[Music] next from cbs sports the national football league you are looking live inside the warm cozy kingdome in seattle where the seahawks who have won three in a row host the red-hot washington redskins and joe gibbs squad will miss the playoffs for the second straight time since their trip to the super bowl two years ago but their performance today could have a major impact in determining who does make it into postseason play now one of the bright spots for gibbs has been the late season development of quarterback mark griffin he has led the skins to four victories in a row now ripon seattle counterpart dave craig he also is a red-hot quarterback right now and he'd like a big game to close out the regular season on an upbeat note [Music] another reason dave craig and the seahawks want to have a big game today is because this will be the 200th and final regular season game for steve larger i visited with nfl's all-time leading receiver this week and i'll tell you why sometimes nice guys finish first seattle coach chuck knox is a nice guy too and last season the seahawks finished first in the afc west this year though his team has been up and down and we'll talk with him about the future over at the middle lands joe walton coached his last game for the jets today now new general manager dick steinberg will look for his replacement i'll tell you about the leading contenders all that and more coming up on the nfl today irv you know i don't think any of us have given enough credit to steve largent it's almost like we've taken him for granted throughout his 14-year career but what an exceptional athlete is though brett you know for all his records and certain enshrinement in the hall of fame what struck me most about larsen is this philosophy that it's better to give than to receive that's fitting for a person who's always known what he wants he weighed ten pounds and four ounces and they said here's your football player each time they'd bring him in to me and uh of course no i had no idea steve would always go with the halfbacks nobody have to turn around and send him with the wide receivers and i found out sometime later that he almost quit football his mother told me because he couldn't get to play halfback he's the epitome of work determination perseverance doesn't care who gets the credit he's an unselfish football player wants to win steve largent will be playing his final game here at the king dome but when he came here 14 years ago as a little-known wide receiver no one would have guessed he'd become the most accomplished pass catcher in the history of the national football league and even though this end zone says seahawks here in seattle it will always be known as largest domain this great career almost didn't happen drafted by houston largent didn't make the orders at that point in time a lot of my self-worth self-esteem was built upon they're based upon my ability as a football player and so to have someone say you're not good enough it was really a crushing blow to me steve was traded to seattle for an eight round draft choice and what became one of the biggest deals since the selling of manhattan in the years since he's amassed more receptions yards and touchdowns than any receiver in history but he's never lost sight of his most cherished prizes his wife terry and their family she knew me back when you know i was a curly haired pimple face little kid in in high school that was nobody you know so when she tells me uh you know could you change the kids diaper or take the trash out you know it brings you back to earth in a hurry the largest youngest son kramer was born with spina bifida a rare spinal defect strong faith and a positive outlook has enabled the largest to overcome their difficulties and enrich their capacity to help others in need ready [Music] two weeks ago steve broke don hudson's 44 year old career touchdown mark there it is touchdown seahawks number 100. typically largely gave his record-breaking game jersey to seahawk radio announcer pete gross who was recovering from cancer thanks thanks so much i think steve's christian walk and christian attitude this is what i think people are going to remember and this is what i've always said i'm proud of that even a lot more than i am all of the statistics that have been piled up when i describe a guy that is a class football player it's a guy that has a great a lot of ability but has a real sense of humility about himself and an awareness that of exactly who he is and how you know he fixed into the bigger picture i really have no regrets about my my career at all it's it's all been terrific it's been like a dream to me [Music] really an unbelievable athlete you know when he was injured earlier this year he had a bad right arm and couldn't couldn't practice because he was in the reserve so what he did was take the team's practice schedule and go out on the field by himself and simulate the entire practice well that's that's why he's so great you know a lot of times scouts look at figures and sizes of people but there's one thing that people don't have they don't have a zipper on their chest to see how big a heart he has here's a guy 511 and he runs all over the place catches it in crowds and you can see after this piece the guy's got a great heart what's he going to do he's invited the fans to a post-game party he's going to sign autographs then he's going to donate all the proceeds to the homeless in the seattle area that's right he's going to do that tonight i imagine staying around after such a celebration to do that yeah he's a remarkable athlete headed next for the hall of fame too and we're going to continue live on cbs in just a moment the seattle seahawks do not share that same heroic past but from a franchise of just 13 years comes one of tomorrow's great legends [Music] because today steve largent will catch his last pass and leave a legacy intact one that was built more on desire than just talent alone cincinnati 10 yard line best penetration great back to pass a little pump big now look there it is number 100. and it was vince lombardi who said the harder you work the harder it is to [Music] [Applause] [Music] surrender [Music] two teams with a solid foundation the washington redskins and the seattle seahawks conclude the season with a battle under the dome the kingdom before a capacity crowd this afternoon on cbs good afternoon again everyone i'm dick stockton along with dan fouts always a question of what the incentives would be in a game when both teams are out of playoff contention with the bills winning seattle has been eliminated but with the winning streaks buffalo uh winning today of course seattle has won three in a row and the redskins have won four straight and chuck knox when we talked to him yesterday had a santa's sack worth of incentives today dan well what those three victories have done for chuck knox in this ball club is it's given their pride back but chuck knox wants more number two if the seahawks win today they will prevent themselves from having a losing season for the first time ever under chuck knox and but the big thing today of course is to send number 80 steve largent into his retirement with a win now as far as the redskins go they were five and six at one point this year and joe gibbs was giving serious thought as to whether he'd want to continue his head coach but the team's won four in a row they've done it with a youth movement that has been uh just rejuvenating for joe gibbs well it really has and joe gibbs has gone back to his old ways long hard practices and he's found out that these young guys are anxious willing and able to practice that long but the biggest asset for joe gibbs right now in this four game winning streak is his quarterback mark griffin is playing to all pro level just a few moments ago steve largent concluding a brilliant 14-year career came out and was introduced for his final game steve legend largen told us yesterday he didn't know if he was going to become emotional or not but dan he just couldn't hold the tears back he had a number of former teammates with him his family was on the field his mother his wife and children and the people here in seattle identify so closely with steve largent and what he's meant not only to the football team but this fine community here in the northwest the washington redskins will be kicking off and seattle has won the toss they'll receive chip low miller will kick for the redskins david hollis and elroy harris are deep harris is on the left for the seattle seahawks redskins missing the playoffs for the second year in a row and it's elroy harris with a return and he is written out of bounds just beyond the 20-yard line [Applause] curt govea makes the tackle dave craig large instead played perhaps the best game of his career in the win over the raiders last week will have this offensive group with him rookie from notre dame andy heck edwin bailey grant feazel brian millard and mike wilson the line travis mcneill the tight end warner and john l williams the backs brian blades and steve largent are the wide receivers first and ten from the 20-yard line craig going right dropped ryan blades he's going to the pro bowl drop the pass and that'll bring up second down defensively for the redskins charles mann also going to the pro bowl the only to do so rookie tracy rocker daryl grant and fred stokes the defensive line monty coleman starts for raven caldwell neil okowitz and wilbur marshall the other linebackers martin mayhew and aj johnson are the cornerbacks in their first year and clarence vaughn and todd bowles are the safeties [Applause] largen is in the slot second down and 10 goes in motion [Applause] penalty marker down carrying the ball is john l williams and we'll hear from the colorful ben dreith with the first penalty of the game no doubt we will hear it's against the redskins the left side of their line jumped off side good hard count by the quarterback david craig defense is offside number 71. they're going to take the penalty at second down charles mann it'll be second down and five terrific defensive effort in the last several weeks for the redskins yet man is the only representative to make the pro bowl it's been a long time since the redskins had as little as one well and they have the number two rated offense in the entire league and not one player will be in hawaii in the pro bowl complete to kurt warner there's another penalty marker down as warner is tackled at the 28-yard line by monty coleman and this time it'll go against the seahawks holding against them i think we've seen the type of game though that we might uh number 54 hands to the face as a 10-yard penalty and it's second down that's the center grant feasel chuck knox told us yesterday that for his ball club to beat these redskins they're gonna have to put it up often throw the ball quite a bit today and and that's not a normal type of thing for chuck knox type of offense but what he's been able to do is establish a running game through the air by throwing a lot of passes to his fullback john l williams the running game just hasn't been there for the seahawks and joe gibbs redskins have stopped the run pretty well four wide receivers on second down and 15.2 hey break get some pressure to pass up the middle to williams