and welcome back now this week we're gonna be talking about hanging it from a circuit diagram like this to a PCB like this and potentially even thinking about a partially assembled SMT board like this one here which is in fact my universal timer that arrived about an hour ago so I've not even had a chance to look at it will test it or anything but at least it's arrived and as you can see some of the components are already on there some resistors capacitors that chip yeah and very nicely looks too but as I said I've not done anything other than just unpack one item but a simple board like this is certainly within the grasp just but everybody watching this video to become honest long as you understand a circuit diagram and don't try and skip steps because quite often people leap into making this bit the actual PCB without having the schematic tied down really well tightly because if there's anything missing or not right with that circuit diagram they'll be missing and not right on here and you it's difficult to correct it once it's done on here and I know ends up yeah I've done it you think I'll just tweak this little bit I just add this little bit up here and before you know it the circuit diagram bears very little resemblance to the PCB anymore and you wonder why you get errors because the the tools that are built into the system didn't pick them up because he didn't know about them okay now I'm doing this because I've had literally a whole raft of people saying I'm really keen on getting into PCBs and all that but you know it's just I'm just not quite sure how to start so I'm gonna pick a very very simple circuit diagram this one here in fact it's a rain detector or water detector something like that it's two transistors it's through-hole technology I've made it deliberately through-hole because if you're creating your own boards like this you're probably going to be wanting to solder them through-hole right now if you don't if you want to do SMD I'm guessing you're already ahead of the game I mean you know about this sort of stuff but maybe not but we do three through-hole technology this time and we'll leave the SMD stuff maybe through another day and why am i using this rather simple circuit working Sookie though it would work if you were to build this B and not something like M with a you know or nano or some other microcontroller because basically okay hands up who wants to watch this video for the next six hours and 701 - is that it there we are you see it's just go on too long you can't learn what I've learnt in the last you know ten months in a half hours video so we're gonna choose something really simple like this but would still work to produce a PCB it doesn't mean you have to actually go out and get the PCB but at least you can go through every single step and be confident in that were you to submit this to Jo C and LCSC you would actually get back exactly what you've designed and from there you can move on to other stuff the amount of learning you can get something like this is not to be underestimated okay before we do anything else let's have a message from a sponsor that makes this video possible I just first of all must must start with a scheme schematic alright sometimes they call this a schema but it's not it's a schematic it's a circuit diagram okay as I was picked up on the comment last week and I think it's right that we should learn the correct terminology this is a schematic diagram a circuit diagram not a schemer a scheme is something totally different okay so this is a circuit diagram that I've literally just threw together just to make some kind of rain detail basically these two transistors will sound the noise from the speaker if rain bridges the tracks here and by tracks it's something like this which this one looks a bit messy because it's been outside for the last year or more this is a rain detector you can pick these up Aliexpress banggood probably as well and these these tracks that you see here do not join they just go up and down inside each other if you like and then come out in two pins here which as you can see a well rusty anyway but they don't touch but when the rain drops on here enough current flows through the rain the dirty rain because it's got stuff in it to bridge the tracks and that tiny tiny little bear current that flows from this resistor then through here now through the raindrop turns this transistor on which then turns this one on and they oscillate and they make a noise out here so simple little design and the first thing you do having thoughts path and designed it is to put onto a breadboard and I'm assuming you've got to that stage you've thought of a circuit you've put it on a breadboard you've proved that it works and you're happy with it for example this 330k resistor here you might decide actually it works better with a 270 or 180 or a 1 mega ohm and you won't know that until you actually try it out some bits of theory go out the window really when you actually do it in practice so it's important to get this working first of all on a breadboard now you don't have to use the three volt coin cell batteries on gangster in the design you can use a power supply versus on your bench but don't use a five volt supply and then try and switch it for three volt because that will adjust how this operates so you must get a solid circuit like this put it on a breadboard get it working and anything right I think I'm ready for the next step the next step or the first step in your design for real is going to be putting this into a schematic editor so gate diagram editor and there are plenty of them out there and you guys who are experienced in this source stuff have indicated to me all the ones you prefer I mean there's Eagle there's easy da there's kicad there's there's oh yeah they're all on screen there well there's a couple more now you only