[Applause] hi i'm lou with another episode of my car story and today we're out in scottsdale arizona and i'm with ed winkler friend to the channel and he has well just an amazing cadillac for you ed what did you bring today this is a 1947 cadillac it's a model 62 two-door coupe some people refer to them as said and nets like a sedan and net yes sedan that's correct let me show you the car so this one well i put it just like that as you can see on purpose because the back end of this car is striking so here we have our trunk and treats and besides this wonderful piece of jewelry here we have this that's how this piece opens up there's a little like so and here's our trunk on this car now first of all not tons of room for a back end at this big and that's because this tire takes that up so what we're starting with is the cadillac shop manual supplement 46. now that's interesting because in 46 there weren't any cars they did make cars in 46 but not many but not many and in 47 they use basically the same manual so it is the same car so tell me about these pictures and this young lady right here those pictures of the are the car in 1947 from the original owner in iona new york and this woman gave you these pictures that's right wow and so this tell me about this this is the build sheet so to speak from cadillac heritage and they used to provide for you all the information on your car so you give them the vin number actually they didn't have vin numbers back then the engine number the body number and they research the car and they'll go back and they pull the actual build sheet on the car and as you see she had to write some of the information in because it was it was not legible right and there's what it was back in that time frame the fog lights were 16 the radio 845. wow really great good stuff let's uh can we pick up this uh piece here just show um let me take this off for a second it will show kind of the spare tire under there sure so there's this piece is that uh it's it's on a piece of plywood but that all looks like it came from the factory that way it did and then it bolts in here it just fits yeah there's no well it fits right onto the flat floor and it's it's held down by the c-clamp just like that and this piece is just a wooden piece of ply that sits above the tire so you can stack luggage that is supposed to lock down inside here got it and you've got the the firestone made in usa they were the gum dipped yeah these are these are uh pre-dot tires these are really old tires really old tires not on the car now but that's what came with the car this one came with the car yeah so i'm told okay very good well let's take a look at the rest of the car so we set it in the mountain-like environment so you can just enjoy that ed tell me a little bit about the back of this car how it all comes together tell me some of the history well general motors under harley earl wanted to make a fastback automobile and they made them for every division but this is the this is the big one you could buy a cadillac coupe in a model 60 or a 62. the difference is the chassis and this is the long wheelbase chassis and as as a two-door coupe it makes it very dramatic when you build a fastback with that size of the chassis now as you as you probably know gm went to the fins in the late 40s and this is the beginning of the fin they always attribute the fin to the 1948 car which has a little hump which they refer to as a fin but you would see they're getting the idea here early in the very mid 40s of building a thin type or an aircraft type feature and putting that onto an automobile yeah come on back with me let's show the side of this car and we thought we'd give you not only the side of the car but some beautiful environment to see it in that's just striking right there interesting how the front fender comes all the way through the door and again i know you shared that the 42 this is like an extension of that the fenders are referred to as pontoon fenders you can see why if i open the door you can see the remains of what used to be called running boards because this has a running board but you don't see it until you open the door if you come around here you will see a very short running board so this shows you the transition in automotive design and engineering from a running board car to a pontoon fendered car that did not have running boards and then from there the fenders became more incorporated with the hoods we have the light here we have this for those of you who are trained enthusiasts the f unit diesel split window there and the front of this one now what we're going to do for just a moment is we're going to turn it around so that the sun is facing under the hood when we prop that open okay i shared with you we'd have the front and here it is and this one as i just stepped back just a bit and i'll give you that view from the front really has a great presence i'll just let you take down with the mountains that's pretty cool so as we come up to the front big fog lights almost as big as the headlights and this beautiful cadillac v and take a look at this goddess featured there even the bumperettes have this little fin to them just such great design and styling okay let's let's pop open the hood now this is interesting how this hood opens watch this you kind of grab her by the face and it pulls up like that you can't be shy you can't be shy yeah so this is a flathead v8 engine which cadillac made for oh probably 30 years the size of this engine is a 246 cubic inch engine runs about 150 horsepower you might see these black pieces which is the ceramic coating around the exhaust manifold the exhaust is coming out on top of the engine into these these uh ceramic manifolds and then down and out this was in its day asbestos but this is not obviously asbestos today but a a secondary covering over the pipe in order to keep the heat down what is this right here that is the senior winner the senior winner in the classic car club and that's uh so it's considered a senior car with the classic car club very cool even the little lines in the windshield wipers just didn't have to do that it could have been flat no we're going to do it right and even if you look at the back of the mirror there's just a little design detail there so one of the things i'm saying is this the gas line i'm assuming no the gas line is this the gas line okay that's right this is the gas line no this is the the one that you're pointing at is works for the automatic choke okay so it's a line that runs off of the exhaust manifold to heat up heat up the carburetor i was gonna say how did they run the gas light through the exhaust you can see the fuel pump over here actually we were wrong here's okay here's here's the gas coming up here okay and this is this is interesting because it's not only a fuel pump but it also creates a vacuum a vacuum pump to run the windshield wipers and to run the antenna so two pumps in one one of the things that i know about these years is there's your tag right there inside i'll try to zone in on that and if i'll pull back you can see it's basically in the corner did those