beyond the arc scott after the good start only three of 12 from the field today there's pressure by the magic hardaway got a piece of it but recaptured by rodney eight point chicago lead after they trailed most of the way with 39. and you know that michael is enjoying this he's back at the scene of his his biggest playoff miscues here in orlando a year ago and you know that he is using it as a positive we're down to five minutes remaining in the four penny right away looking around not comfortable with the spacing of the magic [Applause] [Music] [Applause] was looking for thompson to make a move and take his man out of there he got his man out of there and wound up getting the ball and that's what's happened to the magic throughout this series so much standing around when the double teams come because that's the scheme so you know where your spot up shooters are but from time to time you have to read the situation and make the appropriate cuts and luke longway found out on the play 22 minutes six points five rebounds right at the start of that move by thompson steve kerr took a shot in the chin although a little overreaction on the part of steve to try and draw the attention of the official who waved it off and it was wrongly called for the foul three-point play by thompson 92-85 chicago just under five minutes remaining in the fourth the magic desperately trying to hang on looking to force the fifth game with 42 points and the only hesitation there to make sure both feet behind the line away swept aside by rodman [Applause] [Music] [Applause] pressure of the magic getting the ball to the middle of the floor where scotty pippin had a good look at the defense and where his people were and no doubt he picked out the best person open on that left side [Applause] so the chicago bulls who went 72 and 10 during the regular season best record of the history of the league looking to continue the dominance coming into today they have won 10 of 11 in the playoffs [Music] out on thompson [Music] both teams are over the limit and jordan will go to the line while the orlando magic are now facing the prospect of being swept from the playoffs for the third straight season and it has to make you wonder when this team has shown very little in mental toughness or growth the injuries can be used as a cop-out at this point and certainly they're having severe injuries particularly the ones suffered by by horus brandt but i i think the main problem there's no true leader on this ball play well you have the two young players and shaquille o'neal and penny hardaway extremely talented maybe at this stage of their career a little bit uneasy about stepping on the other coach i don't think they can do that i think penny hardaway being the ball handler and the guy out on the floor and the point guard he has to become the leader of this team and he will in time [Music] [Applause] here is steve kerr with seven points and it's the bulls 98 of the magic 87 with three and a half minutes remaining in the fourth quarter they have a foul committed by kerry [Music] [Applause] [Music] you know i don't think shaquille o'neal would be all broken up about the fact that penny hardaway would take on that leadership role also when you have a player as experienced as horace grant and plays the type of game that he does he certainly can be a leader on the team but when the fellows on the team are asked throughout the course of the year who's the leader who's the leader so we don't worry about that we just go out and play as a team and because they've been so successful in winning so many games and winning rather handily they haven't had to worry about it this being the toughest test that they've had to face and getting blown out in game one really took i think the heart out of this team not that they necessarily gave up because they came back strong in that second game but then losing the 18-point lead further took it out of him hardaway is a terrific all-around player because he has the demeanor to be a true leader i think he does i think it's just another year or two he's only 24 years old 98.89 chicago on top as we come up on three minutes remaining in the fourth quarter the government's past broken up you see dennis scott is back on the floor last touch by the balls and scott will throw in this is where penny hardaway really has to be a leader he's got to make something happen for himself or kick out for a three-point shot and let shaq clean up on the offensive boards if it's a miss very [Applause] and tentative up by jordan just an awful sequence by the magic leading to this three on one but rebounds and jordan will regroup [Applause] and that last possession may be symbolic of the problems that this orlando club has well penny has had his problems in the fourth quarters of this series some of it has been due to fatigue but on that last one he does look unsure of what he should do shaquille o'neal handling and then giving it up to hardaway [Applause] two minutes remaining in this fourth quarter and the bulls lead 98 to 91. [Applause] 45 points for michael jordan he is 16 for 22 in what has been another extraordinary performance thompson wild shot unable to go thompson has hit six of eight 15 points and the bulls now lead 100 to 93 a minute and 20 remaining of the fourth [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Applause] we'll be right back if you think stress is tough on you consider your engine traffic jams towing and hauling even idling can lead to damaging wear that's why castrol is introducing syntec blend the only synthetic blend that combines castro conventional oil and syntec molecular components for greater fully independent suspension make it a real kick in the passing lane plymouth neon coupe or sedan it's never middle of the road 92.95 for starters 