let's go to dr. dick Berggren I was cookie sensation Jeff Gordon who has won his first ever career pole for this race at Charlotte he's got no wins in 1994 but he's got a pair of seconds one of the right here in the spring Jeff your crew chief says this is your racetrack the one you're best suited for is today your day well a camping you know if we make all the right things happen so far it's been a perfect week for us and you know we've got to have good pit stops got to stay out of trouble and if we could do all those things it could be our day but it's gonna have to wait to see working with me on pit road today as Johnny Hayes John Ernie you've had a great year you jumped in this car your qualifying up front you've won a race what do you think will happen today well I tell you those Texaco Havoline for Thunderbird has grove great since we got here on Wednesday and our outside pole is a pretty good run but it's not what we're here for we're here to win and uh you know we're worried about winning that last lap and that's what it's going to pay for bringing home fall these guys worked hard they've done a great job it's not the Rick Benjamin Thank You Johnny we're here the sbpp Communications Center on a beautiful day more than a hundred thousand here to watch this battle for the Winston Cup championship and the victory here today well to tell you a little bit about Randy Pemberton one member of our crew normally on pit road well Randy's got a ride today he'll be driving the garage area this car he's on the injured list but would glad to have him back there Johnny Hayes on pit road course the driver doing the chasing in that battle for the Winston Cup title starts way back in the eleventh row Johnny has made his way back to Rusty Wallace we're walking on our way back to Rusty right now you can see it's a long way back he's got a long way to go to the front rusty I had to run a long way to get back to you boy you got me tired and I'm breathing hard how we go get to the front well you're pretty smart you know Johnny and I told you before that I think I'm a run pretty good when I got a good calm down you I think that's another damn Jeff car is strong today we had a really work for these little cans I think that the I think that's a soil to hurt us a little bit but it made us work that much harder I think you're going to see the star bird go right to the front but that'd be real smart a lot of cars for me I don't know about let the picture what home today a little bit I get up in front well I pick you last time good luck okay Dave the points leader Dale Earnhardt has a good starting spot he'll take the green in the ninth position but Dale everybody's talking about how unstable these cars are can you hang on to this thing for 500 miles so what we're here for cars been having a pretty good practice I think we'll be okay Dale Earnhardt he'll take off from ninth while we're getting set for the national anthem we've had the usual pre-race ceremonies some of which we'll show you here hey humphy wheelers great facility there you see part of the crowd and 42 cars have qualified a couple of provisional starters in the back Neil as we wait for a Randy Travis to sing the national anthem this gets down to a totally different picture than what we've experienced in probably 15 years on this track you know there's I guess let's go down for the night laughing right there see what so proudly we hail'd at the twilight's last gleaming whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fine all around park we watched were so gallantly streaming and the Rockets red glare the bombs bursting in air gave proof through the night that our flag was still there oh say does that star-spangled banner yet wave or the land of the free and the haha [Applause] a beautiful version of the national anthem from Randy Travis if we get set for racing in Charlotte North Carolina well earlier this week the whole conversation down here in the garage area has been about the rule changes that NASCAR has defected and trying to slow the cars down both here in Atlanta 190 miles an hour to turn one here 195 about down it Atlanta for that last race November 14th they're trying to volum down a little they brought them down two miles an hour in qualifying but the issue is can they slow them down in this race let's take a look at what they've done Neal has filed this report NASCAR is continuously trying to make these cars more stable protected drivers and the fans we've seen someone fly lately I can attest to that but the biggest thing they're doing right here on this rear spoiler this thing used to be six and a half inches high they cut it down to five took a lot of downforce off this trunk area holding rear wheels on the ground they got a lift a little bit earlier they're not you're as stable the next thing they did they checked these cars right here back from the hood excuse me back from the roof a half inch higher they made them raise them up in turn getting the whole body height up in the air slowing them down trying to stabilize the car and then a place that's really effective on these cars they're always working on this frontal area these race cars to get them sloped down as close to the ground as they possibly get them they used to be at three and a half inches they raised them up to five now the air is going under the car in turn I think it's not as stable the driver has to lift a little bit sooner the thing they're trying to do is help them when they turn these cars around backwards we've seen them in the past get backwards air goes on the hood like a parachute look here they put a little flapper in the Cowley's on both sides of the Cal area when the car gets backwards catches air like a parachute this releases the air the car tries to stay on the ground it's just kind of trial and error right now hopefully this is right here these new changes will keep the cars on the ground want to have problems let's go down for the command to fire the engines and begin the mellow yellow' 500 quite a chorus here levels or 100,000 probably 130 cheering as the engines get bent on their way drivers ready for 500 miles 334 laps at the Charlotte Motor Speedway there you see Bobby Hillin settling in with car number 90 as we get ready for a go this afternoon derrike cope a little further back in the field he set hailey opera's car coming to life and darrell waltrip ready for action carrying our onboard cameras today let's talk a little about what the rule changes can mean in the 500 today and first go to Johnny hey in Gary Nelson math farther in a no-win situation they've got a problem we've gotten closer to cars down they tried everything they can the cable from getting airborne Gary Nelson brought the Pontiac and the Chevrolet and the board here to do a test to make sure if I would cover rusty said he was comfortable Ricky Rudd's and he was comfortable then they get back and then they have complained that the car that I working just right it's just a tough deal the bottom line the cars are going two miles an hour faster down the straightaway and they were before the change to slow down and slow them down in a burn but not on the straightaway dr. dick Berggren well Ken it seems to have differentially affected the various banks of cars if anything chevrolet hasn't been much affected at all and neither his Ford but it has in fact hurt the Pontiac that's going to small Trump when he took the spoiler away it made the back into the car a little bit loose the Pontiac drivers are not getting ready to give up on this thing by a longshot but they're going to have their hands full this afternoon brandi tempers well the whole thing is gentlemen are driving loose race cars you talk about Ernie Irvan Dale Earnhardt Rusty Wallace all being able to drive a loose race car that is in fact what it's going to be able to take here today in order to go to Victory Lane but how lose the race card you want to drive if a chassis man can get a car where it sticks through the corners maybe neckties and want to go to Victory Lane here today the advantage has to go to the guys that can drive a loose race car you cannot tell me a good chassis man is it'll be a strong part of winning this race here this afternoon Rick Benjamin well a good chassis man may reside in the pits of Mark Martin today a lot of folks we talked to this morning I think that Barton is going to build on his strong victory yesterday the Busch Grand National race he was more than a mile an hour faster than everybody else yesterday in the final practice we'll see how it plays up Neil a lot of drivers can drive them loose hearted kind of Wiggles out there but the drive fast and loose really got a limited number of people that have that kind of pencil there are several the drugs that like newspapers you think of Rusty Wallace earn art then I think it can't be guys for pencils carbs and Walter it's going to take several decades give you the answer I don't have any idea what's going to happen and these are these guys on the other side of the fence here we're going to turn them loose see if they go fast if they're still on the ground it could be full of a lot of spins we don't know what's going to happen yet when you talk about fast and loose usually talking about Earnhardt Gant I like Jimmy Spencer even Waltrip back in those old days that car is working the way you want it you want somebody to manhandle it Harry Gant always a guy just to get that kind of job done to the guy that told the Pope young man Jeff Gordon just got out of sprint cars dirt cars he's over in this type racing now he's ran sideways all his life he's young he doesn't know any better he's liable to put on a show today but we need Neil bond in that group let's take a look at the starting grid for today's 34th annual mellow yellow' 500 it's presented by Havel Jeff Gordon is on the pole 22 year old freshman youngest Winston Cup pole sitter in 41 years and alongside his fifth straight run row start at Ernie Irvan 402 it's Geoff Bodine tonight he won winner of the event and Ken Schrader who wanted matey 9 ro 3 today is Bill Elliott the 84 and 87 champion here and Greg sacks his best start of the season row for defending champion here Mark Martin and Ricky Rudd in row five at the five-time Charlotte winner Dale Earnhardt and Brett Bodine 406 first slide in the Morgan McClure's Chevrolet for joe nemecheck and Rick mast alongside in row 7 Harry Gant fair won this race in 82 from the pole last man to do it derrike cope the former winner of the Daytona 500 in row 7 row eight Jimmy Spencer he had a fourth place here one year back in his first ride for Bobby Allison and Morgan Shepherd row nine is Todd Bodine the third brother in that Bodine clan from chiwung New York and Rick Wilson making one of his final ride to the petty Pontiac in row 10 today it's rich Bickle short track case in Wisconsin and Michael Waltrip in row 11 Rusty Wallace is there and alongside the 84 Winston Cup champion Terry Labonte four row 12 Hut Stricklin and the sixth time charlotte winner Darrell Waltrip row 13 is Andy Hillenburg at sprint car star from Indiana and Ted Musgrave row 14 is Dick Trickle and Bobby Hamilton row 15 is Jim solder and Jeremy Mayfield row 16 today is Kyle Petty who finished third here last year and Jerry O'Neill in row 17 Wally Dallenbach and Sterling Marlin for Row 18 Mike Wallace and Blake seed row 19 Bobby Hillin and Dale Jarrett with his worst start all here back in 38 spot wrote warning his sad little and John Andretti making his second Winston Cup start provisional starters Bobby Labonte starts 41st on the inside of road running what Kenny Wallace rounds out to have one starting grid Randy Hillenburg he moved to the rear of the field he starts deadly and he wrecked his car in practice and had to go to back of course when he was dead less than 29 bringing him out of the line that he was in and sending him to the rear car number 75 pulls down onto pit road Todd Bodine out of Chillon New York temperatures at 76 degrees today just about perfect good overcast for today but in and out of the clouds is not like racing at night is until the junior Johnson we see him getting ready to start let me take you in the sunshine the cool track to hunt drag limitate then the least of the worries I think he's got a certain one kind of core of what kind of race have they got a million-plus today 42 cars running 334 laps for 500 miles there are three races left after today the point battle a 72 point differential as we go into it Rusty Wallace has been carving away at Dale Earnhardt's 300 point lead back at the end of August onboard with Darrell Waltrip as he gets set to sail in the Western Auto car number 17 this afternoon here's Bobby Hillin taking a look up through the field for car number 90 as he gets set for ago and there's Derek hope ready for action this afternoon pace car bringing the field down getting set for a start [Music] Randy Travis to drop the green over the field today yellow yellow and coca-cola talking about a 10-year deal with a Charlotte Motor Speedway not talking about it they signed the deal today they're going to be here for some time to come here comes a deal rolling down for a start Gordon getting a bit of a break and he's away in front for just a moment earlier but right back as the car 75 rolls off of pit road already having a problem Todd Bodine they said he's been black flagged I'm not sure what that's about came as I did black flag there's one day one Ernie Irvan one in front like that player Gordon inside here comes Jeff look at Jimbo time three deep going into turn three yes beau died another seven o'clock line up with the second slice fine earlier than out of line a lot of concern about the drivers when they get in traffic they don't know exactly how these cars gonna feel they're faster demonstrate away because they need that spoiler intended but to see what happens top design comes back on the track and he's overlap as they wheel down the back straightaway it's urban in front Geoff Bodine in second Jeff Gordon in third screener and Greg sack on or cami w as he storms up through the field coming around that lap bar of chocolate I'm Terry Labonte directly in front of 55 car right there they're on the inside going back to the front good scramble for second place bow tie another challenge Jeff Gordon's there Jeff Gordon pressing on the inside looking for any kind of a hole to open up get back into second place was ernie irvan bras away in the early going they look 24 car Jeff Gordon has really been strong all week I think because who lead the race earlier back in the 48 got a big jump Oney and I tried to be eighth position right behind Mark Martin yes outside our gorgeous bill earlier tried to move up in the number 11 the red cars bill early they left behind the alert heart Ernie Irvan out in front that's the 17th race he's led this year at number six car right there in front of Earnhardt that's the cars is your big numbers in practice really quick in all the practice they thought he might be the man on the go but talk about all the go on the outside going down in turn three Earnhardt trying to get around makes it work that's the tough way to do it they made some major changes on our car today they would question which way to go cars been quick but they wanted to make some changes they tried it was like it might help the global Ricky Rudd resident Brennan kid his cars quick Rusty Wallace 18th position closing on derrike cope in the 98 Harry Gant just in front of him now remember they've got that very short rear deck on those Pontiacs in the Pontiac copes with a very unhappy all week about the conditions under which they're running a just don't have that much space we down for it monthly home on the outside Rusty Wallace on the inside battle for 15 now as Wallace kicked off Gantt those for Derrick Coakley has it attitude you know we're hearing everybody say the cars to do an institute that there goes rusty successes but it's rusty still sounded very confident when we interviewed him earlier I'm not so sure they're telling us the whole story that car looks good to me as they come around to complete six laps Ernie Irvan drives away it's Geoff Bodine under challenge and Jeff Gordon for second Greg sacks runs in fourth graders in fifth Ricky Rudd's in seven six Earnhardt from seventh Mark Martin at eight Elliott ninth Rick mast and 10th floor Gonzalez 12 laps 80 miles complete by one and 7/10 Ernie Irvan out in front of now Dale Earnhardt in second place wasting no time moving through traffic Earnhardt has pulled himself up into second position take a look at this pass just a moment ago Keaney got a run off the second turn drove the car down under the 24 of Jeff Gordon like the car stick right here right on the bottom of the track pulls up in front of him coming out of turn forward it's a lot of chanting at the second place car or experience well I say I think this ruling with a little bit of looseness might be coming Earnhardt's way no he didn't mind wrestling one ran in Rusty Wallace back there he's coming on up also Wallace on the move is now in the 