[Applause] oh goodness [Applause] welcome to cbs sports continuing coverage of the 1993 ncaa tournament coming your way tonight doubleheader action from the midwest regional beginning with top seeded indiana taking on the number four seed louisville st louis missouri is the site the gateway to the west sitting hard on the banks of the mississippi river and one of these four teams hopes to make the trip just about 700 miles down to mississippi to new orleans the last stop on the road to the final four tradition of bounds with these four schools having won a combined total of 10 ncaa championships and good evening everyone i'm james brown as you take a look at the brackets here some awfully competitive match-ups should prove to be a nice evening and after tonight only two teams will remain here in the midwest regional for the chance to move on to the final four i bring in my partner billy raftery and billy it's good to see you again partner billy this first matchup between louisville and indiana pitched two of the more experienced minds in college basketball and bob knight and of course denny crum but the experience of bob by really seeming to pay dividends many people thought they would not be alive this long especially without alan henderson well we'll see alan henderson tonight bobby knight says he's ready to play but the reason they're able to perform at such a high level is calvert chaney the bump and go you'll see side screens down screens re-screens summer screens to keep the defense away and the ability to get free without the basketball is a facility that this youngster is able to perform night in and night out all the action the little weak side exchange and able to complete he's extraordinary without the basketball you've got me smiling already louisville always plays good basketball come march but you know one of the reasons they're playing so well having won eight straight is the fact that denny crum finally has someone who can shoot the three well they push the basketball up and they'll cross-court it and dream morton able to nail that open jumper all right so the stage is set and we are about to kick off here when we come back we'll introduce you to the starting lineups for tonight's contest cbs sports exclusive coverage of the mca basketball championship regional semifinal game is sponsored by geo inviting you to get to know the newest geo geo prism only at your chevrolet geo dealers odual's no alcohol 70 calories and real beer taste oh duels what beer drinkers drink when they're not drinking beer and buy a t and t the right choice [Music] back in the arena in st louis you know most people are familiar with the accomplishments of bob knight most who may not know that denny crum has a winning record against knight he's foreign too against knights hoosiers tonight he's expecting a big effort out of clifford rozier against the limited availability of alan henderson now the hoosier coaches say it's not how many minutes that henderson plays it's how effective he is and they want him to hit those defensive boards jb all right leslie thank you very much and as we mentioned two experienced minds indeed old war horses for sure the starting lineups tonight bill raptor as you take a look anything that can be exploited in this lineup well clifford rozier has to play strong take it at matt novar [Applause] chaney controls the tip for indiana and this is greg graham louisville man [Applause] you'll switch on exchanges small guy the small guy [Applause] inside to nova and nova goes up and scores indiana on the board first multi-dimensional shady with a great bounce pass these two teams have met 13 times previous indiana leads the series 8-5 this is their first meeting though in ncaa tournament and there's the three nailed by greg miner it surprised a lot of people that don't see them but it gets them right in their organized press this time 2-2-1 they'll show a lot of different looks damon bailey with the ball bailey off the front of the rim rebounded by keith mcgreeve the best ball handler for the cardinals nice post pass he's got to go strong rebound is strong by brian evans who gets to start tonight indiana has a lot of pace in their game jb more than most people would expect bobby's known for the defensive ability but they push it up and they're at their best when they're in the open floor bailey brian evans calvert chaney greg graham and matt and over the five on the floor for indiana for greg graham and boy has this young man stepped his game up i guess that's pretty much indicative of the entire indiana squad as we take a look at the officials for tonight's contest john clackerty frank scagliatta and gerald boudreau and billy again indiana players really have stepped up because of the injury to alan henderson each one of them has been asked to do a little more in the scoring category particularly greg gray a prospect now for the nba guy that they didn't talk about early in the year a little pushed up morton on bailly lagree and rebounded by smith off the foot of morton this is graham nice fake counts the basket and a blocking foul is called on greg miner wow open floor basketball louisville can't afford to turn it over they've got to value the basketball they've got to get in the hands of lagree or bad things will happen for them right here they step in as graham anticipates going to the sideline able to complete in the middle of the floor but he's one of the guys that has the loose gun in the open floor for bobby knight an excellent indication of the nba type of moves you were talking about greg graham the big ten defensive player of the year and looks like you in your harvard days a few pounds ago like 60. nice pass emphatic by troy smith but a nice dish troy shoots about 55 and you can just see the reason why on that finish an 8-5 ball game hoosiers on top just underway here at the st louis arena of building speed in history when you talk about the ncaa tournament and we'll talk more about that chaney slips but collects himself and scores such a composed ball player they use the pump fake more and better than most clubs in the country that's an example faked himself out on that one the ucla look the shuffle cut try and dump it inside when possible duck ins by the post people off the front of the iron but smith good aggressive hustle billy when we talk about some of the strengths of this louisville team so many of their guys can post up [Applause] so rick pitino is one game away from getting to the final four something that was denied of last year by christian leitner with a second to they went the length of the court the big shot at the buzzer in overtime and that broke the hearts of the wildcat fans and rick but he's back here again 29-3 and one game away from going to new orleans he was born to be a coach yeah that was the title of his book born the coach and that's the true title thanks gets the final game and when they add up the numbers and rick pitino shakes the hand of dave odom final score kentucky with a big win over wake forest [Applause] so for al mcguire and jim gray this is dick stockton saying so long from charlotte the final score kentucky 103 and wake forest 69. and this game has been a presentation of cbs sports and right now let's send you to our new york studios and pat o'brien pat hi dick al thank you very much good job tonight kentucky advances in the tournament beating wake forest 103 to 69 putting on the clinic really 16 for 24 three-point shots and kentucky advances elsewhere in the southeast regional semifinal florida state beat western kentucky 78 in an overtime game and so as we look at that bracket it'll be kentucky and florida state the tip time saturday six o'clock in the afternoon we of course will be here for that in the midwest regional semifinal kansas in the third straight game in the tournament kansas had five players in double figures a 93-76 over jason kidd and cal indiana beat louisville 82-69 caliber chaney with a big night 32 points and so we look at the midwest bracket now indiana meets kansas again this is a 338 tip a 6 p.m tip on saturday rather indiana and kansas kansas beat him earlier in the season bobby knight would like revenge there and florida state and kentucky by the way is a 338 tip had those mixed up and that's on saturday we'll be here all day for that tomorrow our coverage begins at 7 30. some of you will see virginia and cincinnati than george washington michigan our second tier of games arkansas north carolina temple and vanderbilt those of you still watching we'd like to thank you for sticking with us this late for all of us here at cbs sports good night everybody like a [Music] [Applause] [Music] hello once again everyone welcome to espn's ncaa tournament special i'm john saunders along with dick vitale and seton hall coach pj carlismo thanks for joining us here first off the top let's uh get right to things pj you had a tough time in the second round of the tournament and you got to stop going against this guy i'll tell you our deal was whatever way dick went i was going to pick the opposite team he takes kentucky i'm stuck with wake tomorrow i get to play it was no contest out of the gate kentucky shooting the three was absolutely sensational but what about the job by the general robert montgomery knight they never take a bad shot they moved the ball and i said it once and i said it twice and i said it three times player of the year caliber chaney not hard away not match spurn chaney was unbelievable 12 shots 32 points that's 2.6 for every shot all right you'll have a chance to save five six seven and eight times a little later in the show but right now we're going to start off in the southeast where the first battle of the day was between florida state and the team that knocked off p.j scott western kentucky the game being played at charlotte north carolina number three seed against number seven c