Philadelphia's hallow Franklin Field is a tangle with the Eagles Eddie the Baron destined to become the league's champion faster is set to pilot the Redskins the Eagles lead 7 to nothing in the second quarter as the Baron fades to pass he pinpoints Johnny Carson over the middle for a 16-yard gain to the eagle 44 jappa more sensation jimpat Olli takes a pitch shot around right in for a nine yard it's slow motion but it works too fast to soothe the egos LeBaron retreats from the 28th Eddie lays one on the line to Johnny Carson the ex george a's takes it in stride for a touchdown the redskins not become 7 to 7 the skins move right back to the Eagle 26 Jennifer Dolly's swings wide to the left he speaks to her first down in the 15th with the rough tough legal defense supplying the breaks Sam Baker boots a 33 yard field goal and the Redskins move ahead 10 to 7 he'll get back to lead in the third quarter but the Redskins retaliate LeBaron passes over the middle to dick James for 18 yards as the quarter in it's LeBaron again this time as he hits don bosley the sophomore fullback changes his course and picks up nine dickie James goes wide to the left and dash is untouched into the end zone the Redskins are back on top 17 to 14 Diego failed to move but look at these Redskins go James gets good blocking to pick up the 11 yard kut'rs gideros coots for another first down the Redskins are keeping that football with time running out a driving attack puts the ball in the one Don Bosco Wiggles over for the score the Redskins have the point to give him the sweet 24 to 14 opening day victory over the Philadelphia Eagles back home in Griffith Stadium the Redskins beat the Giants in one of the league's oldest rivalries the New Yorkers are on their way to the National League championship the Giants lead seven to nothing and here they go again Don Hyneman goes back to toss a long one he hits Bob Duggar for a New York touchdown the Giants Mike their lead the 14 to nothing after one quarter he'll general Eddie LeBaron in his the battle to put the tribe back into the game with a 39 yard pass to Jim cannoli in one big play the Redskins have chopped the giant lead to 14 to 7 skins with the ball again LeBaron makes good a running toss to Don Vossler the ex Miami star moves 29 yards before a giant defender throws him out of bounds just one yard short of the New York goal yet Sutton going wide cuts inside right and and cracks over for the second score at halftime the game is tied at 14-14 early in the third quarter LeBaron looks downfield and fires to Tennessee's Bill Anderson bill gallops 58 yards to the giant pen and the Redskins are beating the war drums once again it's fourth down and the skins are still on the outside looking in the vans pass is broken up and the Giants hold on a great goal line stand with just seconds left in the third quarter Charlie Conerly passes for New York Frank Gifford is there to make a sensational lunging catch the 41 yard play moves the ball to the Redskins 17 on the first play of the final period Frank Gifford takes Connolly short pass and he's off like a scared rabbit to carry to the 10 the Redskins put the rush on Connolly but he managed to send up a floater Ken Mack if he takes it the end zone and the Giants take a 21 to 14 lead to end a tough loss for the Redskins the Green Bay Packers annual Piedmont bowl rivals of the Redskins invade Griffith Stadium three newest series which spans 22 years the Packers won the last time they met in league play and the Redskins are eager for revenge early in the opening period of halfback head Sutton carries for a first down in the Packer 45 watch now in slow motion as pullback Johnny Oh chefs key breaks into the Green Bay secondary he's off and running and there's no stopping the Big O in this play it's a 45-yards friend into the end zone for a Redskins score it's Redskins seven Packers nothing Redskins on the go again as Johnny o rolls up more yardage she powers 21 yards through the Packer defense to the Green Bay 43 on fourth down Sam Baker goes back to the 44 yard line of Green Bay to attempt a field goal it's good and the skins enjoy attending lead at the quarter the tribe strikes again in the second quarter Eddie LeBaron the 1958 league's leading passer throws complete to Jim Fedeli on the Green Bay 35 johnnyo is heading himself a picnic he goes for nine yards Laveranues only a little man but he plays big football as he whips a 20-yard pass to Joe Walton Walton grabs the ball for a touchdown the skins had a field goal for a 20 nothing lead at halftime in the third period the Redskins are hunting more scalps little chief LeBaron calls for a pass in the powwow and when the fun's done Walton is on the Packer 48 lebarron sachets around till Bill Anderson steps into the clear then he lets fly a long one Anderson has it touchdown Redskins for a twenty seven nothing lead with the schedule 1834 to nothing the final stanza starts with packer quarterback vapor le passing complete to wingman max McGee the big and travels into the reservation and goes over for a packer touchdown but the tribe is on top 37 to 21 at the final gun next the Redskins sharpened their tomahawks for their first 1950 a clash with the Cleveland Brown this is one of the hottest rivalries in Eastern Conference and the Redskins are primed for this test with the mighty invaders from Ohio no plum gets the Cleveland Machine going he pegs over the middle to Preston carpenter and carpenter gets the ball catters all the way to the redskins six on a 74-yard play look at him go les Walters coming up to finally make the