breaking to the outside john williams stopped by aj johnson and a gain of 24 yards this is a perfect call against the redskins but watch how they're all coming on the blitz here coming trying to get pressure on the quarterback the line lets them through craig sucks them in and just dumps the ball over the middle and now john l williams has three offensive line out in front and then uses his ability to get to the outside and pick up a big first down a versatile performer one of the best receivers of running backs around the league and a first down at the 40 for seattle here's kurt warner and fred stokes meets him in the backfield and a loss on the play he'll lose about two yards fred stokes is number 60 working against rookie andy heck number 66 and edwin bailey but uh lets him go inside and uh kurt warner is surprised by the big fella for a loss stokes was one of those plan b unprotected free agent pickups from the la rams and has worked himself into the starting role previously held by dexter manly loss of two second and twelve craig in rhythm completes the williams and the running back is brought down by clarence vaughn the strong safety short by about six or so yards for first down it'll bring up third you get the feeling watching this game and every time craig goes back to pass is he going to be throwing it to large and that's all these people want to see quite frankly that's what i want to see played with stephen a couple of pro bowls and believe me what an outstanding individual but a real pleasure to be with and to play with i i envy dave craig and jim's orange largem said he'd like to catch a couple of td passes for 100 yards total today third down and seven no flag is down craig is down and a penalty is parker is thrown way back inside the 30-yard line andy heck recovered the fumble but there was a penalty marker down and tremendous pressure by charles mann and company on craig number 66 on the offense hands to the face they decline a penalty that's fourth down that's andy heck the rookie left tackle it's fourth down and they'll kick one thing the redskins want to do early is put pressure on dave craig here you see the safeties coming right up the middle todd bowles working with cavea and then on the outside there's just no place for craig to go as charles mann knocks that ball loose fortunate for the seahawks that heck saw it on the ground and got on top of it ruben rodriguez will punt for the seahawks ricky sanders goes back deep and a fine kick by rodriguez sanders at the 24. can't get away fine coverage by the seahawks and david wyman makes the stop a 45-yard punt and the redskins will take over again when we return the first quarter and it's a homecoming for redskins quarterback mark ripon who played high school football in spokane and started washington state first time in his five-year career he's back here and coming off a a big game against atlanta fine come from behind victory and he has been the engineer of the redskins four-game winning streak had to buy 50 tickets that he described were in the nosebleed country here the dome his family can write their names on the ceiling it's a high ceiling ernest feiner on the carry on first down from the 31 picks up about three yards tackled by joe nash the offensive line for the redskins jim lachey is the left tackle rowley mckenzie the left guard jeff bostic the center russ grimm is starting in place of rookie mark schlereth who's hurt ed simmons the right tackle and don warren a tight end byner starts at running back art monk ricky sanders and gary clark all bear watching today second and six and rufus porter big pass rushing specialist in the game for seattle and the handoff is to binder gets close to the 40 short of a first down by a couple of yards defensively for the seahawks not a big front line of jacob green joe nash and jeff bryant porter a fine speed rusher the linebackers are tony woods and ml johnson outside darren como and david wyman inside in the secondary dwayne harper and patrick hunter of the cornerbacks and sb glasgow and eugene robinson in the safety third down and two for the redskins on the 39. ripon's first pass is caught by gary clark into seahawk territory in a first down a pickup of 14 yards and it's melvin jenkins making the stop for seattle this is what a quarterback's looking at watch ripon as he sets one man in motion he's got his eyes on gary clark the whole way perfect rhythm there offensive line keeps the seahawks away from him and gary clark has another first down 70 catches over a thousand yards and eight touchdowns on the delay here's miner liner gets good yardage gets five yards david wyman the tackle for seattle you mentioned the size of the seahawk defensive line and they are grossly outweighed by the front line of the redskins their offensive line the big hogs up front and they have a number of different packages where they can bring in a couple of tight ends and go with the heavy set and really have an advantage when they try to run the ball second down and five on the 42 rippon's pass is caught by miner close to first down yardage byner had to get to the 36 and a half ml johnson another linebacker makes the tackle on binder the hogs can pass block as well especially number 79 jim lachey he's had an outstanding year feels he should have been at that pro bowl working against jeff bryant there but lachey has not allowed a sack all year long and has only been called for one holding penalty binder of course acquired from the cleveland browns one of the more versatile backs as a receiver and a runner is starting with gerald reeks still not 100 on the sidelines with an injured arch third and one three tight ends for the redskins and on their heavy set offense byner finds room for the first down eugene robinson makes the tackle in a pickup of nearly five yards to the 32 this is redskins football just power running behind the right side here here's donnie warren and ed simmons watch how riggs leads byner up into this hole and then byner just runs a b line straight ahead gets the first down and then some weiner has gained 19 yards on four carries first down on the seattle 32 einer gets the call again but not that time and joe nash brings him down talking to chuck knox yesterday he said that joe nash is having his best year interesting thing around this time of year after the pro bowl selections come out coaches really don't want to say that their guys should have been there because they don't want to hurt anybody else's feelings on the opponent opponents teams but also on his own ball club a lot of players feel that they have career years every now and then especially in this game today [Applause] second down and eight on the seattle 30. [Music] griffin's pass is caught gary clark with his second reception of the game and a gain of 12. so another first down for the redskins mixing their plays well well how do you stop all these weapons they've shown an ability to run the ball on the ground but gary clark now has two receptions i asked rod perry the secondary coach of the seahawks when you prepare for the washington redskins what are your priorities he said well it's really more like a crap shoot you just got to guess with them where they're going to go what type of personnel they're going to use gerald riggs replaces miners so he's in the backfield now on first and 10 on the 18th and once again it's clark and getting there just a bit late is patrick hunter but the short drops and the quick rhythm passing pattern by mark griffin has brought the redskins into scoring position just outside the 10-yard line an indication of how strong ripon's arm is that ball was deflected at the line of scrimmage by jeff bryant and still had enough to get all the way out to the receiver strong young man big two four for four thus far gerald riggs with his first carry gets inside the 10-yard line and maybe close to another first down nesbi glasgow and eugene robinson from the seattle secondary makes the stop on rigs riggs has a bad arch and it's just a matter of time before he re-injures it especially on astro turf the exact footing here and traction is very hard on the injury that he has so look for him to carry the ball early and often today redskins with the decision start of the year with rigs at running back more of a power back minor more of a combination running back joe gibson saw those 800 yards he says riggs has been in and out of the lineup and yet he's close to having a thousand yards 11th play of the drive upcoming first and feiner is stopped by tony woods loss of about three yards that time tony woods is number 57. and he comes from the back side that's a slow developing play the counter gap for the redskins and woods obviously unblocked on the play second and goal at the 11 and six defensive backs are in there for the seahawks ripping with plenty of time trying to get the ball to ricky sanders just beyond his reach melvin jenkins one of those nickel defenders in the secondary for the seahawks made to stop and that'll bring up third and goal we're in the first quarter 3 44 remaining seattle had their chance on with the ball first and now the redskins with a drive of their own this is where it really gets to be a guessing game between coordinators tom catlin the seahawks defensive coordinator is one of the best at trying to confuse quarterbacks with personnel and with defensive stunts lane number 13 coming up it was intended for sanders and eugene robinson breaks it up and that'll be fourth now ripon gets back in good shape on this play the offensive line does a nice job but he just doesn't lead the receiver quite far enough sanders over the middle and here's robinson with the perfect timing with the right hand to knock it away and prevent the touchdown 29 yard field goal by chip low miller and the kick is good and the redskins with a successful drive [Applause] lee chuck knox and the seattle seahawks 3-0 with 3 36 remaining in the first quarter redskins lead the seattle seahawks three to nothing in the first quarter on a very smart drive by the redskins using up nearly seven and a half minutes capped by chip low miller's 29-yard field goal you know they did everything they wanted to do on that drive they brought in the three tight ends with their heavy set they went with the posse they got the ball to biner and riggs so the redskins are hitting on all cylinders elroy harris fields the ball at the two yard line for the seahawks he gets up ended and coughs up the ball fumbled and it's recovered by the redskins [Applause] reggie branch who was just activated this week one of the best special teams players on the redskins squad makes a big fumble recovery and washington will have the ball at the 20. well if you were to ask reggie branch what he wants for christmas he'd probably say well i'd like to be activated for the last game and maybe if you could throw in a fumble recovery that'd be just perfect gavaya knocks it out with his left hand and the ball is on the ground and the redskins are in super shape now the redskins want to get to 10 and six that would be a nice christmas present in a year that which they don't go to the playoffs the seahawks three to nothing trying to take advantage of a seattle turnover washington ball first and 10 on the seattle 20. three tight ends