know whether you light blows by trying them but you got to get to grips with one of them and to become honest when I started off I found ez EDA well pretty easy and intuitive is it's not like a paint program exactly but it's it's you know veering towards that it does what you think it should do you know when you click the mouse and push the cursor and all that so that's what I'm gonna use for this and there are certain advantages to using ez the yay above and beyond the program itself one is when you're selecting all these components you can go to the LCSC library and say I want to trance a lot of this name here and I want a 10 nano farad capacitor it goes oh yeah go on eyes which one of these six did you want and then you could look at the size and the price and everything else and select one and then you can either order the stuff from LC LC or if you go and make the PCP from j LC PCB you can all the components via them and you get some kind of discounts looking for the discounts bear the top the page however it's not the discounts that some intrigued me so much and make me quite excited about this is the fact that you've got three bits of an puzzle here joining together you make the schematic here select the components from LC RC and when you then go onto the PCB design and actually place all the components on the PCB board you then send that to jl c PCB and the circles complete you've got everything and there are no surprises j LC will not come back to you and go we don't know about this transistor well they do cuz they're part of the same family let's see how we can get to this diagram now very easily from the original one that we had on our desktop this one here okay right step one right the first step obviously is to download easy EDA you can use it on the web as part of them a browser but it works better I think if you download the client and run it on your own warpage and there'll be another reason for running it on your own web bench when we get to the PCB design bit so make your choice but I would say download it and run it from there so you're presented with this page initially when you load up easy oh look there's there's the discount is telling about eight dollars off first electronics part order so you just say new project fill into these details here which is basically the title of the project and press save right so now you're presented with a blank piece of paper a phase where you can draw your circuit diagram on and now to zoom in and out use the middle mouse button so you can go from tiny to huge and you will want to zoom in as you as you wire things up to make sure you're absolutely spot-on but the first thing you need to do then is refer back to your circuit diagram so let me bring that into the picture right so there we are so the first thing you need to do then is place a component on this nice new sheet of paper now the place command is at the top here so you just say place click that and then say component you know and then immediately you'll get this list of all the things you can put up there and the search engine can either be easy da or LCSC keep it too easy the easy EDA unless there's a reason not to and well let's search for example for that transistor 2 into 9 0 7 and immediately to come up under the LCSC banner here - they're both pretty much the same actually if you click on them over on this side here if I move this over you might get a better picture that's the symbol that's what it looks like when it's on the PCB and that's the real life product the actual transistor now if you click on the real life product that will take you to the LCSC website and show you a bit more about it there it is and there's more information about here you can be data sheets on it you can scroll down and see some of the main information and it's a really good way of confirming really that you have got the component you want or selecting maybe a different component in my go mm-hmm that wasn't quite the one I wanted I wanted a 4 amp transistor on the 2 m transistor or something well you're given the chance then to find out if they've got it the part number here is what matters as far as LCS Eakins is concerned so yeah that's this I find that very useful indeed now let's assume then that we are in fact going to select the 2n - 907 a version because I think that is the only version available if you ordered the other one you probably would get the a anyway and as you can see the product the the price is shown in the bottom left hand corner over here and that means point naught one nine one cents that's nearly two cents apiece and they've got three thousand more nearly four thousand items and the minimum quantity new order is 20 now don't let this put you off if you're ordering items like this for two cents but you have to order 20 of them because they won't sell it to you singly it's just 20 times 2 isn't it so you're talking about 40 cents worth and then you'll have 20 of these components so when you blow up 2 and let the magic smoke exit from that little device you still have plenty of spares it's a no-brainer we'll come on to the actual full price of this entire little project a little bit further down the line but you'll be pleasantly surprised now you've selected your product and you think I care that's the transistor I want yeah that's fine you then hit place and as you can see behind my cursor quite small there's a little transistor so what I'm gonna do is use my middle mouse button to zoom in there we are that says Q what Q being the prefix for a transistor 2 + 2 907 well let's just plunk that anywhere shall we that's all clicked now if I move my mouse away you see it gives me a chance to place another one now you can either here escape right-click at this point to exit that talling again that's it done that's your first component placed and if we zoom back out again you'll see