Verdi takes a lot of time melvin bratton Jane Cullen was the man under the defensive bench top number and 33 of white Rousseau and Johnson the strength of course the linebackers Graham Bower give topless define all-america share California and problems in the secondary one yard Cobb's henderson on ice and johnson the problem is they're not that tall that's a small secondary that's the biggest problem they have Michael Irvin six to wide receiver from I am he's going to gets a couple of defensive backs five nine five nine five tenth at 511 and Chester birdies first passes on target to Michael Irvin best thought everyone said he ran a late for for not he just didn't say how late first down gain of two door earlier in the ballgame been state stopped on there for mr. Bertie rolls out it is wait Highsmith the intent mr. worthy over the middle to the tight end Charles Henry and Henry down at the 35 yard line 1120 that is the tone remaining first quarter we had Lister and the chains on the moon [Applause] we have flags on the field delay of game on offensive team violation of the 25 second clock takes the ball out to the 40 it'll be first down in 15 chip first in 15 and here's high school which they showing the Blitz and his coming his pressure from the outside but the past is too high what a lot of fresh people in there because they know Testaverde has a great deal of mobility they'll want to keep those people pressure they can continually try to put some pressure on my IV quarterback their Davenport Testaverde but sometime he throws Rodie over the middle tempeh tempeh Henry the intended receiver the tight end and Sileo one time in bill Hawkins the other and Nittany Lion second time on offense from their own 29 yard line no score DJ Dozier and Dozier is wrapped up at about the 34 yard line second down and five Eric Hamilton in motion 45 yard line he's got the first down mid state with their first first down [Applause] what is incomplete 13 quarters second down starting offensive ly and offensive movement in the offensive line you know and the one that drives his team 15 [Applause] dozer to the 49-yard law they're down five [Applause] pressure and the pass is incomplete Bruno kicking to kim tae lose pressure he gets it off entire fair catch but he wants to let it go but it bounces in this is Charlie Jones with Jimmy cephalo and Bob Griese and the national championship on the line Miami with the ball at their own two yard line Testaverde has completed 3 of 6 for 30 yards no score her Pinsky down the ball on the punt at the 2 and Highsmith gets the call and the defense stops him right at the line of scrimmage his momentum may take him to the 3 yard line his Fiesta Bowl the end zone far side [Applause] be calm protection and and it draws over the man it is complete at the 15-yard line no score in the ball game six and half minutes ago first period he picks up five it's going to be second and five second down and five I smell and is recovered by charles-henri that idea [Applause] completion of bumble and the recovery by Penn State duffy cobbs got the four for forty the problem is he's only five runs a for a forty site counters to the left and picks up four to the 40 yard line and our second and six at the Cannes for Tiana little play-action the reverse Blair Thomas [Applause] the Miami defense rod Carter the linebacker lost the other outside linebacker to overflow and it is to Dozier the leading receiver for Penn State but what and it's for down John Bruno to Keck jin-tae is the deep back he wants to just hang this and he does inside the tent out of bounds at the 9 yard line and Shane Conlan back in the ballgame for Penn State it's a first down for my [Applause] done at first Africans and Testaverde we missed a week because of the injury and also with all the awards he missed a lot of practice pull up tight from the end zone with pressure he's out to the 5 to the 10 to the 20 has the first down to the twin five linebackers in the set now for Penn State on first and 15 with jumps to the outside we're coming Testaverde hits the open [Applause] after the 42 yard line Anne Alonzo Highsmith takes himself out there a lot of her comes down and Bradley DeVito entered the time possession was heavily on the side of a hurricane [Applause] second and six highsmith back into the office they're even and we have come to the end of the first quarter the score is Miami nothing and pin state nothing in the battle for number one sing them out of their own territory he picked at 21 yards and the first down here's a play-action fake and it is too high Testaverde as hit 7 of 12 491 yards I spent two the 41 so he has a couple and it's going to be third down let's look at the statistics at that traje first quarter Russia garnished Miami forty-two to four and look 91 look at the time of recession that's the big factor there the passing team the University of Miami you would think that they would not have the time of possession on their side they are dominating that statistic shows how expert we are we thought it'd be exactly the other way it was this way third day today no scoring goes deep to break fifteen yards on the return and intercept to be at for during the season own territory first and safer with pressure and he goes deep Roundtree could not get to it maybe a step away from six for Giles has come in Jerry hug is coming there now the three wide receivers and at second and ten and the give is