we've been living on oahu for almost two years and today we're taking you around the entire island of oahu to show you 10 foods you must try while visiting hawaii just be out with us [Music] the first thing you must try when in hawaii is kahlua pork don't get confused with kailua town those two words are very similar so what is kalua pork well basically it's pig roasted underground for many hours up to six or more hours one of the best places to actually try kalua pork is konos restaurant right now they have four locations and they roast their kalua pork foot 12 hours it is slow roasted pork and it's pulled apart so it's shredded it's very moist and very flavorful the flavor is it's very smoky flavor another great place you can try kalua pork is at a luau well kalu pork is a hawaiian staple food and at the luau you can try pretty much all the hawaiian traditional foods and if you go to the polynesian center and get a package that includes a luau they will bring the entire pig out to the stage so all the tourists can come and take pictures and how do they bake the pig is it like in a giant oven traditionally kalua pork is done in the underground oven called emu if you haven't seen our hawaiian words vlog we will leave a link in the description so let's dig in here at konos you can get a variety of dishes made with kalua pork the one right now got a lunch plate and it includes a scoop of rice salad and if you get the lunch plate during happy hours you get lemonade for free you can get kalua pork sandwich get kalua pork wrap for breakfast you can pretty much in a lot of places you can find kahlua pork omelette kahlua pork eggs benedict oh don't forget kalua pork loco moco another great place to try kalua pork is in helena's restaurant if you watched our seven day itinerary challenge in one of the days we went for dinner to helena's keep in mind it's cash only and check out our vlog they have all the hawaiian staples there right and in all um honesty i think all the different places that we've tried kalua pork i would say helene is i prefer it the best that's just my personal choice it has a lot of flavor you can taste the smokiness behind it it's really good tones is great as well yeah close second so when you come to hawaii you know what to do try kahlua pork after having kahlua pork in konos it's time to come to one of my favorite spot helenas their kahlua pork is so good so succulent so flavorful and also their short ribs come inside and show you what it's all about so here's the kahlua pork now the difference between here and konos is that here they actually cook it in an imu which is the traditional way of cooking the cool pork and it does make a tremendous difference in my opinion because it's you could smell how smoky it smells and it's super moist i don't know if you could see that oh so good oh my god oh my god the taste is just tremendous it just explodes wow and again i don't know if it's because it's in the emu that it's cooked but the flavor in this guys you have to come here and try this kahlua pork from here and also try it in kona so you can really see the difference in what i'm talking about but let's get to the creme de la creme so now these ribs they're actually seasoned to perfection then they're hung to dry for six hours and then they're pan-fried pull these so this is a large portion and there's like about eight pieces in here matt what do you think delicious matt says it's delicious let's see oh it just punches you in the face with flavor i'm serious these ribs from the first time i've had it it stayed in my mind as far as what it tastes like and what the flavor is and now coming back a second time all the memories just come flooding back with flavor so good it's a must try here's the result matt finishes as well this is just so good so so good thank you kindly that we ordered a second round [Music] oh my god best local ribs you must try another must try when you're in hawaii is an acai bowl let's dig in we are here at knott's coffee roasters they're acai bowls it's pretty good it varies from where you go obviously because of the toppings that are put right in the bowl so most of the time acai bowl is pretty much the same right it has the bed of this gelato type acai berry blend and the difference is the toppings that they put on it and the presentation and the acai itself might taste different from place to place depending on how much sugar or honey they add while making it in this bowl they have strawberries blueberries raspberries bananas granola chia seeds almond shavings and coconut chips this acai bowl is loaded acai bowls are very refreshing it is a great breakfast because it does have granola and nuts and berries and i also like to have it as a snack now let's get into some interesting facts about acai berries did you know they actually grow on acai palms and they originated from brazil it is so common in hawaii you can find them in pretty much any restaurants and cafes acai berries look very similar to blueberries however they do have a seed inside and the seed takes 80 percent of the berry so when they export acai berries they export it as a puree and you can find it in the frozen section of supermarkets and with the puree you can make smoothies or acai bowls acai bowls is so refreshing delicious and healthy so without further ado we need to finish this up and on to the next must try things in hawaii for all of you with a sweet tooth this is a must try food while in hawaii for this fluffy portuguese piece of dough you actually have