ernest feiner and ricky sanders the running back on the reverse the wide receiver and it'll be a first down inside the 10. a gain of just beyond 10 11 yards robinson making the tackle for seattle good play selection here but watch how this man here ml johnson he also has help from a corner on the outside will stay at home after the reverse this is your responsibility on the outside there as johnson 52 comes up he gets help from patrick hunter on the outside and keeps that out of the end zone first and 10 at the 10-yard line byner up the middle gets inside the five and is tackled at the two yard line and the redskins poised to go in for another score jeff bryant and tony woods make the stop on byner this is one of the fears of chuck knox as we talked to him yesterday he said if the redskins get ahead of you early they will bring in their heavy personnel the extra tight ends and they will just pound the ball at you down after down after down right now the redskins are in a pounding move they have warren orr mike tyson jimmy johnson in reality four tight ends finer going to get in for the touchdown ernest miner with his sixth touchdown on the ground here in the redskins jump in front of the seahawks nine to nothing they had four tight ends in the game the fourth one is terry orr number 87. he's the lead blocker on this play and he takes care of darren como right in the hole that uh gives a perfect clear lane for byner to get in the end zone low miller has been perfect in his conversion attempts this year ralph boscienko will hold but movement in the line jailbreak there didn't it all came across i got to believe it maybe the center flinched just a little bit there dave harbor false start on number 67 in the offense that's a five yard penalty so it'll be a longer extra point attempt by low miller ray brown there's ernest byner scoring the touchdown a two-yard run now in essence this will be a 24-yard attempt for the extra point [Applause] [Music] high snap but low miller's kick is good despite the penalty the kick is good and the redskins lead it 10 to nothing well one of the things that the redskins wanted to do is to quiet the crowd and so far they've done exactly that sellout crowd of 65 000 at the kingdome in seattle has seen the visiting redskins jump in front 10 to nothing the scoring drive three plays in 20 yards as the redskins took advantage of a seahawk fumble now chip lowmiller kicking off again and elroy harris will doubt it in the end zone for a touch back he had fumbled the last time so the seahawks will go on offense for the second time you know chuck knox is not happy with the way things have gone had a difficult year to say the least he's not used to having losing records in fact uh his seattle seahawks since 1983 along with the san francisco 49ers and the denver broncos are the only teams in the entire league that have not had a losing record he wins today he's 8-8 first and 10 on the 20-yard line [Applause] williams he had kurt warner blocking in front and picks up a couple of yards neil okowitz the middle linebacker making the stop for okowitz by the way this is his final game he was saluted at the rfk stadium in the redskins finale against san diego a couple of weeks ago but for ulkowitz this is his final game following an 11-year career in which they were kind of replacing him almost every year and survived survival of the fittest neil okowitz second down in seven breaks pass to williams out of the backfield appears to have a first down let's see where they spot it maybe just shy of the 30. martin mayhew the cornerback making the tackle and they'll be just short of first down well you talked about oklwik and we've talked about largent today has been this being their last game well i got news for about six or seven other players on both sides of this field this is their last game too they just don't know it okowitz an 11-year veteran fought his way back into the starting lineup this season it'll be third down in one two tight ends for the seahawks breaks a tackle and gets a first down for seattle to the 39-yard line a gain of 10 yards aj johnson and alvin walton brought him down this is really a trademark run for kurt warner watch the power cut here as he sees the hole and then squares his shoulders and there's no way the redskins are going to stop him that was a huge hole over the left side behind andy heck kurt warner has taken a lot of punishment in his career and his numbers have gone down as the years have gone on we will not get another play-off before the clock runs out in the first quarter [Applause] and that is the end of the first quarter here at the kingdome with the redskins leading the seahawks 10 to nothing as the number one receiver in nfl history steve largent of the seattle seahawks has faced many challenges but none were as tough as when he and his wife terry were told that their fourth child kramer was born with spina bifida it was one of the lowest points in in my life uh you know i was crushed really just a uh huddled mass in the corner of the room sobbing my eyes out we've been very fortunate in our circumstances in that we have the resources and the faith to pull us through a tough situation like this but there are lots of people that aren't able to do that and that's where the support from united way comes in lots of families that need united way to help them through a situation like this for us kramer is like all our children already he dreams of being a cowboy the hopes and dreams of many children and their parents are counting on the united way that's why your support of united way is so important united way it brings out the best in all of us this message furnished by the national football league cbs sports coverage of the national football league is sponsored by coors enjoy the original taste of gore's the rocky mountain legend prudential bait security's rock solid market-wise and by today's truck chevrolet nobody's winning like the heartbeat of america dick stockton and dan fouts back at the kingdome as we start the second quarter the redskins over the seahawks 10 to nothing seattle though will start on their 39-yard line with a first down dave craig who in the last three weeks has completed 63 of his pass it's been a terrifically accurate passage [Applause] and aj johnson won't let him get away so brian blades with a 14-yard gain now needs six to match largent's all-time seattle record it appeared that craig hurt his hip but this is a fine throw after a fake he lets this ball go about a good second before blades is even out of his cut ball on the way look at the room that aj johnson gives ben or brian blades but here's the reason that craig was holding his hip as he gets a shoulder from daryl grant right on his right hip kelly stopper is the backup quarterback first and ten on the 45 of the redskins john l williams close to the 40-yard line gain of about five clarence vaughn the strong safety in there for the skins that's rod perry the defensive back coach and he's trying to figure out how to stop the redskins air posse because they have been just unstoppable all year long fine defensive back with los angeles rams i know i threw them a couple interceptions i'm sure you didn't chase them very far though not my job second down and five at the 40-yard line pass batted down at the line [Applause] fred stokes came in put some good pressure but it was tracy rocker the rookie from auburn who got a hand on the ball and that will bring up third now and this is the first time that craig has even looked steve largent's way largent was single covered on the outside but that's a beautiful move by tracy rocker getting that left hand up snuffed that ball right away change in the seattle offensive line edwin bailey has a knee injury the left guard has been replaced by derrick brills a former [Applause] four wide receivers on third down and five breaks pass off first time they've gone to him all day martin mayhew was covering him well on however and that'll bring up fourth down and rodriguez will come in and kick well stop the presses we won't see this uh very often in fact we won't see it much anymore after today steve largent open in the middle ball's thrown just a little bit high but that's right on the money and i'm sure that steve would be the first to admit he should have hung on to that one and greg may be the second fourth down and rodriguez will kick and going back deep for the redskins ricky sanders fair catch goes into the end zone rodriguez very nearly kept it in play a 40-yard kick so the redskins with a 10-nothing lead get the chance to go on offense again when we return total yards redskins with an edge and they took advantage of a seattle fumble craig four for seven for 52 yards thus far 10 to nothing the redskins lead the seahawks early here in the second quarter and dan so far the seahawks have not been able to stop the redskins you have any idea how they might be able to do it well right now the redskins offensive line is in total control given ripon time to throw and the running backs places to run the seahawks have got to do something up front to get pressure on the quarterback and also plug some of these holes along the line of scrimmage a few moments ago edwin bailey left the game we told you with a knee injury headed for the dressing room first and ten gerald riggs in the backfield for the redskins starting from their 20. [Applause] master makes the catch and hit hard by patrick hunter out of bounds but monk doing his job picking up nearly seven yards that time and you have the feeling that art monk has his sights set on a lot of steve largent's records right now he's 159 receptions behind largent and uh at only 32 years of age wouldn't surprise me at all if he continues to average 65 catches a year as he's done the last 10 years that he doesn't pass large in the next three second down and three on the 27. on the draw riggs and the seahawks are there david wyman in particular well argent getting the honors today going out and art monk still has some good years of football left and trying to catch up to largest records both the same type of receiver too the possession type of receiver art monk though has more speed and uh the amazing thing about both of them is how hard they work and how dedicated they are to to the position of receiver a lot of pride four wide receivers with finer now the running back third and three ripon's pass is caught close to first down yardage by sanders and they may need a measurement but it looks from here as if the redskins have it david hollis a nickelback makes the stop yeah sanders went right to the 30-yard line knowing that that's all he needed and he went to the 30-yard line and the 4-inch spot and got it sanders in motion on the hook on the option route here watch as he reads the coverage gets to that 30-yard line stops expects the ball and then hangs on i don't know another team with an array of three wide receivers like the redskins have three of the top six pass catchers are in the nfc are redskins gerald reeks going off left tackle he's got room and riggs dives forward close to midfield patrick hunter finally makes the play but riggs picks up 20 yards on that run just vintage football as they put a lot of big people on the line of scrimmage grimm with a nice kick out block ed simmons comes across this is their trademark counter gap play you won't see it run any better than that right there gerald rakes who had a chance to play against his former team the atlanta falcons a week ago terry orr and mike tyse are two tight ends in there on first and ten [Applause] and on the reverse it's going to be a flea flicker with ricky sanders throwing to art monk and he's got it inside the 20. 