[Music] doc and Marty are back for their final curtain call him back to the future part three the final installment that sees the franchise go back to the Old West after Marty is stranded in the 1950s he needs 1955 doc to help him get back to 1985 but when Marty learns that future doc gets killed by Mad Dog Tannen in 1885 he makes a detour to the Wild West of Hill Valley to get doc home safely however a fuel leak means that doc and Marty have to find an alternative way to get the DeLorean up to 88 miles per hour and to complicate matters even more doc falls in love with local schoolteacher Clara Clayton and thanks to his hot-headed nature Marty is now the target of Mad Dog Tannen the most brutal Tannen in the bith family released in 1990 and seeing Michael J Fox and Christopher Lloyd return to their iconic roles of Marty and Doc Back to the Future Part three is a pleasant finale that nicely wraps everything up [Music] if the first back to the future is the coming-of-age teen comedy and the second one is the sci-fi action movie then part three is more of a period piece drama a character study of our main hero's but that's not a bad thing as I love these characters and it's nice to get into the layers and to learn more about them so 10 things let's check it out and [Music] you mad dog panic I hate that I hate it you hear nobody calls me mad dogs specially not some dude it up egg-sucking gutter track number ten part of a to movie deal when back to the futures director Robert Zemeckis and writer producer Bob Gale went to work on a Back to the Future sequel they did so with a deal with Universal Pictures to release two sequels back-to-back although this is more common nowadays and several franchises have done this like The Matrix Pirates of the Caribbean Harry Potter and The Hunger Games back in the late 80s and early 90s this wasn't as common and was kind of revolutionary it was really groundbreaking to be getting to back to the future sequels at the same time the two movies were shot over 11 months with a three-week break in between 2 and 3 it was its Haissam production as well Back to the Future 3 was being filmed part 2 was still being edited with both movies requiring the same level of pristine care and quality with Zemeckis on location with part 3 and Gale in the studio working on the final touches of part soon Back to the Future Part so oddly ends with a trailer to part three that's because the mecca's didn't want to leave fans hanging to know what's going to happen next going by his own memories of watching The Empire Strikes Back and just needing to know what enough was going to happen in the next installment and finding the wait agonizing number nine western origins the first movie explores the 50s the second movie explores the future the third movie goes into western territories the seeds of Back to the Future Part 3 incidentally go all the way back to the first movie whilst making the original Back to the Future director Zemeckis asked Michael J Fox if he could travel in time what time period would he go sue and Fox simply replied the Old West so he can meet cowboys and that notion stuck with Zemeckis and thus would become the basis for the third movie in fact Back to the Future 2 is actually full of foreshadowing for part 3 doc mentions that he always wanted to visit the Wild West we seen the time circuits briefly gets stuck on 1885 we get a brief shot of Mad Dog Tannen on a TV screen at the Biff Casino this photo was actually from early test makeup of the character hence why he looks different to how he actually does look in part 3 and Doc wears a Hawaiian shirt with cowboys and steam trains on it and of course part 3 features both cowboys and steam trains so the future has been written it's been written on Doc's funky shirts number 8 spiritual journey back to the future part 3 feels quite different in tone compared to the first two movies it feels more like an in-depth character piece where we actually see both Marty and Doc progressed and evolved with their stories getting wrapped up in the finale with Doc learning that he can find true love other than science and Marty learning not to be such a hothead when someone calls him a name of which could lead him to making bad and even dangerous decisions an arc that was introduced in the second movie which I actually really appreciate that they gave Marty that floor otherwise the character is too perfect which isn't as interesting Zemeckis wanted part three to be more of a human story a tale of our characters going on a spiritual journey a journey of self enlightenment so to speak this was a deliberate contrast to the first movie which had themes of materialism equals success and knowing what we know now of Crispin Glover 'he's criticism of ending the first movie with marty being given financial rewards rather than love being the reward makes me wonder if sam ekiz and gail pondered upon those criticisms and thus part 3 was the antidote to the financial success equals happiness themes in the first movie yeah the stakes definitely feel higher in part Braer you get the feeling that doc and Marty are in a much more hostile world and if they don't get out soon then there will be major consequences yes I do feel that the going for Laughs approach is there but it was somewhat downplayed to make way for the character developments number 7 child persuasion when it came to writing Back to the Future Part three Zemeckis and Gale thought that they had taken the story of the McFly family as far as it could go so for part three they decided to mainly focus on Doc the irony being and I know I'm not the only one to say this part one was George McFly story part suit was Biff story and part three is doc story isn't that weird that Marty is considered the main character of the trilogy and yet he's not the main character in any of the movies well that's because marty represents us the audience who is going on these adventures and being caught up in the situation's of the destinations in which he arrives in he has to act on the environment he finds himself in rather than the environment revolving around him any way to explore the character doc it was decided to give him a love interest and thus the character Clara Clayton was created the character was written with actress Mary Steenburgen in mind however when the actress was offered the role she actually turned it down she only accepted after our kids nabbed her to take the part as they were massive Back to the Future fans number six injuries no movie is without its risks and back to the Future 3 sure did have a few scrapes along the way for example during the dance scene where Doc and Clara are ballroom dancing actress Mary Steenburgen actually taught a ligament in her foot wow that must have been some serious intense dancing but the most notorious situation revolving around Back to the Future Part three is a scene where Mad Dog attempts to hang Marty - which while filming the scene the stunt went wrong and Michael J Fox was actually left hanging with the rope choking him with him actually passing out without the film crew knowing and once they saw that there was a problem they had to revive him the terrifying ordeal was finally revealed in Michael J Fox his book lucky man I guess he is a lucky man lucky he didn't die