ever stood at the edge of some huge chasm and tried to figure out how deep the darkness goes sure you might throw a rock or a stick down into the dark depths and as it tumbles down you're waiting for that distinct clink to give you some comfort ah there it is no need to worry it's not that deep well sadly there are some terrifying portals on this planet that just keep going and going plummeting deep into the endless abyss where that comforting clink never comes from literal gateways to hell to cursed mine shafts here are the 15 scariest holes found on earth the mirror mine is about 1700 feet deep and is one of the largest mines in the world don't forget to hit the like button subscribe to missing files and click the notification bell for the best daily videos mysterious holes in siberia for our first entry we should probably draw your attention toward this incredibly strange occurrence that has recently been found in the wilderness of siberia russia's outermost territory of twisting forests in endless plains of ice and snow back in 2014 massive hoes began appearing in remote parts of siberia and it had scientists and researchers scratching their heads for answers one of the craters that had randomly appeared in the yamaha peninsula spanned over 100 feet wide and after garnering international attention dozens of theories began pouncing across the internet as to how they could have been formed well as you know internet conspiracy theories are rarely the place for definitive answers and as the months passed by no answers could be found in an even more terrifying turn of events in the following year dozens more of these mystery holes began forming turning the heat up for the need of an explanation and well terrifyingly the truth is there are no definitive answers however for scientists one thing may be certain global warming has played its part in the formation of these bizarre voids in the siberian wilderness and after an abundance of methane was found at the bottom of one of these mysterious craters we may be one step closer to understanding these disturbing geological voids if true then scientists believe that these staggering craters were created by underground explosions deep in the earth's core caused by a knock-on chain effect from the ecological devastation caused by climate change if we're not careful then we may be seeing more of these terrifying holes [Music] guatemala sinkhole speaking of sinkholes well this one may very well be the most terrifying instance in modern memory back in 2010 following the devastation caused by tropical storm agatha that struck central america a portion of guatemala city was swallowed whole by a nightmare straight out of a horror movie after the storm had ravaged the region in the following days it was believed that the underlying limestone rock that the area had been built upon had suffered substantial loss and then without warning a portion of intersection in the city slipped back into the depths of the earth's crust all in all this staggering sinkhole was roughly 60 feet wide and over 300 feet deep these images are truly terrifying and the sheer scale of the sinkhole is almost too unimaginable to be true in fact the guatemala sinkhole was so terrifying that many news outlets and social media sources believed it to be photoshopped at first sadly the devastation caused was all too real however as it turned out it wasn't entirely mother nature's fault after an inquiry later revealed that a faulty storm drain had hollowed out the underground cavity that allowed the chasm to form as the majority of the city is also built on similar geological inconsistencies sadly we may be seeing more of these terrifying holes in the future berkeley pick copper mine back at the turn of the last century butte montana was the site of a thriving copper mine so successful that it was once dubbed the richest hill in the world incredibly over a billion tons of copper ore silver and gold were extracted from the rock of southwestern montana and in return the small mining town of butte became one of the richest communities in the country sadly as the decades ticked by once cheap mining operations quickly became a costly endeavor and after cutting corners by pumping endless amounts of chemicals and siphoning water from a nearby lake the berkeley pit became too toxic and acidic for any form of life to live by 1983 the once richest hill in the world became so exhausted that the mining company packed up all of their equipment and moved to plunder another scrap of earth and this terrifying toxic pit was left behind to fester and stew as one of the deadliest places on earth too toxic for even microorganisms to live in well or so it was thought because in 1995 a team of chemists discovered a terrifying clump of green slime floating on the water's surface and as it turned out the berkeley pit had become so polluted that it gave life to a whole new branch of mutant organisms yeah yikes dean's blue hole bahamas while dean's blue hole in the bahamas may sound like a picturesque and tropical paradise on the surface in reality it's far from it located in a secluded bay just west of clarencetown on long island this otherwise dreamlike setting has attracted adventurers and thrill-seekers alike for decades surrounded by powder white sand beaches and bordered by a natural rock amphitheater like something straight from a video game dean's blue hole in the bahamas is actually the second deepest underwater on the planet spanning over 663 feet down into the depths of the atlantic ocean technically speaking any type of blue hole is actually a sinkhole that is filled with water while the entrance to them is located beneath the surface sure they're a rare occurrence but given the fact that the average blue hole is around 300 feet deep dean's blue hole is a terrifying exception at over double that size back in 2013 a professional free nicholas mavoli tragically lost his life in an effort to break the american