32-yard gain that time eugene robinson who is covering monk makes the tackle on the play and a flea flicker puts the redskins in threatening position again these are the type of plays you run on the last day of the year watch art monk as he goes down here and just kind of lollygags and then gets open in the corner remember the redskins ran a reverse earlier in this game exact type type same type of action here look at ricky sanders on the run and i'm sure he's kicking himself now that he didn't set his feet and let that ball fire because he might have had a touchdown pass another catch for art monk gerald riggs is going to be stopped for a loss by tony woods [Applause] also four yards that's twice now that tony woods has run a play down from behind one of the bigger linebackers for the seahawks is there not a big physical defensive football team but what they are and chuck knox's terms he they like to put the old rydell right under the chin that's a brand of helmet and every lineman sees it when he looks across that scrimmage line of scrimmage second down and 14. ripon on a out hits gary clark at the 10-yard line short of a first down by a yard melvin jenkins on the stop 12-yard pickup that time well if this is a crap shoot for the seahawks defensive backs right now they've just about crapped out they can't figure out how to stop these fellas uh clark this is his fourth catch monk has got a couple sanders a couple for first down and the offensive line continues to dominate up front 149 yards for the redskins only 56 for the seahawks third down and two byner the running back gets the call and he's not going to get it stop for no gain by david wyman that'll bring up fourth down and chip low miller will come in and the redskins will attempt a field goal low miller has already connected on a 29-yard attempt this will be from 27 yards ralph moscienko the punter will hold kick is good so last week low miller missed three out of four field goal attempts against the falcons but so far today he's two for two and the redskins now lead it by a score of 13 to nothing [Applause] the seahawk bench trailing 13 to nothing with 7 25 remaining the scoring drive nine plays 70 yards the field goal added the points but the fleet flicker of 32 yards from ricky sanders to art monk set it up jim blomer will kick off low miller elroy harris is on the left david hollis is on the right line drive kick harris fields it and takes it out close to the 25 25-yard line we'll celebrate christmas weekend on cbs sports tomorrow an nfl double header starting at 12 30 eastern with the nfl plays of the year and they ought to be something the highs and the lows followed by game one phoenix and philadelphia the eagles need a win to nail down a wild card green bay in dallas the packers still hoping that they can win the division if minnesota loses rams in new england rams hoping to be a wild card detroit in atlanta detroit trying for five in a row and then the second game chicago and san francisco 49ers the tune-up before the playoffs first and ten at the 25-yard line john l williams crosses the 25 tracy rocker is there to make the tackle so far the seahawks offense is having as much difficulty moving the ball as their defenses having stopping the the redskins but knox says that they're not getting enough big plays on offense and if they're going to have any chance of winning today they have to make big plays the problem is they really don't have the speed at wide receiver to make a lot of big plays and right now they're not even attempting it and they haven't run the ball well really at all this year second down and eight craig is going for it he's there and he makes the catch 21 yards to steve large in his first catch of the game mayhew and vaughan made the play steve largent working against mayhew on the corner route watch the patience here the deliberate move to get free leaving the much faster mayhew and then at the very end the trademark toes down leaning out of bounds and another reception does that graphically indicate the kind of receiver largent was that is as good as it gets right there first down on the seahawk 48. craig in trouble and he'll be sacked for the second time monty coleman and a loss of eight yards back to the seahawks 40. monty coleman working against the tight end here let's see if anybody tries to pick him up not a soul as he has a free run at the quarterback and craig does the wise thing just to get on down to that turf monte coleman starting in place of raven caldwell so in all of the youth movement for the redskins in the last month coleman the veteran back in there as a starter as is russ grimm on the offensive line a couple of classy individuals you just mentioned there four wide receivers second down and 18. penalty marker down craig's pass intended for paul scanzi incomplete [Applause] defense was offside that's a five yard penalty and that's second down and you know dave craig knew that the redskins were offside so he's going to throw this ball regardless of what the defense is doing because there's a chance he may come up with a big play and that's what craig has done better than anything else in his career is improvise after the protection breaks down he'll run around scramble a little bit back there wing the ball out their sidearm and make some significant gains it is still second and long second and 13. here comes todd bowles on a safety blitz craig gets it away and he'll complete the pass to jeff chadwick the former detroit lion not enough for the first down but it gets them close to it a gain of 12 yards [Applause] bulls was coming free on the blitz but the fullback john l williams picks him up and this leaves single coverage outside chadwick going against brian davis there and craig really put the ball in a nice spot for the reception third down in what three tight ends are in there for the seahawks pitches to john l williams he's hemmed in and he won't get there the redskins pursued nicely it was daryl grant with help from clarence vaughn the strong safety vaughn was the first man to get to it now what vaughn did is he forced john l williams after he breaks the block of kurt warner right there he forces williams back inside where the big fella daryl grant number 77 is waiting for him fans don't like this decision here you are last day of the season come on coach let's go for it what do we got to lose ricky sanders goes back ruben rodriguez will kick it away but if you know chuck knox he's a pretty vanilla kind of coach it's worked for him claire catch called for at the 10-yard line by sanders so rodriguez got off of beauty [Applause] [Music] seattle goes on defense well normally this is one of the loudest crowds if not the loudest in the nfl not so in this first half and this is when the crowd wants to get involved when the opponent has the ball and they're also backed up in their own end but the crowd this year has not had a lot to cheer for the three and four record the worst under chuck knox here at home and he said that the crowd really hasn't been that much of a factor this year because the team hasn't been that effective just winning ball games three tight ends for the redskins on first and ten ernest miner [Applause] gets some room out to the 17-yard line james jefferson on the tackle and the offensive line doing a good job of giving the running back some room the key really though is that the crowd has been taken out of the game by the redskins offense they've been effective they've moved the ball and they've scored and as an opponent opposing quarterback playing here very difficult to call your signals i've played here many times and woken up the next day with laryngitis this is a tough job to have lavender drivers stop short of first down by nesby glasgow the strong safety it'll be third down and short the redskins have had the ball three times so far in this first half and scored all three occasions but if there is a silver lining to this uh rather dark dome it's the fact that the seahawks have kept the redskins out of the end zone those three possessions could easily have been added up to 21 points instead of 13. third down and two rufus porter is number 97. for the seahawks to the right pressure on ripon and the pass is caught by gary clark in the middle of two defenders good for 14 yards melvin jenkins and eugene robinson and clark is really off to a terrific first half with five catches and you just feel the confidence building in mark ripon he threw that ball with all arm as he was back in the pocket really never set his feet to deliver the fastball but he is so strong and so big at six four and about 240 pounds that can you really zip it first down redskins on their 32-yard line [Applause] caught this time by byner out of the backfield david wyman on the stop and we're getting down to the two-minute warning so far it's been a clinic by the offense and their defense hasn't been that bad either just the way joe gibbs would have liked it two-minute warning here in a 13-0 game two minutes to go in the first half from the kingdome in seattle dick stockton and dan fouts with the redskins leading 13 to nothing trying to finish at 10 and six with five wins in a row seattle trying to avoid a losing season for the first time under chuck knox and of course the final game for steve largent what's next for steve largent obviously the hall of fame the hall of fame is not every player's goal it's every retired player's here's goal reverse fake and ripon gets it out to beiner weiner winning his way close to midfield has a first down for the redskins darren cuomo makes the stop and it looks like all the bag of tricks in the arsenal of joe gibbs is being used in this one this is really where it's fun you're playing a game that is not as meaningful as as you would have liked obviously ripon said last night that he wants to play it loose and have some fun believe me completing seven of your first 10 is a way to have fun especially with 50 members family and friends [Music] [Applause] pass up the middle incomplete don warren the tight end was the intended receiver as the seahawk defense gave ripon something to think about david wyman was defending downfield [Applause] eugene robinson has a safety he has to deal with the crowd noise as well when the other team has the ball and the crowd's trying to make noise to disrupt the quarterback well robinson has a lot of calls he has to make so he has to revert to hand signals he'll point out the strength and then when it's real loud he'll just go with the hand signals to his cornerbacks second down and 10. [Applause] pass thrown behind clark incomplete minute and 13 seconds remain in the first half both teams have the full complement of three timeouts remaining this guy has really made a nice comeback the last couple of games having been benched had a lot of trouble hanging onto the ball in the pocket a number of fumbles but he hasn't quit and he's led the redskins to a very impressive first half third down and ten rolls out and completes it gary clark with another reception his sixth of the game inside the 40. that'll be good enough for a first down melvin jenkins on the stop and the redskins will use up their first timeout with 104 remaining in the first half [Applause] chuck knox says it's because they've dropped a lot of balls but it's also the fact they're playing awfully loose and ten at the 39 of seattle [Applause] griffin's pass to sanders he's got it at the 15. 