10 Years of EDC: Whats embarrassing and What Still Works?

what a great knife I've been gradually building towards buying a highquality pocket knife I'm more of a $40 knife guy but probably going to pull the trigger on a sage one in a week or so which looks like it might be similar in hand to this beauty that is a comment on knife review Spyderco super Leaf C1 140g made 10 years ago by me let's look today at what I was carrying 10 years ago I've chosen a few old EDC videos we're going to look at what was in them what I've still got and uh just perhaps some Reflections on 10 years a little bit longer even uh in this craft I used to love the It's a Wonderful knife Channel H it's probably the channel that got me making videos so um it's a nice little way to revisit and I was just just came up in my feed the other day H and I thought you know what start click on videos and there's a lot of old vintage Peak comments and those those comments back when I was a bit like Notice Me Senpai and also just wanting to get my own handle on where I stood in the world making EDC content um yes it's always fun to reflect on on our past internet selves or is it how's it going doing an everyday carry video today this is a pure everyday carry video there isn't any um first of all love the vertical camera work Pete great job um I don't know how I don't know how I just didn't have the you know what maybe I wasn't even using iMovie by then maybe I was using like a Windows Movie Maker or something I can't even remember yeah just need to swivel that around use the use the direction tool there Pete that be fine anyway um looking at what I've got there Leatherman skeletal was like the first thing that I started making videos on I bought a few things already but the Leon skeletal was my first video and it's still an excellent bit of Kit and I still have that exact same skeletal um the lead lensa P3 is the light you can see there the lead lensa still are they still a thing you never see them they've been absolutely eclipsed by the by just the every other Chinese brand haven't they the O lights and the th nights and the ace beams and all those but you know what they always seemed fine I think I was aware of them because letherman at one point did a crossover with them then you got a Swiss Army Tinker great little knife there and then my keys a wallet and a bandana so a buffer cloth I still have those buffer cloths around uh I wouldn't say that I edc1 every day but I still use them when I clean out my chicken Hutch and stuff they're quite tight around your nose and mouth so they do not a bad job but possibly not an EDC tool I think a lot of time you just had things you'd like to EDC every day and you maybe had a try it and you put a video on about it but then I'm sure we'll see a few more of those instances in the next couple as well how's it going this is a everyday carry update uh I promise I do have some more reviews for all of my all of you 20 or so fantastic subscribers oh 20 subscribers and this was probably 15 to 20 videos in it is slow going for at the start or at least it was back then yikes starting with a a torch this is a Maglite xl200 I'll focus in on that one jeez using the word Focus pretty lightly I love that I've just put the phone here and then wrapped my arms around it and it's just it was would have been iPhone for camera or something um that you just you I've always just wanted to to get it out you know I've I am I hate I don't hate I am always a bit like I roll my eyes at like self diagnosing adults but I'm fairly certain that I have some kind of TSM going on we've got diagnosed autistic people in my family and I'm obviously I get through life fine but I've always needed to sort of info dump on people so even to a crowd of zero people I would have been pumping out videos and broadcasting myself and my specialist interest um onto this torch I remember this mag light very clearly I think it ended up cuz it needed four AAA batteries or three AAA batteries it ended up um getting left too long in like a glove box or something and the batteries leaked um the mag lights even still exist people buy Mag light still it's like the most basic torch or flashlight brand at that time and possibly still is I remember there were solitier gift sets you'd always used to get my goodness not much new on my casys um still the same uh Uncle Bill sliver gripper two sets of car keys still the same sliver gripper the very same on my current Keys even today best little EDC piece of Kit the fine tweezers always get out the ear hairs with them good job and I um don't have this car key on that one there's a Lancer we've always had Lancers Mitsubishi Lancers they you know just cheap good cars and um the other car key on there is for a Ford car it was bright [Music] yellow and my God you think I cop [ __ ] for driving that around town but it cost nothing to run and it was just fun very silly car but yeah that's probably the best memory of those keys for sure um I've started carrying a leather or my Lea uh juice CS4 a bit more I loved the juice line of Leatherman they were really really good they don't make them anymore they sort of replaced them with I guess the rebar they don't really do anything colorful and sort of casually minded like the juices were um everyone remembers the nut and fancy bumbag juice S2 but man is this an awesome multitool go look at my 2008 review on this nothing's changed that's a lanyard isode for it uh they did them with the flat scales for a while and then they did with one silver