record warning others as to the immense danger encapsulated in this unassuming paradise mer diamond mind siberia while we've already touched on the terrifying voids that have plagued the remote landscape of siberia believe it or not there's much more where that came from if you thought the mysterious siberian holes were weird then let us turn your attention toward the myrrh diamond mine one of the biggest human-made holes on the entire planet that is so immensely large that it allegedly has a habit of sucking helicopters into its cavernous depths wait what yeah you heard that right merny mine otherwise known as mermine is an enormous open-pit kimberlite diamond mine located in eastern siberia at its deepest the myrrh diamond mine is known as one of the largest man-made holes ever excavated after the diamond-rich deposit had been discovered back in 1955 by soviet geologists at an eye-watering depth of 1722 feet this astonishing abyss also has a diameter of almost 4000 feet stretching out across the landscape that can still be seen from thousands of miles in the air although the mine has been abandoned since 2001 rumor has it that the hole is so big it can suck helicopters out of the sky and locals believe that to be the reason why it was shut spooky [Music] mariana trench pacific ocean at the bottom of everything it seems that our deepest and darkest fears may already be crawling its way seven miles beneath the ocean waves the mariana trench is a name synonymous with the terrifying depths of the seven seas and as we explore our way ever deeper the potential of finding new forms of life down there is an increasing cause for concern the dark truth is we know more about the moon than we do about our own oceans and for the mariana trench the deepest underwater trench in the world we know even less than that its maximum known depth is a staggering 36 000 feet accumulating in a small underwater valley known as the challenger deep however even that is uncertain as several other attempts to measure the mariana trench have reported far deeper depths to put the mariana trench into perspective if mount everest was placed into the trench at its deepest point then its peak would still be over two kilometers underwater that fact alone is staggering no wonder people have speculated as to why terrifying creatures could be lurking down there should we even find out whatever the case the mariana trench may be among the most terrifying abyssal voids on the planet ice cube neutrino observatory hole all right let's step away from the plunging depths of the planet's core for a moment and instead take a look at an entirely different kind of terrifying hole well from a subatomic level anyway you see science is filled with frightening frontiers constantly pushing toward the upper limits of the forces that have shaped our universe seeking the truth behind the mechanics that make our cosmic existence because of that scientists have gone to staggering lengths in engineering the conditions behind our astral creation and one of those pursuits has been in discovering neutrinos ghostly particles that could potentially pass straight through earth without ever running into another atom while theoretically they exist science needs concrete evidence to verify them and in return potentially unlock the secrets of the universe in order to discover the neutrino researchers in antarctica have built a contraption that may do exactly that the ice cube neutrino observatory a structure that plunges over 8 000 feet beneath the ice built back in 2010 this astonishing structure bores unimaginably deep holes into the antarctic ice and it remains to be the only structure of its kind whether it will find evidence of scientific wonders we're yet to find out but there's also the off chance that it could disturb some lovecrafty and old god too probably not worth the risk right el zacatone mexico if you thought some of these terrifyingly deep holes were scary well you ain't seen nothing yet imagine a sinkhole so unbelievably deep that it takes a nasa-funded expedition as well as an entire institute of robotics excerpts just to figure out where it ends such is the case with mexico's el zacatone a geothermal sinkhole that's over 1000 feet deep although no living being has ever reached the bottom to find out and one brave diver even lost their life in the process following the mission from nasa the autonomous robotics submarine managed to measure its depth at 1047 feet but as a geothermal sinkhole there is the possibility that el zacatone may be even deeper terrifyingly it's not the only one of its kind and the entire region of northeastern mexico is believed to be plagued with dozens of these pre-volcanic caverns yikes forest sinkholes china all right on the topic of sinkholes we can't ignore the gaping chasms that have since revealed themselves across the woodland regions of china's shangji province in a series of astonishing discoveries that have since thrown into contention our knowledge of earth and exploration back in 2016 scientists in china shocked the geological community after 49 massive sinkholes were discovered as part of a four-month survey in the kin ling bashan mountains clustered in a 230 square mile patch of land the largest of the sinkholes was revealed to have a diameter of 1706 feet and an eye watering depth of 1050 feet it's believed that these terrifying forest sinkholes were likely formed over hundreds of thousands of years as underground water slowly dissolved carbonate rock deep beneath the surface pretty spooky right great blue hole belize technically listed as an underwater sinkhole the gray blue hole is almost perfectly circular in shape covering over 984 feet in width and plunging down for a staggering 410 feet located in the center of the lighthouse reef a smaller toe 62 miles from the mainland it's the world's largest natural formation of its kind as you may imagine these facts have earned the great blue hole the