the two hendersons are at the top they've juggled the lineup moving dave henderson up to second in the absence of carney lansford conseco stays third and right maguire the first baseman and cleanup man steinbach will be the dh with hassi catching phillips ahead of hassey in the lineup gallego at second he's played short twice in the first three games and weiss is at shortstop and hitting in the ninth spot a control pitcher he walks as many as he strikes out he will pitch around a lot of hitters and he'll have a little more room to pitch around with carney lansford out of the lineup and bob mike flannigan the kind of guy who uses his defense very well especially the sky dome he may have been the first to discover or john cerrodi that if they pitch the right-hand hitters away with fastballs they can get the ball hit the center field and let the speed of wilson mosby and felix chase the ball down in the outfield hernandez we talked about him being emotionalized which was a word of your choice not mine wait a minute you said it now but it's a it can be a very steady defensive team and sometimes you can make all kinds of mistakes yesterday felix overthrew cutoff man it didn't come back to bite him though that would be elvis i believe in the middle and we might as well right off the bat clarify a statement and it may be a puzzle to those of you watching in the states you saw some of the signs elvis is alive directed toward me in the ninth inning of game one in oakland there we go with eckersley on the mound with a commanding lead and all things considered as effective as eck has been the last couple of years i said jokingly that in that one game in the ninth inning elvis probably had a better chance of coming back than the blue jays a newspaper here took that completely out of context made it sound as if i said the jays had no chance to come back in the series which would be absurd after just one game especially considering the recent history of upsets and comebacks in post-season play and that's become a big deal here good naturedly though for most ricky henderson lifts an easy fly to center we're underway with mosby making the catch an interesting part of the veteran plan again he needs the outside part of the plate he will throw the curve ball but he and ernie whit will see what daryl cousins the home plate umpire will give them on the outer edge when he gets a chance [Music] cousins behind the plate rick reed at first steve palermo at second dave phillips the crew chief at third dan morrison on the left field line dale ford who worked the plate last night calling the plays down the right field side dave henderson has two doubles in a home run the same number of extra base hits as the entire toronto team through the first three games [Music] that's exactly what flanigan would like to have from daryl cousins he would like to have that portion of the outside corner and more and that pitch you just saw was a backdoor breaking ball and he will go out there farther fernandez drifting back from short [Applause] flanigan pitched one of the stronger games of the season for the blue jays and i'm not excluding dave steve one hitters of course but it happened to be against this oakland team beat them two to nothing in exhibition stadium a complete game when the bullpen was struggling but this man was not in the lineup they had not yet gotten ricky henderson so it's a little bit different lineup now bob that was a four-hitter at exhibition stadium he struck out four and walk one then he worked six and two thirds and beat them again in july in this building inside to conseco flanagan has always had a good sense of humor about himself and these days he describes himself as a veteran lobber he'll try and sink the fastball his curve is one of the best among left-handers in the american league at times you can't have trouble getting the curve over coming over the top to the right-handed hitters he won't walk you and he won't strike you out for the most part the 2-0 pitch they're gonna get out of the inning one two three three balls hit in the air against flanagan felix making the catch here no score after half an inning at the skydome [Music] i wanted to live in the rocky mountain region i enjoyed the great outdoors i enjoyed putting some time off to fish to play soccer 12 or 13 of us have played together now for eight to ten years we just have a good time what tom does is he doesn't care if we make mistakes he doesn't get down on anybody treats everybody fair it's all teamwork no individual players lot of these players depend on tom dater for their life insurance good hustle good comeback he's been on their team for 10 years and with new york life for 18 years well why would i buy insurance from a stranger when i can buy it from the worst fullback in boise new york life the company you keep today's duracell battery lasts up to 30 longer than the one from a few years back [Music] [Music] do you think we should keep the drums in that part i don't know we should try it a few ways i think by yourself just like a dance just try to hold back at the beginning that's male okay let's try it [Music] definitely missing something without the truth of the year i keep the drums in that part let's go gaston's lineup should look familiar to you mosby wilson mcgriff bell the dh the elbows bothering him again second straight game he's de-aced after playing left the first two games in oakland hernandez with gruber lee and felix at second and right respectively again they hadn't played until yesterday line drive to center mosby on the game's first pitch from welch has his second hit of the series and runs down to first clapping his hands they want to get this crowd into the game as much as possible ordinarily a baseball crowd is not going to be roaring from pitch to pitch they're going to erupt at exciting moments in the game but they're not going to have that din behind you throughout the entire game as a basketball crowd would or an indoor football crowd would but in post-season in this park it could be different especially if the jays strike early remember hassi is behind the plate today not steinbach steinbach a better thrower hassie with leg problems sometimes as difficult as getting out of the crouch a base stealer on in mosby and welch features a very good curveball maybe his best pitch on a fourth ball why is hassie catching well when welch came into the league from the dodgers hassie knew the league better steinbach was new so they paired them together and that's dave duncan and by pairing them together it made welch feel more comfortable in the american league he's gone swinging a miss by mookie asi's throw mosby steals it not a good pitch to throw on appear to be a fork ball down low mosby with a very very quick first two steps early in the season lloyd couldn't have done this he had late problems he had a lower back problem he appears to be running better now mookie bounces one right side they get the man to third with one out as gallego throws to mcguire when they first obtained mookie wilson he wasn't hitting but he did that twice in ball games 4-3 one to set up a run that george bell drove in for sac fly they wanted two to one and one to get an insurance run so we brought a little bit of the national league style and how they are forced to advance runners more bj bird takes a seat among the 50 000 here he'll concede the run with mcgriff at the plate welch works and there's a strike bob welch was just 21 years old when he stared reggie jackson down in game two of the 1978 world series struck him out to end the game and preserve the victory and now ahead of mcgriff owen two that remains one of the classic moments in the history of world series play didn't reggie also had a home run over the right field bullpen off in that series in the sixth game which turned out to be the final one as the yankees won the last four in succession one and two for welch this is his sixth league championship series appearance four of them with la last year in this with oakland he's pitched in the world series three times 78 and 81 for the dodgers last year against the dodgers for the a's two and two [Music] it seems as if freddie mcgriff thus far league championship play has been a little bit late on fastballs he's having some difficulty catching up and he gets him swinging going with the fastball away to him after he got ahead especially and a different look fastball bobby you've thrown pretty much four seam fastballs that were riding and this one he'll go with the seams and look at the little tailing action a little bit of safe and mostly tail it's a bit mcgriff's had trouble with over the latter part of the season the pitch away from the fastball so mosby remains at third with two down here's bell two for 11 in the series with a sacrifice fly and strike one to him he narrowly missed a home run last night off gene nelson no indication daryl cousins would have strikes us to this point but a couple of calls we've seen that last one giving a little bit of the outside corner decoy in by hassi as we've mentioned often when jimmy key has pitched on games here on nbc watch hassie he had set up inside because they've been pounding george bell in pounded the glove in and then slid away this will be a 1-1 pitch big cut and a miss as we mentioned when key is worked in games on nbc he's a guy who will test an umpire try and find out just how many inches outside that outside corner he can get away with dale ford didn't allow him many the pitchers always want more than they deserve a veteran wants a little bit more and if you give it to him he'll take it hitters will give you the reverse one and two george bales at bat within the scoring position are something to watch they make perfect pitch on him and he just has the facility a slugger who has excellent bat control these are the situations where he flares the ball the opposite way nasty against pound in decoy away you see george bell put almost on the plate following that pitch on his fist he pops it back hassie off with the mask there's room having trouble with it he's got the ball as he hits the deck looking up at the roof for clues as to what caused the problem lost his dignity but kept the ball no score after one in a world of distractions and unexpected turns a car should be like a friend you don't have to talk to the mazda 66 is actually engineered to feel just that way resulting in an uncanny ability to make you feel in control at the same time it makes you feel relaxed the 626 from mazda me is he still upset well you know dad never really understood why i joined i mean maybe you'll go straight to college but i had to prove something to myself first the gi bill and army college fund if you qualify you can get more than 25 000 for college and an edge on life you think dad will ever come around there's a motor oil that says it's engineered for today's smaller cars like sports cars but is that motor oil the first choice of the members of the sports car club of america no valvoline is the first choice of the members of the sports car club of america valvoline makes the highest quality motor oil recommended by any automobile manufacturer people who know use valvoline you're in hong kong i like it maguire steinbach and phillips no score top of the second jays had mosby a third with one out in their half of the first and couldn't score bob i would think ray miller the pittsburgh pitching coach for jimmy leland and former mike flanigan pitching coach would be proud kind of memorial theory establish your fastball and then go to the off speed stuff that's what planning it did in the first had a sinker bowl hit through the left side so mcguire continues to hit well he's five for 11 in the series [Music] including a home run same story for him last year as for his buddy conseco big lcs and then shackled in the world series conseco had only the grand slam off belcher that was his only hit in the series and for maguire the only hit he got was the game-winning homer of jay howell in game three bob we're already seeing some subtle defensive changes on the fly so to speak there's that back door breaking ball that mike flanny would love to have a lot of the outside corner but talking to some of the blue jay scouts remember maguire hit the ground ball down the left field line in oakland for basic last time up gruber was cheating more toward the line getting the hole in the base that sneaked through there that's gordon lakey dave bloom dave yoakam three scouts that followed this ball club adjusting from game to games to how the pitchers are going to pitch ron shooter doing the same thing for the oakland the pitch to steinbach is in there for a strike flanagan worked 211 innings this year and walked only 47. he struck out exactly the same number so he's going to make you put it in play interesting how maybe an injury to lansford can start a chain reaction in the lineup you want hassi catching because of welch yes he does decently against flanigan but park route had a home run off jimmy key yesterday you want steinbach's bat in there so tony larussa after last night's ball game you think you would have parker's bat in there that's steinbach dave hit the hanging breaking ball over the right center field fence against jimmy key [Music] the o2 pitch mcguire led off with a single he's at first with nobody out no score top half of the second game four oakland in front 2-1 the home team has won every game the team that has scored first has lost every game how to play that's a pitch that's easy to give up for a right-handed hitter again merv retin moon hitters meeting i'm certain he said don't give up on the breaking ball away starts the foot outside he's going to nibble on the corner but as soon as they start leading out for that flanagan may just try and bust steinbach inside and tie him up and get the ground ball double play on the left side struck him out [Applause] that's what that breaking ball will do to you set up the fastball with the breaking ball and then throw it by it i mean it's not 90 miles an hour but it doesn't have to be all relative what the guys looking for what the pitch before was to set this pitch up and it was the breaking ball away that set that pitch up phillips three for 11 as a hitter and he's really been outstanding defensively playing third today with lansford hurt moving over from second tony from the right side choking up on the bat almost as much as jerry coleman did when he was a yankee player you don't see that very often do you up about six inches on the back floats one outside 1-0 in relatively recent history the guy i remember choking up the highest was felix mion second baseman played for atlanta and other clubs of course you go way back and look at the pictures and the old film clips of the old timers then you had the guys with the gap grips way up around the label fouled off one and one there's nice light 30 ounce whippy back made a lot of little guys think they're power hitters especially in that 87 season game three in the national league is tonight from candlestick sutcliffe and lacasse even up at one after splitting two at wrigley two balls of the strike to tony phillips a lot was made of jimmy key's move yesterday and he has a beauty flanagan not far behind tricky head movement and not only does it keep the running game going the stolen base game but it keeps that man frozen so he can't get the extra two or three steps to break up a double play always that first move back to the bag dave mckay the coach yelling get back sometimes you'll hear coach young get back even when the guy's going home flanagan's move can be that good runner not going phillips bluffing a bunt and it's ball three we told you that flanagan is 2-0 this year against oakland for his career and of course this goes back to the time when he was a more dominant pitcher and the oakland roster had entirely different players on it but overall he's 18 and seven against the age nine and one at oakland some people thought he might have been a good choice for game two instead of young stottlemyer in which case had the series gone that long he would have pitched twice in oakland two and six well i think cetl gaston and the scouting department to watch this team felt that the left-handers were better not that the open elementary coliseum was small but cedar gaston was told that this park is better for his left-handed pitchers he wanted to get todd stottlemyer against all those right-handed bats in oakland maguire a short lead from first and chased back by flanagan there's a 3-2 pitch coming with one out here cassie is on deck because phillips doesn't track it a whole lot you'd expect him to remove him he's not ball four well flanagan who walked only 47 struck out only 47 all year long in around 200 innings strikes out steinbach and walks phillips back to back and here's a good example with hassey stepping in of how tony larusse and dave duncan protect their pitchers first and think hitting second by matching cassie with welch we've got the good vibes even though there's a left-hander on the mound bruce will tell you the strength not the bass brothers the strength of this club has been his pitching especially this year with all the injuries with steinbach d.h they've got both catchers in effect in the lineup for this game for the year the two catchers combined for only 12 home runs and 65 rbis back to the box could be two flanagan wheels and pegs it to fernandez a line drive double play 1-6 on to the bottom of the second no score [Music] in the movies happy endings are easy but in the real world they take solid planning so for investment advice peace of mind even buying or selling a home come to the companies of the prudential and build your future on the rock today's union movement is all about giving people a voice in what goes on at work and in supporting one another i believe in that i said union [Music] yes when lunch and a day at the park are too much for tommy lasoda he reaches for rollies nothing works better for acid indigestion and why should heartburn take the fun out of the game relief you know how to spell it [Music] now that you know what it feels like to move in the mx-6 sports group [Music] come sit in the saddle the mx-6 from mazda [Music] [Applause] a teen's first date becomes her dad's worst nightmare i'm gonna put her in the basement with a chastity belt and a pit bull join an all-star cast in a comedy adventure dream day monday [Music] it was a one ball no strike count planning it missed with a curveball hassey was sitting on a fastball but a perfect pitch by flanagan up and in to break his bat and he gets the dp hernandez two doubles came last night he knocked home two with the