while filming that scene number 5 Mayor Reagan we all know the infamous line in the first Back to the Future movie where 1955 doc asks Marty who is the president in 1985 where Marty explains as Ronald Reagan we're in disbelief doc responds right all right after a joke that actually really delighted the president when he saw Back to the Future however there was an attempt to follow up on that joke where there was an idea of casting Reagan as the 1885 mayor of Hill Valley and back to the future part three which actually would have been really funnier and at the time of filming Reagan would have just finished his presidency Rana however he declined the offer speaking of other famous names as we all know him Back to the Future Part three there is a subplot where in 1885 Marty gives himself the name Clint Eastwood well in order to do this the production had to get Clint Eastwood's permission which he allowed and he found the use of his name to be quite humorous number four filming location unlike the first two movies which constructed the town of Hill Valley at the universal back lot with the sets just being redecorated to represent different stages in time come back to the future part three the crew started from scratch and built the hill valley of 1885 on vacant land in Sonora California and the crew were allowed to film at the location rent free provided they leave the old western set buildings in an attempt to turn the set into a western themed theme park later down the track other locations used for filming include Monument Valley and Jamestown California which gives the scenery a dry earthly western look and feel in my opinion Back to the Future Part 3 may not be the best entry but it has the best cinematography with some of the location shots looking truly gorgeous and thanks to the calm remote country scenery a lot of people who worked on the shoot found it relaxing despite being a hectic production number three western sound as with the previous two movies composer Alan Silvestri returns to score Back to the Future three and he scored this time around sounds quite different he still uses the adventurous Back to the Future theme and other musical cues from the previous two movies but also incorporates a lot of Western sounding music that sounds influenced by older Western movies like Elmer Bernstein's féin for the Magnificent Seven making the score sound fresh and exciting but also timely he also composed some more serious music for part three to go with the more character-driven aspect of the story the big birds of ZZ Top provide a song for the movie called double back and even appear in Back to the Future Part three at the town festival a similar thing happened with the first movie in which Huey Lewis who provided the song power of love for that movie also had a cameo there wasn't any pop artists in the second one though was there well I do remember I saw a few Michael Jackson posters that and the video from the cafe 80s that was meant to be him but oh well ZZ Top also provided a music video where we see the band performing on the Back to the Future three sets as well as splicing them with scenes from the movie in my opinion this music video hasn't aged very well it has that sort of late 80s and early 90s MTV film which is fine but it's just weird seeing footage from Back to the Future Part three edited to look like a funky music video number two dark deleted scene thanks to the coming of DVD all Back to the Future fans were delighted we're seeing deleted scenes from the trilogy giving us a chance to see otherwise lost footage from one of the greatest trilogies of all time however Back to the Future 3 has a deleted scene that really put a damper on things in Back to the Future 3 mr. Strickland actor james tolkan plays an ancestor to the Strickland family with the character marshal Strickland who frequently turns up to show the audience where the Strickland family gets its obsession with discipline and order however in the infamous deleted scene Mad Dog Tannen rather cold-bloodedly kills marshal Strickland and seems really happy about it and we even see the character slowly die yeah this just does not fit in with the rest of the movie and takes the movie into really dark territories so I'm glad they caught it it just doesn't fit in there speaking of outtakes and deleted scenes there is an outtake I love where Seamus McFly comes home with supper holding a stuffed Roger Rabbit I don't know why but this just gets me and of course it makes sense as Robert Zemeckis also directed Who Framed Roger Rabbit interestingly the character Seamus who was also played by Michael J Fox was supposedly originally intended for Crispin Glover which would actually make sense as the script was probably written before that notorious Fiasco with Glover took place number one he also probably would have benefited from reshooting the end where that weird kid was pointing at his crotch of which once you see it it's just awkwarder now I don't know if this is true but several years ago on a back to the future online discussion forum someone said that it would have been this kids way of signaling that he needs a bathroom break but who knows has anyone else fought that'll be good to actually find where this kid is now and to hear his side of the story hmm number one six highest-grossing movie of 1990 part 3 was released on may 1990 and was the sixth highest-grossing movie of that year its box office earnings were lower than part zoos but it still made an impressive two hundred and forty six million dollars on a 40 million dollar budget some critics of course were of course critical feeling that the Western sets looked more like sets that were made for TV which I don't know where they got that from I honestly don't personally I've never watched Back to the Future 3 & 4 now that looks like poor TV quality if anything I think this entry actually looks the most epic and theatrical the movie was also praised though for giving the series a satisfying conclusion when Back to the Future 3 came out although everyone liked it i explicitly remember it was mine and my friends least favorite in the entry the consensus with us kids seems to have been that Back to the Future one and two were action-packed and exciting whereas in part three everything slows down and the series kind of goes out on a whimper however as many others have said it's a film that I've really come to appreciate as I've gotten older the material does seem to be more mature than the first two movies and it's all about the main characters dealing with inner turmoil and progressing and thus wrapping up their stories yes Back to the Future 3 is more character centric but oh boy what great and rich characters doc and Marty are [Music] above all it's a sweet movie and a kind movie it doesn't quite leave you on the edge of your seat like the first two movies but what it does leave you feeling is satisfied by the end of the movie you have a sense that everyone's story has now been told and wrapped up nicely so you don't in any way feel let down by the end of this movie and the sequence at the end involving the Train is still pretty damn epic anyway I'm minty and please please no sequels or reboots the Back to the Future trilogy is beautiful and perfect the way it is see ya [Music] you