scale and one sort of rippled scale but then they just got rid of them entirely they were doing him as single arms for a while um but yeah the juice was a long gone and I think I would have just given this one away at some point I usually just give things away when I when I get people who even give a semblance of real life interest in my hobby you're lucky to get out of that conversation without getting something given to you next time I see you U I'm still carrying the same Maxpedition uh CMC wallet this didn't last long I could only imagine that it was such a female attractant every time I would get out my wallet and the sound of would Echo around the shop my wife would have to have had a word at some point saying back off a bit you're getting too much [ __ ] thrown at you with your max Edition CMC wallet um and then the other thing of course is my Big Max Edition well not big but my full on kit of everyday stuff that I'm going to stop you there these kits were fun to make for videos those sweet sweet sweet views but I wouldn't couldn't have carried that with me in a daily sense it was for films you'd make them you'd make little kit videos see how many things you can put in just trying to chase those those um viral videos that went around for a while with all the stuff in the really neatly arranged little kit uh so yeah I would say that that might have gone in the car every now and then um just yeah it's is 10 years ago now I'm happy to say that I was probably just saying stuff to get a video going I did make them obviously there it is and I've still got that little kid it's just got like a fire blanket and some Band-Aids in it and it's sitting in one of the cars but uh yeah that wouldn't really be an EDC product for me ever really so sorry about that one all right moving to March 2014 uh we've got a little bit more of a a flatlay here that I can just talk you through so we've got a gerber D first of all look at that phone W okay so that phone is a um Apple iPhone 4 it must be with the thickest case ever like my case at the moment is thick but that's cuz it's got a bit of cards and stuff behind it I mean we'll all laugh at these things that we're currently carrying in ten years so I'm sure but there you go a gerber dime I still have that I like the ger dime enough even still it's a bit sh made but I like the design of it I like the bottle cap on the end of it bottle cap lifter the Lesman crater c33 see I've moved into buying like a dedicated pocket knife by this point and I didn't know what knife companies were good really I was and I didn't have any money was broke back then didn't be money so I thought Leatherman has a good Leatherman branded knife It's Made in America it's I didn't really know much about Steels so I got it and I've still got it I'll show you it it's um you know been sharpen to buggery and stuff but it did it job I wouldn't carry it now it's tip down carry it did its job though and then that wallet my God that wallet was just I thought it was the coolest thing having a money clip there's a certain phase that gentlemen go through where you think money clips are really really cool or you did you thought they're really really cool it's like when you you're into cigars and maybe Kango hats or little hats or um you know that's Scotch you know beard oils it's like money clip beard oil cigar bro Scotch bro it's a b it's the male equivalent of being like a wine mom and having like a giant clock on your wall and a live life live life Laugh Love sticker or some [ __ ] H so I thought it was the coolest thing ever but it invariably just poked me in the backside all the time so I got rid of that as well and then you can just see there still a Victorinox classic pretty like pretty similar case that really just the Victorinox has got the little little light in it now so that's the uh that's the March uh 2014 EDC update going on there right so this one is July 2014 and I've got some decent stuff now like quite drastically accelerated into some better things uh a proper brand name flashlight torch that's a 47s preon P1 uh fulcon even u4 little folding knife super gold steel good stuff spider Celica what can you say it's fine Leatherman squirt PS4 cool a little Le carabina type keychain a Victorinox Swiss tool Spirit you know and the max the wallet is still a Max Edition but it's no longer a velcro one this was just a really ultra light super thin uh really cheap wallet and I've kind of stuck with that philosophy since until I got rid of wallets entirely and now I just carry a couple of cards in the that slip case on my phone so we'll see what crazy thing I'm doing in 10 years time from now I suppose but yeah this is quite a decent little little EDC setup for sure uh iPhone 6c the colored ones I really that's that's probably my favorite iPhone if the color if the camera was good on it and and they made a similar one to that now like a lower cost plastic backed you know cheaper iPhone I'd be all over I only have these expensive ones now because I use it for my camera and my filming and stuff hey there everyday carry video whoa and it looks like we've came into the big leagues now we've got a paramilitary 2 I finally came good on my comment to Abe that I'm going to get myself a good knife wasn't a sage in the end it was a pm2 and this pm2 actually I for such a small amount of time it uh fell into the river when I was King and it was just devastating uh I was so poor back then and I was really like all of my free money probably more than should have been was going into