shot down the right field line in the fourth then he led off with an opposite field double off the 328 sign in left and that began a big rally in the seventh a liner back to the box that welch catches that hurt you'll see the near perfect follow through position the glove tucked up we've heard tom seaver and al woodmart talk about it to keep that left shoulder in you keep it there for a couple reasons you tuck it on the left side some to the shoulder so you keep the left shoulder and also to be in this kind of feeling position hit a lot harder than hassie's was to flanagan love just having me right there ball caught him when folks watch the national league series they'll see the pitcher who is in perhaps the worst feeling position of any active pitcher when he completes his delivery the wild thing mitch williams he's fallen toward third base yeah we saw that one of our games remember this year king hit him right on the side of the head came back and fits the next day he said his sideburns deflected it absorbed most of the impact i mean a line drive right off his dome by jeff king the next day he's smiling about it they've got the defense stacked over to right field for ernie whip not a chef but awfully close in there for a strike two and one whit has two hits in the series the game won homer in oakland off stewart and a little blue to center field that produced what turned out to be the game-winning run it snapped the three-all tie right after fernandez is double and tony had moved up to third on the play at the plate and then whit flared one into center henderson couldn't get there that scored fernandez made it 4-3 and the blue jays never looked back gruber on deck hit well right field conseco has it get right into the stack defense they'd swung over for ernie for a strict pull hitting situation in some left-handers or if they pull a complete shift he might shoot the ball through the left field side he made a great throw yesterday conseco getting a very fast runner off second felix gruber with a base hit and it's his first of the series he hit 290 for the year with 18 home runs made the all-star team that gets b.j bird going and the two mascots now actually bj byrd who's been here since the exhibition stadium days and when they moved into the sky dome they brought domer the turtle along with them i'll stick with b.j dave parker not playing today next to him phelps who got a big pin yesterday a base dealer on kelly gruber throughout the lineup especially lanford out the blue jays have more running speed from the oakland athletics except oakland has the guy who's capable of affecting a game with his legs blue jays have six base stealing possibilities in the lineup today you could include lee in that he's got quickness but not a lot of speed gruber stole 10 during the year you know it's a tougher day to steal when you play a night game your legs aren't rested well so many players come out on artificial surface with a short night's sleep and they can't get the stiffness out kelly gruber's been reaching behind and massaging his hamstrings apparently trying to get them loose two and automatically one for four last night in his first appearance of the series felix the right fielder on deck bottom of the second no score two out and gruber at first there goes the runner swinging a miss by lee hassie's throw a stolen base [Music] both these steals have been principally off welsh you see rye is a hitter 2-0 with the swinger to pitch this part of the strike zone well to keep that catcher one step back which may be the step you need high delivery high relief from hassey and the throw flies high this is the most aggressive player on this team in all departments kelly gruber consistently lee trying to pick him up now from second takes outside three and one with the sign and welch the pitch full count welch has been a 17-game winner each of his two seasons with the a's 17-9 a year ago with an era of 3.64 this year 17 and 8 but a much better earned run average exactly three seventh best in the american league and a good figure in a dh league press conference yesterday he was asked to put how bad is your arm is tired very tired the way he's thrown fast because it doesn't look that way thrown pretty quickly still haven't seen a big hard curve that he features [Music] he said the same thing about dave stewart all the innings and three consecutive 20-win seasons the arm is tired knee through hard also little gamesmanship you think bob or maybe you have to say larussa and duncan made the right choice by holding him back giving him the extra rest sure here's a bouncing ball toward the middle gallego whirls throws and gets him nice backhand play and leaping throw and we're back after these messages from your local station i can make this all rich monday al plays the stock market what a great game but what if he loses the family's money i'm playing with real money then the hogan family finds puppy love oh no no how was your walk with cujo while the boys had a shot at brotherly love hurt me dave i'm yours we're trying to family fun monday you know where your friends are gonna be tonight league championship series is brought to you by honda who invites you to test drive the new accord you have to drive it to believe it and by high performance compact personal computers compact it simply works better tony larussa said of gallego who played short yesterday makes this brilliant play with the strong throne manually that he is the best second baseman he's ever seen because managers always speak glowingly of their own players when you watch this little acrobat do something like this and get manny lee pretty quick going down the line from the left side tony may have something well you've got to have a strong arm to be able to do that he also called gallego maybe his team's mvp this year outside of the pitching staff in a year when maguire hit over 30 homers but the batting average fell off where parker was confined to dh duties where conseco missed half the year is gallego at the plate ball one where lansford threatened to win the batting title but didn't hit for as much power as he has in past seasons where weiss missed two and a half months with an injured knee maybe he's got a point you know there are very few guys can play one position one day and do well and go over the other side of the diamond where the angle of the ball off the bat is different and make those kinds of plays mosby comes in and there's the first out in the top half of the third and we were in commercial a while ago relation to tom hankey the closer that little message on the board he got a standing ovation his wife sitting back in taos missouri tom hankey's name is kathy had a little baby girl their fourth lindsay nine pounds eight ounces and they didn't tell tom last night that she'd gone to the hospital in labor they were afraid he'd get nervous he found out this morning when they called him and to show you a real baseball fan what they're like in missouri as you all know while she was going in labor she was watching the game on tv [Music] congratulations kathy in time for little lindsey weiss at the plate headless in four trips in the series when he won rookie of the year honors last year he became the third straight oakland player to do it in the american league conseco and maguire had preceded him here it is on two and one hard hit fair ball extra bases down into the corner mookie wilson in pursuit and weiss in with a one-out double kelly gruber was creeping he was near the line but he was creeping in looking for weiss to possibly start something with a bunt and the changeup that was inside instead of out away from weiss is able to get in the left field corner [Music] weiss wedding rookie of the year honors making it three in a row for oakland reminds us of the dodgers situation truly remarkable a tribute to their farm system and a little luck and circumstance late 70s early 80s four in a row sutcliffe howe fernando valenzuela steve sacks four consecutive rookies of the year all right here's henderson they've gotten him out four straight times [Music] dave henderson on deck down and into ricky as if you need more evidence about how deadly it is to put the guy on base they've walked him five times he scored after four of those walks you know we've talked about mike flanagan's outstanding move to first but some of their left-handers for the blue jays are a little slow going home and that's why manu lee forced to keep jockeying back and forth with weiss at second base yesterday it didn't hurt him but he left the entire right side open every time there was a man on second base they get very aggressive leads off second bases oakland athletics ball club i mean they do not go back they latchment and the third base coach will pick up one man and watch him and the runner will pick up the other and they'll get out there way past the edge of the dirt and are never going back to second look where lee is that decoying is done for a couple of purposes to keep him close obviously or in the event of a pick-off but also to keep the runner at second base occupied so he cannot look into the catcher and relay at least location to pitch and he wants to keep him active that way here's the throw from ernie and there's the steal by walt weiss of third base yep and if you know a series of signs even if you can't relay it if you are able to pick up the pitch selection and if you see the breaking ball sign or a change up you get a couple of extra steps and ernie wood has no chance whatsoever the contrast is almost eerie here with 50 000 anytime the blue jays do something there's a tremendous roar but listen to how quiet 50 000 people can be they're in at the corners gruber and mcgriff manny lee about halfway junior felix with the exceptional throwing arm and right field on this outfield this will get a run home maybe more mosby going back looking up out of here and into the black seats the hitting background there aren't many lead off men who can launch one like that to dead center field about a 430 foot shot two-nothing oakland i think we talked about that yesterday when jimmy key was the starter that you might negate might she will negate some of ricky henderson's base stealing for the left on the mound but he becomes a little bit better extra baser but that far i'll show you that with a full house a nice warm building a little more humidity the ball is flying i don't think ricky could even believe it went that far he thought it might be up against what's that 430 that would be my guess in that vicinity dave henderson he hit one about 460 while steve in the opening night of this series [Music] the team that scored first has always lost and the home team has always won that's been the pattern of the first three games mosby was playing ricky henderson relatively shallow and look where it ends up well freddie mcgriff has hit one in that area and one above i'll show you how strong ricky henderson is and out of that deep crouch ricky can generate a lot of power that lower leg by that's where griffin went off that glass right field 440 something a hard rock cafe out there lou brock had a couple of years with good power numbers in the 60s i think he had 21 year for the cardinals he was stronger especially in his prime than people would have thought but all things considered ricky has had several years with 18 20 home runs you saw where he hit that one i can't think of many if any lead off hitters who have combined power with anything like his sort of speed is he is it even worth questioning now the greatest lead-off hitter of all time cobb lead off uh from here to here i'd have to say in the last high maybe modern day baseball i don't know but i've never seen any better than him that well-rounded in every area high on base percentage you'll get your decent slugging percentage get you a quick lead with all the home runs you sit leading off ball games and getting scoring position at will that's a ricky anderson rally he's the walk steal second steal third sac fly without a hitch you get a run with ricky again he's worth a run again i don't know if there's any questions more so far today gotta consider that on base percentage he walked 126 times full count now to dave henderson so he's always on base and when he doesn't steal as tony has pointed out constantly he disrupts the defense he changes the pitching pattern to the ensuing hitters sharply to short fernandez made only six errors all year yeah but a play like that if he doesn't get it it's not an error and that's the point shortstop not supposed to get down it's too hard hit too hard on an artificial surface it's supposed to be in the outfield that is tony fernando's strong sign going to his left he has the range of anybody in the game about four steps the other day on the ball to his right instead of throwing on the run as he has in the past he planted and threw and this time he had enough foresight to ride himself and make a strong throw off speed pitch for a strike to conseco how would you like to be cal ripken jr play every game make only eight errors all year at shortstop and probably be denied a gold glove because fernandez made only six seiko bids for the second homer of the inning watch if it's fair he's got it and it settles into the upper deck oh my goodness mcguire hit one that close in that four game series with the oakland athletics hit seven in the four game series and i mean close this is another 20 feet into the fourth level a double by weiss and a pair of monumental homers from ricky henderson and conseco three-nothing a's well this dwarfs ricky henderson's we were talking 420 or 430. this is a 31 foot tall building it didn't hit the roof 31 stories holy cow i'll give a picture whiplash 50 000 people here and i've heard libraries louder like ernie witt's home run open deafening silence shift is on now for maguire lee moves over to the third base side that we're told is the first home run ever hit into the sky dome's upper deck maguire came close unchartered territory two and two are you a little involved i mean a little when you saw that ball start out your news hit hard and it just kept climbing and carrying and all the defensive players were watching it maguire becomes the last out of the inning but the gopher ball bites flanagan in a big way watch conseco again even he has to admire it and who can blame him [Music] the latest technology is lucas it's time to board you have time for this i have time the compact laptop pushes the state of the art that's neat it's my secret weapon compact understands what its customers want welcome to new york how was the flight i can't wait to show you it's a good thing that hotline is a 900 number because conseco hit one out of this area code when we get a shot you'll see dave parker from the dugout admiring the shot and when you get a bachelor like parker to stop and stare in awe you've done something watch big dave not playing today can you believe it he says i love rhett and the hitting instructor turned the other way in disbelief bouncing ball gallego throws junior felix out and that's the way the last half of the third begins and look at how close junior felix made that play with gallego playing in and loaded with his strong arm in a hurry he was just out you know maybe a stride and a half you cannot waste any time with junior felix from the left side we got a lot on it maybe a couple strides away now remember this the blue jays trailed three nothing last night and got four in the fourth and then three more later mosby singled stole a base got to third with one out in the first but then mcgriff fanned and bell fouled out and they couldn't find him [Music] 2-0 mookie wilson next [Music] game one starters come back tomorrow stewart and steve you know part of the reason why at least in my opinion tony let's see what you think the oakland fans were relatively subdued during the first two games of the playoffs they reacted of course at exciting moments home runs and ricky steals but they weren't roaring throughout part of the reason is that while you don't take any opponent for granted the oakland fans are looking toward the world series which they think they should have won a year ago and so they are less able at least right out of the box to get excited about the playoffs than they would be about the world series of course if this series comes back to oakland in a 3-2 situation or something like that mosby hits one up the middle and he's got his second straight hit if it comes back closely contested then the a's fans should be at the edges of their seats lime knows who has struggled in the lead-off spot the low on base percentage comes up with a couple of base hits he was involved in the rally yesterday with a walk but when you're down three to nothing will it take the running game away you've seen already they feel they can run on both welch and hassey when you're trailing you may not be able to take the chances you know sometimes bobbin reply to what you're saying i think open air stadium sometimes like oh remember exhibition standing here sounded quiet the fans weren't cheering but the sound goes into nowhere out in the blue and in a contained stadium we saw in minnesota not as bad here but close last night it holds the sound very well but they were you're right they were subdued i think and they have been at times in this stadium just before that basic they're kind of quiet here being down three nothing it's not often in baseball that you talk in terms of taking the crowd out of a game or getting them back into it like you do in basketball but in the postseason and in an enclosed stadium like you say tony it is a factor and it will be closed for all three games here this was the only one where there was a chance that it would be open it's 50 degrees outside kind of windy and when the wind swirls through here it can be pretty uncomfortable i think dude sometimes the price of tickets in postseason play the average joe the ordinary fan goes bouncing balls toward the vacated spot weiss grabs it but has to eat it he has no play with the speedy wilson okay that is very gutsy baseball by cedaw gaston beware it'll get louder still young lady if mcgriff catches hold of one here tying run at the plate swing and a miss he came up in the fourth inning last night in an almost identical situation two men on and the j's trailing three nothing he lined a hard single to right and it was part of the four run rally interesting play bob because oakland was going to get one shirt out on that ground ball but cedar gas had enough faith in the mookie wilson twice we got them over the right side one time got thrown in the third and this and lucky strikes out a lot but he