ancient egypt was a place of wonder and each and every day we stumbled upon all new facts that made clear just how incredibly ahead of their own time the ancient egyptians truly were in many ways we are still yet to catch up there are some things about egypt that remain enigmatic to this day these are the most mysterious discoveries made in egypt [Applause] number 15 serapium of sakhara we know that the ancient egyptians built lavish temples and funeral structures where they would bury those most important to society but there's one discovery that surprised everyone known as the serapium of saqqara it's located near memphis and was first uncovered in 1850 when a researcher spotted the head of a sphinx emerging from the desert sands explosives were used to clear the area and the entrance to a catacomb was revealed evidence was found that showed this place once had a boulevard leading to it that had 600 sphinxes alongside with the complex being believed to have been constructed during the reign of neptune beau the first the contents of the site were the most mysterious though because inside there were no remains of people but instead the mummified bodies of 25 apis bulls animals that were revered by the egyptians as incarnations of one of their gods but why were these ones treated in such a special way historians have suggested various theories mainly related to the pharaoh's insistence that the god of craftsmen and architects was appeased by the burial but there are some who think there's a deeper mystery to be solved because very few other burials have been found from the same time period could this lead to a new set of previously unexplored tombs only time will tell like this video smash the subscribe button and click the notification bell right now or this centipede will crawl on your face when you're sleeping [Music] now it's time for the juicy topic egypt has long had a surprising connection to intergalactic discoveries for example a gemstone found in tutankhamun's tomb was actually formed from a meteor crash meaning he had a little piece of outer space affirmara in his possession the gem had been carved into a little glass beetle how incredible is that king tutankhamun owned a glass beetle that came from outer space and people now think that beetle may be far from the only intergalactic object to crash into the sands of egypt a recent archaeological dig unearthed this strange thing a passing glance would suggest that this is the corpse of an alien body it certainly has the proportions of the classic grey alien albeit with glowing blue skin instead of the traditionally muted grey naturally people are skeptical and there is a major reason why some locals are known to bury fake things among sites of curiosity as something of a practical joke on american archaeologists it's happened before but as of yet nobody has come forward admitting to the joke taken at face value it certainly looks like the remains of a deceased alien some people have claimed the corpse was found too deep to be the work of practical jokers but then again some pranksters are very committed what do you think remember to comment down below with the hashtag juicytopic and let us know your opinion in relation to what we just showed on screen and now to the next topic number 14 kufu ship mystery while you may know that the great pyramid of giza was a burial site [Music] did you know that a ship was found buried there too since its discovery historians have wondered what purpose it served and why the ancient egyptians felt the need to bury it there and recent studies have helped to understand more it dates from the same time as the pyramid was built around 2500 years ago and is thought to have been built for pharaoh khufu who was the second ruler of the fourth dynasty of ancient egypt and was the one who built the world famous pyramid the ship is 143 feet long and 19.5 feet wide and is one of the best preserved vessels from the ancient world it's now kept in the giza solar boat museum and was originally found in a disassembled form before being reconstructed it's made from lebanon cedarwood and by all accounts would still be able to sail on water to this day no one really knows what a ship like this would have been used for though it's a type called a solar barge which is a ritual vessel designed for carrying its owner across the heavens with the sun god ra but this one has definite signs that it was used on water before being buried could it have been the ceremonial ship that sailed the pharaoh's body to the pyramid before he was buried or was there another purpose for it unless further evidence is found we may never truly know number 13 tomb of the silver pharaoh despite the best attempts of tomb designers most were plundered by thieves throughout history in search of the rich treasures they contained even tutankhamun's tomb had been robbed several times likely soon after he had been buried but there is one that had been found that hadn't been pilfered at all known as nrt13 it was the resting place of susans the first who ruled between 147 to 1001 bc the location of his tomb in lower egypt was very moist so unfortunately most of the wood that was inside had long since rutted away but everything else was virtually just how it was when the vault was sealed the king's funerary mask was one of the most incredible to ever be found and was made from solid gold and lapis lazuli and black and white glass for decoration gold was a common material to be used in burials of important figures but this tomb contained another precious metal that rarely featured in ancient egypt silver inside his sarcophagus was a second coffin made from silver and would have been far more valuable than anything made from gold it had links with their moon god and is an extreme sign of wealth from a time when the egyptian economy was falling into decline why this king was important enough for this why no one dared steal treasures from his tomb and what the intended purpose of his coffin was is not clear and will continue to be a mystery until another tomb is found with a similar design number 12 the valley of golden mummies in 1996 egyptologist zahi hawas and his team made one of the largest archaeological discoveries of recent times in egypt while searching the baharia oasis in the country's western desert at first they recovered 250 mummies all of which were more than 2 000 years old and the latest estimates suggest there could be as many as 10 000 still buried there most were in remarkably good condition and had been decorated along four main styles and buried with countless previous artifacts most were covered in gold and the discovery represents one of the largest troves of the precious metal from the ancient world