this Hobby and um yeah I was devastated that was a really upsetting thing that happened uh I did not have like you know you're at the start of your career paths we're living in a house that needs so much work done on it and it was like such a dumb luxury to buy myself like a $280 paramilitary to in Australia at the time when I already had a Delica um but the sickness was sort of taking home um yeah I mean what I didn't carry I didn't carry a Rubik's Cube I don't know why that's there it's probably one of those things everyone was into fidget cubes and stuff so I probably was like oh maybe I carried it once or twice and then made the video was excited about I don't know it's you know there's an element of embarrassment to anything that you've done longer than five years ago I challenge you to look at your own stuff and disagree you may not all have the the the benefit SL curse of living a largely online life broadcasted life for the last 10 years or as I do see I don't have Facebook I don't have I have an Instagram but I don't broadcast like my momentto moment personal life anywhere really but my knife life I pretty constantly broadcasted for yeah almost 12 years now so yeah and I was a younger man back then I'm you know I was doing what I wanted but it was a um probably unadvisable but looking at the stuff I see the the car is now a Honda it's the same Honda that I have now um the car is gone the Ford car uh I've got um still got that phone that I like the green handle leather and micro good my preon lost I lost that as well very sad and I replaced it with the tanky little oite the ton I never liked it as much as the pron I like a Slimmer EDC torch for sure um this is my current one I'll do an EDC after this video is done but yeah um I always like a Slimmer torch even this one's probably not as Slim as I usually like I like a pen style torch but anyway so that's the um beginning of 2015 this one here uh yeah it's probably you know not a bad EDC by any margin I've just changed everything things preference wise how we've grown though how we've grown it's funny at this time I didn't know what kind of well I was working out whether I was going to be like a knife guy or like a Wrangler star type guy I used to watch um You Know Abe obviously over it's a wonderful knife I used to watch Cutlery lover nothing fancy obviously late Boy Scout on multi-tools knife Tex you know everyday Knife Guy uh Kyle nosworthy when his name was Weeden weedin all these old channels that are still half going half not going lot of not going but yeah I was just wanting to be one of those and you know you you just sit I've seen with YouTube there's two ways to grow your YouTube doing this is neither of them just doing basic sporadic knife content and you might not want to grow maybe you just want to share and that's fine as well get the poison out that's largely what I do but um if you do want to grow your channel just advice you need to either do something quite different or like high effort highly edited videos or you need to upload all the [ __ ] time so it's one of those two things otherwise you're just going to sit at the same level and the the viewers and also the actual program itself just won't grab you and you won't take off so it was only when I started doing things a unique thing which was the edge testing and then started doing like just goof videos more the the edited stuff that I do now that's when you get a few more subscribers even up to this point I was sitting on like a thousand subscribers and this is after like two or three years of like you know at least a video a week or two um so yeah interesting to think how it goes anyway those are my old edcs uh let's have a look at my current EDC all right we'll just get the boring part out of the way first uh this Hello is my my phone that is my um my main recording device for my YouTube this is a dongle for a a Bluetooth a you know wireless microphone that I'm trying to increase my sound quality with I'm trying to not sure if it's working that well uh I don't know I have to I'll have to do a bit more research maybe uh but let's go just full on pocket dump let's just see what I've got going on here um oh yeah and this also is my wallet so in this part here it's got some cards u maybe like a $20 bill or something really moved away from carrying a wallet entirely uh I think it was throwing my back out sitting on a wallet and my front pockets are full with things uh so this is my watch I'll start with my hand uh this is a basic G-Shock I don't know much about watches I'm not really interested in watches so I just want my watches to be normal and the G-Shock is pretty normal person watch I also have a Victorinox which is normal as well I like to have numbers on the face I find my processing speed is a little bit slow converting Roman numerals or Art Deco lines into the time don't know just myself it's always been that way uh this one tells the time and just numbers date it's got a a little backlight in there whatevers uh yeah not particularly interesting to anyone I'm sure this is a wedding ring you see when you um when you have a knife channel on the internet and you there's there's thousands of hours of you talking about knives on the internet you really need to broadcast sorry ladies I'm taking so this guy stays on at all times right now next up let's do pens I I have started carrying a pen I think in those old videos the first pen really was a a space pen that you'd see me carry sometimes so the space pen uh is definitely you know it's a