felt he could put the ball in play down three to nothing and he kept the city going welch worked him with fastball's tailing away in the first inning when he needed a strikeout man on third one out and he got him swinging let's see how he works from here ahead of him one and two bell on deck mosby at second wilson at first one out bottom of the third three nothing open 36 homers for the year none in more than a month two and two gotta run through my memory bank in this game i haven't seen that real hard curve from welsh in the air to center field henderson started in goes back it's playable mosby tags at second base wilson holds first runners at the corners but with two out and here comes george bell ted williams had the theory that you keep hitting high fly balls you're late you're winning a lot of ground balls you're swinging too early and fred mcgriff keeps hitting those high fly balls indicating he's still late on this oakland staffs fastball henderson knows just where to go not make a wasteful throw to third and he goes to second how about the henderson style dave henderson of waving ricky off instead of waving the right hand above his head kind of wags his finger at him almost scolding him uh-uh this is mine i'll take care of it you stay right there [Music] these styles [Music] this ace team does not lack for personality they've got some very identifiable characters on this club and with back-to-back appearances in post-season they're establishing a national identity you just saw with hassan's whether or not they're going to throw through if in fact mickey wilson does try and steal we're going to try and lead him right now they've done that last night once they did it consecutively twice in a row and got fernandez and what a base stealer does is he sees the first move of the lesson left lego heel and he thinks that the move is home there goes mookie goes bell swings on the first pitch maguire coming in everybody's there it's marked for the catch singles by mosby and wilson go to waste sedo watches his team strand too [Music] even when all of company b heads for the phone it's no problem for gail godfrey delta airline scale godfrey you all have to love it texas yes that is confirmed i got some friends i want to talk to you now just hold on a second thank you cincinnati ohio new york city hello louisiana albuquerque new mexico san jose california portland oregon montana you're all set thank you for calling bye-bye hi gail did you get many calls this afternoon [Music] during the past four years automotive engineers have worked hard trying to build a car as good as the honda accord they take it apart study it put it back together study it some more [Music] while they're busy doing that we'd like to introduce the new accord [Music] it goes with the boys [Music] battles on baseball nothing like getting the first base cars on women there's nothing like getting to first base it's a whole new ball game with hardball friday there's the guy who caught the conseco home run ball when you buy a seat in this section of the stadium you don't exactly come to the park expecting to come away with a souvenir steinbach fouls it back as we start the fourth terry was the mvp of the all-star game in the summer of 88 at cincinnati home run off dwight gooden and a sacrifice fly [Music] two-in-one steinbach held the ball on a bang bang tag play at the plate off a strong conseco throw with junior felix trying to score an extra run for toronto last night in his short big league career steinbach has taken more than his share of bumps and bruises you see he wears the face guard around the side of the helmet he's twice been hit by pitches in the face he also had a bone jarring collision with kirby puckett a couple of years ago kirby is like a human bowling ball coming in there at about 5 8 and 215 220 pounds and steinbach got the worst of it terry with a bullet to left there's a base hit three and one it's the term that mike flanagan and i guess jim powder coined when they were the orioles together it's a bp fastball batting practice fastball you can get away with it more in this park a spacious park we checked out with howie stark on the pr director and asked him and they have a tail of the tape in almost every park how far a home run goes not quite refined here and they said that consecutive's home run went about 480 john cerrodi up there gee i'm disappointed only 480. if you've seen how far would it kept that going when it came down that may be 480 to the point it landed [Music] phillips walked his first time down and low to him bobby valentine was alongside the toronto dugout when canseco connected and as soon as we get a little low here we'll go to bobby the ranger manager so he can sum up the reaction as the jays watched it sail into the upper deck i don't know if anybody's even reached that point in batting practice yeah conseco did thursday out here and maguire was trying came close and jose was up in that area [Music] i would love to see consequence swing of last journey of 42 home runs with the 87 baseball was a different baseball last year everybody admits in the game except the ball company i guess but i really believe that roger mara's record would have been in jeopardy because consequence the perfect swing all year very few slumps hard so many times he had 42 homers in 88 phillips back to flanagan he picks it off and that's the second line drive double play that flanagan has started let's go to bobby valentine the expressions were smiles and a lot of wows in the dugout but ernie wick came over to the drinking fountain and said i can measure that one in dollars and cents that was a 15 cab ride from home plate i mean that was a prodigious shot valent bobby valentine the ranger manager passy to the plate and that one sweeps in there for strike one rangers started this year tremendously they went 13 to their first 15 something like that got out of the box in good shape nolan ryan of course had an historic season for them achieving career strikeout number 5000 at the expense of ricky henderson of these oakland a's bobby valentine and tom grieve slowly building up to a pen and contender in a very tough division maybe the toughest in all a baseball ball you look at kevin brown the right hand what an army he has to get bobby witt back in geared and kind of see they think he should over 162 games but it's now baseball's best division oh yeah used to be the weakest of the four but the power has definitely shifted third strikeout for flanagan through four innings of work but three-nothing oakland [Music] the scene outside earlier today at the edge of the sky dome i think it was peter eustanov who said about the city of toronto it's like new york run by the swiss and what he meant by that was it had all the cultural advantages from the great city but it was safe it was clean well-run efficient it worked this may be one of the best vacation spots in on this continent great science center also the bolshoi ballet les miserables is currently playing phantom of the opera it's been around it's it is a marvelous city that expensive at times if you have to pay out of your own pocket but what the hell according to a recent report it's the most ethnically diverse city in the world about 600 000 italians pakistani section big english population they have something that they call caravan that goes on a couple of weeks where you get passports and eat all the ethnic food and the souvenirs go right into the neighborhoods right in this town caribana caribbean festival is here during the summer time and you can get any kind of food you go to local church or synagogue and get whatever food you want and souvenirs and the people are just wonderful how they would be to me let me drop that right now right now i drop it i tell you that's it it's really something when you come to a lovely city like toronto and you want to enjoy all the cultural advantages but uh you have to register in the hotel under an assumed name and when when you feel safer registering as salman rushdie you know you're really in trouble a ball in two strikes here's the guy who seems to be swinging the bat well off yesterday they're trying to get to start a rally you know dave duncan and it is nothing new but is not in the stat sheets dave duncan bowie and tony larussa believe in a catcher's era and that's in relation to hassey why is hassie catching welch they think together and larussa and duncan say hey look you can back it up with the numbers there's a man named craig wright who used to work for the texas rangers who's a big promoter of the catcher's era and this is the case i think welch hassey feeling good about each other two and two fernandez leading off in the bottom of the fourth goes the opposite way roller to the hole weiss can't get it it wouldn't have made any difference united got it but you had a chance to see what weiss has difficulty after the knee surgery bending down on the run even if he gets he's not going to throw tony fernandez out on this he's just lacking some mobility some say he's only 75 80 percent fernandez jump started them last night here's whit you know bob we've talked about the emotional level of the blue jays in these fans yesterday but it is hard to maintain an emotional level against the pitching staff like oakland knowing that if you're behind you get in the eighth and ninth and eckersley's down there so they want to generate some offense as quickly as they can not that eckersley is completely unhittable but very close the last two seasons that's what made gibson's roy hobbs performance in game one of the world series all the more remarkable yeah he was limping and it was heroic simply to drag himself into the game but the fact that he did it against eckersley made it even more of a twilight zone affair a healthy body gibson would not have had that much of a chance according to the numbers the way eckersley had pitched closing games all year long cedar gas has put the threat of a running game even down by three starting mookie in the last hilly he's got welsh thinking about tony fernandez he's going pitch out as he unloads he steals it anyway the advanced scouts do their job they put those stop watches on the pitcher's release time the catchers relief time pass he couldn't do a whole lot different he got the pitch on a good spot appeared to get rid of the ball quickly and if there's one thing that cedar gas may be doing more than jimmy williams it's running more but jimmy williams was mad at examining stadium you don't take chance of losing base runners and there's a difference here runs are harder to come by we're only in game four and there have already been 20 stolen bases in this series 11 by the a's a postseason record tying seven of those for ricky henderson nine steals for the blue jays as a team the previous playoff record for combined stolen bases in the entire series was 15 by the dodgers and mets in a seven game affair a year ago 20 already midway through game four it's almost like we're doing the finals against the cops [Applause] and the thing we've got to remember and dave duncan's aware of he they have used two left-handed pitchers thus far in the state championship series and neither one has done well larussa dispatches duncan to talk with [Applause] welsh [Applause] assuming you can hear what dave has to say we've had our status distance steve horn charting some pitches not only speeds location but as far as what the pitch is and i gotta ask him i don't think i've seen the hard curveball very much i mean it's been fastball a little safer ball some four calls but you wonder if the very tired arm he's talking about precludes him from throwing that hard curveball the pitch to gruber caught on and missed he saw the graphic a moment ago kelly with considerable amount of personal success head-to-head against welch singled and stole a base against him in the second inning for kelly his first hit of the series tying run at the plate nobody out in the fourth uber hit 18 over the fence during the regular year maddie lee on deck owen two the trainer barry weinberg in the foreground larussa seated calmly inwardly he's churning though but he's not as outwardly volatile as he once was lighter through the middle that's a hit fernandez stopped by mclaren at third base is loaded nobody else never stop at those personal histories which are now computerized earl weaver made it a big deal when he was doing it by hand keeping his own records kelly gruber now six for nine lifetime against welsh checking now with our kushner the bullpen to see who's ready and who's throwing well two years ago no balls two strikes against a pitch like welch kelly gruber could not have handled that pitch so he'll cut down a swing go up the middle he gets a base hit no balls two strikes maddie lee the other hand you could say own two should welch have wasted one up and in showing a bad breaking ball in contrast to gruber lee hasn't been able to touch welch in seven previous career at-bats i've all in a strike to him manny was robbed of it in his last timeout on a bouncer toward the middle a splendid spinning play by gallego at second base and at first base mark mcguire keeps jocking back and forth he did it yesterday and manny lee sneak going through the right side but here he is trying to keep gruber close the most aggressive base runner and quickest on this team one and two to manny junior felix awaiting his chance next the fourth inning was the charm last night for the jays tron has had been in strong position all four innings they trailed three nothing then and exploded for four trying to rally here but that won't help but lead down on strikes a big fourth ball and manually way out in front todd burns right-hander [Music] he's one of the reasons todd burns that they could let eric plunk and canary go there catarin he was down there and fits very well last year fernandez at third widow walked at second grouper who singled it first bases loaded one out funk and catarae of course went along with luis polonia to the yankees to bring ricky henderson back to oakland outside ball one ernie whitney the guy at second base you got to keep your eye on being a catcher it's maybe all decoys but he'll rub his right arm after the location is down and more often than not he's just trying to fool hasi not actually signaling a pitch that time he went to the left on does it mean a thing we don't know so many times why nerusa in this case have catchers as coaches because they can read those signs and with a satellite dish a center field camera you can only have so many series of patterns you can use before somebody figures them out that's why there's so many changes the 1-1 pitch two balls of a strike to junior felix one of his nine home runs this year was a grand slam and inside the park grand slam at fenway off bob stammer on two and one he doesn't get it felix hitting out of that exaggerated open stance when junior felix began having trouble second time through the league they weren't throwing a whole lot of strikes pound them inside hard off the plate and then bounce curve balls throw the off speed pitch i wonder if this won't be a bad fourth ball right here bouncing ball can they get two gallegos chasing gruber back flips safe run scores gallego did the only thing he could gruber stopped in his trash give it to kelly grove on that run if he keeps running he tags him they go to first base no run kelly pulls up and then starts retreating and he makes gallego take the extra three steps a brilliant try by gallego the call at first base by rick reed is safe gallego nearly turned it anyway as you say tony look at that little backhand flip but felix beats it to the bag either way he's going to make it if he throws the first they get him in a run on the run counts gallego did the wise thing kelly gruber was a little bit smarter so now widths at third felix at first mosby who is single twice at the plate will he start felix with that great speed for your felix great speed still learning to take a lead and at times you can have a problem getting picked off another factor is if they do start it the a's might not be hesitant to throw through with with the runner oh yeah at third base so it's not like they concede the base two out two on on the 1-0 pitch it's unusual there's some umpires who call it that you've got to make an attempt for fake with the hand and not just step there get a little different interpretations of this situation right here speaking of the umpires we'll present our state farm rules of the game feature during the seventh inning stretch timeout doug harvey handling the duties there it is again it's perfectly legal it's not a ball we talked about it before if that base dealer at first is keying on oh the left leg may be cracking the left knee you can get fooled because you crack it going to open point at least speed up as delivery that was close to a block it's a quick pitch when the jays had a man at third with one out in the first welch cranked it up and fan mcgriff then got bell to foul out and held the jays without scoring here with the bases loaded nobody out he struck out lee [Music] now the count two and one to mosby after lee's strikeout felix bounced one to second a run came across as they got gruber on the tag play between first and second but welch if he can retire mosby will have minimized the damage and the jays will come out of it with only one after having the bases loaded and nobody out mookie awaiting his chance if mosby can prolong the inning he goes on two and one and it's fouled off overall this has been a problem for the blue jays i mean they've had difficulty getting base runners over the last three weeks to the month but when they do hitting with runners in scrolling position seeing a little bit of it today already through the first four innings and then just one man it seems to be a team thing welch backs off now here it comes and he struck him out with the fourth ball two strikeouts in the inning and we're back after these messages from your local station the challenger he surprised the champ early with a vicious left hook in the second round the champion down the stretch he found his range landing blinding combinations the difference was slight the decision was debatable tony lopez battles john john molina a rematch live on nbc sports world mr smith the proposal in fact simply communications one name stands out for a new level of performance and reliability and now the highest image quality available canon knows that for every kind of companies of the prudential come to the prudential and build your future on the rock when you show the opposition your fastball and the curve's not working you go to something else a