14th and Gant has jumped up into 13th Harry Gant remember was behind Wallace from last and reported to you on him he picked up a couple of three spots here you see the leader sinking second win one for the first time in that date car at Martinsville Virginia here's Leslie Wallace man just in front of the 33 meanwhile look at Gordon fighting with Earnhardt another time as they battle for second you know past him here comes Gordon right back while they're doing this when you are here and just check it out because erase real hard it's up to ten one and eight now one in a tenth of a second between first and the second place battle of Earnhardt and Jeff fort [Music] outside the top ten what is now intense Spencer's 11th Gantt well Lodi 13th is Gantt continues to mount an assault toward the front Wallace 14 Wilson in the 44 15 joe nemecheck he's under 60 Derrick Coleman 17 strict with his 18th 19 Wally Dallenbach 21st cement Sterling Marlin 22nd we see the rusty wallet come through there the key to his move to the front he said himself he's got to be careful he's got a lot of cars in front he's taking his time but he's working his way to the front and he's worked his way into 12th position now Rusty Wallace putting that Pontiac up to 12 remember how the Pontiacs have been fuming and fussing all week Neal you think they were telling us a story it seemed to me they really had a point to make but they just didn't have the handle earlier on I don't doubt that this forward thing is going to help court manufacturer hurt one may expect more than the other but Rusty Wallace and his team loaded up they went to the wind tunnel Monday after last Sunday's race so they put in a lot of effort to get that car right meanwhile Bill Elliott in the junior Johnson car comes up to a six spot let's go to Johnny Hayes in your cars running well at the start we had a bunch of new rules how did that affect everything well yesterday dress has done it the morning practice our car was perfect yesterday didn't he he couldn't drive it at all so we really asked the board in Plexus can't accommodate everything worked out right now whoever hits is gonna be fine especially I was gonna have pigs tears and Roquefort red for the day I played well right now picking his way choosing the low line Elliott trying to close on Twitter he picked up a couple of car lengths in the past laughs or so now you were looking at Kyle Petty and look at this battle to give you for second what a story on Kyle from 31st he's up to 17th in that 2 car 42 Pontiac look at this war on the inside Gordon the pole sitter right alongside Dale Earnhardt where's the early Wallace but he moved up Harold the race track at three and four and it seemed to be fast for him a couple moves up describe looks like it looked like Gordon he'd get hurt if we get tired but decisions can you get that momentum off the corner pinching the car in the bottom so these guys are fishing around travel at a place with a tractor run and as they run side by side they squander the opportunity to close here but he's checked out he's out front like three seconds now I'm not sure they're squandered I think he was check it out anyway that's like his is running these guys are racing still side by side that means awfully early to be linked up in a war like this with a moment court here copter and my wife back dynamite breaking and laughs let's see coming up 21 well you just said again the name of the game is racing it's not ride and the racing we do nowadays and we're suggesting you raising the family got a great flag to the checkered these guys are running just as hard to building of the race all these little changes as you watch her and hard on the bottom of the racetrack Gordon alongside Courtney goes back into second spot boy for an early race battle we've got a dandy and it's Jeff Gordon once again taking that high road here comes Earnhardt enrollees back running aside they come out of turn number four he settles in behind from Oh McHale are you for or against it's like I always give us a couple raises a little time in the window and we have cars dialed back in and set back the racetrack so if it'll slow the car down in the race and F students are cops what they won't do that for the sixth player and I'm for that [Music] meanwhile Ernie Irvan pulls a ladle almost a four second lead three and my intention checked out this interval between that car in the lead and your battle for second spot here's Gordon back to second in third is Earnhardt behind the number 68 car country time car then Bill Elliott fits three or six Barton seventh Harry Gant to eight with mass tonight Ricky Rudd to tenth Spencer Wallace whoa I take Gordon I thought when it first started he might be able to take leave look this 28 car barrier right around the bottom of the racetrack II or the new cars run it over the white line all the way through the corner so that car is really working so assisting abs Forks with aerial coverage to this mellow yellow' 500 supposed to break Vestas the best of break can begin this Victor of the battle for second place welcome back to the Charlotte Motor Speedway we take a high above turn to as Jeff Gordon tries to find a way to track down Ernie Urban it's been ernie irvan's joe so far here in the early going today at the Charlotte Motor Speedway maybe Ernie can add a few dollars to his prize bunny stake out of here today of more than a million on the line the true value folks true value has the hard charger money posted today 5,000 today a $50,000 season-long first available for the drivers who lead the most laps of run of the top five of those laps so far this season Dale Earnhardt's leading the standings followed by Rusty Wallace mimicking the Winston Cup boys Park Park Ernie urban is fourth and Kyle Petty took we'll keep you posted on the two value battle here all afternoon long good battle right here there you see Jimmy Spencer down on the inside Ricky Rudd on the high side as they battle for tenth position Kevin we're still a lot of guys watch hood when he goes in his corner he takes a real high line that's the line of about three or four years ago and that's exactly what we've done to be great though little back for years with this Paulo that's about the team they were in you know a lot of cars try to high land on the racetrack Ron going for tenth position against Jimmy Spencer and for the moment the Meineke car stays with it holds a spot actually pulls away look at this that and that is a nice one that's going on the 11 car Bill Elliott back in fifth spot battling with Harry Gant on the inside Johnny aids is standing by with their enhanced routine Leo Jackson's car running real well and coming johnny hadn't done a word you know he's nice a lot of guards look like he did pretty good hair again the great driver the loose race car we all talked about that earlier some cars go away and give me to get better this may be his day Jenna there's a good chain thinking when the gate when we used to go to Dover and some of the tracks have really got slick at the race again it get up on that wall he pried him a place to race you fun anymore Jack you dig around and keep a groove and here he is a little bit different for the page he's coming to the front remember what's happened cars a little more difficult to handle lifted them up a little higher and therefore you have to get out of the swaddle a little earlier used it a little more gingerly through the turn faster in the straightaway a little slower in the corners and they were before but those that can travel those corners sideways are the ones you want to watch today look at Ernie Irvan with a four second advantage think about this kid in second spot just kid right there he continues to work Jeff Gordon in that second spot Earnhardt who really knows how to get that car sideways and still Harry Gant holds up through Rusty Wallace doing a good job he continues to close on these leaders he's up to 11th better than for second advantage for Ernie Irvan inner Vito the [Music] family loaded that car it's been quick it is driven good he's showing up here Scott we talked about his cow pity he's got a different client rabbit place a closely he rose out of the gas early you won't ever see he jumps the car up off the corner when you got these kind of situations if you can have it discipline post acharyas lead it through the corn boarded up straightaway Cal could get the front also he's one of the guys who runs the part of it astray check all day Kyle in 10th position from 31st there's one party active flying at battle with the 42 car by 12 seconds back from the leaders we're running lap 34 51 miles have been completed change that 35 now we'll all be at Qualcomm yesterday a record these cars wore ill-handling the grand national cars stopped reporting that 300-mile race yesterday drivers really staying on top of them in the early going well their habits again I think this first pit stop whenever we have a caution or whenever we make that first green stop you're going to see these crews go to work those a couple of three of these cars they're in good shape the rest of or they've got their hands and she watch these number 28 lines floating around these corners with Modesto California Ernie Irvan at the controls they make some changes I believe with his car this morning dick Berggren how about it well guess we're just about everybody was changing their car this morning except the 28 crew Robert Gates today said he had a choice we decided to not change the springs on the car we came to valve springs in the engine very fun fun engine about 25% of all of those who start blow up before this race is over they're not worried about the car dick I tell you what you know of all things that happen the Winston Cup voters it's usually that found train they got connected brought pranks yes block the manufactures have built six bulletproof pieces the thing that gives triples or valve springs in the valves because they abuse them so much and you see a lot of things but each Springs on a race morning coming around to complete 38 laps with Ernie Irvan first Earnhardt and Jeff Gordon continuing their war as they battle it out a little further back for the moment it's Jeff Gordon in second Earnhardt having to settle to third but he won't settle for anything but first he is this way about it we'll see how that develops in the afternoon [Music] back at the Charlotte Motor Speedway the mellow yellow' 500 working last 43 was Ernie Irvan in command we're watching the progress or the lactam save on the part of Ken Schrader the FET Missouri campaigner who started this afternoon in fourth spot they've changed to motors in that car one yesterday afternoon before the final practice butter was vibrating they put another engine in today before the start of this race not working out straighter backing up in the field at the moment hopefully he'll get it sorted out I've been frightened with 43 laps complete of the 334 to the run interval continuing developed he just laughed Morgan Shepherd and started 16th the sky and Earth Ernie Irvan defeats of this place he's gonna start lack of a budget to raise doors Sterling Marlin in the number eight he has come 14th position started 34th on the day and the Raybestos car working very well for the ski bola brothers as thoroughly Marlon tries to break that jinx 9 second place finishes but never a winner never here at Charlotte he had a 600 won by a lap and blew a tire the time running out early modern having a good run thus far as he continues to clip them off but the man really on the move right now is Harry Gant who was up to 5th position in his Chevrolet number 33 you see Terry Labonte number 14 hello on five right behind at number eight and they are running 14th and 15th respectively here's Jeff Gordon running second here's dick Berggren there's trouble with a 24 car Ken Squier in fact there's double trouble with the 24 one of the problems that they're having the radio is not working properly Gordon is unable to talk to his crew although his crew can talk to him now the crew just has been a couple of laps ago when you come by at this lose weight and we saw a critic wave through the window before the radio went out Gordon was complaining on nearly every lap the car is getting looser and looser in the corners there goes great sacks up into third spot Earnhardt falling to fourth and here comes Harry Gant dance down the inside flips group that's Gant into fourth Earnhardt dropping back if you think the story here is Neal well he's been falling off the pace there's facts we've been running a really good race along with Gant they were working together come in the front face would set a tremendous run and a great qualifying day for Greg sacks Neil Bonnett I want opposed this more as a question about Dale Earnhardt now we talked about the possibility of him being able to drive a loose race car he's being able to bring it up on the high side down on the low side what about a loose race car during this race is that where the player is now more so than if the car track through to the court doubt about it the cars looser spin into rear wheels are slipping a little bit it's going to wear some a lot of guys make changes this morning it looks me like Earnhardt got his car a little loose he just can't get going like he wants to but we're seeing about six or seven of the top guys fate a little bit look here you know we talked about that again early that Phinehas it looks like the 68 cards that the viewer right Randy to top the show the guy just got the chassis he's going to go to the front if it's not hailing I'll get CT driver gets brother hard start to fade up sale Greg sacks who failed and wanna live just a week ago in North Wilkesboro having a great run here holding third spot here comes Earnhardt back beneath Gant for we might walk up Coverdale pit road while we watch you protected here Jimmy Spencer pitted and went a lap down we had this confrontation going on Spencer has gone a lap down and now number 30 comes in a bit early at lap 49 the Pennzoil Pontiac he'd already been the layout got way behind so they go ahead to play took coach James had a great run yesterday won 2nd place 2 grand national event why parks weather in Hartford Gudrun he passed away or how about there being his second four tires all the way around because every time we stop today you boy those gonna build good if you've been at this slide with the flood afford you and feel like a failure to the ground for you qualified in 30th spot that car backed up to 38 it's still this man lonesome urban out in front seven second advantage first 50 laps are complete with nary a sign of caution the squire in the event they said it would either be a runaway or wrecked that was the prediction for HEA humpy wheeler the promoter where the changes that NASCAR had put into effect when I didn't think anyone was bigger than Ernie Irvan and either runner well I like to talk about what he's coming somebody hits on the chance it drives away that thing he gates got a lot of motor if they get it where he smashed that throttle he's gonna drive wait he's doing it Earnhardt coming back whenever he dropped off a couple of position here he is on the inside of Greg Shack [Music] the models with an earlier start that's life in the 52nd lap it is Earnhardt in the number 309 the third spot urban leads Gordon still in second so is Lord Chevy Chevy with the present time and Here Come Terry can't moving back through again for car coming in don't never take over the bull car this week he just turned to have hit road where it dips into last [Music] Greg sacks falling back to this position realistically Greg sacks as we watch them don't have a check making that change the Betty grand national champion going all the way around on tires and they're making a bit of an adjustment there if they can find good fighters above it back in all thing right near Jackson which puts buy it for real loser try to tighten it up 53 laps complete Greg sacks a bit of a surprise out here as he continues to run in fifth spot yeah that's just a little bit early company and they're talking about coming in it he's about 20 laps ahead of everyone else so he must been really loose laughing everybody get one hooked up like that enormous mass everybody Grail looks like getting us Walter directly from Daryl Walker of a big win at this racetrack nervous just about the left him Bobby Hillin the highlig Myers car going a lap down and now receive some connectivity on pit road here cost race back rolling in and Harry Gant or pay that looseness of these race cars but they could stop early for tires here's Johnny hey Craig fax is having an outstanding run jump to the fifth everybody's over the wall this is where it's made folks make a good stop to get back out front if you don't you're in trouble the right-side tires on there talking to victim for tires of roughly 20 seconds see what kind of stop it gets out is right here Gant had a very good pit stop and he's back on the way and going by taxi and down close top on Greg's ax car the Jackson teen had an excellent stop on number 