12 4 nicely equipped tonight there is no melrose place but you can still watch heather sometimes i feel like different people what dark events drove one woman insane you stepped back in a motion picture inspired by a true story shattered live nbc place a minute five left in the fourth quarter it is chicago 100 and orlando 93 chicago with the three and a 20 in the timeout department three conventional and a 20 in orlando with three timeouts to go well there you see the big difference in scoring first half for shaq in the second half actually in game one with the big blowout shack hardly playing a minutes there in the 20-point win by the chicago bulls in game number three and in this particular fourth quarter for example just about every time he has touched the ball in the low post he's been quickly double teamed and forced to give the ball up and that's why throughout the course of the season the magic as their go-to guy down the stretch has been that man penny hardaway [Music] scott at the free throw line for the first time he's got an 82 percent free-throw shooter a minute five remaining in the fourth quarter scott can bring the magic within five another example of how off his shooting has been and michael jordan still smiling he was unhappy with that call he felt he was going for a loose ball off that rebound and looking out to the official so you see i told you so scott misses on both for dennis scott going back to the miserable final series he had last year along with nick anderson against the houston rockets another extremely difficult time and uh dennis today three of 12 from the field oh for two at the free throw line and it looked like dennis was going to have a good ball game coming out and making those first two field goals was aggressive defensively primarily on scottie pippen did a good job early but then has just been unable to find the range dennis robin now four of seven at the line eight points along with his 14 rebounds eight point chicago lead make it nine for the minute two to go thompson against kerr the bulls coming from behind orlando led by as many as 11. hardaway rejected by rodman 102.95 with 47 seconds to go in the fourth [Applause] [Music] [Applause] both teams are over the limit and the delay call with that scott say what i called it five seconds after i grabbed the best percentage free throw shooter on the chicago bulls the man to foul was scottie pippen who struggled from the line when they had him double-teamed as the magic just kind of lost all mental awareness after coming out with a lot of emotion in this ball game and it just gradually gradually wore down as michael jordan held the ship afloat for the chicago bulls and really kind of in the history of michael jordan he has had to score so many points by himself which is pretty much the case today pippin in double figure that the bulls have lost those ball games but he was able to play such a marvelous game today and carry it home 16 of 23 from the field 10 of 12 at the line one of five assists for jordan 104 95 chicago with 35 seconds remaining in the orlando magic season hard away [Music] [Applause] seven-point bulls lead we're down to 25 seconds and the foul is given by thompson so that will put pippin at the line trying to stop the clock kevin two of four at the line in a 67 free-throw shooter during the season out of 23 and 8 10 seconds to go in this fourth quarter well it wasn't a typical all-around scottie pippin performance he played so well in game three as he comes up way short there as he appeared to come out of his perimeter shooting slot but the pull seemed to feel when he is on with his outside shot that they are unbeatable because it just opens up so many other things for scottie pippen at the offensive end to create and you know you're always going to get a tremendous defensive effort from it pulls 105 and the magic 97 light pressure being shown by chicago thompson with 17 points off the bat now a six-point lead seconds to go and again a late whistle almost like you holland saying guys you got to foul harder so i can blow the whistle imagine just tiptoeing up to ron harper so ron hoffer to the free throw line he's two of three at the line he's a 70 shooter during the regular season oh the bulls defense has just been absolutely terrific throughout this series very intelligent the way they decided to play shaquille o'neal ineffective and so much similar coverage in effect let him score some points but keep the other people out of the game nick anderson having trouble getting involved when he was healthy and the key guy i think they felt was dennis scott with his ability to break games open from beyond the three-point line and they kept him out of this series offensively and a timeout taken by the magic nine seconds remaining in the fourth quarter the bulls lead by seven [Music] the all-new plymouth voyager has easy out roller seats that you can't get on any other minivan and an exclusive driver side sliding door in fact voyager not only surpasses every other minivan on the road but with a 3 liter 150 horsepower v6 engine it has 36 times the cargo space of a porsche 911 for about a third of the price [Music] you will be called private specialist beneath the ribbons on your chest will be the souls of those who came before you will be an individual but triumph is a team you'll know strength courage [Music] hello from fabulous plank road field where the plank road 10 has just chalked up another impressive win and our coach paul is ready to give his victory speech now this is watered down and this isn't ice house it's iced brewed so there's never any watered down tastes just more of what you want the beard so remember winning isn't everything but ice house is thanks and enjoy yesterday in utah what a game the sonics held off a