great fourth ball you saw the downward action and you talk about a perfect spot brilliant replays guys john gonzalez our director ken edmonson our producer weren't those pretty shots not from the blue jay perspective gallego well when it gets tough you can give in or you can get nasty welch got nasty to come out of that with only one has to be deflating for toronto bases loaded nobody out first three on single a walk by wit gruber no ball two strike base hit [Music] not just deflating to the toronto blue jays but see if you can hear any of this crowd the variations in the noise levels truly have been extreme seiko and henderson homart that little device was about at zero the place was hushed yeah but in fact you got to turn it completely off just get lost you're just trying to make my life even more difficult gallego with a base hit flanigan chase speed on a curveball he was ahead in the count one and two balls stayed upstairs hegel goes with it see now in this situation with weiss up if tony larussa doesn't try and sacrifice him to second base weiss for the knee problem batting from the right side might try and tack a run on here and get him in scrolling position for ricky henderson twice doubled inside the bag at third his first time flanigan's trying to find out hit-and-run button run straight bunt somebody on the bench trying to read both the hitter gallego when they throw over and the base runner weiss at the plate had a good playoff last year in the sweep of the red sox he went 5-15 against boston and won game two with a two out single off lee smith in the ninth at fenway he squares pulls back takes a strike ordinarily in that kind of situation you if you're sure the butt you're gonna throw that high fast ball trying to get the pop-up but perhaps flanagan and whip not sure so they'll go breaking ball first pitch to weiss d01 punts it out in front of the plate flanagan has it doesn't even look at second takes the throw to lee covering successful sacrifice he is a very fundamentally sound player and you just saw that part of it talking about quick feet gallegos that's why they're such a good double play combination when they are both healthy diego going hard not sure where the ball is going to go and hit the base awfully hard i don't know if that was his left ankle that hit the anchor bag and twisted back a little bit henderson fly to center and then hit one over mosby's head and over the fence and center for a home run manny lee continues to jockey at second base with the runner gallego down there [Music] a drive to left if it's high enough and fair it's gone yeah it qualified on both counts like it landed right on the top of the fence just inside the screen a breaking ball down and in a blur can you imagine how many ways this guy can beat you game one and two great speed a record and then he does this today jay's fans didn't like to see him racing they like him even less trotting billy martin's right first best lead offender of all time we've alluded to it over the years let's see where ernie whit was gonna grab that ball down and maybe out of the strike zone inside ricky not the certain stays in the ballpark and it's the padding it was too close to give it that easy attract well it stays in he might have been elder singer became a mood point not from cedar gasket he's stolen as many as 130 he's hit as many as 28 home runs in a season 24 on another occasion the thing about him is the beating that he takes he was accused in new york of not hustling at all times and getting out of the lineup when you figure the duress he is under and we've seen it just this series how they throw at him or come close but ricky gets another home run and we'll be back for the pitching change it has arrived good morning mr graves this is the all-new four-door cutless supreme your mission is to show the world that is causing an automotive revolution its sleek look and response and performance make it a super power among world-class cars oh lets doctors see inside even the littlest hearts to provide the treatment that saves lives this kind of innovation is typical of siemens where our 23 coast-to-coast research and development centers for electronics and electrical engineering are helping to take steps toward a better tomorrow we are siemens hi i'm rick moranis i don't have much time to say this so listen closely because i'm almost out of time oh i'm hosting saturday night live with ricky lee jones this saturday night three oakland homers put that glum expression on mike flanagan's face and here's the one that drove him from the game the second of the day by ricky henderson just high enough just fair and just awful for flanagan so here's dwayne ward bass brothers are back on what a combination of waves if you look at ward stats you can be erratic we've told you before it was very hard with a good sinker ball sometimes a great slider overhand curve he's in the strike zone around it he can be as tough as any right-handed reliever in this game you just can't grab it put versatility in this offense the oakland athletics got crossed up sliding out for a breaking ball and the ball came close to handcuffing the a's lead 5-1 as they bat here in the fifth they've had seven hits but three of them are homers the jays have six hits but haven't capitalized fully on a couple of good opportunities who hit maybe the longest homer in the short history of this building his last time up will be next i think according to how he started 443 was the longest catalog to this point by freddie mcgriff so about 480 got to this point as you go around the league already and they start pointing to places where jose hit one texas minnesota he's gonna be like mantle before he finishes we're still talking about some of the parks still there where mickey played with the mick get one three-two pitch hit hard and krueger makes a good play he's a tremendous all-around athlete they can use him in the outfield he's become a fixture now at third base but he can do a little bit of everything the air total is deceptive that he had this year he played hurt he played the outfield and that tournament look at that jose conseco bolt again yes we would so gentlemen in the truck rolling they said they would then they didn't here's the pitch swinging a miss here it comes flanagan tried to get the ball inside that is one way one place for conseco i think is changed he got two base hits on balls in under his fist yesterday and that was in maybe not in as far as mike flanagan wanted it but he has learned to adjust merv wreckman helped him bob watson who's now with houston as an executive help canseco a lot especially in two strike situations and handling that ball in there you can't throw it by him too often remember what he did to roger clemens one weekend we saw and roger got a 90-plus fastball in there he took it into the screen over the monster at fenway verve bretton the hitting coach for the a's was on those three straight baltimore pennant winners 69 70 and 71 had a couple of years hitting over 300 good right-handed bat three and one now the count to jose they've shifted on him with the second baseman manny lee on the third base side of the bag and you play as deeply as you possibly can for jose in the infield and the outfield the infield especially when you're on the turf these hard ground balls are that tops and each align count goes full what's the longest home run you ever saw here mantles obviously start talking detroit over the right field roof a couple of billy heft the left-hander dead center field right left center struck him out but the a's scored twice more and chased flanagan in the fifth [Music] we cannot overcome their superior forces only a miracle can save us now [Music] after spuds clears the air of ninja warfare he's rewarded with bud light everything else is just a light still he has a [Music] girlfriend [Music] never because there are no unimportant parts i'm telling you she stole my house just like that dorothy thompson century 21. they listened to me sir they knew what i wanted century 21 yeah my broker sold my house and i wasn't even in town the century 21 system sells more homes than anybody else because we have more experience than anybody else but don't take our word for it ask [Music] [Music] so we really doing this we're gonna have a long time together oh i'm late i gotta go talk to you later [Music] this is why allstate gives a 10 discount for cars with anti-lock brakes we're the only major insurance company that does call allstate he's an fbi agent who views justice in terms of black and white on friday he shows his true colors mancuso fbi premiering friday [Music] a youngster working the streets out here perhaps unaware of what's going on inside which is not good news the bass brothers indeed let's take a look at that again henderson the tiniest of the group but that is a compact and powerful 190 pounds on that 5 foot 10 inch frame [Music] mookie wilson here in the last half of the fifth they're doing it without parker today who switched from the green color coordinated bubble gum to the standard variety once he got to toronto breaking ball hit to left here's ricky bob welch has made pitches when he's had to get the lead off hit around in the first he gets to second three shots at him you don't get him home two outs two line drives fernandez and witness second ruber on steal gallego makes an outstanding play runner on second a couple more on to the third and the bases on the fourth and when he's had to have the plays or make the pitches he's done it the blue jays still have time but for the eighth and ninth in oakland athletics have eckersley mcgriff over two today struck out fly to center an mvp candidate until a september slump he'll still finish in the top ten of course maybe even in the top five but it's very doubtful that he'll win the award which he had a good shot at had he had a big september center field dave henderson in between the two baseball games today the ibf junior lightweight championship rematch lopez against molina he had a real knockdown drag out several months ago lopez won it but molina had him down and bob trumpy grabs the microphone and relief of marv albert who's working the pregame shows on the playoffs and trump will call the blow by blow with the fight doctor here's a curve in for a strike with george bell trump's not real experience in fights but i know he's done sumo wrestling with you over in tokyo what an affair that was line to left ricky comes in can't handle it nice skirts out of his glove most left fielders are coming to this ballpark at one time or another because of the huge light banks have trouble with the lights and henderson did get an excellent jump george bell's won right now i'm sure you say to mcguire i know what he's going through i go through it 81 games out of the year or will next year and he just switched a little bit the ball may have gotten in the lights and hits his glove and bounds away we haven't seen a ruling yet hit or error and now it goes up on the board e7 and that's what the fans here wanted they wanted something to go wrong for ricky henderson well didn't go far enough away had george bell run all the way it's one of those where you play a long season you hit it hard you see the ball hit the guy's blood you think he's got it and it only went five six feet away he wouldn't have made it to second base anymore fernandez lined hard to the box and singled to the opposite field and earlier in the season george bell might have gotten booed by that but he's become such a big favorite here and we'll show you how fickle fans are the their capricious nature before he was all but getting boot out of this ballpark exhibition stadium he was getting all the blame for the team not playing well i mean it was a very easy target being the mvp and carrying the ball club then when the team started winning boy you talking about people jumping on george's and the team bandwagon whoa everybody changed welch with a 5-1 lead as he works with a man on and two outs here in the last half of the fifth he likes storm davis last night's open starter through only one complete game during the regular season and 33 starts so it's likely they'll go to the pen hassi throws in behind bell who skips back easily you know the oakland staff and all the credit tony larussa gives to dave duncan even when they don't have their good stuff they somehow find a way throughout this team i haven't seen welch's good turbo which can be a devastating pitch but he somehow pitches out of trouble prevents the beginning saves you the run and the defensive position helps that [Music] but i think there's something to that pitching coach one trip out by duncan in this game what he said all the conferences in the dugout i think he's going to be featured over the george will book coming out really antonio but tony talks glowingly about duncan fernandez lofts it harmlessly to left center field and ricky gives way to dave henderson who makes the catch no harm done as far as welch is concerned in the fifth twice a year your fuji retailer takes inventory which means he must count every goodyear high performance all season steel belted and light truck radial in stock and twice a year he reaches the same conclusion it's better to sell them than it is to count them so he's clearing them out with drastically reduced prices on hundreds of quality goodyear radials during goodyear's inventory clearance sale through october 14th at participating goodyear retailers they're already here dinosaur stamps they're exciting they're history they're at your post office now now do you believe me [Music] my uncle roy t cashman was killed when i was 11 years old it had a lot to do with me wanting to become a volunteer fireman in the fire department we have a lot of trust in each other because our lives are in each other's hands good morning neil how you doing i've been in a burning house and it's a feeling i'll never forget many of these firefighters trust neil cashion with their life insurance i think neal got in the fire department because the red lights and the sirens he's been with new york life a long time and with the fire department even longer if he's in the building with you don't have to worry about him leaving on him new york life the company you keep [Music] got a cold gotta get alka-seltzer plus cold medicine it works it's fast alka seltzer plus now this works fast friday your summer continues [Music] baywatch returns fighting dave duncan seated alongside his skipper tony larussa they joined forces in the early 80s with the white sox took them to the division title in 1983 they had brit burns they had the 220 game winners boyd and dotson they had a bullpen by committee though in those days i think dennis lamp led them with 14 or 15 saves here they've got eckersley as the closer all kinds of depth a lot of oakland ties in this managerial coaching staff duncan of course tommy reynolds on the staff of bench coach well tony larussa was fired by the white sox on june 19th 1986 and was out of work exactly 18 days on july 7th he was the a's manager and he brought duncan back with him renee lachman turns the third base coach arusa spent about 15 16 years as a player about 150 60 games or so in the major leagues maguire goes down on three pitches so ward fan conseco to end the fifth and maguire now to start the sixth there's latch in the third base coaches box among those apparently under consideration for the cleveland managerial opening kept hearing the name john mcnamara fouled off by steinbach and it just shows you how the baseball fates endlessly crisscross lachman was mcnamara's third base coach for the red sox in 1986. he saw all the glory with the dave henderson home run now sharing the same clubhouse with dave in oakland so all the glory of the playoff comeback and all the agony is the world series slipped away still has the same battle habits shooter backer big saw that red man surgeon general says no latch yeah george brett has stopped so many letters coming into him incidence of oral cancer is incredible proven so much for the medical report now the 2-1 pitch dr coop told me all about it before he retired i wonder if see everett coop sits around in that uniform even at home [Music] hard sinker ball is steinbach's rear foot gave way don't you wish you could just wear epaulettes all day long certainly even when sitting at home reading the newspaper you don't have to worry i have to salute you every time i come in anyway well it matters the natural order of things three and two of course the exact nature of the salute varies depending upon your mood philip sondeck went with the sign ward with the pitch and he bounces it up there ball four there is nobody more difficult to catch on this toronto blue jays staff maybe in the american league it's a very effective pitch with two strikes from ward as that curveball in the dirt you get all battered and bruised ernie whit comes out after a few innings with ward and you can have bruises all over your arms he's also got a fastball that runs all over the place ward trying to keep it at least reasonably close to give his mates a chance to rally they trail 5-1 here top of the sixth one-on-one out in phillips takes outside he's walked and lined hard into a double play although their offense has been stagnant the blue jays well we saw him on that saturday come from behind on dave johnston after a brilliant game the jays were involved a lot of extra inning games the last few weeks of the season they think it made him tougher for his postseason pressure but the big thing they've got going for them defensively and their pitching staff has been the skydome the bad thing they've got going against them is also the sky dome because it's harder to score for them in this park than it was in exhibition stadium here's ward's 1-0 pitch fouled off you know ordinarily you'd say when a team has as much success as toronto has had this year regardless of what happens the rest of the way in this playoff that they parlay it into increased attendance the next year but even had the jays not won the division they could scarcely have sold more tickets for next year than they already have they've had applications for what about 40 000 season tickets and the place only holds 50. i think it's an indication of the way the sky boxes went i don't know how long a year or so before this place opened they were all sold and they are expensive they're going to take long-term 10-year leases the enthusiasm for baseball people forget the hair they're the sky domes hundred thousand two hundred thousand unfurnished doesn't count tickets you've gotta buy from every event you're in two million plus before you get a seat