24 yards that time and jenkins with eugene robinson making the stop and the posse going to town in the first half on the seahawks rippon's playing catch with his receivers and then the defensive backs are playing catch with them after they kept grab the ball they just catch them and tackle them on the hurry up offense ernest miner gets inside the 10 yard line and now the redskins will use their second timeout but they're poised to get some points again 13 to nothing washington fans have used their second timeout they'll have a second and two at the seven yard line remember they started from their own 10. this is their second real impressive drive of this hand [Applause] griffin has the pass batted down anyone's ball and it's intercepted i think by robinson i believe eugene robinson made the interception he did and the seahawks stop the drive griffin's going to come out on the rollout here and he's looking for art monk all the way cu gets a hand on it joe nash number 72 now look how high this ball is up in the air robinson with the momentum of running after monk out leaps monk in the end zone for the interception what a job by nash that ball hit him right between the eyes that's why it went so high hit his helmet so the seahawks get a rare interception you were just talking about how few they have eugene robinson leads the club with five and nash who's used to blocking kicks gets a piece of a pass there first down on the 20 for the seahawks with 29 seconds remaining in the first half drake's pass is caught by lewis clark and seattle will quickly use up one of their timeouts they've got two left lewis clark what a an appropriate name for a guy playing here in the northwestern asked him yesterday hoping that his middle name was something like norman or something but he said no it's stephen i said well change it so we can call you lewis in clark he'll get a lot of ink and a lot of publicity if he does i think he keeps catching the ball like that he's coming on as a receiver only one touchdown in this game and that came after a fumble by the seahawks ernest binder with a two yard run jib lowmiller has two field goals as seattle trying to hang in this game stopping a impressive drive by the redskins with that interception want to remind you coming up at halftime brendan irv in our new york studios we'll have a lot to chew over as we get set to conclude the 16th final weekend of the regular season tomorrow second down and one [Applause] four wide receivers for the seahawks breaks in and out of the hands of clark now there are 20 seconds remaining difficult for the seahawks to drive the length of this field in a short amount of time because they don't have the personnel at wide receiver that can stretch a defense they're more of a possession type of passing offense where they got to throw a lot of short passes brian blades is really the only burner on that ball club third down and one blades to the bottom of your picture here's williams out of the backfield seahawks fullback has enough for the first down 14 seconds remain martin mayhew pushed him out of bounds seahawks need about 35 yards to get norm johnson uh within a 50-yard field goal and the bad thing is they probably only have two tries at it [Music] there's johnson who kicked three last week in the victory over the raiders first down on the 33 but the clock is the important factor here [Applause] goes out of bounds with five seconds to go gets to midfield [Applause] john l williams had a career-high 12 catches last week against the raiders well he came into the game as the leading receiver for running backs tied with tom rathman he's giving rathman something to shoot for tomorrow look at the strength and gets to the outside he knows he has help from a wide receiver wide receivers all to the right maybe one hail mary attempt left [Music] craig gives it a try and largent had the ball bounce off of him after a deflected offer a group of receivers and defenders almost would have been a perfect finish to the first half that ball went directly to steve largent and he just couldn't handle the carom it was just too hard with the karim but that is the end of the first half here in the kingdom with the score the redskins 13 the seahawks nothing steve one pass in the first half of a 13 to nothing game in which the redskins lead the seahawks [Applause] there have been two turnovers one for each side and the redskins capitalized on one of them as you look at the statistics seattle unable to run and it's time of possession everything in favor of washington thus far and you wonder about that 17 yards rushing and how much chuck knox likes to depend on his ground chuck offense well today it looks a little bit more like hamburger helper norm johnson will kick off aj johnson is the man in the middle for the redskins herb welch and reggie dupard flank him waiting for the kickoff seattle seahawks out of the playoffs for the first time in three years nine and seven last year they win today they'll finish eight and eight but they're trailing and johnson getting set to start the second half norm kicking to aj aj johnson on the goal line gets hit hard loses the ball is a fumble at the 25. david hollis makes the tackle but the redskins recover the fumble [Applause] number 97 is rufus porter he's going to the pro bowl for his second year in a row makes that significant is that he's just a second year guy seahawks have been able to develop special teams players remember fred young went to a couple of pro bowls running under kicks and now it's rufus porter redskins start from their 25. donny warren a tight end is wide to the left [Applause] ripping on first down going to warren and he is out of bounds close to first down yardage patrick hunter making the tackle [Applause] donnie warren away from his customary tight end position working outside against a strong safety nesby glasgow actually that's patrick hunter the cornerback and again a seattle defensive back giving way too much room playing it too cautiously i mean donnie warren's not going to run about running away or by anybody let alone a fast corner like patrick hunter they're going to measure it warren has caught 14 passes for many years and during the redskins heyday when they were winning those super bowls it'd be rare when don warren caught a pass but when you talk about the hogs in the offensive line don warren at tight end was a key factor in their running game he's been called the best blocking tight end in football and his value to the football team joe gibbs says we can't run our customary offenses different sets without donny warren he's probably our most valuable player [Applause] first down [Music] [Applause] gerald reeks is the setback completes it to sanders he may be close to the sticks once more at the 45-yard line darren cuomo makes the stop it's so difficult to figure out what type of defense you want to play against the redskins because if you play them in man-to-man the three outside receivers have the ability to beat you that way but they also have a lot of options in their pass routes that time ricky sanders just hooked up again in the zone and joe gibbs is having a field day calling plays and ripons executing them they're going to measure this this one as well 80 catches now for ricky sanders and it's another first down so you want to talk about getting to the sticks redskins have done it on two plays on their own 45. griffin's pass fought again by art monk they're really spreading it out and this will be a first down they won't have to measure this one patrick hunter on the stop gain of 11. and the chess game goes on that time the seahawks came with a lot of pressure up the middle but look what happens outside here you have art monk working against patrick hunter single covered hunter thinking monk's going to go deep monk right at that 10 yard mark and the redskins are going 10 10 10 right on down the field there's a guy who doesn't want any publicity likes to keep a low profile when he broke charlie taylor's record he just quietly left the stadium griffin going deep clark nearly made a sensational catch was covered down field by patrick hunter not a bad time for a shot like that well they're they're just uh have the seahawks so totally confused but there's no receiver in the league that will lay out for a ball any more willingly than gary clark that ball just just uh beyond his reach and ripon knows that if he just took a little bit off that pass he'd be down inside the 20. second and 10 for the redskins on the seahawks 44. ripon is going deep for clark he has his man beaten and this one he catches touchdown redskins [Applause] 44 yards right after they missed clark on a long one he's there for a touchdown and the redskins lead it 19-3 watch the seahawks come with the blitz there's glasgow and ml johnson right up the middle perfect protection here's the layout for the catch and the three-yard slide into the end zone six points and it's 19 to nothing seattle doesn't get anything on this that's for sure low miller looking to add the 20th point what a year for gary clark his ninth touchdown reception they must be reviewing something upstairs deciding whether to allow the slide into the end zone for the touchdown but they have to give him this because his momentum carried it in it didn't appear that patrick hunter laid a glove on him calipore upstairs is the replay official cal on the left but here's another look clark will catch the ball and dive at the two and then slides there's no contact after until after he's in the end zone good call it is a touchdown clark with his fifth 100-yard receiving game of the season and now low miller will try to make it 20 to nothing less than two minutes elapse in the second half and chuck knox has a long way to go with his seahawks [Music] we're back at the kingdome where the redskins have quieted the seahawks and the crowd leading 20 to nothing five plays 75 yards didn't take long and mark grippen through the air now chip lowmiller kicking off fielded by david hollis penalty marker down and hollis gets dumped inside the 15-yard line ben dreif with the usual signal illegal use of the hands against seattle that'll be half the distance well tomorrow week 16. illegal block on number 23. it all begins with the nfl today at 12 30 eastern time philadelphia needs a win to earn a wild card berth and if the giants were to lose to the raiders philadelphia can still take the division green bay wants to win against dallas hoping minnesota loses so the pack wins the central the rams are going to have to win to get into the playoffs as a wild card because the redskins don't look like they're going to lose today in detroit trying to finish on an up boat beat with five