to stay in line at leonard's bakery they come as original with no filling inside or you can choose different varieties of filling as you can see this is a an original this is plain and it's very fluffy it's very soft powdered with sugar and it's baked fresh on the premises it is best to eat it hot just as you buy it you will see a lot of people eating it just outside the door leonard's bakery is such a popular spot and hawaiian's favorite a lot of people come here to even take pictures with the sign and they don't mind standing in line for an hour as i mentioned before it comes in so many different flavors right now i got a new flavor that we haven't tried before with the van this is hopia uh as you remember jopia means coconut but you see how much stuffing they actually put in it this is insane amount of stuffing personally i'm not fond of that much stuffing and the stuff in itself does not taste that amazing to me but a lot of people love it and they come to leonard's bakery just to get malasadas try it out and let us know in the comments if you love malasadas another must try food while visiting hawaii is poke if you have not seen our hawaiian words vlog poke means to slice or cut crosswise cookie was originated here in hawaii since the primary source of food was fish so what they did is they chop fish in slices and cubes and put some sea salt on it now hawaiians have taken pocky to the whole new level by adding different types of house sauces and every place that you try pokey have their own original recipe for their sauce we selected a few places for you to try poke here on oahu and you might think i'm just standing here on the parking lot and it doesn't even look like there is anything in here but on the second floor there is a small cookie shop it's called pokey assassins and what's unique about this place is that they go fish themselves to bring you the freshest fish and they do have their own unique sauces let's be all right so outside is the secret show you right there so gentle it just melts in my mouth this is called a pokey bowl i got a regular size it comes with two choices of pokey it's a scoop each and two scoops of rice and it's just twelve dollars and it's amazingly marinated i just love their sauces and i love how fresh the it's a must try the best place to try musubi is here at musubi cafe they have several locations on the island and why we chose this place well because they have different kinds they make special glaze sauce and they add extra ingredients like avocado cucumber egg well see it for yourself let's begin we ordered two musubis one spam and egg the other one spam egg and cucumber there are so many different types of masoors and the rice comes warm and you might look like it looks like a sushi but the rice is actually different from the social at first when i was but when i tried it it's actually pretty good it is a little bit on the sweet side it has some type of glaze and for me personally they put way too much rice i don't usually finish all the rice but it's a great quick snack it's under three dollars it's definitely amazing right with hawaii so this goodness right here is called shave ice this right here can be found any and everywhere in the island of hawaii it comes in many different flavors as you can see mine has a bunch of different toppings on it this one cost me nine dollars now they're normally not this expensive that's because where i bought it from is in the center of waikiki and of course the prices are much higher because it's a heavily tourist area but not only that they do put a lot of stuff on there if you go a little ways outside waikiki and go to local stores that actually sell this it's not as expensive but the difference also is the liquid that they put in it the actual syrup in the places where it's actually cheaper they use syrups like um it comes in all different flavors so you have strawberry and and cherry and blueberry and all these different crazy names of syrup that they pour on there and basically what it is just the ice and then like a rainbow of colors and the colors obviously represent the flavor of the of the syrup poured over ice what also determines the cost of it is the texture of ice some places the texture of the ice is super super super flaky and super soft this is like that so the price of this is a little bit more expensive because you are getting better quality shave ice a lot of people pronounce it shaved ice with an ed but it's never ever shaved ice it's shave ice always this actually really tastes good this is the first time i'm having it from this place even though we live just 10 minutes away from here this is the first time i'm actually having it from them and it actually tastes great i've had it before from a local truck kind of like your ice cream truck that comes around your neighborhood that sells it and it was also really great i had that one with my daughter and that one was really good i really enjoyed the syrup taste um but this one it's definitely to another level i can taste the quality of the syrup and it really tastes good so i highly recommend when coming to hawaii make sure you stop in get shave ice experience it it's just shave ice with syrup but it is a treat here and in this hot weather hits the spot every single time it's really good so this is the loco moco as you can see it's a big plate it's gravy hamburger patty with two sunny side eggs and you have a mac salad covered with underneath is a bed of rice so there are three ways you can get your eggs over hard