parkville drives charlie ward knocks it away sam cassell finds douglas edwards he jams it down the knolls were up six early and then more florida state defense well there goes mr bell takes it down the lane but domar says get it out of here little guy and then there's the reverse jam by the spectacular sora darnell and me he was taped up but he's back in knocking down at three 11-2 run pat kennedy a little concerned here sam cassell drives the defense collapses bad shot the second shot we're going to overtime tied at 69. porn then the spin move kisses it off the glass and the foul western kentucky down by two mark bell fouled out of the game with a minute to go 15 points eight rebounds four assists his replacement michael fralick overthrows darius hall or diddy will look at that again later and then almost losing the ball over to cephas button puts up the three the bounce up high but it just will not fall down so western kentucky does fall as florida state has the victory 81-78 is the final in overtime douglas edwards with 19 points nine rebounds rodney dobart 16 points and 13 rebounds there first trip to the elite eight for florida state since nineteen first against kentucky winner of this one would go on to face florida state kentucky the number one seed in wake forest getting to the sweet sixteen it looked dominant rodney rogers included and it would be the battle of mashburn and rogers rogers struggled early the pass goes off for ronnie owens leg out of bounds then roger skips one off there hicks one of 12 weight turnovers then he drives gets called for the charge four points in the first half jamal mashburn on the other hand he says well i'll take you outside and knock down a three then travis ford with a three mashburn again with another three dale brown with a three mashburn again you get the idea they were hitting them everywhere well then he blows the alley-oop right here and then he comes up with a loose ball and it's an error ball but the ball pounces out he said why not we'll go for three baby trifecta time and look at a monster mash inside incredible kicks it back out inside out mr ford says thank you mashburn then knocking down another three ford for three the end of the half four beyond nba range 12 of 15 on three pointers including eight in a row and they blow them away 103 to 69 was the final in this one mashburn 23 points and four rebounds they had that in the first half five of five from beyond the arc right there kentucky wins their 29th lead indiana against the number four seed of louisville gaming played in st louis missouri a couple of powerhouses of college basketball who know what it means to get to the final four and it was tough chaney with the hard foul and morton then in each other's face a couple of technicals called on this play seniors at work greg graham great ball fake plays this one in he had 16 in the first half ben graham finding calvert chaining over top of clifford rozier 14 in the first half 1.9 to go they find damon bailey who knocks down a three iu up seven at halftime denny crum says go to clifford rozier take over on the inside and he does against matt and over baseline knocks it down then rozier again against novir nova rather brings it down low then off the glass louisville down by three and then calvert chaney takes over i'll tell you what watch damon bailey right now he looks for mr chaney mr chaney with a sweet giant a little turnaround counted and then pat graham inside finds cheney under the basket for another deuce he beats miner again then look at shane he beat miner up the dribble baby count it i love him he's super all right next exit is new orleans maybe they have to win one more game but 82-69 they knock off louisville calvert-cheney with 32 points and eight rebounds for bob knight his eighth time in the elite eight and in this one calvert chaney points per game in the tournament 28 rebounds eight see the shooting percentage at 65 percent and 77 percent from the strike but alan henderson did get key minutes in this game and he says he is progressive you know i'm pretty pleased with how my knees come along getting more confident every time i'm on the court made some big strides last week in practice as far as the overall confidence i have in my knees these guys are seniors they've played together now for a long time and that's one of the reasons they're the best team in the country they're talented they're well coached and they're they're seniors they play well together our team is very talented you know people don't understand i mean we may be small but we got we're very tough minded we got heart and we're very talented as a team and when you put all that together i think it makes for a very good ball club i think at the n.i.t calvert-cheney was rubbing your head for good luck after they had won that thing apparently it's worked i'll tell you one thing you know what really impresses me there 12 shots he takes and he produces 32 points you don't have to be a math genius to figure that's better than two point almost six with each shot i mean that's great production it's their execution i love indiana the only thing i had a question mark with indiana was the lack of having mr henderson yet they've still been effective and he gave them 11 quality minutes didn't score any points had three rebounds but he changed a couple of shots in there they were just playing brilliant basketball right now i really think their execution is superb who picked louisville before well i just thought that's right i thought louisville i really did i felt in this game that louisville's athletes would give them so much of a problem because of not having henderson but their execution has just been brilliant they're ball moving and the one thing they do well and you know better than most you coached against bobby knight he always seems to have his team take the good shot and the right people take the shot i wear you down i thought louisville played extremely well in the first half it was a big segment late right at the end of the first half damon bailey hits a big shot to go into the locker room and the indiana defense as well as they execute on offense they limit louisville 33 in the second half they take the game over they strangle them with their defense and the senior leadership is key hey maybe deja vu new orleans jimmy beijing i mean that's shot by mr smart designed by mr knight he's got the best shooter in america steve walford and a guy takes an acrobatic baseline j and they win the game and everybody screams he's a genius and look them day high you need a little luck in this game yeah free throws though as we talked about earlier that's what really killed syracuse in that game all right let's stay in the midwest now california cinderella with a slipper fit well against number two kansas they had to knock off another higher seed they'd already gotten the number three seed in duke but it wouldn't be as easy for todd bozeman and jason kidd tonight kid comes up with a steal gets control and he's loose for the high percentage slamming it down here kansas returning to favor calvin rayford comes up with this steal from kidd finding rex walters and he just lays this one in kansas up with an eight-point lead deck 12 10 seconds left and a half look at the double team but you're not going to double team him baby there's the diagonal pass mr hendrick with the deuce and it's 40 40. tied at 45 seconds left in the half walters drives double pups gets the hoop and the foul 13 in the first half kansas takes the lead lamonde murray then with a steal from eric paulie murray to kidd who misses but murray is there to follow and laid off the glass cal up by one monty buckley with the miss from outside kid gets a rebound and sticks this one back falling away again with the acrobatic shot cal is up by two but then they go ice cold kid with a nice pass to murray who misses this layup won't fall down kyle's outscored an 11 to nothing run by kansas rex walters with a three at 24. poster tag to adonis jordan he knocks down a three kid fouled out with a minute 30 to go jason kidd is consoled by todd bozeman a great run but he finishes with just 13 points kansas wins it 93-76 run in the second half tenth elite eight appearance for kansas rex walters with 24 points and donna jordan with 15. and after the game the run came to an end for todd bozeman he was very just emotional to guard against doing this but uh damn uh no one none of you guys can imagine what we've been through uh telling you it was tough but uh these guys are strong they showed a lot of character they go through what they went through every game after the game it was a struggle everyone asked questions about everything but the game these guys never got credit the whole season long even after we beat duke the two-time national champs first question was uh todd did you uh have anything to do with lou campanelli being fired i mean we just beat duke the the best team in this decade and that was the first question up you know not that man you guys had a great job you know your team showed a lot of character you know that was the question but like i told them you know you learn from every experience and this experience that we went through this year is gonna make us all tougher people you know you can certainly understand what he's talking about there lou campanelli nobody liked the way he was fired and as a result this team and todd bozeman has had that cloud over them and they've been playing great basketball john i've talked to a lot of people and i think that he's been unfairly uh labeled as a guy that played a big role in the firing of luke campanelli he happened to be an assistant coach in a very tough situation then i mean the athletic director made that move he's done an amazing job i think we've sung his praises he deserves to have his praises sung i think there's no doubt they're going to continue to be