33 it stops coming up we're at lap 56 of the 34th annual Kelly yellow five hundred the Charlotte Motor Speedway live on TBS this afternoon stay with us for all the action 60 laps 90 miles have been completed there you see Ernie Irvan out in front he is a remarkable part of the story but look at this this is even more remarkable for pride that is the 31st clock Kyle Petty going to third our number 42 Kyle Petty's Pontiac is up into third position what a ride he's giving Bill Elliott brings in number 11 the fifth place car Derrick colt is on pit road Contrave is in watching that tick stop on Elliott crater coming in right behind it going to work out more the whole fuel Lord therefore tire would that stop it before they refuel here's Earnhardt coming and running in fourth position Wallace will come up to fifth and these pit stops Rick mast and then running 60 content run he's running seventh so they're all pulling in here looks like they're watching each other dick Berggren spear our kids choir women listen to the radio here that's exactly what they're doing once if you laughs of always hope stay out stay out wait till the 28th comes in father 28 in but Rusty Wallace has drove in front of 28 kids and Ernie Irvan is still on the racetrack he should be in here in the Vlasic you Ellen and Kyle Petty now 50 was up to third spot Irvin and Gordon first and second have yet to pit learning urban out in front and building that [Music] the early going stays out there we are now in lap 62 they should go a hundred hundred five miles easily here yeah they come and import any bill because they're not Hammond with the night there is that all these people don't want to happen is the caution to come out right now with two cars that haven't hit in the rest of minion or will it scramble the fill up they everyone hopes they had to go green into the leaders did now with these pit stops the advantages twelve and a half seconds between Ernie Irvan and Jeff Gordon has urban drives away from the field to keep putting too much pressure on that motor no I think people deserve it turning down pit road right now the leader company in the Kirkland standing by the Ernie Irvan Robert the Texaco Havoline part down [Music] fifty-five today perfect [Music] before he named it pitstop Ernie Irvan with gold watch your fuel pressure like watch your fuel pressure life so they may have stretched to fuel a little bit more than we might have brought two pumps on the Jack Norris okay let's fight about ready to go hi 20.8 nice top Ernie Irvan that's about as good as topic we see no pit road are a teaser the FEA Scarface pictures will be hard to handle Gordon brings the DuPont Lumina down pit road critical stop here what we saw accomplished a moment ago by Ernie Irvan [Music] this is a young team right here driving the whole team to go continue they get the job difference what they do with Islam warp engine when we interview if there is critical Arkansas okay there they go to put some biding his car backing off there right where that puts mo five in the left rear please a dick with the kind of fix some of that good stop 20.2 right in it but still dominating the event the team dominated back to that part of the 28 is still in the pit stops as we get through lap 64 the 334 laps of Iranian 96 miles are down will get to 100 and a half miles at lap 67 we'll take a quick commercial break and be back with you former to buy more than 3 to 1 over B seats and only goodies beats a headache the way I prefer in record-breaking time [Music] 70 laps 105 miles complete in the 500-mile race of Iran at Charlotte North Carolina on CBS this afternoon Ernie Irvan out in front that it's still better than 10 seconds everyone has taken the first stop on the green they're averaging 161 miles an hour through that first 100 miles watch cars numbers 2 & 3 battling for 8th position Rusty Wallace fighting with Earnhardt at the slugfest 48 at the present time the record for this race is 153 miles an hour 161 right now and the battle for the championship is enjoying right here remember Earnhardt leaves Wallace by 72 points coming into this race and Wallace has been taking points away at the beginning of September in every event trying to get by him there and not thinking a lot it's crazy on things together one week they'll be battling for the lead first and second place develop great design quick better ones recently are on the racetrack they're racing each other every week now after these stops let's bring you up to date on where we are in the field 18 cars run in the lead lap urban first Kyle second part Martin third elegant fourth sack the leaders in traffic here Earnhardt in seventh Wallace eight Spencer nine and his ten mast 11 Rudd 12 Sterling Marlin 13th Dale Garrett back in 14th and trader in 15 well if you take a look like it was the early early comfortable ship boat on he qualified third so the 28 car six but that number seven a lap down and he was the third-place qualifier for the race we wondered how Claude Langton work out we didn't think it was as instrumentalist who would hit the car it was good in the race chat little in the 19 car when Ernie Irvan is just covering the boulder run him down hurry the jet boat onto the seventh or 18th position he's going to try everything you can dr. list at 28 5 because he's got a travesty that lead lap at the caution comes out Mervyn leading over Kyle Petty in second spot by 9 and a tenth of a second story Kyle Petty is telling here today that was a guy that we didn't talk about it one of those main handlers you can really after driven as gray the first 100 miles is anyone in Charlotte's ever seen outstanding run for Kyle Petty yes the key kin if we did MIT that he he's not running sadly he's not named hammer title he's the guy we were talking about that eases it down in the corner it sports it up down the straightaway he threw the car around the neighborhood doesn't abuse the tires that get the car loose and I'm telling you it's one of kind of racing need to be dumping for game making that food movie talk about traffic there's Ernie Irvan trying to put that seventh down but he got a lap car disputable bit of a hard time he'll jump in front of Ernie urban about 65 hits from Auburn New York ski got here several times and now making its way gingerly down on the bottom of the racetrack 28 Ernie Irvan hard to think of Ernie Irvan in the 28 is it like Nicole with it number different drivers let's see what they've got it's always said motors into Ripley straightaways apart last lap 164 mile an hour in traffic Ernie Irvan really wound up now you see the three car that is Dale Earnhardt who is in seventh spot Johnny Hayes is with car owner Richard Childress Richard Dale and have a whole lot of fun out there they hate the man they got a race side by side on what got a badge every Dale got back what's going on oh yeah we're just renting we had a band fence up our luck fell off so you know he's having to run a car a little harder right [Music] Atlanta had your brain thinking pretty good you think you hanging there like they are we just hope we do do as good as they did so far so you know we pull for them before those guys will run we're hoping in with this clutch boy you saw a breathtaking moment there Mike Wallace in the 52 great sack go right the worst part of the track when you're on the throttle coming off that corner take another gander at this one say Jeff Gordon goes around the outside of the 52 car he pulls the air off the 52 he slides right up in front of Greg sex sex did a great job not to hit him to turn 252 around and that was some of the lead cars there's Earnhardt on the inside that was a perfect example of what happens without that spoiler car going around the outside of the 52 pull the rear damper Bundoran nice save like saks falls back here a bit but what a great save he's back in eighth Earnhardt listen six Rusty Wallace is up to seven there's your leader Ernie Irvan he continues to scramble the field gets around the Kellogg car the Billy Hagen machine Barry Labonte moving on next you've got hands ready in this race and back some you're riding another one out John Andretti's a good addition to racing even 37th position of Winston Cup racing guys very determined rides on time to race were to see what comes about in 1994 question for you Neil Bonnett presidential sit down here in the sdpb communications center during the last round of pit stops dick Berggren pointed out how Ernie Irvan Pete was telling him to watch the fuel pressure gauge if he didn't go very far think again so these are dynamic changes the cars are higher less spoiler are they getting worse fuel mileage now I tell you I think the key to that thing is they're not sure just like we wasn't sure how it play out in the race you've got to be conscious I think we saw a lot of the leaders hit early until they got that first big - what kind of mileage the 28 was running so good he wanted to stay out and try to put people there I'll agree you know what to do but you're exactly right they caught up in the air is displaced the Boyer and his Bobby burger a lot more fuel urban as the Ford out in front 10 seconds plus all cars are still running after 125 miles everybody is still out here we're showing 82 laps an alkyl group we have been 30 for the distance if you just joining us Kyle Petty ere you see him in that second position from 31st he's brought that Pontiac up through the field great piece of driving my Kyle and in third spot is Mark Martin Kyle Petty concentrate yourself as driver today I'm in the top six and voice I say I'm gonna stop sticks and drivers - how about that but I'm not sure but I think we gotta talk a real road top team but I'm not sure I might be in the top ten at drivers I think it's taking a long time to get to be in the top hand and the drivers but you know if I was drinking I'd probably rank myself here right now he's in second just ten seconds back from the leader but behind him and closing ground is Mark Martin in the number six Martin put on a great performance yesterday in the winn-dixie six-cylinder Ford got him southeast sixth win of the season in that grand national series every race that Mark Martin has finished in Grand National there he is number six he's won this year they seem up the outside and around Jimmie soldered interval between second and third between the 42 and the six is one in nine tenths of a second I'd say mark Martin's car in practice every time you clocking he's as quick as anyone there if you'll remember we see Mark Martin win a lot of races he paces itself good he says I run the car as hard as I can because you can't steal handsome car left this guy could get to the front and he does he could write anybody up there 85 laps 120 seven and a half miles have been completed now let's go to dick Berggren Ken there's more in this number 6 car Mark Martin is radioed to his crew instead it's a bit loose female the crew chief says they can fix that on the next pit stop leaving a fiction believe it or not they've opened up the nose on this car earlier this week they cut it apart the sheet metal cool weld engages in reweld it makes it back over cleaned it up no wind tunnel after that change but they're trying to make both get better and the rear if I can stick a pretty decent right now looks good I tell you what sometimes the best window the best Dino is a black strip of asphalt out here best place to fix a race cars where you gotta race it the wind tunnel does help a little no doubt I just said I'm gonna say it to get in the wind home to get it closer they just dial it in deeper specific race dragon they got her working here riding with the highlig Myers car number 90 poppy Hill and giving you these pictures from 21st position more from the Charlotte Motor Speedway on TBS [Music] since they feel promotional fees in consideration of the TAFE I first brands corporation the makers of STV engine treatment helps stop engine wear before you start and by highly Myers furniture company the proud sponsors of Bobby Hillin Ford Thunderbird and by true value hardware stores got a tough job to do they'll see you through it you can do it with true value hardware stores 91 laps 136 and a half miles completed as an average speed of 162 miles an hour Ernie Irvan setting those electrics old record 153 for the 500-mile distance as you watch Darrell Waltrip here in car number 17 running in 24 he is a lap down while just following a laptop in the early going now at last 87 Bernier's and moved out to lap ken schrader pulled that off straighter gave him a bit of a fight then on lap 89 Terry Gannon fell off his perch going down the back straightaway just backed right up in front of two cards nearly got collected he's come into the pits he's back on the track let's get more on the story right front tire everything's okay with the car just got a tire down Thank You Johnny hey I think what you could have a right brother Eric thought hit the wall here again the sort of her dress and the right thing usually a right front here means a big right front in college he didn't get the wall saw the 17 car there for a moment just in front of Gant who is now back in 35th position Charlie I'll lap down he's got some running to do to get himself back to that lead lap there's one guy that can get it done here the last man should bring the pole and win this race Harry Gant 1982 there's a guy that nut can't get it done but it is getting it done they go ahead like him repaint that line he's wearing the bottom line out and then there's there's Dale Jarrett directly from his 12th place last guy on the lead lap that's gonna make it eleventh orally so that wig along with Jarrett's car when he got behind compare this level cars lifted and rent in the lead lap now Rick mast carnival one envelope so it's going to make it ten cards in the leaflets of mass was eleventh car looks pretty rugged guys what if he shoot them there's Kyle Petty in second spot here's the curve Randy Pemberton so much of the talk before this race is about the problems the Pontiac fight hasn't here you are in second let's cook it I don't know we got a real good job that time and gained a couple of spots help us do not use fire Bernie's still outrun the buck he sent the laughs thank God he's went into a lot of traffic so far so maybe we can work on it later maybe lon I plan taking credit a lot better his expression would indicate you're exactly right dick Berggren they had a good stop but he started way back in 30-something position and moved up to fourth on the green before that stop so they got a good stop on him but he's in on that wheel he raided his 10th I rate him about second right there you move it up to the front diet makes a difference somebody's gonna check out a little restaurant in upstate New York there his brother of course today kids know a whole lot about racing and they love it they came out of the Albany Saratoga Speedway years ago where Saratoga racing across the country thoroughbreds and all they wanted with thoroughbred modifies an area Havisham Bugsy Stephens and range are land use to hang around that restaurant and those kids when they were tiny Burton is the guy responsible now with a Felix avetis number 42 pursuing that garden so some of the credit today certainly goes to him see what else tell you about how if we we can really bring that shot over right now I promise you 100 miles from now if that car is working that's where Caliphate he runs that bottom he doesn't abuse those tires the Lee's are there you'll stay right on that line working on the bottom all day they get it just like he wants they look about as calm and collected as Kyle the crew for Kyle Petty looking on as he tries to close on Ernie Irvan but nobody is getting much of him today he had just checked out in Italy how about a battle support [Music] mr. Lillian alert mark bill's been running high all day we talked earlier that he moved up in a real hot Guru Granth the racetrack bill had a lot of success here with that High Line working at their 700 right here but Elliot's car should drive in his corner that outside you won't know the different lands rather stretch 100 laps have complete meal 150 miles down and Mary caution to date averaging 162 well over the old record Ernie Irvan in command here at Charlotte in the 34th running of the metal yellow 500 who won a 212 1984 at Nashville International Raceway 420 laps over the light bill Waltrip in the 11th star started on the pole and seemed to be unstoppable that night Richard setting in the familiar 43 and the 12 car Neil Bonnett were battling their way to the front to the contention for the victory also following close behind Walter Braun will start at the 47 yard in position to win throughout the night Geoff Bodine in the five car was also a strong identity looking for a second career which is a victory but who won the Phoenix to this remarkable event in a moment [Music] [Music] [Music] if you pick darrell waltrip you're right here's how the event unfolded while drip in the O bottom of the junior Johnson tire stole the show for the rest of the pack battle