use they used the engine number as i as the identification number for the car that's pretty cool pretty cool well let's uh fire it up listen to its start we'll beep the horn look at even though the hood props it didn't take much to fire and man is that smooth and while i'm behind it let's step on the brakes for one moment please okay you can see the taillight there and here's the single exhaust here focus down you can see the taillight there hey give it a little gas please nice let's uh let's take a look at the interior shall we so as we take a look at our interior we have a little keyhole there this piece of jewelry comes like so and we specifically put this this way because it's in the sun if you take a look at that instrumentation i thought you'd enjoy that here's the word we're sharing we've got a little running board you're quickly greeted by the cadillac does that lever move it up or does that move the seat back or what is that liberty back and forth back and forth and even in the back i thought you might want to see this there's that nice split you have this wonderful wrapping hood lots of room even like take a look at that little ash tray there it's nice this back window crank and that window comes straight down almost all the way almost all the way all right we have our side vent mirror or windows take a look at that nice paperweight like piece now is that 76 000 original miles correct wow okay so we have our turn signal here so i'm going to go through the different pieces i see this is our emergency brake yes here's our brights on the floor we have obviously our oil pressure our temperature clearly we have our gasoline our charge on our battery tell me what that f is for the f is the fog lights what's the button next to it the button next to it is for the washers for the windshield washer ah okay and then here's two vents i can see that what's the button under here that is the electric fuel pump which has been added okay and the rear heat defrost we have mother mary up here making sure that everything works properly tell me what this little knob is up here that is to turn on the windshield wipers windshield wiper turn on the time period correct radio how about this button over here down here that button is for the the radi the radio's rear seat speaker rear seat speaker and we also have the clock which is interestingly right into the dashboard as you see so there's the dash or the uh glove box not just the dashboard but there now tell me what this is that is a little card that came with every model 62 cadillac that was autographed with the name of the original purchaser wow so that the cadillac motor division was telling the man we were building this car just for you and this is a heater vent correct okay heater event there's actually also a second heating system underneath the seats so you have that heater and then you have a full heater under the front seat so you have two heating systems wow obviously our stick shift from there let me show you the bench and i think what's left is taking it for a ride so ed we're driving the 47 cadillac here in arizona by the way thank you for picking me up when we're going to a car show so there's no better way to go to a car show than well to bring a great car so tell me the interesting thing you were just sharing about the transmission on this one well this 1947 cadillac has a high dramatic transmission and people most people believe that the hydromatics are three speed especially in the 40s 50s and 60s whether or not these are four-speed automatics and the first gear is very low which means it comes in and out of first gear gets you off the line very quickly and it will shift in the second gear usually about five to ten miles an hour and it's it's a somewhat uh somewhat hard shift if you will and i just wanted to share people this wonderful trip down the mountain and we'll just let you take that in what's the reaction when you're cruising on this one this car causes a little bit of uh of interest because it is uh it's big it's a cadillac it's 45 100 pounds so it's it's a large automobile cadillac referred to this series as the series 62 which is the longer wheelbase model and it it has a great presence with all of the chrome and there's a tremendous amount of chrome on this car and in the size and you combine that with the fact that it's a two-door it's not a four-door so it's a fastback sometimes referred to in the industry as said nets which means it has a long sloping rear end and it's a it's a beautiful design much like the it was copied by bentley and the car which they referred to as the continental looks like the observation on a nice uh passenger train at the time and even this windshield for railroad people there's something called an f unit which was a passenger and it had a very similar style to that and just i'll just show you a little bit of this as we ride deep bird on the hood which in the reflection from the light position yeah i'll zone in on it and i'll zone back just to show people on our way to the car show this this is how you do it this is how you do it if you this is fountain hills this is for people who might be interested where this is at fountain hills arizona and we just thought we'd share with you the ride bring your bring your heart rate down a little bit and just enjoy this with us there you go i just thought you'd enjoy that so where ed's giving me the privilege of driving the 47 cadillac and thank you very much but i just thought for you the viewer you might enjoy can you show them our view and just turn that around a little bit those are the four peaks and now you're looking towards the superstitions when you're riding on my car story that's how we like to treat you just like that like one of the family we're going to have a great time today at the car show as we always do and always a treat let alone the fact of getting picked up in a 47 which might have had it was the first year after cars started coming back on the market uh from 42 to 46 they were not being built so this is what did you say this was a 42 tell me about that all right the car is in 1947 and it's basically the same design the same modes as a 1942 so if you put this alongside a 42 cadillac of the same design you really can't tell the difference between the two because after the war gm as all the autos did went back and pulled out the old modes and the tooling for the 42s and just began making 42s again and did that up until about in cadillac's case in 48 when they actually made some fairly major changes to the body style well what a great car and i'm just curious how many of these do you see on the road where you see none sled nets uh the two-door coupe is uh fairly rare we have a number of them in town probably four or five of them which is unusual there are more convertibles than there are two-door coupes so it's it's when you look at the cadillac model line in 1947 this would be the rarest of the 47s the rarest of the 47s ed always a treat what a pleasure so much fun i can't wait to uh see what the reaction is on your car thanks so much for being on my car story well thank you lou [Music] you