in a row against atlanta then at four o'clock eastern the second half of our doubleheader the bears against the 49ers at candlestick park first down on the seven craig is sacked for a safety by fred stokes so add two to the redskins total and now it's 22 to nothing number 60 is fred stokes working against andy heck and he gets right now to the inside against heck and picks up his third sack of the year and he's celebrating two points for the redskins stokes came over and that plan b has really looked to the guy on the other side charles mann for a lot of help and guidance and he's extremely happy as he told joe gibbs who had been a spot player stoke said just let me have a chance to play a little bit and i'll show you and of course gibbs says he'd heard that from so many players in his years around the league but this was one time where stokes has delivered as a starter and a regular strong inside move there's the congratulations from the other guys up front tracy rocker 99 and charles mann well the illegal block and half the distance marked off set it up for stokes the seahawks are just so flat the emotional pregame ceremony that appears has taken a lot out of them very hard for them to be in the locker room ready for the game to come out on the field and have that emotional setting where their leader is retiring and then have to play a game against a team with a lot of class and a lot of tradition and a team that's having a lot of fun out there the washington redskins [Applause] we have seen it in recent weeks when a team like new orleans out of the playoffs knocked off buffalo and we saw more upsets last week and i think that they're you know the word pride forget about that they're playing for themselves and everyone wants to win on an up note long offseason it's shorter for the winner of today's game though redskins receive after the safety ricky sanders at the 32. is stopped at the 41-yard line by elroy harris some pushing and shoving going on we have 12 56 most of the third quarter remaining 22 to nothing washington the washington redskins have it all over the seattle seahawks 22 to nothing just under 13 minutes to go in the third quarter steve largent in his farewell it's been a dismal game thus far for him and the seahawks as the redskins start from their 41-yard line griffin in the air completes it to terry orr and the big tight end rambles into seahawk territory and a gain of 22 yards eugene robinson and patrick hunter bring down ore this is only terry orr's third catch of the year he's the wing back on the left side of the screen and you would think that when the redskins come in with those big old tight ends that they're just going to pound the ball but not so ripping on the play fake a little roll out and he gets ore again open in the secondary first down on the seattle 37. breaks to the 35-yard line just two yards james jefferson making the stop already this consulate looks on the seattle bench even though we have most of the second half remaining well and that's really what they ought to be thinking about they're hanging their heads here and it's only inside of 12 minutes to go in the third quarter there's a lot of time left del ken baring the owner of the seahawks [Applause] redskins have had seven plays in this half five of them have gone for first down ripping going deep hunter is defending ricky sanders bryant with a pacific northwest welcome for mark ripon but he can handle it [Applause] people are going to start talking about the sea of the the redskins piling it on the seahawks here's jeff bryant number 77 getting in on ripon and making him pay for being a little greedy but you know this is a inter-conference game where you have the afc against nfc these people won't meet each other again for another four or five years so there's no thought to piling it on for joe gibbs he wants more points third down and eight pastor art monk is good for the first down rufus porter came storming into ripon and almost got him but a 13-yard gain hard monk patrick hunter makes the stop and a first down of the 22 of seattle well porter's going to the pro bowl as a special teamer but he also has 10 and a half sacks on the year outstanding speed as he runs right by ed simmons but the seahawks are in man-to-man coverage and ripon can just float the ball out lead his receiver monk across the middle just kind of a lob shot there and it's another first down for the redskins porter two years in a row pro bowl special teams performer seattle on the minus side and total offense here in the third quarter first and ten at the 22 ernest biner gets hit immediately by david wyman seahawks have won three in a row against pretty tough competition knocking over off the bills the bengals and the raiders last week following a dismal four-game losing streak but chuck knox stayed quiet in control and would like to finish this on an upbeat note but the handwriting is on the wall at this point the defense of the seahawks has to come up with a turnover and soon second down and ten getting rid of it in time and ernest binder on the receiving end penalty marker is down however and weiner gets inside the 10-yard line a gain of 14 to the running back rufus porter down field making the stop they're gonna flag melvin jenkins in the secondary for either holding illegal contact by the defense they decline a penalty first down that's the call and it'll be first and goal at the eight-yard line so the beat goes on for the redskins talking about one uncomfortable man chuck knox there on the sidelines he's not used to seeing this type of performance out of his football team [Applause] three tight ends for the redskins [Applause] he'll score his second touchdown of the game eight yards up the middle in the redskins now lead to 28 to nothing touchdown of the year his second today same type of play he ran the first time following terry orr into the hole cutting back against the grain slips one tackle and he's free and is now 29 to nothing in favor of washington with nine minutes and 27 seconds remaining in the third quarter the seahawks try to stem the tide some way [Applause] the redskins have increased their lead to 29-00 16 points in just under four minutes low miller kicking off elroy harris returning forward [Applause] and brings it out close to the 25. the key block on this touchdown from ernest beiner is by raleigh mckenzie number 63 as he's working against jethro franklin orr will come outside and block against wyman and the good block by mckenzie spins franklin around and a walk into the end zone for ernest beiner seven plays 59 yards in three minutes in 40 seconds the defender beat him badly and is out of bounds at the 42 a gain of 18. [Applause] well the seahawks are going to have to play bombs away football now they come in with the four wide receivers they're gonna have to throw it almost every down to get back in this ball game but as you mentioned the the redskins scored 16 points in just four minutes a lot of time is left in this game you know we got better than half of this third quarter to go so 29 points when you have talented receivers as the seahawks do have that can be overcome first down on the 42. [Music] frank completes the play and nearly intercepted by clarence vaughan nearly had it and you wonder how in the world brian blades could not hold on to that ball well this is two for blades today and both of them gets off inside against johnson his eye off the ball and almost pops this ball up in the air trying to make the catch and into the hands of clarence vaughn they've been 15 plays this half 12 of them run off by the red [Applause] he's got a first down into territory a penalty marker is now [Applause] wayne davis one of the nickelbacks and a former buffalo bill made the tackle [Applause] see if there's a personal foul that's a personal foul number 23 for piling on that's 15. that's the first down they're going to add 15 yards to todd bowles late hit how well they should blaze working against wayne davis and now here's 23 bulls coming in and that's a real cheap shot blades is down on the ground in fact he looked like he was ready to get up go back to the huddle by the time blades came in and just tagged him right in the nose you're not surprised that craig went right back to blades after he dropped the ball blades is now the primary receiver for the seahawks the mantle has been passed first down on the 32. [Applause] [Applause] [Music] a lot of [Applause] uh first down [Applause] charles mann made the hit and wilbur marshall makes the recovery as craig fumbles both of these quarterbacks have coughed it up in an ordinary amount of time this year and this is number 17 for number 17 dave craig charles mann coming all the way sets his sights and knocks the ball out with the right hand as he's wrapping craig up wilbur marshall gets a nice bounce and the seahawks continue to self-destruct marshall was shaken up a bit came over as you remember from the chicago bears as a free agent [Applause] before last season first down redskins following the turnover ernest beiner to the 35-yard line this is really where joe gibbs would like to just take all the air out of the football fill it with sand and keep handing it to his running backs behind that big offensive line and those three tight ends not been a busy day for steve largent except perhaps before the game seattle has turned it over for the second time and the redskins now with a second down and seven [Applause] gets to the 39-yard line it'll be third down jethro franklin defensive lineman and nesby glasgow for seattle this is what gibbs would like to see the rest of the day handing the ball to biner following the block of russ grimm and ed simmons on that left side as they pull and get out in front this is where biner wants to prove to joe gibbs that he can be an effective ball carrier in this situation he had riggins george rogers and then gerald riggs acquired he wants to show he's more than just the past catcher very valuable asset great acquisition in the offseason for the redskins [Applause] grip in the throw on third and four completes the pass maybe enough for the first down and apparently it is with forward progress art monk with the reception gripen is now 8 for 10 passing here in the second half james jefferson made the stop on him he's really only been pressured one time all day today third and four here he gets back with a lot of room in the pocket five steps fires it away monk with another trademark possession type of catch another first down five minutes remaining in the third quarter 29 to nothing in the redskins on first down is going to be stopped by joe nash and a loss on the play of about two yards you mentioned how both these quarterbacks have had trouble hanging onto the ball in the pocket that fumbled by dave craig being his 17th sets a ties in nfl record held by dan pastorini and warren moon [Applause] at 17 for fumbles and not the type of record you'd like to see but you know in his defense comes from the blind side big old guy like charles mann ripon much bigger than craig he's had the same kind of problem this year second down and 12. [Applause] [Music] the intended receiver jacob green on his tail that'll bring up third down griffin was telling us last night how it was a lot of fun for his high