back and forth led all the three of the final 184 laps at Nashville two to go caution on the Speedway and crash involving Rusty Wallace to the 88 Bobby Allison to the 22 car and Kyle Petty of the seven all getting involved laughter the leader Waltrip had already taken the yellow flag bonnet zipped around him it was like the winner days later though NASCAR ruled Waltrip the winner Sabin bought it illegally passed under the caution flag who won is brought to you by Budweiser the king of beers with that clean crisp cold days nothing beats a bud well welcome back to the Charlotte Motor Speedway lap 107 Ernie Irvan still doing it out there nothing going on in the garage area totally lonely thank God I have a television monitor but this is the inspection station that's where they're going to bring the top five powers plus one other car random after this race is over to tear them all down in a panel looks like Ernie Irvan will be in here among others but nothing going on the garage area maybe that's because these guys are able to get out of the throttle a little bit right now save it on those engines supporting think on a Natasha when terminators fight let's get started through so we're getting back toward a pit-stop period of the race with 116 laps now complete of the 334 to Iran bomb the Charlotte Motor Speedway great aerials being provided by Rev Estes the best and breaks back shortly rakh Brent okay get it warmed up before a Robert Yates engine makes it to the track it's torture tested right here let's do it there's only one motor oil games relies on protection formula 3 same family formula 3 you could buy right off the shelf 215 degrees bake 7000 desperate rating a balloon formula 3 motor oil in Texas run it like a winner didn't get the job done Mark Martin coming out of pit road in lap 120 we've completed 180 miles consider this of all cars school running the event one of the other points tenders is to see the leaders here Irvin Teddy Martin Dale Earnhardt and Jeff Gordon experiencing trouble weigh very heavily today with all these guys out here running Mark Martin going all the way around they're putting some more wedge in that one not only that you see the guys beating the rears for if he who changed the angle so Mark must still be really lose they're doing a couple of three different things at a time to turn successful good stuff 20 and 9/10 second excellent stop the Gordon trying to make up a little time coming down pit road Jeff Gordon in car number 24 leaders started early that knocked one alone got hold of the game teams hectic right here and knocking that rears for were up trying to bail the back of that car down a bit more sinter secular will keep it even across there if any of those point leaders have trouble in this race all these cars still running there's going to be a remarkable change in the point of anybody could fall out in the next 30 or 40 mile and you've still got so many cars out here don't know I get across here we just different rating as well go in there that surgery those like you heavy business garage records most charge wanting it to finish the Nelly yellow 504 times they've had 28 running everybody that started still out for 42 strong little later something to jeopardize the don't go down pit road Grizzard are coming in just saw Gordon from the other top drivers in watch Earnhardt's crew go to work here they said the lug nuts fell off one of the wheels while ago we saw a little over 20 seconds if this was any better Earnhardt running in third when he pitted just a little bit quicker than before 20.2 because rusty wallet he started to hit road just as Earnhardt goes up Wallace comes in fourth place car and he pits in the Miller Genuine Draft car Rusty Wallace on pit road trying to close 17 points behind Earnhardt either of them have trouble today with the number of cars still out on the field at the base of dramatic difference he's got to be running today when infants over are you going to be in trouble those two guys it's got to be wonder when it's over Ricky Rudd on pit road running a lap down in sixth position finish the work on Rusty Wallace yep don't think that's wrong eighteen point seven I'm telling you those guys prank those stops outboard over time Elliott comes on to pit road now most tags the five in your time Ernie Irvan the leader leader is in Johnny hey what the jack man on it's our birthday all-pro the men in the business one of the cockpit crew boys this is the payoff he had to eat that legally what to work in beautiful poetry folks the folks on that jackets up there's Joey's uncle hold on the left front there's a guy doing the rear Jack down well that jack man lift off that handle Institute drop the club he's go a teen boy stories nice stock at lap 126 that allow Petty's came in dick bourbon there and it is not a good pit stop Mitchell over son line up it is going to be up Gary still gets off Wow the same part of the motor on in here let's cool not only does the 42 have trouble we told Hill ma gave that big road 32 seconds of appeal not sure what happened after junior Johnson the NASCAR inspectors in a big argument on pit road Jr in the 11 car and the five early got ruffled there there may be a penalty coming up on car number 11 get the one of the pit reporters down there with juniors crew right off you can see the a debate still going on there's much debate that's a real argument our police did I think they're going at it Ayers jr. he just crawled back over the wall when I looked down jr. was on the other side of the fence and he was helping with his argument I'm not sure what's up we saw come down we saw the fire part they had to charge him that might be the problem you try to fill Junior junior I got his great belt like you think I didn't give great bathroom hard [Music] they was a story like that that's where you need Johnny hey [Music] here's the 11 the jr. Johnson car jump John I wouldn't be the NASCAR official down here but they call for too many men over the wall but they're in total disagreement everybody got back so you got it on TV I don't know but I would like to be the guy in stand in front of Jimmie Johnson might be well it looks at the time but they won the battle because I don't see any kind of a black flag or anything with 11 or so they they get the point across I mean ahead over the coming two lap 130 of the 334 to be run just joining us nary a sign of caution does far in the race 195 miles let's look again at this car number 11 the Budweiser car making its pit stop you see him getting trapped there by Ricky Rudd coming out for a moment gets himself in now you count trying to kill his beer hitter II Benefield coming over with a gas can and I don't they let one guy clean the windshield only thing I see now juniors straps back on the headset your lever where we feel about it telling what he thinks wobbling about breeding [Music] derrike cope takes you for a 170 mile an hour ride around the high base relic Motor Speedway during the mellow yellow' 500 their scope working down roll into the quarter numbers do out onto the back straightaway great to have you along for the ride today on PBS resentment in the sdp communications center we talked a lot today about the points battle only three more Winston Cup races to go this year after today's event 72 points the point margin between Dale Earnhardt and Rusty Wallace at this point Dale Jarrett in third spot right now about 300 points behind he's been very consistent mark Barton rode all the way to fourth off those four victories in a row a few weeks ago Morgan Shepherd another picture of consistency insisted Kyle Petty going to show you the next six Kenny Schrader's very consistent Ernie Irvan who said two rides but has done very well Eliot Rudd Gordon Jimmy Spencer unheralded in many was such very consistent year for him too and he is rounding out the top 12 thanks rich Benjamin we've completed 36 laps 204 miles the average speed stays at 161 the killer speed for this race 153 the old record and there you see a guy who's doing it all Ernie Irvan for the moment this guy three more completed 136 the rest of the third 135 I'll tell you this he's worried about he's getting the whole field just about a lap down the patient run [Music] seven cards in leagues left right there Martin Kyle Petty Bernhard Spencer through fifth being shown that lead lap Rusty Wallace and six and seven years not what it is on the racetrack at all those are the cars showing new lead Latin let's go back to how they run Ernie Irvan first Mark Martin Kyle Petty Dale Earnhardt Jeff Gordon Jimmy Spencer and Rusty Wallace complete the top seven rusty the last guy on the lead lap here's the perfect ninja story on the number 28 the leader Ernie Irvan Ken Flair he started missing about two laps ago they issued boxes it has not helped the engine still missing that's what they were worried about before the start of the race the engine bought a rustic he's still cranking out some fast left but if he's called for missing that thing there must be something home a second game might be just as good on seven as a rest up boat all day it certainly appears that way you're trying to psyche you let me draw it away from everybody out here here's Johnny Hey maker weather team [Music] now at cloudy temperatures dropped about 10 degrees I used on a Winston Cup car Benny Parsons drove for me we almost last the field in the first half the rate here turns cloudy we had trouble holding on the lead lap pit crews plan to get real busy I tell you what happens when something like this does occur with their overcast coming in sometimes you see a different cast the character through the foot down sorry it was to lose all go now if I get too tight at the clouds exchanges with a leader moving up through the field 141 laps are complete most cars whining with the finish on a super speedway 55 1850 I made a sort of hundred seventy-five ok 1957 500 down there darling I don't know about one of the hotels by fall 574 still what on the rear try the wasn't when he fired all the wonderful 31 see if he's losing pace instead of HIPAA Department but that's a good race course is still going around he's got 20 seconds on the field here he is up on Jimmy Spencer some of the room at the 7th place car he's about to laughs yeah he's gonna win Spencer his car had some loans with the gay one he's got a building that makes your looks it out to be where are my glasses the Kyle Petty is third Jeff Gordon said on the polls back in fifth position 500 miles the distance tolling car in the law golf for sliding all the way around that great Bob Clark electing the wall of second time first caution of the day comes at lap 143 of 334 to be run caution out for the first time or Rusty Wallace were throttled the first to be a clam the coil has beat the courtiers back to the line when he hit the little feedback also that it was the 12 in the two that got a reprieve with that caution rusty was picked to go down but that's what it takes for getting good cars good luck there you see toddler died taking the Raima car back to the garage we actually have a second car back here we said everybody's running 85 they're working on it that 75 looks badly batch let's take a look at what happens it's going to happen coming off turn four if we think of it well the car gets loose we see the back end come out he's going to correct to the right whale right at the camera took the right front back off the car and he goes across Drake what's these guys behind him down got a couple of get people are going to pass him hi we see the 68 car break stack through the grass there's Billy coming along now why bike Waltrip for a day what'd he get it out by the wall and kept it out there while this was going on Spencer was able to beat the 28 back to the line also Rusty Wallace here's the 28 car on pit road let's go to defer his where they were just as confused here on pit road as we were in the broadcast because they heard the same stuff we were hearing which is Ernie Irvan saying the car has a mist which the box and they know different then he leaves the coil on this thing and that's the mercurial so the problem has gone away right now they're in the process of a foreign fire base here the one is going to stay down and there are one more smile between right now they have dual ignitions in these cars Jewell calls dual electric boxes and everything the driver can't switch it from in the driver seat so I guess he changed everything and got it working all right let's see if we can get a word right now with a man who has dominated the race Ernie Irvan Ernie Ken Squier at TDS control do you read us Ernie go to through the years over the piers get them selves on the back straightaway here try getting a moment together 145 laps are now complete two hundred seventeen and a half miles down and the five hundred to be run today moving toward half way first caution of the day comes out for young Bodine [Music] 147 laps 220 miles down and let's get the story of what happened to Todd Bodine right from the man himself [Music] here we see the car this is that piece bun coming back across the track but in the outside wall which boxcar I'd say Raymont butch mark taking over that team henceforward costume stays out on the track Michael Waltrip is in we going down to Todd Bodine in just a moment standing by down there if we took that hit we're getting ready for a restart and let us set it for you right now 148 complete when they come to the line when the urban will be leading Kyle Petty will be in second Mark Martin will be third Earnhardt fourth Gordon fifth Rusty Wallace six Spencer in seventh those are the cars in the lead lap after that daring move by Spencer in the Meineke car to get himself back in the lead lap aces Ricky Rudd a lap down followed by Bill Elliott ninth Sterling Marlin 10th 11th is Schrader 12 is Sachs and we have Dale Jarrett 13 Blake's speed 14 Geoff Bodine 15 Terry Labonte 16th and Rick Nicks life is off on the pace car as we get ready for another go here we late stop by Michael Waltrip has him playing catch-up he's driving quickly around the track joe nemecheck brings number four down pit road gets himself set last moments stop [Music] darrell waltrip back in 23rd position Gerald Walton a couple of laps now here's dick Berggren and the real problem with the pointing eight car believe it or not there's a whole bunch of switches on the dashboard of that thing to control the ignition system Ernie Irvan hasn't been driving that car long enough to know what all the switches are for so he's been fumbling around trying to figure out which one it was they think it's the coil switch that fix it they have a new coil ready it will go in the car if they have further problems the moment it's okay that's why there was confusion I think that sees you do because you have a ignition box one coil one you got to get the right set of sequences and I can understand anybody deal with it can have that problem quietly sound fields away let's see a pile and closed it at all if you read trying to get back order [Music] make yourself microfiber scholasticism third spot takes up the spot type one in a bit or for you here comes earlier than out in front mark while falling back to this year pile back to spots Martin and Earnhardt baklava on board the Bobby Hillin 4037 towers on the right type of Blue Bell way back he still dropped it back there everywhere will quote this is 7:35 is the battle for six ahead right up there on the restart in the runner-up position not true [Music] Kyle's still falling back you [Music] that's a sure Kyle's back down where he runs good on the inside that counts ID that will be you out hurting take a look at your favorite car here they go under car number one actually out of that dog leg and into one meanwhile back straightaway with the right in a position trying to get that lap back forms his own team next year very close to announcing and preaching here's Earnhardt to the outside around mark Barton that's the third of two second storms Earnhardt Martin Salzburg [Music] well right now ernie irvan's not getting away with pretty sound the earth's going to step left back course real stove we've got earth heart behind him patootie nobody has been able to overtake ernie irvan all day it's been all his own way he's blitzed the field but for the moment he seems to be contained earnhardt drafting with Ricky Rudd and that combination Chevy's trying to pull down the gates for thunderbird the board stays in front as it has all day but for the first time it's under some pressure Ernie Irvan in front earning you've adjusted to your new ride faster than anyone could predict basically I think a lot of revolves around in such a good race team and I got a lot of experience a lot of attraction when you get those things together then it doesn't take long closing riddle has really done a great job working with me and giving me the right setup so we get there we don't say fun so a lot of that bother revolves around all the testing he did was dating back straightaway Earnhardt he needs around Rudd and now he's reading a challenge Rudd