really good and i'll tell you this i look at my preseason top five next year if they return all these players i go one right now north carolina i go two with michigan three kentucky four arkansas and five california mr bozeman enjoy it you did a super job 29 years of age what a future he has he can't worry about all those other problems he's got to go on now to the future and the future is bright they got some great recruits coming in they've done a nice job the last two years and getting into the acc and making themselves known right away i keep going back to the first game in the acc they beat dean smith which will say hey don't just look at florida state at being a football school we're also a basketball store they have turned this school into a factor in both major sports edwards second three-point basket of the game and florida state calls a 93-76 pat kennedy is not ready to pack it in [Applause] today leaving a legacy for tomorrow a tradition unlike any other the masters on cbs dick stockton and al mcguire here at charlotte coliseum lorenzo hans has replaced sam cassell in the florida state lineup martinez going deep for qriket knocked out of bounds sounds like a football commentary and it's still kentucky's ball mr hands got his hand in there hands a 6-3 senior from west palm beach final games of the career for doug edwards rodney dobar casell three seniors who started today ford and delta with cricket martinez and jamal mashberg [Applause] 215 on the clock kentucky will win its 10th straight game what a momentum booster going into the final four great feeling dick right after you know you've got the tickets to go to the final and it is 22 points for prickett the coach will give his team off tomorrow about to retool on monday there's a three-point attempt at short by edwards kentucky is shooting 54 from the field and a 26 edge rebound martinez florida state by 26 and their bench has outscored florida state 32-7 what incredible numbers rolled up by kentucky today carol well the way kentucky plays i think they take [Applause] [Applause] that was all strength two people caught their hands down the ball low with mash he just broke through it that was body power the bodies of the 90s there's the charles barkley malone the mailman be able to control and score after you hit and doug edwards has fouled out having scored 15 points and seven rebounds and he just got hit with a tactical foul not the way you want to end your career but he has to be frustrated with his florida state group watch masha he powers the ball with his big hand see how protected it is looks like he's going through the line like a fullback changes to right side the outside [Applause] so mashburn misses the free throw and now the technical free throws mash burn with 12 points nine rebounds and seven assists and they're going to take them out of the game [Music] going to the professional ranks but not before a date in new orleans and travis ford will shoot the two technicals 179 wildcats travis ford is an outstanding freshman at missouri and transferred to kentucky last two years hasn't played ball really did and he admitted that he was a pain in the you-know-what to rick patino because he had been playing since the age of two al and he says here i am a transfer i sit out then i'm injured with the bad kneecap and finally patino said yeah you were a little bit of a pain but you're okay now but you got to remember to think they're all young kids who are all 17 and a half years your age or 18 when you get them they all think they're stars but there's only one person that runs the show there's only one reel on the bus at the university of kentucky and the driver is coach pitino and he will become just the tenth coach in ncaa division one history to take two different schools to the final four the last to do it was lou henson who took new mexico state in 1970 in illinois 18 years or 19 years later to the final four the last time he went to the final four with problems he had that tragic incident of his baby died but you know sometimes the man upstairs will never erase that tragedy but you have happier times in life don't you i know that i liked on on wednesday morning when you and i dropped by to watch their workout his children were there at the workout todd sloboda who's the fan favorite comes into the game he's gotten the biggest cheers and going out of the game is prickett he is going to be according to pitino and the kentucky folks a great basketball player 22 points and 11 rebounds for jared frickin a freshman maybe he'll be the next jerry west i don't want to say who he could be according to rick pitino last time i said that you went off the deep end but i'll have to say it again rick pitino said if he really develops an outside shot he could be another larry bird leave me alone with larry bird will you dick larry bird there's no other larry birds i've been saying that for years and years i remember with billy packer when larry bird was a junior at terre haute indiana saying billy baby that guy's the best you'll have to take it up with rick pitino that's the coach's opinion i can't argue with him on basketball because basketball is his life he wants his team to be happy and i said to him the other day i said coach rick happiness with you is winning basketball games travis ford 19 points and five assists this is a blue and white celebration here in charlotte shepherd in the game for florida state and wells with the lay-in with 45 plus seconds remaining 102-81 [Applause] so for florida state now they have shepard carroll haynes robinson and wells kentucky is also empty their bench brasso is in the ball game along with amino timberlake bratty who's hit a couple of threes and delta travis ford will get a chance to play in a final four big season after the lackluster year with the injury problems [Applause] hear his hands there is spabona delft with a follow and the final seconds of the game off the rim four games thick and four no contest and the final seconds here's the voter with the shot todd swabota hits a three and so for al mcguire and jim gray this is dick stockton see so long from charlotte the final score kentucky 106 florida state 81 in kentucky moves into the final four where they will join the other three regional winners next saturday in new orleans and we'll be back with pat o'brien from our studio in new york when we return [Music] look at those faces and you say to yourself this is what it is supposed to be about kentucky is the first team to advance to the final four blowing away florida state had a great season by the way 106 to 81 is the final there and coming up next here on cbs pat o'brien along with mike francesa out in the st louis arena kansas and indiana they played once earlier in the season and kansas one was on december 5th let's show you how that game went and mike francesca the story here was free throws no question of powder pat indiana just four or 13 you should see damon braley missed one here and knight was not happy about what went on the foul line matt nova missing another one like i said just four or 13. that was the difference in the game lex walters who's having a great tournament was hot that night he goes into the lane there hits the jumper gives kansas to win 74-69 and so the rematch is today and tip time is about seven minutes away and we're gonna go over to the coach's corner and uh digger phelps and mike shazewski gentlemen your take on this one how do you stop rex walters i think you have to stop him from getting the ball and that's bailey and greg graham once he gets a double team not so much double team but make sure you stay in front of them and the guards didn't play well last game against kansas i think indiana's guards will play a lot better back to you pat all right thank you digger we'll be back with more as our coverage of the 1993 ncaa tournament rolls on from new york city after this stay with us they are savoring the moment down in charlotte as kentucky becomes the very first team this year to advance to the final four and rick pitino is indeed a happy man savoring the moment there our next stop on the road to the final four is saint louis good game indiana kansas a one of the two seed folks basketball continues here on cbs after a word from your very own local station there are cars does it count [Applause] welcome to cbs sports continuing coverage of the 1993 ncaa tournament today we bring you the midwest regional final from st louis missouri a city that one team will in very short order find is the gateway to the final four about to do battle for that right of passage will be the top two seeds in the midwest number one indiana and number two kansas and hello everyone i'm james brown along with the governor bill raftery and bill this is a much anticipated rematch everyone knows about the five-point kansas victory earlier but both coaches say hey that was then today different they've improved the running game the defense so they're mentally tougher of course when you've got calvert chaney who uses the curls and the bumps and gets free and scores sometimes that will hearing that advantage but kansas on the other hand a terrific backcourt adonis jordan the ability to penetrate and find people they can shoot the threes but this is the problem for indiana how do they play the low post guy will they attack will they double up will they be able to stay at home on walters and play off a hancock those are the areas of concern as scott brings his guy in the low post identified and now if you can shoot the threes the guy is drawn to you but a beautiful little kiss by rex something that will be a dilemma for bobby knight well the team's not the only ones fired up as we take a look at a lineup and bill these two teams really mirror each other in a number of ways you see anything to take advantage of great names there but the center spot i think nova has to play sound