upon hearing the words Arctic and found in the same sentence you can probably visually gather that it's about someone gone missing and their body has been found thankfully we won't exactly go there but this video does tell the tale of what other incredible finds people have discovered in the Arctic if you want to vicariously live through other researchers and lucky visitors continue watching and you'll be baffled by the surprises others have found in the icy cold Arctic number one abandoned huts and 100 year old fruitcake if you're a history buff you may have heard of Ernest Shackleton and his Nimrod expedition this journey was set around the South Pole between 1907 and 1909 amidst the Arctic tundra and bone-chilling temperatures Ernest and his crew found refuge within the wooden hut he created the hut which had a cot shelving a stove and dreary drapery held the men as best as it could before they unfortunately visited for the last time in 1908 in the hut that they left there were enough supplies to be used during an emergency for the 15 men on his expedition even though the hut was entirely too small for that many men the compact size and body heat of the men helped quite a bit despite the temperature still being painfully low this base was incredibly important in the discovery of the Beardmore glacier and other areas around the south geographic pole as they were used at turn back stations when the weather became too treacherous Shackleton's Hut isn't the only thing that has been found frozen within the Windy chilling tundra of the Arctic the fruitcake wrapped in equally as old parchment paper was found in near-perfect condition in fact this fruitcake was deemed edible because of the crazy temperatures the Arctic reaches the team of researchers found that the frozen fruitcake may have belonged to a British explorer named Robert Falcon Scott Scott was in the Arctic during his Terra Nova expedition between 1910 and 1913 so how did they know that it belonged to the ballsy explorer they traced back the brand of fruitcake to the manufacturer Huntley & Palmer's which was his wide be known to be Robert Falcon Scott favorite his bass Hut was also surprisingly preserved for being 100 years without human touch medicinal supplies pantry items tools and more were chaotically organized throughout the hut utilizing as much wooden wall space as possible while abandoned Hut sound a tad sad you have to wonder if there 100 year old fruitcake was any good and if they were planning to eat it when celebrating findings are a successful trip with the eerie discovery of finding perfectly preserved food it makes you wonder what else is out in the Arctic that hasn't quite yet been discovered are there secrets that hide out in the cold that answer some of the world's darkest desires number two gigantic spiders you might be rolling your eyes thinking can't I ever escape spiders no no you can in fact the Antarctic sea is scattered with branch-like spiders that breathe unlike any other by absorbing oxygen through their creepy-crawly skin and pumping their blood with something other than their heart their intestines these spiders are the first in nature to be found with this kind of circulatory system number three ancient rainforests yes the frigidly cold Antarctic has remnants of fossilized forests littered throughout it's now frozen body at one point over 100 million years ago the ancient rainforests existed before the infamous blast of the greenhouse effect the polar ice caps hadn't quite melted and dinosaurs were wreaking havoc upon locals supple succulents in 1912 fossilized plants were found near the Beardmore glacier Robert Falcon Scott the famous fruitcake lover found these fossils and they may have led to his ultimate demise their weight was a bit too much for his body and gear to take on but the Magnificent finds weren't going to be left without recognition since then researchers have been finding fossilized plants from the ancient rainforest before the time of the frigidity still think global warming doesn't exist number 4 antarctic dinosaurs now that you know there were rainforests to support the life of monstrous Dino dwellers it's only natural to find the fossils of the fear-inducing reptilians in 1986 a seventy million year old dinosaur fossil was discovered on the Antarctic Peninsula on an expedition ran by Eduardo Oliveira this fossil ended up holding the keys to an entirely new species of herbivore deenus or this dinosaur which has now been found to be related to the ankylosaurus provided answers that they lived there before the continents shifted entirely into separate bodies of land number five one hundred year old whisky to go with your ancient fruitcake you may want to take a shot of an equally ancient whisky hidden in two boxes within the Antarctic sea the Scottish whiskey hadn't been removed until years later this was because the researchers were afraid of damaging the amazing box edged with keys to the mysteries of where it derived from after the whisky was carefully removed from the wooden crates the researchers had the contents defrosted but it took over two weeks to do so there were ten bottles that survived the decades of confinement and while we wouldn't recommend drinking such valuable whisky it'd be nice to find out the recipe number six one hundred year old photos now since there were so many explorers leading expeditions during the earlier 1900's there were cameras also tucked away in the pounds of gear to document findings thanks to the New Zealand Antarctic Heritage Trust a hired researcher discovered an entire box filled to the brim with the negatives of photographs thanks to a massive block of ice they were perfectly preserved and gently restored it speculated that they were left behind when Captain Scott's ship floated away in a massive Blizzard this expedition was a part of Ernest Shackleton's 1914 to 1917 trip with his Rossi party after taking hours upon hours to defrost and separate the cellulose nitrate negatives