to the first back and that's Jimbo Noah in a 5-2 the 35 and it's third and five as propert one of the two tight ends is in motion here's pressure [Applause] over to get rid of the ball a little bit earlier than maybe he wanted to and John Bruno with his fourth putt he would kim tae set for the return and putting the pressure on was Bubba McDowell a great punt taken back at the 14 yard line to xx Black is down two flags are down 3-2 yard bunny and it's going to be a clipping call against the can the second back is William well inside their own territory on three occasions second down and four Testaverde the throw has time the nice rep steps forward for the second time of our game and he dives at the 20 and the market down at the 20 yard line he simply doesn't happen [Applause] and he needed a yard and I'm not sure if he got it in a yard field although they did have four downs with who's playing high school football there instead of the three by the CFL we have the first now we do by the gentle time remaining in the first half no score live to the outside has a it may be too just a birdie and it is there to Brian blades I need a bigger first down at the 33 yard line and here's Iceman [Applause] Brian blades on the receiving end of a Testaverde bass first down in 15 [Applause] he picks up the bless that the passes the intended recipient [Applause] over the middle of the trainers then state with a three-man rush to the sideline it is Williams and he is going to come up short of the first down ask you that was did he have home-field advantage and what did he say he said the only thing he did was tell the van driver where to go because they were lost some time going to a banquet on the return of his gym coach with the fair catch for Penn State cannot carry this offense by himself Oh [Applause] and he is outside of the 30 for Penn State 19 yards for DJ Dozier time remaining eight and a half minutes in the second quarter and the give is a second back DJ Dozier and he fumbled the ball and fell on it hey Gerald Giles checks in at wide receiver for Eric Hamilton second and 11 here comes pressure Shaffer the throw [Applause] he covers the fungal roam brown cosden and Miami with the golden opportunity at the Penn State 23 yard line first down [Applause] about 250 i smith 10 carries only 31 yard at the 15-yard line and here's Highsmith to the left side after seven I'm coming out Karpinsky is in and its first down goal to go Testaverde to throw and it is there charles-henri in the tight-end kukuku Bratton and Highsmith and it is Bratton over the top he is Matt but the call [Applause] scoring from a yard out [Applause] melvin bratton who scored eight touchdowns during the season scores the first touchdown of the Sunkist fiesta bowl here it is you want to know why Melville grant will be a first-round draft choice when he comes out of school that's why because he's not afraid to throw his body around leap over the top he knows the linebacker is doing the same thing from the other line the other side of the line of scrimmage but he gets in for the touchdown [Applause] and Mark Selig to kick off with Blair Thomas and Jim coats set for the return [Applause] at the 15-yard line here is Coates hit at the 26 a couple of tackles and returns to the 25 maybe the 26 yard line find out if Joe Paterno decides to go with Kinsler if this continue and here's DJ dojo and those you're a little head fake in here become about nine yards on the play second down and three as he spotted at the 33 yard line those are showing a little motion and here Steve Smith [Applause] sure has the first down and goes out about just shy of the 40 yard line Penn State is trying to throw the football up John Shaffer as Bob said it's not the way to get it done and Aaron Schaffer yet another set of spray crabs and it is tipped and knocked around he's going to come in complete and in second and Jim and here's dozer on the counter started left back right and sitting there waiting for him was Jerome Brown silly and obviously trying to throw first and run second has not worked for him tonight and he has to throw here is third down and 12 deep over the middle of his day big first is converting a third and 12 first down at the Miami 40 yard line Miami out in front seven another the under four minutes left to go in the first half it was DJ Dozier the outside befit strings and out pulls him down right at the courtyard love [Applause] Simba Nala the first back through Manoa rambles to the 20-yard line he has 20 back-to-back plays of more than 40 yards at the 21 yard line and it's a first down [Applause] again laughs ball pops loose but the whistle had been blown at this Manoa come down for a breather Steve Smith comes in and Schaefer to throw [Applause] Eric Hamilton 209 that is the time remaining in the first half Miami League seven nothing here Schaefer rolling and throwing the passes [Applause] and gold to go [Applause] it's Manoa ball is loose and it is recovered by Penn State Penn State we'll have to hurry three they get it off with a second ago Schaffer rolling wants to draw John Schaefer from goat to hero as he scores the touchdown Massimo Mayo will now try to go for the tie Matt kissed her to hold Gregg true at the snapper and it's good and in merchandising do it like they're kicking on Anthony takes it at the one-yard line [Applause] the 20 Knights return through the 25-yard line no ice I still think you stay with your