bound in crimson velvet and embroidered with golden thread it's been used for many centuries but it first appeared on record for the coronation of queen eleanor who married henry iii in 1236 and before that it was said to belong to edward the confessor one of the last anglo-saxon kings of england sometime between the year 1003 and 1066. as far as ancient royal swords go we'd say this one is pretty impressive tomoyuki yamashita sword this unbelievable sword has a dark history owned by the imperial japanese army general tomoyuki yamashita during the second world war this ominous sword was said to be brought into battle during the invasion of malaya in singapore earning yamashita the nickname the tiger of malaya by british soldiers the infamous blade was actually believed to be forged scottish independence a fierce warrior it said that all pieces of this legendary sword were actually made from the dried skin of his enemies yikes that's brutal historians even reckon that the sheer size of this sword means that william wallace could have stood as tall as six feet five inches towering over the average height for the 1200s which was around five feet seven inches for a man we wouldn't want to come face to face with this scary scottish champion especially when he's wielding a sword like that we bet the english ran in the opposite direction when they saw the real-life braveheart coming their way durandale belonging to the famous frankish knight known only as roland this incredible ancient sword was said to possess enormous powers such as cutting through stone with a single strike and even being indestructible now that's what you want from a sword the infamous duran dale fought in many bloody battles before finding its final resting place in the most peculiar of locations yep it was thrown by its owner and to the side of a stone monastery in a quiet town in the southwest of france it sat there poking out of the side of the rock face for over 900 years held only in place by a chain and the protection of local monks who carried on the legend of this mysterious sword tourists traveled from all over the world to check out this ancient sword that once belonged to a brave knight but in 2011 the town council decided it should be protected for historical reasons and removed it from the cliff forever we think it was kind of cool that a legendary sword was stuck in the stone for nine centuries nevertheless you can now check it out in the new home at a museum in paris we still think it would have been a more awesome thing to witness in its original resting place swordstone in tuscany from one sword stuck in the rocks to the real-life sword in the stone yep the legend of arthur sword excalibur was even said to be based on this real-life 12th century blade trapped in solid rock on the outskirts of siena in italy now located near tuscany this ancient sword once belonged to the wealthy knight saint guidotti before he plunged it into the stone even more disturbingly a pair of mummified hands that once tried to steal the sword are displayed next to the legendary artifact okay we know what you're thinking there's no way a real-life sword in the stone exists that's just an old folk tale well think again archaeologists ran tests at the historical site and the metal could be dated as far back as the 1100s plus radar analysis showed a cavity right beneath the stone which was thought to be the grave of the saints body even the creepy mummy hands are the real deal and could be traced to the 12th century long before the legends of arthur were first written amazing right [Music] known as the sword of the gathering clouds of heaven the legendary kusanagi sword is one of the three imperial regalia of japan alongside the yasakani no magatama a jewel that symbolizes generosity and the yata no kagami a mirror said to embody wisdom these three ancient artifacts are said to reside in a shroud of secrecy at a shrine in nagoya japan never to be seen by the eyes of the general public that's right this sword is so legendary and so sacred that no one is even allowed to see it and it's unclear what it might even look like the last time it was brought out of the shrine was in 2019 when emperor naruhito took the throne but even then it was totally covered and hidden from prying eyes what's the big secret according to shinto tradition this epic sword is said to carry super powers including the ability to control the wind no wonder if the kusanagi stays locked up in a temple for its own safety or for our own safety we wouldn't want this to end up in the wrong hands the tizona sword carried by the famous warrior rodrigo diaz de vivar also known as el seed this majestic sword was used to fight the moors in spain in japan there lived a legendary swordsmith by the name of sengo muramasa who crafted blades that were so deadly and so effective that they were deemed to be cursed and even banned by the imperial order yes as the old story goes muramasa was so obsessed with his art that he prayed to the gods that his blades would become great destroyers only to have his wish come true be careful what you wish for it said that a curse lingered over all the swords he had forged giving the blades a wicked will of their own and thirsting for bloodshed if they did not slay enough people in combat they would eventually turn on their owner to satisfy their need creepy right people found with these dangerous swords they were punished in the harshest ways possible and soon people began to hide them and even remove the famous muramasa markings from the blades however in recent years as many as 20 of these cursed swords have resurfaced traveling across the globe to exhibit in international museums uh-oh