but when you look at the tradition of baseball in canada you know toronto franchise and triple a ball in the international league the runner going phillips reaches out and fouls it away montreal yeah babe ruth hit his first professional home run in toronto playing for the providence club yep i think might be wrong but i think the ballpark was called hanlon park where he hit it in 1915 you know last year i think in the baseball museum here somebody walked off of that baseball apparently and didn't know its value and i don't think they ever got it back but supposedly threw it in the lake what yep sacrilege phillips down on strikes ward has banned three of the last four with a walk mixed in we talked about mike moore's stuff being nasty before game two of the league championship series and that's what you're looking at with ward he's had some arm problems in his career in the last year he became the closer for this ball club it's a lot of innings after the all-star break last year then struggled this spring couldn't throw strikes cassie steps up lines it to right base hit steinbach content to stop at second base there's a call play by tony fernandez getting the cutoff position between second and third again scotty reports not a new play but the scouts alerted steinbach that tony fernandez if you see him he'll be between second and third for cutoff and then he'll sneak in and as soon as the right fielder felix in this case sees him he throws for the second baseman many times he'll throw it right for the runner's head if he circles the bag and if the runner gets down to get out of the way tony fernandez got him dead the little subtleties of this game that you recall from your days growing up watching you and bobby richardson around the keystone liner right back at ward we have four of those games in an act of self-preservation he clutches it and puts an end to the top of the sixth it's not just a car it's your freedom tune up you can't do it with a screwdriver and diamond light anymore you know it's all look the same to the naked eye when you change a plug you can actually see the difference on the screen we always recommend ac spark plugs and wires the kind this car came with gm training i'd be lost and here without it see mr goodrich wherever you see these signs good people good parts now a good price too check it out nearly one third of the smoke detectors in american homes are not working because of dead or missing batteries in a fire that'd be worthless that's why first alert created the new light test smoke detector no smoke detector you can buy is easier to test you don't even have to stand up just wave a flashlight at the gold button and you know it's working the new light test smoke detector only first alert gives you this extra protection i've tried it now i believe it denorex tingles tells me it's doing more head and shoulders no tingle both have dandruff medicine but dendrx adds both an extra anti-itch medicine and conditioner too goodbye head and shoulders hello denirex you ever run up against the tough sinus cold as tough as it gets maximum strength grip stand is tougher to sweep away congestion pressure and pain and it will make you drowsy when you can't call in sick call on dristan it's all right i've got my card i like it [Music] [Music] i like my mci bob costa's back along with tony kubak at the sky dome ernie witt kelly gruber manny lee the scheduled hitters in the last half of the six you know cedaw gaston hasn't gone to his bench once in this series he's used different people as starters he used lee and felix last night and today and they hadn't played in the first two games but he has not used a pinch hitter nor a pinch runner well you've got four switch hitters and mosby hits against everybody hits from the left side or has been and mozzili struggle if you wanted to use him for somebody if they bring a left-hander in you would see a borders for a width there's a pattern most of the year ernie takes high and away we were discussing toronto's possibilities for breaking the all-time attendance record in cedaw gaston's first full year as the manager in 1990 the record is in the vicinity of 3.6 million by the dodgers who have drawn over 3 million several times they didn't get into this building until june 5th and they still broke the all-time american league attendance record which was only a year old by the twins who capitalized on their world series success of 87 to go just over 3 million you know when you said that about cedar gaston you made it sound as if it's a given there have been various things written in this area that some may feel hey look no matter how far the team goes he may just think he'd rather stay as a hitting instructor and he'd be tougher cedar to pick up well what do you pass the money you know he was reticent as you said to take the job for whatever reasons he has his family here lives in this area all year long nobody else the blue jays does increase the amount of money obviously blue jays don't negotiate their contracts and one-year deals until after it's all over i don't know if sido's had the time especially now with post-season play and the pressure's involved and his wife has been alex seems to be doing volcano don't even think of it he's thinking of the present and maybe when it's all over he's going to sit down and evaluate with his wife and see what he's going to do done such a good job you know you think he's going to be back but he's his own man a lot of waller alston the 2-2 pitch to ernie witt a called strike three on the inside edge well there's no doubt that ceto doesn't have a burning desire to manage like some people do they had to talk him into it but considering their recent success i'd be shocked if they couldn't convince him to come back you talk about hitting a target from center field now the location on the inner edge from up top right where hassey's set down gruber up in tight to him maybe we can get that graphic back up on the screen about the all-time top attendances as we move along here this could be his third hit henderson coming in lets it fall in front of him he had no play gruber hitless in the series until today has three singles and a stolen base you had a chance right there to see him with ernie wick getting called inside a left-handed hitter how well the oakland staff under duncan uses both sides of the play with their fastball trying to jam kelly didn't get a hat but he threw the ball right where he wanted to in on his fifth and that was going from strikeout about 20 inches on the other side of the plate width then the gruber he's changing that release point for a lot of pictures that's not easy he ran the fastball in on gruber he did shatter his bat maybe because he was up a little bit it had the loft down it might have been a ground ball and a ball to manny lee okay let's take a quick look at those attendance figures the dodgers of 82 with the record they came close in 83 but look at the jays almost 3.4 and next year they're in the sky dome all season long with all those season tickets already in hand the national league calculates attendance differently than the american league in the american league the official figure is tickets sold in the national league it's turnstile count so if a team fades from the pennant race late in the year and people don't use the tickets it hurts the final attendance figure that's why the blue jays have such a great chance to set the all-time mark because they've got so many sold in advance then if they stay in the race and play exciting ball it's a bonus on top of it they could approach remarkable as it sounds four million which is close to a sellout every game but they played 55 games in here not counting postseason play well three balls and a strike now to manny lee with felix on deck you know i asked how he started and some of the executive the president paul beaston they said what about hockey when hockey's going down in the spring won't you lose attention no he said not only is the team going to be competitive again but the population base right here and this is such an attraction this sky dome people flock through this thing when it's unoccupied no baseball game going on just to see it lee trying to distract welch but bob gets it in there full count in a strange and almost entirely opposite way the sky dome is an attraction in and of itself the way wrigley field is even when the cubs aren't successful people come to see them play just to be at wrigley fowled off the same is true here at least for a while how long it'll last once the novelty wears off is hard to say but for a while people are coming here almost as much to be in the sky dome as to watch the blue james it's quite a sight when it's there's paul beeston the president given that title by mr peter hardy annie hardy who is the ceo of the blue jays during last offseason pat gillick the general manager i guess he may be entitled to the executive vice president but he makes all the deals and paul beast in charge of the finances three paul beast and trademarks and evidence there no socks sunglasses and a cigar fly ball left field ricky henderson welch was ahead on the count or behind i should say three and one battled back and eventually got manny lee you know pat gillick in a white shirt behind the glass he played for earl weaver learned a lot of baseball in the minor leagues a left-handed pitcher some say he had a great move they're the best in fact they met his mother one day down in arlington texas area and she said he had to have a good move what he would do is he'd walk people purposely and then pick him up otherwise he'd hit doubles and home runs off she has a great sense of humor obviously there's nothing quite like it when your mother rips you as sarcastically as possible snide remarks from the home front you know you have no friends at all junior felix bidding for an extra base hit and it's off the fence on a fly here comes gruber being waved home with the blue jays second run on an rbi double from junior felix he's got both runs driven home for toronto the first one scored on his force play grounder some teams early out had underestimated the power of junior felix because they hear about his great running speed even that ricky henderson playing deeper than he was that ball's going to get over his head 170 pound guy not gruber who's going to score as mclaren sees him go by then watches felix to make sure he doesn't do something foolish with two outs he held him at second base you think of the guy 165 or 70 like felix great runner well what the heck he didn't have a whole lot of power we've got two guys now this game have shown to be different or ricky henderson doesn't go 195. well larussa does not give up on people easily well he needs that left hander against his club sooner or later to get some important left-hand hitters out mcgriff and witt and others honeycutt hasn't gotten anybody out in two appearances in the series but larussa goes right back to him here welch leaves after five and two thirds if honeycutt and his possible successors can keep things in order bob would qualify for the victory the a's leading 5-2 i thought wells did a good job with what did not appear to be his best stuff he threw some good fastball some fourth balls when you needed him but we didn't see the good curve ball so honeycutt's going to give her a shot now and come up against mosby and then turn mookie wilson around sports world tony lopez versus john john molina next i wish i could do marvel he's marvin mars on his way to west coast barb will be a candlestick can you do this like another fight you wouldn't want to lead me to the brink of trouble or embarrassment you would not get in trouble with marv albert now then vin scully sue me as well i hope he is and tom saver will be giving you that game for san francisco this fight will come from not marv albert no from bob trumpy okay with uh dr ferdi pacheco it's a good outing for welch he may do with what he had and as we said he located the ball well when he had to came up with some big fork balls you got a guy like that who is your fourth starter in a short series seven games can you imagine what the opposition is up against stuart moore storm davis and then welch you saw the sorry arithmetic for honeycutt welch heading down the runway three hits all singles three walks he's given up three earned runs in the series facing just six batters you know honeycutt's had to pitch out of different roles this year don't know if that's affecting him because when eckersley went down he became the closer did an outstanding job sometimes can pitch in middle relief pitches a setup man so he has had to push himself emotionally more this year with all the injuries they've had to their pitching staff the big one eckersley of course the closer emotionally you wonder if honeycutt didn't get drained because they're i mean middle relief is no picnic but when you're coming into the extreme pressure having to finish off games and hold leads where you've got so many good offensive players out you wonder if emotionally he's not drained but tony larouche is throwing right back out there after two starts that have been a little bit rocky ricky's getting along very well with the fans out in left field he thrives on this sort of thing the fans taught him he just smiles right back he loves being the center of attention and some of this not all of it because occasionally you get the hot head who allows sports to get out of perspective but much of this is just like dudley do ride against snidely whiplash it's a cartoon it's a it's a drama that's all done in good nature he's the hero at home he's the villain on the road and either way the spotlight falls on him and he doesn't mind moe's being a lot of big base hits and a big bunt late in the season even though he's had it off here still see his double flying off the wall left center field on that final weekend against baltimore won the friday game in extra innings pushed the orioles to the brink of elimination and the jays eliminated them the next day mosby takes a strike he hits just 221 for the year as tony had an off-season for him he's put up big numbers in the past he won't turn 30 for another month or so so he's still in what should be the time of his career he's a free agent after this season but they don't resign him two-thirds of what was dubbed the best outfield in baseball will be gone only bell will remain they traded barfield and mosby's on the bubble right now he turns around and bunts and it goes foul remember the early part of this decade the a's had what was proclaimed baseball's best outfield with ricky henderson left tony armas with 40 home run capability in right and dwayne murphy a superb defensive centerfielder in between them but these things come and go quickly in modern baseball it's hard to keep a team together for a long period of time mosby thought with one strike he had phillips and phillips was looking for a bunt two outs a man on second base mosby thinking maybe get a first and third if he beat it out and then get mookie wilson up representing the time run he was mad at himself because he didn't get it down he a lot of time changes now with two strikes folks can stay back of course honey cut to mosby one and two using a little bit different kind of fastball basically honeycutt with a good curve and then with the seam syncer ball that may have been running out of the strike zone so it looked like you at least two pitches to mosby went with the seams with a harder fastball upstairs trying something different back to the sinker you know kurt young who started for them and did a good job at the end of last year at times this year still down to the bullpen he's had some trouble getting left-handed hitters out so matt young comes in yesterday the honeycutt for the third time can't throw strikes left-handed hitters didn't do you any good he hasn't had a look at arab aces stewart and steve tomorrow in game five mosby slices one foul there's matt young former mariner and dodger left-hander made a brief appearance last night kurt young is a pure oakland farm system product and the only man in their starting rotation who came up through their system is a contrast between the two pitching staffs in that respect the front four with young kurt young as the fifth starter the front four for oakland are all imports stewart davis welch all came from other organizations that's going to get out of play it appears mike moore the fourth coming over from seattle as a free agent lloyd mosby knows there's more foul territory here than exhibition stadium and he is getting a little body english to keep going into the seats that's what you see when you're in the respective dugouts of these two teams the bullpens can't see each other the players are up in bleachers left and right center field watching the game they've not yet cut plexiglass holes for plexiglas so they can sit down and feel level the one-two pitch oh how do you think two balls and two strikes wow just to finish up the thought procedural gaston and al whidmar in that very productive farm system pat gillick heads up for the blue jays only today's starter flanagan is an import all the others steve stottlemeyer key cerruti their fifth starter sent to the bullpen for the playoffs all came up purely as blue jays honeycutt the former university of tennessee all-american misses and the count is full honeycutt actually made all-american teams as a first baseman his senior year with the volunteers i find that's true of a lot of pitchers in the big leagues who are outfielders or first baseman as collegiate players primarily because they were such good all-round athletes they could do both at that level being made purely pitchers as professionals how about dave steve yep steve at southern illinois outfielder and pitcher and pike's feeling a little small for honeycutt he struggled with his control two consecutive times and he walks in oh boy that was close lloyd mosby took two of the three last pitches he took were so so close honeycutt still cannot believe it the one before this was probably low that was bad steinbach tries to pick it up so daryl cousins behind the plate right on it looking over the shoulder and hassle all of a sudden now mookie wilson is the tying run from the right side he hit two home runs in his two months in a toronto uniform after coming over from the national league better hit her left handed than right ordinarily the jays as you see just one for 10 with men in scoring position trailing here five to two mookie with a bouncer to short it comes up nicely for weiss the flip to gallego for the force and they leave too they do get a run on the double the left center by