falling back trying to make up that lap and now he finds himself about 15 car lengths behind and here comes Earnhardt anyone going to overtake Ernie Irvan here today he couldn't find out on the next slide lat we're at last 156 closing in on the halfway mark 234 miles are now complete for 48 million ever Lapham was that that was because of the constants of different things I think he's ever left and great suffering is going to be a short summation all urban and one caution three to nine six that's about where the record is they can build from here now our knee urban drives away see it build back to 1012 car lakes that's the way he was able to earlier in the race just gradually pick a little bit of distance on her heart really drive down 43 get a grant there but when he crawled up off that corner so your heart closed up going in the corner when he straight to the demonstration [Music] is greater in the 25 he's back in 11th position one lap down Sterling Marlin behaves like women getting around him Kyle Petty 42 he's in seventh and he still seems to be stumbling abit here yes fell back with it here we see the leaders get the Earnhardt close the gap is they enter the corner he's able to close down a little bit and in the 28 car front can bully just a straight away though difficult but ball up around again and seems to be the characteristic Burghardt get into corner hard here can close up a little bit of ground and what just 28 when he comes up this back straightaway and you know why Earnhardt is pressing so hard as we come toward halfway these fireboat of course what's the distance right here if they enter the third term try to close the day or going in these close that gap up going in the corner through the middle he's gonna lose the distance back down the straightaway is critical you'd like to lead left at that point spell just like Rusty Wallace is one to get up there begin at least every port so you can ripple that car right here till the 28th up a little bit of critical spot so you don't got close of us that little bit of lift up the throttle put it right on it Earnhardt to the inside desperately wanting all right many bonus points most laps and then give you live point lead anyone five points but only five coming down to the line they're side by side here's Earnhardt trying to get him I don't think he made it he was there at the first place keep in mind when what you've got it left so it's not forward at the start/finish line until the checkered flag the scoring the dirt off the turn forward at the line up until the last left he's got to lead back up this mess indeed good point and he's coming around this time if white as you come on floor until that last lap before in the matter of scoring done right there right there just as they went across scored staying down there except if you're making up a life you have to beg you let that score 3118 place that earnhardt has led this year out of the 26 previous we're in race number 27 maybe we need to get dick burger to somebody back in the 20s if that business come back for his run or picked up the face Earnhardt leaning for the first time this afternoon urban second this race with this many cars back they would swap car bow dine in the 85 and I let's see where the 85 is we need to check on 85 fix honorees come back out and then he laps down but he's running to only wanted falling out if either Wallace or Earnhardt and the problem here will make a major difference in the point that races to go [Music] men Phoenix Arizona and finally November 14th Atlanta Georgia there's less Dee Wallace who is running in fifth remember he is running in the lead lap Earnhardt serving Marc Marquez Jeff Gordon Lexie Wallace make up the pond5 what do you think when time comes Ernie Irvan another time I always wanted to be head of mints or something done business but she's coming back with better into John Hayes dr. Robert hey Kenny Clark still have to fight hesitation mermen plus the weather conditions make the cars are pushing the cloudiness and so I had to thank you from someone that might answer for the reason that we've seen people being able to stay with a 28 more so than the first to the races the first nobody could touch now take a look at the top five and the interval between them as they come around here urban going back in front and stretching to a 10 car length advantage Earnhardt stage in second now let's look back and see what the difference is 165 166 complete next time by the hand plays well there you see the interval from the leader Dale Earnhardt back to Rusty Wallace we'll have more from the mello Yello 500 in Charlotte after these messages [Music] [Music] [Music] at Charlotte Motor Speedway in the mellow yellow' 500 - watching Ernie Irvan battling with Dale Earnhardt and what a contest it is at the mid distance of this 500 mile 334 lap contest battle continues around the track and at this point it's a ford chevy contest rest the race is very stable for the moment Earnhardt came up gave Ervin a very good run now he settled back into second place earlier this week US air force reserve commanders performance award was given by Lieutenant Colonel Ron Hall together all racing fans is Lieutenant Colonel Ron Hall presenting another Air Force Reserve commanders performance ward but before I do I wish to say that because of budget respond to it I regret - this will be the Air Force Reserves last presentation from the depth of my heart I wish to thank Ken Squier and his staff and all you racing fans out there for what has been a tremendous seven years for me and 10 years for the Air Force Reserve now for today's event with me today to receive the commander's performance awarded mr. Jeff Gordon Jeff congratulations on your winning the pole for the mellow yellow' 500 Jeff does awarded very special for the Air Force Reserve because it recognizes individuals who have exceptional leadership and talent while participating in a team sport Jeff started racing at the age of five he's come up through the circuit into the Grand Nationals now he's in the Winston Cup Jeff the Air Force Reserve is excited about your future please accept this award on behalf of the Air Force Reserve I just like to thank you Air Force for their involvement in racing I think it's very sign I'm very and very proud to receive this award thank you good recipient Jeff Gordon running fourth at the present time set on the fold of 177 miles an hour 22 year old from Pittsburg Indiana he's just behind from the urban Dale Earnhardt and Mark mark pretty good company for hit from Indiana these days Hoosier now out of the Indiana originally California Lane there's Roger Penske Don Miller right to his right and Don Miller of course the man who was directly in charge of car number two Roger Penske overseeing that car I'm sure he's giving some instructions up there hey I tell you what that's just like Roger Penske he could have any feet of the house and he stand it up over the roof watches his racecar run well if the race ended right now with Earnhardt 2nd and Wallace back there Gail would gain 20 point quality 5th now we stretch that lead back to 92 points that word half this a long way to go in this one they say something's gotta give you can't have these many cars running this ye you feel now that would not seen the kind of attrition that we've seen before we've had one car in the wall no engine problems to speak of we've had this little rumor about that car number 28 out in front but they're not blowing them up today but that's a Ledge pole the 28th Ken these motors the last two or three years here you've been able to hold a car almost wide-open drive it so deep in the corner barely roll over from get back in it you were really abusing two motors in turn they feel stronger and better pieces for the cars this is actually easier on the motor you've got a motor distinct built into a tested and tested and built into one level competition and then you fact that spraying down others or they just old bulletproof than ever I don't know if we're gonna peel off Patricia now again if you're just joining us the minimum front air dam has been cut to three and a half inches up to five inches the rear spoiler that's a down from six point five basta what five seven and the minimum roof height is up an inch and that's what they've done to try to bring these cars back get them more in the drivers hands and they're having to lift a little earlier off those throttles and keys into them a little more gingerly into these corners and the big story here is it seems to be saving motors it's just not abusive there's like get off the slam the pebble report Lumos prevents with how they worked at drum here's Randy talk about the lack of attrition guys toggled on of course involved in that one car accident he did something speak when he asked us what happens tonight flat lofted he small in stature but it takes a big man to admit they lost the race off so that goes back to work now can you and here we're talking about now I can tell you has to right now - I simply bought the car no other related problems in that accident so uh I think if one car back there giving sorrow was here earlier as often shot bounces back out they're in Coke giving us these pictures satellite over 160 mile per hour average around the Charlotte Motor Speedway and the right to admitting well guess where we've been racing now for about two hours and we voted the convictions have really changed a lot here at the Charlotte Motor Speedway we've talked about that in the last few public Jackie Hays describing fourth what it does to a race car will fight double extra time very cloudy here we went over to the NASCAR trailer where they keep those very close watched on the weather conditions it's got very cloudy of plunders will get but they say there is no threat of rain there are no suckers Forbes of the area's cool off and it is darker now but there's nothing to worry about in terms of getting the rest of the race in so really it's a matter of crews having to adjust a slightly different atmospheric conditions more than worrying about rain today 25th position was coke running a couple of laps down with 180 to 334 now in the book 24 degree banking 1,500 foot straightaway named straightaway 1,300 feet in the backstretch and right here we appeal off of the turn number one considered the quickest part of the force Ernie Irvan continuing to dominate we will see the 25 car Ken Schrader fighting with Dale Jarrett that is a struggle for tenth position Dale Jarrett had a bad qualifying time trying to make up for it now closes in on Schrader struggle pretend another aerial camera view courtesy of Raybestos the Bespin brakes we'll be back with more the mellow yellow' 500 from charlotte on PBS following these messages Keystone beer presents a NASCAR profile today Kyle Petty Kyle is one of the most colorful drivers on the Winston Cup circuit on the track he's one of the flashiest drivers there is through the years he's evolved from a financially struggling driver into a contender with potential to win a Winston Cup championship nearly days were struggle free on Kyle Petty and try to struggle frequence mechanical failures crashes kept him out of Victory Lane here after father Richard left and he edifice team was financially on the ropes and the Wood Brothers came along and gave Kyle the opportunity to prove that he could win 1986 he drove to victory at Ridgewood he inherited the lead after Dale Earnhardt and Darrell Waltrip tangled with three laps to go [Music] Talton big leagues dr. victory came a year later at NASCAR's longest race the 600-mile ER in Charlotte soon after Kyle's winning talent caught the eye of businessman Felix de vidas 1989 Eyal took advanced design with the newly formed he told by sivadas turned out to be the right girl but as the years have gone by that team has evolved into a contender for the championship in 1993 stylists come on strong winning a Super Speedway event at Pocono running upfront consistency currently he's in the top ten at which these supporters Kyle Petty and sixth position here if this record cloud looks on at Charlotte Motor Speedway sold out weeks in advance they sprout out yesterday estimate was around 70,000 it's like you can double it today in field pack those grandstands mock everyone out to enjoy a great day of racing the indices in Rockingham coming up in there after Phoenix Arizona the Buddy guilds great facility in which they've done so much in improving and then Atlanta Georgia second week in November will decide the 1993 campaign Lincoln big announcement today going to put up a million dollar challenge in that last race if a driver can captured at 500 on November 14th from the pole position and win the Winston Cup championship down to a couple of guys the whole things in there worth in excess of 2.25 million dollars to Colin as it receives a million dollar challenge that is some announcement let me tell you what it can fall down to that is safety Wallace hop guys go to any federal poll to win the race worth over a million dollars to them you'll be seeing some guys trying to qualify the front them and nevermind a championship go for the race whole business of how you run that last race Ernie Irvan here today's let all but four laps think you could get close to that built a good built right you would drive or that he's not up in the points close enough for a crack at the championship you see the car number seven amble back through the field here of it and that is depo dime he's running eight piece at the present time again showing up in colors of his own team the late Alan Kulwicki little slide berry came out that's why he's back a little bit some of the guys are it isn't right they're not skipping list of hearts life we're marking second spot if we just amble back through the field and show you how they're running Earnhardt in second spot earlier than he stayed back through here first a seconds about what two and seven ten seconds and there you see Mike Martin he is third overall in the race my money first watch just a bit further back remember where it laughed 192 rather run more than 300 laps 334 to make the distance still a lot to happen [Music] Jim solder he was and he's running about 30 laps down but he's back out here so there's only one car that's officially retired who solder back on the track and comes Ricky Rudd he's driving the number five tied car in the eighth position a lap down David a good stout run up at the beginning of this race and tried to overtake there any urban then in those fifth stops got caught he's running from a lap down to present I'm looking further back there we've got Jeff Gordon in fourth place on hole having a very good day Bobby Labonte has been closing on him and that rookie battle Neal but right now romantically the other way probably the body's back in 31st the first fellow yellow 500 he's ever ran that a quarter ago it just trails like six seconds for the leader right now there you see lanky Wallace he is in fifth spot at patia your mullet a dull looking on as you can move a wait a bit here you're in that center part of the race where things have stabilized instead of riding out 100 last 50 miles take a look at the 52 car Mike Wallace out of st. Louis Jimmy means number to me means five back there in 3rd and 2nd position first time he greater than there were 500 also and in which the Jenny means we have some good things happening sir visit the best InDesign 42 Kyle Petty running in sixth position in the race while coming down by little Carl to Spokane that several laps down [Music] forty closing up in here Mark Martin coming after Bernhardt in the free second squad south we're not there Martin coming Avenue great performances let all the four laps today back to some of the great performances like fireball Roberts when he led all the way 250 miles Super Speedway race in California Newt the run is hampered way back in the early sixties and of course the David Pearson he led all the one lap 1973 at Rocky Horror Show he put we solve our corners trying to go and a while Broward the same kind of lap times as the leader before me a car boy get the back end he done days right up there with Earnhardt question is can you can get rather hard baby yoga Ford Chevy Ford first second third in the mellow yellow' 500 Charlotte North Carolina four races to go including today coming up on 200 laps complete in a couple of 334 to be run [Music] if going around some black cards to your heart workout right now at the front straightaway mark mark directly in behind you when you have to go around with these lap cars clearly before we get quarter makes a big difference Earnhardt was able to clear that car Mark Martin had to go around him and look at the gap over them just a little bit of not being able to use the bottom of that track does give about six positions Bobby Hamilton correlation I'm sorry lapped car on the inside Bobby Hamilton there Neal keeping it tucked down let him get through [Music] we'll take a commercial break right now and dirtier that continues to stop and storm to the field here this afternoon is