furious jazz fourth quarter rally to escape with a two-point victory and a 3-1 series lead now as the scene shifts back to seattle it's stuart die for the jazz the western conference finals go prime time tuesday night at 9 eastern on nbc well the chicago bulls are on their way to making it a four-game sweep of the orlando magic as they make their way to the nba finals where they would face either seattle or utah during the regular season the bulls and the sonic split the two games 92-97-92 win by seattle in seattle and chicago winning in chicago the bulls won both games against utah michael jordan averaging 32 points a game and the two against the jab nine seconds to go hard with three and seven tenths seconds remaining in the fourth quarter steve kerr apparently chicago bulls defense with the magic down seven aware that they're going to try to set something up from behind the line making sure they had a lot of pressure out there to force any magic player with the ball inside the three-point line and penny hardaway just trying to get any kind of score he could that paid for it with the poke in the eye [Applause] it appears that penny is all right [Applause] line but once again the strong start and did not do it down the stretch again it looks like a good stat line but the fourth quarter is so important in any basketball game and in particular these playoff games and that's when you have to have your take charge guys to make sure he gets your team into what you want to do in your offensive end and the foul given on jordan to stop the clock brooks thompson picks it up so michael jordan back to the line he's a 10 of 12 at the free throw line we're now down to 2 and 7 10 seconds remaining [Music] the chicago bulls making it to the nba finals [Music] [Applause] for the regular season able to break the record of the 1972 los angeles lakers who had won 69 and lost to 13. a record-breaking 72-victory season they've been saying all along but it would not mean anything unless they win another championship well they will have that opportunity as they are headed back to the final round i think they're as surprised even as the magic are with orlando's performance i think they were anticipating a much more difficult series well george missing on both but did not know jordan finishes with 45 points the bulls do it 106 to 101 as the orlando magic have been swept from the playoffs for the third straight season shaquille o'neal had the good start however in the second half as we have discussed similar to penny hardaway did not come up big shaq finishes with 28 and his offseason has begun as has penny hardaway's hardaway finishing with 28 points let's go to ahmad rashad on the floor all right thanks mark michael a year ago when you lost this team in the playoffs a lot of motivation for you and you came down here and said that it wasn't a personal vendetta but a team vendetta but you've got to feel awful good about this series well i felt good that you know we really saw a challenge and we were faced with the challenge i can say in every every game a different guy stepped up and gave us support and i think that's what this team is all about it's not a one individual type of team and you know today it was my turn some of the guys couldn't get it going offensively you know i stepped it up a little bit and you know everybody rallied around there you guys have been so exceptional in the fourth quarter offensively and defensively how do you explain that well i think that's the time of the in the playoffs that's the most crucial time you know you you want to execute you want to play solid defense you want to do all the necessary things to win the games you know last year you know i wasn't in a rhythm to do that for this team or we really didn't have a good understanding for each other before i can do that so this year i had a better understanding about the team and i think we did they did had a better understanding about myself and you know we just we were able to function down the stretch all right we will see you in the finals congratulations all right let's go over to jim gray all right thank you very much ahmad i'm here with dennis rodman dennis another big ball game today offensive minded how come you became so offensive minded in this entire series well i don't know you know i'm looking for a shot even though i'm missing that means i'm aggressive i'm a force downer no matter what but uh like they say no matter how big he is he can fall just as easy how much did the team need your enthusiasm it seemed as though they were days lackadaisical in the beginning of three or four of these games and you lifted the team significantly today how much did they need your enthusiasm well the coach always says go out there and give us a spark give us something you know i said it back in my mind i got to do something i have the gym that's my job like well i think the team will lift and you know when you've got guys a group of guys like this planet running ass is all hey you got to give them credit are you surprised dennis now that this season as you head to the finals how well you've been accepted by the bulls well i think that they realize that they see a hard working man when they see one and hopefully i get to stay here a couple more years if not it's been fun it's been great and uh let's go do it all right congratulations to you thanks a lot alexis back over to you all right jim and when we return we'll be talking with scottie pippen of the chicago bulls the bulls are headed to the nba finals they have swept the orlando [Applause] [Music] uh [Music] [Applause] [Music] to whom it may concern i've always loved the summer games the running the jumping it's all good even the shot put thing is pretty cool too still somehow i can't help feeling there's something missing