[Music] in 1994 quentin tarantino's masterpiece pulp fiction was released thanks to its memorable characters and sharp dialogue this unique movie is the ultimate story of crime redemption and divine intervention focusing on three separate stories which are told out of sequence from one another we follow two hitmen jules played by samuel l jackson and vince played by john travolta whom work for a powerful crime boss marcellus wallace played by ving rhames vince must take marcellus wife mia played by uma firm and out for a night on the town but it all goes to hell after she ods bruce willis plays a boxer called butch who is on the run after winning a fixed boxing match that he was supposed to lose and must get his family heirloom gold watch back and jules believes that god spared him from getting killed after he and vincent miraculously survive getting shot at at close range in this memorable movie that is a standout piece of 90s cinema so it's time to get out your jules action figurine and chow down on a royale with cheese as we look into 10 things that you didn't know about pulp fiction let's check it out [Music] number 10 source of inspiration quentin tarantino and roger avery were new and upcoming filmmakers when they teamed up to write pulp fiction in 1990. their initial idea was to write a short movie thinking that'll be easier to get financed by a studio but then drop the idea as they realize that short films aren't really a thing when it comes to mainstream movies they took inspiration from a 1963 italian horror movie called black sabbath which was made up of three individual segments the plan was that tarantino would write and direct one segment avery would write another along with a third filmmaker who would work on the third segment although no other filmmaker joined in so it was just down to tarantino and avery the project was to be called black mask named after a 1920s pulp magazine which focused on adventure crime and mystery number nine then tarantino turned his segment into its own movie [Music] the segment tarantino was working on for the three-part trilogy movie ended up being his first feature film reservoir dogs which itself became a widely praised movie just imagine that reservoir dogs could have been a part of pulp fiction tarantino's debut film was released in 1992 and the following year roger avery directed his own movie killing zoe in 1993 tarantino returned to his three-part movie to continue working on the script where he apparently added story elements that were originally written for the movie through romance avery's segment was called the pandemonium reigns which would become the gold watch segment and out of all places avery and tarantino continued to work on the script in amsterdam [Music] and thus in 1993 the script was now going under the title of pulp fiction and was complete number eight tristar backed out of pulp fiction [Music] to get pulp fiction off the ground tarantino had formed his new production company a band apart and got producer lawrence bender on board who previously produced reservoir dogs along with a 1 million backing from another production company called jersey films where jersey films were then searching for a movie studio to fully financially back up pulp fiction and tristar showed interest in the movie and paid tarantino for a first look deal which means that they hold on to the script while they consider whether or not they're going to produce the movie however tristar bailed out of pulp fiction as the company's chief found the script to be quote too demented there were complaints that the company didn't like that substances were used in the movie and they felt that it was too violent and felt too much like a low budget movie and there was some confusion as well as to why characters die in one scene but then reappear later despite the fact that the story is told out of sequence yeah basically it was a no from tristar so mirror max ended up producing pulp fiction and gave the production a budget of eight million dollars of which five of that eight million was put towards the cast which basically just left three million dollars to make the actual movie wow number seven there was going to be strong ties to reservoir dogs [Music] when it came time to casting the character vince fager the gangster who works for marcellus wallace who has a love for drugs and reading books while sitting on the toilet tarantino intended the part to be played by michael madsen whom he had previously worked with in reservoir dogs in fact madsen's character in reservoir dogs was called vic vega and giving the fact that vic vega and vince vega both have the same last name and the nature of their characters and them both being pawns in violent organized crime this has led to a lot of fan speculation that with madsen playing vince vega he was going to be the twin brother to vic vega which would have been an interesting connection between the two movies however madison dropped out of the project to star in white earp instead so john travolta was cast in the role at that time travolta's career had something of a decline and long gone were his glory days of saturday night fever and grace and pulp fiction really put him back on the map and gave his career a renaissance however there are still persistent rumors that vince vega and vic vega are indeed brothers so are they well if you want them to be then yes they are in fact for years there was actually stories going around that there was going to be a movie based on the vega brothers starring both john travolta and michael madsen as vic and vince vega but obviously nothing's happened number six casting possibilities certain characters in the pulp fiction script were written specifically for the actors who would play them such as samuel l jackson who plays jules the foot master who changes his life after divine intervention and harvey keitel who plays the wolf a crime cleaner who erases traces of any crime taking place at a speedy time along with tim roth as pumpkin and amanda plummer as honeybunny however with some characters it was trial and error to find the actors to play the parts for example the butch character was written as a much younger guy and tarantino envisioned the character to be played by matt dillon but he was taking too long to decide as to whether or not he would be in the movie so bruce willis was cast instead with the script being slightly changed to explain that butch is an aging boxer when it came time to casting mia wallace the boss's wife who vince has to take out for a night on the town tarantino's first choice was michelle pfeiffer but she wasn't available other actresses considered include meg ryan julia louis-dreyfus and halle berry but it was uma furman who was cast and pulled it off in space as she's brilliant in the movie and looks pretty smokin on the poster where she is um smoking oh yes and that caused quite the controversy itself number five the lucky strike poster situation [Music] so as mentioned we all know the famous pulp fiction poster it's without a doubt one of the most iconic posters of all time however slight modifications had to take place as this was the original poster which you can see looks very similar apart from a few minor differences namely the title font used however this poster used the brand lucky strike cigarettes which you can see sitting on the bed there if you look closely however the lucky strike company weren't