recognized around the world as the leader in sports television ABC sports celebrating its 25th anniversary the 52nd playing of the Super Bowl classic in New Orleans played since 1975 in the Louisiana Superdome matching Miami and Tennessee the first time ever in the circuit ball for the Miami football team it is the sixth time for Tennessee in this game the first since 1971 the reason for that this is the first Southeastern Conference championship for Tennessee in 16 years and championship is very much a matter of contention on this final day of the 1985 football season and this is why Penn State undefeated 11 and Oh playing Oklahoma tonight in Miami Miami here in New Orleans with a record of 10 and 1 and it appears that Iowa is out of championship hunt as they trailed by 21 in the Rose Bowl to UCLA in the fourth quarter but what about this championship business Miami October 19 went back to Norman Oklahoma and beat the Sooners by 13 points Oklahoma since that time however has righted their circumstance and finished with a flourish to rank number two in the coaches poll behind Penn State which is 1st in both the major polls the UPI coaches poll and Associated Press which is the writers and broadcasters now if Penn State wins tonight in Miami it's academic the Nittany Lions are the national champions but what if Penn State does not win Oklahoma wins there and Miami wins here oh my goodness you've got a difference of opinion let's turn to the respective coaches now and get their opinion on what happens if Miami wins and Oklahoma wins I really believe if Penn State loses and we're fortunate enough to beat Tennessee the Southeastern Conference champion we would deserve to be number one I say this for one reason what we have accomplished on the field we went to Norman Oklahoma without preseason all-american Kevin Fagan plan and we beat Oklahoma decisively in Norman Oklahoma they're the big a champion and they would be the Orange Bowl champion we went to Florida State University a top independent Gator Bowl champion we beat them on their home field we went to Baltimore we played the Atlantic Coast Conference champion cherry Bowl champion Maryland we beat them I say we should be number one because of what we have accomplished we would have the longest winning streak in the country well I think that the people have voted to the UPI poll have said that we're number two team in the country is inconceivable me to believe that those same people would not vote us number one if we beat number one and the logic that I know Jimmy Johnson's using it mine is if they beat us they deserve to be number one well Florida beat them so I think the Florida deserves to be ranked out of Miami all right Frank Broyles I'll make it easy for you and I do have a vote in one of the polls so I'll say this if Miami wins and Oklahoma wins I'm going to vote Miami because Miami beat Oklahoma how do you feel well Keith you simply voted directed and as a well-grounded tradition for this the coaches in that poll voted the record also for number one but after that they both what they feel to be the strongest team and they feel Oklahoma as the second best team in the country but more than this coaches would like to share the will in my opinion if ten state loses Miami will be the national champion in the AP and the coaches like to pass that goodies around and let two schools be the champion and they will vote Oklahoma the national champion and they were sharing you don't see a playoff in the offing anytime soon coaches are three to one against it the bowls are adamant they have the power and I don't see any future for it right now market it argue argue argue that's what you'll have especially if you have two champions right now here's one of the teams in contention the visitors for this 52nd Sugar Bowl Classic the white-shirted Miami hurricane [Applause] a record of 10 and one their second and the AP poll both in the UPI coaches poll the only loss to Florida the opening game second year for coach Jimmie Johnson 18 and six played for and coached under tonight Royals at Arkansas and now hang on because you're about to have laughter probably into one Tennessee with a record of eight one and two SEC champions they lost to Florida by seven points in Gainesville there are two times against UCLA and Georgia Tech coach Johnny majors so my mutter 59 40 and five they have just won their first SEC championship under Johnny major and they're forming now the team [Music] emotional it's expected about 40,000 Revit both ends are here [Applause] whoo they've been saving themselves it is loud in the Superdome I'm Keith Jackson along with coach Frank Broyles let's talk about the matchup Tennessee leads the nation in takeaways there plus 21 Miami is minus three Jimmy Johnson of the Hurricanes says the Tennessee Straits point right at Miami's weaknesses coaches are motivated by the fear of turnovers Keith they work against it constantly but still Miami is minus three in the ratio and Jimmie Johnson's told me twice this week that the key to the ball game is miami of boarding eternal because tennessee is not expected to turn the ball over only seven times in the last seven games and Johnny majors believes that old fear if you don't beat yourself your opponent can't do it either all right do you think Tennessee with its defense now can manifest some pressure on Testaverde Oklahoma could not keep them I think the Tennessee to have any chance to this ball game has got to roll the dice they've got to gamble and put some pressure with their linebackers and safeties I expect Kenna Donahue has drawn up more defensive glitches than any Miami team is seen in the past and they hope to confuse Testaverde who I think may be the best college pastor we've seen in a long long time yeah but you know and I know and everybody in this building and knows anything about this particular matchup realizes that you've got to keep that Miami offense on the if you have any hope to win that means Tennessee is going to possess the ball that's the only way they can win and to possess the football they've got the run they've got to put together and rush and produce some running game if they do this then their pass protection will be an adequate and they can keep the football that's what runs the clock Tennessee needs to have that ball 35 to 38 minutes if they gonna have any chance to win this game all right our Tennessee's got to go out here without their two starting quarterbacks Sims has started for four years Brown started for three years they're sending out to people who have started some at that position but Tim Brandt will fill us in on the condition of those injured people Sims and Brown Timmy keep the situation is this I talked to Johnny majors I watched both players warm up Terry Brown who is that starter who is the experienced man on that right cornerback will not play at all tonight and then Tommy Sims he's a four-year starter on the other side and he may play but he will not instead you've got Andre creamer who started a few games last year on one side on the other side you've got Victor Peppers who started the first game this year but was victimized by UCLA mainly because of his height he's only 5 foot 8 and let me tell you the two wideouts from miami her six one and six foot two with great leaping ability I'll guarantee if I was Miami I would test him test him early and Testaverde may Miami and Tennessee and the coin used for the call tonight to start the ball game in the Sugar Bowl is a new US Liberty silver dollar made by the US Mint commemorating the Statue of Liberty centennial in 1986 and will be available to the public all this year Miami will kick off and Tennessee will receive it and going deep for the volunteers will be Jeff Powell number 21 who is the Walter Mitty story of all stories in 1985 showed up spring practice trek man got the last scholarship just kind of hung around worked hard middle of the season stepped in to the back to you decimated by in has become johnny mater said his top running back going into the Sugar Bowl game he's very fast mark Selig will tick it off while the white shirt and hurricanes and number 52 in the Sugar Bowl is underway valo deep in the end zone will not show us his flashing speed it'll come up to the 20 and carrying on the motif the theme of New Orleans if you will Daryl Dickie a fifth year senior at quarterback there's a look at Jeff Powell he is a senior hundred and seventy pounder and Jim Miller at fullback 230 pounds Tim McGee the all-american wide receiver from Cleveland 180 Eric Swanson tough as a doorknob 511 185 outside Swanson may be a very important personality in this ball game before it's done tonight as May the tight end Jeff Smith the first snap is coming up it is Watson coming to the bottom of the picture McGee goes to the top and Tennessee starts out with three wideouts you'll see that a lot I think tonight Daryl Dickie looks over the Miami defense and comes up throwing ripped it over the swats on his lips and his up around the 25 and he is rolled out down Ellis the offensive front very important for Tennessee the volunteers Smith the tide in 6-3 to 35 Daryl Smith the tackle to 55 derek galbraith that guard to 60 Todd Kirk the center at 255 Bruce Wilkinson a lot of people acting for all-american 260 and David Douglas 265 at the other tackle there will be some moving around of the offensive line personnel tonight in order to contain the likes of Jerome Brown and Durbin Jones in the middle the two big tackles for Miami can be records bouncing around pressures on and Dickie seeing the pressure coming turned to go the other way and had his speech slide out from under him Bruce Fleming was the man who intimidated him into that loss the defense for Miami lines up with McVeigh Jones Brown and fakin on the front washing Myra flinging their linebackers and the deep people are Ellis Bane blades and brown and there are some soft spots in that Miami seconder if the mime is secondary supposed inexperience part of their team three sophomores one freshman and only one starter returning ball is back at the 18 yard line Powell is out Keith Davis's in you've got movement along the front by Tennessee it appeared and so the volunteers now are getting themselves into a bit of a pickle in the early going as they are backed up once again by penalty no score we'll be right back [Music] [Applause] he may look like he was calling an audible now whether or not the he caught the Miami team encroaching or whether they got back at oh no he did and I'm surprised that the officials did not call it because the center is told to snap the ball once the defense charged into the neutral zone the barrels were both asleep the officials are out of the Southwest Conference window Shelton the referee umpire does Joe Darden I'll give you the rest as time allows Bob Garmin is in the front back to return it for Miami is Brett Perriman Bob Garmin comes in here averaging just over 39 yards but places the ball pretty well and has pretty good hang time Barrowman back at the 40 picks up two blocks on the corner back across midfield and thrown down around the Tennessee 48 yard line 41 yard cut the 12 yard return and here's the way Miami's offense will go as they're all Skippy looking and as they ride the river both Testaverde at the quarterback six-foot-five horn williams very fast and halfback Alonzo Highsmith is the hammer man in that running back for Michael Irvin is a terrifying speech through at wide receiver Ryan Wade who plays way outside can really move it out he had one of the big big plays in the season with pesto Bernie as they hooked up against Oklahoma yes brother many plays in the defensive secondary for Miami all right here come the Hurricanes their first possession at the that place to have your first possession and looks like this - Bertie is checking off himself only for sniffing now he's spending time out the crowd got to him and the Tennessee Volunteers having quoted a couple of defensive players Rick they were bouncing around and Confused it Tennessee's strategy has been to call - defenses let tester bury the quarterback look at one defense sabotage took the audibles of Testaverde by moving after he called his inaudible that's what happened yes the birdie seems the plate Tennessee changed their defense he was going right into the teeth of the deep end so he took a timeout this way they're big fellows will this fit the tide in the career of past receiver at Miami Oliver - Elliot - 55 they have electric coming off the surgery 240 Greg vertices 265 wall O'Connor ways to 65 and if Davis is in at 260 now after having spent a timeout thumbs up for its first snap of the ball game and the crowd gets on him right away Tennessee will lose their secondary coverage ball has handed off to the i-back Warren Williams six-footer 205 pound sophomore and the offensive front from Miami tore a hole in the Tennessee defense as he ran the ball all the way to the 39 yard line here's the way Tennessee lines up defensively with Cooper Scott mimetic and Kimbrough linebackers four of them Jones Ziegler and Miller Jones in particular outstanding in that group along with Ziegler inside premier peppers white Davis into the secondary where Tennessee pelvis the two starting corners into out second down in one Testaverde rolling around lost to the backfield a mix-up and he has sacked back at the 43 he that it was looking I think for Highsmith I've never got to do it Highsmith busted to play because he was supposed to come up the middle and take the handoff Testaverde turn no Highsmith he could do nothing but try to find the ground as quick as he could and so the loss is from the 39 back to the 43 where it'll be third down and 14 and Jimmie Johnson Browns inside line and Gina's worried about the crowd noise Keith he's worried about using audible when an indoor arena makes it more difficult than an outside field the correct Michael instead of the third and one its third down and about four and a half thrown down the middle is incomplete the pass intended for Willie Smith and coming up his own Greg Kramer the left cornerback then lock it out of there good play by Kramer the blitz is a both linebackers affliction so the Pythian has got to be open hence the verdict turns immediately but Tennessee was in a robber defense number one prima was coming over to club o Smith to tidy and he got his hand out front forbidding the completion Cramer goes deep now as the punt returner for the volunteers and Tennessee shows ten people on the front 10 of them up there they're going after Jeff Nichols the average right at 39 yards for kick their 10 orange shirts up there the short snap Cannell brettly's Breton takes off and finds a big hole on the right side and takes it for a first down inside the 20 if we talk about Jimmie Johnson doing the unexpected Tennessee is in a blitz Jimmy expect to get the cause broader statement flock to their kids and they set themselves up for a nice key back to the ball to the full-back Brett and he comes close to sports he was a 25-yard gate here it is from the Enzo Bruce Fleming the linebacker starting linebacker is the snapper on this play and Heath by the heck of a block there to get Bratton moving but Tennessee just took him sails right into the rush and opening up the hole by charging across my lap and here the Kings now first time here into the enzone passport but hang on Mike urban pulls it in but let's see about the flag at the Black team early Mike urban was wide open it's a catch Tennessee it appears it is it's touchdown Miami what a beautiful execution of picking up the Blitz man-to-man coverage challenging in the calm side Irving is a spectacular receiver number one famous fine discovery but he couldn't do it Irwin had nine touchdown passes eight hundred forty yards in reception beautiful throw on the Blitz Tennessee is hurting private gamble rolling the dice they lost and it's the worst thing that could happen to them to have Miami get on the board first because the Hurricanes will go right to the truster to do it Jimmie Johnson's theory is forced offense forced to defend don't let up we've got the best players we feel stronger more physical more speed let's use it force the issue [Applause] [Music] [Applause] all setup teeth by the gamble of running on fourth down and four here's the Blitz is coming on all-out blitz look at the blocking of this offensive line Testaverde has plenty of time when you met Testaverde setup step forward he is virtually always on target he is very very accurate perfect illustration on the