school in spokane to beat the big city boys in various sports come to seattle and win they come over from the palouse and uh playing the big city guys who think they're a little bit better than the country folk griffin has had a lot of success here in seattle third down and 12. [Music] going for art monk incomplete covered by patrick hunter and that will bring up fourth down and this will be the first time today that the redskins have had to punt could be a turning point in the game don't you think it's one we'll watch ogenko for his first try you know he's not loose awful good punter though david hollis is back for seattle and he didn't get off a good kick it's marked out of bounds on the seahawk 33-yard line only went 25 yards san diego would call that moshenko [Applause] back to the kingdome in seattle dick stockton and dan fouth with the redskins leading the seahawks 29 and nothing chip low miller with a field goal got the scoring underway and then ernest beiner following a seattle turnover made it 10 to nothing in the second quarter another low miller field goal it was 13 to nothing then clark on a 44 yard reception a safety and then another touchdown by byner and that's where we are first and 10 at the 33. [Music] [Applause] craig with a quick pass intended for scansi incomplete well with the redskins winning 29 to nothing the rams who were hoping that maybe washington would lose today and get them in the wild card through the back door now will have to win their game against the new england patriots in the cold in new england tomorrow and that's going to be no easy feat no it won't be rams playing in that cold frigid weather back there could affect their passing game and they have not run the ball well the second half of the season [Applause] [Applause] and he's whistled down at the 41 short of a first down by about a yard that's a bad call there he was still running the referee blew the whistle confusing blades obviously with a quarterback and in invoking the in the grasp rule blades is on the outside number 89 i'm not sure his momentum is ever completely stopped here davis and they blow the whistle a little bit too early that keeps the seahawks from picking up a first down third down and about a yard and a few more yards monty coleman brings him down a 20-yard gain hard tackle from coleman has large limping off the field here this is really what you didn't want to see both large and neil okowicz playing in their last game appear to have ankle injuries nice move away from mayhew watch how he covers the ball up as he feels company coming also aj johnson the cornerback limping off the field momentarily a few moments ago by washington we'll see who's in the game now first and ten at the 39 breaks pass by blades fumbles and washington's got to get it back again [Applause] and now alvin walton who made the fumble recovery in grant feasel diesel threw him down hard to the turf [Applause] feasel never heard the whistle or he was trying to deliver a message to alvin walton diesel got hit in the face and that's why i think he went after him [Applause] he's very upset he's yelling that some guy tried to put his eye out here's the entire play blades across the middle he's in good shape so far but the combination hit there from coleman and walton creates the fumble can't see what happened to fiezel though [Applause] big hit pops it out from behind by coleman the skins dive for it walton comes up with it on the bottom and the feasel incident happened away from the call well chuck knox told us yesterday problem is when we lost four in a row we shot ourselves in the foot and they're doing it again today on first down ernest with a good run up the middle starting from the 29-yard line tackled by jethro franklin there's walton who was a starter at strong safety now clarence vaughan had been in that spot when vaughn i'll tell you the redskins have had a lot of changes on both sides of the football from the familiar names that it played in recent years and they would be my nomination for the best team not going to the playoffs largent who limped off the field on the bench second down and four for the redskins on their 35. miner crosses the 35-yard line it'll be third and short for washington getting back to the seahawks shooting themselves in the foot they came into the game with a minus 12 turnover ratio added two to that to make it -14 and that's really unusual for a chuck knox coach team they've always been on the plus side and even a plus 15 and 16 when he had winning teams not only here but with the rams under a minute remaining in the third quarter it'll be third down and three for the skins [Music] [Applause] two tight ends [Applause] griffin's pass to a wide open gary clark he has the first down was looking for more running room as brought down at the 44 by nesby glasgow that may be the last play of the third quarter see clark start starting to as michael jackson moves there got hit from behind he almost fumbled that ball but you can't ask for more if you're a washington redskins fan they have cause turnovers they've exhibited tremendous ball control have mixed their offense and have been a very impressive team and that is the end of the third quarter with the score the redskins 29 the seahawks nothing we now pause for a word from your local station [Music] we start the fourth quarter with the redskins first down on their 45-yard line looking downfield gary clark is there and makes the catch inside the 30. glasgow on the stop that's a 26-yard gain and a field day for ripon who has the smile to prove it and when this game's over there may be just his family of 50 tickets left in the ballpark he's turning the lights out early on the seahawks on the rollout [Applause] no pressure at all and again a uh receiver running free in the secondary first down at the 29 reggie dupard former number one pick for the patriots wired by the redskins is in their backfield [Music] hard on the delay gets about a yard tackle made by david wyman well we talked about the posse here's how the three receivers have done today art monk the possession receiver has five ricky sanders three and gary clark having the big day with nine catches for 149 yards including a 44-yard touchdown reception probably the only team in the league where three guys can carry an entire offense the wide receivers 21 touchdown receptions these guys have made in fact clark's in the first half was his ninth that moves him just one ahead of art monk and in washington they're wondering why none of those three made the pro bowl second down and nine new cards gets inside the 25-yard line we'll bring up third and short but we talked about it getting back to the pro bowl voting and everything when the chargers three receivers john jefferson charlie joyner and kellen winslow all went over a thousand yards all three of them made the pro bowl but the fact that the chargers also won the afc west division had a big influence on the voting the redskins did not make the playoffs and many times players and coaches that do the voting look at the one loss record as well as the individual statistics third down and three [Music] [Applause] makes the tackle on reggie to stop him to bring up fourth down talking about those three wide receivers ricky sanders also has a pass completion he threw one 32 yards on a flea flicker to art monk in the first half just about everything they've tried out there today has been successful chip low miller is two for two in the field goal department this will be a 41-yard attempt ralph moscienko will hold and the kick is no good hooked off to the left at the last moment low miller is two for three right now ken baring the owner of the seahawks would just like to see seattle get on the scoreboard the redskins we've talked about clark and his nine catches and a touchdown it's 29 and nothing washington you know we've been talking about quarterbacks and fumbled well i've got the record book here and fumbles most fumbles career 106. dan fout san diego merry christmas dan thank you very much but in my defense they were all cheap shots in blindside i don't think so thanks a lot all right well that's okay you said before it's a record that no one wants and there it is 106. i want to wish uh our statistician roger reilly a very merry christmas for finding that yeah was roger who found it dubious dubious seattle with four wide receivers starting from the 24. [Applause] craig is going deep to chadwick and it's intercepted by brian davis who gets hit from behind near midfield that is the fourth turnover of the game the first three were fumbles and if you watch chadwick run this pattern he has no idea that the ball is under thrown in fact brian davis is the first guy to look up for this ball he sees it's right right away and he's running the route for chadwick davis comes away with his fourth interception of the year [Applause] first down on the 49 stan humphreys has come in the rookie who is expected to see action in the latter stages of the season for the redskins but humphries has replaced mark griffin reggie dupar on first down gets hit they're into seattle territory and a terrific day as we look at humphreys for mark grippen 22 of 31 290 yards one td and the deflected interception in the end zone by eugene robinson so mark ripon has given all the fans that came over here from eastern washington an early christmas present [Applause] second down and four on the seattle 45 actually the 460. [Applause] [Music] making the tackle joe kane so everyone getting a chance now in the final game of the season and the redskins with a 29 to nothing lead they've scored on the ground through the air they've had a safety and a couple of field goals gibbs is giving a lot of people a chance to play but when they get into these crucial situations like a third and four a special situation he's got to bring in his main people as you can tell the error posse is in monk clark and sanders they're down in four humphreys has the receivers covered and then gets sacked from behind by joe nash that's the first sack of the game by seattle humphreys [Applause] has not played except in one game in his career well his offensive line does an outstanding job of giving him about oh eight and a half seconds to get this one off but he has nice mobility in the pocket a lot of people in washington think that he and not mark griffin will be the quarterback of the 90s so far ripon's got a pretty strong hold on that position ralph bosienko will kick for only the second time david hollis is back for seattle alice feels it on the nine and goes out of bounds [Applause] nine minutes and 22 seconds remain in the fourth quarter of the final game of the season for both teams [Applause] on cbs sports first and ten seattle on the 17-yard line trailing 29 to nothing steve largens in the game but this pass is complete for lewis clark beyond the 20-yard line martin mayhew on the stop [Applause] [Music] [Applause] an injured monty coleman it appears to be is not the way you want to start your vacation off he's getting hurt in the last game of the year donnie coleman 32 years old played a long time in the league here he is on the tackle and his own guy comes in there and gets his right arm and then he gets hit from behind by derrick brill so he got the double whammy