offense they've got the ability to move it downfield no sense it going he brought out the bat although that's what test pretty likes to do that has the time and the time runs out as he goes short to Bratton and it's incomplete and it'll be second down and 10 Duffy second and 10 [Applause] we're out of the pattern here's pressure a stiff arm pushes him away tons backfires passes complete as he goes to Perryman and he is cut down at the 35 yard line but and of course the clock wound will at the ready from the referee two men less by Penn State and the pass is lower to the outside and Iike bleep he does have open receivers but he has to find down in Jen in the rush he's deep to the left and fine this time it's Brian bleh at the 42-yard line in 770 as Perryman comes wide to the near side and Irvin is in the slot right i Smith goes out in the pattern mad patches makes the play for Miami both back stay in the block this time for Testaverde he wants to go long and he does far side [Applause] 13 seconds left to go second quarter let's get to em Testaverde Rose throws passes complete to urban urban hit for the Sidon he wants to stop the clock he goes out at the 34 yard line with three seconds left 23 yards on the play and Mark Selig is in with a field goal attempt then he is hit this year from 47 48 and flag back at the 44 and met threes you see Seelye coming back to the sidelines and the penalty will be marked up against Miami and here's the Calvin Jimmy Harper we got on the line went through the ball in Al's of down in algebra Seaver beyond the line when he threw the ball hope for an interference but interference in college is different than pro identif will see it and they go with a straight handoff with Highsmith trying to break it up front and he goes to the 42 picks up 18 yards on the play but the first half comes to a close and we are tied at 7-7 between the Hurricanes of Miami the Nittany Lions of Penn State in the battle for number one we even ask the officials about the Fisher said from the games over we leave it's right so if the teams decide to stay on the field and go at it for another quarter or so the officials won't be there second half is underway and Brattain takes it at the one-yard line and Melbourne is out to the nines that's the tackle at the ten makes a nice move and returns to the 15-yard line so he has 14 yards of the return for melvin bratton we the long layover at the end of the season now the two teams with a half underway let's see if they can turn loose here picks up a couple to the 17 is for in-state to defensive backs are playing second and eight Testaverde little play-action as time drops it over the Midlands drop mr. Verdi farside urban juggles at and it is incomplete enough time to start looking behind you and not concentrating on the football michael irvin do that time and drop the ball fee goes with the second kick he gets it off a flag is down he was hit they'll bring it all back here's coach on the return there was running into the kicker his five yards in the penalty and not an automatic first down and that's the reason they went back and took the punt and Penn State has the ball at their own 38 yard line first down going with a double tight in set and pas furred in motion and his Dozier and Dozier just fights his way to the 42 yard line second in six we're taking a lot of time on the snap from center and Miami says they have the ball penn state says they have it let's see what the official said [Applause] and who state retains possession jerry hug and as a wide receiver and shaffer back to throw and here comes the pressure pretty good protection tip that's in the air a diving interception they say no could not get to it I put a couple of balls inside the 10-yard line as you see a 42 point average and this is his fifth but his pressure and he gets it off and again it was Bubba McDowell with the pressure in Thai at the 20 to the 25 and nailed at the 27 yard line they've averaged 38 points a game they've gone a little over 1/2 and have only scored 7 points the key here is patience and Testaverde early left has lots of time he goes deep urban battling outstanding defensive play by Eddie Johnson Miami at their own 26-yard line we were tied seven-seven this over 12 minutes to go in the third quarter Testaverde steps away steps away and gotten out of the arms of two rushers and finally the third man gets it shake and a bag of ham had a bag third down and 12 there's pressure again he gets it off the pass is complete that's going to be a lot of yardage but Perryman spins away he almost got away what down insects and coach takes it at the 22 [Applause] and there's the clip code we've got a timeout 10:59 that is the time remaining we are in the third quarter it is seven and seven battling for number one first down for Penn State at the 13th [Applause] those're and DJ out to the 16 yard line we'll give him three it's going to be second down and seven and it's second down and [Applause] and still [Applause] you can get past it you can pass those eight men out front you got some Running Room now with Jim 15 left to go in the third and we are tied at 7-7 [Applause] back to throw at ease to the 41-yard line fact in the last four games Seiberling and Dozier together a total of twenty five receptions that's the last four games of the regular season and saw flags went down so you're right they ended up the season with an offense to the to the running