[Music] green bay wisconsin is an unlikely site for a distorted vision of reality a modern day horror tale in the poe tradition but the outcome of last week's packers atlanta contest was not for the squeamish among hometown fans in the beginning however the victims of this scare story were the falcons they were victimized by three first-half green bay interceptions against the spirited packer defense it appeared that atlanta didn't have a ghost of a chance during the first two quarters the packers were also ignited by over 200 yards passing from lynn dickey his sure touch was matched by the sure touch of gary ellis number 31. after ellis caught the second of dickey's two scoring tosses the packers held a 14 to nothing halftime lead and had good reason to believe they had buried the falcons it was however a premature burial as atlanta was revived by defenders such as jeff murrow number 75. the fourth quarter all phases of atlanta's attack had come to life the special teams unit made its presence felt when reggie smith number 16 returned to punt 53 yards [Music] smith's return set up a score then two and a half minutes later steve barkowski hit alfred jenkins number 84 with a touchdown pass that tied the game at [Music] 17-17 [Music] then the specter of atlanta's defense made the packers the ultimate victims in this tale of terror a 57-yard touchdown by number 58 joelle williams concluded the incredible 31 point fourth quarter outburst in this contest the heart of the falcons refuse to stop beating this kind of heart might take lehman bennett's charges to the super bowl while bart starr must hope his packers won't be haunted by the 31-17 defeat they'll attempt to rebound this week against los angeles [Music] for the rams the young season is quickly growing old the host new orleans saints finally struck a winning note as their normally ineffective defense forced four turnovers the good news on offense was george rogers tenacious blocking by tight end brooks williams number 88 allowed number 38 to score his first nfl touchdown roger's rush for 162 yards nearly doubled the total compiled by the rams and even when he fumbled the saints managed to benefit [Music] rogers and west chandler number 89 combine to transform a miscue into new orleans longest game of the day the saints have rarely known such good fortune and when chandler grabbed a fourth period touchdown pass from sub bobby scott they secured a 23-17 victory in the city where they celebrate on the streets they finally got to celebrate in the end zone and chandler's repertoire of post-touchdown addicts was of mardi gras caliber the saints will get a chance to double their total of 1980 victories this week against the new york giants in washington the giants encountered a team with 23 new players on its roster including 12 who lack nfl experience what the giants usually experience is terror and for three quarters they were terrorized by joe feissman and number 83 ricky thompson [Music] but the giants fought back with hard-hitting defense and produced a 17-7 win when number 75 george martin took a feisman fumble into the end zone while the giants and saints even their records the windless redskins and rams must ponder once promising futures that have suddenly turned uncertain in san diego the favored chargers displayed an air of confidence as they hosted the detroit lions however the lions proved to be anything but underdogs as the two teams exchanged the lead six different times detroit's time of possession was twice that of the chargers but when the big play was needed quarterback dan fouts and receiver charlie joyner provided the excitement bouts through for 316 yards and his touchdown pass to kellen winslow number 80 helped give san diego a 28-23 fourth quarter advantage late in the final period it was the chargers defense that put it to the lions however with only seven seconds remaining in detroit threatening to score the go-ahead touchdown the chargers needed a big play defensive back frank duncan number 47 supplied the final heroics with an interception that secured san diego's second straight win in what early predictions say is a super bowl bound season [Music] the chargers opponents this week will be the kansas city chiefs who after eight losing seasons seemed to have developed the team balance necessary to become winners against tampa bay was the chief special teams who began the assault on the bus the special teams capitalized on tampa bay's mistakes and created scoring opportunities for the offense the outstanding performer was kick returner jt smith number 86 who gained 106 yards in [Music] returns smith the starter in last year's pro bowl set up the first of four nick lowry field goals with this 62-yard run [Applause] [Music] [Applause] young and talented chief defense also caused havoc for the buccaneers holding tampa bay to only 10 points despite the extra effort of quarterback doug williams the defense was particularly effective against the run defensive end mike bell number 99 typified the chief's performance as they limited the bucks to only 12 yards on 23 carries thanks to the kansas city defense nick lowry and ted mcknight number 22 were all the offense the chiefs needed mcknight's touchdown run helped the chiefs to a 19 to 10 win and a 2-0 record marking their best start since their super bowl season of 1969. in san francisco quarterback joe montana and the 49ers hope to even their record at 1-1 against the chicago bears threw four three touchdowns including scores to number 88 freddie solomon and ricky patton number 32 that provided san francisco with a 21-17 third quarter lead a vastly improved 49er defense that ranked near the bottom of the conference last season secured the four-point advantage shutting down the bears in the final period one of the game's biggest plays occurred in the final quarter when the 49er defense forced walter payton to fumble on san francisco's two-yard line [Music] payton gained nearly 100 yards on the day however two costly turnovers left him upstaged by cousin ricky patton whose late-game touchdown his second of the afternoon clinched the 49ers 28-17 win what little recent success the baltimore colts have had revolves around the arm and charm of quarterback burt jones jones had beaten the buffalo bills in his last seven starts in number eight he was not so lucky jones left the game with an elbow injury and could only