touchdown to urban number 47 Miami used too much time before they got their kick away so now Greg cups after a five-yard penalty will kick him from the 15 so it's a 25 yard extra morn dry he stands in there six five good place kicker got some heat on him though and he throws it into the net Tennessee had a man flesh right in front of his eyes but couldn't quite get to it in time and so Miami is off to a seventh or nothing we deepen the Tennessee's first possession they had a lost play something they've got to avoid at all cost Oh second and three Dickey tripped over his tailback Powell putting in putting Tennessee into long yardage situation something they must avoid if they're gonna have any chance to keep possession this football against the Miami defense that's power deep sealing to kickoff taken from the 45 keep all fat because of the offside phone on the previous on that way and that time Selig just hooked it very badly without a bounds up around the 10-yard line so that'll back him up to the four he again that advantageous table and now Howell hopes he'll have a chance to run it back you've got to play in the first quarter 1101 all comes back to the Holte now and power weights standing this time outside the goal line [Applause] that's hi he should have a shot at this one though it takes in four yards back he's coming bad choice fantasy once you hesitate on a kickoff return you cannot come out that end zone the defense on that close and they'll stop you inside the 20 as we look at the plate very impressive by my mine is offensive line certainly wasn't the volunteer story so I wasn't no ball is on the 14 yard line something Tennessee didn't want to happen I miss going very easily and being backed up on the second possession therefore same play that started the other possession the opening play for Tennessee in its previous possession with the six yard pass to Swanson and they've got about the same thing this time one thing that Tennessee feels about behind is secondary they can't catch the ball on short passes in front of as we looking Timmy Johnson who went to Miami last year as Shellenberger left took over and has an 18-6 75% winning record very confident young man and an excellent coach this time Tennessee shows only two wideouts out of the I formation pitch goes back to power Paulo gets to the line of scrimmage and that'll just about do it they might get us front Chris to the 20 they'll be looking at third down and four in Tennessee continues to use the three wideouts my men are going to come full glass with their big defensive ends which means if Tennessee can't making a yards inside Keith inside of those defensive end it's going to be a long day old Darrell Dickie trying to find time to throw some passes alright Jeff Smith number 81 the tight end has come off the field Miller's come out at fullback you see again with three - showing blitz blips is on whistle stop it delay of the game zero showing on the timer as Dicky was calling a check off and I think he ate up is Malaya game another mistake by Tennessee third down and nine now for Tennessee equation again by Miami but Vicki runs out of the pocket looks for some help dives get a marker he'll be closed again depends on the spot it looks like they're going to give him the mark near the 25 and that'll be a first down what a story Darryl dinky 24 years old fifth year senior and played very little football was just sitting around waiting for the chance being prepared should he get the opportunity with Tony Robinson their great quarterback was injured and Darryl Dickie has come in completed 64 percent of his passes thrown for only one interception and 10 touchdowns he's the son of Doug Dickey the former coach in their athletic record and it's the first first down of the ball game for the Vols of all swung out to McGee Tim McGee the all-american wide receiver up across the 30 and near the 32 let's go back for a recap for those of you switching across your tiles now having had a decision in the Rose Bowl we're in the opening quarter of the Sugar Bowl Miami leads seven nothing and this is the touchdown play Vinny Testaverde the quarterback lofting it to Mike Urban wide receiver urban you see with his great speed all alone the pass on the money the kick was good and it's seven nothing in Miami got that touchdown resulting from a fourth down and four run out of putt formation duck Dickies son Darrell delivers the ball sharply but Joey clicks scales has no chance at all because when the ball arrived so did Tolbert pain and Tolbert vein is particularly sensitive to footballs thrown in his area because Tolbert Bain was one of those in the neighborhood when doug flutie had his miracle a year ago and told but Bain died won't anything like that to happen again they he has had a fine year as a defensive cornerback played that play very well and closely holders yardage to minimum weight scales his demand at the bottom of the picture [Applause] extend about a yard and a half for Tennessee and they're going to throw in short go underneath and get the first down the fast part by the full-back Howard coming out of the backfield William Howard a sophomore from Lima Ohio how long can tennessee continue to throw the nickel and dimed passing I don't know I'd say it's flexible that they can continue to be lucky enough to hit these short passes three of them it took to make a first sound ten yards is how it grabs it pull the first man only a four yard game Miami will get a little bit closer and a little bit closer to Keith and they'll pick one of these off in just a minute Nicki is 5 out of 5 for 25 yards so that further defines what you're saying play five five completions and five tries for only $25 he's going to throw it again on a deep drop this time and goes down the sidelines with it it is not intercepted even though it was in the hands of the Miami man he had it when he was out of bounds the man covering was Tolbert maine covering Tim McGee and he had something to do with Bain nothing old of all people the key is a spectacular receiver all-american his job is to stop McKee from release and outside and he did it when McGee got pushed down he lost his footing he did not have the acceleration and it was just a matter of well it was intercepted enough so that me hit him in the back there and knocked the ball loose and knocked him out of bounds in it second down and 10 for Tennessee [Applause] Hickey is calling a check off [Applause] they get it away just in time that ball is going underneath again it's Tolbert bain the man over there that apparently want to pick on vain because they threw the ball to Swanson that time right in front of him who paid six foot to one ninety it has pretty good speed Keith let's look at the well the big matchup to the ball game 98 Jerome Brown which just personally destroyed Oklahoma is trying to rush inside Galbreath reaches in and grabs it a little bit with the right hand and got away with it yeah it got away with it third down and ten we got mcgeehan thick scales toward the bottom of the picture Nikki's past Estonia Frankie Maki's my as he comes to the 49-yard line when you have a man of the quality of Tim McGee with his great speed coming across the middle it's terrifying and he was no more than a step and a half from being long gone McGee called 50 passes last season consensus all-american as he said he's doubly quick when he's even he's leaving Keith's has no question about it he's coming across right glades number 36 also a world-class beat who's a state champion in the fourth or in high school had been his speed by the score first and volunteers are up on the 149 to Miami leading 70 nothing first quarter you've got seven minutes to go in the first period Darryl Dickie quick to the side waist response once in his nailed hard but he's got six yards as he catches the ball at the Miami 45 Tolbert vain brought him down and here's Tim Brent Keith because this is an indoor Coliseum it is holding the noise it is deafening down here on the field so as you watch Daryl Vicki he is using hand signals instead of audibles to tell the receivers what to run what patterns to run they're using hand signals now and he apparently he wanted some verification to me because he had just called timeout we got a Tennessee man or no it's a Miami man down on the field so that may be charged here to Miami we're still waiting for word on the injured Miami player they put a splint on his leg and it is Kevin faking here's what Jimmy Johnson says about Vinny Testaverde as far as Vinny Testaverde he's the best football player in the country I think because of what he accomplished in the big ball games Vinny Testaverde played like the best player in the country well he may well be and it's not this year how about next year but I think there's there something here I want to get this in Frank that Kevin Fagan who it was an all-american himself has just apparently re-injured a leg they've had to strap him up and carry him off the field and what a heartbreaking experience that is the ball is down near the Miami five at second down and four Nikki in trouble fix the wall outside the Powell Howell alludes to and picks up the yard this is the first time that we've seen Tennessee use the option play this is faking right here as Keith has already mentioned he was an all-american player played on the national championship team of two years ago he's missed most of this season with a back injury and a leg injury weighs about two six days and key man in his defense and rushing the Tennessee quarterback Darryl dick third down a long three Tennessee at the Miami 44 Vica getting some pressure gets it away Creech scales it is Swanson and Eric can't get to it as Don Ellis covered him like a blanket go indeed Eric Swanson came in to Tennessee from San Bernardino Junior College 185 and 511 and brings up fourth down and the long three and Tennessee will punt well Tennessee did use about what about seven minutes off of the clock six to seven minutes at least they didn't get the touchdown but they gonna end up with good field position as far as Miami being backed up Jim Esmond is in the punt this one not Garmin no pressure knuckleballs it down feel a fair cut Miami will have the ball just outside the 12 years timbren heathcote and his Fagin's right knee he injured it he said he was blocking he got a lot of pressure and then somebody fell on the outside of his leg and it caved in they're gonna tap tape it with ice and he's gonna sit out the rest of the first half they will check it out at halftime and see the extent of the injury but it doesn't look like he's going to be back it in his right knee and it caved to the inside when he was hit that's been huge keep going back to telecine there we go haven't you get a chance to see if they gonna have the courage to blitz again and cover man-to-man and roll the dice Oh will they give up after that easy touchdown pass to Mike urban early in the first quarter the spot of the football is out near the 13 where the hurricane will go first down the thumb with Williams and Highsmith the setbacks behind any testimony double wide perfection Hennessy bouncing around Highsmith and Highsmith Pop's it up near the 15 that's a pickup of about two and a half yard Marco Vanek number 59 P is well the pleasant surprise for Tennessee they tried and linebacker they try to get Heidi in and finally moved into defensive tackle and he's become a star right there was a beautiful example of how to with the guard number 73 elect now and move it over what do we say whip the blocker find the football and make the tackle that's what he did Highsmith has left the football game dragging an ankle Nell Blackman has come in right fourth and four and back those tests ability to throw to the sideline Phyllis Smith Miami at the wrong 24 they lead 7 nothing I have managed to go in the first quarter and flaxen whistles stuffing deep Tennessee is not backing off right now they're lined up in what might be a nine man rush they can't rush with sex come back to 70k cry she was seven come back with eight there are your officials we gave you the referee and the umpire buddy Coleman Don George George slansky beau Hicks Iran Murphy making up the rest of the Southwest Conference crew mentally against to Miami I tell y'all this movement by the Tennessee defense is a little unsettling to Miami - what bacon has ligament damage with [Music] at miami testimonies pass it down for you almost intercepted and then almost caught by Warren William defect could have been disastrous for Tennessee you called it right the ball was thrown up four blades it looked like and it was overthrown Testaverde gets the ball a little bit high I think to the Seas trying to make him move a little bit rather just stay perfectly still in the pocket the blades number nine he goes over and had Williams number 24 have been a little more alert he would had clear sailing for such thing second down 15 safety blitz Williams bounces off one of his own men bounces outside and fights his way up just over the 25 so he picks up about six yards on that carry it'll be third down and nine the mine hurricanes of a very young football team starters by class only three seniors this team is one ten in a row been very very impressive since the Florida game the only season that they game that they lost they are going to be strong strong next year it impresses me about him as they win big games on that's the making of a lot of carrot film a lot of leadership to win on the road called a third down and eight just over the 25 Testaverde lofts it into the seat little mix-up that time with urban urban broke it off Testaverde wanted him to go on down the sidelines on the fly well put Keith when it was a stop and go Ervin's want to stop right up he'll pull up and right here guys gonna pull up right here trying to get the halfback to come up and play in but McDaniels number 87 wouldn't let him get time it's a little bit close to being interference could have been called the Miami people are booing right now but it was a stop and go stop and go and McDaniel got away with a point they goes into the punt Cramer deep for Tennessee legal should hit it around his fifteen or sixteen whoa some pressure on him and there's a flag Tennessee definitely terrible mistake that came flying in trying to block it and Charles Benton got all kicker and no ball and it's team to be first down my head well Keith is this running in the kicker it's a five yard pill discordant let the referee called I think this is roughing the kicker because with his foot still in the air he hits it across the leg I don't believe you can call that running I believe that's a 15-yard penalty kicks in an automatic first down but that's a referees judgment call tennis it's 15 yeah this is two mistakes p5 a special team of Tennessee I saw Tennessee worked on two days ago on the kicking game for an hour and a half trying to win the game of the kicking win the battle of the kicking game something that Johnny majors has done so many times this year now he's made two costly costly mistake but why in the world that Tennessee man didn't at least realize the ball is gone and make some effort to avoid him but he didn't he just kept pouring right into it and it's a 15-yard call and it's just outside the 40 where its first down Miami and Testaverde on first down I'm gonna put it up down to the sidelines speed against speed and his incomplete intended for urban and coverage by on great creamer that time Kramer the sophomore from Baltimore hung in there and won over the redshirt freshman from Fort Lauderdale Florida urban number 47 is a premier receiving 6 to 205 pounds playing running a deep pattern against cream number one not an ordinarily a stardom playing for the engine Tommy Sims a senior in this ball game the ball slightly under thrown it was turned out to be adjusted jump ball and Raven went up and won the battle that is second down 10 3:59 to go first court that little officiating over there from number 54 deo jonne was the appointing did that right side of the miami line at that big tackles moving and sure enough he got the referees attention Keith I think it was a tidy and right next to the right tackle in Dale Jones pointing to it and the vishal soy move and the rule says the play is over get ball five-yard penalty this is kind of a funny thing fans watch this number 54 hey wait a minute look at their official wonder there look at wait a minute left hand it in right hand ahead of board now the officials right on target got to have a little fish date to go with it