the question of course is why were so many people buried like this on one hand in such a lavish way but on the other hand in a place that appeared to be a massive grave the time they date back to was the heyday of mummification and the process had become a vital part of the egyptian economy it could be possible that there are other sites like this across the country and would force us to rethink the way ordinary members of egyptian society were treated following death number 11. roman era mummy found an egyptian oasis in 2010 a rather peculiar discovery was made at the baharia oasis in egypt's western desert which is a place known for the countless artifacts that have been found there researchers uncovered a new tomb complex but within it was a three foot long sarcophagus of a woman that's thought to date to the time of the roman rule in the empire between 31 bc and the 7th century the mystery here is who she was and why she was buried there it's the only mummy dating from that period to have been found at the oasis and from many hundreds of years later than any other mummies that have been discovered nearby she was covered in molded plaster that depicted her wearing a tunic headscarf necklace bracelet and shoes but there were no further clues about who she was and why she appeared to have been treated so differently to anyone else could she have been a long-lost queen or perhaps being only three feet tall maybe the daughter of a senior egyptian who was buried in secret away from the prying eyes of the roman authorities hopefully further excavations around the oasis may one day uncover the truth number 10. rare statue of king ramses ii in 2019 the egyptian ministry of antiques announced the discovery of an incredibly rare artifact what they believed was a statue of king ramses ii they had found the location 15 miles from giza after arresting a man for illegally excavating his land the statue is made from pink granite and is just under 3.5 feet tall in egyptian society objects like this were created as a resting place for a person's life force which they called the kha and this statue bore the symbol of ka on it only one other statue of ramses the second with a kha symbol has ever been found and it was far less extravagant having been made from wood the ministry announced this statue to be one of the rarest discoveries to have ever been made and that a caw vessel had never before been found that was made from granite let alone the rarer pink granite this then raises the question of whether they were far more common than had been thought but for some reason many of them were either destroyed or hidden so well that they hadn't been found or that ramses the second was seen as so important that this one off sculpture was made number nine ancient statue of nubian king in 2008 researchers working on an archaeological dig in sudan found the head of a statue that for 10 years was unidentified until further fragments were discovered in 2018. while they helped answer some questions about the artifact they raised a mystery too the statue is thought to have once stood place in the kingdom of nubia and based on the inscriptions that have been deciphered from the fragments it was the ruler aspelta his likeness was carved around 2 600 years ago and the hieroglyphics said he was beloved of a god and given all life stability and domination forever as pelta was known to rule the cush kingdom between 593 and 568 bc and this latest discovery implies that he and his predecessors once controlled much of egypt with one phrase stating that he was the king of upper and lower egypt the mystery though is whether this was actually true or not because it would mean reworking out understanding of the ancient empire are these words a true reflection of the reach of his power or simply an assertion of authority from a neighboring kingdom instead of being an actual claim it's hoped further research at the site known as dangel will find crucial evidence to find out for certain number 8 26th dynasty high priests and officials from around 2500 years ago the egyptian ministry of antiques announced in january 2020 that they had made an astonishing discovery one that was all the more special because it was found where extensive previous excavations had taken place already the find took place at the al gorifa site which is around 186 miles south of kario and to their surprise encompassed 16 tombs which contained 20 sarcophagi some were engraved with hieroglyphics and are believed to date to around 3 000 years ago translations of the text say that the tombs were dedicated to the high priests of the god dehudi and that they were from the 15th gnome which was a territory of ancient egypt one sarcophagus that was found was dedicated to the god horus and the 20 were made of stone or wood two were said to be in very good condition while many of the others had decayed over time but there was one that stood out over the rest this wooden coffin contained the remnants of a man called her who was a high priest of the god dehudi the inscriptions on the lid are believed to be the nicknames of the leaders of the region in central egypt and is an amazingly important artifact number 7. old tomb of an egyptian royal priest in 2018 archaeologists revealed the contents of a new tomb that had been found in the royal burial ground of sakhara near cario thought to be around 4 000 years old the carvings at the tombs entrance say that it was owned by a man called wati who worked for the king neferikari who was a little-known pharaoh from the fifth dynasty at some point between 2500 and 2350 bc according to hieroglyphics wati was an important figure in the governance of the country and was the royal purification priest the royal supervisor and also the official inspector of the sacred boat inside the tomb was a 33 by 10 foot gallery that contained colorful ornaments and images of the priest along with his family there were further scenes that depicted musicians potters winemakers and sailors and a series of statues of as of yet unidentified people the find shows that it wasn't just the pharaohs that were buried in such impressive ways but also other important members of society and it's from places like these that we have been able to learn so much more about their culture and civilization number six the sarcophagi one of the things every egyptologist dreams of is the discovery of an intact tomb and with some luck a sarcophagus they never quite know what they'll find inside and it could be a person an animal or even a long-lost ancient pharaoh sakhara is a well-known burial site near kario and has been the source of countless finds in the past century here researchers are opening a sarcophagus that was found there for the