junior felix and we're back after this from your local station the challenger he surprised the champ early with a vicious left hook in the second round the champion down the stretch he found his range landing blinding combinations the difference was slight the decision was debatable tony you to see why nobody's winning like the heartbeat of america and by mr goodrich mr goodwrench knows it's not just a car it's your freedom [Music] as we go to the seventh let's take a look inside the roof room this is like uh the place where the great and powerful oz sits controlling everything behind the scenes manipulating those levers and that's how they open and close the dome they can do it in just about what 22 25 minutes happened to be here when rich garcia was behind home plate the dome was open and started to rain weiss hits one well to right center field but mosby gets back and makes the catch as ricky henderson leaves the on deck circle and heads for the plate let's review what he's done as the dominant figure in the series to this point [Music] with his legs through the first three games seven steals tying the postseason series record held by lou brock who did it in world series play and today a couple of home runs a boomer to dead center field and then a wicked line drive that just got over the fence right down the line and left haven't been too many of it three home runs in one league championship series game it's only happened twice bob robertson the big right-handed hitting first baseman for the pirates in the 71 playoffs against the giants bucks went on to win the world championship that year beating the orioles in the series rolling to short fernandez can't waste any time getting rid of it and he cuts ricky down and the second time for a three home run game in the lcs it was george brett at yankee stadium in 1978 all three of them off catfish hunter a lot hitters don't like the bat against if you're right-handed against dwayne ward tailgate flies his wicked stuff some of the red sox players on the right side they say nobody on the right side do they despise getting into this guy spies more because he looks at you kind of funny out of the turkey jerky delivery he does pitch inside a lot sometimes not on purpose dave henderson blast one to left center field mosby on the dead run it's one bounce against the fence and a two out double for dave i don't think dave henderson can believe this ball carried that far i mean we've seen some long home runs today there are some days where the ball will shoot off the bat look like it's going to carry and then it dies and the deep alleys are center field i mean no no park would have held for sake was it and henderson hit that ball at the end of the bat almost short off the wall shift design again in the infield for consecutive flight out sent a 480 foot home run to the upper deck and left in the third and then struck out when you asked me the last time kutsega was up among the longest home runs i was just going to get to the one mickey hit mickey mouse yankee stadium off billy fisher i don't think they ever estimated the distance i did say 660 feet officially in the guinness book of rose record the one making it in detroit i guess that's official in guinness now and i don't know what the one with yankees stayed in the right 660. they said you betcha 660. yes sir that's what the guinness book said landed on top of a lumber yard beyond the right field fence landed on a truck and then the truck drove away and that wound up 660 feet away no sir guy saw it hip i yield to no man in my admiration for mickey mantle at 660. authenticated through the box fernandez i should say maddie lee couldn't get it and henderson comes in with the sixth run you you used to be able to pitch that guy inside i mean he jolted one inside the 480 you alluded to a while ago they try and get him inside again and he hits it up the middle he almost looked like he was gonna try and hit the ball through the right side because it was wide open just to get the rbi he was trying to hit it away from the shift got it right up the middle you have to be strong to be able to do that with a pitch bad under your fists you see a guy moving to his left on a ball hit up the middle and automatically you think it's the short stop but with the shift on that ball was hit very nearly right through the middle and yet to the left of the second baseman manny lee who was positioned behind second base he is becoming a very smart hitter not a wild swinger as he was his first year consecutive almost every department has gotten his game under control we saw the great throw yesterday it was last year he stole the 40 bases mcguire a wicked shot to right center field conseco around second headed for third as felix cuts it off maguire is content with a single he's two for four [Music] we saw maguire go inside out again with not a complete shift but manny lee up the middle conseco just did it before that to get an rbi [Music] these are all those carryovers from the late charlie lau and merv rehman has a lot of his theories also look at ernie wick they tie him up inside he can't get the hands out you can see his arms are all but pinned to his body they say boy that's a perfect pitch except for one thing you got one of the strongest guys in the game if not the strongest steinbach one for two with a walk ward from the stretch inside tony larussa says he takes an almost personal stake in jose canseco's ultimate place in baseball history obviously he's got a direct selfish interest in seeing conseco perform as well as possible as long as larussa manages the a's to help them toward penance bouncing ball to short fernandez backhands quick flip to manny lee at second for the force play to end the inning the a settle for one and will continue with larussa about conseco when we come back rules of the game brought to you by state farm insurance like a good neighbor's state farm is there hi folks doug harvey glad to be back with you for the league championship series here's what we've got today something fairly simple batter bats the ball it goes down definitely foul down the first base line comes back in fair fairly simple a lot of people don't know it what are we going to call it be back in a minute let you know when david and lisa edmondson needed life insurance they came to see me i'm kent spearman their state farm agent i help the edmondsons put together a life insurance plan that works for them and their budget and i stay in touch as their needs grow and change because that plan has to work for their children rachel and travis too if you want life insurance that works for you get an agent who works for you get yourself a state farm agent hi folks remember what we had now a battered ball going down the line foul suddenly coming in fair if it goes down there and does not hit anything foreign to the ground comes back in fair before it crosses the bag we've got a fair ball we've got major league ball players that don't know this one the rule is 2.00 you're gonna have to look it up that's today's edition of rules of the game brought to you by state farm insurance like a good neighbor state farm is there all week long mike ryan is a buttoned up by the numbers straight ahead type of guy but on the weekend mike likes to get into his quad four chevy beretta gtz find a twisty road and put it all behind him [Music] nobody's winning like the heartbeat of america [Music] mancuso loves his work you got the best job in the world you get to defend the constitution and you get paid for it thank you so fbi friday when larussa speaks of penseco he's not overstating for effect when he says that this guy can be more than an all-star more than just a hall of famer if there's such a thing as just barely making the hall of fame he can possibly be one of the 15 or 20 greatest players who's ever played and larussa takes a personal stake in conseco's ultimate niche in the history of baseball mcgriff swinging and missing as hunnicutt goes to work in the last of the seventh the way tony puts it he says look in the natural course of things if he doesn't work if he doesn't concentrate as hard as he's capable of if he doesn't devote himself fully to baseball he is still going to hit 30 home runs bat around 280 drive in close to 100 runs for six or seven years in a row on natural talent alone but if he applies himself and if he's lucky enough to avoid serious injury and comes close to maximizing his potential then we're talking about one of the greatest ever and it's larussa's job to make sure he doesn't go off the spool somewhere between now and then he's only 25 it took a lot of years and larussa insists which every manager should some don't that your practice habits are good but every time you take the field you play the game right the ability will take over play it hard and play it right and that's one of tony lewis's strongest who's called out he's looking for curveball know i would think that hat with honeycutt having struggled is better today of course you can see that he still might want to get eckersley in there for an inning or so finish this game off chester well i don't after honeycutt struck him out mcgriff is now over four he's two for 16 in the series he struck out twice today here's bell 0 for 3 officially reached on an error as last time up when ricky henderson dropped his liner the left-hander cerruti getting ready in the toronto band a moment ago you saw larussa on the bench making a notation on his scorecard after mcgriff struck out he has every line-up card of every game he's managed since 1986. he didn't keep them all from his years with the white sox but he has all the oakland scorecards and he uses those notations and personal observations to supplement the scouting reports and the computerized sheets he gets he's got a pretty good background for baseball al lopez down to the tamper area eboor city was a close friend of tony's father and tony used to run the scoreboard semi-pro games down i think he got two and a half bucks a day he just prayed for those double headers when he made five hang those numbers up by hand so baseball is in his blood and got the law degree raleigh heeman gave him the chance to manage came up from knoxville double a ball [Music] they're asking for all kinds of appeals and there's a lot of tolerance from the benches going on now george bell wants to take a look at the baseball that hit the ground in case there's a little scuff mark on it some say hunnicutt doesn't have to have the baseball hit the ground get a scuff mark on well he was caught red-handed with the evidence a few years back when pitching for texas they found a thumbtack in his glove tony phillips kind of a tough hop but he's equal to it bell is over four's he goes out five to three and up comes tony fernandez you know you wonder in a short series like this how far emotion could take you we saw it last night with the blue jays obviously tony fernandez and everybody else so charged up as the open ball club goes by ricky henderson out west and oakland all of a sudden you get a decent pitch game against you you're gonna get that all the time from the oakland staff and they squelch a couple rallies and you get knocked down again and how many times can you keep cutting back up especially when your offense basically has been stagnant for weeks the blue jays because they don't have a high on base percentage they don't take a lot of base on balls and you like the base on balls to be taken to keep things going 6-2 oakland here last of the seventh tony fernandez with a drive to dead center here's dave henderson going back look at this one carrie over his head and it bounces against the 400 foot sign in straight away center field on two out double what is it carrying today and yes yesterday was carrying down the lines although felix hit him on the right center field last night and hit the fence henderson playing very shallow he thinks he's got a beat on it and about two inches from the webbing you got the kind of lead they have four runs you can take a couple chances and worth two outs and plays fernando's shallower gets burned deep dave henderson a much better defensive center fielder than people might think oh yeah what he's healthy he is when his legs are healthy you know the public image of him is hitting the big postseason home runs and you can overlook what he does with the glove he hit the fence pretty hard but this wall is padded with about six inch some kind of foam so when you hit it it's a kind of a comfortable hit well pat borders coming on you see the replay getting the ball back to the infield a hurry so as you noted earlier tony with a left-hander they make the percentage move and go to the right-handed hitting catcher borders instead of the lefty swinging wit and it's the first pinch hitter first man off the bench that gaston has used in any capacity in this series he's gone to his bullpen but not to his bench before this and borders immediately comes through fernandez runs right facebook plate there's no play on him john mclaren held him up thinking if ricky does unleash home he doesn't want fernandez thrown out this is something about fernandez gets a big hand but the stop sign was there i mean if ricky comes up throwing he makes a good throw or fernandez stumbles you don't want to take a chance four runs down so fernandez by running through mclaren stop sign gets an rbi for borders in there i'm not going to throw them out playing deeply watch this watch john mclaren saying whoa tony okay so he does run through the stop sign but the next question was it an overly cautious stop hey you're four runs down there you can see right there he's stopping but he can't oh your fall runs down what that you're sure you got to run your one run coaster what if he tripped and stumbled what if ricky unleashes the throw of his life you're out of the inning well if it takes that kind of adversity or that kind of excellent play to do you in maybe it's worth the chance you're trying to get something going with two outs he's off with the crack of the bat if he does throw through the guy who got the hit moves to second and he's in scoring position if fernandez is safe at the plate to me this is an opposite situation of yesterday where the blue jays had something going the possibility of the big inning they sent felix canseco throws him out but the team was on a little bit of a roll at that time sure he scored but this is something that the blue jays have been lacks at running through stop signs getting picked off and it'll make a third base coach very conservative in many cases because because things do go wrong bobby valentine's got a little input on this bobby yeah we just have tony fernandez putting his hitting shoes on every time he goes to the plate protecting that knee injury and we're going back with kelly gruber at the plate gruber has three singles and a stolen base let's go back to bobby so we can elaborate on that point bob yeah with the turf here you have uh tony fernandez who's one of the few players who does in fact changes spikes he wears the turf shoes when he's on defense and then the spikes when he's at the plate and it seems to be working real well for tony today when i say bobby i mean both bodies you and bobby valentine mr costas but he he used to wear a very heavy brace after the knee surgery limped around all last year and the shoes apparently help him with the traction and maybe a little bit easier on the knee as you said bobby valentine a run home here in the last of the seventh 6-3 oakland they might get gruber for the first time today gallego gobbles it up and throws him out borders with a pinch hit rbi single but toronto still trails by three with two innings left for them which compact passenger van helps you stop best on the slippery curves you drive on chevy astro or dodge caravan chevy's standard four-wheel anti-lock brakes help you make controlled stops dodge doesn't offer four-wheel anti-lock brakes and look what can happen if the front wheels skid during braking so stop and think powerstick's one-stroke protection 24-hour protection in just one stroke new power stick from faberge hey guys and grills got some party time tips for you from extra gold draft first never party with anything less than the full tilt taste of extra gold this is serious beer another tip you know at a party like this it's a good idea to keep a close eye on the family pets buddy how you did come here yeah oh you didn't think that go for the full tilt taste of extra gold you guys are sick it's all right man [Music] spaghetti lasagna linguine regattoni tortellini anything that ends with a bowel argue with an umpire let kirk gibson butt with the bases loaded and i'd never let a friend drink and drive winners work as a team if you plant a drink then choose a designated driver the preceding message was furnished by major league baseball naturally borders stays in the game after the pinch hit rbi single and replaces ernie whit behind the plate ward is finished and here's john cerruti the left-hander who did some good work for them as a starter this year and was sent to the bullpen for the playoffs to give them some lefty righty balance he had the best earned run average among all the blue jay starters and this was a tough call for cedaw gaston al whitmar the pitching coach but they knew that a little bit later on in the season not too late john strutty did struggle a little bit after really great start came out of nowhere in spring training a lot of teams wanted to get him for their starting rotation in the off-season but he had had the experience of pitching out of the gold fan and mike planning and that didn't jimmy key of course came up when they first called him up and pitched out of the bullpen but he's become such an outstanding starter so cetel gaston like he does and had a talk with john and say hey look we're going to nine-man staff to get the extra left-hander down with wells what do you think and really they made the decision together it wasn't dictated by cedar gasket [Music] cerruti is an amherst product and when they had musclemen didn't musclemen go to harvard they could have some very intellectual discussions down in that bullpen or do their income tax together down there cerruti had a clubhouse visitor late in the season and not not the usual sort of guy who drops by a baseball clubhouse prince albert of monaco wrapped on the door said i'd like to see my old classmate my old amherst pal mr ceruti [Music] i think that was the day one of the days john got knocked out early wasn't in the mood to talk to any old friends tough to slam the door in the face of a prince though like me ignoring you exactly on a strike to phillips versatility