Charlotte more of the action coming up shortly [Music] gentlemen take his right arm under the baby's left shoulder blade opposite army air and blow know what you probably watching hands right now and my news oh there's news every half hour close I wanted to let you see the Michael Angelo of the grill friend this is 73 year old game looter he's been around and say from day one he's five times all-pro bestest years in the world this is the man and everybody clear old pit road lot of guys James looter when he says drill press not that but all the beetles everything it takes to break the mark for that 28 car telling your van is quite machinist two hundred four laps are complete getting back into a pit stop there you hear my heart closing it again on Earnhardt of the number three at four seconds earlier than continues to dominate we'll check that interval between first and second slot for you another time four and three ten seconds clean first in this battle for second I took a take a look at this race story usually this goes about 15 minutes that all these lead changes all these cautions here's the race story today folks that's the framerate story okay well hello I'm glad up at the top of the show we were doing all the crashes of wrecks and all the causes of a heaviness pretty evident we didn't know a third thing about what we work on the foremost brand Neal they thought my gosh that the best deal from sliced bread because you know there's all those lead changes look what's happened here today he's had five lead changes among three drivers and only one caution on the day now the the records out here what lead changes forty-seven seventy-four we get 25 or 30 the least lead changes was eight in 91 and also back in 1960 so a lot of things can happen on the old record book today there's Earnhardt looking down Maxwell House car lobbies number 22 running back in 33rd position if you really want to emphasize League changes there was one pass on the racetrack so far the other wrist of Wisconsin self or pit pit and stuff written while repeating we're getting ready to pit once again all then green flag and those pit crews that's going to make the difference in this one instrumental all the way through this mellow yellow 500 this story has been told on pit road as much as on the track because Jeff Gordon L pit road just as we're talking about this the 24 cards it turned into pits sports place the Sun is pumped back out Spencer's coming in behind him also this turns out again it's going to change the complexion of his race Spencer seventh place on pit road - he carved upon farm okay looks like the lemming instinct they all come in here follow each other right on the pit road once the word was out the Gordon's in now you've got the 68 grape sacks pulling on the pit road 14 car the 1 to 44 honey Rick Wilson's in you can't afford to stay out there on the old tires when someone else they're doing there's so much quicker but they'll just pick it up seconds on you all the time will you come in some is everybody to Linda's game on Craig's axe running in 15th position there you see rick nash the number 1 he's writing in 17 a couple of laps down and here comes leader Irvin back on pit road for the Robert H team Johnny Hayes is there in the havilland Texaco pit area and let's watch this phenomenal pit crew go back to work by the key Ernie Irvan top run the 3 car just talked about sixth fifth behind if we got a both central pit road got hazed the size of the rear tire changer big foot hey these guys just do exclusive slams I know how important it is they also know how good at Dale Earnhardt him ok did Richard Childress into things every weekly between the 28th is that murders runs better on a long run they just put four tires on it they hope they don't get so many long run as we had so far this afternoon dick while you were saying that we was watching both pit stops seems as a word hard gasps peekaboo by the second on the stop was that nose on the racetrack Johnny hey Mark Martin just came in there cleaning the window everything's fine they just ran one extra lap the leader left to get the important points stopped going closer gagging away in the car daddy tell us any more about that part mark humans they come back out taking care of their car I think they have a real shot to win this thing they're the kind of people playing real smart close to this welcome closely let me tell you one of the things that Harry Gant comes in that I like about John Hayes the most he is the guy that was instrumental in citing an awards program for the guys from the pit row the best the best jack man the best tire man the best carrier those guys that no one ever talks about and got a money for it he gives them a banquet once a year you got some of the folks he's involved with and they vote upon themselves all the Bruce vote so it's a vote by your peers and it's a heck of a program and we get a lot about Johnny Hayes but seriously you talk about racing nothing happens and if Li Hayes put that program together and it probably is this meaningful as going to the Waldorf Astoria before the drivers that come December in that banquet this little banquet in Charlotte for these guys that there on the wall get dirty four days a week work seven days a week on these race cars to very special journey when they go there what kind of you service pick me like always oh yeah we take real good care of them give a pretty probe's letter bring their wife their mothers and probably one of the highest emotional events we ever do because it's great to see some of these big old rough crew guys cry and they do actually cry when they get that a rule he like to get everybody emotional he'll either work on you or he'll work on me but he loves to see people going home or supper without ring but the hope is cat sitter let me let everybody go 214 laughter now completed 334 at the Charlotte Motor Speedway it still Ernie Irvan out in front 10 Schrader is on pit road we'll be back with more of the action of the mellow yellow' 500 on CBS after this welcome back to the Charlotte Motor Speedway were just past halfway it has been an Ernie Irvan benefit show so far this afternoon we adjourn if he thinks the 28 car down the straightaway here at the Charlotte Motor Speedway from on high great to have you with us today on PBS's with a terrific afternoon so far for Ervin and a few other drivers one of the drivers we've been watching has been Jeff Gordon's got over 24 of course picked up his first pole position with Winston Cup three here this weekend and he did it with a slightly different motor Rick Hendrick the team owner asked at a bnr engine shop motor he put his car from qualifying normally the Hemi [Music] motor went in there is support to the pole they're racing though with a Hendrick Motorsports engine to the car today racing very well Jim posted and fourth position the last time we checked a short time ago also there is concern perhaps to the Rusty Wallace organization we had a call if you Muppets ago that what was might be losing there's something the way is fluid on the track who's ever it means that Ernie urban aesthetics Dale Dale Jarrett is on pit road they've got the hood up that is never a good sign on the eight feet cart that the air cleaner off of that automobiles motor deal about it it looks like they work easily would that happen in fact there were correct ignition system the air cleaner actually covers over the distributor and everything I don't know it looks like they might be taking the carburetor loose or maybe you've got a carburetor condition problem they say they are taking the carburetor is a soft nor drank dinner to stoke up the fuel as they take itself losses there's a few carburetor that was coming off that in fact he's waiting on arguing whatever gotten into a corner here well you're exactly right Neal this is not your first race is the carburetor linking the problem they're going to have to take it get it back out there I say what happens in a case like that that linkage already opened it up over too close so many times you just broke the linkage off the side the other carburetor here are Rusty Wallace in fifth place earlier in the events whenever rusty was able to hold off the leader and not going lap down it really worked out well for the fifth place right now in eternal morning 223 laps are complete [Music] we have seven cars in the lead lap Irving during heart Martin Gordon Rusty Wallace Kyle Petty and Jimmy Spencer oh seven cars in the lead lap averaging 156 miles an hour is about three miles over the record Ernie Irvan looking to win his first mellow yellow' 500 even people flicker [Music] 1988 winner Rusty Wallace maintaining 5th don't you know these guys are getting tired of looking at the variance because black and orange playing govern after two lap after lap he does keep queue in a way but you until he got the 48 rollin now there's bowtie Brotherhood money brought around him he just put the 8 car down everybody oh man I tell you the lap times that he's run in the race record 153 every speaker 156 I'd say they're getting it done today 26 he's rotting in 11th he shot is a lap down 29 cars falling back through the day and Hillenburg Hillenburg at the brain came down here and worked in the fast track racing school at Charlotte repairs on Jarrett one two minutes and 52 seconds so that discount him today severely Jarrett falling well back that very long stop Ernie Irvan it's been a fantastic display by the Robert Gates team they came up and with urban won their first race at Martinsville as part of the jolly amazing how they into a gel sometimes the chemistry works you know if that car has always been extremely fast Ernie fitted right into the car you must feel the presence of Davey Allison every moment out there anything well you know it did I remember any guns we've kind of put a bit of the pocket he just our D made it up you know everything we do it we always refer back to well when we look at the notes everything Davey said during a race or during practice a lot of those things are given up in something what we need to do that's why we provide a fairly dark teammate to weather and always love me [Music] 68 is on pit road the more the story on gray stacks go down see what's happening there and ignitions probably be working on this car behind pit row here is the real problem this is the rotor this thing is supposed to be attached here it's not they're going to move us behind the wall is how to get that distributing squared away or you talked about a shame that thing with Greg SEC 268 cards read the best one they've had I don't know when really running up front did a good job that piece truck they cost about a dollar 95 not the mileage rate take a wall between get the dollar 95 peace be using gets you right yes you know you don't sometimes you just don't find what it blows up and swing the rod and crackheads on available something like that break it's almost enough to say the wrong thing interval between first and second now stands with 77.7 esteem for the competition in Winston Cup racing has been the most dominating performance of any driver in 1900 he bobbles a little down there and gathers it back up for just above us the Havel and Texaco car got really loose and Ernie Irvan fix our exhaust leaving urban first Dale Earnhardt in second Mark Martin is third Jeff fort is fourth Rusty Wallace fifth Kyle Petty in six Jimmy Spencer is seventh a lap back right is eight straighter ninth and dill alley in his tent stay with us action more to come from Charlotte [Music] how about this for second place 235 laps complete Earnhardt again being pressured by Mike the number 65 times to the inside as they go down to turn one we mark down on the inside or heart outside marks got that prefer glam Peter it's a good road up off the corner rider who's clearly descent Mark Martin makes it 14-7 third and fourth Adi Atkins v Rusty Wallace second wise nine seconds back Ernie Irvan continuing to dominate I would say they've got the coral picked earlier [Music] well there's Martin leading Earnhardt they had a real war going early in the season Mark Martin took a lot of exception to Earnhardt he's in the press he they beat on each other a little like the old days and Allison Ted sort of helps things along they get out there and it looks like they really mean to close the in to think they're all so comfy and cozy and friendly not very friendly out there you know this port was grew out of those dirt tracks those short track racing a little few can hear a little fight man and I'm telling you I've heard people say boy need to clean the sport up hey let's don't get it too clean there's not rivalry either there's not animosity there's not a guy wants to beat another guy you see last week I'm telling you the sport doesn't need to get so clean and we come out here in the field like a person so they got monthly disqualified and we don't ever get to that end I mean in the old Andy a really Curtis Turner the only other way those guys they bounced and pushed moved each other around if I was on the board one of the default bodies are ready to water thing all you do here a little teen rebel when they hit you got sure we've talked about to go about perhaps a problem with the fluid leak gum bazooka Rusty Wallace is steaming along the fifth spot where a we checked it out there is no problem apparently another car was dropping well rusty got the brothels of oil on his windshield called the crew now they discovered it's not their car so they're not worried they're in good shape for the residence investing week what do you say we steam it alone taking their reserve [Music] 240 laps complete this time by 360 of the 500 miles will have been run as they come back to the stripe with Ernie Irvan in command seven cards in that lead lap Martin takes back over he's a few seconds down to the leader Ernie Irvan Earnhardt safesearch jordan stays fourth wallace v kyle petty six of Pontiacs back in 56 one in the county by rusty wallace who started 21st and by kyle petty who started 31st on the day and brought himself right up to the thick of the hot yeah we thought now was there in trouble early but he's coming back his cars getting better again look what the sun's out when it got cloudy he might have got too tight turns out Cal's worked his way back to the front again here's Johnny hey Dan Mark Martin is back outside is affecting the car well to begin with it was sunny and we tighten him up for it and then when the Sun went away it got too tight so we've been working her back and back out back up don't hurt us I just had heart he said the car did fine we're proudly maintaining a decent quit off earlier he's been driving out a supplicant to laugh all day right now we're even with us to learn pretty good shape I don't think it's not [Music] well we always for more gear than everybody else so we probably don't notice we've been sitting with Ernie in a three car about the same so we run about another 65 laps get the feelin stay with you I don't think it [Music] 2:42 complete from third spot number three ernhardt back to number 24 Jeff Gordon it's a difference of three and six ten seconds let's get more on the story in part 24 well can they talk Jeff Gordon radio six now from earlier today and he is beginning of an absolute earful about the car he says it's loose loose loose if you have to go he radioed to the crew instead I just about lost it during three and for Rick Hendrick they've been adjusting the car all day you can eat up Ernie Irvan that's a pretty tall order you got forever today but you know when the truck was in we were pretty close now son back out we need to tighten him up think we can hold our own with anybody but the 28 - 28 seems to be kind of a class by himself races on earned heart inside Martin outside factor Earnhardt again find himself a second place the closes right up behind Sterling Marlin sin partner work 8 to 13 as they wheel into the first turn of the 24 degree banking of the famous eyelet Motor Speedway if you're just joining us it's Ernie Irvan day in Charlotte North Carolina he's led everything here this afternoon in to stay here to win it that's what will stay around and find out of that a second advantage over Earnhardt in second Martin in third Nellie yellow 500 coming up on 250 laps 375 miles in Ernie Irvan in front Dale Earnhardt second to mello Yello 500 Mark Martin sustaining third Jeff Gordon is fourth rounding out the top five is Leslie walk [Music] welcome to Western auto car number 17 he's brought his 20th position today taking a very high life he was the prospect to really have a good day in these conditions but something's initially using that old Harry Gant flying way up on the outside you can't get the car to stick like you want to look once you go down and turn through here you'll see going you can see in some the lead cars able to run up in the bottom here once where Darrell goes right up top that fit a little groove rudder in the top the racetrack real close to turn four coming off right up on the wall now get up when you get up there you get scared you get