for all the money we part with to acquire them and the importance we attach to them while we own them human beings have a strange habit of leaving vehicles behind it doesn't matter if they were designed for the road for the air for water or to run on tracks they all get left behind the same way there are amazing abandoned vehicles scattered all over the world and we've packed this video full of some of the best and most interesting examples the space shuttle enterprise has had a strange life it never made it into outer space but it has flown above the skies of new york riding on the back of a 747 jumbo jet and traveled down the hudson river on a reinforced barge those two trips were both part of its final journey after which it settled at its permanent home at the intrepid sea air and space museum in new york prior to that it had been on display at the smithsonian institute museum the enterprise named for the starship in the popular television show star trek was created as a prototype for the space shuttle in 1976 but was never flown outside the earth's atmosphere which seems to defeat the purpose of building a prototype space shuttle nasa used it as a promotional aid during the early 1980s before putting it back to work as a ground test vehicle in 1984 and formally retiring it in 1985. we suppose that it's not technically abandoned if it's a museum piece but as a piece of equipment it was never used to its true potential one of the most common ways for abandoned cars to be rediscovered is as barn finds vehicles that were parked in garages or barns decades ago and then forgotten about this ultra rare 1953 months jet project car is an excellent example of a barn find and turned up for sale on the internet in 2016. only 400 of these cars were ever produced and it's thought that fewer than 50 have survived to this day designed by frank curtis and earl montz these sleek curved aerodynamic cars were capable of hitting 112 miles per hour when pushed to their maximum speed that might not be remarkable now but for 1953 that was almost unheard of unfortunately this particular example doesn't appear to have been well cared for the lights suggest that it might have been adapted for use on a racetrack at some point in the past and most of the parts have been dragged out and piled into the space where the seats should be it'd be a massive restoration project for anyone to take on but if one could fully be restored it might be worth a hundred thousand dollars or more sometimes the abandonment of vehicles has nothing to do with negligence instead it's a necessary step to take for everybody's safety that's the reason behind the abandonment of a huge number of helicopters tanks cars and emergency vehicles on open land at rasorva kiev obelisk ukraine all of them were used in the cleanup operation that followed the chernobyl nuclear disaster in april 1986 during which they became contaminated by radiation and had to be stored far out of the way of human beings the site is around 15 miles south of the former power plant but inside the exclusion zone where possible the vehicles that were used in the cleanup operation were buried but with so many vehicles to dispose of that wasn't always possible those that aren't underground stand lined up in rows in places like this but the resource side is the largest and arguably the most eerie of them all putting a cost on all of the vehicles that stand here in silence isn't easy but it's safe to assume that they represent a loss of hundreds of millions of dollars worth of equipment building a safe reliable seaplane was an obsession for the soviet union for much of the cold war and many prototypes and designs were considered over a period of several decades the loom class ekranoplan was the closest they ever got and it was a mighty vehicle getting it built wasn't easy the plane was commissioned in 1975 but wasn't finished until 1987 after which it remained in service with the black sea fleet for around a decade before being quietly retired the reasons for its abandonment are unclear it seemed perfectly suited to its purpose with enormous wings that generated ground effect as low as 12 feet above the water and a top speed of 340 miles per hour generated by its eight turbo fans despite this a planned second unit of the lund that was code named spatzle or rescuer was never built and no replacement was introduced for the lund after its withdrawal from service it spent years after its retirement at a naval station in caspias but more recently was towed to durban in dagestan where it will be placed on permanent display at patriots park the 1968 chevrolet 396 wasn't built as a 4x4 all-terrain vehicle nor did chevy ever intend that it would be turned into one that hasn't stopped someone from converting this old chevy into an off-road vehicle though and we must say that their resulting product is a little odd looking perhaps that's why it was abandoned after it was finished and rediscovered years later as a barn find in fairness to whoever carried out the work it looks like the project might be unfinished they've taken the time to fit a custom mesh with driving lamps to compensate for the lack of flip up headlights so if they were willing to pay that much attention to detail they would presumably have intended to do something about its somewhat unwieldy appearance elsewhere the quad exhaust set up the car's rear however it's a very questionable choice the luggage rack isn't doing much for the chevy's classic look either the car's owner says that it's been left standing for at least the past three years although looking at the interior wiring it's doubtful it could run at all without some urgent attention from an electrician the titanic is one of the most famous ships in world history but did you know it had a sister ship she was known as the britannica and she served as a hospital ship during the first world war bad luck must run in the family though because just like her famous sibling the britannica is at the bottom of the ocean it hit a german mine in 1916 and slipped 300 feet below the aegean sea surface close to the greek island of kia the ship's captain had desperately been trying to reach the island to beach's stricken vessel after hitting the mine but it was too badly damaged to make it for more than a century it barely ever saw a human visitor and didn't see anyone at all until the legendary french explorer jacques cousteau located the shattered hole of the ship in 1975 but all of that has been due to change as of february this year the greek government is keen to open up new tourist attractions and they've