James to Miami the Indianapolis Colts went back to the drawing board to find a way to overcome the dolphin hacks the last Sunday at the Hoosier dome the Colts came up with big plays that succeeded more through individual determination than innovation and design [Music] number 88 Robbie Martens 70 yard punt return caught the Dolphins special teams napping yet win quarterback Mike bagel connected with Wayne capers number 87 it seemed that the Miami defense had been lulled to sleep [Music] with two quick strikes the Colts amassed 150 yards and thoroughly outplayed the Dolphins but few teams can outdo old Dan Marino once he gears up his picture-perfect passing attack [Music] this season Marino is only the 11th ranked quarterback in the league but he showed glimpses of his 1984 brilliance with his 17th 300-yard passing performance and a touchdown to Ron Davenport as Miami dominated the Colts 34 to 20 newcomer rod doll how're still has a few things to learn before he can outwit the old maestro Don Shula while in Seattle old Pro Chuck Knox was upstaged by upstart Raymond berry and his streaking New England Patriots New England opened the scoring on a reverse by number 80 earthing Pryor who served as a model for Seattle quarterback Dave Craig's own touchdown run try cram but couldn't pass into the end zone the snapping his streak of 28 straight games with a scoring toss it certainly didn't help that Steve Largent 65 yard touchdown was nullified by a holding penalty but one player who had no problem legally holding on to the ball was Craig James number 32 whose touchdown tied the game in the final period the Patriots have led a charmed existence this season while dave Craig showed once again that his Seahawks are Snakepit safety Fred Marion number 31 grabbed Craig's tipped pass and rambled 83 yards to set up the decisive score Irving prior end of the game as he began it with a trip to the Enzo the Patriots prevailed 22:13 to set up this week's winner take-all match for supremacy in the AFC East against the New York Jets [Music] no one has been able to beat the Bears in 1985 and while the Cowboys were the last team to topple them in the preseason this time around Chicago inflicted the damage with smashing success Dallas turned the ball over five times which led to four bears scores including Mike Richardson's 36 yard interception return with quarterback Jim McMahon out with injuries Chicago relied on their ground attack to supply the offensive firepower [Music] Calvin Thomas had to run over his own man to get into the end zone but when he bowled over this Dallas defender he allowed number 29 Dennis Gentry and equal opportunity to score scoring is something Dallas only dreamed about at number 95 Richard dent led the Chicago charge which limited the Cowboys to 171 yards and never allowed them within the Bears 38 yard line here with his offensive lineman manhandled by Chicago Danny white is at the mercy of safety Dave Duerson for one of six bear sacks the refrigerator maybe the Bears big story but he's not the only modern appliance in Chicago's Hell's Kitchen defense which diced spliced and chopped up the Cowboys offense [Music] Chicago waited 14 years for a victory against Dallas and more than made up for lost time by handing the Cowboys their worst defeat in team history 44 to nothing Chicago has now clinched their second straight and has C central title while they have the other 27 teams singing the blues their objective becomes more attainable with each winning win this began the season dreaming of a winning record and maybe even a division crowd but last Sunday they awaken to the reality that they are still far from being a playoff contender [Music] the Pittsburgh Steelers had little trouble stopping the AFC's lowest-ranked offense the Oilers were held to just 56 yards passing but not before they tried every possible way of moving the football for [Music] the Oilers futile attempt to modern offense may have been humorous but it must have angered their defense who vented their frustration on Steeler receivers the Oilers assault on the Pittsburgh passing game however was nullified by a Steeler rushing attack the groundout 248 yards [Music] number 30 Frank Pollard in number 34 Walter Abercrombie each ran for over 100 yards as the Steelers down the Oilers 30 to 70 Justin may yet make a run for the playoffs but their fans are certainly not dreaming about it they are instead dishing out some useful advice the Kansas City Chiefs are another young team that had hopes of treading a path to the playoffs but after getting off to a three-in-one start they were for the sixth week in a row stopped dead in their tracks the 49er defense ganged up on the Chiefs limiting them to just a field goal meanwhile Joe Montana has a San Francisco offense looking very much like it did a year ago [Music] Fontana completed 23 of 34 Ford two touchdowns as the 49ers easily defeated the fading Chiefs 31 to 3 in st. Louis Neil Lomax was asking Ron Jaworski whether the Eagles were for real or whether their recent success was a case of playing over their head Jaworski told him the Eagles are indeed a team to be reckoned with and the Philadelphia defense backed up that post by giving Lomax a day long dose of migraine pain [Music] [Music] the Eagles