yes that's the fifth penalty in the ball some flags flying at second down and 15th as Miami comes back to the 35 all goes to Williams Williams a great change of pace as he turns it up via for about six yards he's a tough looking rider though he's easily youngster sophomore 205 pounds but he's got two or three gears doesn't he he does it's the best north/south run of it - but Testaverde is not only as you look at these numbers that this young man come here this year they're just outstanding but he's more than a strong arm he's more than an accurate arm he has the touch he has the willingness to work and he heated his teammates really believe it 39 he's got some people to help him he throws it underneath to Brenton and the pass is incomplete there's a penalty flag living over there on the 40-yard line one thing that Testaverde does like most quarterbacks Keith when he scrambles out of the pocket a right-handed quarterback likes to roll to the right flipping Miami at Tennessee scrambling shuffling defense now is causing Miami some trouble Oh panic number 59 plays right tackle we've already talked about the great year eight sacks he's had now the right tackle is Burt birth de sel is blocking him right there now back Bratton grabs ahold of him and Havana just falls down right there and Testaverde rolls out to his right as I said most right-hand quarterbacks prefer to scramble to the right they feel more comfortable throwing in that when they roll in that direction now Tennessee can refuse the belt enforce the punt but they're not they go take the tiller well as clipping it's 15 yards that's right in the old days that'd be a good call teeth but just test the birdie I'm not sure I'd want to do that I believe I'd rather get the ball but we have a dishes from your penalty is from the spot of the foul it yes it was a full 15 yards right at the line of scrimmage [Applause] Miami has speed at the wide receivers of touch receiver tied in big strong backs they've got all the weapons to go with testaburger third down and 25 rocky goes all day yeah back home in your love I changed my mind as Richard Brown did it he should have taken that kill when you can sack the quarterback they just got to make Testaverde move around a little bit let's see what happened it wasn't a blitz Keith it was just primarily three or four men rushing but the backs it does such a good job of covering the receivers that number 99 Anthony highway Richard Brown Richard Brown number 98 I'm sorry just kept pushing through they hadn't made the play Tennessee ought to get pretty good field position out of this now if they go steps quickly out of the end zone hits a kick that's gonna come down to Cramer at the 46 of Tennessee dances his way back into my territory and goes down at the Hurricanes 41 yard line so the Tennessee Volunteers now first down at the Miami at 41 [Applause] [Music] Oxana numbers on that last possession by Miami Frank our statistician Dave burns and notes that Miami's possession started and ended on their own 13 yard line and in between all of that - had 11 boys hood grace the Tennessee defense though had to gain some confidence from that last possession Keith Davis is the eye pack now from the 41 of Miami and he's got it Keith Davis a freshman bolting down close to our first down they were marking at the 33 George Bower the middle linebacker of mine is the leading pack with 135 the son of the balm a great quarterback he's the one that patrols number 45 takes oldest son Kirk right there now what happens as Heath Davis number 28 comes flying by the high reaches out of that right hand and barely gets him down right there second down to Tennessee [Applause] Davis again cuts it back and he's hammered down right at the line of scrimmage well that was a good part hit by Victor Morris jr. from Deerfield Beach Florida his number in the Mickey people my name in linebackers line up about three and a half or four yards deep and they're all three what Jimmy Johnson lost refer to him is get man third down and three now Nikki a little quick buck to the sidelines good for the first down that's the Miami 29 yard line making the catch quick scale the timing has to be perfect when you throw the little quick pace because if it's delayed just a fraction a second it's an interception 101 change the play at the line of scrimmage number 18 Fulton is right there on top Bobby the pass had to be perfect time to make even the four yards Daryl Dickie 64 percent completion ten touchdowns one interception looks pretty good throwing those short passes keep down on courage Davison Howard in the backfield ship the key inside inside in the twin set he's going down also safety man deke pumps to the right and then throws a perfect math touch right into swing blade to safety man and LS number 29 here's the key 50 receptions all-american outstanding speed right perfect timing receiver in that position has to block out everybody else on the field he just feels like he's out there by himself because he knows he's going to get hit it's first down and goal volunteers at the miami 7 yard line Davis about the six brought down by Jerome Brown number 98 you might want to put your eye on number 98 in the white shirt because he'll keep you entertained you can't miss him he's about six three two hundred and eighty pounds just an all-american football player virtually impossible for one man to blocking the set up Kurt tried to no good first quarter is over Tennessee is threatening as Miami leads seven to nothing it was in the fifth game of the season this young man Tony Robinson the starting quarterback for Tennessee went down with a severe knee injury one of the most exciting players of the country that's when Tennessee's offensive team at the change its personality from a gem bowling type to a conservative possession type that's where Darryl Dickey took over it's second down and goal from the 6 yard line nano [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] Carlos Rivera head of the plays old Darrell thinking to brush the Blitz is on no one walks in Dicky retreat and he finds lake scale wide Jeff Smith wide open for the touchdown too tight in Frank I keep telling you the tiny haha the tide is back tonight water back is standing still and the defense at the end is rushing now let's see how Smith got Sawada to give all the credit to therapy people avoided the reporting the rush and laying the ball out finding the receiver laying it out to the touch keep the first half of this first quarter was all Miami the second half of this first quarter was all Tennessee well the Hurricanes made it look so easy that first time it was almost deceptive I think but now Tennessee looking back fighting back and they pulled even at seven JCPenney is the deep man or Miami and he's a yard people the end zone and penalty flags all over the field as penny comes out to about the twenty three usually when you see penalty flags like this is blocking below the waist of some kind on a kickoff return in college you cannot block below the waist is holding on this particular one but it's very difficult since you cannot block below the waist it's hard to get the good blocks don't kickoff returns you had a quorum on the call because there were four flags he must have been very obvious when they were three or four arm old now let's see what Testaverde can do keep he got rushed and could not hit the wide receiver when he was rushed and then when they public he's been fine the receiver hey one thing about the big guy though from Elmont New York he does not discourage no he doesn't keep and he has worked so hard Jimmy Johnson was telling me that Testaverde spends as much time in the weight room isn't linebackers and defensive ends and Jimmie Johnson is really upset about something let's the fifth miami penalty that's one reason but secondly i don't think he agreed with the holding call as it was made but nonetheless it is Miami's ball first down back on first and ten Highsmith is back in the backfield and he's got it and he moves it just over the twenty one thing that nine is gonna try to do Keith is run what here's here's Jimmy Johnson he's really upset what happened all good gracious that's how you call things like that don't be so picky I can hear him right there but Miami wants to run straight at Tennessee stunts Tennessee's doing a lot of stunning the best play is to run right out of it let it pick himself out of the clock alonzo highsmith picked up six second down and four it's Alonso again with the ball and he turns the corner puts the helmet down and rattles right into Andre creamer and it seems like everything in the ballpark is going to Kramer's side so far ramos playing the left cornerback in miami runs about 65 to send the center there plays to the right there being a right handed team most teams do that keep their right-handed if their quarterback his right-handed easy to run hold the ball to the right than it is running awkward to the left first quarter orange bowls for Penn State leading Oklahoma 7-nothing here we are tied at 7-7 with Miami Penn State Oklahoma all laying claim possibly to a national championship all is given away to Daryl Oliver with a very sore back Darryl trying to play some they need him because he's very good but he could not bounce that one outside and get much out of it what we're seeing the previous possession by Miami they threw every down virtually every down Tennessee covered them now they're going back and saying if you want to cover us we'll run the ball right at you they feel like they can win either way you choose what the defense is wants defend will do the opposite second down and nine or the Hurricanes Herriman and brown the wide receivers Testaverde throws it underneath the ball caught by faraman he's knocked down up around the 33 yard line Tim Brent Keith Tennessee defensive coordinator kenny donahue worked overtime with his defense preparing for this ballgame and put in an entire noon blitz package he swore the players and the coaches to secrecy seven or eight new blitzes they've also been one of five and six defensive back so one of the miami foes that they really focused in and was Florida State because they sacked Testaverde seven times in that game thus far Tennessee's had good success they're causing problems and there even at 7:00 in the second quarter third down and four back those many underneath broken up pass intended for Smith what myth has the ball knocked out by Darren Miller and he's beeping something but the official call passing appears on the far side Keene all the way across from the hey smart to call pass interference well there was a man looking right at it on this side and he didn't call you exactly right Keith the one the little fellow there is talking to the referee came all the way across from the far side and called past interfere he's won Hayes back to the receiver [Applause] let's see if we can tell what happened right over the middle Testaverde is coming underneath [Applause] number 45 I can tell she's got contact underneath both hands were up I can see that very very pinky : it's a first down for the gain oil is up on the 37 going on first down backside pressure gets his pass away it's caught for a first down picked up by Andre Brown a redshirt freshman and caught it him up to 48 Tennessee was planned very salt they were only rushing for people Brown had plenty of time Testaverde zarm is so strong normally gets that ball to the corner very quick beau Vanek number 59 8 sacks one of the big play defensive lineman that they expect to have a good game comes close to getting Testaverde before he threw the ball mark for Bennett just a sophomore now Miami moving at 477 with 12 he's checking off [Music] Tennessee plan to Blitzen goes to the lungs Ohio Smith outside running down at the line of scrimmage dead ball alive he kept watching the ball and moving with a ball and suddenly Tennessee realized that the black blade thing was alive and all that except on it well chief you called it perfectly I'm not sure what happened it looked like Highsmith was on the ground let's see no the ball the ball is out low to go to the ground right there and Tennessee players trying to get it Vanek couldn't hold it rolls out now the Tennessee the own power over here called about we look at it again but there's a double foul over here against Tennessee bench I believe no it's against by any I guess for saying something I mean well I don't blame Miami for saying something because I still after looking at the replay I thought the ball was down now who owns a football Tennessee owns the football I believe [Applause] but they're going to be penalized for what I don't know the ref bill the official on this side after the referee called the ball it's gonna be first in 25 teeth what is first in 25 they've set the change somebody yell from the bench something happened from the bench I believe their ball non-contact foul on the offense first down in 25 keep at home you know that comes from the bench let's watch a banach right here number 50 59 how he strips the ball out right there that right hand comes in knocks the ball out it's a good call this was a right on top of it right now watch Highsmith come down on top of the ball that's but not so and big turn around here's Tennessee has it first down in 25 at their own 39 and pinkie back to Florida hurry as van Stubbs is the leading SEC man Paul all the Hurricanes came flying around to get him and here's Tim grant I just talked to some of the coaches that are over here with the referees came home to explain a call they said the penalty was for spiking the ball after the play that's where they tagged on the penalty against Tennessee good question spike and it's a penalty game Tennessee he got too excited when they picked them all up they spiked it the loss is back to the 32 now they've got about a quarter of a mile to go to set up the screen and the wall is slapped away and stubs turns Nikki upside down the Tennessee turnovers has been truly remarkable they helped +21 lead the nation in turnover margin you can see that the opponents and 3716 for Tennessee of plus 21 and the thing that Johnny mages told me he talked about that that's good coaching good concentration and a lot of luck two teams third down and 32 for the volunteers Miami now three four five defensive backs again along the ball give it to Keith Davis Davis gets it up over the 40 up to the 42 and there is another penalty flag and I think Tennessee's flag before you either illegal use of the hands or holding one of the other umpire dropped the flag yeah we're having a lot of penalties similar to the Alabama by Aloha Bowl the first half was just terrible it was it was nothing but a parade of striped shirts well this crew has taken over the ballgame - that's the 10th penalty of the ballgame we've got 11 minutes and 20 seconds to play in the first half I don't know if they're fouling I guess they're folly we have mutual officials in all bowl games except the Rose Bowl and the Rose Bowl still has a split crew a big tenant packed in these officials are from the Southwest Conference and so were the ones in the low hopple do you I don't think I said much the Spartan interpretation of football and there's interpretation of the holding penalty around Keith I think some toughies are more strict on the illegal use of the hands well I know there's a lot of obstacle snake-bitten basketball but not so much Tennessee has about what 50 yards 42 42 to go runner to run the draw play again a screen and honey get rid of this possessions going backwards get that get rid of that thing it still trying to hook up with that screen pass get it over here to McGee and McGee is level Jimmy had no chance and so now it'll be fourth down for Tennessee Keith the Tennessee problem started with a spiking of the football instead of hand the ball in Miami Territory they're putting from their 18 its fourth in 45 and they better hurry up and get it out of there and they do and it's Perriman back at the 39 put him down at the 44 towards the 42-yard punt and a five yard return seven seven four game 10 13 to go first and Johnny majors the fourth right fellow coaching at his alma mater says this about how he'd like to try to beat Miami I think to beat Miami we're gonna have to win the kicking game I think we're going to win the turnover ratio have a few more breaks go our way and have to keep the balls some away from Miami's offense if we're gonna win the Bobby Johnny of course an all-american tailback at Tennessee finished second of the Heisman voting back