highly coveted reputation as one of the most luxurious diving spots on the planet but very few explorers have dared to venture to its darkest depths in the hope of discovering what lies at the bottom incredibly after conducting a vigorous exploration a team of scientists recently discovered that the great blue hole of belize is actually filling up over decades they noticed that every day the great blue hole is hit by a waterfall of sand plunging from the surface down into the underbelly slowly every day the great blue hole is actually filling up like an underwater hourglass and it will only be a matter of time before it's completely filled like a long forgotten tune potentially sealing away its underwater secrets forever and given the potential terrors that are lurking at the bottom of the mariana trench we should probably be thankful the gates of hell turkmenistan ever wondered what a portal to the underworld would look like well with a name like the gates of hell this terrifying borehole in turkmenistan may be the closest some of us will ever get to witnessing the demonic hellfire of the afterlife okay maybe that's a little bit of an exaggeration but whatever your belief system the gates of hell are a terrifying reminder of the irreversible damage that us humans can cause to our own planet located deep within the sand dunes of the caricom desert the darwaza crater is a cavern of burning methane gas believed to have been engulfed in flames ever since 1971 with a diameter of 230 feet and a depth of 98 feet it's officially unknown as to what caused the burning hellfires of the darwaza crater but the locals believe that a group of soviet geologists accidentally created the crater in their search for oil in an attempt to burn away the dangerous methane contained within the crater the group reportedly set it on fire hoping that it would only take a couple of weeks to burn away little did they know it's been burning ever since bushman's hole bushman's hole otherwise known as boitman's gat is another terrifying entry into the eye-watering category of impossibly deep sinkholes located at an altitude of over 4 750 feet above sea level bushman's hole consists of a freshwater cave that plunges nearly 900 feet into the murky blue waters of south africa's mount carmel making it one of the deepest underwater sinkholes on the planet while there are certainly other sinkholes that take the prize in terms of sheer depth bushman's hole has since gained a terrifying reputation for taking the lives of experienced divers and adventurers alike while there have been countless incidents throughout history the first logged accident was in 1994 after a 20 year old diver died while exploring the cavern with his father his remains weren't found for another decade although his body was deemed too dangerous to retrieve the spillway hole lake berryessa if you think you've already seen the most terrifying hole on planet earth well think again because the spillway hole in lake berryessa is the stuff of nautical nightmares and despite its abyssal disposition this immense aquatic phenomenon is actually the result of human engineering obviously it's not deliberate or at least that's what they tell us imagine peering down into this bottomless spiraling pit where one fast move would result in you slipping away into the rolling waters forever well it sounds pretty horrifying although it may look like a death trap the spillway hole's actual purpose could save countless lives believe it or not but the lake berryessa hole acts as a giant drain from the nearby monticello dam in napa valley california despite its terrifying appearance its design is relatively simple when the lake reaches its maximum capacity after heavy rainfall the berryessa spillway collects the overflowing water and transported 2 000 feet into the nearby puda creek just don't be tempted to dip your toe in because there's no coming back from that one [Music] mount baldy sinkhole indiana sure we've had sinkholes in the middle of urban epicenters we've had them in remote forests and we've had them at the bottom of the ocean floor but how about a sinkhole in the middle of a sand dune as you may imagine if that sounds like something straight out of a horror movie it really is and the mount baldy sinkhole in indiana is considered to be one of the most dangerous areas in the midwest rising 126 feet from the nearby beach mount baldy is considered one of the tallest lakefront dunes in the world and has been notorious for its ravaging winds and swarming sands however back in 2013 as a group of tourists and beachgoers enjoyed their surroundings a sinkhole suddenly formed on the slopes of mount baldy swallowing a six-year-old boy in an invisible cavern of sand as emergency services struggled for over six hours to dig him out he was finally retrieved although he was instantly feared dead after suffocating in the doom believe it or not but minutes later while in the ambulance the young boy coughed and sputtered and incredibly survived to tell the tale of his ordeal [Music] and finally for our last stop on this terrifying tour of scary subterranean holes let's take a look at lake assault and djibouti an otherwise picture-perfect lakeside paradise in east africa that harbors one of the most unsuspecting dangers on the planet a lake assault may appear to be a water-filled crater similar to the crystal blue waters of the caribbean it's actually one of the saltiest places on earth at 508 feet below sea level lake assault is technically the third lowest point on the planet's surface and the waters that make up the area have an average salt concentration of around 40 percent to put that into perspective that's 10 times saltier than seawater and for those unfortunate enough to fall victim to its raging winds they're in for a world of hurt hint salt tornado yeah if you've got a paper cut you should definitely avoid this place well there we have it the 15 scariest holes found on earth what'd