registered seven sacks and what attempts the Cardinal defense have inflicting similar damage were thwarted by crafty play call here an impending blitz by Cardinal safety Leonard Smith number 45 is read by Ron Jaworski whose immediate impulse is to toss the ball and Mike quicks directly quick needed all of his athletic skills to snare this touchdown ironically the lanky wide receiver had to exert very little effort when it came to hauling in running back herman hunters option pass [Music] the Eagles took a 14 to nothing first quarterly but the Cardinals rally behind the strong running of stump Mitchell number 30 [Music] Mitchell ran for 179 yards and two touchdowns it might have been the star of the game and had not been for the Eagles Ernest Jackson number 41 [Music] Jackson's career-high 162 rushing yards included this 51 yard touchdown which lifted Philadelphia to a 24 to 14 victories after rebounding from a one-in-four start to win five out of their last six games the Eagles are right in the NFC playoff hunt and after last Sunday no one is questioning whether they are playing over their heads Tim the writers have been so low they've had to look up to see down but last weekend against the Bengals Los Angeles fixed its eyes straight ahead and took Cincinnati's defense head-on [Music] the playoff minded bengals stood up to the challenge holding the raiders to only two field goals after three quarters [Music] however in the final period quarterback Mark Wilson hit halfback Marcus Allen for the game's only touchdown to give Los Angeles at 13 to 6 win while the high-scoring Raiders don't usually rely so heavily on their defense in Cleveland the Browns defense has become accustomed to shouldering below against Buffalo defensive pressure combined with the impotency of the Bills offense left little doubt as to the outcome of last weekend's game Cleveland intercepted two buffalo passes and gave up just seven points which allowed running back earnest Byner number 44 and the rest of the offense the opportunity to strut their stuff [Music] rookie quarterback Bernie Kosar threw for only 103 yards but his fourth-quarter touchdown pass to Ozzie Newsome clinched the Browns 17 to 7 win [Music] after four consecutive losses Cleveland is once again standing tall only one game behind the division leading Steelers the Minnesota Vikings have stood tall all season long but that's because head coach Bud Grant and assists on good posture during the national anthem grant is also a stickler for mistake true football but against the Lions that was too much to ask for [Music] [Music] [Music] Minnesota turned the ball over on three of its first four possessions and it wasn't until late in the second quarter that the offense finally put a dent in the lion defense [Music] quarterback Tommy Cramer threw two touchdown passes to Anthony Carter number 81 however it wasn't even close to being enough to overcome the 31 to nothing first happily built up by the line in that first half detroit signal caller Eric Hipple connected on three scoring passes to two tight end David Lewis number 87 Lyons went on to win 41 to 21 improving their record is six and five while Detroit has reason to feel good about its playoff chances last weekend Packers fans displayed unnerving confidence and after what the Bears did to the Cowboys in Dallas Green Bay was much better off settling for the New Orleans Saints new aliens started former USFL quarterback Bobby Hebert and a good old boy from cutoff Louisiana didn't find the Packer defense very hospitable green baize sacked a bear is six times and it wasn't until the caging quarterback at a little cagey that the Saints offense put some points on the scoreboard however in only his first start a bear could not match wits with a veteran Lynn Dickie Dickie threw for over 300 yards and two touchdowns including one to center Blakemore number 62 lined up at the tight end position the Saints defense is one of the NFL's weakest and last Sunday they did nothing to try to improve their image green baize 38 to 14 win up its record two five and six and although the Packers can't catch the Bears their playoff hopes are still very much alive two weeks ago a snow ball flung from the stands and distracted San Francisco's field goal unit but this time it was a body flung from the field that enabled Denver to assume a one-game lead in the AFC West in the NFC West the Los Angeles Rams have seen their fat four-game lead shrank faster than the main character in Stephen King's best-selling novel thinner last Sunday LA's suffered a 3214 upset it'd be usually less than capable hands of the Atlanta Falcons who produce five takeaways and limited the Rams to just 177 yards of total offense one long touchdown by number 89 Ron Brown was not enough to counter three short ones by Atlanta's Gerald rape [Music] despite Browns curtain call the curtain fell early on the Rams but have went up 16 minutes late in the Meadowlands where a power failure delayed the start of a meeting between the New York Jets and Tampa Bay Buccaneers once showtime got underway the Jets demonstrated that their timing was a bit off as well the Jets bag of tricks won't make Doug Henning jealous but they quickly overcame a 14 to nothing deficit and eventually piled up a 41