in the mid fifties to Paul Hornung Testaverde turned I think she had some movement over there on the top side of the line from the Miami hurricane one of the things keep that causes so many penalties in this dome is you cannot hear the quarter but remember the Penn State Alabama game when bear was complaining so his team got about seven eight motion penalties you cannot hear the quarterback finally bear just said snap the ball you lamb and wait for the defense move and then you move trying to boy to all side penalties motion penalties [Applause] the 11th flag Miami's had six Benghazi file false start offense first down so instead of first intent its first 150 will the Canes back to their own 39 the 7-7 time this is Oliver and he's got a problem at the 35 problem was led by Richard Brown number 98 now it's second down 2:19 [Applause] Testaverde is back he's got a new man the pressures on and equity back inside the 15 day Oh Jones and let it more the big orange the big learn that time as they just came pouring in on Vinny Testaverde Dale Jones 54 out quick snow offensive tackle right there three of two other teammates of old topo Testaverde a non man all-out roll the dice type of a blitz something that we saw with the Kenyan knew against Doug Flutie lace missing two years ago I kiss applause left's the loss of 20 Frank the defenses are gaining more yards and the offenses in this quarter well Ken Donnie here we do with a defensive front like they want to draw play with Highsmith carrying on third down and a half a mile get across the 20 near the 21 and now Miami will kick it the practice two days ago and I saw that nine man blitz coming and I said Johnny you've got poor guts and I've got he said Frank we got no other chance we've got to give him some all-out blitzes to try to get Testaverde out of that routine he has the river outcomes Jeff Higgins 42-yard punt previously yes the block one Florida State block to duck out of there and get a little peel back here kick his to Kramer at the 39 God just one gets a little help now the pursuits gonna catch him and he actually have been better off if he'd just put his head down and ruin and gone straight on South instead of running sideways he winds up losing the yard on the return Bruce Fleming Miami's long snapper and very fine outside backer was shaken up on that last play but he got up walked off the field alright so we certainly hope he'll be all right he's a very important person for the hurricane right now Tennessee first down near their own 38 yard line 7 7 ballgame Dickey back to throw puts the pass and it is incomplete it was apparently intended for Tim McGee but it was underthrown while about five yards bounced in front of Don Ellis I think Tim McGee and Daryl Dickie were confused as to what the pace was Daryl threw the ball as a quick post route running inside and McGee kept going down the boundaries if it was a bomb go take off if he delayed it up there and let him run under it it had been sick Keith baby you have after 42 that's a pickup of for third down six coming up seven and a half minutes to go first half think both coaches have staffs and finally realized as tactics and strategy we're gonna have to run the ball some of the defensive linemen are going just kyo and give the passes of hard hard time here's Keith Davis whose best ever for Tennessee freshman rushing 684 he's also the first freshman emptily Tennessee in rushing third down and short six as they go to I am at ease off and Vicki takes off it's got a chance to he's got his first down he is after Miami 47 yard line [Applause] Darryl dick oh my crowd everyone is of him his daddy outstanding coach in Tennessee and Florida 24 years old 5th year senior look at him sidestep look at those moves his daddy couldn't do that I coached his daddy he couldn't do that at all well he's one of 250th seniors it at their patience rewarded this year the other is quest right there that little Walker passed down the sidelines trying to let Eric Swanson one under it but Don Ellis covered him up once again Tennessee picked up Keith the Blitz and tried to go deep with it just couldn't connect here's Miami only 43 yards passing in the first quarter that is way below their average that's why we're halfway through the second quarter that's current I'm wrong that's just unbelievable and you give credit for the Penn State defensive strategy of rushing Testaverde [Applause] second down and ten of all they keep back setting up a screen here that does not produce a whole lot Charles Wilson who has labored with injuries all season long and was the leading ball carrier last year for Tennessee getting into the ball game and gets the ball down to about the 44 and it'll be third down and seven the Miami offense to go back to the point was made a moment ago totals 69 yards there have been 45 yards and penalties so their net is only 24 yard so strange football anything much different than any other suspect their town Nikki back yes time pumps it throws it and it is incomplete oh I'll tell you that could be a Bennie blades has got it I've got a shirt a handful of shirt on Tim McGee and as a official looking right at it I don't believe anybody on the Miami team other than Bennie blades number 36 could cover man command here's Bennie blades right there reaches out and grabs him then McGee gets away from him both of them have his world-class speed then Kenny hits them again they've been the tackle then he gets his hand out in front knocks it then oh well get away with a few things Jim as Minh in to punt I snap he's trying to kill it deep and he's got a dandy chance here the ball is way up there and it forces the fair catch ball by Brett faraman faraman is standing inside the 15 it'll be Miami's ball at their own 12 there's just score and time remaining first half Miami comes up first down at their own 12 77532 watching and Testaverde set to man drops to throw wines up from left to right and it is incomplete blades depending on the play little Victor pepper how about that dick to Peppa's number eight who would not be starting except Terry Brown is had an injured foot in a Monday's practice blades has the leading yardage per reception per catch for Miami 21 yards touchdowns of 30 to 35 72 and 82 yards but the ball on the throne and five foot six peppers goes up and knocks it away Victor's a guy at UCLA victimized and their comeback to get that 26 all time the opening game of the season Testaverde turns gives to William Mann and Williams is up to about the 16 yard line before Warren is knocked down so it'll be third down and long now for the Hurricanes one thing is very impressive about the Tennessee defense Keith is the ability to tackle an open field Tellez equal the line back was all alone on an island and he made the tackle on that last play otherwise we've been a pick game third down and six they'll grow no pressure to the sidelines and cut it down by on break Rimmer intended for Willie Smith that Kramer comes up with another big play Prima's inside this time T he's covering man-to-man play-action fake doesn't fool anybody crane was covering that tight in he's running he's racing and he makes a great effort right here gets his hand out in front denying the reception had he been able to pick it off it would have been six points for Tennessee in the punt tiggles Jeff third punt of the bay Miami one of seven on their third down conversion tries so far in this game ten orange shirts up there they don't go they peel back and it's a low line drive kick picking back creamer finally gets back across midfield of the miami 49 tennessee in the middle of the field of the football 7/7 i at 4:44 to go first half turnovers just like bases on balls they'll drive yet crazy talking with Jimmie Johnson yesterday we talked about turnovers they get turnovers they get opportunities for their offense on the other side Tennessee turns the ball over so few times they only had 16 turnovers and Leben games they led the nation in turnover ratio and that's the biggest concern I have we have got to avoid the turnovers we've got to keep our tournaments to a minimum so far they have ball is right at midfield first down volunteers 7-7 time and Dickie hands the ball off and this is Jeff Powell and Powell hits down to the 44 and a penalty flag comes flying from the side man way over here on the side looks like the facemask of some 10 years over either five yards or 15 corners whether spearing is right they get scary that's 15 yards piling on or spearing after the ball carrier is down that's a break for Tennessee because it puts them way down Jerome Brown number 98 big strong all-american he whipped that block about getting above him Keith that's a kiss to how fair it foul he don't have to stay below he Chuck's the center and comes over and makes the play 278 it's amazing though when you see that that particular official make that call you almost know it's gonna be there but he has the he's the up not the only one it's got a good look at it from that angle and he was right on it and its first down ball comes inside the 30 the pitch comes back to Powell and he cuts it back inside he always 170 pound it is second down and 10 the ball is at the 29 of dickie options at down the line the power trying to get outside that's part way around the corner but um number 32 Selwyn Brown finally ran him off the field here's Timmy I'm trying to stay up on his marvelous job that Tennessee is doing defensively and helping out their offense now we talked about the defensive backs with creamer playing one side and peppers playing the other because they're two starters most experienced secondary men are hurt well what they do on their nickel package when it is second and long or third and long and you know the Testaverde is going to throw is they move creamer inside the safety bring in Terry McDaniel go to the Nickelback that's why we saw a framer inside and knocked that passed down in that last series I think I understand what you said third down and six [Applause] maybe the eight keep his worth mentioning again you've already talked about but Powell is a senior playing one year of football transferred from William and Mary number twenty-one to run track he went out for football in the spring Johnny majors had one scholarship left and gave it to him now Howard number 35 blocks the key man but there's the speed blades missing the tackle and finally Fullerton bringing him down not bein sane the ball game here it goes don't give it to him one guy has marked the wrong one when officials mark the ball short of the goal line and he will prevail yes he will because he's loyal he's through the bean bag before that ball squirted losing the celebrating start well I think he will prevail but he's not going to prevail there's going to be a touchdown here again right here what oho Miami trying to rush the pass and filling that oh I see why the ball fumbled no way he could have called ball he marked it they're seeing markets with a bean bag but he will hit back didn't see the ball he'll now see the ball didn't run us back was facing him to yield him McGee got the recovery in the touchdown I didn't see it come out either frankly until it was already rolling around I thought by then they'd wizard it dead but not so clearly a fumble into the end zone clearly recovery by McGee Tennessee leads it the extra three minutes of 28 seconds to play in the first half the Tennessee Volunteers lead the Miami Hurricanes 14 to 7 [Applause] here is the play for the touchdown the mine a defense a clam and look at the natural hole right there because of Miami llamas are charging up the field now fouled number 21 has the ball knocked out right there his Keith said clearly goes across the goal line and the amazing thing is that Tennessee has enough hustle normally the defense would be around but the two or three I searched they had the Miami defense were not alert they should have been around and had a chance together give McGee the TD and Tennessee the lead at 14 to 7 look at this step speaking the fumbles line here since the first series of the first game of the season my the Tennessee backs had not fumbled and lost the ball well since Daryl dick it took over at quarterback he set a school record of 100 how many packs are thrown in this he they're thrown 106 consecutive passes without an interception and he has not had one today put him all up 19 times today there you have it Tennessee offensive just pick them behind a part right now how long they keep doing it penny is three yards feet from the end zone and honey not a good decision jacy's brought down up around the 17 yard line so once again the team has to start inside it's 20 then the reason for this is Rivera's getting the ball up in the air getting good hang time long perry and Tennessee's coverage has been very good so far Tennessee he heard Johnny mate just say that he has to win the battle of the kicking game and teeth I repeat two days ago they spent one hour and 15 minutes working or I was impressed first down from the 17-minute Testaverde back sets up the screen militant Breton has it and now the big straw to jump across the 25 to the 26 about a yard short of the first down when you own you own post a young goal like Keith and the other team up litsen a lot use a screen but one of the most dangerous screens is right up the middle but it worked for about nine yards with Bratton catching the ball the Tennessee scoring drive one minute and 16 seconds for 50 yards put it on good for them check it down and one for the cane that urban out here one-on-one just a birdie might wind up here gonna throw he looks for urban they don't go deep they go strike with it and they looked up for a first down up around 2:30 for Tennessee with 226 on the clock a plan a little bit looser they're not gambling quite as much like that Keith and I think that smart football only three men rushing a little bit of a twist right there between the tackle couple and Scott 101 coverage Keith is already mentioned and one thing about Testaverde his arm gets the ball out there and plenty of times we'll receiver to catch it and run with a football she just burned you Heath burns look how much room is left on the field but a great tackle there and presented in additional yardage from the 34 first time there's blitz and a penalty flag and William just hill turning and Warren Rams his way across midfield but let's see about that penalty flag would be bring it back Keith it has to be demoralizing to the miami offense the state plays great defensive plays by the mouth the Tennessee defense Jimmy is really upset right now all he's got through his calm his team down he's got plenty of time his team is very capable of scoring many touchdowns they've been averaging 461 yards a game and against some good football teams holding offense first down when you get so many blitzes teeth as Tennessee is using and having success rushing the Tennessee offensive lineman is to reach out and prevent the sack the Canes have been hit with 70 yard penalty on first down Testaverde a deep drop again setting a screen again it's Breton Breton wandering around looking for some help and do it a pretty good job of helping himself out to about the 28 29 yard line well Vanek finally ran him down Bratton is 6 1 to 15 he's only a sophomore from Miami reminds me a lot of George Rucker Miami backs a big Keith as he just mentioned big and strong and Testaverde back reman left's away from the pressure dances away from from or throws the questions at the 35 have to pick up of the year that's Testaverde his best moving still concentrating down feet pick up of 5 yards of a yard we have a minute and 15 seconds to go on the clock well he makes it look so easy he keeps his polish gifts he came moves just enough to reset his feet get his body straight concentrate and downfield binding up open receiver this is far below his average 71 your one touchdown 8 out of 14 when asked to go 115 the play in the first half in that peak drop pass is almost intercepted oh my goodness Kelly Ziegler almost had six points Kelly Ziegler played on the same high school team as George Merritt did Keith they've the two linebackers down in Miami but the rush forces Testaverde to throw just the look move his feet just a little bit and the ball is underthrown and you're right Ziegler got his hand up he had gotten two arms up it could have been an interception ask n is equal number 49 sophomore linebacker leaning Packer loop 101 stops all right P goes out to putt for the ball Kramer is deep short kick but fair hang time and