me and that's why i think football should be an official event of the summer games let's have a meet and put this together that's my dream and this is my planning reminder should seattle beat the utah jazz tomorrow and win that series in five the series would then begin the nba final series would start on friday in chicago the bulls over the magic 106 to 101 obviously if utah wins the series continues and then we shall see but congratulations uh scottie pippen thank you as you guys have continued right through i know you have been saying the 72 win season wouldn't mean a thing unless you go all the way and now you're going to have your chance in the nba finals well definitely i mean uh even though we swept this team in this series this is a very tough series for us trying to contain penny shaquille down low or their three-point shooters are they made this a very difficult series for us but i think as a ball club we stayed focused we knew what we wanted to do and who we wanted to shut down was there a particular philosophy going into today's game michael jordan seemed to want it offensively at the start and obviously had uh one of his remarkable performances well it wasn't really you know we didn't know what type of enthusiasm this team was going to come out with and i think their fans here really gave him a big lift and they came out they played hard throughout 48 minutes but uh michael had that hand today and he was unstoppable and really kind of carried our team are you surprised by the ease in which you were able to handle the orlando magic i know they had injuries but the injuries came after the damage was done well i feel like we got a good feel for this team you know after getting dennis on this ball club getting michael back in his rhythm uh you know we had realized we had a very strong ball team and uh from that point it was just a matter of us falling into our rhythm and you know really getting the feel for this ball club here now shaquille o'neal and penny hardaway today had the strong first half but not able to do it in the second half was there a particular adjustment that you guys were able to pull off well that's been the thing the whole series those guys have to carry this team offensively and if they can carry them 48 minutes then it's a different ball game but we know our defense is going to wear them down somewhere within that 48 minutes all right scotty congratulations and thanks for joining us thanks mom all right scottie pippen of the chicago bulls as the bulls make it to the nba finals once again the final score the chicago bulls over the orlando magic 106 to 101 the nba playoffs on nbc will continue tomorrow night in prime time with game five of the western conference finals between the utah jazz and the seattle supersonics sonics of course leave that series three games to one that's tomorrow night nine o'clock eastern time right here on nbc tonight on nbc a special one-hour fresh prince followed by the powerful world premiere movie shattered minds though heather locklear for matt couches about rashad and jim gray marv albert saying so long this has been the nba on nbc [Music] the nba playoffs the u.s women's open the magic came out like youngsters today penny hardaway on the dunk orlando led by nine at the half but the bulls had too much experience and too many weapons rodman a great feed to scottie pippen and he jams it down the bulls pulling away in the fourth quarter in this one ron harper the steal and the lay-in the bulls led by three and michael also avenging his poor series last year by tossing in a mere 45 points to give the bulls the win they have taken 11 of 12 playoff games so far after a 72 victory regular season well dan roan covered the clincher today at the o arena and ventured into a happy but still business-like bulls locker room the magic had both the crowd and desperation on their side and short-handed as they were they dunked and rainbowed their way to an 11-point lead in the first half shaq and penny too hot to handle but then so was michael he's not the slasher he used to be but jordan can get a shot any time he wants one 15 points in the bull's third quarter blitz that got the game back in control after scoring 17 on saturday the bulls knew he was due you know his statement uh from saturday really you know said a lot you know judging back from today's performance from him that you know all over them won and uh you know he really came out and played a remarkable game for us i just read what everyone else was going to do and you know if they would get themselves involved early you know if they were in their realm early and next you know i found i was in my rhythm a little bit but i didn't force the issue i just let the game come to me there were heroes all over ron harper's steel to start the final quarter he had 12 points in game four and dennis rodman with 14 more rebounds he helped hold shaq to two points in the fourth quarter and the bulls are in the final right now we're gonna go i'm ready to go tomorrow next day next day after that i don't want to sit around sit around wait i want to do it i'm ready to go the post game celebration was short and only slightly mushy the bulls know they're not finished yet i feel really good just to be back here we're not done yet as i know but it's good to get back this far it's jordan's focus as much as anything that's welded this team into a victory machine and it's that same focus that makes the bulls the favorites when the finals begin in orlando dan roan wgn news okay on to baseball now the white sox almost made a late and great comeback in toronto tonight but their rally was cut short and so was their eight games eastern conference champions but i'm wondering in this city who would buy a t-shirt like that because for the bulls i mean for