how small that is compared to the rest of it so you can get quite a lot in this page okay so that's that's your first component placed now let's do a different type of component and I'm not going to go through each one because you've already indicated you're not willing for six hours while I do all this so let's just play sign though a resistor which is a good one isn't it right once again then so you can either go to up here place component or what I do shift F okay so just a shorthand now you can either go down here and type in resistor we'll just scroll down resistors right so it is in fact a carbon film resistor and you can sort by resistance just by clicking on it you could have put something in the search bar here whichever way you go you experiment with this sort of selection device and you'll find that there are ways to do it sorting by various columns so searching by typing something in here yeah there's lots of ways anyway we're after a 10k so I'm gonna scroll down till I hit 10k here we are look now there's quite a few so there's one for example and there's a little picture of it right I've actually chosen this one here which is one-sixth watt which is absolutely fine for our needs you can see a picture if you want more details click on the picture and you'll be taken to the full breakdown of it that's the symbol that's what it looks like on the PCB great let's place that and there is and then right click and that's it another component is placed now there's only one more component I'm going to show you that I'm placing here because it's a slightly odd one if we look again at the workbench on here we've said there's a sensor here and I want it to look a little bit like this don't I so that's something that you can go out and buy that LCSC wouldn't stock this is something you'd buy an Aliexpress or bangle or even ebay in fact you could buy the whole lot this plus a bit of electron it's go on it but let's assume you just want this board ok you can see what it looks like but you'd only want to represent that in the actual schematic here so what do you do well luckily for us if we go back to the building of the circuit because I've been through this route 1 so I know what's on there but if you notice if we type in a search term I haven't put in rain drop for example and hit the search button now you'll see here that my workspace has got an example of this because I've already been working on it I'll say so you don't have any you can't stand leave a message else here see either the system doesn't know about it you can't follow somebody who's got one and user contributions though they've got six of them now I've copied one of those and amended it a little bit to make it useful to us and here it is now that's it the way you grab a component copy it into your own works by seeking edit it is slightly beyond this beginners thing but just in case you're interested having selected an item you can click on the more button here say clone and that will place it into your own library it takes a few seconds for it to appear and then they'll appear just like this one here and this is in my library it says owner Ralph bacon that's me and then you can edit it to your heart's desire however because I've already done that hard work we'll just assume that you've edited or selected to even created this footprint bill I'm not going to go into how to do that now and we'll place that one and here it is and oh look it looks fairly similar to the one we've got unfortunately it's upside-down in this diagram to turn things around you select it make it go red and you hit the are full row tight and I rotate it that way that way which is the way I want it and then you can left-click it and move it into place now the idea is that you first of all place all your components on this bit of paper paper and I would say spread them out a bit you can always shrink things in later but if you start putting components too close you'll never quite see the wood for the trees as anywhere right now unfortunately in this demo that's what we've got time for placing components but - I'll show you how to wire them up so at least we have an idea of what it looks should look like before we go back to thee I've already done this and here's the finished product so wiring a component to another component the battery and everything else first you have to look at these wiring tools this little thing here and it's this first one he needs to select this is wire so we can select that go to the components now you can see it's turned into a dot there but you really need to zoom in so you can get really on this all right and you can right click and drag to move it into space there it is so we wire from there up here and now I want to turn right on it lets me turn right if it didn't just click again so that it doesn't think you're trying to move somewhere else and there we are when you've made connection that's it that's all what it does a nice green bar if you were to connect something else into here you'd get a join if there isn't a join there's not a connection so just as an example this is not as per the circuit diagram but if we want to join pin 1 of that sensor into here see it stops there click and then you get this join symbol if that joins symbol were not present then it's not joined so for example if I rooted this war from here across here back down here and into here this is not a join ok unless you get that red splodge it's not a joint ok that's how you wire things up you need to put your battery component on there the other two resistors the capacitors and believe me as a beginner if this is the very first time you've done it you'll be spending a lot of time in that component selection this one here because there are literally hundreds of thousands of components in the LCSC library that you can select and well you just need to go through