I'm great with a bear cats fall up at the 31 with 104 to go in the first half 35-yard punt Tennessee's ball first down just outside their own 30 they lead by 7 Tennessee just outside the 30 lead 14 to 7 both teams have two timeouts remaining Gerald Hickey back to throw steps away from the pressure you got a holding ball coming up against Tennessee I bet you either that or illegal use of the hands of some kind amazing thing about Darrel Dickey to me Keith is his ability to scramble he's not known for his running ability they've tried a couple of option plays which had a chance to give him the big play something they added just for this ball game but his ability to avoid the rush and still get the pass off is nothing short of outstanding referee Wendell Shelton walks off the holding call against Tennessee and it was pretty obvious and a flag came early on holding first down and 20 click scales McGee go wide 14 flags in this first half or 129 yard it's the to team Davis big play by Keith Davis but a penalty flag fumble if you wipe it out bubble comes loose mine he's claiming it Swanson was all sides he went in motion and turned up just a little bit T perfectly rod receiver them on the nearest the camera was in motion and pushed nine he will refuse the penalty and will own the football a Tennessee man is down around the 34 yard line with 51 seconds to play in the first half that really could hurt him it's Keith Davis hurt apparently it's Davis looks like 28 he was the man carrying the ball he had a big play out of it he had about 12 14 yards on when he went down under the pile ball came loose and he didn't get up you see the number 27 coming in to block the linebackers jump the gun just a little bit and he was all sides the right there blades number 36 trips that ball reached in and just pulled it out first bumbled by Tennessee back since the opening drive or the first game of the season Davis came off the field looked like either ankle or knee and now here's Miami with their best field position of the ball game to start a possession first half at the Tennessee 33 and Testaverde trying to cash it in in a hurry throws into the sidelines to Willie Smith good just short of the first time Linna Smith 48 passes this year keith has already mentioned 66 last year which is a school record of 114 career he's just a junior has another year to add on that 114 receptions by the way Keith he was a wide receiver in high school it has outstanding speed and knows how to get open second down for that same alignment had blades deep from Smith short when they come to this side except it's blades and urban urban short ball is padded down at the line of scrimmage couple bake number 77 766 seem to be the one he has batted down five passes this year let's see the left of your screen see if it was couple 77 right there six foot six big sophomore tackle lot of raw talent that's the best place if you keep sacking just get up in front Mary jumps up and knocks the ball down that's a six past will come out quick of the season well at the 26 start back still three and a half before yard one seconds and penalty flags and whistles stop on the game offensive tackle Patchen jumped offside just anticipated to count early didn't wait for the block [Applause] [Music] have a costume 5 you know one thing that Johnny made is a steady approach with off its third down [Applause] to Tennessee 32 best to 30 back pressure just as he throws urban pulls it in he's got a first down and he's inside the 20 at the 19 where he is thrown down mr. Bertie took our wallop but he released the ball just as the contact was made and he really had something on it the urban urban called nine touchdown passes this year you'll get a good indication how he scored so many most of them were runs after the catch one thing that Miami has done is pit from Sun of their passing yardage over 3500 in total half of that was after the catch their receivers at brigham speed good run us after they catch the ball they don't give him the mark inside the 20th a put it right there on the 20 Keith we're down to what 31 seconds Miami has one timeout left but 20 yards it's not a whole lot of real estate or Testaverde the company [Music] Tennessee rushes crushed only three men Keith an amazing thing to me their twist they they used the twist boy Lynette college team that I've seen not only this year but any year where one lineman rushes inside and another rushes behind him it's been confusing to the Miami blockers he only had a month to work 14 to 7 Tennessee's lead now being threatened by the Hurricanes first down 31 seconds to go the volunteers 20 and they all had effort on the Blitz the ball is thrown into the end zone for Breton and knocked away incomplete stick to peppers did his job no Tron's up the defensive backfield coach told me that peppers has had the best practices of anybody on the team he told coach me that he was going to plead with coach majors and get him to start in place of Terry Brown who's injured he's only five foot eight once again it's a jump ball situation but he makes the play preventing the touchdown second down and ten Testaverde under pressure in the grass down he goes ball is rolling around and finally covered and it's all the way back on the 37 yard line it's Dale Jones and or keep the one thing Testaverde didn't want to do is get sacked because they were in field goal range but Dale Jones is the pick play man for the University of Tennessee number 50 for just 26 times this year he's been involved in a big play Barry comes from the left of your screen grabs ahold of Testaverde the ball goes down [Applause] his meat wasn't down so we're still a live ball but then he recovers it barely right there did he get it back in and time to prevent Tennessee from recovery well that's the third sack to Testaverde and those three sacks represent a - 57 yards third down 37 and best of early trying to get to a little bit of yardage back to a few of those left side lines it's blue 31 and the clock stops at five and I would imagine Greg Cox will come on he's got plenty of legs in this business he will be 37 47 yard field goal well he's hit 148 this year so one thing indo-us Keith you don't worry about to win you the ball is lighted you can kick as they are though they say it yeah it looks closer indoors I mean just optically visually it's a little different look - Giff Doretta gets it down it was about three yards short maybe two yards anyway of crossing the goal posts and time has run out and Tennessee the Southeastern Conference Stefan's lead the number two ranked Miami Hurricanes at the halftime 14 for seven here's Tim Brant with alright I had to run all the way to the tunnel we get Johnny back out this team is really fired up I'm gonna ask you about the emotion of your team first all the talk of Miami the national championship did they feel slighted is that part of the motivation no not really I think our football team just has a tremendous amount of closest about them and they're just paying as well as I can expect him to play and ever standpoints have a few too many mistakes oh they're just been a great group of young men to be around it's been a fun team so far and we've got a big half ahead of us to him the defense has been spectacular tell us about your new boots package some of the different looks you given it well we've got a little time to work on him and Kim Donahue and that defensive staff gets together they've done a great job of getting these young men to play hard number one they've done a good job planning but the game's on over to him okay Johnny good luck the second half it's been a bit of a surprise and the Tennessee's defensive scheme has been able to confuse and had simply mess up they Miami attack but give Miami credit on fourth down and four they gambled here in the early going with the ball being snapped short - Mel Bratton and Mel takes that ball inside the 20 and sets up the first touchdown for the game when the defense are rushing like this they leave themselves a bottle to be blocked down and opened up a natural hole Jimmie Johnson is a daredevil he does the unexpected and he turned out to be a big play for him he calls it set up the field the touchdown pace here's Earvin number 47 going deep on crema number one and you can see that he's wide open it's a race into the end zone Irvin just the freshman six to 205 pound receiver pulls it in for his Tim touchdown pass but Daryl Dickie taken what tip and given him just picking away at him comes up here with a little bit of nimble foot dances away from pressure and finds Jeff Smith uncovered well this is all Darryl Dickies doings the fact that Miami had an all-out blitz they didn't block the defense it in and and Darryl was able to sidestep and he found the receiver Smith open and it was a big touchdown to give Tennessee a lot of confidence with Powell the star in this possession he however almost turned into a goat here as he takes the football down to the goal line that has the ball popped loose caroming into the end zone but fortunately for Jeff his teammate Tim McGee was there to cover the loose ball and to get the touchdown the second of the ball game for the ball one of the officials had call the ball down on the one-yard line but another fishel came up and said he saw the ball come out they had a hole and ruled that it was a touchdown but here again give credit to the alertness the enthusiasm the hustle of the Tennessee players who were down ahead of the ball care and recovered the touchdown and give massive credit to the Tennessee defensive scheme instituted by Ken Donohue and played for the people on the field plays like this Dale Jones number 50 for the big playmaker 26 big plays for the season here's another one of his sacks coming in this ballgame he was a key man for the man he coaches felt he was the man that could give him the most trouble and here he did on this occasion they took my me out of the field goal range I still believe yogi was right ain't over till it's over what do you think about the second half well Testaverde had six interceptions in the first three quarters against came back ma'am is confused the modernist I think what's obvious to me is a former coach is my Tennessee's out quickie the Miami offensive line I think Miami will settle down they'll get their blocking straight and Tennessee's gonna have to perform even better to win the second half all right we're at halftime as we said 14 to 7 the volunteers leading the University of Miami mine it was favored by eight coming into the ballgame and right now it's time for us to enjoy one of the great collegiate bands of the country the pride of the Southland from the University of Tennessee directed by Dr WJ Julian [Music] to be living here [Music] [Applause] forget the men who died gave that right to me and I gladly stand up next to you and defend her still today god bless the USA Lee Greenwood from the lakes of Minnesota to the hills of Tennessee the plains of Texas concede ascendancy from Detroit down to Houston and New York to LA where this pride in every American Heart and it's time we stand and say forget the men who died gave that right to me next today no doubt got less forget the men who died who gave that right to me and IV stand next to you and defend her still today [Applause] lead Greenwood with the University of Tennessee prior to the Southland marching band Tim Brant back on the sidelines with Miami head coach Jimmy Johnson and Jimmy the first thing I'm gonna ask you is about what adjustments you made to pick up some of those blitz packages that they've been throwing at you it has given you problems well you know the thing about it the crowd noise has bothered us you know we can't hold on to our entire offense and so what we're going to have to do we're gonna have to run the football a little bit more we talked to him about getting more of a rhythm you know we're sitting back and we're letting Tennessee take the fight to us and we're giving them much too much time between the plays and so we're gonna run the ball a bit more a little bit more rhythm take them out some of their places plus the penalties just killed us what did you tell them at halftime was it allowed vociferous meeting now we just kind of showed them some of the coverages and some of the that they were using ions and so that we could recognize them at the line of scrimmage and then we can go ahead and all go to some of our past plays the other other thing too defensively we land up long like on their touchdown we did not shift our land the right way I'm gonna ask you one other question Penn State is getting beaten does that make any difference to you right now max don't difference man it didn't make any difference before the ball game started we got to win this game he'll believe you're number one all right all right Jimmy all right let's go back upstairs Keith he said it wasn't a loud locker room he said he got after the officials a little bit this team is not in rhythm it's not in sync he knows it they know it they just got to come out reestablish the offense and start playing football [Music] halftime stats read this way well the surprisingly that Miami has only a 111 yards have been averaging 460 Tennessee 69 rushing 75 passing amazing thing that 98 yards passing for Miami is way below what you would expect for a great team that they are I think the Tennessee has confused the Miami team enough that they a little bit tentative as Jimmy said they little bit cautious and they've got to somehow gain that momentum again and running as he said is the key way to do it knocking them out of that [Applause] Hennessey kicks off JCPenney circles under it in the end zone five yards deep in his country hopefully that was a good because Tennessee has just planted him down on the 10-yard line now let's go back on that a riverboat and have a look at some of the defensive folks here's big ol Richard Cooper had a good first half 270 pounds to Bobby Scott the nose guard obvious 275 and Marco Vanek 245 Ron Kimbrough Dale Jun big big play to close out the first half Kelly Ziegler almost to pass interception Darrin Miller working inside with Tennessee its first down for Miami the ball is right on the 10 yard line and Vinny Testaverde hands the ball to Warren Williams and he runs it out across to 22 the 21 and he picks up a first down the Tennessee secondary consists of Thomas Sims who did not start he's injured dragon leg Andre creamer started for him Harry Brown did not start either he's hurt Victor Peppers got that call Chris White had nine interceptions during the season and Charles Davis is the free safety so it's first down as Miami gets a little working room now and Testaverde is trying to check it off and change the play give it to alonzo highsmith and already i think we see a little bit of a change in the philosophy early on by Miami because they send out their offensive lineman it's pretty much the same group that started and they're running the ball right at Tennessee [Applause] here's 47 Irvin the wide receiver let's see what happened to him on the running play Wow prema number one grabbed his helmet pulled the back that could have been a now a Testaverde goes to the pass on second down and six dumps it off to Williams and Williams picks up a first down and they're right that kid can run north the South Williams is a to hunt and tail back to the leading rusher for Miami the only fact that they've had rushed for over 100 yards did this I guess against Louisville excuse me did against Colorado State here's the rush once again the forcing Testaverde to move around a little bit and they say if they can do that they have a chance here testa bird didn't want to run himself ray wise he gives it those best ball carrier it's a nice game got a first down for them again it's Williams carrying and this time there is a little more solid contact on him as he reaches the 40 one thing that when you're not playing very effectively come out and run the football and establish the momentum establish the alignment hitting somebody make the defensive lineman of Tennessee stay at home and play more base defense and that's what mine is trying to do to slow the Tennessee rush then second down and six as Williams picked up four 41 remember this possession started back on their own ten on second down Testaverde gets the heat and get sex he's down inside the 30 what once again Tennessee using the surprise blitz this time Darren Miller the linebacker delays his rush watch him over to the Rhine who comes all the way twisting no one touches him