1970 Motor State 400 at Michigan

[Music] 40 cars and drivers will compete today at Michigan International Speedway for the first place and falstaff points for the national championship Bobby Isaac Moo's from the sixth position to first with Pearson a close second [Music] after several laps the package strung out and Isaac steadily increases his lead here soon his second feat Hamilton third Buddy Baker forth then plots back in petty as the leaders begin to lap the slower cars Teddy starts moving in traffic and assumed challenging flats back coming down the front shoot petit passes both blocks back and Pearson moving into second place and in pursuit of the leader Bobby Isaac [Music] many of the cars begin to pit including Cale Yarborough's the heart charge you has problems today [Music] down the front shoot steady pours it on and gets by Isaacs if they hit turn one Isaac will have to fight penny now for the win and the Falstaff voice well this goes on kale pulls out of the pits one lap down [Music] then he stretches his lead and is running by himself many others have to pit for tires and fuel it's a race against time even in the pits the two slowest stop could cost a whole lap in this race [Music] ready who has been setting a blistering pace slows down coming into turn four and heads for the pits this gives the lead the glass back feet Hamilton is second then Cale Yarborough a lap down Eddie in the pits its fuel and rubber but his car stall the hood goes up that means trouble [Applause] and his true pushes his car but it won't start teddy is out of the race and we have to earn his Falstaff points at the next race there's trouble in turn four a car hits the wall and bursts into flames it's the leader glutes back in car number 99 and the caution comes out slowing down the field starting the rash of pit stops Neil Yarborough is one of the first to come in most cars get right-side rubber and one can of fuel Cale Yarborough in the first out of the pits followed by peat Hamilton the caution is still out and some cars fit a second time for left-side rubber and to top off the fuel tanks cale yarborough does not fit a second time and makes up his lost lap on the green flag hail is the leader with Pete Hamilton and Hot Pursuit [Music] the way Hamilton is charging he wants first not second he gains a little on cale yarborough through each turn [Music] as they come down the main straightaway on the one hundred and ninety-ninth lap they're side by side they both take the white flag it could be either Pete or Cale to win the Falstaff points are still up for grabs [Music] [Applause] Pete Hamilton gets the lead on the bat shoes but as they come into turn three Yarborough drives deep and gets the edge [Applause] Neil Yarborough gets the checkered flag [Applause] he also gets fourteen thousand five hundred and fifty dollars in prize money and the winning points towards the Falstaff twenty five thousand dollars
