from the thrift store to the bottom of your garden treasure discoveries can happen anywhere valuable artifacts sometimes have a habit of getting lost which makes it all the more exciting when they're discovered again we know some incredible treasure discovery stories from all over the world and we're very happy to be able to share them with all of you in this video let's get going coins are among the most common discoveries made by archaeologists and amateur treasure hunters but most coins are of minimal interest or value even if they're old there are exceptions to that rule though like the amazing discovery that was made in the turkish archaeological site of izanoi in january 2021 there archaeologists discovered more than 600 ancient silver roman coins dating back to the time of emperor augustus 2 000 years ago experts believe the coins were minted in the greek city of pergamon and were probably brought into turkey by a soldier of high rank someone went to a great deal of trouble to hide these coins they were secreted inside a hug which itself was hidden behind terracotta plates they may never have been found at all if their burial spot hadn't been accidentally disturbed by the development of a new waterway archaeologists are hopeful that there will be other significant discoveries made at the site which has been compared to the famous ancient turkish city of ephesus in the near future quite why the coins were buried and then forgotten in this manner is a mystery we all remember the scene in the 1997 movie titanic where the band keeps playing on the stricken ship's deck while everyone else scrambles for the lifeboats the scene is based on a true story there were musicians on the titanic who continued playing until the bitter end and in 2013 one of their violins was sold at auction for 1.7 million dollars after being found in an attic the violin belonged to english musician wallace hartley who went down with the ship in april 1912. his violin was still strapped to him when his body was recovered from the water two weeks later from there the musical instrument was sent to his sister in england who held onto it until 1939 when she donated it to the salvation army nobody knows the precise details of its journey over the next 70 years but it eventually ended up in the attic of a house that was once owned by a music teacher where it was found by her son in 2006 from there it took another seven years to verify that it's a genuine titanic artifact before it could be put up for sale the seller was expecting to make around one hundred thousand dollars they got a pleasant surprise when the bidding went far higher than that the roman empire spread so far and wide across the world that roman artifacts can be found everywhere but not all of them are equal fewer roman treasure discoveries are more remarkable than the hildesheim treasure which was discovered in hildesheim germany in late 1868. even now it's still the largest roman silver collection ever discovered outside the traditional imperial frontiers of the empire rather than being made up of coins or weapons which account for most roman treasure discoveries the hildesheim treasure is a set of just under 70 ornate dining items including plates cups and cutlery experts believe that the collection represents one single table service set and think it might have belonged to roman commander publius quincilius varus who served the empire 2000 years ago there's an outside chance that it might be a collection of looted war spoils rather than a table service but more historians believe the former theory than the latter the most outstanding piece in the collection is the minerva bull which features a stunning carving of the goddess sitting on her rock throne clutching her cane and shield copies of the collection exist in several museums but the originals can be found at the altus museum in berlin perhaps the best treasure discoveries are those that prove ancient myths and legends to be true for generations chinese children were told stories of zhang zhianchang also known as yellow tiger the brave leader of a 17th century peasant uprising the stories always said that the yellow tiger's treasures were lost at the bottom of a river somewhere very few people thought there was any truth to the tales until the treasure was found in march 2017 when over ten thousand gold and silver artifacts were found at the bottom of the minjiang river in sichuan's province all of which date back to the days of the ming dynasty this finally confirms that the yellow tigers boats were sunk by ming dynasty soldiers as he tried to flee south in 1646 aside from coins ingots and jewelry archaeologists have also recovered swords weapons and spears from the river even after so much time underwater the marks of fine craftsmanship can still be seen on the precious artifacts the loss was so significant that it marked the end of zhang jianchang's uprising but the discovery means he'll never be forgotten [Music] another legendary treasure was discovered on bulgaria's black sea coast in august 2018 when more than one thousand gold and silver artifacts were found inside a clay pot in caliacra fortress it's thought that this is a collection of loot built up over time by a tartar leader who was himself eventually defeated by the ottomans somewhere around the beginning of the 15th century the fortress has long been an area of archaeological interest as it's been held and fought over since the days of the ancient thracians 2 400 years ago this particular set of treasures probably comes from the final invasion of the balkans by the tatars it contains more than 900 gold and silver coins two gold rings 11 gold earrings a set of gold buckles 30 silver and bronze buttons and a few precious stones most of the coins are ottoman in origin but there are a few from the second bulgarian empire the pot appears to have been hidden deliberately at the end of the 14th century to protect it from ottoman advances it turned out to be so well hidden that it took archaeologists a further 500 years to find it [Music] in 1935 a local bank decided it wanted to build a new office at the address of 68 main street in kosice slovakia as they dug out the foundations of their new office they came across a collection of 3 000 gold coins three gold medals and a renaissance era gold chain the collection is now known as the gold treasure of kosucha and is considered to be among the largest and most valuable 16th century treasure collections in the world the entire collection was discovered inside a strange copper vessel shaped like a loaf of bread inside which it was split into two bowls the vessel is decorated with engravings that depict a hunting scene which may have been a way of throwing observers off the scene of what was hiding within it we don't know what the medals were awarded for but they come from different eras the first two were made during the 1520s and depict king ludovic ii whereas the third was minted in 1541 and bears the face of king ferdinand the first of hungary and bohemia the coins are a wide and varied collection drawn from all over europe