basketball can't get into foul problems i'm paulie and others who play that center spot and the officials for today's contest richard paparo out of syracuse new york bobby donato out of media pennsylvania andre patillo the umpire out of decatur georgia donnie gray is a standby official out of fort washington maryland [Applause] and as we talk about this rematch keep in mind that in coach bob knight's 22 years indiana has never lost to a non-conference team twice in the same season cheney and scott the center jump controlled by kansas this is hancock indiana man [Applause] traditional i might add a lot of motion jb there's the pivot play we were talking about bill paulie misses gets his own rebound loses the handle out of bounds it'll be iu's ball if they're able to get it in easily it's going to be a problem for the interior defense they don't have the depth with henderson limited evans with the bad hand all of the problems if novar gets foul problems the route that roy williams jayhawks have taken to get to the elite eight williams in his fifth year at kansas if it takes bumps to get ahead indiana has a lot of them scream and re-screen keep your guy in motion don't waste dribbles unless they're constructive greg graham damon bailey pat graham matt lover and change the five this is graham pad graham offensive charge dick paparo calls it it'll go ku's way pat graham known for his outside shooting trying to get into the thick and both clubs pay attention to business step in and attract the charge ball reversal sets up for shooting also with the dribble drive walters operating on greg with the slap and steal ahead to pat grain [Applause] delivery indiana has great composure [Applause] too easy you said it yeah that's a tough matchup and talking to bobby knight's assistants that's the one they were concerned about misuse of the dribble ku has to get stuff off their defense they use the secondary break to set up open shooting opportunities but it's the d chaney two very hot six shooters in this game chaney averaging 28 in the tournament rex walters 25 an increase of 6 for cheney and 10 for walters and a foul this is a concern shady trying to front gets called and right here greg graham with misuse of the bounce and is this going strong enough with the finish rickshaw woodbury in for darren hancock nice pass into polar goes up strong scores and a foul there is a size differential and the biggest concern for indiana was the inside play now they're trying to help off on the low post off of hancock we'll see if that continues but the size of paulie and ostertag who will see during the course of the game you just can't front them and they do pass decently already paulie has scored more than he did in the first matchup he's got three he had two in the first one stolen bailey with the turnover woodbury loses the handle over to the hoosiers billy i mentioned these two squads really mirror each other both offensively and defensively well the motion offense the defense a little bit different in the sense that kansas will go out and stretch the floor more but this year they become more of a half court defensively not doing as many traps and mixing up for the d's as north carolina does [Music] inside to noble very underrated center who gets the drop he had 18 points and 10 rebounds in match number one [Applause] seven all ball game here in the opening minutes walters that's the killer jv first adonis jordan puts pressure on you with the bounce and it then rex walters completes it and billy the big guns really do step up when the going gets tough indiana's gonna have to use clock more take the tempo out of the game on this end to another chance for bobby knight to meet the press in yesterday's exchange of pleasantries with the fourth estate knight wouldn't make outright predictions but he did make one thing crystal clear if i could determine what the hell he's going to look like next year that's just what i have no idea i gotta wait next year to watch him play i mean i can't do that no you would anticipate wait a minute wait a minute [Applause] i see i see bailey the image is fading just a second just a second coming back coming back yes yes images are tough to deal with sometimes you got to get them in line yes i see i see bailey being better do you see him being the playmaker for next year's team i mean this is a damn cheap piece of crystal here this isn't this isn't expensive enough to answer all those questions this thing wait a minute there's something forming here warming it says what a question i'm throwing that right to the coach's corner what do you guys think of that michael there's only one guy and he he's changed his strategy he used to get up and walk out today he's got this humor well now i know how he comes up with all the answers i i played for him and worked for him i didn't know he used that crystal now i know how he does it all right pat back to you let's look in our crystal ball here what do you see mike i see uh the second half we'll rejoin jb right after courtside in st louis we continue here on cbs right after this i'm not sure that worked did it let's enjoy the game cbs sports presents prudential securities at the hash sponsored by prudential securities the most important thing we earn is your trust that'll be three on evans and it should be a one and one for kansas 17 foul on indiana very similar to the first game indiana usually in control in the amount of free throws they take and convert and right now kansas in good position tonight on cbs begins with dr quinn medicine woman and it's in the heat of the night followed by raven that's all coming tonight on cbs this is a much straight up defense that kansas employs they don't do a lot of they do a one three one they do a lot of things that green snoop and poison carolina but they become a better team by going straight up challenging people with their good pressure defense not stretching the floor quite as much and still getting the turnovers out of it [Applause] well-conditioned squads both hancock big eight all newcomer team jackson [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] leading indiana 74-66 the last time indiana was in the midwest regional they went on to win the national championship that in 1987. will it happen they're trailing right now with 2 45 left in the ball game [Applause] no one in foul trouble for kansas graham and bailey greg graham and bill with four for indiana this is chaney off the mark [Applause] noble nails it great three for brian evans what patience huh with the pump fake indiana with the timeout for the three early jb five-point kansas lead 2-19 to play bobby knight opting for the three early and then the quick timeout no sense saving them right get back in the game quickly this is the end that's the concern it's usually been well grooving penetration here and cheney with that little touch small change but [Applause] has been the bailout for k.u and then the kick out [Applause] north carolina cincinnati coming your way tomorrow kentucky already heading to new orleans michigan and temple yet to be decided the second trip to new orleans coming from here and a long way to go before it's decided that man has never lost twice in the same season to the same non-conference team kansas beat them back on december 5th [Applause] scott back in for the jayhawks replacing richie damon bailey greg graham calvert chaney brian evans and matin over the five for indiana in white two minutes left in the ball game and in the first game the occasion they went one three one late in the game and iu missed some shots they stay man-to-man evans greg graham counted cheney gets the timeout down to a five-point ball game [Music] 76-71 kansas 145 left in the game [Music] [Applause] the vital numbers bill the indiana with the one they can still play with that but i think the important thing is how they get to score they've got to score quickly when they come and they're not used to being full-court pressurized defense years ago bobby would run a 1-3-1 half pro trap at army i know he doesn't consider that as part of his arsenal but you may look for some double-ups if the ideal trap occurs here in the backcourt and another big number kansas still has three fouls to give before the penalty richie calls timeout good job defensively switch to cutter and bill i think are real credit to the versatility of roy williams team in the first match-up he was the back court of ku to do the job outscoring indiana's backcourt 32-9 today it's the front court of kansas as you mentioned at the top was so important well what roy has done is it set up his game got them going early where there were touches down in the box area whether they finished or not was unimportant other people would find a passing lane to kick out shoot the open jumper because that's got them in command [Applause] [Music] [Applause] foreign [Music] packed house here at the st louis arena an arena that has seen some outstanding ncaa basketball over the years kansas on top of indiana by five with 145 left in the ball game at stake a trip to new orleans and all four number one seeds are still alive it has never happened where they've all gone there kentucky is already in tomorrow will decide who comes from the east and the west and bobby knight's gonna have a problem if they get it over half court the last game these two played in december the spread the fourth corner was so effective particularly with a guy like adonis short able to turn the corner they make free throws they also pass and catch very well they got to get a steal in the back court [Applause] richie handling the ball for kansas a handful evans did not stop his bigness forced that errant toss and what you will see from this point forward billy two of the best clock managers and tacticians in the game in knight and williams this isn't bob knight's game here's the run and jump in a sense as they