understanding an artifact isn't as easy as looking at it if the artifact is unusual it'll need to be studied researched and carefully assessed before any conclusions can be drawn even then it's possible to get things wrong and in some cases you might find yourself short of answers even when you've done all the research that's what this video is about artifacts that have found ways of keeping their secrets no matter how much they're studied between the 1920s and the 1960s archaeologists discovered a series of mysterious ancient figurines in Siberia while they were never sure what their purpose was they all agreed that they represented idealized versions of the female form because of that they were nicknamed the Venus figurines in 2016 it turned out that we've been incorrectly assuming their gender a 2016 study of the figures which are said to be 20,000 years old concluded that they're not actually all adult women at all some of them are men or children and all of them are wearing clothes the figurines were originally found close to the angara river not far from Lake Bal they were considered to be the most important ancient works of art in the region they still hold that status but we've apparently been misunderstanding them for close to 100 years they're probably representations of everyday Siberians and might even be self-portraits maybe in another 100 years time we might actually finally Solve the Riddle of why they were made in the first place what do you see when you look at these mysterious egg-shaped objects are they just regular Boulders or are they meteorites might they be dinosaur eggs to answer those questions we have to think about where they came from there are 10 of the the stones known as Jurassic pearls all of which are perfectly smooth and were found together in the cuski coal mine in Siberia aside from all having an almost uniform shape which suggests a degree of human engineering they've been known to change color when it rains the official scientific explanation is that they're nothing more than concretions cemented around a nucleus that might be nothing more than a humble shell tooth or even a leaf the fact they change color when they're exposed to rainfall has been put down to the large quantity of iron oxide in their composition not everyone is satisfied with that explanation though there are some who feel that they're relics of a long forgotten Siberian civilization that's not to say that concretions don't exist but they don't often create shapes as Flawless as this is there more to them that we don't know we have another Siberian Wonder to show you before we move on from the region it's this stunning Emerald which was discovered there during the 1980s and then spent the next 35 years in a fish tank belonging to the geologist who found it is it really an emerald though it's certainly Green in these pictures but depending on how the light hits it it can also appear as blue or orange geologist Lydia kinova eventually asked scientists to test her fish tank Rock in 2016 and was surprised to find out that it couldn't be identified the experts weren't totally convinced it's an emerald but nor could they say with any certainty what it might be that raises the possibility that it has an extraterrestrial origin and could have been brought to Earth by the tunguska medor that said to have landed in the area in 1908 the glass-like stone is composed of nickel copper zinc Cobalt titanium and chrome that indicates it might be a techtite a material formed in the molten debris of asteroid impacts whatever it is it's now out of the fish tank and on display in a museum one of the most remarkable treasure discoveries in British history happened in 1912 when a fabulous collection of 500 pieces of Stewart and Elizabeth and era jewelry were found buried below the cellar of a house in the cheapside district of London now known as The cheapside Horde it's thought that the items have been underground since at least 1666 perhaps trapped there by construction work that happened in the aftermath of the Great Fire of London that year the most remarkable individual piece in the whole collection is the emerald dial a Priceless watch set into one single emerald crystal the watch is without parallel no time piece like this has ever been found before or since not just in Britain but anywhere in the world it would have taken the skills of a master crafts person to create this ornamental watch and it wouldn't have been cheap it's highly likely that it was created as a bespoke piece for an aristocrat and perhaps even a member of the Royal Family the original owner of The cheapside Horde has never been identified but they left behind an incredible collection for us to enjoy about 7,000 years ago it became customary in ancient China to place large intricately carved Stone discs made from Jade on the bodies of deceased Aristocrats at the time of their burial nobody knows why the ancient Chinese did this there are dozens of materials that disc could be made from as a way to honor the dead Jade is one of the most difficult that these ancient Craftsmen could possibly have chosen to work with and yet they did it must have had some kind of special significance which is lost on us the discs are properly known as by discs and are a product of the Neolithic era leango culture they've been found in the tombs of almost every noble or senior member of both the leango and Hong Shang cultures that archaeologists have been able to break into where they're usually placed on the chest of the deceased most of them bear inscriptions that make repeated references to the sky the Crafts People of this era wouldn't have had any metal tools at their disposal so they must have made the discs through polishing and brazing a process that would have taken several weeks per disc the Smithsonian Institute currently holds almost 200 of the discs but hasn't yet offered any explanation of their purpose there are several inscriptions tablets carvings and other Engravings that people point to as being the oldest writing in the world it's almost impossible to say where writing truly began but it might be the so-called danu Valley Civilization script to accept that as a fact though we must accept that the danu valley civilization script is actually a form of writing and that's far from clear the civilization in question lived in the Balkans over 7,500 years ago and was relatively Advanced making great breakthroughs in the fields of weaving spinning leather processing and most importantly of all inventing the wheel they also had a habit of carving similar looking symbols on many of their artifacts which may or may not be a form of written language there are enough characters for it to be a language and it follows some of the conventions of written communication but thus far it's proved to be impossible to decipher many experts have tried but all have failed until someone finally cracks the code the debate will continue and the question will remain unresolved that's assuming of course that it's even possible to translate the script at all in England's