stop Jim Brown blows his way across to put Cleveland in front seven to nothing on an 80-yard Drive from the opening kickoff the Redskins counter with a long-distance strike of their own ralph gliomas lofty lead has dropped precisely into the paws of Jim cannoli and Jim doesn't lose a stride as he completes a 64-yard touchdown play that evens a game at 7-7 the Redskins are on the go in the second period Giuliani takes aim on Johnny Oh chef ski and Johnny beats a path to his own party when the Browns whole Sam Baker gets the call Sam's 35 yard placement puts the skins ahead 10 to 7 no clown gets the brown trolling again he has plenty of time but no underthrown ooh and finally takes off around right in for a 12 yard game Jim Brown bobbles the milk clown pitcher gets in trouble and gives the ball back to Mel who salvages a four yard profit from the deal it's more than poor on the floor and a bad angle for Lou Groza but will come through to tie it up again in satin town at the end of the house after standoff third court in the brown said to break the tie by sending Lou carpenter crashing for 30 long yard watch him go Jim Brown supplies inside powers heat pile drives to a first down in the Redskins 37 Brown gets the call into going to stop the skins are making it as tough as they can but Jim gets to their 30 Lu carpenter finds a nice hole in the left side and smashes to the 16 the Redskins rock-ribbed defense stiffened but Lou Groza belts of all through the gloom for a 26-yard field goal and the Browns leave 13 to 10 in the closing seconds the skins go all out to reverse the decision but Ralph Giuliani's pass is picked off by John Paul and returned to the Redskins hands Bar loses the ball but Michaels recovers for Cleveland Jim Brown barrels for six big yards and the Browns are knocking on the door Brown scores the final touchdown of the game Cleveland has to pull it out of the bag in the final two minutes to down the Redskins 20 to 10 [Music] the Redskins play host to the Chicago Cardinals and they're off and running on the first play from scrimmage Teddy LeBaron hoists a handsome heave to Jim Fedele but all he speaks for pay dirt but he's tripped up in the five and his goal to go Redskins Johnny Oh chef ski the Redskins hard-charging fullback blasts through his former teammates and the Redskins score first to take a seven nothing lead the cars make it a seven three game but the skins are on the warpath again Eddie LeBaron triggers a toss to Jimbo doughy they put him on the Cardinals 21 watch in slow motion as little Eddie LeBaron skips back and picks out Jo Walden this time Jo wraps it up on the Chicago ten lebaron Tallahassee Redbirds with the touchdown toss to Joe Walden the skins have had the ball twice and twice they've scored as a lead monster 14 to 3 the touchdown privates on its way again in the second quarter the Baron passes to Johnny Oh chef ski for a first down in the card 21 Cardinal offensive unit is itching to get into the game but the Baron hasn't finished his aerial jurors yet he takes a perfect pass stupid Olli and Jim has himself a touchdown now it's Redskins 21 cards three the Redskins are finally forced to give up the ball midway in the second period Sam Baker punts it goes to Jimmy Sears Sears fumbles and Jim straighter picks up the ball and bolts into the end zone but the play was dead on the town Teddy the bear knows away from here he rolls out and looks for padule-- Jim gets his hands on the ball and that saw touchdown Redskins it's 28 to 3 on the first play after the kickoff the cards hand the ball to mal hammock and it gets away from him Doyle next makes the recovery and the Redskins are ready to roll baron has the play all picked out for this situation he his arm and takes aim on Joe Walton Walton pulls it in to score the Redskins capitalize in the breaks to make it 35 to 3 in the third quarter LeBaron is up to his old tricks he looks downfield and Eric's presses the pastor Joe Walden it's a 38 yard touchdown the Baron's 5th scoring pass and the Redskins move on to a 45 10 advantages they win a big one 45 to 31 the redskins traveler cleveland for another in their a series of nip and tuck struggles with the brown these games are often decided in the final minutes Don Bosco gets things started with an 18 yard run Eddie LeBaron Hampstead Sutton this time and Sutton slashes to the ground 19 then another 18 yard game the runners are in top form today Don bass their bucks across and the tribe takes a 7-nothing lead over the Eastern Conference champions the skins refused to let the Browns Jim Brown through the line so he bypasses it as he takes a plumb pass and votes for 21 yards to move into the Redskins reservation milk plum comes back and starts to his ride as his receivers run their patterns ray Renfro breaks free in time to pull in the ball for a 29-yard touchdown in the game is tied at 7-7 after two period the Redskins little chief finds the reigns in the third quarter the baron passes to Joe Walden on a beautiful 18 yard play the Browns defense completely fooled by the great faking abetting the Baron goes one way as Sid Watson goes the other all by himself for a touchdown the weather is cold but the Cleveland offense heats up in the fourth quarter milk plum fires his own five and Ray Renfro is behind his man for a 45 yard gain his fumble was after the whistle the Browns UT here to give us to Jim Brown who fakes the plunge and ladders back to plum plum has all the time he needs to hurl a strike to Darryl Brewster down on the three Luke Carpenter spins and drives for those final three yards and