force with evans and assistance that tough pass [Applause] bailey back in with greg graham calvert chaney brian evans and matt and over there going for the pick and roll and a flare graham greg graham has 23. he was in the backcourt and outran walters chaney has it deflected by jordan a five-point ball game with 111 left pass selection as well as hustle important it's got to be catchable when you're full tilt and is that an attractive kiss for k.u [Applause] and they don't need it and walters knows it and here's your spread you got to go get them and walters is fouled he'll take a trip to the free-throw line walters has scored only nine points but he's got eight assists [Applause] and he is deadly at the free throw line on the season walters is 88 percent accurate as leary comes in for indiana replacing matinova and in the tournament rex walters is even more dangerous 15 of 16 at the line gets the first hancock and for kansas bailly with a great pass see the slap it doesn't go in jb but here in the rear paulie continues to perform at a high level the toughness now for indiana scoring quickly generally a patient team uses the bumps to position yourself so you've noticed the pick and roll we have to get some quick hitters bailey [Applause] [Music] 40 seconds to play leary with the foul hancock will take a trip to the line [Music] um while they had a meeting after the k-state game jv kansas university upset in the big a tournament about the way they performed roy called the meeting and looked what has transpired since on a run in a mission and against the guy a lot of his peers say he'll coach his team and beat yours and then take your team and beat you so roy williams not that he hasn't been here for the country he may have arrived what a solid job thus far [Applause] 82-73 kansas on top as you take a look at the vital numbers they scored ties kansas biggest lead of the game and a foul whistle out high well they've got them to play with so roy smiley wondered why he wants to get it over but it's only their fourth personal foul so kansas still with a few to give two more exactly four team fouls [Music] and there's another one woodbury again roy having to play dean smith last time in the final four prep assignment for both of them great affection feeling dean some ways he's got it better but he sat there patiently well one thing roy williams team has done better today than last time more difficult to believe they were 15 of 20 at the free throw line in the first matchup today there's 16 of 18 89 at the line look at that for the half that'll shake him [Applause] and by the expression there it has and you think of indiana playing with the problems of henderson down the stretch how they reach back this is what it's all about the joy on one bench and the other end and supporters down threatened walters with the rare miss nine straight free throws for kansas [Applause] in and out for leary the foul out high i think on hancock and coming next dr quinn medicine woman except on the west coast will build the matchup has been as much as most of us expected i've enjoyed it i mean both heavyweights teed it up and no pun intended as they take us out of boston calvin who pushed it up that's a guy that roy mentioned him making shots and getting on top of his game has been a great help and the hoosiers gallium effort undermanned evans with the thumb henderson with the knee pat graham back with a tough foot problems during his career not easy the club has a way [Applause] to be very tough at this time of year leary the top end by evans and a timeout with 8.3 seconds remaining and that is the last timeout call by indiana a lot of excitement here i'm sure the guys back in new york feel the same pat game enjoying your coverage i want to remind everybody what's going to happen tomorrow here on cbs one o'clock the road to the final four then the east regional final the tips at 138 cincinnati north carolina the west regional final four o'clock set your clocks temple and michigan let's send it over to the coaches corner now and see what you guys what's your take on this game two great steals by kansas led to two crucial turnovers for indiana mike yeah andy what they did digger is they scored off the turnover here we have the action and we're going to see the turnover here's quick hands and watch how they convert and this is this is great basketball kick it out rex walters the three and then right away again uh and they're gonna put a good pressure on indiana again and watch the pressure on the ball really good pressure and he goes for the steal again and comes up with the bucket and this is what uh broke the game open for a little bit and gave him uh that little bit of confidence that kansas needed okay from there now you take what rex wallers really is as a player now he comes down the floor in a crucial situation when indiana's making a run in the last two minutes makes a great bounce pass underneath well it comes at a time right after a turnover where indiana has fought back and look at walters right here what a gutsy pass and that puts him up again by two possessions and wins the ball game for him intensity momentum goes back to kansas and they come away with a win all right fellas gentlemen thank you uh mike thanks for joining us today by the way tonight on cbs dr quinn medicine woman followed by in the heat of the night and that's followed by raven that's tonight right here on cbs for now let's go back eight seconds in the game to the godfather of basketball and mr man demands jb all right pat better man i'm sure pat's playing a little that in his day i had the pleasure beating bob allen fog allen's son who's a physician and talked a little about with him about the history of k.u and it continues rex to transfer from northwestern wanting to play in a program that had a chance to get to the final four well ricks the bright youngster he is he chose the right one didn't he [Music] [Applause] [Music] and he's all smiles admire their back door to donuts forcing the timeout now the good pressure by indiana no relaxing that's the last time out for kansas 3-3 77 kansas both teams out of timeouts 8.3 seconds remaining and figurative even if they make the three they don't have to take the basketball out reynolds the worst shooter on the team nice play heads up kansas all the way to the end and that'll do it [Music] now [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] kansas becomes the second team to advance to the final four in new orleans joining kentucky which was a winner earlier today over florida state the chevy mvps of the game are richard scott of kansas and calvin chaney of indiana coming up tonight on cbs it'll be dr quinn medicine woman except on the west coast [Applause] so for bill raftery and leslie visser i'm james brown saying so long from the st louis arena this has been a presentation of cbs sports home of the ncaa basketball championship [Music] three two rows on the leader does it count is it goodness from a sold-out meadowlands arena in east rutherford new jersey the east regional final top seeded north carolina takes on second seeded cincinnati the tar heels got here with a six-point win over arkansas cincinnati outlasted virginia good afternoon everybody i'm brent lundqvist along with clark kellogg north carolina with the top seed and decided height advantage symbolized by seven footer eric montrose not only is he seven feet and 275 but he possesses a nice soft shooting touch as well the quickness of cincinnati i would think is symbolized contrastingly by nick van exel well he's the guy that makes them go is streaky but nonetheless makes big plays when they need them most these two teams are meeting for the first time since 1980. the winner goes to new orleans and gets kansas back with the lineups right after this cbs sports exclusive coverage of the ncaa basketball championship regional final game is sponsored by honda celebrating its 10th anniversary of automobile production in the united states a t the right choice and by diet mountain dew you've never done nothing to you do diet do [Music] 19 000 plus on hand the meadowlands right now let's beat the starting lineups here is the public address announcer bill bromberg good afternoon ladies and gentlemen and welcome to the meadowlands for today's regional championship game between the cincinnati bearcats and the north carolina tar heels let's meet the starting lineups at forward for cincinnati a 6-6 senior from covina california number four eric and martin forward north carolina a 6-6 junior from the bronx new york number 31 brian reese and forward for cincinnati a 6-6 senior from long beach california number 33 terry nelson at forward 4 north carolina a 6-8 senior from roanoke virginia number 34 george lynch at center for cincinnati a 610 senior from ron rovia california number 44 corey blunt at center for north carolina a seven foot junior from indianapolis indiana number double [Applause] north carolina a 6-4 junior from east elmer's new york number 14 derek phelps cincinnati a 6-1 senior from kenosha wisconsin number 31 nick van exel and i'm going for north carolina a 6-3 supper from gardner north carolina number 21 donald williams [Applause] and introducing the head coaches for cincinnati bob huggins and for north carolina dean smith dean smith now in his 32nd season bob huggins in his fourth season at the age of 39. we've been joined by a third member of our broadcasting trio here's andrea joyce well vern this cincinnati team really feels it is the rodney dangerfield of college basketball in their view they get no respect but that us against the world attitude has served them well they're not intimidated by anyone ask eric martin about playing a school like north carolina with a rich tradition of great players and he points out hey michael jordan isn't out on that court today vern all right andrea north carolina has