the toronto raptors that would be a big deal yeah wait a couple weeks for a real deal but you know for the toronto raptors that would be a big deal but here it's it's like michael jordan winning player of the week award you know that plaque is probably not on his wall at home i'm sure maybe for the charistas maybe maybe all right tourists picking up the eastern conference shirts well we have an important member of the bulls who will be here in a few minutes a long time member of the bulls too whoa it just got dark outside i guess that means we better start reading this script bulls fans have waited two long years but finally the bulls are back in the nba finals michael and company finish a clean sweep of the orlando magic yesterday and mj carried them 20 points in the first half 45 for the game he hit from all over the place and the bulls went at 106 to 101. the eastern conference champs arrived home late last night a few of the faithful were on hand to greet the team at o'hare it was a long weekend in orlando and the bulls were happy to be home but there's still plenty of work ahead i'm very excited i'm extremely excited but i'm been around long enough to know it's not over yet and we haven't reached or attained our goal that we started to achieve at the beginning of the year so we do have a lot of work left it's special but not that special because i think our goal is to be nba champions again here five of the guys have been to the finals before but i've never been there and we're really excited this whole team realizes that we still have our main goal left out there that's win the whole thing now only one team stands in the way between the bulls and the nba title we're still not 100 percent sure who the opponent is going to be western conference finals are still going on of course between the seattle supersonics and the utah jazz the sonics are ahead three games to one in that series and hope to finish it off tonight at home now if that happens the finals would start friday here in chicago but if the jazz win tonight the two teams would head back to utah for game six and if that happens the finals wouldn't start until sunday or perhaps even later and as dave eckert found out bulls fans are not worried sweep in the finals uh i don't think they'll have a problem with seattle which i that's how i think they're gonna play you think they're gonna go all the way now oh yeah sweep sweep why uh well give them five seattle's tough it'll be a close game it'll be close sweet complete sweet why do you say that because micah's good michael's great yeah he is and i love the buzz okay gold bulbs okay i love the bulls you brought your broom with you today we got one sweep yeah i thought maybe they're changing my job description but no this is for the sweep and maybe another one because the western conference teams are just much weaker than the eastern conference teams i think even the knicks are better than the western conference actually we should probably require because our new correspondent in seattle might be listening uh chris cavello at radio station kjr 950 am good morning hey good morning how you guys doing down there pretty good how are you hey we're getting ready to uh take out the utah jazz tonight how are you play play that tune on the jazz and get ready for the bulls which is going to be tough series all around so what's the game plan out there and how are the sonics going to contain the bulls well they were going to play that a tough style of defense and you know we're trying to try to run on the utah jazz uh in utah utah played that real slow paced uh taste that the sox really don't like to do and when we come home we like to run a lot so hopefully we're gonna run up and down the court and tire the utah out and carl malone mailman what do you think some of the key matchups would be between the sonics and the bulls oh this is what makes it great there's a lot of great key matchups uh first you've got gary payton he got michael jordan and uh as you know gary payton is the defensive player of the year so i think he's going to give michael jordan a lot of uh a lot of tough matchups right there unlike anthony hardaway that really didn't get to do that as you saw in the sweep with the orlando magic and also you got to like sean kemp against dennis rodman uh two tough power forwards going up against each other both like to rebound and both like to play tough down in the low pose what do those seattle fans think of the bulls anyway hey what can you say about the bulls i mean 72 wins you guys just cruise through the playoffs it's going to be a tough series they got a lot of respect for the bulls up here well chris you have a lot to live up to we need a photograph of you we've got correspondents all over the country one in new york and one in orlando and we're going to miss these guys but we're glad to make a new acquaintance send us a photo can you do that oh definitely will yeah actually anything you guys need up here uh like i said we can't wait to play the bulls and uh hopefully it's going to be a nice dragon out seven game series all right well chris thanks for joining us and i'm sure we'll see you soon if you can take care of utah all right hey we'll try to do that and good luck to you guys all right thanks thank you well the bull sweep means another sweep of championship t-shirts so stores like tropical tees are cranking out the latest in bulls where we'll be there next hour but here now a sample of what's hot off the presses and it can only get better for merchants by the way in a couple of weeks expect another round of shirts celebrating the nba championship turning to some news now police recover a stolen car with radioactive material in the trunk that car was found and a special happy birthday today hit it [Music] very good