back into the tight end and they just pick it up here Charlie able to go back and explain what a gaffe a defense is it's simply a defensive man in every gap and the penalty against Miami for five yards and it is the first down and here is Dozier with the counter and he slips a tackle you'll pick up a yard maybe two on the flood runner he was early in his career and now replaced by the south polar player Thomas who many feel is going to be just as good if not better and the gift of the first back is Steve Smith and Miami is waiting for this man let's watch from the endzone we're looking now through the defense of the cave [Applause] and you can see exactly what Bob Griese was talking about with this set of the eight players in the gaps in his up it is in the air it is intercepted in a Cell when brown and brown to the 40-yard line a pitch eighteen yards on the interception return by Selwyn brown who this past season did not have an interception at the 23 yard line and went in to score they scored in four play and here's Highsmith the sweep to the right side turns the corner at the 33 Warren Williams checks into the office second down at 3 mr. birdie to throw his pressure from the outside passes between first down at his Williams and Williams is stacked up at the 24 yard line has already passed it he could check anywhere in college football and as long as you stay in front of him but if he gets past you and you hit a mentally as long as the receiver isn't positioned to block a defensive back then there can be contact once it gets a stride up or beyond there cannot be any content and there was contact they got away with one one of the yardage is you see [Applause] well slips a tackle and then the 28th guideline 200 14 of all the 29 he just pushes everybody out of the light he does three and a quarter he pensions that's as entering the tight end of the 21 yard line now Penn State was five linebacker oh yeah as time slips a bit throws its intercept I think he saw six points I think he heard me from up here to Eric Hamilton in motion and Jim Manoa the ball the Charlie Penn State has not fumbled their last three football games of Miami his only count the ball of ten times on [Applause] and a first down for Miami of the Penn State 31 and the give is to the second back through Warren web and Williams goes to the 25-yard line he's second in for play-action fake and Testaverde has brought down very seldom two topless with this first set a team record this year for the most amount of penalty large of 770 on the year they seem to be continuing that trend tonight they're down and 12 back at the 32 and Testaverde rolling right and he throws deep has a manner Bonita pass interference on Penn State Dell do we have another angle again here it is now watch his feet he trips himself there he's not tripped there he's got tripped he hooks himself [Applause] first down at the 17 yard line and Williams is pull back oh you hope that the number one doesn't fall on on that one call here's Warren Williams to the 11 has three [Applause] it is what happened to the receivers if there is nobody over there that might have been a mistake on the part of the receiver there you see Testaverde looking at whose receiver importing downfield and a 28 yard field goal attempt by Mark Selig with kim tae holding like pigs or the snapper and it is No and the score remains Miami seven Penn State seven with two minutes and eight seconds left to go we're in the third quarter and the battle for number one continues being all year he's all padded up at trouble with the snap there in Kidd tie on a look [Applause] and just a couple yards on the play out to the side and Roundtree wide to the near side and Hamilton comes in motion but if he throws usually to Dozier are to the tie down baby steps away but fake that he's going to be wrapped up at the 20-yard line as Dan Stubbs got him instead you look for Schaefer to throw here and he has not been successful throw it the play-action doesn't feel about there's several pass underneath and it's going to be incomplete John Bruno kickin and David jin-tae with the return once again Bubba McDowell almost gets to the ball at the 35 kids high he's going to lose about three on the return 45 yards on the kick a loss of three on the return that we're still tied at 7-7 that was a score at halftime [Applause] Bratton Melvin has a couple of yards to the 35 game clock not the 25 second and he gets it off with a second Testaverde bumps it over the middle this one is Highsmith he has it and he has the first down as he goes to the 46 yard line on the final play of the third quarter so are the Canes under way as Trey Bower makes the tackle we have three complete we have one to go we're tied 7-7 and we'll be right back after these messages from your local station [Music] we are 15 minutes away from a national champion or national champions there will be no playoff hear the statistics through three and the first down for Miami from the 46 Testaverde to throw it is intercepted by kotappa low to the 45 and down at the made the tackle 24 on the return at the 36 yard line first down [Applause] he does here and he goes out of there second down and seven Hamilton [Applause] and it is G Smith [Applause] with pressure is knocked away that Kisner to hold and Greg Truitt is the snapper [Applause] that's way short so Massimo missus from 50 and we remain tied at 7-7 and we have 14 minutes and one second