realized that the wreck of the britannica could make an excellent attraction to organized groups of divers speaking of significant shipwrecks here's the uss ling submarine in hackensack new jersey usa the 312-foot long submarine is a relic of the second world war but her service during the war was brief and insignificant in fact she didn't do much at all she's far more notable for what happened after her retirement she spent a brief time as a training vessel in the brooklyn navy yard but was then permanently birthed close to the new jersey naval museum where she underwent a full restoration and was open to the public as a museum that's where she stayed until 2012 when hurricane sandy ripped through the area aside from being shifted from her birth the uss ling was severely damaged by the storm and has never reopened in the eight years since its current location has become a bone of contention as it's on the river it isn't the property of the city it's no longer on the property of the family who owns the land the rest of the museum's built on either the u.s navy has declined to take ownership of it and the museum doesn't have the capital to move or restore it looks like it's going to stay there for a while when we talk about german u-boats we're usually talking about the second world war that isn't where the u-boats made their debut in the theater of conflict though u-boats were also a problem for allied forces and especially british forces during the first world war back then they were far more advanced than any maritime vehicle any other country owned or operated so it's no wonder that britain insisted that germany handed them all over after the war came to an end one such surrendered vessel is the ub-122 which has spent more than a century trapped in mud flats in the river medway in kent close to england's south coast it's thought that the tow rope attached to the u-boat snapped and the ub-122 ran aground and proved impossible to shift although the mud flats have done an excellent job of holding the vessel in place they might have done an even more remarkable job of preserving it every time the tide goes out it's possible to catch a glimpse of the whole ship and it's still in one piece after all this time the wreck is too delicate to move now even if someone wanted to once upon a time the land-to-sea cable car that stood in the waters of sid ifny in morocco was a source of great local pride and a service that was one of a kind in the whole world these days there isn't much more left of it than a concrete block and a shabby looking tower the sea cable car is a leftover of the days of spanish colonial rule in morocco and is in fact one of the last things the spanish built here before moroccan independence the creation of the cable car system was a solution to a very specific problem for logistical reasons the spanish needed to harbor there for practical reasons they couldn't build one the water was simply too shallow instead a crane and pulley system was constructed to haul both cargo and passengers off the land and onto the ships waiting at sea that's the purpose of the concrete block you see in these images it was a loading dock the goods were shifted across to the ships and carts which ran along cables between huge pylons today the cables are long gone and there's barely more than a hint left of the pylons either if you dive 90 feet below the water five miles off the coast of the jersey shore you'll come across something of an aquatic mystery there are two very rare steam locomotives down there covered in barnacles and surrounded by marine life nobody has any idea how they got down there to make things even stranger there's no record of two locomotives of their type ever going missing or even being built every known locomotive of this style has been accounted for from a historical point of view so where did these two watery strangers come from the engines are planet class 2-2-2-t units which would have been considered out of date even by the 1850s which is when they're believed to have met with their current predicament a casual diver first noticed them in 1985 but nobody came back for a better look until 2013 which is where most of this footage comes from one possible explanation is that they fell from a barge that was carrying them between boston and the mid-atlantic as locomotives were carried on this route by that method during the 1850s but there still ought to be a record of the lost cargo somewhere [Music] batman fans you might want to look away now it's the ultimate dream of many fans of the famous caped crusader to own their very own version of the batmobile yet apparently even being a batmobile doesn't save vehicles from being abandoned here's a replica of batman's famous car or at least the shell of it standing in a forest at an unknown location in the united states of america the car is missing its wheels and engine which has led some people to conclude that it might be an unused replica from this six flags batman show in new jersey there are also guides covering the topic of how to build your own batmobile available on the internet so this might be someone's half-finished project let's be honest though would you give up on making a batmobile when you'd put this much work into it already what's even stranger is that this isn't even the only batmobile that's turned up abandoned in the woods in recent years another one turned up elsewhere in the usa around a year later this time with its wheels attached but its body in worse condition who's dropping batmobiles everywhere and why the pima air and space museum in tucson arizona usa is precisely what it sounds like it's a museum that holds exhibitions and displays relics of the past of aviation it also plays host to an extremely colorful boneyard of world war ii era planes some of which have been visited by some of the most noted graffiti artists in the world the older and more ragged planes those which are less suitable for public display are kept at the back of the facility and have become a canvas for the artists who are invited to come down regularly and give the old aircraft a fresh lick of paint over time graffiti artists have been joined by more conventional artists who created beautiful paintings on wings and nose cones the practice of painting the planes in the boneyard started in 2012 and some of the exhibits are now considered so valuable that they've been moved back inside for preservation and safekeeping it's an interesting and innovative way of demonstrating that just because something no longer has a purpose it doesn't need to be abandoned permanently