good job there is a reason for this that's right when the opening bell sounds at the new york stock exchange this morning it might sound uh a little old maybe a little a little rusty how old is the dow jumpsuit 100th year 100 years so happy birthday and we don't know where we don't know where it is today do we have the numbers well charles down began tracking a dozen smoke stack industries like chicago gas and u.s rubber on may 26 1896. and by the way the market will open with friday's numbers up a fraction of a point 57 62.82 a little baggy aren't you you know they're kind of large they're a little bit large that's all right if they fall off this will be a new first for live television where did those come from jim they're larry's oh i thought you swept them off the weather center floor or something i was drafted by the bulls many years ago go figure yeah somebody yeah there's a bull player running around like jonathan's michael jordan's got his all right hold on to those will you don't don't lose those no i won't all right i'll try not to spill coffee on them either please thank you i gotta play over and over again the bulls are on their way to the nba finals after getting rid of the orlando magic in four straight games i like this because you get to read really fast i think that's half of what the sportscast is huh the bulls were struggling against orlando until you know who erupted in the second half michael jordan was sensational hitting just about every shot on 16 of 23 from the floor he seemed to carry the bulls but did get some help from the others and dennis rodman was a real madman out there he was a madman on the boards again his outlet pass found scotty for a big time dunk and ron harper who will be making his first trip to the finals put the defensive pressure on the magic as well am i behind her head kevin who knows i don't think so you must be behind it was a 10-1 run that helped the bulls knock orlando out of this one and mj ended up with 45 points on the day and that effort more than enough to give him the rest of the bulls the title of eastern conference champs after last year we saw the challenge in front of us and we stepped in front of it and we we faced it and we conquered so i think that's you know that's a great accomplishment i sincerely hope that chicago wins the title and i mean that with uh you know with all sincerity if we can't win it i want them to win it and i think that quite honestly i don't think michael is going to be denied we look forward to meeting the opponents in the western conference um i think we're excited as a basketball club to be back in the finals again and we're looking forward to our matchup over there well as phil put it the bulls now awaiting the winner of the seattle utah series the sonics do hold three games to one lead they could wrap it up tonight if seattle wins game one of the nba finals would take place friday night at the united center turning to baseball now and they say all good things must come to an end and that was the case for the white sox that is true did you know the last team to be swept from the playoffs three straight years the chicago stags they took the goose egg in 48 49 and 50 lost to good teams though all three of them went on to win the nba title games having played 11 playoff games so far with only that one loss to the knicks the law of averages tells us that the bulls are due for another loss sometime pretty soon of course the law of averages does not take into account michael jordan's sensation of unfinished business after last year's loss to the magic and his desire to prove a point trying to prove that point with a sweep game four monday orlando shaq and penny trying to stop the sweep and this is how you do that shaq sized 22s all over luke longley and then penny with the drive right through half the nba's all defensive team he had first team 15 in the first half but a guy named jordan also knows a thing or two about scoring john koncak once had a dream about stopping mike but that's about as close as he got and then shaq and rodman they've been drawing the whole series this is more than jawing it's a donny brook it's well short of a melee magic up nine third quarter off the magic turnover clear it's jordan and then shaq answers with a clear of his own magic lead by eight but jordan remaining hot dare i say and no i guess i dare not the fall away and he gets the foul had 15 in the third as the bulls make their way back now chicago down just three jordan to steve kerr shooting the three as hot as anybody that ties the game at 74. fourth quarter bulls stepping it up with the deep brooks thompson good to have you in the game picked off by ron harper he lays it in bulls up three and then more jordan look at the isolation all alone turns around forget it and then with under nine minutes to go bulls up to tony cucoch had been just two of 31 from deep in the playoffs why not shoot it anyway bulls lead by five then jordan with some finishing touches looks at the line yes he's behind it yes he hits it bulls by 10. horace grant can only look on as his former mates down his current mates shaq had 28 but only nine in the second half and yes it is the bulls 106 101 and the sweep is complete jordan 45 points is that number familiar he used to wear it 16 of 23 from the floor rodman another 14 boards the magic now have been swept out of the playoffs three years in a row and the bulls make the finals for the fourth time in six years it was extra incentive that we saw focus we saw a challenge you know after last year we we saw the challenge in front of us and we stepped in front of it and we we faced it and we conquered so i think that's you know that's a great accomplishment jordan jordan that's why he's the best player in the world you know he just you know