Testaverde has no chance he cannot escape because health number 55 Kimbrough comes from the other side they remember two Tennessee is playing without their starting quarterbacks Sims and brown start us for four years in three years respectfully or not in the ball game ball is on the 31 yard line the fourth sack by Tennessee - 62 yards Testaverde is in trouble again the ball is loose it is not an incomplete pass it is covered by number 74 for the moment I don't know if he's able to keep control of it keep up leave it fell out and a cushy day Tennessee's got tomorrow dear mr. Sun the Tennessee defense has just absolutely Clarence Miami into a bloody state and they've forced another turnover Keith Benson twist again just three men rushing violently four men rushing and finally hit him from the backside the arm had not gone up and started forward therefore it's a fumble I mean both he had it but it slipped out of the grass and Tennessee recovered Rakosi looked like he had it but it rolled away from him in that Tennessee trying to cash it in as he rode Vicki grills it down at a 17 yard line to Tim McGee and it's good for a first down and it's the my MIT defense that is in serious trouble right now Jones is a 270-pound tackle Jerome Brown is 265 bacon hurt out of the ballgame now which tamasa Packer at 2:30 Myra backer at 225 and Fleming the backer at 2:30 its first down Tennessee the ball on the line is 17 the Valen leading 14 to 7 trying to take advantage of the turnover wall is given away inside running is Jeff Powell and Powell reaches maybe the 13 Kundera for Miami Don Ellis is the corner he's played all the way a redshirt freshman Kolbert pain is at a good ball game big at 6:21 90s any blades in there at 6 feet 205 and so in brown 511 and 190 the Tennessee office now grinding with the ball first down at no not first now second down at the 13 of my second down and six Nikki again goes to Powell and Powell is nailed for a two-yard loss by George and Myra at the 15-yard line George Bauer patrols the middle you take your best tackler put him in the middle and sake go to the football someone who wants to make every tackle and the hole opened up right in the middle Marv very wisely fires the gap penetrates into the profits at backfield and makes the play Tennessee trying they seem hurry hurry hurry and then they'll slow down and hurry hurry hurry didn't slow down anything to keep Miami a little off-balance so far they've been able to do it it is down over third down and eight and Vicki will throw that stuff away from the pressure now throws inside the five the fastest bird I might be first and goal volunteers what a pass by Vicki Thank You Sarge the rush again and stayed in the pocket humans Hawking discipline was good right here excellent protection stems up wait he's look at all the time he is fighting for that opening spot right there Rick he's going one location of the ball had to be perfect three feet three square four threes absolutely no more than that McGee nicely though then covered right there by the defensive back he comes back to the ball right there 18 they could not break it up in another tennessee duck Darryl Dickie 14 out of 21 can a young fifth year senior Upstate to potential Heisman Trophy winner where they just go for Tennessee the ball that's the 3 yard line of all his pitch back it goes to the big man Sam Henderson and he's inside the 2 down Henderson is 250 pounds a junior from South Bend and I think that's all you need to know why he's in the game here just lay your strength Tennyson has had a bad knee operation didn't play last year but 12 times he's been given the ball to make a first down a touchdown he's been successful 9 on the right there very close to the goal line good second effort by Hennis in the big fullback you certainly see how strong he was he had about five people on his back in hand went for another three yards he had those shoulder pads over those toes not much room to tackle from the defense Tennessee has got to spend a timeout because the 25 second clock was down to two as they came up to the ball so rather than make the mistake and give up five yards to penalty they spend the timeout you see the location of the ball there's your time remaining third quarter Tennessee's trying to cash in a touchdown here and take a two TD lead over favored in Miami Jarrell Dickey the Tennessee quarterback came out on the field waving his arms at his own partisans and now it's again trying to get him to shut up so his people can hear what he's trying to tell them it's second down and goal it is Henderson it is touchdown [Applause] [Applause] [Music] you know what Jimmy Johnson's right Frank his biggest concern is not national championship but when in this ballgame well we seen so many times the favorite team coming into a bowl game and not really being as fired up is the underdog team how many upsets that we've seen already in this bowl season by the underdog team extra point it's good deep Tennessee had three scoring opportunities and they finished what they started that's the mark of a fine football team the quarterbacks job have poise and covenants but put the ball in the end zone and then celebrate you notice the quarterback doesn't do anything celebrate until the ball is put in the end zone right here running off tackle the best playing football since I've been coaching run off tackle on the goal line right there now Tim Brant Keith you talked about Tony Robinson the all-star quarterback from Tennessee who severely injured his knee I'm standing with him now and I know you talked with Darrell Dickey the quarterback who replaced you he's playing a marvelous game what did you all talk about well you know you just asked me what was I looking at on the three I stopped looking with gear a little bit more down the middle but he's wide open and just continue playing the way he's been playing so you look to him to go to Magee now what was the mood in the locker room at halftime Oh everyone was far don't steal our thing was that it's not over with yet we still got 30 more ticks of the clock so let's go play ball how's the recovery of the knee will you be able to play professional football will you be coming back yes I'll be back I put down the crutches in January and everything will be all right all right good luck to you thank you Keith one thing that we should keep in mind we've talked about Florida State sacking Testaverde seven times in that ball games but then he didn't sack him at all in the fourth quarter Testaverde threw two touchdown passes and Miami came back to win it ten into the can quarterback draw boomba Tennessee's cut it no no that did they got it they lost it and elected picked their pocket and stole them all how about that and Big Dave almost came out of there with the first down a quarterback draws something that we wouldn't expect to see with Testaverde but he does run the v40 and for eight but he's not really a good experience ball carrier electing to come in there and just steal elect the number 73 just takes the ball right away from the Tennessee man 4th down and just inches Joel's time of 54 let's see what he does here Jones is coming back his Hardwick up and two fumbles this year good athlete he dies on the ball up it slips right out of his hand then someone else for in fact his prema number one had a chance elector gets it to punt Tennessee's you'd have pretty good field position if creamer handles it and he does at the forty a 40-yard punt its first down Tennessee at their own 40 they lead 21 to 7 in the third quarter [Applause] Darrell Dickey having quite a day Tim Brant yesterday talked to his coach Johnny majors who said this Daryl dick has done an amazing job we couldn't have asked for a quarterback to perform better under circumstances or under any circumstances but to come off the bench and been a few 3 or senior only starting one game before Darrell did it because of he's a good team man he's a good performer he stood as a game very thoroughly he came to have a good football background he does come from a good football background his dad was a fine player and a great coach first down for the Vols at their 40 I'm remaining third quarter 7 and 21 Dickie hands the ball off it goes to jet power [Applause] haha what a story that kid is he that cannot believe college is unbelievable you hear a track man transferred from William and Mary has hit Russia on that hit yard but if we see this play again t at the bottom of the screen the defensive end moves to the outside and watch the defensive D and he moves to the outside and look at the hole it's a natural hole right there they don't have to block anybody but the linebacker most number 92 and then it's a footrace and blades who has got world-class speed look at blades now the 36 he can't catch him and blades wolves on high school record for the 400 yard - in the state of Florida number 21 a walter mitty story to the left of the screen 25 mil elects the block right there and look at the hold it was a natural hope amazing I will repeat 36 blades has world-class speed he cannot catch this track man from William and Mary playing his feet here now the block goes roll Brown is the keep walking him to the inside has to be the play and been done by the tackle 68 Wilkinson all Southeastern Conference senior content our second team all-american he brought him to the inside making the running room for Powell to go 60 yards for the touch the longest run from scrimmage against Miami's defense this year oh there's some testimony to the as the kickoff now goes way back at the end JCPenney's and I've had enough of this get my helmet busted at the Tim I'm gonna let that thing go two seats will at least get it to 20 you know Johnny majors told me as we look at Darrell Dickie and I rotoma my page here Keith would it be something if Darrell Dickie upstage and stole the show from the great Vinny Testaverde that would be some story to write about but Tennessee people for a long long time but Johnny majors had a great statement he said it's amazing what a team tell accomplished when no one cares who gets the credit when no one cares who gets the credit then you've got a chance to be great that's what Tennessee is though that applies in all things in all things Warren Williams is eaten up with the line of scrimmage by number 59 mark Pavelich panic again most pleasant surprise Tennessee him a young man just a sophomore good athletic ability couldn't find the place for the play Keith tied in linebacker offensive guard farming and putting the defensive tackle and he becomes a star he the right place for second down and 12 will also [Applause] down the middle underneath passes good and good for a first down - Brian bleeds and Tennessee's been able to keep brian blades pretty quiet today here's Tim Keith you talk about quiet I'm on the Miami sideline now and this team is shell-shocked instead of talking about adjustments and what the players should be doing now the coaches are just telling to keep their heads up keep their composure trying to get them around back up and trying to get them emotionally sound remember this is a team that talked more about national championship this week than he did about Tennessee now they're just trying to get back in the ball game pretty good-sized hill the fire Testaverde throws to the sidelines Willie Smith catches under bings own good for the completion up to the 38 Miami really needs a score here keep they've not scored since the first no the second series I guess something I guess is the first thing reasons the first water they were able to take it in score have not scored have not done anything since then but thinking about a national championship last year Barry Switzer learned the lesson he talked about the national chef championship before the Orange Bowl and got wax good by Washington and that seems to be the case championship runs again second down five and a half William works in there for about three yards of course I'm not sure sure it was Miami doing all the talking I think was in the main the media doing the talk it was and of course I think the minor coaches started it don't you know at the end of the season when they talked about they deserve to be national champions at Penn State loss and they start giving all the reasons why and somehow you get thinking about that and counting your chickens before they hatch even before the risk first you shared that they're down and three and it's good for the first town - Willie Smith Smith took a lick and the Tennessee man that gave him the lick is hurt some Darren Miller holding on to his right wrist boy will it Smith didn't get open he thought ID and all he's working on those lines back was trying to find the open spot Testaverde knows when the blintze is coming that Smith is working against the linebackers so he just lets him hand that ball look at the location of the throw just perfect right outside shoulder break - not the intersect you know who's been all over that field today and has played a heck of a ballgame is that criminal brain like hadn't been home in station he C really has they're showing cliffs they're showing the nine-minute safety play 11 men 11 men are up there within five yards of the ball Testaverde is set the ball is loose in Highsmith covers it for Miami at the 40 oh my goodness Tennessee had 11 people within five yards of the ball you got to have courage and I mean a lot of courage but when you put 11 of them up there they were determined that they were going to get to Testaverde and here Jones comes from outside he doesn't make him an aromatic again number 59 knocking the ball loose but recovered back to not see the number Highsmith Highsmith I have sex Christianity of anak again just as we call came around the block and made the play ball back on second down at the corner Testaverde gets it off intended for blades it is intercepted picked off by terry mcdaniel [Applause] McDaniel number 86 wide-receiver moved over to defense there's a challenge right there look at the speed that blaze has great speed but gracious did McDaniel run right by me to set that ball just a great play again by the Tennessee defense well time is already an ally of Tennessee for nineteen to go in the third quarter they lead 28 to 7 they've just intercepted Testaverde they have the football first down just short of their own 19 yard line terry mcdaniel came out with that last interception and Dickey now with an audible call hands the ball to the tailback that is Wilson Hilton Charles Wilson runs it out to the 23 as flags go down again it was interesting to me Frank that the first person out on the edge of the field to welcome McDaniel after his interception is Ron Zook defensive backs coach McDaniel is only a sophomore John Major's told me that Ron's left well the brightest young man and coach that he's ever seen and when he's playing this man I say I didn't think that my Tennessee would have a chance to cover a man for man as they have in this ballgame because Miami has outstanding wide receivers they if you look at their record that's just unbelievable and yet they have all except for the first touchdown Tennessee backs then outstanding just have to give him full credit penalty here is against Tennessee selwyn Brown the strong safety of Miami helped off the field shaken up and in to replace him is Kevin McCutchen here's Tim Brant Heath they're working on Tennessee inside linebacker Darren Miller he has the badly bruised right hand I mean the top of his hand is just navy blue it is swollen their patented up now and taping it they're gonna see if he can put some pressure on it take a lick they're gonna try to get him back in the ball game but it is a badly bruised hand he's played well for them lavoisier fisher is his backup a senior at Tennessee with that penalty is backed up inside the ten inside their own where its first down and deke shoots one down the middle it is incomplete off the hands of his tight in Jeff Smith I saw I thought the the fellows name Smith both might have a big day today Willie has had but jeff has been pretty quiet here could have been a real big play for the ball Smith's breaking inside the defensive backs there's Bain than 18 right on top Bob when the quarterback raises up and throws the ball the defensive backs do not retreat so it has to be timed perfectly for it to be successful second down from the 9 second down and 20 the air comes Wilson Charles Wilson is hip had his feet taken away from him by number 92 Winston lost Moss had arthroscopic surgery and has bounced back to play tennis