this team has not just phillips you see it with gallego you don't lose a whole lot defensively with phillips in third what you lose is kearney lansford's bat but 333 but you can see how many other ways oakland can generate offense so many i mean they did it i'm not saying base to base with ricky but they do it look at gallego hit and running and then the quick two or three run home run in today's ball game a call strike it's full to phillips he'll be followed by passi and then gallego every once in a while this crowd you see a white flag being weakly waved it's not a surrender flag but you know they were going like crazy last night and they're the rally towels that they were you know trying to get things going with but it looks in this situation as quiet as the crowd is down six to three only two innings left and on the verge of going down 3-1 and being in a position of having to win three in a row from the mighty a's to move into the world series it looks almost like a white flag toronto's had a lot of opportunities unofficially i've got 10 left on base i mean they had them all over the place it has happened to toronto over the last month and boy they came from a long ways 12 games under 500 but had one base hit or so to have the real big inning to blow a team away or not they've had difficulty doing that lately freddie mcgriff is not hitting home runs you can be very very careful with george bell room service hop for fernandez who doesn't need much help everyone is for him he's he's like ozzy smith you say how could he never miss the ball they never get a bad hop they get bad hops but they make him look easy again it's lopez against molina in between the playoff double header and then we go to candlestick and i was wrong earlier when i said marv albert was headed out there for the pregame show mars going to do nfl live along with o.j simpson tomorrow from the studio in new york so gail gardner handles the baseball pregame show from candlestick park before game three of the national league series trudy with the curve you just saw he's come up with a good sinker ball it's something that al whitmore teaches as well as anybody flanagan basically wasn't the singer ball pitcher he came here he started throwing it well keys always had a good one stoddelmeyer was taught the sinker ball by al woodmar sort of used to throw a little fork ball doesn't use it very often anymore ron hassey was always something of a billy martin pet philly was always very very high on hassey's ability and he did have a really big season for billy in 1985 with the yankees hit 13 home runs hit close to 300 as a platoon player playing against righties when your left-handed pull hitter yankee stadium a lot of people are going to like you and something else about hassi he's always been regarded as an excellent handler of pitchers a good game caller which is not necessarily the same thing as moving around behind the plate blocking pitches and whatnot well that's an overlooked quality everybody looks at the throwing arm and the way base runners go these days sometimes you can't throw them out we've seen that with ricky and you see with the vince coleman you know maybe not as much a couple of years ago but he's still a great base stealer and you want a guy not because you got a great throwing arm you want him because he handles the pitcher they feel comfortable together a lot of pitchers like to work to hassle a guy that blocks pitches with minimum scoring positions especially on third borders over with gruber but this one's in the seats [Music] interesting collection of faces what about the two apes earlier people coming in all manner of disguises [Music] 21 base hits in this ball game a weak wave at it by hassan rudy strikes him out i'm not saying that's an indication of how hard it is to score in this ballpark but it might be 21 base hits have been some walks stolen bases a couple monstrous home runs and yet only nine runs old exhibition stadium right down the road along the shores of lake ontario and might have been about ten to nine in this situation gallego bats with the bases empties one for three he had a fifth inning single bottom of the eighth for toronto it'll be manny lee junior felix and back to the top for lloyd mosby 6-3 oakland 11 hits for the a's 10 for the blue jays but three of oakland's 11 hits have cleared the fence two homers by ricky henderson the longest homer ever hit in this park into the upper deck in left by jose conseco [Music] gruber has it gallego didn't realize it was a fair ball at first he hesitated at the plate thinking it was going to go foul and just stood there and watched the chopper and he knows that he made a mistake as he tosses the helmet in disgust to the first base coach dave mckay look at him is introducing a new menu no a little more to the right i mean left no go back to the right we call it wendy's super value menu everything is at a special low price no that that's close but it's not rice delicious food like biggie drinks biggie fries chili including our new junior bacon cheeseburger all at prices that leave change in your pocket that's perfect no it's not it's got to go back to the left wendy don't you have anything else to do come try the super value menu at wendy's i'm state farm agent jack frank i'd like to tell you about one of my car insurance policy holders paul messer for 24 years we helped paul keep his coverages up to date then one day he had an accident then he really found out about the fast fair claim service we promised him great claim service is one of the reasons paul came to state farm 24 years ago and it's a big reason he's going to stay occasionally through the sands of time there are merged designs which are viewed as more than evolutionary introducing the revolutionary 1990 toyota celica [Music] to you who will build and shape our future we invite you to learn the technology of tomorrow while you serve your country in the navy of today friday your summer continues [Music] baywatch returns friday in the event toronto doesn't rally here a look at the historical precedence comebacks from 3-1 deficits in seven-game series either world series or recently since they changed the playoff format in a best-of-seven league championship series the royals did it twice in 85 to these blue jays down 3-1 in the playoffs then to the cardinals trailing 3-1 in the world series and kansas city was an underdog in each case let's pop it back up there for a second it's going to be very difficult for toronto if they don't win here not just to win tomorrow that's well within the realm of the possible but to win the last two in oakland tough enough to win three straight against the a's but they are so good in their own part looking at this list the 58 yankees won the fifth game at yankee stadium to get back to 3-2 then took the last two from the braves in milwaukee tigers did the same thing to the cardinals in 1968 winning the last two at busch stadium mickey lolich beating bob gibson on two days rest and in 1979 the pirates were down 3-1 to the heavily favored orioles one game five in pittsburgh and then broke earl weaver's heart by taking the sixth and the seventh in baltimore so it's been done both ways lee hits it back off honeycutt's glove rick hustles after it falls down has no flight so the blue jays continue the pace of having at least one runner on in every ending of this ball game they have stranded ten they've had their chances off welsh and honeycutt a lot of balls shooting up the middle of this game four line drives have already been caught by pitchers scored as a base hit up steps felix one of the many toronto switch hitters you know there's been a lot done by the eighth and ninth place hitter so far in this series uh ten times of oakland eighth and ninth theater's been on and we've seen that again today last night liam felix throw to the line up here comes dennis eckersley at least starting to tune up each team with 11 hits a bouncing ball to third phillips doesn't look at second takes the shore out lee in scoring position with one down it's one of those times when phillips didn't feel he could get the runner might have been bang bang so he took the shore out at first base junior felix just trotted down that's one of the reasons why they may have sent him home last year if you run hard sometimes you force especially with this speed you force a bad throw and you just mentioned that baltimore pittsburgh series i'll never forget a play in that roberto clemente had a weak chopper back to cuellar he ran like crazy and cuellar looked up spun around because he's left-handed and he rushed his throw and threw the ball wild clementine beat it out and that little play had a lot to do with turning that world series around i can still see it and it was in the 71st oh yeah dominated by roberto clemente mosby cuts and misses you know you say oh it's a sure out well sometimes they're not that sure out in post-season play the pressures build up and third baseman might let it let it get away if you hustle [Music] mosby two for three with a walk today you can see what larussa did he gave the sign just to see if there's any location given he wanted honeycutt to get the sign then step off so they can see what manny lee's doing at second base see if there's any relay mookie wilson on deck is there a more thorough manager than i guess there are but tony larussa is a real detail man he sees the whole field at all times outside two and one larussa can recall as many baseball people can you'd be surprised how many if you don't spend a lot of time around the game can recall in exact detail pitch for pitch the fateful seventh inning of the fourth game of the playoffs in 83 when he was managing the white sox and jerry dobzinski got caught off second base against the orioles the game they lost in extra innings when tito landrum hit the homer off brit burns it gets away lee's going to third and he's there with one out that was a wicked looking sinker ball show it to you from center field diving down now they usually give a wild pitch to the pitcher but this ball has got to be knocked down but again hassi has lost some mobility because of the knee problems and not being able to work out a wild pitch and to me that's a pass ball and you reach for it you flop down on your knees you can smother it maybe it's not as easy as i'm making it sound but more often than not if the ball bounces no matter where they give the whale pitch to the pitcher the infield moves back they'll give them the run which would be their fourth and can bring them to within two if mosby hits it on the ground except the third base phillips may take a shot it's a good point now honeycutt still not as smooth as he like and we showed you before dennis eckersley is up it's just a matter of how long melusa wants to go in honeycut tony is coming out he knows the matchup that mookie wilson is not as good right-handed and left but that doesn't matter with eckerle is the tying run we got one of the best closers in the game you'll use them and he's going to use it give eckersley a little breathing room this is the sixth playoff game nl combined and there hasn't been one any closer than three runs this is as close as any game has been late as eckersley comes in with a 6-3 lead one out and two on last half of the eighth another reminder as eckersley trots in it's the fight after this game tony the tiger lopez against john john molina and then that's followed by game three of the national league championship series from candlestick pre-game show at eight eastern time first pitch in the vicinity of 8 20 i guess rick sutcliffe for the cubs mike lacasse will pitch game three for the giants so ackersley comes out it's his third ball game in this league championship series you might recall we mentioned it before that he saved all four against the red sox last year four close ball games heckersley is pitch three and he's given up one hit this league championship series he's got one save [Music] eckersley had the strained rotator cuff not torn strained but it caused him to miss a considerable portion of the season he still saved over 30 games last year though he wrapped up 45 [Music] impeccable control hides the ball extremely well which tony i guess is an overlooked key for example scouts have told me that gene nelson has very similar stuff when compared to dennis actually but he does not have eckerly's pinpoint control and he doesn't hide the ball like dennis eckersley does coming out of his window eckersley's got that little crossfire delivery now left-handed hitters used to give him a lot of trouble if you could pinch hit left-handers against them which they often do the blue jays might not but a lot of teams do and they remove right-hand hitters even if there's a good one but there's something about him when he does that crossfire keeps the shoulder in and the ball comes out of nowhere plus he throws him in such great spots we saw him one of the first times out in the streets throw some off-speed stuff some change-ups usually he's a power pitcher throws the ball in the high 80s back door breaking ball and he can scare right handers off the plate with a curveball but he's not a one-dimensional pitcher i guess what i'm saying you know i looked at a scouting report about him and talked to some american league hitters about eckersley just before this series and they all came back to one point not the first point on the list but somewhere down there about five or six observations down about dennis eckersley loves the backdoor slider on a 3-2 count against the left-handed hitter so what kurt gibson did to him in game one of the world series last year hasn't moved him off that tendency well mel didier who was advanced scouting for the dodgers said that's what to look for eckersley who proves that he's in no way he said i didn't have that many three and two counts of left-handed hitters so there were not enough numbers to back that up so you get different stories from those two people upsteps mookie blue jays keep putting the pressure on him even with the three home runs by the oakland ball club but they just at this point have been able to get the base hits to a bouncer over the mound gallego shovels it to why he's on to first safe mookie beat it and they get a run and you just saw the reason for one of them that pat gillick went out and got mookie wilson even though he knows they may not be able to sign him for next year when the pennant was there to be grabbed in the eastern division he wanted speed for the skydome he was hoping he had a lead off hitter he didn't get the lead off hitter but he got the speed he got the presence of mookie wilson gallego and weiss could not have done it any quickly he'll have done it more quickly now i would say the chants are very remote that mookie's going because you don't will not take the bat out of a freddie mcgregor's hand he has been on a home run drought for a week after week after week and he's still capable he is now the tying run and he break the spell and at-bat number 100 since his last one on september 4th rolled foul 1-1 0-4 in this game with two strikeouts 2 for 16 in the series pat gillick cohen is more intense than him during the game hector's lease 1-1 pitch the runner goes and it's foul back so sedo you may say he's playing against the book which you see a lot of tonight with don zimmer and roger craig ceno also knows he wants to create a hold done it before he did it one of the key games at the end of the season first and third started mookie wilson up and mcgriff got a base set made in the first and third and because he's slumping he's trying to create some holes chant of blue jays blue jays not going this time pass he throws behind mookie but he's back easily you wonder if mookie will have a green light in this entire count series well just that one time if you can make it then they put the threat in the mind of eckersley he goes this time hit hard and he can't get it gallego misses it with his dive wilson around third waved home big chance throw off line and he scores [Applause] wilson ran the blue jays into two runs in this inning not many other hitters would have beaten the potential double play at first earlier now he's running on this ball hit by mcgriff and he scores all the way from first so he saw the strength of consequence throwing out yesterday on felix with mookie going the ball glances off the glove of the second baseman gallego mclaren waves them on a strong arm yesterday and erratic arm today that falls anywhere near the plate luke is gone so mclaren this time with a faster runner than fernandez took a chance and got away with it mcgriff held first and that's a big play if he had been able to move up to second as the throw came through the tying run would be in scoring position here's bell you know late in the season there were times and that was with the expanded rosters freddie mcgriff was pinched run for by tommy lawless in fact there was one game the extra inning game on that friday night mcgriff and bell were both out of the ball game when it was long because of pinch runners just keep just keep pounding them inside don't they george bout the reaction upstairs from pat gillick as mookie made his mad dash he was worried everybody else is cheering and pat's saying is he going to make it or not trying to body english him home they got the offline throws what they got brazen move by mclaren and shakers throw ran wide oh one and two to george bell i still say a worthwhile chance to take you know you make him make a good play if he throws you out at the plate fine you know who's coming to bat if he got thrown out george bell i'll tell you what mvp cannon over hunting rbi it worked but part of it because canseco threw it 20 feet from home plate but it was very gutsy cultured occurred by mclaren here comes the 1-2 pitch in the air center field not deep enough dave henderson puts an end to it but they creep back to 6'5 i thought this would be a halloween like any other when my secretary susie came in the phantom of the fridge is stealing all the coors light here not now thanks i'm driving who was the phantom and why was it stealing coors light this halloween enter the coors light hundred thousand dollar phantom of the fridge sweepstakes look for clues at this halloween display and get your poor's light before the phantom does [Music] there's a motor oil that talks about world-class protection catchy phrase but valvoline is recommended by name in the owner's manuals of these world-class cars the other motor oil is not george bell retired on the fly ball to center to end the threat in the eighth o for five today two for 16 in the series an average of 125 both his