happy as pulp fiction's production did not seek permission first to use their brand and they threatened legal action so instead a fictional brand of smokes were created called red apple which replaced the lucky strike packet on the poster and the fictional brand would go on to be used in other tarantino and robert rodriguez movies other alternative posters that aren't as common include this one which shows all four main characters sitting in a room together which admittedly is pretty cool there was also individual posters made specifically for certain characters in the movie which i think have a 1940s gangster feel about them this one which just has the four main characters standing in front of a white background just looks bland in my opinion i mean they couldn't even bother to put samuel jackson's jules wig on and the japanese poster has a huge emphasis on bruce willis and is probably the only poster to feature tim roth but the main poster we got was cool and sexy and i wouldn't want it any other way number four quentin tarantino does but doesn't reveal what's in the briefcase so something that has been widely debated among fans over the years is what exactly was in the briefcase vince and jules set out to retrieve from marcellus wallace all the movie shows us is a gold glow which shines out of the case whenever it's opened and all that we know is that it has a powerful effect onto those who look into it there have been all sorts of fan theories some interesting some crazy ranging from the case containing marcellus wallace's soul to it being the holy grail to it also being a chunk of gold to even a gold suit worn by elvis yep this is one movie mystery that keeps on going and isn't going to disappear anytime soon now we know that behind the scenes all that was in the case was a light bulb hence the gold glow whenever the case is open however this still doesn't symbolically explain what's in the case however in 2007 quentin tarantino and robert rodriguez made a special myspace video where they were promoting their grindhouse double bill when tarantino finally reveals what's in the briefcase and just as he's about to say it the old grainy footage cuts out when you look in it however before this happens tarantino says that whenever people ask him what's in the briefcase he always replies it's whatever you think what's in the briefcase what's in the briefcase and i keep doing whatever you think film analyst rob aeger pointed out in a video that he made that that line may not be a flippant one but rather tarantino revealing the real answer before the footage cutting out gag that whatever is in the briefcase is what you think it is and that's the real answer and i must stress that this was his discovery not mine but one that i actually think makes lots of sense and actually has a lot of merit however i kind of like not knowing what is in the case i like to think that whatever is in there is beyond comprehension as we know it which is kind of exciting number three another director lent a hand in the third segment of pulp fiction the bonnie situation pulp fiction's director quentin tarantino played jimmy a neurotic friend of jewels whom vincent and jules visit after marv gets shot in the face for some of the scenes involving jimmy tarantino's fellow director and friend robert rodriguez helped with the directing and directed some of those scenes tarantino and rodriguez would go on to work on several movies together such as from dusk till dawn and the grindhouse double feature tarantino would also have cameos in some of rodriguez's movies such as desperado and planet terror and both the director's movies even seem to have a shared universe with characters being referenced and fictional brands showing up such as the red apple cigarettes as mentioned and big kahuna burgers i really like the idea that all these tarantino and rodriguez movies are part of the same universe and i guess you could say that it all started when rodriguez directed parts of pulp fiction number two the book that vincent reads while doing his business there are many wonderful little details scattered throughout pulp fiction things that you'll notice more and more each time you watch the movie such as actor steve buscemi playing buddy holly at the jack rabbit slims restaurant we also see the board game operation which is conveniently placed in a scene where the characters are about to perform an operation on mia wallace creating a great visual metaphor there are tons of things that you may have missed scattered throughout the film one of them being the book that vincent often takes to read on the toilet the book is not some random prop but a 1965 british action spy comic called modesty blaze in which the main protagonist also called modesty blaze has a mysterious background and organizes a secret crime organization called the network where she gets up to many action-packed adventures there was a 1966 movie adaptation of modesty blaze and a 1982 tv pilot and tarantino supposedly always wanted to direct a modesty blaze movie he was however the executive producer for a straight to video movie based on the strip in 2003 called my name is modesty it was no kill bill but like vince sitting on the john it's an insight into tarantino's fascinations which themselves are fascinating number one pulp fiction hit with a bang [Music] interestingly pulp fiction had screenings all around the world before it was shown in america in countries such as japan south korea and slovakia however when it did finally arrive in the states it was a massive hit bringing in nearly 214 million dollars on an 8 million budget which is insane it would go on to become the third highest grossing r rated movie of 1994 and was instantly hailed by critics as a masterpiece and many to this day think it's tarantino's greatest achievement it was also described as quote a touchstone of postmodern film and it proved that movies don't need a ginormous budget to be successful so it was definitely a win for independent filmmaking pulp fiction would also go on to be nominated for seven academy awards and one for best screenplay and duma thurman samuel l jackson and john travolta all got oscar nominations basically pulp fiction had arrived and was here to stay and it feels just as fresh now as it did back in 1994. seriously no matter how many times you watch this movie never gets old pulp fiction's popularity has in no way diminished over the passing of time if anything it's gotten stronger and without a doubt is one of the most celebrated pictures in movie history in 1994 quentin tarantino gave the world his golden opus a movie with memorable dialogue and unforgettable situations he gave us a divine film full of wisdom and memorable characters a movie that lays its vengeance upon me with sheer amazement and spectacle a movie that is pulp fiction you know it really isn't easy trying to explain pulp fiction in one swift sentence it's a movie of many parts with many things happening and as bizarre and as unconventional as it is it's still very mesmerizing and i put that down to the script and the performances it's a movie that you have to watch in order to fully understand because just like the gold glow in the briefcase it can't be explained so you have to kind of witness it for yourself so definitely go check it out anyway i'm minty and i've got to decide if i want a big kahuna burger or a royale with cheese see ya [Music] you