that close to the wall to get your attention but I'm just certain what happens you got a loose car you have to run the bar higher paint identity to get blue food but there was one of them because bodybuilders [Music] you have a whole lot of little thing [Music] from where people buy into thoughtless turn dragger back live and what kind of won't get that much about the corns they're like you were straight into manifesto male testicle but don't look at the what you look for you look at anything else section three interesting sight before see reflected up there in the top here's dick Berggren on with putty paradox out of his pit box upper part of the ones are supposed to run today you guys are looking pretty good can you adjust this thing to pick up some more spots still what I really don't know you know the thing the thing is yeah we're four five five three four five six off Pole and we've got this thing down two by two and a half three pence and we're going to make some adjustments on the last pit stop we're real fortunate on that one caution to stay in the lead lap and we like to get them inside point bonus deal but you know no we're going to work hard at it you guys have an excellent pit stop Rusty's driving smart race you know we come out here top-five finish gonna be real happy to hear that every single element of the team was mentioned in that little sound bite can't overlook that crew chief I really like buddies here I think he is a good guy he gets down to basics is nothing to fancy about that stuff and sometimes remember when Roger Penske brought those cars down two years ago and he cried so hard he just didn't have any success they insert that leading-edge technology you get buddy Perry as it has the law you know Wallis to be in he hasn't had as many DNS as Earnhardt he had to be in a vacant big time I mean that awful crash that he had at Talladega the problems that they call those really difficult as they left him way back in the month before you put to get the car back out position [Music] welcome back to the Charlotte Motor Speedway less than 80 laps to go run lap 258 just after dosa the Bella yellow 500 really excited about our schedule here on CBS for the 1994 Winston Cup season we'll be back in Charlotte for two dates said Richmond for two days and that's the Pocono that's July hope you'll join us for the action one of the cars is heads of mechanical observed in many twists afternoon the number 20 Vaz dick Moroso car being driven today by Bobby Hamilton Athena honorable deal if that plug wire problems let me show you this this is one of the plug wires on the number 20 car we just took this distributor cap and wire harness off the car it was burned off they've replaced it Bobby Hamilton now back in the hunt I need to do all these cars because in particular photos of hood wire leads right against the stainless steel hitters in the Cookson looking at derrike cope as his car is being pushed in Cale Yarborough bojangles car being rolled back into the garage area we've had a good run but it's not going to stay up running the 25th when it ended and take a look at this here's Martin and earn half squaring off again Earnhardt on the outside Martin Dixon down on the inside and taking second place you will as if Ernie Irvan wasn't in a race of his own we got a heck of a race board right here and three guys back and board the back afford the only problem we got the 28 car oh we got one car run up against Tyrone exactly who it is but this too right here we're watching here is a little ther comes ernhardt again right back on the inside rich bickle scraped the wall going down the back straightaway but there's no caution coming on an iron arm is backed up there in a second spot thank you very much 260 laps complete together for 300 side if you've completed q61 so that gets us to 390 one and a half miles down let me straighten out one thing at it backwards didn't mean to but Earnhardt and OB BDNF quality that life the interesting thing is that in the top five you get down to comedy top five finishes each has had well then you have Wallace having 14 top five entities ernhardt I wonder was having 16 top-five finishes and Earnhardt having only 14 so there's more being credited to Rusty Wallace as top five finishes but it watches have been the severe part those marvel crashes of the year yeah let me take just like right here if you fall out this race with a big 14 car bill you're in trouble you go to a short track where they start 31 or 32 cars if you fall out first you still got a quick you're timid with heart you follow all the way big boy levitator 44 just squared it up he bounced it off the wall who's the 40 kids going under Rusty Wallace that's for 55 rusty right back well that was him I just looked up third course Oh Rick whistles willing they over wall that's the second car that's gotten right out there and flattened out the right side rich bickle did the moment ago on the 45 40 the same for one incident to turn to but neither has brought out a caution pretty solid hit Council the concrete plow turn for Waldo Rick Wilson is there hosting the back straightaway in the middle of turn three I didn't think he could make it very far did I mean when I saw him he was bouncing over that wall I've got to battle between Pontiacs back here in fit spot Rusty Wallace and Kyle Petty as another Pontiac looks like it's going to call it a day coming in very slowly Rick Wilton will get a shot a rewrite batter a little earlier in this car or you'll see some damage for that thing see the it squared the door up concrete inside those rims and that apron has not so room to right brother he couldn't work at him badly scuffed number 44 at lap 266 holds on pit road now we're expecting what lat 275 to 280 when do you think we gonna see 28 in here well let me tell you what they told us while ago that the 48 car was going to pit on lap 272 between their 275 really so what do you think so far they fitted before or after we'll just have to see when he comes in but they're talking 272 - 275 Kyle Petty and v Rusty Wallace and six question as to when day will fit will be resolved when we return at lap two seventy four hundred five miles completed in the mellah Yolo 500 34th annual actual dose Carolina it has been all Ernie Irvan in this Havilland Texaco car about to put a lap on pit Musgrave in the US air machine as he comes down the main straightaway the 28 leads by 12 seconds over second place Dale Earnhardt with Mark Martin right behind him in third spot will show you that interval between your leader the 28th and the battle that continues in it's a dandy between cars six and three there they are back together another time in turn one up on the 24 degree banking Martin takes the position back they swapped this thing eight times in the last 20 laps because of the 28 car only 1/8 card he told us left in 72 is left 371 so there's right on schedule dick durbin waiting car 28 he comes down to the club here's Musel stock fired over inside the window now apartment parking go on one more tank of school let's go live yeah I think anything on the card okay the air practice understandable the thing they like the car the weight is well Dinah's on pit road as is Wallace was luckily loosen him up a little bit coming down pit road Martin and Earnhardt [Music] 24 Jeff Gordon right behind him Kyle Petty coming in the five Ricky Rudd one guy comes in he opens the floodgates lack of fear [Music] Barnard hit pit road ppff these guys are will in on the right rear marketing my partners are volcanic at the same time they're not happy with their car they've got too much like me take a moment ago excellent pitstop on browse Bernard's away Morgan Shepherd coming we haven't given him much of a call today Oregon is running 15 positions being shown his pre laps down the Wood Brothers number 20 picking up after that pit stop there's Harry Gant it gave it such a great one in the early going but the 33 is backed up he's in 13th position two laps back ganden the green and white colleague 82 was when it all began for him the light here driving how the invert Reynolds card 8 years sat on the pole and won the race last man to do so it's difficult here we go Hal Needham I saw him before the race he's dinner filled in another bandit movie is there to work it before the race started take a look at 2 and 24 getting together out here at the back in pit spot it's Wallace for the moment in front of Jeff Gordon as they struggled for fifth position where these points are so critical Wallace and Eric are again that our own probably put a lap on Jeremy Mayfield who's diving's very first Winston Cup race here today number 95 the white car is John there he did a good job staying out of the way 275 laps are complete 334 are the distance if you're just joining us it's been all Ernie Irvan there have been nine lead changes of unfor drivers and those lead changes for the most part are taking place under caution or rather under a pit road conditions there's only been one caution on the entire day a high above Charlotte our aerials are being provided by Raybestos the best and brakes were one of the best racetrack for [Music] promotional fees in consideration have been paid by Raybestos the best in brakes and by Western Auto the official auto parts of service store of NASCAR [Music] to 80 on the board 334 the distance so we're closing in on the finish and it's been Ernie Irvan all day this was supposed to be the showdown at Charlotte it has in the show up earth and like he hasn't shown up some time absolutely decimated a field of 42 spark has made everybody else battle for second place in the classic is autism [Music] we days 7 to 12 seconds he'll be just riding in here Ted letting it run is usually where it feels comfortable and dominated and as Neil Bonnett pointed out a little earlier this business that NASCAR came in here and did not use a restrictor plate but came in here instead and changed the aerodynamics on the car raised the car higher raised the air dam up put it back in the driver's hand and one of the outstanding results has been the lack of engine failure here we are in the final moments of the race we have what two officials of higher seventy-five cracks at home against young hot but I'd smack the wall out of turn number four and then the 98 went away with an engine failure the 29 is also parked actively before the 1939 cars are still running in the Neil Bonnett the question is hey isn't this what to what it's all about to make these cars run to have a lot of cars racing it seems like a pretty good idea they came up with well it seems like a pretty good idea but I'm wondering what humpy wheeler theta t to be a Rick pass or a runaway it's a rifle run away is this the situation where somebody hit they drive away went together to make sure that the weather I don't know what we're gonna do right here doesn't have to weigh it out after the race but the but the restrictor plate so many people didn't like that idea putting that decline I think they were looking arable right here between the sixth car you know the six and Earnhardt were directly to get the time to hook up before they went in for the fence and now the six is ready let's look back if you were an art set how critical is getting in and out of pit road see the six there's Earnhardt coming off the second turn down the back straightaway big gap in the did stop and you saw Owen Elliot the 11 car he's in 10th spot a lap down wondered about that window we heard dick Berggren say can they go go rest play who wondered that far they went or Ernie Irvan earlier they were big 50 laps 62 laps if you think they don't kind of close for that last stop we've got 62 laps to go so they can go home well they've done it all day long so they feel comfortable that I'm sure I know what you're saying about making the races close but this is really a driver of race out here today and Ernie Irvan has definitely hit on the setup he's hit on the combination a lot of guys don't look at that one real solid you know if I could answer that with the proper answer I think two things over to NASCAR said they'd hire me tomorrow the key is how do you slow down how do you stabilize them and how you keep the competition real close take a while for everybody on top of it if everybody had that answer or they could be a hero every weakness is hard to do but don't you think they could come up with it yet lava gate says and he's a brilliant guy built great engines over the years and he and Larry McReynolds certainly have a chemistry with us to work that suspension to get it right but don't you feel that maybe then I don't mean to be leading the question here but to a degree I am this seems to me to be a better way in those restrictor-plate we haven't got the power when you need it you've got to wait and ramp up the rubberband to make the thing go a little faster yeah there's they're necessary but of the best operation [Music] they walked in with three bucks before they would have put the place must be put the place though and that would have wrong so much possible what will happen is one with laughs away from Sue knighting at 435 files in the book earlier that final rites in history [Music] averaging 157 miles an hour the old record 153 five sets by Mark Martin when he won this race a year ago Ernie Irvan continues to lead with 292 of 334 laps in the book we have seven cars in the lead lap Irvin Mark Martin earnhardt kyle petty fourth Rusty Wallace fifth Jeff 46 and Jimmy Spencer in seventh position let's get an update on some of the other action here at Charlotte on this great racing weekend from the STP sit Center here's a racing update oh thank you kid yesterday we were here for the 300 miles green Angela the old boy All Pro Auto Parts 300 dominant as Ernie Irvan has been here today that so dominant Mark Martin was in yesterday's action here's how the field took the green flag workers taking an early lead off the green from Bobby gutter who was the pole sitter yesterday and the field down the banks right away now back to the first lemon they are firing very long to play the lead in yesterday's event he started gradually first big incident Ward Burton and Randy Lajoie get together early in the going Burton hits Lajoie Lajoie spin little later on is Johnny Benson jr. down into the water barrier at the head of the pit road during that caution NASCAR told Mark Martin he had to hold up they gave him a stop until pedaling because he had made a pit stop while pit road was closed that did this way Park the bit he raced back to the lead going by - I'm in the latter portion of the race Dale Earnhardt is the 3 car in Bodine 4:34 gets together they put on 20 show what I got Bayern art but Earnhardt was able to come back at low tide and reclaim second spot later - going mark Barton though all the way for the victory and a great triumph over mechanical problems had to go to the back and come to the front once yesterday asked to do Mark Martin winning his sick for a national event of the season yes a lot of us might double as he has done several times if you're winning a bush berry Saturday whisky Cup show Sunday today it doesn't seem to be working out that way not quite Rick Benjamin he's giving it his all he's in second place but its second by 12 seconds to this man and he's blowing away once again Ernie Irvan well it's a long wait thing and we'll just have to see what happens [Music] well all the crews down here have been watching this great big diamond vision screen behind it and as they were watching a replay of yesterday's action rajendra was just talking it out and they saw the car spin it around everybody went nuts on Kent Road they thought they were going to have a parking fly you think they might possibly hope for one I bet how you wake up and you're ridiculous free fall for caution spots may be debris you about recoil fear debris is going to be out here we're at lap 296 right now folks zeroing in on 300 laps and we'll be back shortly with a mellow yellow' 500 on TBS ernie irvan's race to win Mark Martin trying to take it away coming around a complete right now 300 laps 450 miles final 50 underway and there you see the old record beam shattered it was established just a year ago by Mark Martin and now Ernie Irvan looks like he's going to break it wide open with the fastest mellow yellow' 500 run in the course of the 34 years we had this event in October Dale Jarrett goes another lap down in conference [Music] here back in 26th position a good one early pullback then it's gone the other way for Dale Jarrett and company here when they their carburetor probably almost 14 seconds now between first and second and humpy wheeler called it right it was either going to be registered or somebody was going to do a lot over here and that's what's happening with Ernie Irvan right now as he seeks his ninth career win and his third in 1993 you know a lot of times the leader has to really work tactic you see come up with genic but he's running too fast as far as traffic didn't see the vision he cuts to him he gets run so quick there's not even a proper important enough