left in this national championship battle and his Melvin breath once again we were talking about this during the timeout second and 11 Testaverde to throw over the middle here's Bratton and he's out to the 44 maybe the 45 yard line and he's got the first down Bower with the tackle and a gain of 12 yards on the play and a 200 yard different [Applause] he comes down at the fifth state 48 yard line you know high numbers as far as rushing yardage is concerned they'll go to the rushing attack and they get away from maybe they you stay with it here and - separately they break clean he's to the 30 and goes to the 27 yard line 19-yard Gary Stevens the offensive coordinator for Miami says we've got a good washing it tackled we hate to stay with it too long because he's taken the ball out of tested birdies hands well they may win the championship with the running game second and ninth at the 27 now they'll throw is just a burly rowing and it is cool down no he did not get the one put in we're down enough pass is complete to Bregman retinas down at the 21 yard line so he'll have about six on the play from 38 yards away remember mists from 28 yards from 38 yards [Applause] and it is good and Miami leaves for the second time in the ball game the score the caves 10 the Nittany Lions 7 we'll be back with the kickoff [Applause] Thomas at the 8-yard line [Applause] he just bambbles out to about the 28 guidelines we'll give him 20 yards on the return have 11 minutes and 44 seconds and the first down there is Dozier he stumbles a bit as he makes use me that's because Joe Paterno said we've got to stay away from Bennie blades we want to win the football game seems like they've been doing it all night long check a Down Schaefer to throw there's pressure and [Applause] sad [Applause] Charter and Jerome Brown team up for this third down and 18 and his closure goes you to the 30 closer to the 35 and is going to be about more yards shy of the first down so this pressure every time Bubba McDonald in charge of the 20 at the 21-yard line where we have 9 minutes and 37 seconds left the University of Miami leading Penn State 10 to 7 and the Canes have the ball and rap goes to the 34-yard line it's not had 100 yards the only one from by me to do it his bed melvin bratton and here is Bratton this time he loses down second down [Music] Testaverde with both backs in the block [Applause] that's exactly what she kind of did and his dreams of his youth may come true tonight from the power a scramble for the ball there was a missed connection on this now [Applause] and his Dozier eight minutes and 13 seconds left in the ballgame and now the extra point attempt massimo menko you rushed for more than 3000 young Massimo manka to kick off and Bratton is the deeper [Applause] it was duffy cobbs who saved the day he could well have scored Lonzo 114 yards rushing in 16 carries 42 yard line first down and here he comes again and he has four yards to the 46 so you made the statement earlier that Joe Paterno wanted to get inside of his head and cause a little confusion you know as a quarterback that can be deadly if they can do it we come back and he does is he goes it's clearly understandable those're back to the line of scrimmage and it is second down and 10 and Schaffer to throw [Applause] Brian Seiberling the tight end back and a national championship as well here is Shafer with pressure he throws at his doctor well away slipping out of the grass Jimmy cephalo do you like it which other spot I like the Cleveland Browns I mean how can you nod we're talking about Bernie Kosar and this is one of the other great behind quarterbacks I like face on that football game he goes right back to Alfredo Robertson passes could be the flag is down I like that call and here's the car offensive pass interference offensive passengers ten yards and the loss of town back to the 10 so it is second down in 20 and going to be third down and 20 goes deep [Applause] alfredo Roberts wanting to make up for the drop ball and no lack of effort certainly not a law by Alfredo Roberts he goes with the kick takes to Miami row then taking on the second hop by gym coach do you'll get a couple of yards on the return for yards on the return in state number one don't celebrate too soon 456 that is the time remaining and RAM free to about the 46 yard line and of course Roundtree made a point to stay in bounds and work some time off of the clock and here's Dozier a couple of yards to the 48 yard line third and five [Applause] that's what happened here the court [Applause] Manoah and dan Sileo drops him for a loss of two and we've got a timeout taken by Miami Miami now with two timeouts left Penn State has one we'll be back in a moment and watch for number 48 Bubba McDowell of the Canes he's on the far side and he has been close to blocking a pot and here he comes and he doesn't get there [Applause] in Zion to return down around the 22 yard line fights his way out to the 27 yard line January 2nd this year against Penn State in his second insect [Applause] everybody bow [Applause] third down and six Seavers two and a half finished ago trailing by four as time and he goes deep to Breton does he get it he throws it inside he had to come back for parkas Henderson heads are covered here it is for the title [Applause] if they're first down all the way to the Penn State party a big play by both plate scientists over D bar side passes there and it is