over easy and over medium i got mine over medium now this is your traditional uh locomotive as you can see it's white rice it's not fried so it's kind of like home style so we're gonna dig into this and see what it tastes like typically the way you eat a local mocha is that you take the gravy the rice the salad the eggs and you just kind of blend it all together and make this one big concoction of goodness and then oh wow the gravy takes this to a whole other level and actually the beef powder too tastes really great you can taste the salad it gives it another depth this is really really good it's actually much better than i anticipated you have to try this and this whole dish is under 10 so that's a bargain it's a must so how you liking our must try list so far if you're liking it give us a thumbs up and don't forget to subscribe it helps our channel grow quick reminder for the month of november 2020 i will be giving away a free drone photo here in beautiful hawaii taken by me and i want to share it with you in the description i will leave an email so you can email us with the subject line free oahu photo and i will get that out to you as soon as possible now let's get back to the meat and potatoes of this video wait or should i say garlic shrimp and rice that's right the next thing you should try when here in oahu is garlic shrimp it's all over the island you can find it in food trucks you can find it in restaurants on the menu it is everywhere and it is delicious but not all garlic shrimp tastes the same my personal favorite is at ted's now i know hold on don't beat me down yet i know a lot of people when they think of garlic shrimp what do you think of giovanni's hair that's fine i've never had it so in the description if you've had it leave a comment let me know what it tastes like i'm sure i'm gonna try it at one point but if you have let me know what it tastes like but what i can vouch for is ted's bakery on the north shore their garlic shrimp is to die for and if you don't believe me i'll take you there so here's the portion you get this is 15 bucks you get two scoops of rice big scoops you get max salad you get the spicy garlic shrimp guys i'm not kidding you this thing explodes with flavor don't let the casual dining of this place fool you if you look at it from the outside you're like ah it's just another little roadside restaurant it's not the food here is phenomenal the lines usually shoot outside the door like there's always long lines here the cool thing about this is that they give you this little slice of delight right here all these different pies it's really so that you can try it because once you try you get hooked when you get hooked they sell the actual entire pie and nine out of ten times you see people walking out here with the whole pie in their hand so they know exactly what they're doing they give you this and you think oh i'm getting a deal and they hooking you that's what it's all about here they give you the side of like a sweet and sour peppery mixture here i could drink this take a bath in this it smells do you smell this but this right here guys look let's take a look at this [Music] the shrimp is cooked to perfection the garlic just explodes in your mouth the breading it's like there's a breadcrumb texture on it but i don't really know what it is but it's not just sauce you get like like a breadcrumbs texture on it and the spice is just enough it's not like heat that's overbearing but it's just up the flavor this is so good this is spot on i've been waiting for this minute not mind your business while i eat i finished it just that quick this was phenomenal guys i highly recommend if you come to the north shore stop by this place ted's bakery you will not regret it and you will thank me you will actually thank you leave a comment in the bottom in the description let me know what you thought about this place see if i was exaggerating i'm telling you i'm not trust me on this one [Music] and the last thing must try when you come to hawaii is poi of course it's a traditional hawaiian side dish maybe it is made out of hand pounded tarot so first they get tarot root they boil it and then they pound it by hand here it it was first opened in 1905 actually and it's been an active poi factory for almost 70 years then it was turned into an art gallery then it was an experimental kitchen and then only in 1902 it was converted into a hawaiian traditional restaurant where they serve all hawaiian staple cuisine here i have kalua pork poi some salad poi here is a little bit different than in helena's restaurant it is more jello like and as far as taste this poi tastes a little bit more plain in helena's i think it's a little bit more on the sour side but i'm gonna let devan try it and he'll tell you what it is so because pory doesn't really have that much flavor it's usually mixed with the food so i actually want to taste it to see how it compares to helena's and other places that i've had it and let's give this a try it's definitely thicker and more gelatinous yes helene is definitely more has a more sour taste than this but again don't expect any type of flavor from this it's really very very very bland and you know you have the kalua pork which has you know the salt from it and stuff and that's why you would eat it with this so it gives it a little bit more flavor but it is this is really packed with nutrients so it's definitely worth trying while you're here make sure you check it out and support local businesses when you do come to hawaii