talk about some good race cars he's dealing with this is his fifth stock for Ernie Irvan in this race and prior to his best performance was a year ago when he came home in six that was when Mark Martin wanted let's go down to the 28 here through Robert Yates dick Berggren down there well Robert new rules a new deal how did you pull the right strings to make this a rental well okay I don't really know what Larry and Ernie and all the guys work on the car ninjas they just busted their butt to make semiarid be known so everything I'm sure these other guys theaters oh we must have just had it all fall in the right place we still got burning on the left to go hallo we're tilted over don't know what to call it over the checkered flag going to be the thing I'm sure bet they keep running they're going to be something spectacular to really live I check the cars out of the race we're showing four we talked about the Bodine car that was Todd Bodine that was the only car that has crashed the 98 car that's gone away derrike cope the 29 car which is Hillenburg that too is gone away we're now getting a report on a couple of others the 85 has called it a day remember Jim solder had trouble early went out about 30 laps they've gone back behind the wall we have note the Ballad away and also we see that rich Bickle of Edgerton Wisconsin the bullseye Ford they've also hung up the goggles so it stays urban first marking second Earnhardt Bert and Ernie Irvan plays this like a fly caster he just drops that 28th out of the will and reels it back pretty much what he wants most of the distance here and once again you believe that fish story Robert Yates was telling about gosh they have no idea what made this thing one like this well I'll tell you what you can hit it visually you make major changes I mean it Robert Gates and Larry McReynolds do the Chancellor you got a lot going on your direction Stockton coming out yellow is on the track caution is out at lap 306 you missed by six laps on it that will cost you a quarter lap 306 yellow coming down I can't see 4y till you were right it might have been fear debris car number 20 Jesus on the pit road second caution of the day they've been averaging 150 7.6 on Ernie Irvan this is going to square them up for a run for the finish his peers brothers over backstretch ah list it is all on the back Briggs oil away yes oh they're going to see if they can get him slows down here and put the old dry up and we'll put seven cards back together they've done this a couple of one other time and Ernie Irvan just said see you later here's darrell waltrip in the western ottokar there's much fun for Darrell's mind himself up in the morning I always go into the 19th place No a few weeks back really got his car going it just a little off today let's go down to Johnny Hayes great story Neal if I was interviewing Ernie Irvan before the race I said listen I'm gonna take you to win a race just like if you dress cool off you're gonna make me hero D but man don't pick me don't eat us and everybody on the crew said hey don't pick us soon as they said that I knew they had something for everybody what they're doing now is just listening hoping this thing will hold together because if it'll hold together they've won this thing how the power of Hayes he's going to be unbearable first he picked Wallace Richmond now he says after the fact pretty well along stay tuned folks pit road is where the action has been we're seeing the cars a lap down now on pit road all seven of the leaders you're watching live as those cars down a lap all come in moments ago the front seven came and that's where the real story is let's take a look and replay Neil Bonnett to what went on up there getting shot so far Clark was on the 28 car what you look brighter is the demand with our fans around the way he boosted the car that disturbed again with Luca that far up learning together look at Northpark look like about two rounds on the right rear good indicator for me real close [Music] quick stop by posing about 18 seconds Rusty Wallace came out so they're all back here again with seven cards of showing eight in the lead lap now the blood is picked up with this pit stop and has gone back into that lead life be about that in a moment for sure there's still seven count them down for you to moment as they come around to complete lap 3/10 that will be 465 miles to have another lap before they turn them loose the Charlotte promoter is a man who likes to take as few chances as possible he likes to hedge his bets AJ wheeler in his unending quest to thrill the fans he ensures against a dull day in many ways not the least of which the famous comfy world pre-race program now here's the cultural climax of this year's edition the vehicle you are going to be watching here is what else of gar garbage garbage and I guess that set a record for garbage trucks burglars Gerald the jump in history right there folks we didn't walk into the home without seen look again at this magnificent moment so for your garbage club ban something for you today yes you fans at home do not have to do the stunt your garbage collected get down or anywhere only other control conditions like have a good time to turn ready to go racing again 300 Kanaka that is part of hockey world [Music] taking a look at the Charlotte Motor Speedway where Ernie Irvan bunched up with Mark Martin Dale Earnhardt Rusty Wallace Kyle Petty Jeff Gordon Jimmy Spencer and they're showing Rudd now one lap down they had him up there for a moment getting saddle to go down they come see and I've got the feeling that garbage jump it just meant more laughs I don't know something about the replay just did break a moment out I wonder what it was you know of all the honors Neil the Dale on earth that Dale Earnhardt has received one of his finest reviews was handed out this week right down the street from the Charlotte Motor Speedway it was a big time celebration for a small town hero this past Tuesday was Dale Earnhardt day in Kannapolis North Carolina thousands of Dale Earnhardt fans paid tribute to their hero as in country music stars whoops and dumb but of course the loudest cheering was reserved for Dale the man who is known as the Intimidator admitted to having butterflies in front of his home folks as he was presented the key to the city [Music] later that evening a celebrity dinner was held as war stories were traded and accolades handed out Neal Dale Earnhardt pity we didn't gain anything they did change tires you look very relaxed Krulak relax all they did is came tire stagger say the car was pushing a little bit tight he might have something fun I see what he got some for me better show it to the 28-foot and he'll be gone the ductus Earnhardt in third - second version Wallace back of court files any fifth Gordon six Spencer seven odd the break they go back over the green at lap 312 334 the ultimate range here today back straightaway Martin closing in couple of boards up in Flour heart gently trying to stick with him right Black Card Justin's life our toolbox coming out of pool here comes Wallace in the potty act like that they do it down the inside on the right is that glisters daughter but yet payable but also he's right there with her horses that Latino the wire with a points 30 laps to go this time by back straightaway Martin trying to close urban trying to draw away by about two two-and-a-half filing and Martin coming into the corner close is out again and iron are close huh [Music] things like we're able to stay with that 28 car car park parking able to stay right there until they make long runs and that's when it's wouldn't eat really cooked alive in the Mark Martin pitches dick Berggren Dean if you've got anything for that 28 Ernie Irvan I don't know he's been awful good all day well worried about the three getting by us he can run better on short spurts than we can we hear the tires up a little bit got 20 to go and Mark and usually do a good job at that now we're trying for the 28th but based on what we've seen all day he's gonna help us out well tell him to step up on the wall and take a pretty good look ernhardt tucked right in behind the six the two of them trying to draw down on track 28 defending mellow yellow' 500 champion bloody collision Kyle Petty last fall Mark Martin was he in on Ernie Irvan I think we've been going away all day long we finally got a race board right here little state brings over a board to trust to get a hold of this 316 laps complete this time the side of the urban try to draw away and the three working in tandem where the six closing that distance line up again it's going to take two of the passive my boy if they'd hook both of those videos together if they go under 28 down Mark Martin fourth and Winston Cup points look at this 24 gets keep down the inside that's Jeff Gordon forfeit Kyle Petty Falls to 6 Kyle coming right back and here comes Jimmy Spencer Spencer rolling out in the black and yellow card you just caught is that Spencer at number 12 escape relief one falling for Bobby Allison and Jimmy Spencer rim riding from seven o'clock going back for six on the outside of Kyle Petty I also thank you I think mr. fault Hargitay cent left back get it back earlier today they in off court right now this was the ranger Psychic expensive rifle body out and you're going hit a great finish in this event [Music] terrific run here he is right back in it again perpetrator on the outside again but to work that High Line attract mates back building inside [Music] look at Harry Gant back there and welcome at number 33 himself a lap down but still giving a good accounting out there yeah I was talking with will land Dale Earnhardt's tire changer and I think you have anything for Matt all he's good man I don't know I didn't think we had to stand to the winds with her heart wanted he gets up in the spot like that he smelled the blood he'd love to do anything don't count him out last couple of laps so we'll separate from bird second to third [Music] marks day to the food through the sticks car mark mark pull up off the corner we heard Steve Miller say earlier day we pull a lower here with those people would I don't get good mileage with a hit with a pilot there's six cars jumping on a consistent performance by Ernie Irvan but Mark Martin is just driving the wheels off that number six it's when a gear comes in handy when the blow here is just brimming yup yells corner to what's on here bark barks didn't move again where he's been a of the closes when gets in a throttle up off of this corner look at the 28th hey that thing goes needle in the loop he loves us he's got brute horsepower mark successful look darlington back in September at Watkins Glen on the road course honest it makes you can August in Bristol mark Barton those border all the Rusty Wallace stop him cold for exact aerial platform we saw if you round the bike the 6 car in and around outlet 48 when they do that they're saying driver hey you're going to have to think it's up to you now they're having to drive Barnard looks like it's going to be there the toilet or game consists of the changes 483 miles are now complete into the final bubbles 322 laps are up on the board in the infield 334 we'll call it a day Ernie Irvan finalists were stellar yellow 500 the man who wanted last year Arkansas's prime comes back another time off turn 4 still to a NASCAR last that boys like the season picks it up off the 34 is also look at the want to support it was able to get it all back up here in brilliant oh so this is like these point up a little bit better for effect right here the Corgi run away little bit the other into six comes back here comes mark another time Mark Martin here which they coined the phrase in 93 when you're hot you're hot [Music] without winning with a car good not to win a long time without losing and look like we ever lose another race it is one of those things it's business competitive and it's really hard you know sometimes you run good enough to win and you don't sometimes you did so run good enough you know so it's the tough business and I can get tougher 3:24 complete ten laps to go look right here the 50 large things right Blackheart just in front of those leaders Jeremy a lot of offering we are cannot be overrun by these guys they come down in the corner urban places very nice aliveness fair in another thing to look at it should finish just the way they are right now it ties the manufacturers points before the tangible value vector means a lot less to our party place maintaining fit his Gorton Eva stay with us leave we get down to the final hope urban Spain up on top look see Angela's crazy just the last left to think that overcast it went from sunshine to overcast here is just the last lap earthy let's see what happens here I mean excuse me can i plug yes critical on this track that so now seems to help further got himself about four five car lengths Earnhardt pulled right up behind Mike Martin give him a little bit of an assist he'd like to get up there and see if he can get them to shuffle decide this race maybe Mark played as part of runs he could have been some really abused estar right decision you might be going away a little bit break that a little further back yours Kyle Petty getting around Jimmy Spencer and Spencer driving his heart out back on the inside center and Kyle petting in it's gone six o'clock later right there traders running in ninth couple laps down hard marked sideways up to three four or got others sideways again picks it back up back to the strike Mark Martin literally driving the wheels off that car if the wind-down turn three heart pull right up behind him it look like it took the air off the back of the six he got completely sideways up to the middle of the corner and then he lost it again coming off four cars getting back into what wall was closing up in fourth position take a look again on the last lap Tina go down accordingly the three foot of distance in between them but the three car took the air off the spoiler six mark did a good job what here's sideways he straightened to that again that's what these short spoilers are do don't hesitate if you just get close we're back with you alive that was at 175 miles an hour Martin making that incredible collection who saw in slow motion imagine what it was like for him here they come battling for second Martin on the inside Bernard on the outside and moving up here comes Rusty Wallace in the Pontiac Rusty Wallace is critical in these points leader Clarke Wallace but here look how loose Marcus's cars really lives he's so lose they're dynamically he can't hold it Cindy Stotler good even the rear right-hander and I realizes that Wallace is there he's trying to work marking over and keep in front of Rusty Wallace and Wallace is giving it everything he's got there's no while Ernie Ernie Irvan pulls away see that's what I don't say well this is Doyle he's checked out with the families for second third and fourth 3:30 complete final thought that comes Wallace on the inside 72 points separate them in the battle back in the early tempers laid on 300 points every sunflower mark is going to take it a lock over then wallace began his drive as the laps one down in the final moments your wallets giving her the cry her and I pulled up bullying graph for a moment let me say what he already knows the three Clark knows if he gets right behind the six he can make him lose but they're going outside that should hold already six even looser with parks able account loose hose up slides all over the racetrack Martin left-handed pinch it down they're earning their money now this is what's about the devil he left to go back in splat mother a score of hundred seventy five eighty miles an hour we've got to keep the plugs out in flight by about three seconds in eternity urban he's going to take this thing home but the story is up in second spot where you see Mark Martin here comes Earnhardt another time and right behind him the man that's right behind him in the points battle white flight this time by Rusty Wallace about eight car lengths back anything left final lap on his way to his ninth career victory his third of 93 but the story a dramatic one is unfolding back in second spot Mark Martin holding on Earnhardt desperate worth a million dollar bonus if he can win the championship and his lead has been eroded dramatically into those final corners now here they come for the finish here two winner his flight back is earthen and in second spot is Mark Martin third will go to car number three Earnhardt [Music] Rusty Wallace great report colonel I leave the Winston Cup standings buy into points over Wallis first time Dale is finished ahead of Wallace's lon except we're on the workforce there you see Larry McReynolds what a great gentleman he is and what a job he's done a kid that came out of a Alabama junkyard loves racing cars is helped develop at 28 into the great winning car that it is so we'll meet Ernie Irvan in the Bowlin Mark Martin comes home second Earnhardt third Wallace board Jeff Gordon fifth Jamie Spencer six Kyle Petty was seven [Music]