start the ink is fine but this is a tactile turn bolt action pen and this bolt action pen well this guy is uh it'sit a little bit beaten up this is the copper one uh this got stuck on once I think it got like too hot or too cold or something and I just couldn't get it off to change the ink so I had to get a pair of pliers and twist it and of course that sunk into that soft copper long story short it's my pen and it's got my you know my brand of of use and abuse on it the tip's been dropped a couple of times into the pavement as well but overall I like the patina that things get as you as you use them and enjoy them so to speak my torch is this little EAC d3c uh you know it's a small uh uses one of these little batteries here an rcr123a so they're kind of annoying to keep recharged and charged I always like a torch that just has a USB port on or a charge but I love how this guy looks I like it's just straight to Max brightness uh on or off and then to do the other settings you need to loosen the head up a little bit which is something that I got used to but generally speaking I just want it Max all time I carry another little uh pocket torch on me as well on my keys first thing in my pocket is my airpods Apple airpods always got at least one of these in I'm like I don't know I is it obnoxious to have an airpod in when you're going around the shops I'm not one big on bumping into people and socializing uh so I generally have my my my horse blinders on when I'm at the shops with one of these in so obviously I can hear something's going on but I'm used to listen to a podcast or something like that so that go there uh what else do I got in here oh so I got a couple of things from those old videos I still have that I'll show you in a bit as well my keys now I remember you used to show you keys on YouTube right and there'd always be that guy in the comments who cautioned you against doing that because someone's going to make a wax key 3D printer find out where you I mean I don't know I I don't know but it's just one of those things that people would say it's still got them sliver grippers on it right there it's got this my little other light is a uh Phoenix e3r this guy's been worn to [ __ ] but does really well does a good job it's got a red light blue light as well I think yeah red light that's the one night vision light it's just good it's I ended up going with this one because it needs a long press to turn on so it doesn't turn on in your pocket that easily so that's why I went with the Phoenix there and I use this one probably even more than this one cuz often it's when my keys are already out I'm walking to my house or something quickly swap over to that go and make sure the chickens are in bed or whatever uh now what you probably all want to see is the knife I've got today is my alma Eagle Alma Eagle ultral light I love the alma Eagle this is my favorite knife uh design I love how they look I love a really basic neutral looking knife and the eagle is about as basic and neutral looking as you can get uh really really nice uh it's thin blade it's made of A8 which sucks but um now I'm Stone sharpening I'll just touch it up from time to time uh the geometry of it works in its favor too Grail knife once I got this one there's an orange one in zdp 189 I don't know how long they made them for they're long gone but God I'd love one of those um but I love using this I was a bit too scared to carry this at first given that they're no longer made once a knife's no longer made I always find a real you know you you want to you don't want to use it up you know so uh I've got over that now and I'm just using it caring as you can see bit of Schmutz on the blade there other knives I may carry are the um stretch if I'm working hard around the yard and not on if not wanting to dangle fix blade off me I'm coming back and forth from the hardware store and don't look like a psycho with a fix blade on my hip uh people don't really mind too much in the country you do see it a little bit in where I am it's quite rural here so no one really no freaks out but it's just kind of a bit of a dorky looking thing I think or it's the trm neutron 2 which is probably I usually say it's overall I think it's the best EDC knife currently on the market so just for for you know covering all bases type scents so those are the possibles um multitool in my back pocket I usually have a multitool um the Leatherman kill because it sort of offsets a bit it sits around the side of my back pocket so I'm not sitting on it lean curl is a really good one I like the curl a lot um so often it's been the Cur lately it feels slim it feels nice I like the you know I like the wave aesthetic um and it's got a pretty full compliment of tools as well or if I'm after something a bit more rugged I will carry the Leatherman Arc which you know as I said in my last video the further I get from spending all that money on it the less I worry about the price of it it's that whole um roast tinted glasses thing that you get uh and it this is you know probably lean's best multi-tool objectively speaking in my opinion anyway couple of multi tools there uh stuff from old videos well I forgot to bring it up that there's a shire Titan in there I that ended up having the battery melt and explode in it sort of thing and just AE away very upsetting look at this guy this is the sh fire god what is it sidekick right this hung off my work stuff this has for about seven years now and this guy is solid that's what they say about sh fire lights is true