and select the ones you need and think about why it is you're selecting that is it the physical size is that the tolerance is the temperature for this little circuit doesn't really make a lot of difference but you don't really want a big fat capacitor well a little tiny one would work and as I say we're choosing through-hole components for this particular demo but for the SMD it works pretty much the same except they must appear under the LCAC assembled list if it appear under their assembled list then they can't assemble it okay right I think that's enough about placing simple components on a piece of paper there's obviously a lot more to it that you can do but we're just gonna leave it there and go back to the finished product the one I finished earlier right this is the one that I'd completed earlier Neji you say it's just a continuation of what you've just previously seen I place all the components spread them out a bit then just wired them together at various points and that's it I chose a 3 volt coin cell holder here it seemed easy to run on the 3 volt coin cell and of course because this is not normally connected other than by rain it should never run out so if you're doing the washing for example you have to take the bushing out take this little device with you and place it somewhere will get rained on but no battery power is being used until it rains I guess a switch in this line here would probably be called for in a real life project but for simplicity we'll leave that help for now ok so you've done all this and you think yeah that's all pretty much what I wanted it to be you can look at your bill of materials at this point to see whether you've missed anything else so your bill of materials which is basically a shopping list of all your components the name of it the component designator down here cubing transistor our four resistors c4 capacitor it also gives you the price of each individual component down there so you think yeah I've got everything set up I know exactly where to buy all these not that you have to buy them all for example if you already add 2032 n 2 2 2 s it doesn't mean you have to buy anymore even though this is selected from the LCSC catalog you just remove it eventually when you send in your order you say don't send me any of those now be fine now it says here order parts on check stock negging is a good idea to do that and we'll do that next and talk about price right so we're going to talk about price now and how to order so we click this button here and they'll bring up a browser window back to the LCSC here he goes let me move across swing it's importing the Bill of Materials and goes right here's all your stuff and it says oh hang on a minute you've ordered one of these this two in two two two two a but actually the minimum purchase of twenty you think no I don't want to spend that sort of money if you look at it they are in fact no point not one nine cents each which is two cents each and you've ordered one of them but actually you've got to order 20s and it stopped in twenty there and you can see now that the price of it has gone up to 38 cents yeah so what I mean it just doesn't make a huge difference because components are the cheap bit of this whole exercise anyway there's lots more ways as you've got to order a certain amount so I'm gonna fill in all those for you and we'll come back to the total cost okay I've been down the list filled in where the multiples that said you got by 20 or whatever sum you up to by 50 of but don't let that put you off because look I bought 50 of these what is it capacitor and the total price is in fact 25 cents yeah so you know the total cost of all these components is $2 and well 20 cents I suppose that is 1997 pretty good isn't it as I say the components not worry the time is the most expensive part of this entire project and that'll be your time but as you're a hobbyist I guess it doesn't really matter too much does it right so we're come to the next stage of this which is to actually produce the PCB now now as I say don't rush into that bit make sure you look at this circuit diagram you've checked all the individual components value you've been on 12 C need to find out whether they've got the stuff and how much it costs you don't want any funny surprises like you've just happened to pick the only capacitor in the entire world that costs five dollars a piece okay we don't any of that so double-check triple-check anything right everything's okay on here I want to convert this to a PCB now how do I do that now if only we had enough time in this particular to do the PCB bit as well it'd be great unfortunately I've I've checked the time and it's already half an hour now so the very next video is gonna be part two and everybody likes it in the PCB bit why is he building something I mean you really you know designing well like this one down here it's it's nice to actually you know place component outlines and all that on the board and yeah play about line things up put a bit text on as I've done on here yeah it's lovely but as I say do the first bit first before we come into this otherwise things quickly come undone and unraveled so now in this video obviously are promoted quite heavily j LC LC SC and easy EDA but for no other reason then I use them they are tools that I use and I find the the three-way triangle of those three particular products and then services absolutely ideal for beginners and I still classed myself as a beginner become honest how many PCBs have I made in my time ten perhaps so next time when you're still going to be using ez EDA to create the PCB it's it's a joy to do there's an auto Rooter so you don't even have to do any wiring if you don't want to but there's always a little bit fun in doing that as well so if you like this video I'll certainly hope you do please do give it a thumbs up because that