hits singles he also has a sacrifice fly many times bob you pick one hitter in the clubhouse meeting pregame meeting or pre-series meeting that you want to pitch around or really make perfect pitches on it's obviously george bell and he hasn't gotten a whole lot to hit when they wanted to get the ball under his hand inside with something on almost every pitcher thus far has been able to do it i just haven't made a mistake and let the ball drift out over the point to this point on george bell here's the o1 pitch to walt weiss left field mookie wilson got a good jump on it coming on fast and he makes the catch so we use that speed two waves we saw that last inning offensively and he was playing in this one run ball game very deeply you don't want to double by the first hitter so he had a long way to come one out and they've got to contend with ricky henderson again slide out homer twice in the third and the fifth and bounce to short one steal away from an all-time postseason series record he swiped seven in the series none today he's been trotting most of the time what other point you know where p green gloves draw a little more attention it's not even fiddly green is it remember the days this is even after you retired into the probably late 60s and even the trace of a beard a mustache was just thought of as outrageous for a ball player any hair making its way out from beneath the cap she's about to be close to unamerican did you ever play an exhibition game against the house never saw them play unfortunately to one pitch ricky fouls it off you know i still say and there's no right or wrong here tony just for the sake of a baseball argument and that's half the fun of being at the ballpark he just knocked the possibilities around when mookie tried to score it made it a one-run game regardless of what happened subsequently and change the possibilities in the ninth remember it's against eckersley i say if there was even a 50 chance of him scoring that's a better chance than even a hot george bell getting a base hit off eckersley and bell is slumping my discussion was also about the not setting fernandez who's not as fast not as good a base runner as mookie and of course tony does have a lead that has given him problems but you take a chance if posenko makes a good throw you're at 6'4 and it worked that time mclaren was very cautious with fernandez and very bold with wilson fernandez ran through his stop sign he sent mookie home they both scored and here's ricky drawing the walk and now getting set to try and torment cerruti another left-hander with a good move maybe not as good as flanagan's and key but still a pretty good one john ceruty sometimes has trouble to give you a good move and then sometimes a little slower to first base and that good base dealer takes off and by the time he gets into the first baseman's hand the runner ricky henderson in this case might be sliding in a different catcher now borders instead of wit but as you've said repeatedly tony most of the bases are stolen off the pitcher rather than the catcher and in ricky henderson's case both can do their jobs perfectly and you'll swipe it most of the time well pat borders is relatively new to the catching job just a few years and outfielder third baseman has a stronger arm i think than ernie witt at times sometimes rushes his throw doesn't get a good grip johnny sullivan the bullpen coach a former catcher detroit in the kansas city ball club has worked with him he gets the footwork down and everything else he can release it pretty well see there's a different kind of hitter up at the plate now dave henderson the strikeout guy as opposed to lansford and henderson might dave anderson might not be as disciplined as carney lansford he's not with that hamstring pull and may not give ricky anderson enough time to steal to read cerruti then again henderson might get a fastball too because of ricky henderson in the bottom of the ninth hernandez who has been a blue jays catalyst the last two games will lead off then borders who's hitting in wit spot followed by gruber against eckersley well you could see mozilli could see mullix but mullix hasn't seen a lot of action so you may see mozilli for borders trying to work equally for a walk or an extra base set working accuracy for walks a little bit of possibility however he will not help you beat him [Music] conseco on deck we told you during the regular season ricky henderson was 22 of 24 successful steals against left-handed pitching pitch out and he's not going ricky ricky doesn't even get back to first base that's kind of stuff that would get a borders mad borders likes to throw to behind runners more than a lot of catchers in the american league ricky just looked in and said uh huh they're going to call the pitch out signs from the bench or relay through borders whether they want cerruti to step off to throw over two balls no strikes bob but a lot of cases is kind of hold if your runner let there's a decent power here like dave henderson pick his pitch see if he gets something he can handle and jack it out of here at that time he made a good pitch 2-0 he sunk it down and almost away he was looking for something inside and shrewdy made a big pitch still in the hole though the blue jays have trailed three-nothing 5-1 and 6-2 they've now battled back to 6-5 and it's saruti's job to keep it a one-run game and give them a reasonable shot at eckersley in the last of the night god mighta got him yes ricky tried to decline he climbed like he was just getting a very relaxed lead rick you'll give a deep filing he's going back there was a little false step and he's a while just do this little false step back and deceive saroni he little head fake a little cheating with the right foot they're all over ricky henderson ricky was going very close but because he dove back to first instead of trying to sprint to second it's a pick off and not officially caught stealing so they still haven't stealing yet you just saw a reason why you want a left-handed first baseman it's a right-hander he's not gonna get him throws right there and the glove boom right down on it that's just one of the reasons for starting 363 in other reasons behind dave henderson three and one and lost him ricky's reaction yeah he drops his cap to the crowd one time you got me the way i water with my legs and one with my back he loved it like you said you know ricky and i ought to stroll arm-in-arm down the streets in toronto two most popular people here this weekend mark and sato it appears that we're gonna get a right-hander jim acker [Music] jim acker coming on bob who's been in all the games so far well as we've been telling you all day in between the baseball games we've got a fight tony the tiger lopez against john john molina bob trumpy is sitting in for marv albert to call it and let's go to trump ringside you're looking live at arco arena in sacramento california where we're awaiting the 12-round junior lightweight championship ibf champion tony lopez will oppose jose excuse me john john molina wellina comes in with a 19-2 record 13 wins by knockout he's a real religionship [Music] back at the sky dome bob costas and tony and the very busy jim acker is in yet another game as we go down to bobby valentine a little different situation bob in the fact that dennis eckersley being in the game in the eighth inning now has to sit around a long time in the dugout while a pitching change is made and that's a little different for him he's used to just coming in closing the door in the ninth inning we'll see how he's affected here in this big game another reason for the switch here beyond the obvious lefty-riding percentage conseco has killed saruti head-to-head seven for 18 with three home runs against saruti they might have made the move anyway because of the lefty righty situation even if konsenko had never had a hit against serudi and actor had a pretty good sync the ball and reedy dropped it beneath the hands of jose conseco last time he faced it then struck him out with a sweeping swinging a curveball strike one for a lot of sluggers like himself you say well if you make a mistake he's going to beat you now this guy they've made some good pitches on him and he's still gotten base hits that single up the middle of driving around was still amazing with the shift on just muscled up the middle hit it hard and a ball of put inside off the plate one-on-one and seiko was talking before the series about all the media attention he said everybody wants to psychoanalyze me ricky hargerson took a lot of that pressure of the media off him though yeah he really did oh yeah he really did and on his hands he lifts the pop-up and we won't psycho idolize penseco for the time being the inning is over eckersley with just a one-run lead to protect as we go to the bottom of the ninth hey mark may i borrow your car it's a v6 don't let the power go to your head the toyota camry v6 has 156 horsepower that makes for surprisingly exhilarating driving but please try to be mature about it mark thanks for letting me borrow this powerful camry v6 i think i'll go out and buy one today ladies and gentlemen i wish my old partner was here tonight because this used to be our song all my dreams come true [Music] in the movies happy endings are easy but in the real world they take solid planning so for investment advice peace of mind even buying or selling a home come to the companies of the prudential and build your future on the rock wouldn't it be great if lawyers showed up to tell you that someone you didn't even know left you like eight gazillion dollars and wouldn't it be great if the lawyers brought beer really great beer like keystone the fresh cold filtered beer in a can that tastes like beer in a bottle because of keystone's specially lined can and wouldn't it be great if your boss called demanding information and you said call 4-1-1 introducing keystone and keystone light bottle beer taste in a can wouldn't that be great my athlete's foot kept flaring up put it out it just flare up again then my doctor told me about connecting it cures recurring athlete's foot use it regularly it'll keep the fire from coming back tinactin puts the fire out for good this is a machine built for absolute dependability and these are its hardest working parts [Music] eckersley getting ready for the knife let's go down to bobby valentine the texas ranger manager for some thoughts on eck well ceto gaston is going to try to use everything he can using eckersley's strengths in their favor he throws strikes he does he does not have anyone taking in this situation and they he hasn't taken the base if they can they'll be stealing at first opportunity was talking about eckersley's control as we look at another tony fernandez coming out of the on next circle just to back it up and we've mentioned this before but it's so remarkable you can't say it often enough that's in the three seasons with the a's striking out just about one per inning and walking next to nobody this year he kicked it up a notch 58 innings three count them three walks and 55 strikeouts is this the time that tony fernandez might try and slug bun we haven't seen in this series but he's done it during the season third baseman comes in he fakes the bunt and tries to slug it by him or right at the shortstop fernandez there it was there you go but eckersley's got it you called it tony but it didn't work he had phillips charging walt weiss the shortstop is very aware of the play again that would be an iran shooter scouting report but tony wanted to either slap it by phillips or high hop it off the turf to weiss and ek makes the backhanded play and now ceto gaston sends the veteran rance mullings to the bat rack mullinix had some big years here hit over 300 several times left-handed batter of course especially in exhibition stadium he was a power threat usually in double figures and home runs in limited duty as a platoon player well you've got to tie the game before you can think about defense the blue jays are looking for a run and mulch to get something going he's got gap power they've got tommy lawless now as their third catcher he has caught like one hitter in a steal situation he threw billy ripkin out on a pitch from tom hankey but that's all the catching he's done this year ceto says i need to tie first before i worry about my defensive catcher doesn't get the first one from eckersley there's the lawman [Music] who is already priming himself should molex get on base he knows he's going to be the pinch runner he thinks he will be got lyriano too but he's been the guy they've been so good stealing heckersley quickly ahead 0-2 mullinix began his career as a very promising shortstop with the angels then bounced around a while and latched on and became a productive player for many years for bobby cox jimmy williams and now winding it down for cedaw gaston with toronto the o2 pitch what mullick started as a left-handed uh d-h that's right and pitching and then when grub was already played third but the d-8 spot for the blue jays has been one of the weak links this year alex has had so many productive years both playing third and d-h against right-handed pitching but they've got very few rbi's as opposed to oakland where they lead the league in rbi's from the eighth spot two and two and here it is struck him out you know about the tendency off a necklace land if you're hitting you're gonna think this way saying well dude he throws a lot of first bit strikes to get ahead so you go up hacking however a lot of those first bit strikes are of a different variety they're right on the edge it's not like here it is right down the middle lucy takes the fastball upstairs mullix likes the ball down more than up [Music] he might throw you the breaking ball the fast forward a little bit of synchrony he's throwing some change-ups on the first pitch already in this league championship series boy they're right on the lines tony phillips is near the bag right on the line at third base outfield goes way deep now with two outs no doubles in the gap or over your head uber hasn't touched eckersley and his eight at bats against him lifetime he's three for four in this game three singles plus a stolen base the 01 pitch they're down to their last strike you know whitey ford had in theory which is a good one about pitching late in the ball games and everybody wants to go up there and be the hero they get over anxious they swing at off speed stop way out ahead trying to home run or they'll swing with bad balls and gruber trying to pull the ball in a fastball out of the strikes on the way he lays off game another one same spot days will be in rough shape if they go down three to one toward the hole he's got a base hit and he's a base stealer capable of swiping one against a guy who's relatively easy to run against a nice at-bat for kelly gruber once he saw he got in the hole he just tried to put the ball in play and sneak it to the right side here comes lee mozilla manny lee who got a big base hit off honeycutt yesterday through the right side with truman on better right handed here than left lee masili is going to be a pinch shooter for him jilly starts the first two ball games and wouldn't have based it yet does he bother oh for seven as the d-8 in the first two games [Music] what a boost he gave this ball club against the kansas city royal his first starting game in this ballpark against kubaza markup is on boy at a home run he was on base five times a couple of walks so many clutch base hits as a pinch hitter in the postseason for the mets in 1986. one time all-star swings at the first one fouls it back he got his fastball first pitch heckersley who saved every game in the playoff sweep against the red sox a year ago and was the mvp of the series going for his second save in this one and a chance to put the a's up three games to one tomorrow stewart against steve 6'5 oakland two out gruber at first last half of the night and time called kelly inches away maguire holding it not going ball one oh cassie thought he had the outside corner fastball in first pitch fouled off the tailing fastball right near the edge second pitch see much down the middle from eckersley gruber not going again and one and two to mazzilli see people forget that eckersley can still get the ball up in 90 miles an hour as he just did on that last pitch you think of this pinpoint control but it's pinpoint control with some velocity near 90. hearing in for hassey's sign glancing back at gruber groover now drawing with a first base up by rick reed as if to say was that a legitimate move or junior felix who has a double and a couple of rbis today is on deck if mozilla can give him a chance the one-two pitch has a great eye [Music] he's always drawn a very large total of walks he's taken two very close pitches hasn't are you surprised that gruber hasn't made a break no i think they want to keep that right side open for mozilla to maybe get one down and wind it around and gruber if you get an extra base it could score from first base not going again well he'll take off now and remember what happened with wilson running and two out and inning ago a ball was hit in an area where it would normally be just a single in fact gallego was able to get a glove on it diving to his left was good enough to score mookie all the way from first gruber isn't quite that fast but he is fast he goes and mazzilli fouls it off like gallego deflecting that ball he made consequences a little yeah he made it he deflected it more toward the lion so conseco had to run more and make it more of an off-balance throw mcguire moving behind groover he's off here it comes popped up left side mozzili tosses the bat aside in disgust the a's are in the driver's seat they've won three of the first four great great closers bob have to make great pitches in the clutch and he just did what in that bat from mazzelli but what pitches and pitch selection by heckersley the closest game in either league championship series so far game three in the national league a few hours away here on nbc from candlestick park this is the only one run game we've had the blue jays battled back a couple of times but eventually it's oakland 6'5 huge day for henderson two home runs game four of the american league championship series has been brought to you by new keystone and keystone light bottled beer taste in a can wouldn't that be great buy your toyota dealer whatever car or truck you choose you'll love the quality who could ask for anything more by wendy's old-fashioned hamburgers the best hamburger in the business and by valvoline motor oil people who know use valvoline [Music] sony a quick point before we get out of here
