Wow 68 Mustang Fastback but it's all electric thousand horsepower 1800 pound-feet of torque this thing is a screamer I'm Steve Forbes know your host for Austin garages let's go for a ride welcome to another episode of Austin garages I'm your host Steve Forbes but we've got a great treat for you today we're heading up to Lake Way in Northwest Austin to see a car I've heard so much about and I can't wait to see it imagine a 1968 Mustang Fastback that's gone all electric they tell me a thousand horsepower 1800 pound-feet of torque and get this 0 to 60 in 1.7 nine seconds that's right one point seven nine seconds in a full steel all glass street-legal Mustang they don't call it a hot rod they don't call it a rat rat they call it a lightning rod so come on let's go for a ride [Music] when Ford introduced the Mustang in 1964 it was an instant hit in the first 18 months of production Ford made over 1 million Mustangs just to keep up with demand in 2016 Ford sold just under a hundred and six thousand still a lot of Mustangs but nowhere near a million it set the standard for what an American sports car or muscle car should look like perform alike and even cost in 1967 Ford revamped the Mustang and they made it bigger badder and meaner with the addition of a 390 cubic inch big block so they added muscle to the sports car to take one of these iconic American sports cars got it insert a slew of batteries motors and controllers enough to power a small city block is this automotive sacrilege or muscle car evolution let's go find out [Music] they call it bloodshed motors because so many people have lost blood and building this dream we're not just talking finger scrapes it's more like electrical shocks that make you cry and cut so deep you can see bone it's the brainchild of Mitch Medford his vision to take cool cars and turn them into high-performance all-electric muscle cars and here's a very special example to show us today be careful though it may shock you it's called the zombie 222 the 222 stands for two motors two controllers and too damn fast and the zombie is a reference to John Whelan's white zombie a 1972 Datsun 1200 converted to all-electric that put out amazing numbers it was the inspiration for Mitch's dream and the two eventually formed the team that would lead to the creation of a zombie 222 they took a rust-free 68 Mustang remove the internal combustion engine and replaced it with dual electric motors and two controllers to manage the battery packs they also fabricated sturdier motor mounts and installed frame rails for structural support not to mention an elaborate electric system that could power a hospital a quarter mile time of 9.8 nine seconds at 140 point six miles per hour and a standing one mile top speed of 170 7.8 miles per hour you could geek out on this thing all day but it's time to go see it in person hey come on in hi how are you yeah I'm bitch Steve Steve forms my good to meet you finally welcome to the blood sheds thanks for having me here what am I looking at what you're looking at here is a 1964 Lincoln Continental with suicide doors and it's been wrapped in a matte black vinyl it has a beautiful custom red leather interior in it and what we're doing right now is installing a full slam airbag system new suspension and disc brakes on all four corners to make the car you know extremely safe drivable feels good and it can creep along low to the ground I still see an engine a gasoline engine it looks like yeah are you going to convert this into electric well you know that's what we do if you're out comes motor tranny exhaust fuel tank in goes electric motors batteries controllers inverters all that good stuff and now we have an all-electric low riding disc brake Lincoln one of they're gonna see the before in the after oh yeah I believe unequivocally this is the pinnacle of restomod when you talk about restomod taking modern brakes or modern this and put it in vintage cars what in the hell is more modern than taking the most powerful electric drive technology and embedding it in the coolest vintage cars ever right here behind us is a 1966 Mustang convertible oh cool now this guy's getting a full rotisserie restoration that's why you see the rotisserie frame here there'll be a third of the battery pack in the front and two-thirds will go in here and we did that for a couple of reasons one is it gives you some weight balance and distribution but it also leaves him at least a somewhat usable trunk area because the battery pack will probably come up to back here the batteries in this car are gonna probably be about 800 pounds how cool he wants this Mustang to be all-electric he wants to be able to cruise about 125 miles on a charge he's a Tesla owner and he's a little spoiled sure he likes those long range cars new paint interior everything's go look duck it rolled off the floor man there is no engine there is a motor there is no fuel tank there is a battery pack I mean it really is that simple Mitch what am I looking at this is incredible you know some knows when I show this people think they're looking at a jet turbine but what you've got here are two big 11 inch DC motors that are actually coupled together to act as one big drivetrain it's 400 volts but what's more important is it's also 4,000 amps now to put that in perspective that's more than a Peterbilt or a Mack truck so let me show you where all that power comes from all right so this is the heart of the monster so the battery starts right there and comes all the way back into the trunk now the original battery used to just fit in the trunk but that was only 18 kilowatt hours and the way to think of kilowatt hours is kind of like how many gallons of gas does your fuel tank hold we