won eight regional finals they're going after their ninth at second in ncaa history cincinnati has been to the final four or five times most recently a year ago six times actually they made five straight trips between 59 and 63. jody sylvester ted valentine and art macdonald are the trio officials well you just saw eric montross corey blunt one of the key matchups to watch cincinnati has to score early and often so they can get into that harassing pressure they must rebound the ball well especially on their defensive board north carolina on the other hand keep on keeping on handle the pressure get it inside where cincinnati down with your depth and your size north carolina did handle arkansas but it was a tussle and arkansas presented the same kind of tempo that north carolina will face in cincinnati today here's van exel and he dishes it too hard turnover derrick phelps lynch three on one and donald williams has now scored 11 consecutive north carolina points he had the last nine in cinching that six-point victory over arkansas friday night gibson nice pass back to nelson but he's not a scorer blunt is but not that time montrose [Applause] double on friday 19 points 11 boards really important in their half-court game for cincinnati to get drunk and eric martin some good touches early van exel has his first shot rim out he had a tough shooting night friday night after hitting his first two there's the pass from phelps reese with a shot too strong in transition cincinnati off the foot of eric martin brian reece will help he won't throw probably should have gibson dishes to martin for two eric martin has been fabulous of late in four of his last three of his last five he's had double double 19 points a game in the tournament williams and the baskets aren't falling early for north carolina we are tied at two here's van exel for three [Applause] he is as you pointed out the other night a very streaky shooter but he makes big plays when they need him and if he gets it going watch out because he can give it to you in bunches [Applause] that will be north carolina's ball van exel in the tournament has not shot well there you see 10 for 41 from the field but nonetheless he made two big threes in the game turning run on friday and he's capable of those kinds of performances he's a little streaky because he takes questionable shots on occasion so it's hard to shoot a good percentage when you're manufacturing difficult shots that'll be goaltending called on corey blunt take a look at montross he's just south of a seventh of a ton but nonetheless you'll see the cincinnati bearcats go right at him and try to double and triple team him inside gibson for the bearcats and cincinnati is after a 7-4 lead here's the pressure they like to do it to you along the sideline at the other end here's van exel don't do that the tip is good terry nelson gets it i don't know if north carolina has seen as strong and offensive rebounding team as these bearcats are they attacked the glass with vengeance cincinnati they'll slow it down when i talked about how we knew cincinnati would come out on their toes not on their heels this is a team that truly believes they can win and should win today [Applause] the pace of the game certainly what cincinnati would have aspired [Applause] that ball stripped north carolina gets it first substitution of the game now for cincinnati eric martin comes from again terry nelson so it's van exel martin nelson bostick is also in the line of curtis boston number 43. [Applause] this is where north carolina has to look to be patient cincinnati's showing the zone on the baseline out of bounds [Music] [Applause] mcgrudel is in number five they look inside for montrose field of downhill legends at the american ski classic next sunday on cbs sports ryan reece of carolina missed a dunk shot at the buzzer that would have given the tar heels the lead and the victory but don williams has come back with two three-pointers in overtime and caroline is up by 674-68 nick van exel brilliant first 15 minutes of the ball game problem six yeah he shot seven of 14 in the first half including six threes only one of eight this half he's gotten a couple of good looks but carolina donald williams and derek phelps have done a nice job limiting his good shot attempts brian reece has to call timeout that is the final tar heel timeout 74-68 tar heels are out of time now cincinnati has one remaining the possession hero favors north carolina and they have a six-point edge with 121 remaining phelps gets the inbound pass from george lentz [Applause] now donald williams goes by terrence gibson no need to foul williams is looking for a foul and he was shuffled he certainly did donald williams was anticipating the foul and cincinnati surprised him by not fouling they basically just hubbled around him which was good defense they give up 13 seconds take a look here and watch donald williams he's hovering over the ball wanting to actually get fouled and there he shuffled him at the very end so now you need a quick hitting shot it doesn't have to be a three unless it's a good one if you're cincinnati well you can't go this casually though there's gibson they're looking for the three there's [Applause] [Music] that's five on eric martin he leaves with 16 points and he's not yet aware that he has fouled out now he will be i think he knows he's just not anxious to leave that's a a very empty feeling george lynch will go to the free throw line the coordinating producer of ncaa basketball on cbs is bob ficus today's game produced by mark wolfe and directed by sandy grosso coordinating producers of the road to the final four eric mann and david winter directed by bob martinez the senior producer of cbs sports is ed gore well what a tournament that eric martin had not only in the first and second round games but here at the meadowlands as well double-digit scoring in all four games [Applause] rebound carolina what a play by derek phelps smart play heads-up play here by phelps on his way out of bounds catches nelson right on the knee it's tough to catch the orange with your legs [Music] 50.7 seconds remaining montrose can't save it and traveling called it will be cincinnati's ball they've still got life they sure do north carolina has really struggled to get the ball inbound here the last three possessions nelson van exel durden who is a pure shooter is in the lineup along with gibson and blount gibson tries to get the screen back to bunt he'll get him in the corner for nelson no lynch with a rebound 35 seconds to go oh not the guy you want is shooting the three casual pass again van exel takes it all the way that may be the last gasp there's nick van impe senior wondering where is that invisible lid bearcats couldn't quite find the hole here in this overtime but another outstanding season for the bearcats to be hard to deal with immediately afterwards but when they have a chance to pull back and look at what they've been able to accomplish they'll take pride and satisfaction in this season phelps gets one three points for phelps cincinnati has missed its last seven shots salvadori phelps carolina has won last basket doesn't count but it's [Applause] irrelevant [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] donald williams gets two three-pointers in ot for six of his total of 20 in the ball game and north carolina goes up against kansas saturday afternoon in new orleans it'll be a number one seed against the number two seed our most valuable players of the game for chevrolet don williams of north carolina and nick van exel of cincinnati for clark kellogg and andrea joyce i'm vern lundqvist saying so long from the meadowlands our final score 75-68 pat o'brien and company will be along when we come back [Music] north carolina fans hearts are still fluttering north carolina advances to the final four they'll play kansas let's go back out to the meadowlands andrea joyce is with i presume a happy dean smith andrea you bet they are thanks pat coach congratulations what was your message to the team going into overtime well i hope we can continue to play the way we did in those last four minutes and we really had a chance to win regulation but we concentrated i thought we got good shots of course donald made the threes but it's an exciting victory because cincinnati is so hard to play against they're very strong defensively the rematch of the 1991 final four against kansas how tough is it for you to face your former assistant roy williams we'll hear that all next week but i'm so happy for roy and his team and i'm happy for this team and our coaching staff and we'll tell you that plan all right we'll see you in new orleans all right back to you pat thank you andrea good job and coach congratulations we'll see him in new orleans and another coach who knows what celebrating has been about the last couple of days is rick pitino last 24 hours anyway and rick joins us live coach your team you've got no injuries really and your team is running on all cylinders you got to feel great about this team this year we do we're honored to be going to new orleans certainly it's a dream of all players and coaches alike and certainly we're looking forward to playing next saturday rick considering the kentucky program that you inherited how what was going through your head is your team cut down the nets you looked like a very satisfied coach yesterday afternoon well you just love to see the players have a great time like that we went through a season that seemed like it was only two weeks long we got 30 victories we only had three losses so we never had any peaks and valleys we've been riding on a high but we've played our best basketball at the end of the season and that's what you'd like to see coach uh thanks i know you're uh busy thanks for joining us we'll see you next week in new orleans okay thank you thank you coach let's go quickly over