they last forever unless you let the battery leak but this is recharging it's a little lithium cell in it doesn't even have a cover over never did never had a cover over the USB in but it's never slowed it down it's pretty beat up pretty worn out looking but uh yeah pretty cool I thought I just thought I'd show you that uh this is that skeletal from that first ever video uh it's still in great condition the knife's a little bit shorter having been sharpened several times um but yeah a great really recommendable allinone bit of EDC kit the skeletal CX for sure do they still make this though I don't know they make a kind of skeletal but don't know all this is that Gerber dime that was in that video same one love the Gerber dime love the design hate the construction but it's nice little sprung pair of needle noose pliers and this is the squirt PS4 that was in that video as well thought that was this I'll always have I love the PS4 they don't make this anymore either sad anyway uh this is a little capsule that used to have on my keys uh usually keep like a antihistamine or anti-diarrhea medicine in here um right now it actually has my kids my children's teeth a baby tooth for each child it's like more of a keep sakey thing is that creepy as [ __ ] it is a bit isn't it but uh yeah there you go pair of teeth in there you know I think once it was like the tooth Theory needed to come and we were like just make sure you don't leave that tooth out somewhere so she has the money and then the tooth fa and the tooth still around so I think I was like I'll put it in that she won't even be able to open it CU you know your kids go through your stuff right anyway so there's that too uh and this is my old Alou Falcon I got this out today I got I got some new sharpening stones and I'm going to redo this on my new sharpening Stones because I I just made a mess of this edge with my old um you know with my old Workshop system and stuff my old Elma Falcon ultral light it's like a small version of the eagle and I love the Falcon I probably would prefer it to the eagle if the blade didn't make me sad every time I looked at it so there we go and that my friends is my EDC at the moment so what do you think how has it uh changed is it better or worse than it was 10 years ago it's probably a little bit better uh pens and knives are all better and you know you're just looking back on it obviously you you work I've stayed in the same job the whole time so you move up the you know the the ranks or the the ladder a little bit and you know you have a bit more spare money you you um we own a home now we' you got a bit more Equity it was 10 years ago man it was like that's a rough tough part of your life when you have new kid and I can imagine what it's like now now it's like even harder to find a home and pay rent and stuff like that everything costs more and it feels like the wages haven't quite kept up and I can only imagine and even still now me a lot of the other YouTube guys they just seem to always just have new stuff coming in all the time and I just I I I just don't I can't um we spent money on we we kids our kids do $600 a month of music lessons it's just we've got way more going we're trying we're just trying to pay off our house faster it's just I've never been able to spend like more than $500 on a knife without feeling horrendous about it um and you know without having to like really have used the probably Channel funds or used um you know patreon when I've got patrons thank you again patrons that usually helps in fact I had some stuff arri but it's all Patron and channel AdSense stuff so don't ever watch all of us YouTube guys and think like that you need to try and keep up because it's just not possible I don't think it's possible if you're just a normal person in a normal job without like you know um inherited wealth or something like that it's not a bad thing it doesn't mean you're poor even if you can't like live like you see all these YouTube people living there's a lot of Wheeling deing goes on behind the scenes I think I said last time don't judge your inside on what other people's outsides are cuz that's all you really getting from YouTubers is the outside what we choose to show you in our EDC dumps even like and we don't choose to tell you like what we had to like go without and what we sort of you know how we bought a multitool and then the power bill was like a week late because we made a stupid Choice like we don't all say that [ __ ] so yeah try not to try not to feel like it's a rat race that you need to keep up and and I've really slowed down lately and I'm focusing my money on sharpening stones and maintenance kits and things like that cuz they are so much cheaper and you can use them on all of your stuff again so anyway that's the ADC for now I didn't talk about fixed blades because it's not quite fixed blade everyday season just yet but when I do carry a fix blade lately it's been the the trm poim really nice fix blade knife there in Magna cut but it's starting towards winter I'm about to put a Polish on my crey magnet cart knife going a mirror polish on that scandy edge I hope that'll be interesting to see if I can um and then that'll be my wood cutting knife and my fireplace knife and stuff and it's that nice winter time in Australia again so it all it's all about to be like the other phase of of gear enjoyment about to take off anyway longer video thank you for sticking with me if you did stick with me through the entire time and I'll see you all in the next one goodbye