decided we wanted to go after top speed records so we needed more battery so we effectively almost doubled the capacity of the battery because we've got to hold that unbelievable power level down all the way for a solid mile okay the Texas mile when you're doing that for a full mile the amount of energy is just staggering right so that's why the battery goes all the way down now what you're looking at here are all these little computer boards they have these blinking lights that tells you how many cells 60 so it's 60 x 64 these boards then talk to each other and they balance across all of the keep the pack happy in fact that all you see is green means this guy's charged up he's happy and he's good to go now we've been refining the car for probably three years now I bet you there's probably six seven hundred hours in it at least people ask me how much money I've gotten in this car I can't even tell him because you know we had to keep making corrections and figure things out and figure things out but we finally have gotten this car to where it set these records and it literally doesn't break so I hadn't gone on the internet and it researched electric drag racing and every time I would search on that up pop the white zombie and it was a 1972 Datsun 1200 it was all electric now that's a car that when I was young your parents bought you if they didn't love you and then one makes sure no woman ever would it was not a cool car but that little white zombie was insanely fast okay so when I saw that and then I saw my first Tesla I said you know what electric propulsion is it's here it's ready I'd been in high tech for a long time and frankly it was getting a little old you know when you get in your 50s you kind of know how the story ends and so you start to think a little bit more about what have you done and I realized that even though I've had a great life and a lot of excitement I haven't really set everything aside and said I'm going for a dream and that's exactly what I decided to do one of the guys on Team Joe said hey why don't we take the gas filler cap oh yeah yes you did he actually did the work himself and I didn't even know he was doing it one day would come in he goes here you go oh how cool instead of gas you get electrons right it's fully charged yeah so full charge means we could take it perhaps for a spin you want to go for a little ride let go for absolutely [Music] [Applause] [Music] Oh oh my Wow oh oh now you smell that that's ozone that's ozone that's arcing on the motors because we have balls of plasma the size of your fist I love the smell of alone in the more owl I can see why you built this this is fun tell you what after having this car and now that I've owned some of the most powerful cars in the world this has pretty much ruined them for me sure this is spectacular there's nothing that I've ridden and that could compare to that I've ridden in some very fast I've driven some very fast cars but I don't think this is the one you take the two wife to dinner with you know I take her to dinner but I would park it myself I tell him yeah I won't let anybody valet park this car if they accidentally just push the pedal just a hair too far it'd be totally out of control yeah this is addictive well it's the future yeah there's no question about when we made the cover of Mustangs monthly I got to see the reaction of a lot of the readers because they published their magazine as an online form to the true Mustang aficionados it was 50/50 50 were like how dare you the other 50 were like high five and at the racetrack I was really surprised at how the old-school drag racers embraced it they would come over and they'd look at it and they go what in the hell is it and I tell them and then they'd say how much torque is it produced now how much horsepower I'd tell them they don't care those are guys that if you told them that running cow manure in their gas tank would give them 10 more horsepower they do it in a heartbeat all right so what we're gonna do is we're going to brace ourselves make sure to engage both motors are hot okay so these guys are out of the way buddy out of the way and let's do it Oh [Music] keep going all day long brother we've been on a quest for 200 miles an hour that's what we've been working toward and I have never gotten a speeding ticket but if you ask me have I been pulled over the answer is quite a few times but almost every time I've been pulled over it's because it was a sheriff or a police officer that had heard about the car saw the name and wanted to stop and have a look at it well look that poor guys getting another ticket I'm just like going now let me show you under the hood oh here's the batteries so the car is actually a pretty it's pretty big local legend around here Mitch thanks so much for having me today it was an absolute pleasure my pleasure welcome back anytime well I appreciate that we will definitely be back and for our viewers at home if you'd like to take a look at what Mitch and his crew have brewing here at their shop you can look online what's the website its bloodshed motors calm your to hear first bloodshed motors calm thanks guys take care [Music] [Applause] [Music] you [Music]

I say it's amazing what electricity can do. Once we get the whole battery weight problem sorted out, an electric future for top-end supercars seems possible

I know one of the guys that helped build this car, I have a standing invitation to go down to the garage and check it out. I really should.

What amazes me is that as fast as this thing is, the Red victor 1, another street legal car, did the 0-60 in less than a second and a 6.2s quarter mile.

That's incredible. Especially that 0-60 with that top speed in an electric car.