he wants to be real careful with the football third and long yardage just don't give Miami any thing easy and they have it all here why should I say that they had seven fumbles in the last seven games and then it lost one today when Davis turning over anything love any Testaverde they're on the bench it stirred down about 16 they were the ground game give it a Wilson and Charles runs it out across the 20 near the 22 and now they'll have to punt it away one of the things that's sort of missing here and I'm reluctant to say it because he's he's done the job for the Garmin and Asmus both for Tennessee but they don't have that big booming punter this year would you go to Tennessee you expect to see some guy because 10 I didn't knock it 50 55 yards but they don't have him anymore well the head - Paul - looks back to back in Holland both Amish right in half al Shabab Garmin [Applause] he's out there now pressure on gets it out good kick oh my goodness he's fired him up Keith that's the best one of the day for anybody this is Perriman now he goes at the 37 so Garmin really nailed at then be 52 yards at 221 to go on the third quarter [Applause] 221 to go third quarter Miami what a good field position they're only 38 trailing 28 to 7 Tennessee's defensive people moving around Testaverde drops looks drops rolls puck caught over the middle for the first down at the volunteers 42 with Brett Perriman number 33 coming across the middle to take the hint and make the captain as we look at the play a camp airman comes across beautiful touched by Testaverde right in the middle perfect throw Miami is not London that makes Tennessee play a face defense I can't get all those blitzes since mine is not going into the huddle you can't call on Tennessee encroached on the flavor but got away with it Testaverde zips to the sidelines Perriman again steps out he's beyond the marker he's got another first down a minute and 57 to go in the third quarter when the team does runs without the huddle the defense have a Czech defense and they can play and normally it's a base defense nothing fancy so that's what Miami was trying to do right there but look at Bob Garvin who just punted the ball 52 yards and the night that raised his average to 45 all is on the Tennessee 31 [Applause] and a gift take the Hubble that time first down to the games you stick it in there back in the game pressure on Testaverde gets it away down the middle and it is incomplete and penalty flags all over the place and that do believe you've got a foul call coming here well if it's a pass interference will be a 15-yard penalty the college rule different from the pro rule and different than he was a couple of years ago so it'd be a 15-yard penalty the penalty is further than then 15 yards so Kramer and McDaniel turn Perriman into a sandwich right here number one Kramer hits him right there before the ball gets there that's clearly a foul then Kramer goes in front hits the ball and goes up in the air but the foul they oughta been completed 15-yard penalty frame has had a great game he came field down tast about that one play he's been outstanding all over the field tonight wasn't due to start ed ended starting as films and Brown the path backs all season long injured and not playing Miami first down at the Tennessee 16 Testaverde back in a hurry pressure on him he's going to get sex back on the 22 yard line a four-man rush mark Havana a four-man rush meaning that the defensive backs had just covered all the receivers Testaverde was trying to hold a ball as long as he could let's look at the comparison of the two quarterbacks 14 out of 22 for deke 100 yards one 18 out of again pressures on him the passes away and a penalty is gone again gosh defect that could go anyway yep could go either way because the receivable is wide open Willie Smith his offensive interference I thought it might be that Keith because the receipt was so wide open I didn't see anybody push the receiver that's 15 yards and loss of down 15 yards and loss of down now the receiver the rules are very clear the receiver knowing this a pass is his responsibility to guards the defensive player he cannot push off or interfere with a defensive man since he is on the offense and knows that it's a pass been called in the hook 15 yards and loss of them have you ever seen more jubilant concurrence however than you saw there amongst those may wear orange offense with a glossa down third down third down plus the fact that's the 11th flag against Miami for a hundred yard well that's way above the average to the season foul devout oh it's far above their computers Tennessee dropping the way back layin centerfield as Testaverde rolls it out and gets sex one more time Fred Bennett on a frigid Alabama read Bennett was the starting nose guard and was injured in this four games but he has the quickness sixth he's only six that probably was a twist there he's going to twist all the way around the left number 95 goes outside and a linka the guard could not block did not have the quickness and he tackles Testaverde for the loss here the sax again - seven for 86 yards in Tennessee and that only one sack against him for eight yard Tennessee defense just slightly okay taildragger fair catch 11 yard line the Tennessee leads a nation in turnover ratio and so they don't have much to hope for Powell is the tailback Howard is the fullback Paulo has a 60 yard touchdown run and here he goes into the little up to about the 16 Powell is such a great story we talked about Keith when I saw the fried ups come in and he was a starting tailback I went out got the Prescott he's not even listed yet he'll let him I did exactly the same day kid find anywhere I pick up the phone call trying to see it - who is the starter tailback we did two games he whining on the varsity squad why name on the varsity squad there's what he's done 11 runs for 103 yards including a 60-yard touchdown days we've played three quarters for Tennessee as we go to the final quarter second down and six the ball out near their 16 yard line they lead 28 to 7 15 minutes to eight-point favorites coming into the ballgame ended off the Charles Rocha illness loses the handle after 20 and he'll be a couple of yards short of the first down this game is turned so dramatically different Miami does lead in the first downs but they only have 10 yards rushing lately I guess because it had 86 yards in sacks rushing yards to Tennessee 151 Keith and we talked and Johnny Mae just said if he could rush for 150 yards he thought he had a great chance to win the game and it looks like he's a good crop profit third and in two and a half [Applause] Dickie little pop down the middle right open and it's a first down for the volunteers at midfield and McGee who else that it could be clicked scaled but in this instance it is the senior McGee McGee sets up the defensive back was so beautiful he came in regards to how much speed you have watched McGee give a little fake outside now he comes inside runs right by plain what I say when he's even he's leaving and that's the exactly the way it was the race is on finally Blaine brings him dead seven catches for Tim 91 yard and the ball is at midfield first down to the volunteers nikki has 947 yards coming into this ball game all-america up the middle oohs William Howard all the what 441 or to 280 yards on the carry you know the one thing you see the happiness on or inside bloom on the Miami side but the thing where this thing is turned frankly the Miami defensive front pours not love it not at all since the first series deep and Jerome Brown who just demolished Oklahoma thief number 98 when I was the big man again and he's got a first down after Miami 35 and now it is Tennessee that's becoming the intimidate or hairy Galbreath number 76 is the man that is blocking the left guard number 76 the strongest player on the plant our student on Tennessee football team blockin the strongest man and he turns him to the inside and the big fullback runs right over herring oven number 76 starting left guard just a great block double wide bottom of the picture the Tennessee Nikki back to throat load it up and lets it go and it's incomplete and there's a penalty flag keep even though we're seeing a lot of holding I'm glad we have in college I think then officials a big negligent and not calling the holding and letting passing teams get away with murder I think most of the coaches believe that particular the running coaches Dennis Lee you gonna get pushed back that's their ninth penalty for 94 yard no Darryl Dickie showed great pocket discipline he stayed right in there the receiver was due to holding offense first down how long has it been since you've seen two teams penalized 200 yards it's been a long long time Keith they got 194 now unless it was in the low hopper we already pointed then I get that they're close [Applause] the Miami defense has not stopped and not rush Dickey since the first point [Applause] run it but not much Charles Willson house is only a sophomore he's out of Prichard Alabama 205 pounder it is relatively young team if they have 13 seniors on the entire squad that only six or seven starters but Harry Galbreath that guard that we talked about Ethan just a sophomore though to say that he's the strongest player on their team and he's blocking obviously the biggest strongest player on the Miami team defense second down and 24 Tennessee with Keith Davis who's come back into the ball game now laid up and hurt there he is comes out however into slot position as a receiver and he turned around he had a ball but Tim McGee the short man in there but I think Davis Savita turned around probably had a pretty good shot at getting Nikki overthrew we can't just jump it here's Tim Brant all right he that was McGee he just threw - but you mentioned Davis he has been out a long time I talked to him a few minutes ago he has a badly bruised hip but he says he can play he's back in the ball game he's gonna play this fourth quarter but he says it is bothered I mean he is in some pain he Davis has been hurt the last month of the season in and out of the latter all right the Deacons back up into a blanket Nikki lets it fly four quick scales and it is intercepted [Applause] they gave him a touchback coal he no they don't the ball was cold on the 3-yard here he caught it on the tree the rule it's not a safety the rule is if you get possession of the ball on an interception close to the goal line where you first take possession is where they spot the ball not the fact that you take them all in the end zone you can see the analyst goes right up he's carried to the one-yard line going good intercepted by the time to eat somebody worked a long time I'll tell you one thing [Music] Miami hotel out of the end zone Testaverde let's hit a riff and he's got urban wide-open coverage broken by Tennessee somebody the despit Mike's got a first down up around the 47 yard line Ethan I don't know I was looking at that side and didn't see the defender some reason nobody covered that might have been Andre creamer they just busted the coverage as you said you can see how wide open he is no one over there that's the only time we've seen a receiver wide open tonight for Miami there's 12 minutes to play you can school a lot of points in 12 minutes there's a little lob goes right through his hands trying to look back over his shoulder Chris White was in the neighborhood white being the other walter mitty story for tennessee this year having her gotten the chance to play because of injury to charles davis came up with three interceptions against UCLA and he's finished with nine and made all countries near the miami possessions just how good has the Tennessee defense been there's a good example of it after the first one with a touchdown you can see that been very few plays Tennessee defense has not quit them and they've confused Miami is frustrated second down and 10 got a wide open foot touchdown or not with that kind of pressure and it was Brian blades who came across and spoiled Mike Urban's opportunity to pull it in I don't urban had a chance to haul that one down and blades came across and knocked it out of his hands the tight end Smith was the one is wide open teeth intestine heard he never did see him watch Smith somehow they busted the defense again watch and give me the ball my hands up give me the ball please please save me mr. contesta birdie please save me still don't call it kick the ground nobody told me we should wear I was negligent a moment ago in that intersection of deke Franco by Don Ellis first one second 122 straight glasses I'm doing right the Georgia Tech game third down and ten on today's that's Bratton tackle in that midfield and well short of the first down Tennessee probably going to look for Miami to go for it but I don't think they are I think Jimmy Johnson's gonna go ahead and cut the ball but let's see it would be fourth down in six or seven seven he's going to go ahead and cut the ball or at least their lineup in punt formation unless he has another trick play Brett and took off with it less time on fourth down and about four and a half round about 25-yard down by three touchdowns you'd think that he would probably go for it particularly with a national championship at stake going to put the ball hope the Tennessee will start turning it over that's his only two oh he's not Breton got it on the short snap and takes off and gets the first down after 40 you called it you anticipated teeth good cold climate defense excuse me to be Tennessee defense lined up inside looked at the right of your screen only one man to the outside and you can see that they all get blocked right there rap has excellent speed even though he weighs 220 pounds this is Davis number 22 could have pulled him down just short of the first down but he couldn't make the play he haven't made many mistakes today though don't yet have first down for short 140 on the Tennessee side of the field [Applause] directly guts out around makes the loss slow and it's substantial two flags downfield to deep pass interference one side of the other but I didn't see the play because I was watching Testaverde but they're two clangs robbery way down three okay that's a quorum all in agreement anyway [Music] 12 men on the field key 15 yards and a first down no wonder they played so well ha ha ha ha ha but one man is supposed to back judge is supposed to count up and he did they just had 12 in and when you're playing crazy defenses what happens is Tim Donahue calls the line front and then Ron Zook has to substitute the back splits of Nickelback or a dime back and they just got confused there it's a complicated thing and surprisingly doesn't happen more often in a game like this participating on the play by the defense first down where we saw one game this year where they had 13 playing to penalize them for 12 too many men the next play that it allows to begin keeping remember that Alabama next report twice in the role they played too many people Tennessee now is charged with a timeout and they were still confused and you have 21 penalties called in the game for a minus 209 yard jimp ramp back on the Tennessee sideline and the Tennessee coaches are really upset down here at Frank Rose hit it right on the nose the first time there were 12 men on the field that was the flag then Tennessee had to call a timeout which really got the Tennessee coaches upset because they only had nine men on the field so they're screaming at their players to pay attention listen what's called get in or out but pay attention and do what you're supposed to do so you're right Frank they're a little bit screwed up right now they better get their act together because Miami is sitting down on the 25-yard line Testaverde back 10 minutes and 45 seconds to play that shuts in the end zone there's a penalty flag against Tennessee carrots boy Andre Brown and it's going to be 15 yards of 50 and a first down for Miami the defensive back bumped into the receiver the pass was not going to be caught in any event it was overthrown Brown number 83 going inside routes Davis rhinos middle George Davis number 22 right there hesitated instead of going with him he bumps him right there the ball was high but it is 15-yard penalty will be and the distance to the goal 12 yard filled it 12 in hand yard be exact there the penalties that we've had so far in this game get into your book Bernsen and find out the record for penalties I think we've passed at least an hour ago well the referee the marked off he just made a mistake he marked