to our coach's corner and john and digger uh point eight to go you had a very interesting comment about carolina well digger they say that coaches should not use profanity i think they would have had some of us for a child back to you fat honesty is the best policy isn't it coach thank you we got great basketball we think coming up here temple in michigan in just about eight minutes here on cbs uh vern lindquist always gets those great games though doesn't he enjoy the second game here on cbs after a word from your very own local station [Music] temple or michigan which team will take the final opening at new orleans and the final four north carolina kansas and kentucky are set here it's the one seat michigan against the seven seed temple never before have three number one seeds made it all the way to the final four billy backer michigan to become the third today what about this game it could happen it's a power team jim and i think some of the keys that we're going to see in this basketball game today in our game analysis temple temple tempo and what we're talking about there temple likes to keep the game under 70. michigan would like it over 85. the second thing is that michigan high low even they're going against the zone defense today look for weber and howard in high low to cause problems for temple the next thing is sophomore pressure how about the comments made by jalen rose and chris weber about the fact that this might not be any fun anymore and then of course the empty bench at temple with the exception of jason ivey it's kind of thin down there for john chaney coach john chaney the lineups jones and batea freshman cunningham brunson mckee for the owls and the five stops from the wolverines weber jackson howard rose and king and the officials larry rose with gene monge and john moreau michigan 29 and 4 on the year only having been beaten by duke iowa in indiana twice temple 20 and 12 at one time 10 and 10 on the season michigan's road to the regional final through coastal carolina down 19 against ucla they prevailed in overtime and then in a struggle they knocked out george washington one of the ugliest victories in michigan history said chris weber for temple they defeated the big eight tournament champions missouri santa clara and vanderbilt on friday night [Applause] cunningham and weber jim one of the things fans are gonna notice early is that temple zone will not look anything like it was against vanderbilt where it really extended out they'll be down in the box with four guys trying to keep their feet in the [Applause] that paint perimeter jump shots will be available king on the perimeter skips it over to rose and almost turned over jackson underneath rejected by jones and temple coming up big defensively on the first possession of the game jones has showed us incredible quickness on both ends of the floor there's a nice matchup rose kind of surprised me a little bit that rose would be on mckee eddie jones with a line drive three-point basket the match-ups man-to-man jim most teams have a hard time with jones and mckee because you don't have people that size to go out and guard that such active people but michigan is blessed with king rose and jackson that can play men on the wing jones steals it from jimmy king brunson over to mckee rebound to weber they start the break howard in the middle players on the wings he finds king king let it go early got two down for michigan on the floor so we got a five on three breaks bryson takes it all the way king never got off the ground did we see that zone now watch him pack back in keeping guys in the painted area howard in the lane for michigan's first two these teams met last year in the ncaa first round and temple down early by 14 came back to take the lead with five minutes to go before michigan won by seven caleb knows got that lead started with a three and of course that propelled michigan that was their first game for belgium on the way to the final four that was a year ago in atlanta temple may be a little tired of getting to regional finals jim and not getting a chance to advance lost to duke and one and north carolina in another recent year howard blocks it but in the air it's [Applause] [Music] [Applause] well michigan knows all about that situation jim the shot clock expiring because they have been lucky enough to beat that shot clock and they're two huge wins once against north carolina and of course against ucla which is the win that got him here five to two temples if anybody could get this team going in the right direction it's jalen rose has been relatively quiet in the ncaa tournament so far you mentioned temple billy in the regional finals 88 and 91 at the meadowlands and now for the third time in six years a game away john chaney's first trip to the final four see the straight man-to-man mckee three-point basket very pure on that one it's interesting to see how long steve fisher stays with that match-up before he will move either jackson or jimmy king over on mckee nobody in the united states runs the high low any better when they get the ball in the hands of howard and then down and low to whip a great finisher inside temple trying to get to the final four for coach john chaney for the first time but the school went for the final four with both 56 and 58. correct mvp in 56 and of course they lost but he was the mvp came in third and then the great guy rogers who had teamed with lear earlier was involved in taking the final four again jones nice shot blocked by king and almost safe when it comes to fatigue he uses the glass to extend the lead back to 10-6. that young man made four or four free throws as we remember the other day in the last 39 seconds really sealed it against danny jackson fall away jimmy king up high king flips it and hits the roll almost basket interference but score the basket king and jax it was so important with offensive rebounds on miss foul shots again that made the difference in the gw game jimmy king's basket 10-8 temple you can see how temple's isolating taking their two big men putting cunningham on the foul line to t down low and they're isolating one-on-one situation and jones that pass going mckee thought he had a teammate behind him early the owls have buried a couple of threes and they lead by i think fisher likes coming to seattle well i mean he enjoyed himself the last time he marched through the national championship of that overtime win here's the block he was telling us when he came here for the 84 final four he couldn't find his credential i had to get a security guard to let him in and he said in the absolute last row upper deck ellen those things happened back in 84. michigan has scored the game's last seven points of course that's the last time that kentucky was through a final four right and they came in here and georgetown really put a defensive hurt on them that time kentucky came into that final four much like the way they're playing in this tournament i'm making you back up on that one i don't know if any conductors that's true [Applause] two on the shot clock and they call the foul weber takes away a possible break by michigan possible two men all by themselves michigan what chris webber thinks that's his fourth foul is that the hand is part of the ball you see whoever come he's come up with some great defensive plays in this half here he comes down [Music] all ball violent but all ball but today only one of five from the line [Applause] you were talking about seattle it actually has been part of four final fours we had of course the one that we know about with michigan winning they had georgetown winning in 84. back in 52 kansas won here dean smith on that team yep and kentucky won in 1949 beat oklahoma state so you think about it this year's final four could have a real tie to history with seattle with michigan gets to michigan having one at 89. dean smith on the kansas team at 82. in kentucky he has in my mind and thinking back over time as strong a pair of hands as i've seen in the low post in college basketball when he gets it down there you better be playing stolen by rose he read it all the way king following his background as he runs down the floor that was a beautiful pass they're having fun now that was michigan of a year ago they're having fun now here's steal by weber mckee somehow comes out with it 2 20 to go owls trailed by eight oh that was not a smart play by jalen brunson has got has already released the three he'll shoot three yeah he'll put him on the line for three stops the clock there was the steal by jalen great eye contact with king and puts it up there perfectly for jimmy king to finish it away look at the eye contact there's the lob jimmy king the great finish the kentucky connection here with jimmy king of course ray jackson but jalen wasn't thinking on that defensive play john chaney and temple have called the timeout they have one remaining two minutes 19 seconds to go they're thinking about new orleans trying to get there headed to the line for three free throws have only one timeout left trailing by eight as michigan has gone to an 11-1 run billy going off on a 11-1 run that's been the difference tim what you've got to go to strategy here now is temple you're gonna have to pick up full court maybe even have to go out and chase a little man on man-to-man situation and you got to think about follow now remember michigan has a team just a 64 free-throw shooting team but that's the strategy john chaney has to employ and look at how important these three fouls could be you know jamin rose in a situation the shot did not go in michigan would have had the ball had themselves up by eight now they find themselves just up six hey that was the only gabe brunson two free throws are they saying that it was after the shot and what he had to say was after the shot because he no question he was a good two feet outside of the arc now