but the chain is the standout piece it's over six feet long and made of solid gold like so many other ancient treasures it seems the kosich gold treasure was hidden for safe keeping and then forgotten about over time our next treasure find is another coin discovery but it's different from the ones we've seen so far in this video because it was found by two teenage boys volunteering their time at an archaeological dig site in central israel what they found in august 2020 was a collection of 24 karat gold coins dating back over 1 100 years to a time when this part of the world was ruled by the abbasid caliphate all 425 coins in the collection were hidden inside a clay vessel on the outskirts of the city of yavna experts have already hailed it as the greatest collection of early 9th century coins ever found in the country based on the weight of the gold alone the collection is worth over fifty thousand dollars when you factor in their historical significance though their true value would likely be far higher if anyone were ever to choose to sell them back at the time they were minted these coins would have been enough to pay for a large house in the most prestigious part of egypt's capital city whoever stashed them away in yavna went to a lot of trouble to keep them hidden and even drove a nail through the pot to hold them in place but for whatever reason they never came back for them their loss is now history's gain [Music] you might think that you can get all the information you need about the golden rhinoceros of mapungumbwe from its name after all it's a rhino it's golden and it comes from the ancient kingdom of mapun gubwe there's more to the artifact than just its name though including the fact that it's not as golden as it might appear to be the artifact which was probably created around one thousand years ago and was discovered in ma pongubway national park in 1932 is actually a wooden carving coated in thin layers of gold sheeting the archaeologists who recovered it noted that it was found inside what they perceived to be a royal grave on a hillside despite being small enough to fit in the palm of your hand the rhino has a lot to say about the history of south africa the presence of the object and the royal looking grave suggests the presence of an independent hilltop settlement in the area during the 11th century a settlement that's unknown to history if that theory is correct and the person the artifact was buried with was a king or a ruler it would represent the earliest known example of a class-based society existing in the southern part of africa we don't have enough evidence to say that for sure yet but it's an intriguing idea when archaeologists discovered our next set of valuable artifacts at the ancient church of tumna in county roscommon ireland in 1834 they didn't know what to make of it the local press was also more than a little confused and reported that the archaeologists had found a collection of golden potatoes looking at the objects it's easy to see why in fact we still can't think of a better way of describing them the true purpose of the artifacts has never been determined experts have been able to conclude that they're around 3000 years old and date back to the late bronze age and that the holes drilled at each end are probably there to allow them to be threaded but they'd surely be too heavy to be worn as a necklace this unusual form of sheet gold gilding is unique and hasn't been recorded before or since anywhere in ireland or the neighboring united kingdom whoever owned or possibly wore these beads must surely have been an elevated social standing perhaps they belonged to a druid priest or a local king or chieftain we might never know their story but that doesn't mean we can't appreciate their beauty in 2018 a man was out walking with his dog in the orlika mountains close to costelec hornke in czechia when the dog ran off seemingly distracted by something in the undergrowth when the owner caught up to his dog he found that it had dug up a bronze sickle that was enough to persuade the owner to join his pet in the digging exercise and by the time they were done they'd unearthed a further 12 sickles seven bracelets three axes and two spears he quickly headed to the orlika mountains museum in nearby richnov and showed his newly found collection off to the experts who were able to tell him that he'd stumbled across a treasure collection that's more than three thousand years old they're the only artifacts from this era to be found in the region since 1953 and their value shouldn't be underestimated the best guess of the archaeologists at the museum is that they were buried either as a tribute or a sacrifice at the sight of a fallen warrior although confirming that would necessitate the discovery of a grave close to the site so far that hasn't happened [Music] the idea of unknowingly owning a lost painting by a pre-renaissance master and thinking so little of it that you hang it in your kitchen above a stove is so laughable that it could be part of a sitcom and yet it happened in real life in 2019 this stunning piece known as christ mocked and painted by simabu in 1280 was found in the home of a 90 year old woman during a house clearance at her apartment in paris france the painting had hung on her wall for as long as her family could remember but they'd always assumed it was a cheap reproduction religious piece and nothing more had an eagle-eyed member of the house clearance team not spotted it and thought it worth bringing to the attention of an art expert it would probably have ended up in the trash nobody knows how it came to be in the woman's house but it's now one of only 11 pieces by simabu known to exist in the world for that reason it's been given a value of at least 6 million [Music] it's often said that extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence for that reason you'd want to see some concrete proof if someone told you that a sword once owned by napoleon was coming to auction and you had a chance to buy it and take it home in this case though there was no shortage of evidence that explains why the price had reached 6.4 million dollars by the time the hammer came down the sword was sold in fontainebleau france in 2007 at an auction house across the road from one of the legendary leader's imperial castles the weapon had remained in his family for more than 200 years before they eventually decided to part with it aside from being associated with such a famous historical figure the sword is unique because of its curved blade this was an uncommon feature in europe but had been requested by napoleon at the time of the sword's manufacture because he'd been impressed by the effectiveness of the curved blades he'd seen during his time in egypt such is the significance of the weapon to the french nation that one of the conditions of the sale states that it must be exhibited somewhere in france for six months of every year [Music] subscribe to the channel and turn on notifications and you will be the first to know when a new video comes out thank you for watching and see you soon