you can now view all of the black-and-white photos number seven oldest Antarctic sea monster in 2011 fossils of an ancient dinosaur were found in the Antarctic where a seabed once laid it was once believed that dinosaurs and prehistoric sea monsters hadn't been in that area until 15 million years later than the date of the 85 million year old dinosaur parts of the dinosaur's vertebrae flippers and head gave a rough estimate that the dinosaur was between 20 and 23 feet a researcher spoke with the National Geographic stating if the Loch Ness monster is real this is the best representation of it number eight life harvesting caves deep in the Antarctic there's an intricate cave system that may Harbor unique life the caves are within warm pockets that surround the volcanic ice caves because of this a very diverse range of animal life and plant life may surround even though there is ice everywhere and surrounding the caves within the temperature can be as high as 68 degrees Fahrenheit most of the caves don't have much light shining through but there are pockets where the Sun is able to peek and greet the pockets of warmth because of the unique temperatures and environment researchers are still doing an immense amount of research about possible life-forms existing in the caves number nine ice buried pyramid if you thought pyramids were only in the hot deserts of Egypt you will be pleasantly surprised to find that in November 2016 the internet went crazy over a pyramid found deep in the Antarctic however it was all thanks to an expedition that took place between 1910 to 1913 originally dubbed the pyramid this not so unique name is still used to this day on geological surveys the Ellsworth Mountains are home to the peak of this pyramid as well as a bunch of other non pyramid like rock formations if people believe that this pyramid is proof that a civilization once existed here but were too fragile to the cold and governments are trying to hide this information number ten elongated skulls and since we touch briefly on a conspiracy theory of the Antarctic we think it's only natural to follow up with the discovery of elongated skulls in the Antarctic one researcher Brien Foerster believes that these discoveries tie aliens to Planet Earth the skulls were discovered by Julio Telo in 1928 and scientists state that the DNA had mutations that weren't known to any man animal or primate this suggests that this is an entirely new type of human species but basically an alien these would be very distant to your average Neanderthal or homo sapien number 11 life under ice russian researchers have drilled down a hole and retrieved a clean core of ice to research more about its Antarctic past taken from Lake Vostok this ice core has evidence of life as old as 20 million years ago the lake is underneath a sheet of ice that's as thick as two miles at first the researchers were nervous that drilling could mean dark days ahead for the water below the possible contamination ruining any future studying that could occur within the coming years researchers hope to find more answers about possible life-forms on earth that we don't quite know about yet number 12 graveyard of penguin mummies that title sounds bleak and cute all at the same time the graveyard of penguin mummies held hundreds upon hundreds of the cute waddling creatures unfortunately this shows signs of a mass wipeout due to the extreme environment a study was conducted that overlooked the last 1,000 years in the area leading scientists to believe that it was just too cold for them to survive known as the adlai penguin these are native to the continent and there are more than 4.5 million of them still roaming around in the frigid temperatures thankfully the mass wipe out didn't cause an extinction number thirteen penguin colony and speaking of penguins scientists recently found an entire secret kingdom of penguins in Antarctica now they aren't a secret species as these penguins were found to be the infamous native adlai penguins but there were more than 1.5 million of them in hiding the massive Kingdom was found on a remote archipelago attached to the danger islands just over a year ago researchers were able to look over this kingdom further with the help of NASA's orbiting landsat satellites number 14 first yeti crab discovery hydrothermal vents are the sole reason why researchers were able to discover the first yeti crab in the Antarctic within the East Scotia Ridge in the Southern Ocean multiple Yeti crabs of both male and female types were found known famously for their Bristol covered bodies they perfectly match their surroundings because of the bristles the crabs look like they're covered in fur which is rightful for their location in Antarctica the reason why they haven't been found sooner there is because of the warm areas within the southern ocean that harbored tons of hydrothermal vent systems since the environment posed a do-or-die scenario to the crabs evolution caused them to adapt accordingly their bristle like bodies rely on bacteria for them to get their nutrition without this evolutionary factor they wouldn't be able to exist in the antarctic number 15 the loneliest ATM in the world you might be thinking to yourself who in the world needs to buy something we're barely anything exists located at the McMurdo Station in Antarctica this ATM was installed by the famous Wells Fargo corporation in 1998 even though penguins vastly overrun humans in this area there are roughly 250 to 1000 people on the continent at any given time depending on the season of course money is still a required currency it's not everyone is interested in bartering with visitors there you have it some of the craziest finds in one of the most remote areas that humans visit what else have you heard about Antarctica finding are there any more conspiracy theories about the area that we didn't mention sound off in the comments below and make sure to hit that Bell to get notified when we have another video live