the rule on that is if a man shoots a jump shot the jump shot ends when the man's hit the floor not when the shot is released out of his hand but without question he was a long way from the basket way beyond the three-point heart everything the rest of the way is two you heard that from one of the officials both teams over the ten foul limits so two coming for rose jim that certainly helps the poor free throw shooting team as opposed to the one and one i mean you know you're gonna get that second shot you get yourself in some kind of a rhythm takes the pressure off but still the strategy that john chaney has to employ the rest of the way here stripped away by jones down seven two minutes to go billy yeah they don't have to go for threes right away pull up jumper gets it to five and here comes the press [Applause] [Music] [Music] and jim you know we mentioned uh kentucky you said before uh you know maybe that club back in 84 playing as good as this one this team is averaging 10 points oh oh technical foul called against the temple bench [Applause] billy that's a killer right there oh boy you talked about a killer two shots and the ball and the free throws they still have to clean up john chaney cannot believe it remember his great stare down up in hartford you'll see mourinho stare down here that's going to be ray jackson two shots well with two free throws two more coming and possession this could be game set matching point billy [Applause] [Applause] kentucky in this tournament they're averaging 10 points more than normal and they're shooting 37 from 3-point jackson made only one of two now two coming for rose john chaney has not [Applause] he's got his one foot out of the coaching box too i think he want to slide back i'm sure that's not good so michigan leads by eight and has possession temple hanging back michigan's not going to take that ball to the basket they're gonna have to come out and pick up everybody there they go rose will go right back to the charity line and they wasted did temple 10 seconds doing [Music] john chaney one of his favorite slogans be the dream for a while today looks like his dream of a trip to the final four might come true it's not over yet 136 remaining wolverines by nine one more free throw to come jim he has turned temple now into a national program and he said he did that by going out and scheduling anybody that would play him playing on the road to get that exposure necessary for people to know who you are and of course kids around the country do know that now and he said as a coach however it's tough to do that unless you know that you have the security [Applause] michigan does not want to foul here oh they do though brunson will go to the line and that's the one thing you don't want to do if you're michigan let them have the wide open jumper now called on jimmy king [Applause] we're hearing now that the official word on that technical foul was called against john chaney and it was for using profanity there's a new technical foul rule this year with that in mind we'll talk about that a little bit more when we come back michigan has called the timeout this time leading by nine team 89 michigan and seton hall the final shot for seton hall in overtime in the wolverines under steve fisher then an interim coach win the national championship that was the 1500th game played in the history of this ncaa tournament jim you talked about that unsportsmanlike technical against the coach and as you know that has been a point of emphasis this year in regard to trying to clean up any kind of language whatsoever it was not a great demonstration in any kind by john chaney just something that he said eight-point lead 120 to go and if you're gonna foul and i guess john chaney's decided not to and i don't know why you gotta foul early see there's another case they wasted a good 10-12 seconds look out now a little bit of talking going on between the 221s jones and jackson third one jones 21 eddie jim talking about cleaning up some things do you think there'll be any uh move down in new orleans to clean up kansas's act of spitting in the mississippi river no they're gonna do the sanitation department's out looking for roy williams club which they started they say back in 1982 with the north carolina team that won a national championship dean smith took down there and roy was an assistant how about kansas and carolina a rematch from the national semifinals a couple of years ago smith and roy williams get another crack at one another and i'm sure that uh coach smith would like to coach this entire game as opposed to that one where he made an exit 73-64 and michigan doing a good job right now coming out not falling but putting a lot of pressure on the ball making it tough jones three-pointer slices it to six and temple has used its last timeout 73 67 a minute to go [Music] let's look at the conference affiliation for the teams headed to new orleans acc big eight sec and the big ten a minute away here's the quick foul jim you know something interesting this year the acc was 98 and 20 including ncaa tournament play against outside competition they were number one big 10 was number two 99 and 27. the big eight was number three with 95 and 28 and the sec has really climbed up in recent weeks although they were fifth during the year they were a hundred and against forty two losses so obviously shows the quality of those power leagues two shots for jimmy king first attempts of the day or people at michigan will forever remember that putback with a winning shot against ucla i know these folks will jimmy king senior rising but he made the big save at the end of regulation and they came too mckee missing tipped him by batik now remember with no timeouts left this game is shortened by a number of seconds temple can't stop the clock howard wisely calling a timeout needed some help michigan left with one timeout foreign [Music] so [Applause] [Music] [Applause] foreign angie fisher james foster's mom and dad you'd never know which i mean does mr bosco look like his son that's another son that's in the nuclear engineering at the university of michigan as well nailed to the victors it's not over yet michigan 24 seconds away from setting up a very elite grouping in new orleans while we look at this date of march the 28th i'm gonna pass along a happy anniversary to your old partner al mcguire was on this date 1977 when al won the national championship over north carolina still remembering sitting there crying as the final ticks came down ian hank rick majerus hank raymond's victory juris great staff at marquette what a wine whoever comes back to help and howard will go to the line mckee said wait a minute didn't he travel first jim what's so difficult against a press like this is that john chaney has taken the chance to say hey look they're not going to go long so he has put all five of his defenders on this end of on this half court so consequently what michigan's got to be thinking about is say hey this kind of lead let's one time just throw over those five men and get an easy layup otherwise it makes it very difficult to handle the ball two such tight confines two shots for juwan over one from the line today remember temple does not have a timeout remaining steve fisher has one in his pocket temple can fire up oh yeah three though hey they surround you with three ivy not bad either makes it a three possession game minimum seven point lead good idea to pick up full court make temple take some time off the clock nice job by jimmy king [Applause] it's a day for miss dunks brunson ivy drops back and while he did so he traveled jim ivy threw that ball backwards into the hands of not a teammate but an opponent does that remind you something of new orleans the pass to james worthy huh certainly did 11 years ago and we talk about so many things that seem to fall in patterns you mentioned it the other day the ncaa has been played here in seattle michigan won the rose bowl they won a christmas tournament in hawaii they lost to iu in ann arbor and they came here and won a national championship well those three things have happened to them this year as well they won the rainbow classic their team won the rose bowl and they lost to iu mckee has fouled out fouled out with 19 [Applause] points women's final four texas tech in vanderbilt followed by iowa ohio state first time ever two teams from the big ten getting to the women's national championship final four in the road to the final four show followed by the men's final four this is the order kansas north carolina first followed by michigan kentucky wow heavyweights [Applause] now there really is only five seconds left to go into this game if they cannot obviously win now they being temple three-point basket doesn't have to take it out of bounds michigan it wasn't easy but the fab five is headed back to the final four we talked about the magnificent seven at the start of this year [Music] 77-72 i think back to a poll two months ago two months ago we were saying this regular season is shaping up for a certain number of teams to make it certain teams to make it to new orleans as we look at the brackets the january 11th ap poll kentucky was number one michigan was number two kansas four north carolina five they've all been near the top all season long and now they're all headed down to new orleans one more time 12 o'clock eastern on saturday the women's final four texas tech vanderbilt iowa iowa state final four show pat o'brien james brown leslie visser mike francesa and billy will be there for the final four first game kansas north carolina followed by michigan kentucky chevrolet players of the game are rick brunson of temple and chris webber of michigan [Music] so we've dwindled it all down to four for billy packer i'm jim nancing from the kingdom michigan has won it here for all of us at cbs sports we'll see you saturday at the final four
