hands up if you don't enjoy a good mystery we know that none of you just raised your hands because if you didn't enjoy mysteries you wouldn't be watching this video we're fortunate enough to live in a world that's full of wonders and mysteries both ancient and modern and some of them keep secrets that can't be explained no matter how hard scientists and experts try join us for a tour of some of the most mysterious places on earth [Music] clinton road in new jersey usa looks like every other american two-lane highway except that it isn't between ghost sightings body disposals alleged druidic practices and tales of witchcraft this is said to be the most haunted road in the country some people even believe that it's cursed the 10-mile path takes you past very few houses the scenery is mostly trees in the eerie silence of clinton reservoir one of the few buildings of note is the old clinton ironworks which immediately stands out because of its pyramid shape the ironworks closed down in the 1850s but walk inside it today and you'll find satanic messages written on the walls in latin further along is the burnt out shell of cross castle mansion which has also been decorated by similar markings and is said to be haunted by ghosts that will leave bruises on your body if you walk through the ruins in 1983 a human body was recovered from the side of the road and was found to have ice crystals in its blood close to the heart the ghost of a boy who drowned after falling from the rhodes bridge is said to return any coins you throw from it we're not saying any one of these stories is definitely true but there's definitely something very odd about the road you've probably heard of the loch ness monster in scotland but how many of you knew that there's an american equivalent living in lake champlain the creature who has been nicknamed champi has allegedly been sighted more than 300 times over the years in the 125 mile long body of water that runs between new york and vermont and some of those sightings have come with photographs it's said that french cartographer and quebec founder samuel de champlain was the first to spot the monster in 1609 although what he meant by his description of a 20-foot long fish with a head like a horse is debated the boat captain who was quoted in the 1819 plattsburgh republican was far more certain about what he'd seen when he described a 190-foot long beast that had got within 200 yards of his vessel on the water even sheriff nathan h mooney claimed to have seen the creature with his own eyes in 1883 there are even some short videos that are said to have captured champ in motion although their authenticity is hotly contested [Music] visit the town of lei in ladakh india and you'll find a clearly signposted road that's claimed by the locals to have magical properties they call it magnetic hill and they claim that the earth's magnetic force is so strong here that it will drag your car uphill if you turn off the engine and leave it in neutral most people arrive as skeptics but when they shut off their engines and their vehicles suddenly start drifting up the hill they quickly become believers scientists have a straightforward explanation for what's going on here they say that the gentle slope of the road combined with the hills around it to create an optical illusion and trick your mind into believing a road that rolls slightly downhill actually rises slightly uphill even when you've been told it's an optical illusion though it's impossible to persuade your eyes to see it the scientific explanation hasn't put off the thousands of visitors who come here every year nor the local people who claim that the area has healing qualities everything about hathor temple and dhandara egypt is remarkable it's one of the most complete unspoiled and detailed of all the ancient egyptian temples you'll find in the country and it's said that cleopatra herself had a hand in its design and spent time inside it the complex dedicated to the egyptian god of love and fertility contains 12 intricately decorated crypts a pair of funnel crypts devoted to osiris and incredibly brightly colored wall decorations it's astonishing to think that these are the original colors of the temple painted 2000 years ago perhaps the only reason they've survived this well is that they were once protected by layers of soot created by bedouins who once took refuge inside the temple's walls pay close enough attention to these walls though and you'll eventually see the infamous dendera light the relief almost hidden away in a less important part of the temple appears to depict an ancient egyptian figure holding an enormous light bulb complete with a power connection to some it's evidence that the egyptians were even more advanced than we already believed them to be scientists insist that it can't be a light bulb but can't offer a better explanation the more you read about the mountains of untersberg the more bizarre the stories and conspiracy theories get this large group of mountains is positioned right on the border between germany and austria and is said to contain the sleeping form of charles the great who will one day wake up and seize control of the world that's one of the less eyebrow-raising stories according to myths and legends he's not alone inside the mountain it also contains dwarfs monsters and mischievous spirits people who have walked across the tops of the mountains have reported losing time finding that several hours have passed in the space of a few moments others have reported suddenly being transported from one position on the mountains to another crossing impossible distances in no time at all hunter michael holzerger disappeared in the mountains in 1738 and reappeared a year later apparently unable to account for where he'd been in 1858 it's said that a wedding procession that had passed through the mountains finally arrived at the church they'd set off for 100 years late some of these stories were obviously made up but could there be any truth to some of them all churches are regarded as holy places and a holy place is an excellent location for a miracle to happen most reported miracles are easy to disprove however with the trees of saint theodora's chapel in arcadia greece scientists are having a little more difficulty no less than 17 oak trees grow from the walls and rooftops of this tiny ramshackle stone church and they're growing without any roots the laws of physics say that the weight of the trees should tear the 11th century church apart but it somehow manages to bear the burden and remain standing the local explanation of how the church came to be is rather wonderful allegedly theodora was an 11th century