all 15 yards instead pass interference half defense half to death down to the goal for doesn't Tennessee say something well they just didn't realize it the ball was on the 25 you penalize and half the distance to the goal too late now ball snap Testaverde shoots it into the intelligence that they intercepted by Darren Miller the man with the bruised right hand to take a little off the ball and touch it into a receiver and lo and behold little Darren stepped up and picked his pocket we just stood right to him then the key Milas just drop him back like a linebacker should right back into the area where he can play the quarterback he watches it number 45 he tries to lay it over his head jumps up catch the antenna see has the ball stopped the drive well the volunteer line back in pork comes up with a big play there's Miller number 45 that sort interrupts and he doesn't feel a thing right there except joy and Tennessee has the ball just beyond their six and he tests the birdie on the phone upstairs everybody you talk to upstairs right now because time's running out Dicky hands the ball off to Charles Wilson and Wilson can't get much out of it if anyway once again two tight ends before blocking fun to make a first bound running the boat second down and ten Tennessee's left tackle blue just a little bit Bruce Flemming saw him go and jump right in there this is already a new Sugar Bowl record for penalty yards and it's funny how some times keys you can play a game I play Brett leave a team gets a penalty in the next week you you have a lot of penalties there's something that coaches have never learned the solution to it's just the facet of the game of football in some way false start offense second down push this crowd noise and in this indoor arena has some effect on those motion films in Tennessee's not gone ahead of Miami and yardage the Aquila they got 124 now that was a new Sugar Bowl record for one team the old record was 120 Miami has 100 so they have 224 combined second down and about 15 and carrying the ball is Jim Miller that's the first time I believe I've called his name except for a block he threw early on in the ballgame and he gets up to about the line of scrimmage Keith the releases he's carried the ball 5 pounds he's just starting fullback he's scared at all 5 times he get him back he's a blocking back piles they bill to 220 pounds only six foot call carry the ball five pass to 25 yards coming into this ball B I didn't miss the game he caused an injury primarily a block so shocked himself I'm thankful he called his play within the shocking [Applause] all on the six they're down [Applause] Nikki hands it inside to William Howard this time and he's up to about the 11 picking up five and now it'll be Bob Garmin the punt the biggest surprise of the game what she bar dimension they mine is only sack Daryl Dickie one time during the entire game one sack in the entire ballgame Thurman fourth punt now 41 42 52 Miami needs to block with you one seems to kick better under pressure last time they were all over I mean email [Applause] they've got tune in back it's fun they're going after it but he gets it out and they've got a bad kick but it's Perryman fielding on the run and putting it to the sidelines and out of bounds at about the 44 38 yard punt what do you got Tim Keith there has been a tradition established at Miami first Jim Kelly that his clothes are now Testaverde I'm with Jim Kelly and I've got to ask you right off the bat I mean what does Testaverde do to avoid any of this stuff tell you what I saw I don't know the offense last seems like you can't pick up the stunts that they're giving them tell you what he's having a tough game and Tennessee seemed like he came in prepared how about you and the USFL are you going from Houston to New Jersey it seems that way I guess everything's going to depend on what happens with the lawsuit against NFL I love to play an attorney if mr. Trump goes out though what about the NFL would you go right now what's the situation I don't know Buffalo's my rice former year off stuff to wait see what happens hi Jim Keith why there's a good about as good as I ever saw drinka going back to the quarter the Oliver throws back to Testaverde and now Testaverde go out of bounds and pick up on the play what at 7:07 yard yeah no trick play Miami trying to pull out all the stops to talk something that will get him some points on the scoreboard they've tried virtually everything else hits them all back [Applause] Oliver runs over rolls back to big old Paul testa Byrne AV he could have thrown if Testaverde stayed behind the line of scrimmage have been able to throw it back across the field and Jordan then throw again he had the for lateral first only one fall Oh Jim Chanos like the quarterback is at the mercy of his blockers left it to urban eater his sickbed by Chris Wright his bench down there it's a footrace to the car he has [Applause] just inside the five there's an old Chinese proverb that says persistence will be rewarded crisp white is a clear illustration a fifth year senior never started a football game got into the lineup because of an injury proceeds to become a start-up makes one all-american team consensus call Southeastern Conference intercepts nine passes that lead the nation and had never started a game was a special team player until he got a chance because of Charles Davison and Tennessee right here is trying for the door slammer first and goal just inside the five Henderson and big ol Sam the 250 pounder from the South Bend will get a couple of yards maybe on that carry in that play that was the fourth turnover by the Miami football team and Jimmy had already said if he turns the ball over he expected to lose this game of come close to losing it Tennessee is an opportunistic team's 21 plus turnovers for the season there's Chris white what a story that is marvelous to Anderson again [Applause] I'll tell you one thing about this Miami club but it's a very young football team when the one seniors party they want all over big games the last two years on the road they get whipped around here pretty good today deep bowl games you know we talked about how difficult it is to get you bowl team ready to play after the season you have 30 days you really don't know well working hard not working hard and coaches have tried every method none have worked perfectly there's just something about the 30-day rest you know what's gonna help friend of mine used to say a bowl game is like two extra weeks of spring training it Brian helps you pay man this is Russian [Applause] [Music] [Applause] when everybody lines up inside you take the ball outside all the holy ground and you get lead block was innocent number 43 making the key block right there the quarterback did not come up and support as he should have and it opened up a priest scene pilfer goes right in for the touchdown [Applause] 181 yards and four touchdowns on the town the volunteers the kicked by raava's is good for the point and with exactly six minutes to the play in the game it's thirty five seven Tennessee the Tennessee Volunteers have rattled off 35 straight points after my name is fort first - go ahead seven to nothing and if this keeps up I'm gonna know the words to Rocky Top you know we talked about lone Menem since the opening series Tennessee's had the momentum and there are three things in half the remote momentum enthusiasm picks up intensity increase and good things happen to you that's all the case of Tennessee since that first possession jcpenney from the four look at this across the 40 and after the 44 that's a 40 yard return brought down by Charles Davis and it went out that 10 he did naked on that play deep he was supposed to come to the left and he saw a little Running Room to the right he just took off with we've got a new quarterback in the ball game Torretta Jeff faretta comes in Jeff is 11 out of a californian yeah didn't play much he's a junior college transfer fee and to be a player here and the passing off it 11 out of 16 for the season handoff goes to Terrell Oliver working with a sore back does some nifty running and is close to a first down with five minutes and 43 seconds to play in the game of the legged Vinny Testaverde yep don't despair now don't despair it's just toughening in I expect seasoning I believe your grandfather might have called it that goes torretta this is a good quarterback they stuff back here a month ago Richard Cooper the aggressor the fans are yelling kukuku they've got a name for him when he blocks one of those passes gets a little penetration and he's very smart in this tactic a technique stay right there don't rush out of the play but just keep in front of the quarterback and he'd read the jump when he throws the ball I think he had an interception in - I he's good athlete Keith when we did the Auburn game and the UCLA game did you ever suspect the Tennessee defense would be so impressive no shame Johanssen they were know weren't even suspect you know word even suspect this is Oliver tumbling but getting it back he got a good bounce he's got a first down at about the Tennessee 43 I think we need to talk about Ken Donahue a young coach who had great success with their bride and then the Alabama coaches tried to put him out the retirement said you coach long enough and we likely to have a desk job he said not me I'm going to somewhere else Johnny majors hired him and he's had a sensational season Carretas got it in the air ball Sports loose in the end zone I believe in saying no he did not have possession Perry McDaniel was the man depending on the play and he's pretty good at that full speed defense is me he's a track man to McDaniels track has decreased earlier to ballgame first quarter Miami out 7 nothing the big play was Bratton running out of putt formation 2nd quarter Tennessee tied at 77 McGee a 22 yard catch and then Tennessee out in front as McGee recovered cows fumble Tennessee made it 21-7 as Miller of Miami fumbled and the Vols came up with it stuck at the end zone and since then it talking to the restroom at the moment back close to ready to throw the ball and it is caught by Karim it on the sidelines and he's going to be short of his first time but it is a catch as Vic peppers belted him Tennessee native 28 to 7 as Powell at 60 yards and then 35 7 is white intercepted 168 yards and they put at the end zone to make it what it is right now 455 to play 35 to 7 Lauretta again throwing third down and three and a half to the sidelines punctures in front of paraben pissy continues just to fake the Blitz and then drop out and defend giving the Miami quarterback and receivers a lot of problems as to where the open receiver could possibly be there's the time left for 47 Keith what a surprise turnaround wouldn't have been surprised frankly Frank if it had been the other way no I thought if there was gonna be a blowout it'd be mine well after that first touch pad I left the two instead it's gonna be a blowout I'm pulling back to write a quick pop urban catches first down Miami but you know what it sort of looks like in I'm going to use the Gulf in the analogy there are some days when you go out and you just can't do anything with the blame Gulf flow right that's foreign I sort of had them Miami just looked like that from about the middle of the first quarter on it they were just a little bit out of sync keep the opinion on that see what happen incomplete pass the Miami coaches have been working all month on their pass protection blocking schemes because with all the things in Tennessee tip you and I both know that a connected player one that's thinking is not very aggressive not very aggressive in Miami has lacked the aggressiveness that they had in the other games I think one of the primary reasons is that Tennessee had a confused had them thinking and a thinking player hurts the team he slows down and lies in his paralyzed the second third and 10 Torretta throws it up grabs it has it promptly intercepted by Charles Davis and Charles does a hook slide at the 31 and gets a penalty flag in his hip fire could they call the flat yeah there's a flag there is eclectic maybe a face man I don't know [Applause] he wanted to get on the ground and get more possibly fumble the ball that's the sixth turnover by Miami first down for Tennessee outside the 45 and the volunteers now with Jeff Francis and a quarterback going to play on the ground until this game wins on down William Howard's in there now big back along with Jeff powers if Francis is a six foot three 200-pound freshman out of Mount Prospect Illinois and may very well be the quarterback of the future for Tennessee Johnny mate just thinks that he's going to be he has great promise prospects for the future Hall good arm getting good experience here boy good morale builder boy young quarterback Dickey graduating Tony Robinson graduate inside goes William Howard again with the ball and he'll be short of his first down in the Orange Bowl with Oklahoma leading Penn State 19 to 10 Tim Lasher has picked four field goals for the view Orange Bowl record and if Penn State loses with Miami having already lost a game of course but if Penn State loses the only undefeated team I guess in Division one day is going to be Fresno State Jim Sweeney's team you know what somebody asked me last night Fresno State move up in the ratings well I think they would and you had a good comment tell fans what you said about hoping they could move up well I just don't know if the voters nor they need the play some teams in the east part east and Sweeney is one of my best friends and one of his coaches that the game has in college on third down and four Francis hands the ball this time to Charles Wilson and I think Wilson's market at least close he's close he's now wrote down on the paper could Darryl Dickie upstage Bennett Testaverde I think he did really we had a better cast Testaverde team was confused tentative didn't have the aggressiveness of this Tennessee football team the Darryl Dickie coming off the pitch the middle delivered a sensational game [Applause] ten players they got his first down it gave him a hit - and they got ten players picked up six yard well here close the levels within the ballgame Jim Miller just carried it well Miami's wounds are aching now they're tired their feelings are hurt they're frustrated I am embarrassed but this is the one thing about sport when you take a whippin take a whippin but oftentimes you'll find that the other guys on what Tucker the second time around here's the story of the two quarterbacks Testaverde with 2:17 Nick but in this particular instance numbers don't give you the full story the first two drives of tennessee with deke can't blame the quarterback position and the amazing thing is tennessee has finished what they started doing every time they went down to you got a touchdown and that's support about you give credit to the quarterback the passing record is not where you completely outshine the opponent it's getting the ball in the endzone is what the criteria that's the performance of loan criterias performance of the team getting in the end zone it's third down and three right here on this map Tennessee stays on the plan once again I think they're gonna have the first down as we are up to a minute and ten seconds now to go in the game I don't think is in a question in the least in my mind that Daryl Vick is gonna be named VP of this 52nd Sugar Bowl gate a crowd of 77433 came to watch it about 40,000 Dublin at least for Tennesseans Miami sold 12 5 most of them came heap is one of the most surprising bowl games Miami has such great talent but they just didn't execute for the well you had several surprises you had Georgia Tech playing without it starting halfback as Ronnie Hawkins just went in there and banged out seven yards to Tennessee Georgia Tech beat Michigan State 1714 without army on that car via beat Illinois airforce beat Texas Colorado almost got Washington so former was Alabama wet the daylights out of USC so form get kicked around some this year and in the postseason tight and savory here I can chart it examine it this is Hawkins again Kerry and he picks up a first down this time for Tennessee and that'll do it the 52nd circum old classic is history the volunteers of Tennessee upset the Hurricanes of Miami they Thresh them by a final score of 35 to 7 under the goal and volumes of Louisiana arrow Dickey the Tennessee quarterback is the Sugar Bowl MVP for the 52nd annual blessing Darrell Dickey once again your final score Tennessee 35 Miami 7