Peak District National Park not far from the city of Manchester there's a stone monument known as The gom's Edge monolith historians and archaeologists have argued about its meaning and significance for decades but in 2012 they believe they might have found an answer this mosque covered 4,000-year-old monolith might be a very early type of calendar the finding came after researchers dug up an area around the tooth shaped Stone and found a collection of smaller Stones deliberately buried around its base propping it up at an angle of precisely 60° and ensuring that it points due south the placement of the stones ruled out any possibility that the monolith arrived in this position by accident and destroyed the theory that it might be a glacial deposit using a digital reconstruction of the stars as they would have appeared 2,000 years ago researchers discovered that the broadest face of the stone would have been in permanent Shadow during winter but fully illuminated during the middle of summer that feature would have helped the people living around it to Mark the passing of the seasons and possibly plan ritual events or harvests around it it might not tell you the time or date but it could at least tell you the right week or month archaeologists in Jordan have been working at the site of a stone AG Village known as karasin since 4 and during that time they've Unearthed over 100 similar looking artifacts made of Flint initially the experts believe the artifacts were stone tools but in 2020 they changed their minds stone tools would show signs of wear and tear from use these Flint objects have none the researchers are now working on the theory that they're figurines of people and might have been used during funeral rituals that would be a remarkable development considering the people people of Carin lived and died more than 10,000 years ago it's already known that this was a relatively sophisticated settlement for the Stone Age most of the world's people were hunter gatherers back then but at carason people built houses settled permanently and farmed the land as the Flint figurines have only ever been found in Graves they're almost certainly funeral related but the question of whether there many statues of the people buried with them cannot yet be answered about 5,000 years ago on the Danish island of bornholm people started engraving small stones with spiderwebs and Sunburst patterns and burning them breaking them in half and burying them we call these artifacts sunstones but that's only a name based on their decorations we have no idea what they were used for or why they were handled in such a way more than 300 such artifacts were discovered on the island during an archaeological survey in 2017 most of which are small enough to fit inside a matchbox all the stones show telltale signs of wear and tear that indicate they were probably carried around in people's pockets the archaeologists can agree on their purpose some believe they were used in ferary rights hence the breaking in the burial whereas others have speculated they might have been a very early form of currency the sun patterns on many of them are probably significant in the context of the island though bornholm is known as Sunshine Island but the nickname has stood for so long that nobody remembers where it came from these Stones would surely provide a few Clues if we could interpret them correctly whenever a meteor fragment Falls to Earth geologists and scientists get an opportunity to find out more about outer space one of the most fascinating things that's fallen on our planet in the past decade is the Sri Lanka meteor that landed in 2012 burning a blazing green trail through the sky on its way to the surface two separate groups of scientists have studied the meteorite and made the same astonishing claim the meteor contains the fossils of algae like life forms and therefore confirms the existence of life beyond our planet in fact the precise description used in one of the studies includes the phrase undeniably organic given the gravity of the claim it's probably unsurprising that other scientists disagree some opponents of the studies even say that the objects that were studied aren't pieces of the meteorite at all but instead were rocks that were already on Earth in the same vicinity that the meteorite fell on it's unlikely that the two opposing sides of this debate will ever find any common ground but to those who look to the stars and wonder whether we're alone this might be the first definite indication that we're not for Generation after generation the heirloom seal of the realm was the most important symbol in ancient China passed down from Emperor to Emperor as one of the Sacred artifacts associated with their power it was carved out of the heshi B Jade stone in the year 221 bcee for Ken Xiang the first emperor of China as a unified Nation it survived for over 1,000 years until it vanished at some point during the 10th Century historians can agree on whether the year of its disappearance was 907 or 960 but it was never seen again after that Century despite several archaeologists claiming to have found it the loss must have been devastating to the Chinese rulers of the time as by that point the seal had survived the Shen Wii and Xin Sue and Tang dynasties as well as the 16 kingdoms period one popular theory is that it was destroyed when the last of the Tang Emperors dramatically ended his Reign through emulating himself but the historical evidence of that is far from conclusive 25 Imperial seals were created to replace it thus ensuring that the loss of one single seal would never be so disastrous again but the final fate of the heirloom seal of the realm will probably never be [Music] known it's been nearly 20 years since a farmer found our next artifact while tending his field in montoro Spain an archaeologist still can agree about whether it's a genuine Discovery or an elaborate hoax if taken at face value it might represent the oldest script in Iberia now known as the Stella of montoro the stone slab dates back 2900 years to the Iron Age and is covered in symbols many of which belong to different early languages there are characters on the stone that can be found found in contemporary Greek Spanish Arabian and canite as well as Iberian all of those cultures existed in the area at the time the rock is thought to have been carved but that doesn't explain why pieces of every language would appear on the same artifact because of the muddled characters translating the stone has thus far proven to be impossible one possibility is that the carvings are nothing more than Ancient Graffiti added a word or two at a time by people from different backgrounds possibly conscripts to the Roman army another is that the carvings were made by illiterate people copying symbols they saw on other carvings that they didn't understand the carvings are definitely ancient so the artifact as a whole is in a hoax but it's difficult to see how we'll ever find out whether it was intended to be read as a coherent message subscribe to the channel and turn