female warrior who disguised herself as a man to join her town's defense force against bandits and barbarians she was fatally wounded in battle and with her last words asked god to turn her body into a church with her hair becoming a forest of trees and her blood becoming the water that would feed them science can't explain what's going on here so maybe she got her wish after all india and sri lanka are connected by culture religion and the building blocks of their languages it appears to be the case that they were also once connected by land some scientists insist that this chain of rocky outcrops and islands that exists between india and sri lanka is nothing more than an accident of geology to many people though including several scientists this is adam's bridge also known as rama c2 and it was once a physical connection between the two countries that could be walked across some hindu traditions state that rama an avatar of vishnu built the bridge in ancient times there are also some medieval texts that speak of a pathway that existed across the sea in this area which makes it even harder to deny that this is a genuine archaeological artifact one theory is that the bridge was above sea level until it was damaged in a cyclone as recently as 1480 after which it sank and disappeared into legend that doesn't solve the mystery of who built it when and how we may never be able to answer those questions [Music] a little earlier on we looked at the magnetic hill in india which scientists put down to a simple optical illusion the same explanation is also used to explain the so-called oregon vortex of gold hill oregon usa the stories began in the early 20th century when a recently built office belonging to a mining company inexplicably slid down a hillside not long after it was built and came to rest at a strange angle nowadays that office belongs to the cooper family who have customized and adapted it to demonstrate what they say are the area's peculiar magnetic properties tricks they show off to visitors include balls rolling uphill broomsticks that can stand upright without any means of support and rooms that seem to shrink as you walk through them to add a little spice to the story they say that native americans refuse to go near the house or allow their horses to get too close to it scientists and local cynics say that the building was deliberately built to confuse the senses and that everything that happens inside it is a trick of perspective but where's the fun in that fairy glenn on the scottish isle of skye looks like something out of a fairy tale it's a picture postcard perfect area of rolling green hills and colorful flowers marked only by a mysterious stone circle it has the appearance of being too perfect to have been created by chance and so legends say that it's the work of magical fairies some of whom still hide within the cracks and crevices of the land the tales of the fairies are almost certainly fanciful but there might be something to be said for castle ewin the feature gets its name because it looks so much like an ancient ruin and yet there are some who say it's nothing more than a natural formation was this a castle in ancient times if it was did the people who lived there build the strange stone circle and its neighboring rock spiral tourists sometimes make their own rock formations here during their visits a practice that's frowned upon by the locals but it's clear that more intensive labor went into the rock spiral it almost seems like the whole history of this area is a forgotten secret with its sudden fogs twisted trees and numerous reports of ufo sightings it's no wonder that hoya baiku forest in romania is known as the country's bermuda triangle you only have to look at the forest once to get the impression that not everybody who walks into it comes out the other side no force of nature can explain what's happened to the trees in the forest which twist around as far as 180 degrees in some places and take on unnatural shapes nists and fogs can appear out of nowhere and disappear just as quickly and when they do the locals say that they take people with them in the neighboring town of cluj napoca there's a commonly believed legend about a little girl who vanished in a mist in the forest and then reappeared five years later she didn't appear to have aged and she had no idea where she'd been shepherds and whole flocks of sheep are also said to have been lost on walks through the forest and strange lights have been seen both around and above the trees late at night it's an unsettling otherworldly feeling place everything you think you know about physics tells you that the kumakivi balancing rock in rukulati finland shouldn't exist the stone on the bottom is significantly larger than the rock on top and the entire weight of the larger rock is perched on a perilously thin point of contact with the one below it the whole thing ought to fall over and yet it doesn't the rocks have been in this position since ancient times and according to local legends they were left in their current position by a bored race of giants who used to play with rocks and boulders to pass the time scientists think that they have a better if more mundane explanation they say that this part of finland was once covered in vast glaciers and it was glaciers that deposited the rocks here over time the glaciers receded weathering the rocks on as they went that left these two rocks arranged in this unlikely shape around 8 000 years ago while that might explain where the rocks came from it doesn't explain why the upper rock doesn't just topple over while we're on the topic of strange rock shapes we should talk about the so-called devil's column in milan italy the ancient rock column is at odds with everything around it predating the saint ambrose church and the piazza it stands in it's thought that it was built by the ancient romans of the second century although that's a theory rather than a proven fact in the absence of facts a legend has materialized the story says that saint ambrose was out walking in the gardens of the basilica when satan appeared to him attempting to tempt him away from the church in response ambrose who was a bit of an action man as far as saints go physically attacked the devil and rammed him horns first into the column creating the two holes that can still be seen there today as soon as he freed himself the devil fled from the area in terror it's even said that if you get close enough to the holes you can still smell the sulfur left behind by the horns of the beast when he was impaled subscribe to the channel and turn on notifications and you will be the first to know when a new video comes out thank