there coleman one of the veterans of course you remember the great linebacking corps with ulkowitz rich malott mel kaufman and coleman those four linebackers were the keys to joe gibbs defensive unit that were victorious in those super bowl triumphs a lot of new faces on the washington lineup in these this last month and in fact five weeks joe jacoby and mark may from the offensive line daryl green the cornerback dexter manly you know has been suspended at this point for life for his drug involvement barry wilburn also had problems in the with drugs as well and he was lost to the team all kinds of problems the redskins have had to deal with this year but a division title if they beat cincinnati on monday but green bay is still alive in the afc the bills by beating the jets today and the denver broncos have won their respective division crowns seattle was eliminated when buffalo won and later today houston and cleveland will decide the afc central crown bonnie coleman is up coming off on his own power coming off on his own power and also saying hey i'm okay that's joe gibbs makes him feel a lot better as well as all the redskins fans [Applause] second down and three for the seahawks on their 24. looking for scanzi and brian davis was right in the picture mayhew as well it is incomplete and that'll bring up third down brian davis has done a good job of handling his demotion playing in nickel situations but also being an outstanding performer on the special teams he has really impressed joe gibbs with his attitude davis and greene were the starting cornerbacks when the season started now mayhew and aj johnson two first-year men man in those positions third down and three [Applause] great getting some pressure dumps it off to john l williams williams fights his way out of bounds at the 32-yard line good for the first down wayne davis pushed him out of bounds we've been talking about steve largent and his pass catching abilities but this really sets him apart from the ordinary guy watch him working on alvin walton he may have got away with a clip there because he definitely hit walton in the back but it's the effort that should be pointed out losing cause always fighting first and ten at the 32 for the seahawks that much time remaining in the fourth quarter through the hands of brian blades incomplete talking to largent yesterday and he admitted to us that despite the fact that the seahawk management to try to sort things out it had been a week of distractions for so many demands on him and on his time interviews autograph sessions the guy is as close to a perfect human being as i've ever met in the athletic field maybe the best ever receiver obviously has all the numbers to back up that claim he broke don hudson's 44-year record of 99 touchdown receptions until he broke it a couple of weeks ago second and ten break incomplete to scanzi and that'll bring up third down arjun has a lot of memorable moments in his career [Applause] 14-year career but i asked him what was his most memorable one and that's the first year under chuck knox back in 1983 when the seahawks went to the playoffs and went all the way to the afc championship game [Applause] third down and 10. [Applause] [Music] and it was brian davis who came in to make the play it'll be fourth down i think they'll go for it what do you think well let me think mull this one over they have to call a timeout to decide and the people that are still here finally all year long they've been yelling go for it go for it on fourth yeah well merry christmas fans you get your wish you know there's something else there uh at stake for the seahawks not going to win this game it appears but they have not been shut out since december of 1982 when the patriots beat him 16 nothing it's been seven years since they've been blanked third warner carries and kurt warner won't make it fourth and one they go for a sweet play and the redskins stop him and will take over on downs fred stokes was the man stokes and a bunch of people on the right side number 60 there is stokes he gets off right now penetration and there's just a whole bunch of redskins there keeping warner from that first down stokes has a safety today made a good play there still 29-0 washington they'll have the ball working to be the best they can be teammates sponsored by the u.s army john l williams blocking for kurt water is a common sight in seattle but well we started the day talking about two of the fine coaches in the game joe gibbs of the redskins and chuck knox of the seahawks they're in special company 100 wins don shula chuck noll the others in that order the top four coaching of all time i think we can change that to 102 for joe gibbs reggie barry's on first down david wyman making the stop that's the time remaining 29 to nothing the redskins started early on with a very impressive first drive out on the board with a field goal then took advantage of a seattle fumble and scored a touchdown it was ten nothing after the first quarter a couple of times the seahawks look like they had a chance to get back in the game but two of their three turnovers came when they were really threatening the redskins and dave craig looking at his wristband where he has a number of plays none of those players are jumping back at them right now second down and seven no gain that time for dupard we'll bring up third down jethro franklin making the tackle [Applause] you said before the redskins the best team not to make the playoffs i would put them in the same class as the packers if green bay doesn't make it and wins both teams green bay and washington would be 10-6 and shut out of postseason five weeks ago five and six for the redskins they have really put it together based upon joe gibbs his belief that he can play with younger players and mix those in with some classy veterans third down and six stan humphreys [Applause] didn't make the sticks slid too early david wyman makes the stop since 1981 the best finishers in the last month of the season the 49ers and the redskins this year they've held form both 3-0 in the final month of the season and washington winning here san francisco west coast team washington east coast teams show that they can go in december hasn't worked out for larget in his final game but it has for the career fourth down in one and reggie dupard has the first down for the redskins stan humphreys the second year quarterback from northeast louisiana division one double a i talked to steve about uh the future and obviously he's going to be into in the hall of fame and he didn't really want to talk about it because he didn't want to sound presumptuous but listen steve your statistics and your career talks volumes you can't break all those records even if some of them might be surpassed and not get in there can't how many fumbles did largent have look it up roger reilly will check it out carl harry in the game as a wide receiver in motion due part good run by reggie dupard gets to the 25. don't think this is an important game for him because he knows when the redskins go to carlisle next summer he wants a shot he also wants to show something before the plan b situation takes effect where redskins will have to decide which players to protect and which ones to take a calculated risk on reggie dupard right now is auditioning for a spot on this football team next year it'll be second down and seven at the 25. [Applause] three minutes and 42 seconds remaining in the game [Applause] [Music] and some nifty moves is brought down by eugene robinson at the six yard line where it'll be first and goal dupard working behind lashay and mckenzie on the left side following terry orr up into the hole or didn't make his block until he was five yards down the field that allowed dupar to get free in the secondary and he started heading right for that end zone didn't he right at the end of that run 40 yards on 10 carries all here in the fourth quarter for reggie duparr it'll be first and goal at the six yard line there's doug williams and there's a story about that veteran quarterback lost his footing on the fact that stan humphries has been elevated to the number two spot and is playing right now some speculation as to whether doug williams will be back next year he wants to be back on the redskins he likes his situation here but he also knows that there are a number of teams in the league they can use the quarterback a veteran quarterback and he he mentioned to me before the game that the saints might be one the bears might be another he feels that he can get along but there's also that team out on the west coast whether they're in los angeles or oakland called the raiders he wouldn't mind playing for as well but he believes that joe gibbs knows his value to this football team and the way quarterbacks get injured these days nice to have a guy like doug williams as a backup two-minute warning is here at the king dome [Applause] we'll be back 29 nothing with two minutes to go there's art monk the leading receiver for the redskins this year and with five catches today right now lead sterling sharp of the packers by one in the nfc derby and of course sharp we'll get one more shot against the cowboys tomorrow so uh i don't like monk's chances of leading the nfc you're tough to hold sharp scoreless we know one thing that hatchless monk's not going to catch anymore as joe gibbs doing a very classy thing here not going to pile on the points against the seahawks they just try to run this clock out seahawks are going to let the clock go too you know art monk he started this season 11th in all-time receiving over eight guys now just trails my old teammate charlie joyner and steve [Applause] the big thing about chuck knox this year is his team had lost he didn't point any fingers he didn't go wild he just stayed cool he said the foundation's going to take care of it they did they won three games before the loss today and i think in the long run you win with that kind of an attitude well you really do the interesting thing here now for the redskins as far as the finish of this game here it is fourth down now will he gives elect to put in the field goal kick or will they just kneel on the ball one more time give the seahawks the ball back for one last play and perhaps one more completion for steve largent 14 seconds on the clock [Applause] fourth down and the play clock had gone down to 10 so it'll be first down for seattle with 31 seconds to go in the game and largest going to come back in and give the fans who have remained here maybe one last thrill the redskins will finish 10-6 three games better than a year ago but not make the playoffs for the second straight year and seattle will go out 7-9 first losing year since chuck knox became head coach in 83. argent did not come back in the game [Applause] so the thrills are over and all it's going to be is a handshake in his final game redskins will win 29-0 the rams will have to win against new england tomorrow for a wild card steve largent priceless performer hey good luck to you thanks thanks [Applause] a long walk for a last time for a great performer in the nfl [Applause] steve largent caught two passes for 41 yards in his final game of a great career the redskins beat seattle seahawks 29-00 we'll be back with brent mussberger in new york