came out he played well he let the game come to heaven you know he shot the ball well this is a great team this is a great team great individuals great mental set and all things like that so you know we've got young guns over there and young guns if they can't reload fast enough they're not going to win there were some things that were out of our control with the injury situation and we played and lost to a great basketball team perhaps in a few weeks they'll be called the greatest team that ever played the game who knows and with some of the greatest lids that ever played the game nice job dennis we all know the old saying one man does not a team make apparently two men do not a team make either shaq and penny accounting for 62 percent of orlando's offense against the bulls they accounted for just 37 percent of the team's offense during the regular season we will have much more on game four a little bit later in sportscenter including what is next for the magic and what the bulls have to do to win and take it all the way in the finals like the bulls the red wings say their regular record setting regular season the game has been billed to be better than the super bowl last couple of years the bulls magic series was supposed to be as good if not better than whatever the nba finals turned out to be now in light of the bulls four game sweep let's really hope that that's not true with more now on what put chicago back into the finals here's stuart scott michael jordan is nothing if he isn't consistent prior to this year he had gone over 40 points one out of every four playoff games with two 40-plus games under his belt in this postseason mj was due longley wanted to go again didn't get it it'll be jordan's first shot and he makes it they want michael to go to work again turnaround on bowie got it jordan off the glass puts it in score it for jordan he's still perfect did i say consistent in the first two quarters jordan hit his first seven shots he ended the half seven of nine shooting with 20 points in the second half nine of 14 from the floor 25 more points we're fortunate tonight to be able to ride or this afternoon wheel ride the coattails of michael jordan and he had a great game jordan jordan that's why he's the best player in the world mentally he's probably the toughest guy in the world basically to uh to guard and and try to defend judging from looking michael's eyes i'm sure we could have rolled them all away today they stripped the ball from him when we were here last season that we had a chance to win you know i think this is uh some revenge for him the irony of jordan wearing the number 45 jersey last year when he made that crucial turnover against orlando and scoring 45 monday to knock the magic out was not lost in the newly crowned mvp i just wanted to come back and win and sometimes things very ironic you know the way things happen and it's no explanation for it really while jordan scored his former jersey number the bulls made a key but not so surprising adjustment to keep shaquille o'neal from scoring his after 19 points in the first half o'neil saw a double team nearly every time he touched the ball in the third and fourth quarter they didn't have the same luck or we didn't have the same luck collectively as a team scoring out of all those touches as we did in the first half of play espn nba analyst dr jack ramsey joins me now dr jack coach hill said shaq got as many touches matter of fact he hit every shot he took in the second half he just didn't shoot the ball that much no he only took four shots in the entire second half stewart only one in the fourth period but more than that he got the ball out of position in my opinion he got a lot of them on the right block he likes it on the left block where the side is cleared and he can operate one on one and then if he's double team he'll find the open receivers it didn't happen enough for shaq that way the bulls have 12 steals in game one 12 steals in game two 12 steals in game four they've got three guys in the first team all defensive team what makes their defense so stifling the defense is the primary factor for this team steward and they understand that they use defense to pressure teams out of their offensive game to get turnovers and get them in a transition game of their own when they're behind they go to hard pressure and it's paid off for them in this series it pays off in a big way the bulls going to their fourth finals in the 90s for dr jack ramsey in orlando i'm stuart scott espn all right gentlemen thanks very much so that leaves us with the magic who outside of arranging tee times now have to figure out where they go from here will shaq return will brian hill return and what changes will be made to fix what went wrong over the last dreadful week for the third year in a row you know this is how we've ended our season and you know it's real sickening because uh we're a better team than what we displayed even though we know we had uh injuries and everything but just one of those things where it's always hard to take that and uh and live with it sometimes you wonder if you know if you've done all the right things to to get to this point you know you know we think we have and now it's a matter of getting over that last hurdle i'm very proud of each and every guy that that walked out on the floor today i think if you know if our people here in florida had any questions and around the country for that matter of the heart and the will of our players i think hopefully they were answered today at the very least the magic have been consistent over their brief history they've been to the playoffs three times and all three times they have been swept out in 94 the pacers did it in the first round last year the rockets did it in the finals and this year it was the bulls