first time and as soon as the lid is opened you get a sense of how well constructed these objects were it's made from limestone and is at least 15 inches thick and contains a perfectly preserved mummy often trinkets would have been placed in there too to accompany the departed soul on their journey into the afterlife and the whole process played a fundamental role in the ancient egyptians perceptions of death and what comes next the question that has long been wondered however is how the distinction was made between who would be buried like this and who wouldn't wealth of course played a large part in that decision but there had been evidence of less important members of society being fully buried and also of pharaohs who weren't afforded such luxuries number five mummified babies found in tutankhamun's tomb the discovery of tutankhamun's tomb remains one of the grandest archaeological finds in human history but beyond the mysteries about the boy king his life and why he died are the questions about why he was buried with some unusual objects most notably was the presence of two embryos that were buried in jars alongside him dna tests have suggested that at least one of them may have been high daughter but we don't know whether they had died of natural causes or whether something far more sinister took place it's believed they were put there to accompany and protect him in the afterlife but again what benefit would two unborn children give him could this be an indication that the ancient egyptians believed that embryos held the key to a successful existence in the afterlife or was this a rare situation that just so happened to take place with the burial of tutankhamun because almost every tomb that's ever been found has been robbed before it was fully excavated it's quite possible that similar artifacts from elsewhere were stolen along with the other treasures number four screaming mummy while most mummies went through a tired and tested process to fully equip them for their journey into the afterlife there were some that were mummified in a different way which some suspect was a form of punishment because of misdeeds during life on this plane of existence the most famous of these is often referred to as the screaming mummy and is the remains of prince pentahoer he was well known for attempting to kill his father ramses iii and committed suicide while he was on trial his body was not filled with embalming fluid and instead of being preserved mummified naturally as his skin dried his mouth stretched open and his facial muscles strained which has resulted in him looking like he's in excruciating agony was this done to him as revenge for what he did or simply because no one cared what happened to him there are also further questions about whether his striking appearance is something that's happened over time or whether his face was purposefully sculpted to look like this after he had died as a warning to others number three a village in egypt older than the pharaohs we often think of the ancient egyptians as being the oldest advanced society in the world but people lived in the region far earlier than when the pyramid builders took control a team of egyptian and french archaeologists were investigating what they thought might be a lost egyptian town in the nile delta to the north of cario but instead uncovered a series of settlements that date back to the neolithic period and are at least seven thousand years old far earlier than when the first pharaoh took to the throne amongst the normal artifacts that are found in places like this such as fragments of pottery and stone tools they also unearth several unusual structures there were what appeared to be storage silos at one of the sites which contained the remnants of animals and plants could these have been the first waste management facilities or places that were used to store food that had since decomposed discoveries like this show that there's far more to learn about the history of egypt than just the time of the pharaohs and that the sands of the deserts could hold secrets that pre-date civilizations around the rest of the world number two alexander the great or a deadly curse the study of ancient egypt wouldn't be the same without the mention of a curse but while many artifacts that have supposedly been afflicted by dark magic don't stand up to tests there is one that most definitely has a strange aura around it it's a black granite sarcophagus that was found buried beneath alexandria and dating to somewhere between 305 and 30 bc it contained three skeletons and several sheets of gold surprisingly one of the skulls appeared to have been subjected to some form of brain surgery possibly to release pressure after swelling and the sarcophagus was filled with a mysterious red liquid because of the time it had been dated to it's been suggested that this was the final resting place of alexander the great and that he was buried with his family and there was great concern when it was first found that it was cursed two of those that were there when it opened since went on to die of strange illnesses and a few others also became very ill this could of course have been to do with the red liquid which some researchers believe is thousands of years old sewage water that has drained through number one finding the tomb of king tut's wife in 2008 there was a flurry of activity in the valley of the kings when 100 workers began frantically digging in an area not too far away from tutankhamun's burial place while authorities remained silent about what was happening it soon became clear that they believed they had located the place where the boy king's wife had been buried and with her could have been priceless artifacts when king tut died his wife anki sanaman remarried his successor king a and the location of this new tomb was also very close to where her second husband had been buried too she reigned as a beloved queen and was gifted treasures from across the kingdom and beyond if this truly is her resting place then it's quite possible that it could contain the most valuable trove of ancient artifacts that's ever been found as long as tomb robbers haven't already broken in so far no official announcement has been made about what was found there but that's not a surprise if it was as important a discovery as some believe perhaps she's already been found and authorities are keeping it a secret until they know for sure that everything has been secured have you got any suggestions on how to solve these mysteries and do you have any theories about what may still be waiting to be discovered make sure to let us know in the comments section also check out our other cool stuff showing up on the screen right now see you next time