watch as a rugged build defense prepare to defend their afc eastern title [Music] [Applause] as the dust settled on a non-existent cold offense the bills displayed a passing game as impressive as their defense tight end mark framer number 86 caught one of four joe ferguson touchdown passes on the afternoon last season's rookie of the year joe cribbs number 20 ignored the term sophomore jinx and scored his third touchdown of the young season the bills out gained the colts by over 300 yards outscored them by 35-3 and as number 80 jerry butler demonstrated the bills are clearly strong enough to become the first afc east team in five years to repeat as champion the bills were a surprise team a year ago not so in 81. the saint louis cardinals in a sleeper role looked to surprise dallas and end a six-game losing streak to the texans but for the cowboys it was business as usual behind the block of kurt peterson number 65 tony dorsett took dead aim at his fifth straight 1 000 yard season cowboy quarterback danny white secure in the holster of the shotgun completed 72 percent of his passes to the likes of butch johnson number 86 like door set set up the touchdowns that led to the cowboys second win of the year while the cowboys settled into a winning rhythm cardinal rookie quarterback neil lomax weathered his first nfl start with considerable poise aided by the explosive fiotas brown number 33 the cardinals accumulated more total yards than did the cowboys but did not translate them into more total points [Music] lomax the heir apparent to jim hart completed 14 passes for 295 yards with a 62-yard scoring pass to willard harrell number 39. [Music] for st louis there were flashes of promise but any hopes of victory were darkened by the shadow of doomsday and the cowboys 30 to 17 win kept them even with another nfc east rival the philadelphia eagles the defending nfc champions have a single purpose to return to the super bowl and the eagle defense took several steps in that direction against the new england patriots [Music] defensive teamwork produced five eagle interceptions and limited the patriots to a single field goal in 60 minutes of play gradually becoming more familiar with the shotgun offense eagle quarterback ron jaworski frequently sought out the versatile wilbert montgomery number 31 responded with 194 total yards close to 10 yards every time he touched the football it was not a particularly exciting game but for harold carmichael number 17 it drew out the kind of second effort that makes the difference in a low scoring contest the lone touchdown and the eagles 13-3 win was scored by fullback perry harrington number 35. philadelphia played give and take with the patriots for most of the game then took it all with a battering straight ahead running game the eagles came up black and blue the patriots came up empty on paper the new york jets appear to have enough talent to make the playoffs [Music] in the standings they're now owen ii last week they jumped out to a two-touchdown lead over cincinnati but to borrow an old expression these 81 bengals are a new breed of cat for the second straight week the guys in the easter sunday bonnets fell behind early then rallied to win [Music] the go-ahead score came late in period four on this touchdown by archie griffin and it gave cincinnati a one-point lead less than a minute later a new york fumble ensured the bengals of victory number 72 mike sinclair's 12-yard jaunt increased the bengal lead to eight and though the jets did rally for a last-second touchdown it was academic as cincinnati recorded its second consecutive come from behind win who knows perhaps they'll become the new cardiac kids the old cardiac kids didn't fare quite so well last week as brian sipe and the cleveland browns fell victim to the surprising houston oilers twice number 65 alvin buffet extended an arm to snuff out cleveland field goal attempts both times but they came right up the middle and both times the oilers came away with the football cleveland fans however kept the faith late in the final period with their team trailing by six they called on sight for one of those patented miracle finishes 53 times sight put the ball in the air going for the end zone but on this day there would be no hallelujah chorus for the cardiac kids just couldn't seem to connect houston held the browns to a field goal in a hard-fought 9-3 win despite the loss it's unlikely that brown coach sam retigliano will alter his opinion on passing he once said anything else but passing would be boring but after two straight home field defeats cleveland fans would settle for any kind of dullsville victory another afc central club that's fallen on hard times the pittsburgh steelers a team whose big name stars no longer have the look of a champion [Music] running on the steelers used to be suicidal but on a thursday night in the orange bowl the miami dolphins average five yards a carry [Music] the steeler pass rush remains poor and though the deep back still can deliver a lick they often beat up the wrong people let's face it the steelers have seen better days in their nationally televised contest against miami it was don schuler's dolphins who executed like champions [Music] number 32 reserve running back tommy vigorito's 87-yard punt return best summarized the evening for both clubs in short what happened was an improving young contender from miami hammered an aging old dynasty from pittsburgh into submission final score dolphins 30 steelers 10. but the most heartwarming story of week two took place in the seattle kingdom there after eight consecutive defeats the seattle seahawks have come to view a simple first down as reason for a gala [Applause] [Music] celebration [Music] last sunday against denver the hard luck seahawks scored their only touchdown on a pass to number 68 dennis boyd a reserve offensive tackle who lined up at tight end needless to say it was boyd's first nfl score that plus two efren herrera field goals gave seattle a 13 to 10 lead a lead the sluggish broncos couldn't overcome late in the game with seattle sitting on the football and the clock winding down 58 000 plus seahawks fans rose to their feet and gave their team a thunderous standing ovation or not since december of 79 and the seahawks won a regular season game at home in the kingdom hold those heads high seattle your home field disadvantage is a thing of the past