Cleveland ties it up again as the score amounts to 14 to 14 the Redskins have their mind set in an upset Eddie the Baron is rushed but his past who had Sutton is on the mark for 26 yards the Baron comes right back with a spot pass over the middle to CID Watson as the Redskins invade Cleveland territory they're within field goal range and Sam Baker tries to get him the lead from the 44 but his chick is not good and the game is still tied at 14-14 with just a couple of minutes remaining the browns drive to avert a tie milk plum pitches to Ray Renfro and Cleveland picks up a good chunk of yardage mom rolls out as if to pass but he hangs on to the ball and races for 22 yards with a little over a minute to play plum pushes across for the winning touchdown Cleveland comes from behind in the final minute to heads the Redskins 21 to 14 the Pittsburgh Steelers hottest team in the last half of 1958 come to Griffith Stadium and are on the move as Bobby Lane gets off along one downfield but defender Burt sagres is there to intercept he scoops all the way back to the Steeler 24 on a 34 yard return early in the second quarter Ralph Giuliani finds open field to the right and Ralph rushes to a 10 yard game Don Bosco knows arrested the touchdown trailers he picks his pop perfectly it's a touchdown and the Redskins draw first blood in the Steelers seven to nothing lane to a spark to Steelers to five straight wins pitches in other paths but once again his toss is picked off by the alert bird Tigers Burt returns the interception 24 yard watched on Buster the ex Miami Hurricane squirrel around end and overpower everyone inside enroute to a 20 yard gain with first-half time drawing short ralph bellamy connects with Joe Walden for a first down in the Steelers three the tribes Big Chief touchdown is Don Buster and over Don goes to vote the home team into a 14 nothing halftime lead each season the Redskins feature a southern college band at halftime in 1958 it's the colorful marching band from Mississippi southern and the college's fancy steppin Dixie darling one of the all-time great halftime shows in the third period the skins are kept inside the Steeltown 15 as Ralph Kagame rolls out he fires goal word but the bullet is stared by Steeler Dean Derby to end a Drive back for another try come to scrappy Pittsburgh Steelers Tom Tracy slashes upfield for 21 yards Chile's forced out of bounds Bobby Lane is confident that his overhead work will pay off soon and right he is Jimmy or latches on and foxes Steelers seven points closer it's now Redskins 1407 Steelers with the ball watch run in gym or on a slick end around the Nets 80 important yards to the Redskins 29 Bobby Lane shows why he's a great clutch passer as he fights off one then he he's go word it's a perfect strike and a great catch by Jack McClaren as the Steelers pull even for a 1414 time at the season finale against the Eagles Redskins fans honor their all-time defensive Graig gene Brito vice-president Nixon makes the presentation I think but they but the thing that we particularly want to say is this that we prevent this car to you your fan not because of your great playing only and because of this wonderful record but because you with all of these other old-timers here symbolize the spirit of the Red Scare a fighting spirit which means that win or lose the Redskins are a great pain to walk and because you have symbolized that spirit I present these keys to you today good luck Norvin Rockland gets the visitors going with the pitch to Bill Barnes and the former Wake Forest star runs for a 30 yard gain but that's as far out of their nest as the Eagles can get Van Brocklin is punting later in the period when Johnny Miller gets a hand on the ball to block the kick bill poacher recovers to put the Redskins on the Eagle 22 the Redskins can't get the running game going on the icy field but Sam Baker gets him three points and the tribe lead the Eagles fight back through the air as norm Van Brocklin passes Nick Lynch intercepts for the skins and the rookie from Notre Dame makes the sparkling return as the first quarter in well cool me another Notre Dame representative has the Redskins marching in the second period he passes to Joe Walden for a first down the skins can't get much closer but Sam Baker has the range from here his 18 yard placement gives the Redskins a six nothing lead the Philadelphians finally find their footing as they send clans peak smashing into territory but they lose the ball as peak bumbles and gene Tchaikovsky recovers the Redskins are noted for the rushing game and Don Baylor shows why with a 12 yard blast to his own 46 runners bring the ball into eagle territory and from there good yummy goes overhead with the pig to Joe well done on the eagle 7x Tar Heel terrier Edie Sutton drives across the goal line with the first touchdown of the game at halftime it's 13 Redskins nothing eagle in the fourth quarter Jerguson is back in the firing line for the Eagles he passes to Rhett slab for a tiny 19 yard gain Philadelphia's fighting to avoid a shutout Jerguson connects with Billy Barnes for his third straight completion but the big birds bogged down at midfield on fourth down with three to go norm ban Brockman returns to the game to punch Johnny Oh chefs B signals for a fair catch on the 30 Eddie the Baron is back at quarterback for the skins just when it looks as if the Eagles have been smothered Eddie uncorks the long pass to Bill Anderson bill takes the ball and Sprint's over the frozen turf for a 71 yard touchdown score to make the season finale at 20 nothing shutout victory over
